Friends,
This is a fairly common plot device in Chinese Light Novels.
It's seven or eight years after the collapse. Your preps turned out to be inadequate, your skills were weak and you made some serious mistakes of what to do and who to trust.
Your wife, your best friend, the leader of the opposition party in your MAG…
Someone sticks a dagger right into your kidney—just like in the Rex Applegate or John Steyers' book.
As my father used to say:
"You die the death of a june bug."
Only instead of heading for the final judgement, your mind leaps back 5, 8, 12 years BEFORE the collapse—whatever works for your story.
You know in broad outline when the SHTF. You now know what is important and what isn't—and you're a highly trained and very blooded warrior.
Well, that's done. The rest of the story is yours to write.
There's a very good online story about a fellow living in a phantasy who experiences this. It's the first day of high school. The dude sharing the table with him has never met him before, but to our Main Character this man was like a brother to him and he dies several years in the hero's past/ future or whatever.
He jumps up and gives the teen a huge hug.
"Let go of me you Gaylord!"
{Is that even a word?}
Note to hero's self, show a bit of restraint and try to train your friends—and yourself—to a higher level so they don't have to die THIS TIME AROUND.
{ Note: The hero has all kinds of combat experience, a "Killing Aura", and a will and pain resistance forged in the fires of near Hell—but he still has the body of a teen who just barely got admitted to the Martial Arts School…}
Do it however you like in your story.
{Yeah there are shades of "Quantum Leap" and "Peggy Sue got Married." The survivalist slant and the fact that your hero is in his own past permanently give it some originality. HMMMmmnnn…Starting to have ideas myself…}
