Have you ever paid attention to how much history is in local road and place names? And not just in the subdivisions where the roads are named for the builder's children ;-)
Driving through Atlanta the other day, I saw some of the road signs as pages in a history book:
Powers FERRY Road
ShallowFORD Road
Johnson FERRY Road
Paces MILL Road
Paces FERRY Road
Terrell MILL Road
I might be a little more attuned to these things as I have an in-law descended from the Power family. Yes, that's the correct spelling as the boat was "Power's Ferry" but the possessive got lost over time. There's a Power Family Cemetery in Fulton County, GA.
There's also history in family names. "Smith" was a metal worker: blacksmith for the black metal (iron), silversmith, goldsmith, etc. "Wright" was a maker: cartwright, wheelwright, etc. "Cooper" is a name from the work he did but most people don't associate that word with making barrels - it's a good word to research.
If an earthquake takes out the bridges, where could you cross the river? Maybe ford the river at the shallow place?
