No fair not sharing the good stuff you are smoking. The results were less than spectacular. Very few wanted to be useful, some wanted to boss us around others are in a state of shock. Demanding the moon and screaming when they couldn’t have it.
Surely there won't be people like that in a real SHTF situation. I have many people try to tell me that in a TEOTWAWKI, that everyone will be so nice and polite to each other.......

ian,
Anyone who thinks the people who daily whine about "Unfair" will get better when TSHTF probably is too stupid to be allowed to reproduce.
They also are likely to have voted the "Chicago way": Democrat, early and often.

The Refugees
Chapter Three.
H.G outlined his plan “It’s time to bring back the old apprenticeship idea.” He added details “We’ll start with young families teaching them what they need to know to farm so we can increase production enough for sale and trade.” I added we would need some professional and trades people like Dentists and Plumbers.
Our next item of business is organizing salvage missions. It was decided that crews would be sent out to locate and mark for retrieval any and all items that were deemed useful. One rule I insisted on was armed soldiers to protect the crews.
We needed food canned goods, dry goods, canning supplies. fuels. Propane, fuel oil, kerosene, gasoline and so on. We worked on this until Ellie called us in for a meal. One thing I noticed was the honest folk were not short of food. H.G explained “Around these parts folks keep a large pantry because the weather can turn on you in a heart beat, The unprepared learn in one lesson that stored food is a way of life.” I thought it a lesson many people would learn in the near future.
Of the people that remained most were willing to do what ever was asked of them. There was one woman who was dead set against her sons learning to do “menial labor.” She went on about their bloodline and how they were to good to work with their hands and how important her late husband was.
Mike was in no mode for her abuse. He immediately had her placed into custody pending a hearing. Next he turned to the two boys and asked “What would you like to do?” Both of them asked to join the salvage crews.
With that problem settled we were able to get things ready for the first salvage mission. Our first target was a local food distributor and medical supply house. Travel was expected to take the better part of a day so we thought three days for the mission was not unreasonable. Most of the locals could shoot and had enough ammo to help protect the group but the main job of protection would belong to the soldiers.
While we putting things together we heard multiple helicopters overhead.

Choppers you were maybe not expecting could be a bad thing.

The Refugees.
Chapter Four.
We went outside on high alert. I had no idea what person decided that landing a helicopter in the town park was a good idea but I was wanting to find out. I know if those pilots decided to open up on us we had no chance.
A man stepped out of the helicopter that had landed and introduced himself as Colin Desweller. It seems the President sent him to observe our methods so they could be duplicate elsewhere. Mike told him he would be held while we confirmed his story.
Colin was on an “observation mission” for the President and the Joint Chiefs. He asked questions of the Refugees and the soldiers. He listened more than any “observer” I have ever met. He asked to go on the salvage mission and Mike told him “It will be dangerous so be armed.” He agreed to the terms.
Later that evening Colin gave us a briefing on the state nation. He told us “California was a complete loss along with most of the West Coast and Hawaii was an unknown at this time.” I asked about Yellowstone and was told “So far so good but we have survey teams on the ground keeping an eye on things.” As I suspected the cities were all lost. I went home and got some rest.
I woke up dog piled beneath wives and triplets. They said it was my punishment for being gone too long yesterday. We got a breakfast of eggs and bacon with toast. I filled my thermos with coffee and my replica World War Two Canteen with water. I kissed all the girls good-bye, grabbed my rifle and pack and “got for town” as Gregg Farley would say.
The salvage crew worked until noon and stopped for lunch. One of the crew men set up a kerosene cook stove and started to heat up some soup. While the soup warmed he sat out bread and peanut butter for sandwiches. We found a good deal of items on this trip. When we got back a new group of Refugees had arrived.
I looked over the group and thought NO, NO, NO this can’t be. Not these people, not now.

The Refugees.
Chapter Five.
What I saw shocked me. In this batch of Refugees were my parents and other siblings. The very people who made my life a nightmare were here now. Well this time I am not putting up with it.
Almost immediately these losers start tossing their weight around like they are people of importance. My parents threaten Mike and start bullying me. Demanding I take them in and blaming me for the asteroid strike. My idiot brothers Paul and James are currently trying to foment a rebellion. My less than useful sisters Margret and Patricia are crying about how they have suffered abuse by being made to be maids.
I tell Mike “you have my blessing to shoot the lot of them.” Mike exercises control and does not shoot them. He does order them arrested and a group of very large soldiers move in to take them into custody. You have no idea how happy this makes me.
I take sue with me to “talk sense” to them. The first words out of my father’s mouth are “You better get us out of here or Alice will beat you.” I laugh as I tell them “Alice is currently fertilizing my farm fields.” My mother chimes in with supreme stupidity “You are making her do hard labor, don’t you get it that is beneath her.” I almost have to draw a picture that she is dead.
They tell us how thy managed to track me down after all this time. It seems there remains people in Washington who are still working for the old President and I am one of the targets.
I tell Mike what Sue and I discover and he sets up a call with the Joint Chiefs and the President. When the President hears what we learn he is torqued off and that is putting it politely. He assures me that people that side with the former President and his cronies will pay and pay dearly.

The Refugees.
Chapter six.
The next morning I woke up tired. My mind and body have been in overdrive since this started. I needed a break and I know just the thing. I went out to one of the old buildings and found some old cane poles, a tackle box and a bait bucket. Next I dug up a bunch of worms. I rounded up the triplets and we walked down to the river.
I knew there were fish to caught. We waited for the fish and Janey caught the first one a nice bluegill about eight inches long. We caught enough fish for a meal and decided to call it quits as the girls needed to do evening chores. It was a good day off.
After a supper of fish, green beans and fried potatoes I began thinking about the river. I wanted to explore upstream and down stream. For that I would need a canoe preferably one with a square stern and a electric trolling motor. For that to happen I would have to make some trades.
The next morning was a salvage run and I was scheduled to join it. Hey, wait maybe I can get what I need by salvaging it. I asked my wives if there was anything they needed and they gave me a list of practical items. I was determined that they would get this and more. A lot more.
We started out at first light. The party was ready to work bright eyed and bushy tailed but that would change by the end of the day.
Our first stop was a hardware warehouse some things we took and somethings we inventoried for later. One of the refugees had two decades of hardware store experience so he was put in charge of inventorying the place.
We took a lunch break at noon and one guy had set up his version of a field kitchen. It consisted of an antique Perfection kerosene cook stove with a stove top oven, several Yeti cooler, folding tables assorted plates and cook ware.
Our meal was beef stew, corn bread and apple pie for desert. I don’t know how well or what other refugees were eating but we did not have it too badly. We worked until evening and had a meal of chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with green beans. Some people got KP. Just as we were finishing up we heard shots being fired.

The Refugees
Chapter Seven
I ordered a report and found we were under attack by a unknown group. I headed for the sounds by the time I got there it was over and seven attackers were down. Three of our men were wounded and being treated. I asked if anyone knew who them no one did.
We checked the bodies for ID and found nothing. One man noticed that their weapons were all built in china and are currently in service. Interesting I thought, I wonder if China is playing its hand.
We finished the salvage mission and headed home. Mike told me we had a meeting with the President and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I hope they can provide some answers.
The meeting started and I gave my report about how we were able to get people into meaningful work. I gave more good news that we could sell some food stuffs this fall if they could be moved. I told the President about the attack and the weapons. He said “I was afraid of that, China and North Korea have been playing Bully Boys for the traitor President and his cronies.” He authorized us to use whatever force was needed and treat attackers as enemy combatants. I think he knew that was our only option.
Mike doubled the guard and asked for more soldiers, unfortunately none were available but we could get resupplied. We were on our own for now.

The refugees.
Chapter Eight.
I thought being on your own left a lot to be desired and most folks agreed with me. I checked the inventoried the supplies and the animals. One of the cats decided to show me the rather large mouse he hunted and defeated. Gee thanks cat.
I wanted to add some wood and steel to the shop if possible. I would check around about that. I heard some familiar and unwanted noises coming from the back of the property I went to check it out. Oh joy another feral hog this one was bigger than the last one. I readied my shotgun with Hog Hammer slugs and triple aught buckshot.
I sighted on the beast and squeezed the trigger, man those slugs hit hard. The slug put porky in the dirt and once again we would have pork. I reload and head for the barn to get the tractor to pull the hog to the house. Man was he big.
Once I got him to the house we sent for the butcher. Lennart asked me if Betty had to come to my rescue again. I told him I shot this one with a twelve gauge hog hammer slug. We did the same deal as the last time half for Lennart and half for us.
Mike, H.G and Collin stopped by so I could hear Collin’s report. It seems a lot of people are trying to duplicate what we are doing with varying rates of success. He added that the President wanted him to remain with us and become part of the community.
We all agreed that Collin would be a good addition to the community and H.G asked him “you ever milked a cow young man?” We were all shocked when Collin told us “ No but I have milked my grand parents goats many times.”
We talked well into the evening and Collin told us how his parents had died when he was young and his grand parents took him in. They taught him about the things on their little hobby farm.
I told H.G that I wanted a canoe that I could put a small outboard on and he told me “I might know of a couple that are available for trade.” The trick is I have to take both.
