Whether writers have the same mental "Oops!" moments as everyone else?
I was working on an outline a few days ago (new story, not ready for prime time). I was doing a more-or-less time-ordered sequence of events when someone interrupted me with a question. I lost the next event in the sequence before I got back to the outline so this was my placeholder:
(whatever I lost in my train of thought before this line?)
Although I've moved on to the next day in the outline, I still haven't remembered what that next item was or what followed it. Some days I work in a room on another floor because someone with a question that can wait isn't likely to go up the stairs.

Maybe your characters didn't want to go in that direction and removed it from your memory.

I've had times where I've lost my train of thought, which is why I now keep notes/ideas of what I want to write about in a story, along with basic characters info. Not just their names, but a quick & dirty kind of background.

Not just their names, but a quick & dirty kind of background. I was putting my ideas on 'electronic paper' when interrupted in mid-thought. I don't feel too bad about the occasional loss of thought continuity after having witnessed a 9/10 year old tearing down a school hallway to the media center - only to stop at the door with that "Why am I here?" expression ;-) Yesterday was a much better day for writing as I committed a couple thousand words to computer - but it's "first draft" stuff and spread over two stories so nothing for the readers (yet). My wife stopped by the recliner a little after midnight to tell me good night and "Don't stay up too late" although she knows I may be there for hours if my muse stays with me.
