Troy should have been a registered sex offender, even if he is a minor. Whoever didn't register him with Pete should be facing criminal charges. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a former CPS worker that we have met before.
If you want to search for sex offenders free, go to your state's website (usually http://www.statename.gov). Then go to the directory and find your state investigator's then there should be a link to find local offenders.

Wow! I take a day off and RTR II is halfway to page 2! I think it's great. It's good to see some old hands and a few new ones sharing their talents with us. Anyway, I finally got the next one written. Please, enjoy.
Chapter 21
(Tuesday, June 13, 9 AM, Franklin CPS office)
“May I help you?”
“I’m Michelle Hartley. I want to see Karen Paulsen and her supervisor, right now!”
“May I tell them what you wish to speak to them about?”
“Troy McCallister.”
“Oh, you were Troy’s foster mother. I’m sorry for your loss, Mrs. Hartley.”
“Don’t waste my time. I want Karen and her boss standing right here in front of me, right now!”
(Receptionist reaches under the desk and presses a button as she calls Val.) “Val, Michelle Hartley is here. She wants to talk to you and Karen.”
“We’ll be right there.”
(Sheriff’s office, Doreen, radio) “All units, all units, silent panic alarm activated at CPS office. Need unit to respond.”
“Base, Mike Pauley. Responding to silent alarm. ETA 5 minutes, Code 1.”
“Base, Gene Thompson. Responding for backup. ETA 8 minutes, Code 1.”
“D, I’m going too.”
“Copy response and backup. Sheriff en route.”
(CPS Office)
“Michelle, what’s wrong? What can we do?”
“You can start by explaining to me what you were thinking, putting a convicted rapist in my home with my four year old daughter!”
“What!?! What are you talking about? Virginia sent us Troy’s records, he had no criminal history!”
“Bullshit! His sister finally got in touch with me last night. She tells me that Troy was arrested five times for sex crimes and got out of it. She also told me he was convicted and spent six months in prison the sixth time on charges of rape and incest because he raped her! Do you really expect me to believe you didn’t know about that!?! You people put my family in danger and it’s your fault that Kit Johnston is in the hospital right now! You people got that girl raped!”
“Mrs. Hartley, I’ll show you his records. There’s nothing there.”
“What’s the...Oh shit!”
“Sheriff, I’m sorry. I thought we had a situation here.”
“I don’t start getting some real answers, you’re going to have a lot more than a situation!”
“Mrs. Hartley, calm down and tell me what’s going on here.”
“These stupid bitches put a convicted rapist in my home! They put my daughter and me in danger!”
“Sheriff, I can’t deny what she said, if it’s true, but we didn’t know. Let’s go to my office. I want to pull Troy’s file and all of us look at it.”
(...)
“See, Mrs. Hartley, there’s nothing there. Sheriff, can you do some checking on this? If Virginia sent us a dangerous child without telling us, I need to know.”
“Yeah, can you make me a copy of this file or do you need a warrant?”
“I have to have a warrant. Call a judge right now, so I can tell him to write it. I want answers just as much as Mrs. Hartley does. The information would also aid in our investigation. If they did this, somebody’s head’s going to roll!”
(Phone, on speaker)
“Judge Phillips’ office, Colleen speaking.”
“Colleen, it’s Pete Frakes. I need the judge to write a warrant for the records of Troy McCallister from CPS. I’m standing in the supervisor’s office right now and she’s here. She is being cooperative, but they need a warrant because of the nature of the records.”
“Ma’am, this is Valerie Conner, CPS supervisor. We are conducting our own investigation into the death of Troy McCallister and the rape of Kitty Johnston. I have reason to believe that the Commonwealth of Virginia mislead us about Troy’s criminal history. The Sheriff has better contacts than we do and is more likely to get the information we need. I have no choice but to demand a warrant, but I would like it in his hands by last week, please.”
“Judge is hearing a case right now, but I’ll put the warrant together and get his signature when they recess for lunch, if I can’t get it sooner. Sheriff, I’ll call you as soon as it’s ready.”
“Good enough, Colleen. Thanks much. (click) Michelle, that’s all we can do until I get that warrant. You saw the records, as far as we can tell, these people had no idea that boy was dangerous. You have every right to be ticked off, I would be decidedly unhappy if you weren’t; but unless I find that they did know, you’re angry with the wrong people. I promise you; I will be checking to see who actually knew what and when.”
“Sheriff, we really didn’t know.”
“Ms. Conner, I intend to make somebody’s life a living hell over this. I have a fifteen year old boy dead and a deputy sheriff who’s having to make his peace with the fact that he had to shoot that boy. I intend to see somebody pay, dearly. I’m going to make for sure it’s the right person.”
“Fair enough. Thank you, Sheriff. Mrs. Hartley, we really didn’t know. I am sorry and I hope you’ll consider fostering again. There’s a lot of good kids that need people just like you.”
“HA! That’s rich! Yeah, I’ll think about it! Pete, I expect to know what you find out. Don’t make me hire a lawyer.”
“Michelle, I’m conducting a criminal investigation. If you know, you’ll have to get your information from these people, or get a lawyer. Go home, before you say something to get yourself in trouble. One way or another, when we know, you’ll know.”
“Sheriff, thanks for the help. As his foster mother, I can discuss his records with you, Mrs. Hartley. Sheriff, I would like you to be here when I tell her what you find. I want both of you to be certain that I’m telling the truth and am holding nothing back. We’ll cooperate with you on this. I may have to demand more warrants if you need more information, but I’ll do everything in my power to get you what you want. I’ve got one kid dead and one who will never be the same. I want whoever did this to go to prison. If what Mrs. Hartley told us is true, Troy should have stayed in Virginia and been placed in a boys only group home for troubled youth.”
“Ms. Conner, I’ll be in touch.” (Pete leaves)
(---)
(Tuesday, June 13, Noon, Marshall homestead)
“Hey everybody! Look who’s home!”
(All) “KIT!”
“It’s good to be home. Doc Beale surprised me and let me come home today. You four come out on the porch; I need to talk to all of you, alone.”
(Back porch)
“Welcome home, Sister.”
“I owe all of you and apology. You tried to warn me about Troy. You tried to get me away from him. I should have listened. I put all of you in danger. I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”
“Nothing to forgive. Thanks to you, Skyler and I are together. You’re one of us. Next time, it might be me. Mark, Stacy, did I miss anything?”
“Nope. By choice, we’re family. We’re in it together, always.”
But, I got you hurt Stacy, and Mark; Mark, I almost got you killed. I can’t make that up to you.”
“It’s a tooth. It’s in the back where nobody can see it and Mom and Dad have already scheduled me to have an implant put in. Once it heals, I won’t be able to tell the difference and neither will anybody else. It’s really not that big a deal. Look at it this way, I’ll never have to worry about a cavity.”
“Kit, Troy tried to kill me; he gave me these injuries, not you. He had choices. He could have treated you right and none of this would have happened. He could have tried to run when we showed up. He could have given up when I told him to. Once he started the fight, I had no choice, and neither did he. You don’t owe me anything.”
“I’m never falling in love again. I never would have believed...”
“We’re not all like Troy. Kit, there are some really great guys out there. One of them will find you and change your mind, if you let them. You’re a long way from ready, but when you are, don’t miss out on a good thing just because you’re afraid. Give it some time.”
“Nobody will want me now. Troy ruined me.”
“I know you don’t believe it right now, Sister, but no he didn’t. You aren’t quite the same woman you were, but the best of you is still in there. You look like you’ve been beaten badly, but nobody can know by looking at you what he did to you. Even if they could, it wasn’t your choice. The only thing wrong with you is that you don’t know how to cope yet. Kitty, that’s just going to take time. We’ll help you get there any way we can.”
“Doesn’t feel like it. I just feel cheap and dirty. Nobody wants to be the next guy.”
“Not true. Dad married Mom. Mom had two lovers before Dad. She was even engaged to the second one. Joanna’s father was her first. Joanna wasn’t Dad’s, but he claimed her as his own and married Mom anyway. I told you that.”
“Do you want anything?”
“I want to sleep. I haven’t been able to since...The nightmares wake me up.”
“Guys, keep yourselves busy for a while. Sister, come with me and we’ll get you a nap.” (Stacy leads Kit inside and to her room.)
“Mark, what’s she doing?”
“If I had to guess, I’d say she’s going to lay down with Kit. It’s not my story, but Stacy stayed with Kit the night before the funeral. She told me Kit slept peacefully through the night. She said Kit slept with her head on Stacy’s shoulder all night long.”
“Kit told me once that she and Kat used to sleep in the same bed after their Dad died. She said they slept in separate beds when he was alive, but after they went into the system, they slept in the same bed, holding hands. She said it was the only way they felt sure they wouldn’t get separated. It sounded kinda’ weird to me, but I guess it worked for them.”
“It’s not weird at all, Sky. Sherry and I did the same thing when Mom and Dad first got divorced. We were afraid Dad would take me and Mom would keep her. I know now that wasn’t going to happen, but it made perfect sense to us then. Sherry was a lot younger then; she was only five. I was only eight, but I had that whole ‘I’m the man of the house now’ thing in my head. Stupid, huh?”
“No, I get it.”
“Anyway, I had nightmares, but Sherry would wake up screaming her head off! She wouldn’t calm down until she actually put her hands on me. She latched onto my arm one night and was holding so tight that it went to sleep. I can’t explain why, but as long as we were actually touching, she could go to sleep and sleep through the night. I still had bad dreams, but they weren’t nightmares. They’re going to be a while. What do we want to do?”
“Mark’s not up to anything where he has to move around a lot. You guys want to watch a movie, play a game or some cards, start a fire and talk?”
“Let’s go get Jordan and Noah and see if they’d like some help with the barn. Mark can park his butt in a chair and watch.”
“I don’t know; Mark think you can sit still while we work?”
“I’m having to do everything right handed because it hurts when I think of moving my left arm. I sneezed this morning and my side hurt so bad I cried; I actually cried! My back’s still sore. About the most work I’m going to do right now is feed Swifty a handful of sweet feed so he’ll know I haven’t forgot about him. While I’m at it, if you want me to go all the way up there, you’re going to have to get the gator. I can’t walk that far right now.”
“Hey Hun, why don’t we go up there, just the three of us, and you and I take care of the animals?”
“I don’t know how, do you?”
“Well, no, but I Mark does. He’ll tell us what to do and how. With everything going on, we haven’t spent much time with the boys. I think it’d be a good idea to do something nice for them.”
“I got a better idea. If you two really want to do this, why don’t you ask the boys to come up with us and show you how? That would help them and make them feel important. It would also help them learn how to teach others what they know.”
“And Professor Marshall strikes again. Sometimes I don’t know how Stacy stands to be around you.”
“It’s my roguish good looks and sparkling personality.”
“I can see that, but how does she get past the fact that you are completely full of crap?”
“One of my many endearing qualities. Go get the boys, if that’s what y’all want to do.”
“Sky, you go ask them; nothing makes guys happier than to teach something to a pretty girl. I’ll walk up and get the gator.”
“Works for me.”
(---)
“Kick your shoes off and get in bed.”
“What are you going to do?”
“The same thing, but I have to get something first. I’ll be right back up.”
(...)
“Here, take this.”
“What is it?”
“Just trust me and drink it.”
“Yuck! What was that!?! It tasted like cough syrup!”
“It was. It was NyQuil. It’ll help you relax and sleep. Now, drink this.”
“What’s in this, bourbon and sauerkraut juice?”
“No Silly, hot chamomile tea with a little honey. That’ll help you relax too and will get the skunk butt taste of the NyQuil out of your mouth. I made me a cup too.”
“This is really good. Thanks, Sister.”
“You’re welcome, if it works. Slide over. If you want to put your head on my shoulder like the other night, you have to have me on your right.”
(Marshall Homestead, 4 PM)
“Hey Love, how was your day?”
“Pretty quiet. I have two applications I want you to look at. I called their references, both come well recommended. I got the prints for the new office today too. I looked them over and I think Ben way exceeded our expectations. We need to get the new office building going. If we have to pack any more people in this office, we’re going to be sitting in each other’s laps.”
“Pull the building and electrical permits tomorrow. Call Richards and get a quote on the plumbing, with expedited installation. I’ll talk to Carter tomorrow about how soon he can have a concrete crew on site. Larry and I will start digging the foundations and utilities trenches. If either one of these applicants works out, the office will be their first jobsite.”
“No pressure or anything!”
“Hey, they can stand up or stand down; it’s up to them. Where are the kids?”
“Wellll, Stacy and Kit are in Kit’s room taking a very long nap. Her nightmares have been keeping Kit from sleeping. Far as I know, she has been asleep since about one with her head on Stacy’s shoulder. It seems to be working, so I’m not going to knock it. The other five are up in the corral. Mark’s trying to teach the others how to ride.”
He’s not up to riding a horse right now!”
“He told me he’s sitting in a camp chair while the rest of ‘em are taking turns riding Ruthie.”
“At least they’re not trying to ride Goliath or Swifty.”
“Mark said he wasn’t letting any of them get near the stallions. He said the only one he would let on Swifty is Stacy because he already knows her. He said none of them are riding Goliath until they can handle Swifty. He said that’s going to be a while.”
“So I guess we’re having a housefull tonight?”
“Yup. Sam’s bunking with Mark and Skyler’s going to bunk with Kit and Stacy.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I love having the kids here; but at this rate, we’re never going to have a nightlife again.”
“Oh, I don’t know. I think I can manage to be mostly quiet tonight, if you can.”
“We’ll risk it. What are we going to do with Kit and Mark for the rest of the week?”
“Kit’s staying with Stacy and Mark’s still hell bent he’s going with us. He said there is no way he’s going to miss his brother being awarded the MOH.”
“I guess that’s that then. Anything else?”
“Just one thing, according to Erin, you and I have a six thirty reservation for two in the courtyard at The Bistro. She said the dress code is formal.”
“And whose idea was this?”
“You don’t want to know.”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, really. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you anyway.”
“You’re serious! You didn’t do it?”
“No, and neither did Erin. All she did was make the reservation and surprise the hell out of me when she told me. Don’t you think we better stop wasting time and get ready to go?”
“What about the kids? I don’t want to leave them here alone, what with Kit’s and Mark’s injuries.”
“Erin said Larry was going to go home long enough to take a shower and change, then he was coming back. She said she’s fixing supper for the whole herd and they’re going to stay until we get back. She was going to take all the kids home with her, but I said Kit and Mark needed to sleep in their own beds tonight and that they needed their friends close.”
(5:30, Kit’s room. Stacy is gently running her fingers through Kit’s hair.)
“Kit, wake up Hun. Wake up, Sister. Kitty, open your eyes, Honey; wake up.”
“Hummmm, OW!”
“What’s wrong!?!”
“I forgot and stretched, bad idea. How long did I sleep?”
“Four and a half hours. I slept almost that long too. I’m sorry to wake you, but it smells like supper’s about ready. You need to eat something.”
“I am hungry. I haven’t been, but I am now. It feels like I slept all night and it’s tomorrow. I didn’t have any dreams or nightmares at all. Thank you, Anastasia, I feel much better.”
“Feel up to going downstairs and eating, or would you like for me to make us plates and bring it up?”
“I may need a little help with the stairs, but I want to go eat with everybody.”
“Are you hurting?”
“Not bad, I’m just really stiff.”
“I’m not surprised. You are in exactly the same position you were when you went to sleep.”
“I’m sorry I kept you from Mark all day.”
“Kit, I was only too happy to do what I did, but Mark’s the one who suggested it.”
“Really?”
“I told him I was worried about you and he suggested I get you off alone and take care of you. He said you’ve probably been having trouble sleeping.”
“How could he know that?”
“Probably because he’s been having trouble sleeping. Kit, he’s taking this hard. He’s called me every night since it happened. I offered to stay with him, but he said no. He called me three times last night. He was almost in tears the last time. Kit, he’s so worried about you. I think he would have done this for you, and I wouldn’t have cared if he did, but he thinks being too close to any man right now is too much for you.”
“Let’s go down to eat. Would you mind if I borrowed Mark for a little while after supper?”
“Of course I don’t mind! Why would you even ask that?”
“I don’t want to cause trouble between you two.”
“Never happen. I trust you and I trust Mark.”
“I trust Mark too; he needs to know that. Sam needs to know I trust him too. Will you do something for me?”
“Just tell me what you want done.”
“I want to talk to Sam alone too. Will you talk Skyler into letting me?”
“I’ll talk to her, but I don’t need to. Kit, neither of us think you are after our guys. We girls are too close to do that to each other. I know I accused you of it, but I didn’t believe it. I was just mad. I wish I’d never said it.”
“Who cares? It’s over now and we’re ok. Let’s go eat.

Positive progress. And the skunk in the background can't be ignored - someone is about to be a former employee of the Commonwealth...

Chapter 22
(A little before 6 PM, Marshall kitchen, Brian and Morgan walk in wearing Tux and formal gown. All five big kids look at each other then wolf whistle.)
“I know, right? He cleans up pretty good.”
“You don’t look half bad either. Brian, you better show my sister in law a good time tonight. Call me if you get stuck and I’ll give you some pointers.”
“She comes with instructions; I think I can handle it.”
“Mom, if y’all do any dancing, get somebody to take a picture while you’re doing it. I want one.”
“If we do, I think our server will oblige you.”
“I hope you have a great time. Love y’all.”
“We love you too, Precious, and you, Munchkin. We won’t be out too late; tomorrow’s going to be a long day of driving.”
“I wouldn’t worry about it. Todd or Sarah can drive if you don’t feel like it. Now get going! That limo isn’t going to wait forever!” (Brian and Morgan leave)
“Mom, are you ok?”
“I will be. Apparently morning sickness can’t tell time. Debbie said it’s a little more than normal, but isn’t dangerous so far. I go back to see her Monday. She’s doing an ultrasound and I’ll ask her about it again then...Excuse me!” (Erin bolts for the bathroom. Larry starts to get up.)
“I got her, Dad. Eat.” (Stacy follows)
(Restaurant, 6:30 PM)
“Brian, Morgan, you look quite the elegant couple tonight.”
“Why thank you, Bernard. It’s wonderful to see you again.”
“If you will follow me, we have hopefully prepared a very special evening for you. I believe the word used was ‘magical’ in the request.”
“Oh really!?! Bernard, I still don’t know who arranged this.”
“Well, I do; and I must say I am in awe of just how thorough they were in their request. The two of you have much to be thankful for in your loved ones. You will know soon enough. Robert, join us please?”
“With pleasure, Mr. Tonini.”
“Right this way, please.”
(Seating Brian and Morgan)
“Bernard, these flowers are beautiful! Where did you get them?”
“A delightful couple named Bert and Sue Waters delivered them, apparently at your benefactors’ request. I enjoyed a pleasant and productive lunch with them. I also found a new supplier for our flowers here at the restaurant. I found them to be refreshingly down to Earth. Are they perhaps relatives of yours?”
“They are my brother in law’s parents. I should have recognized the roses; my and my sister’s bridal bouquets were both given to us by Bert and Sue. I am still dying to know who our ‘benefactor’ actually is. I have a hard time believing it is the young man I was told it was.”
“Not benefactor, my dear Morgan, but benefactors. The requests made of me today were made by a young man and a young lady. I will give you a hint. I recognized one of their voices. If I may, the young people in your family are quite as impressive as you and Brian. I have a letter that I was instructed to give you at the end of your evening with us. I was given permission to read it if I wished. I apologize that I could not resist the temptation. Having no other option open to them, your young people e-mailed it to me. I was captured by the first few words and could not stop reading. Tonight is your night, and I would not dare to impose myself on you, but perhaps you might join me some other time? I would like to share a few things privately with you.”
“Bernard, it cannot be this weekend, my brother is being commended for actions he performed while serving in combat with the Marine Corps. After we come home, we would be glad to.”
“Wonderful. Now, I have two choices to offer you tonight. You may, of course, order from our menu; or you may enjoy a special meal the chef planned for you. He too was touched by your young people’s efforts and requested the opportunity. He also asked that you make your choice freely. He said he will not be offended if you would rather enjoy a favorite meal.”
“What do you think, Love?”
“I think if we allow Gerome a free hand, we are in for a special treat. Let’s let him surprise us.”
“Agreed. Bernard, please tell Chef to indulge himself. Who would have ever thought a simple service call would have led to all of this?”
“I confess, I did not. I expected a business dealing between professionals. I count myself fortunate to have found good friends out of that dealing.”
“As did we.”
“I have ordered the Courtyard closed tonight, so that you may enjoy your privacy.”
“You will do no such thing! That would hurt your business! Besides, part of the appeal of coming here is in the atmosphere. Please Bernard, don’t hesitate to seat other parties out here. This promises to be a very special night for us that we have desperately needed for some time. Others may need a special night as well. Please, don’t deny them for us.”
“As you wish,, but they can order from the menu!”
“Hahaha! Fair enough, and thank you.”
“You will be Robert’s only guests during your visit. Please do not hurry; he will be well taken care of. I will go inform Chef of your choice.” (Bernard leaves)
“Mr. and Mrs. Marshall, you rarely drink when you visit us, but I have a bottle of wine prepared if you would like.”
“Considering we don’t have to drive home, I think we would like that.”
“Excuse me just a moment. (Robert steps away and brings back a slightly chilled bottle of wine and two crystal wine glasses) Here we are. (Offering Brian a glass with a small amount for tasting, which Brian does.) Mr. Marshall?”
“Oh my! Absolutely! Morgan, this is...wait till you taste this!”
(Pouring Morgan a glass, then filling Brian’s glass.) Mrs. Marshall.”
“Wow! I know this is a riesling, but what a flavor! Robert, we have been coming here for a year and only once have you not been our server. We appreciate the courtesy, but could we please be on a first name basis?”
“...If you’re certain.”
“We are. We don’t stand on formality in our family or with our friends. Courtesy and respect are in actions, not titles.”
“It is your night, but may I speak with you for a moment?”
“Of course. Please, sit down.”
“Oh no, Mr. Tonini..”
“Mr. Tonini will be informed that you joined us at our request and invitation, if he takes issue with you. The server / guest relationship is one thing, but you have asked to speak with us as a friend. Our friends don’t stand when they talk to us. Please Robert, sit down and let’s talk.”
“Thank...thank you. I won’t take long, but I wanted to say that the two of you have always treated me as an equal, even a friend. I have had the privilege to serve some very important and wealthy people here, but not a one of them is like the two of you. Mr. Tonini assigned me as your server the first time you came to visit, when Gerome made a special meal for you. When you said you would come again, I asked him to let me be your server anytime you came to visit us. Gerome and I are very close to each other as well as to Mr. Tonini. Mr. Tonini happily agreed to my request. Your reputation precedes you. I know you are both important and highly respected people in the area. I know you are at least well off. Even so, you treat everyone as an equal, right down to a me and the busboys. Morgan, when you, your sister, and your daughters came to visit, I saw a family much like my own. I just wanted to tell you how glad I am to know you.”
“Robert, we’re glad to know you too. Morgan and I have made some great memories here. You helped us do that. Don’t ever underestimate your worth. Not all of them may have eyes to see it, but you make the lives of every person you serve, better. Some of your guests may have fame and fortune, but you are every bit their equal, and ours.”
(Robert stands) “Thank you. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll go see if your first course is ready.”
“Of course, and Robert, you’re welcome at our table anytime.” (Robert nods and leaves)
(Meanwhile, back at the Marshall homestead)
(Jordan and Noah are both asleep on the floor from the busy day. The big kids are watching a movie. Stacy catches Kit’s eye and nods toward Mark, then toward the kitchen)
“Mark, can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Sure.”
“Let’s step out so the guys can still hear the movie.”
“Ok. (As they walk through the kitchen, Kit pours two cups of coffee and heads to the back porch.) This sounds serious. What’s on your mind, Kit?”
“Here’s your coffee. Stacy told me today that you’re taking what happened to me hard. You shouldn’t. Mark, you and Stacy tried to warn me. I didn’t want to see it. I loved Troy, and I wanted to believe he loved me. I thought he did, at first. When we started fooling around, if I told him to stop, he would, right then. I felt safe with going a little farther each time because I knew he’d stop. Then one time, he stopped, but not right away. That should have told me things weren’t right, but I didn’t want to see it. I had gotten a little carried away and I just thought he did too. Later, he started pushing me a little farther and got a little rougher, but it felt good. I liked it, even though I knew we were taking things too far, too fast. The day he...did this to me, I finally saw it for what it was, but it was too late. Mark, he put a lot of work in trying to get me to give in, but he just ran out of patience when things didn’t go where he wanted them to go fast enough. He always had a short temper, with everything. You had no way of knowing his attitude was because he wasn’t getting... sex from me as quick as he wanted. (Kit slowly puts a trembling hand on Mark’s arm) You’re right, I’m a little afraid of all men right now, but I won’t let him scare me into pushing away the people I love. You showed up just in time. He...he said he was going to...kill me when he was done...using me. You stopped him. You got hurt bad stopping him. I’m sorry I did this to you. Mark, don’t pull away from me. I AM afraid right now, but you’ve never hurt me. I don’t want to be afraid of you. I won’t admit it in front of Sam and Sky because I don’t want to hurt their feelings, but you and Stacy are the best friends I ever had. I don’t want to lose one of the best friends I ever had because I was a fool.”
(Mark turns his hand palm up. Kit, still trembling, takes it.) “Kit, I’m not going anywhere. Anastasia’s my girl. I don’t love you the same way, but I love you just as much as I love her. When she calls you Sister, she means it with everything she’s got. She loves you just as much as she does me. She’s right; I am taking it hard. I liked Troy. He was a good friend, until he wasn’t. I wanted to kill Troy that day and tried my damndest to do it. I’m still a little mad at Stacy and Sam for stopping me, but I know they did it to keep me from having to live with killing him. Truthfully, I’m having trouble living with the fact that I didn’t kill him. I have no remorse for what I did to him. My trouble is that I couldn’t spare you from what he did to you; I didn’t get the justice for you that you deserved, and Eric has to live with killing somebody because I didn’t finish the job. You don’t owe me any apologies. I know Stacy isn’t perfect, but I can’t see that for the life of me. How can I expect you to see a man you loved any more clearly than I do her? Kitty, you and I are ok, we’re family.”
(Holding hands, sipping their coffee in silence for a while)
“You’ve stopped shaking.”
“You gave me what I needed. Mark, do you really believe there’s a guy out there who’ll want me even though I’m not a virgin?”
“Yes, I know one.”
“Who?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. You’re just going to have to find out for yourself. I meant what I said. Don’t miss out because you’re too afraid to take a chance again. I don’t know if the one I know is the right one, but the right one is out there for you. You and he will find each other. Don’t let one bastard mess it up for you.”
“Thanks Mark. Let’s go in. I’m going to go lay down so the girls will give you men some attention. Yeah, I know you four weren’t showing any affection to each other because of me. You four have to stop that. I’ll be ok.” (They go inside.)
(The Bistro, after dessert)
“You know, this is going to cost us a small fortune, but it was worth every penny.”
“I don’t know, maybe a couple hundred dollars, plus a tip?”
“Ha! That riesling was a $200 bottle of wine. I checked when you went to the restroom. I couldn’t care less if I tried; tonight’s been worth it and more. You feel up to a dance, Mrs. Marshall?”
“Can we?”
“May I get you anything?”
“Robert, would it be alright if Morgan and I had a dance?”
“There’s no band, but I can change the music to whatever you want.”
Actually, this is just perfect for what I have in mind.”
“Ballroom?”
“Yup.”
“Robert, I do have a favor to ask.”
“If I can.”
“Would you take my phone and get a picture or two of us while we’re dancing? Our daughter specifically asked for one.”
“Gladly. Show me how to do that with your phone.” (Morgan shows him and then they take the dance floor.)
(Dancing) “Brian, it just clicked with me. Bernard said a man and a woman; Mark and Kit did this.”
“No! You think?”
“Would you rather believe Erin? She said Noah did it.”
“Yeah, sure he did. I guess we’ll find out soon.”
(As their first dance ends, Mr. Tonini escorts a very beautiful woman of about his age onto the floor. They join Brian and Morgan for a second dance. He and the woman leave the floor with Brian and Morgan at the end.)
“You two dance very well.”
“We’ve had years of practice. May I present my wife, Francesca. She has brightened my days for 24 years. Francesca, this is Brian Marshall and his wife, Morgan.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Tonini.”
“The pleasure is mine, and call me Francesca. Bernard speaks of you often.”
“Mr. Tonini, I’ve never seen you dance at work before.”
“And I have never before seen you sit down at the table with our guests. I think perhaps it is a night of good firsts for both of us, wouldn’t you say?”
“Yes Sir. Thank you for understanding.”
“Robert, you are a consummate professional and I am very proud of you. I am quite certain you were invited. Your conduct was proper. Why don’t you bring two cups of coffee for our guests. As I remember, they sometimes enjoy a cigar together after supper and I suspect they will be taking some time to read and discuss their letter. As promised, here it is. Francesca and I will leave you in peace.”
(Robert brings two coffees and a jar of honey, he remembers Morgan’s preference for honey, then leaves them to their letter.)
(Reading aloud)
Dear Mom and Dad, Mark and I wanted to do something special for you. We talked yesterday when he called me at the hospital while Aunt Erin was there. We’ve actually talked a lot about you since he and I met. You have done so much for both of us. We know that we’re a family, but still, you’ve been so good to us both. I mentioned that I wanted to do something for you as a thank you, and we started talking about it. He said you two used to go there regular and I remembered you told Aunt Erin the same thing on our girls’ night out. We both thought a romantic supper sounded like a good idea, so we made some phone calls and arranged it. We hope you had a good time tonight. If we missed anything, we’re sorry. We both love you and wanted you to know that you make our lives so much better. The two of you have changed our lives in so many ways. Mom, Dad, you’ve stood by us through everything that’s happened. You gave him up for two years, just so he could see and do things he could have never seen or done here. You gave my sister a place with your family. You kept Mark out of the system and got me out of the same system. When both our lives were turned upside down, you gave us new ones. We love you and just wanted you to have a little time to be pampered and happy without having to worry about anything. We hope it worked. Come home safely to us when you are ready. We love you.
Love, Kitty Elaine Marshall Mark Marshall
“Brian, can we go home so maybe we can thank them before they go to bed?”
“I’ll have Robert bring us the check.”
“What may I bring you?”
“Just the check Robert, and thank you for all you did for us this evening.”
“You’re welcome, but I cannot bring you a check.”
“Oh yes you can. We can’t allow Mr. Tonini to that again.”
“Mr. Tonini didn’t. The people who wrote that letter, also paid for your meal. They paid for everything and gave me a very nice gratuity. I’m sorry, but I can’t bring you the check. There is no check to bring.”
“Will you at least let us cover the limo driver’s meal?”
“No, Mr. Tonini did that himself. It is his standing policy to feed bus and limousine drivers when they bring guests. He serves them himself so his servers can concentrate on paying guests.”
“In that case, we best be going. Thank you for spoiling us. Please thank Bernard for his hospitality and Gerome for our fine meal.”
“You’re welcome and I will. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”

It's not a tornado of trouble, but it's at least a stiff breeze. And there's more learning and teaching going on, too. I really love these kids. Almost forgot, not this chapter but the next, one of these kids is going to have their world rocked. Please, enjoy.
Chapter 23
(Marshall homestead, 11 PM)
“Erin, you don’t look well at all. The morning sickness getting worse?”
“My morning sickness has decided to become morning, noon, and night sickness. Debbie’s keeping an eye on it and said it should pass in a few weeks. I’ll be alright. How was your date?”
“Somewhere between ‘magical’ and ‘this can’t be real’. I’ve felt like a fairy princess all night. All the stress, all the troubles, everything, just melted away. Cuddles, you didn’t even make the reservation, did you?”
“No, but that little white lie didn’t hurt anybody. The kids were having fun, playing a guessing game with you. Kit especially needed to do this. I think it helped her heal a little bit.”
“What do we owe you?”
“For what?”
“Dinner, the limo, the $200 bottle of wine! Erin, you spent a fortune on us!”
“No, I didn’t. I don’t know who paid for it all, or even what it all cost, but it wasn’t me or Larry. You do what you want to, but why don’t you take your little sister’s advice for once and just leave it alone?”
“Nobody’s going to tell us, are they?”
“I doubt it. The kids are all in bed; don’t you think that’s where you two belong too?”
“I’m a little worried about you. Are you sure you’re going to be ok?”
“I think so, besides, Larry’s hovering over me like a mother hen. If I so much as blink, he’s all fired up to take me to the hospital. He’ll take care of me. You know, you have a house full of kids right now and our house is empty. Would you like for us to just stay here tonight with the kids and y’all can go stay at our place so you can have some privacy?”
“No, I want Larry to take you home and put you in bed. Cuddles, you look miserable. Knowing all of our kids, if any of them need anything, the rest will be right there to take care of it anyway. It’ll be fine. Go home and try to feel better. By the way, do you have any peppermints?”
“Tried it already; they don’t help, but at least they don’t seem to make me vomit. I guess the calories are something, so I keep sucking on them. Hard candy seems to be the one thing I can reliably tolerate, so I’ve been going through the peppermints, butterscotch, and Jolly Ranchers like there’s no tomorrow. I need to buy stock in Canada Dry too. Ginger Ale is about all I can drink. Sometimes it makes me throw up too, but everything else I’ve tried to drink wants back out every time. Even the vitamins make me sick to my stomach. I’m hoping Debbie can think of something that will help this when I go see her Monday.”
“Do we need to stay home?”
“You most certainly do not! Brian, Todd’s being awarded the Medal of Honor! That’s a once in a lifetime event for him! You were Army; you know what that means even better than I do! I wish we could all go, but somebody’s got to stay here and hold down the fort. I’ve got Larry and the kids here, Kit too, for that matter. Erika will cover the office if I get that bad. I’m not hurtin’ for help here. You, Morgan, and Mark belong with Todd for this. You WILL go! Now get to bed and finish the celebration that your brother and daughter got started for you. I’m going to have Larry take me home. A warm Epsom salts bath seems to help, so I’m going to soak for a little while and then have Larry tuck me in bed. Tomorrow, I’ll feel better. To bed with the both of ya’! Larry, take me home.” (Larry and Erin go home.)
“Love, we have to find out who paid for tonight. I have a feeling it was the kids. All Kit has is her allowance and whatever’s left out of her dance money you gave her. I know Mark’s got some money in his bank account, but it isn’t right for them to be spending it on us.”
“Brian, I think Erin’s right about this. I think we should leave it alone. I think the kids did pay for it, but I also think it would hurt their feelings for us to try to give it back to them. You read their letter. Both of them, but Kit especially, felt a real need to do something for us. Mom and Dad worked hard to teach you and your brothers to be generous and kind to others. Bert and Sue did the same for Larry. We talked about this when we found out I was pregnant with Mason. We agreed to carry on that family tradition. You’re not quite correct about their money situation either. You’ve been giving them a small allowance. As an owner in the farm, I have been paying all the kids for all the farm related work they have been doing. It isn’t a lot, just minimum wage and just for the time worked, but it’s added up. I took Kit to the credit union not long after she came to us and we set her up with checking and savings accounts. Erin set up accounts for their kids. I’ve been direct depositing their wages to their accounts ever since.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Honestly, it never occurred to me. It’s always been your position, and mine, that if anybody does work on the farm or in the company; they get paid. I wasn’t trying to keep anything from you; I just never thought to say anything. Are you mad?”
“Only that I didn’t think of it. We never got paid for our farm chores, but things were different then. We sold a few head of cattle now and then and sold at the farmer's’ market when we had extra; but Mom and Dad didn’t run the farm as a full fledged business. They were building toward self sufficiency and if they managed to make a few dollars here and there, so much the better. We’re working toward as close to totally self sufficient as possible too, but we’re using the farm to generate the revenue to help do it. Mom managed things so that they could live comfortably on Dad’s Army pension and her seamstress work and other various little enterprises. As long as the farm managed to more or less break even, they were happy. No, I’m glad you did it. They have an incentive to learn skills that they can use to provide for themselves and are learning how to manage money. You’re right, they made a choice about how to spend their money and we would be wrong to interfere with it. I do think we should ask them if they covered tonight, so we can thank and praise them specifically for what they did. They deserve to have full and proper thanks and it’ll help bring it home to them that it’s a good thing to do a good thing. Speaking of which, did I mention tonight how glad I am you had a moment of insanity and married me?”
“The voices in my head say thank you, and one wants to know why we are still dressed and not in bed; she’s wanting to misbehave a little.”
“Then let’s head that way so she can misbehave, a lot!”
(Morgan giggling) “Race you!”
(Waters homestead, Master bath, Erin soaking in a bath, looking miserable.)
“Love, you didn’t manage to keep any of your supper down. Is there anything you think you might be able to tolerate?”
“Maybe a glass of ginger ale and a tube of saltines. Before you do that, set the trash can over here so I can reach it please, just in case?…Thanks, Love. You know, you keep asking me if I ever get enough? Right now, I think so. I’m sorry I’ve been so needy and that this has killed our love life.”
“You married me in a hospital bed; let’s not talk about being needy. As far as our love life, this won’t last forever. As much as we both enjoy it, making love is only a ridiculously small part of what we have built our marriage on. I’ll admit that I miss it, and you do too or you wouldn’t have mentioned it. Even so, I’m not upset about it and I’m sure your Chipmunk days are far from over, although you might beat me with a skillet if I ever get you pregnant again.”
“I doubt that.”
“I’ll go get your drink and crackers. Anything else you think you might want?”
“Maybe a fistful of that hard candy I have in the bowl on the counter?”
“Any particular kind?”
“Yeah, whatever assorted mix you grab, just make sure there are some peppermints. I keep hoping they will up and work as advertised”
“Be right back.”
“Dim the lights on your way out?”
“Sure, how’s that?”
“Just right. I love you.”
“That’s what makes it so easy to take care of you. I’ll be back.”
(Wednesday, June 14, Marshall homestead, 5 AM)
“Safe travels, guys. Todd, we can’t go, but know that we’re proud of you. Sarah, try to keep him out of trouble. Don’t let those Marines up there drag him back into all that wild partying and skirt chasing.”
“Skirt chasing? Hmm, maybe that would distract him long enough for me to recover and get some rest! Don’t worry, I’ll keep him mostly on the straight and narrow.”
“Oh, whatever! Y’all just be safe and have a good time. We’ll see you Sunday.”
“Larry, I know you can handle things, but call us if you need us. I expect we’ll get there somewhere between 3:30 and 5:00. We’ll call and check in every so often. Thanks for watching over Kit for us while we’re gone. We’ll see you later.”
(Hugging both, hard) “Mom, Dad, please be careful and come back safe to me.”
“We will, Precious. We’ll call you every day while we’re gone.” (Hugs all around, and a kiss for Mark from Stacy, and then they leave.)
“Erin, why don’t you go lay down for a little while. I’ll fix breakfast for me and the kids. I’ll come wake you up in time for work if you want.”
“I think I’ll take you up on that. Thanks, Love.” (Erin goes into Brain and Morgan’s room to lay down.)
“Dad, Mom doesn’t look good. Is she going to be ok?”
“She didn’t sleep last night much. She was sick off and on all night. She’ll be ok. This’ll ease off for her in a few weeks.”
“Is it normal to be sick when you’re pregnant?”
“Most women have some morning sickness when they’re pregnant, but usually it isn’t this bad. Mom’s doctor will figure this out and Mom’ll get to feeling better. Don’t you worry, Sweetheart.”
“Y’all worry about us; why wouldn’t I worry about y’all? You’re my Mom and Dad. If she didn’t sleep much last night, I don’t expect you did either. Why don’t you go lay down with Mom and I’ll cook breakfast.”
“You don’t have to do that!”
“I don’t have to, but I want to. Please, Dad? Let me do something nice for you.”
“If you’re sure. I didn’t mean for you to cook.”
“Lean down here, Dad. (Stacy hugs Larry’s neck and kisses him on the cheek) I like doing things for my family; it makes me happy. Is an hour ok, or will that run you too close on time?”
“I’m digging for the new office today, so I’m already at work. Six thirty is fine. Thanks, Sweetheart.” (Larry goes and lays down with Erin.)
“Want some help, Sister?”
“That’d be great! Kit, what’s wrong, Honey?”
“I don’t know. I’m just worried about Mom and Dad. I guess I’m afraid something will happen and I’ll never see them again. I guess I’m afraid something’s going to happen and I’ll get thrown back into the foster system.”
“Oh no you won’t! I asked Mom and Dad what would happen to me and the boys if they died a couple of weeks ago. They’ve got it all worked out with Aunt Morgan and Uncle Brian. If anything ever happens to Mom and Dad, Brian and Morgan are going to adopt us. If anything happens to them, Mom and Dad or Uncle Todd are going to adopt you and take custody of Mark. Kitty, we’re all safe now, you’re just waiting till Judge Phillips makes it official. Sarah and Val even have the paperwork to make that happen and Dad said it’s in their will and Brian and Morgan’s too. We’re home for good. Oh, come here, Sister; don’t cry.”
“I guess Kat...Kat really is wat...watching out for me.”
“She’s our sister, of course she’s watching out for you, for both of us. Come on now, pull it together and let’s fix breakfast. I’m glad you offered to help. I’m too short to reach everything and I don’t know this kitchen as well. Kit? Kit!”
“You just said Kat is our sister.”
“Well yeah? I can’t very well be your sister and not her’s too. When Kat was alive, I loved her just as much as I loved you. She’s not here anymore, but I still love her as much as I love you. I love you so much that I wanted you for my sister. Don’t you think I love her enough that I want her to be my sister too, even if we can’t be together right now?”
“I guess I never really thought about it. I guess we better start on breakfast. What do you need me to do?”
“You can cook. What do you want to do?”
“I do really good on a few things. I want to help you and try to learn something. What were you planning to make?”
“Omelets, bacon, sausage, an assortment of pancakes, and some sliced fruit. I’m going to make some toast and a bowl of plain oatmeal for Mom. We’ll put some crackers out for her too, just in case she doesn’t think she can eat anything else.”
“What do you need to do all that?”
“Can you get me four mixing bowls down, and the bacon, sausage, eggs, and fruit out of the fridge? Oh yeah, I need milk, one or two onions, shredded colby or cheddar cheese, and a few bell peppers if you have them. It doesn’t matter what color they are. I’ll get the dry ingredients out of the pantry.”
“We don’t have any pancake mix, I don’t think.”
“I don’t use that crap! I’m cooking for my family, they get fresh from scratch!”
“You’re going to make pancakes batter from scratch!?!”
“Yes ma’am!”
“This I gotta’ see.”
“See? You’re gonna’ do! Now get busy, we have a lot to do and no time!”
(Stacy, using Erin’s phone)
“What’s up, Erin?”
“Erika, it’s Stacy. I was just calling to tell you that if you want, you can get here by about 6:30 and we’ll have breakfast ready. Sure would like for you to join us.”
“I’ll just grab a bowl of cereal before I leave. I don’t want to put Morgan out.”
“Aunt Morgan’s already headed for DC. Kit and I are cooking breakfast this morning.”
“Oh really? What’s on the menu?”
“Omelets, bacon, sausage, some sliced fruit, and strawberry, blueberry, banana, and chocolate chip pancakes. We’re fixing plain toast and plain oatmeal for Mom if you want some of that too.”
“Be there in twenty minutes!”
“Won’t be ready yet.”
“Good! I wanna’ watch this!”
“Well then, come ahead! I gotta’ go or we won’t get everything ready. See ya’ when you get here. Bye.” (Click)
(6:25)
“Erika, would you mind going upstairs and waking Skyler up? The stairs are kinda’ hard on Kit yet.”
“Surely.”
“Kit, why don’t you set the table while I get Sam and Mom and Dad up?”
“I’m on it!”
(... knock) “Sam? (knock) Sam? Wake up, breakfast!”
“Thanks Stacy, I’m up.”
“Can you get the boys up too?”
“Will do it.”
(knock) “Dad?”
“Come on in, Sweetheart.”
“Dad, breakfast is ready. Mom, we made you some toast and plain oatmeal if you feel like trying to eat. If you don’t, don’t worry about it.”
“”Who’s ‘we’?”
“Kit and I made breakfast. Dad said you didn’t sleep good last night and I figured he didn’t either, so I offered and Kit wanted to help me. Really, if you don’t feel like eating, it won’t hurt our feelings.”
“No, I need to try to eat something. I haven’t tried plain oatmeal, maybe it’ll work. Whoa!”
“Mom, what’s wrong!?!”
“I just got really dizzy when I stood up. Oh, I don’t feel good at all. Larry, maybe I need to go to the hospital.”
“Put your arm around my neck.” (Larry scoops Erin up in his arms.)
“I’ll get your truck doors open, Dad! (Stacy races into the kitchen, grabbing Erin’s truck keys as she goes.) Kit, hold the back door open for Dad! He’s takin’ Mom to the hospital!” (Stacy’s out the back door and out of earshot.)
“She gonna’ be ok?”
“Yeah, Hun. They’ll take care of her.”
(At the truck) “In you go. Seatbelt. Thanks, Sweetheart. I’ll call you when we get her checked in.”
“Take care of her, Dad!”
“I will. Love you!”
“Stacy, what’s going on?”
“Mom got really dizzy when she got up out of bed and said she felt really bad. She told Dad to take her to the hospital. That’s all I know. Erika, we need to keep cool with the boys until we know something. We need to get back in so I can tell Kit.”
“Let’s go. You sure are calm about this.”
“Mark’s rubbing off on me. I’m scared to death, but Dad’s got her; the only person better would be God. I guess He’s got both of ‘em. Gettin’ freaked out won’t help Mom and would just upset the boys. They don’t need that.”
‘I’m so thanking God that Skyler has you guys for friends. She picked good.”
“Thanks. Kit! Don’t act all wigged out about Mom. We gotta’ keep it together for the boys. Dad’s got Mom; she’s gonna’ be fine. If they ask questions, I’ll talk to them.”
“Damn, but you’re calm under pressure!”
“Been with Mark too long. Where do you think I learned it?”
“Good point. Breakfast is on the table.”
“Thanks. Good morning, guys!”
“Sissy, where’s Mom and Dad?”
“Mom isn’t feeling good this morning. You know how she’s been gettin’ sick?”
“Uh huh.”
“Well, she was sick like that last night and she got sick again this morning. She had Dad take her to the doctor so she can get to feeling better.”
“Mom gonna’ be ok, Stace?”
“I think so. It’s probably just the morning sickness. She and Dad weren’t freaking out and Dad said he’d call us when they found out something. Let’s sit down and eat some breakfast. Hey, Sky. Come on and get some breakfast.”
“Looks and smells great! Who cooked it?”
“Kit did. I just showed her how to do a few things.”
“That’s it! Next time, you’re teaching me!”
“Deal. You want to say prayers, Noah?”
“God? Take care of Mom. Make her better so she can come home. Help us be good. Thanks for breakfast, it sure smells good! Amen.”
(All) “AMEN!”
“Mornin’ Mom. Did you and Jack have a good time last night?”
“We sure did. Felt a little funny though, having supper at home without you there.”
“You didn’t need a chaperone. Did you kiss him?”
“That’s a little personal!”
“Well, did you?”
“Ok, ok, I kissed him.”
“More than once?”
“Skyler!”
“Good thing I wasn’t there then. About time you got some lovin’. You were long overdue.”
“Skyler Renee!”
“You forgot Jackson.”
“No I didn’t. I want to talk to you sometime today. Think you can spare me some time around lunch or after I get off work?”
“Of course you can marry Jack.”
“Well thank you, but that wasn’t what I want to talk to you about. He would have to ask me first. We’ve only been on four dates.”
“And? You were so goofy after the first one, I thought I was going to have to drive us home. Anyway, I’ll see you at lunch. Hey Kit, this is great!”
“Yeah it is! You made chocolate chip pancakes for us and they’re as good as Stace’s!
“Well they better be! She’s the one who taught me how to make them!”

Brian, Morgan, Todd, Sarah, and Mark are on an eleven hour road trip to Washington, D.C.; Erin's on the way to the hospital, and all you can think about are pancakes? BTW, what did your students ever say about the frog thing?

Well *of course* pancakes come up first! My wife even asked me to fix pancakes for supper one night last week. I only had the box mix (Publix basic) but that's one brand that turns out decent (althoug not as good as scratch). If you want a breakfast sugar high, go to O'Charley's Sunday Brunch and get the bananas Foster french toastv- with bacon to cut the sugar ;-)
Perhaps good for all but one, but that one could be in deep trouble - or allergic to peppermint?

Ok... this might just be me as a funny foreigner from across the pond but.... what is the point in pancake mix? The only tricky bit with pancakes is getting the consistency of the batter right and making sure the frying pan is hot enough. Top tip... pour loads of oil into the pan then empty it out into a metal cup between frying individual pancakes.

garethn the mix allows the ingredients to begin to spoil and keeps the pancakes from being addictive.

pancake mixes (and other mixes) are convenience items, no need to keep yeast, baking soda, baking powder, or self rising or plain flour or buckwheat flour, etc. - it's a no think breakfast showing that the person is putting care into it instead of just a box of frozen premade pancakes or waffles (marketing and commercialism) they are going to the trouble of "making breakfast by mixing up the batter from the mix - the idea that even a busy family can make "homemade"

My problem in this case, is not with culinary shortcuts.... I have been known to take a few myself. It's the fact that pancake mix is solving a problem that doesn't exist. The batter is just flour, eggs and milk (with salt, cinnamon and, in extremis, a dash of fizzy water, if you're being sophisticated). The tricky bit is the frying!
