Chapter four
It is a strange thing for me to happily call anyone family. I have been abused by “family” and now am exploring what does it mean to have loving family. Having a place I call home is also strange. My work and studies have kept me moving. This is all new to me.
My wives all moved into my room each of us have our own bed but I see that changing soon. I was the one who got to move all of their things. They sure have a lot of heavy stuff it is all necessary if it makes them happy. The triplets are very much in need of a proper father figure and they have elected me, I hope I can live up to it.
I have gotten into the habit of checking the HAM radio. It looks like that is about to pay off. I hear This is the Government Radio Broadcasting Service, Stand by for official information from the Joint Chiefs of the Armed Forces.” Oh Oh, why are we not hearing from the President or other elected official?.
The man called himself Major Travis B. Whitley of the United States Army. This is what he told us. “California is gone destroyed by an asteroid created Tsunami. Yellowstone appears to be stable for the time being. The Jet Stream has been sinking but is now considered stable. Be prepared for extreme weather. The President, Vice President and Congress have fled the country a new President and Vice President will be established as per the Constitution. More information to follow on tomorrows broadcast.
I shared this with the other adults and kept my mouth shut about some of the thoughts I was having. My experience has left me a little skeptical of the “official information.” I asked Bob what he thought he told me “the scariest words are I am from the Government and I am here to help.” I couldn’t argue with that.
The broadcast got me thinking that our front end was way to open. We need to fortify the front yard and pit up a strong gate. The clinic was a two edged sword It could heal our wounds, gain us goods in trade or make us a target all at the same time. One group that has to be dealt with is Home Front.
Our security needs some upgrades. I went out and measured the yard and the drive. Bob and I determined we would need a double rock wall filled with dirt and maybe we could construct a metal gate of some kind. This would take a bit of doing.
About this time a Military Humvee pulled into the drive. Terrific what now?

The Event. Chapter five.
The Humvee has a maned fifty caliber up top and three people inside. The one in the passenger seat calls out “We are here to talk, may we come out?” I told them “Come all of you and leave your hands off your weapons.” They complied.
Their leader stated in a very military voice “We are looking for Doctor Rufus Pennington.” I stand up to the them “I am Doctor Pennington may I ask why you are looking for me?” The leader introduces himself as Captain Mike Bendix and tells me the new president wishes for me to look over some information and hands me a sealed burn before reading pouch.
I ask them to come inside and I will have a look. What they don’t know is my wives have them covered if they forget their manners. We go inside and I open the packet and begin looking over the information. It seems China is up to shenanigans again. I make notes on ship movements and ask “What condition is our Navy in?” The Captain tells me “We are good shape there as the Joint Chiefs had all ships out of the way of the impact.”
I need one more piece of information “Who is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs?” The answer takes me by surprise it is an old friend Marine General Gary “Hardcore” Weston. Sometimes we don’t need to shoot the messenger.
My wife Sue asks the soldiers to stay for dinner. Mike tells her “Happy to accept Mrs. Pennington, any meal that is not an MRE or otherwise government issue is a rare treat these days.” I introduce them to the others and his jaw hits the floor when he finds I have three wives. By the end of the evening Sue has pumped him information and we learn a lot.
As they preparing to leave our “friends” from Home Front show up and issue their speech about what they are to do, what they are going to take and who they are going to kill. These guys need some new lines.

The Captain told me whatever we needed to tell him and it would appear. My job was to get some form of infrastructure designed so it could be implemented. I asked Mike about the State Government and found out they had disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
I told Mike “I really want to secure this property, stuff will be getting scarce and we have a bunch of whack a doodles calling themselves Home Front causing no end of trouble.” Mike was on the radio and stuff started happening fast. Trucks showed up and soldiers got to work Soon the front was covered by a HESCO barricades.
Mike and I take a walk around the property so he could see our property line. At several points he had troops setting up observation and listening posts. By the time we got a communication truck was setting up. A supply truck dropped of a bunch medical supplies. This made Betty very happy and made for a lot of work.
Just as we were getting settled Home Front dropped by and introduced themselves.

The Event .
Chapter Seven.
Home Front made the usual speech about what they going to do to the women, what they were going steal and how they were taking over. I guess they missed all of the soldiers and the Humvee with the fifty caliber on it. Oh well no one ever accused them of being overly smart.
By some miracle one of them survived, a female she made the same rant to the letter that my sister made. I told Mike and he ordered her to be taken out back so that Sue could make “girl talk” with her. Sue came out with her “Beauty kit” and began work.
My wife can be scary when she works but the worst part is the laugh The laugh would make a certain insane super villain wet himself. She got all kinds of information from the half shaved head barf green colored hair. Unlike my sister she actually said some things worth hearing in between screams of pain.
Mike, Bob, my wives and I discussed what we had learned. It seems Home Front is more than a local branch of nit wits trying to play Mad Max. They are a subversive group that is well funded by a group out of China. Their mission is to tie up law enforcement and military during the event and hinder the recovery. We needed to kick this up the line.
While Mike handles the getting the information up the chain of command I take my shotgun and Jill out to check the woods for hog sign. We don’t see any hog sign but do notice some cut fence. I tell one of Mike’s people a First Lieutenant named Amy Suttler and get a lecture from her. “Lesser people such as you don’t need guns only the elite need guns.” It is all I can do to keep from shooting her. She just doesn’t know when to shut up. “You should be put to death for arming a child and I will see to it that it happens.”
Okay enough of this she is on my property and threatening my family and their safety. I plant the butt of my twelve gauge in her forehead hard. Mike and two soldiers come around the corner. He can see the anger on my face and asks “What happened?” I tell him what the Lieutenant said and how she threatened me. Mike ordered her disarmed and arrested.
Just as she was being taken away she dropped dead.

The Event.
Chapter Eight.
I called Betty out to take a look at the corpse. I know I hit her hard but it was not that hard something isn’t right. Betty put on gloves and rolled her over and it looked like something exploded from the inside of her neck. Betty probed a bit and removed some fragments putting them in a plastic bag.
She told us “I have an idea of what happened but need to test these fragments for residue.” She left for the clinic asking to have the body bagged and isolated for now.
Two medics handled the bagging and I got the feeling something bad was up. Well, nothing I can do about that right now but there are farm chores that need doing. I walk out back and hear a long forgotten sound. I know the sound well those are coon hounds! I don’t remember anyone running hounds during the day.
I look and see an older man chasing them telling them they best get back of else. The dogs come up near me and appear to be friendly. The man steps up and introduces himself H.G Fender and these are his disobedient hunting dogs.
H.G tells me “I put ‘em in the barn to clean their run and dog coops and some how or another they managed to get loose. I invite him up to the house for some coffee and he accepts. He leashes up the dogs and we head for the house.
On arriving he is somewhat mystified to see military vehicles and soldiers in the drive. He asks “Were you the ones doing all the shooting a bit ago?” I told him what happened and about the corpse. He said “I don’t blame ya’ none threatening a man and his family with disarmament should be a capital offense. I am beginning to like this old timer.
Betty came in and told us “Your attack didn’t kill her, there was a small explosive device planted in her neck and it was remotely triggered.” H.G asked to see the results of the test and photos of the wound. He looked upset and told us “I've seen this before.

I just made up a rule that all first time stories must be at least 417 chapters. Please continue. ;^) Small bites are better for the digestion.

“We are Home Front and we know you have food and guns we will be taking all of it.”I applaud those who have hope and aspirations but what about writing a cheque w/ your mouth that your body can't cash did these guys miss? Somethings can't be 'spoken into existence' or maybe these boys get a steady diet of wishful thinking will prevail.just visualise your success doesn't work that well if you're short on planning & tactics.Oh well .....

The Event.
Chapter Nine.
H.G told us that he and his wife were on a short term mission trip in a very dangerous part of Asia. There was a raid on the church compound by insurgents. The Government troops put a stop to the raid but the ones they captured had their necks blown open.
This sounded like a job for Joanne. She is good at gathering information. For the few days she watched the troops as they interacted with each other and performed their duties. She noticed one man stood out and not in a good way.
The man in question was a Specialist named Tyler Klein. Unlike Sue, Joanne’s interviews did not involve pain and suffering. She asked questions about the young Specialist and it yielded some interesting data.
It seems he feels others are very beneath him. He tried ordering his superiors around and was always complaining about the Officers not being fit to continue breathing let alone leading. I think we may have our man.
I asked to bring him out back to the barn so we could have a talk. Mike sent the First Sergeant Caldwell to round him up. Meanwhile a careful search was made of his gear and evidence gathered. What was found was enough to get him put in front of a firing squad.
Specialist Klein had a very foul mouth but he was very forth coming with information. He told us he was working for a group that included the U.N, some members of Homeland Security, the former President, China and a few other foreign powers.
We asked Betty if she could tell if he had a neck bomb and could she remove it. I wasn’t worried about his head exploding because we now had trigger device but Mike wanted to send up the chain for more interrogation.

The Event. Chapter Ten.
Tyler Klein was locked up in the county jail and Betty began inspecting soldiers for the explosive device. Mike was in the communication truck talking with someone higher up.
H.G and I went around back and find the triplets playing with the dogs. They asked H.G “Are these your poor puppies?” H.G told them “Yes they are.” Poor puppies where did they get that from? Oh well the dogs don’t seem to mind.
When Mike finished his call he got us all together for a briefing. He started with our prisoner “A chopper will pick him up tomorrow morning and he will be questioned, also we are getting refugees from what is left of the cities.” I thought terrific. “but they will be expected to work if they want to eat.” I have some ideas about what hard dirty work needs doing.
Mike told us “There is a plan to take out Home Front and we are tasked with destroying the local chapter.” This is good idea that is over do. Those people are nothing but trouble.
Betty joined us and reported that everyone had been checked and passed, no more neck bombs. I was going to stay on alert because you never know what’s next.
We would let the military take care of Home Front. We had one hundred refugees to plan for. H.G suggested using the old high school for housing them and they could help the older farmers with chores as well as cutting, splitting and stacking fire wood.
I asked Mike “How will we feed them?” Mike said “they will be fed at the governments expense and from their supplies.” I hope they don’t expect steak every meal.

The Refugees.
Chapter one.
He next morning Mike took enough troops to destroy Home Front. Thanks to Sue and her recon skills they had the enemy movements well documented. It was no contest. It turned out that Home Front had no fighting skills and no stomach for anything but being bullies. The operation was mercifully short.
After Mike returned we fed his troops some good Mutton BBQ with all the sides. It’s amazing how a well fed person maintains a good outlook during the apocalypse. I asked if anyone had ever had mutton BBQ before and one soldier said “If it’s not an MRE it will be good. It must have been good because the poor guy licked about licked the finish right of the plate.
After lunch Mike and I rode into town to see what progress had been made into turning the high school into a shelter. There was a advance party of Refugees setting up cots in the Gym and another cleaning up the kitchen and dinning room. Supervising this is a man who reminded me of the old pulp novel character Doc Savage. He was keeping the crews working at a reasonable pace. As we entered I heard him telling the Gym crew “Pick up the pace ladies unless you want to be sleeping on the floor tonight.”
He must have heard us enter as he greeted us “My name is Gunnery Sergeant United States Marine Corp, retired, Alan T. Irons, You must be Colonel Mike Bendix.” Both men observed military protocols and Gunny gave his report. I asked Gunny as he asked to be called
Colonel, there s a lot of salvageable materials out there that we should collect before the snow flies, stuff like canned goods medical supplies we will be short in the near future.” Mike said “I think salvage duty would be a good stating job for the Refugees.
Gunny told us “You both know as well as I do the government meals won’t last forever, what do we do after that?” I told Gunny and Mike “We need to talk to old H.G and some other people about that.”
Just as as I said that the first bus load of people arrived.

The Refugees.
Chapter Two.
These people looked like Refugees. The first order of business was to get them cleaned up. After that we got some food into them. We showed them where they would be sleeping and got a few cry baby complaints about the accommodations. Tough luck.
I came up the idea to inventory their talents and abilities. Some people had talents and abilities that were useful others either claimed to have no abilities or actually had no abilities. Now I had organize work groups.
The results were less than spectacular. Very few wanted to be useful, some wanted to boss us around others are in a state of shock. Demanding the moon and screaming when they couldn’t have it. Mike had a great solution he sent them back to the cities to fend for themselves. I hope this does not turn around to bite us.
Two of the people we got are twin Brothers Felix and Kevin Goldman. They are third generation hotel men so I put them to running the shelter. We got a classically trained Chef and had her take over cooking. One guy was an expert in off grid energy he would eventually be put to work in that but for now he was content helping where he could.
The bus left to returning those who would not work back to the city. Those who couldn’t work would be cared for, the ones who could and would work began making new lives for themselves.
Mike and I dropped by to visit with H.G and get his take on how we could feed people after the Government food ran out. We were greeted by his Wife Ellie and their faithful hunting dogs. She told the dogs to go out back and escorted us to H.G.
H.G’s shop was like something from a different time. There was a rack of fine crafted muzzle loading flint lock arms. We talked about his “hobby” for a while before getting down to business. I asked him if he had any ideas and he said “I have a few thoughts on that.”

Surely there won't be people like that in a real SHTF situation. I have many people try to tell me that in a TEOTWAWKI, that everyone will be so nice and polite to each other.......
