Have Baxter pull a gun on Childers and they shoot each other with mom caught in the cross fire.
Personally, I would rather let them flee by boat, capsize, and get eaten by sharks. Or flee to Brazil and fall in a river with electric eels. But if they do either of those, they will take most of their money with them and it will be lost to the ones it will do the most good.

I can't speak for anyone else. I don't find the story even close to boring put in as much dialogue as you wish. After all the story needs to please you first.

Not just the girls, what about some of the people he cheated.
BUT, it's your story and I'm just along for the ride (and the hanging off of cliffs).

Now ya'all get moar stories going.... <cracks whip> haha! Seriously, kaijafon, I really appreciate the way this place is run. There're boards that would've had a fit 'cause I posted those links to another place. I'd've heard whinin' 'n' moanin' about tryin' to steal members (hell, I ain't even involved over there) or pickin' favorites. I just appreciate what folks have been good enough to share with us. And more folks should have a chance to read the good stuff done by Patience/machinist. I'm sorry we lost him so early but I'm feel blessed that I got to read as much of his work as I did. I need to go exploring to see in I've missed any of his stuff.

And finally, after far too long, the next installment.
(Chapter 11)
“ERIN! Are you ok?”
(Erin, holding on to Larry for dear life)
“NO! He tried to take me back to my parents! He shot Brian! Brian almost killed him! I stopped him, but Brian was actually going to kill him! Brian got hurt protecting me! Oh Larry! Oh Love, I don’t know what to do! Y’all are in danger as long as I’m here! I’ve got...I’ve got…”
(Takes Erin’s face in his hands and looks into her eyes)
“I’m never letting you go. We’re in this together.”
“But Larry…”
“But nothing. I’m not losing you. Brian and Morgan are not losing you. If they wanna’ pick a fight, we’ll give ‘em one...together, the four of us.”
“But”
"I... SAID...NO...BUTS! Last weekend I gave you my heart, the rest of my life. Today, Brian risked his life for you. Running away would be a hell of a piss poor way to repay us. You say you love me? Then stay by my side. I’ll die for you. I’ll kill for you. I’ll give everything to protect you, and so will Brian, and so will Morgan. You could look for the rest of your life and never find what you have here again. I’m not going to let you waste it by running away.”
“Damn you Larry! Why couldn’t you be like Mike!?! Why can’t you just cut me loose and save your own ass!?!”
“Because I’m not Mike. Because I know who and what really matters to me. Because I love you Erin.”
“Excuse me folks.”
“Not now, Eric!”
“Easy Larry. I’m sorry I interrupted, but the sheriff called. The doctor is with Brian in the ER. His gunshot wound is superficial, but there’s a problem. Brian started coughing up blood. They are taking him into surgery now. You two better get to the hospital; Morgan needs you.”
“Thanks Eric. I’m sorry I snapped at you.”
“It’s ok buddy. If I had a woman like her, I’d be protective too. If it bothers you that bad, get me a decent cigar, later. Right now, get your butts to the hospital.”
“We can leave?”
“Sheriff said for you to get to the hospital RFN.”
“We’re gone. Fair warning, I’m gonna’ be flat out drivin’.”
“Fine! Go!”
(12 minutes and 18 miles later)
“Susan, where’s Morgan!?!”
“She’s in surgery waiting, Larry. Out this door , turn left, second door on the left. Hurry!”
“MORGAN! What happened!?!”
“B...Brian’s r...r..ribs got...got b...bro...broken a...again. Pun...puncture...d his...l...lung...A...Aaron is h...here...He’s work...working on B...Brian n...now. I did...didn’t g...get to t...talk to h...him be...before he w...went into sur...surgery. I don’t...don’t kn...know how b...b...bad it is. We can’t...can’t lose h...him, Erin! We need him! I k...know w...why I’m getting s...sick all the t...time. I t...took a pr...preg...pregnancy test this...m...morn...morning. B...Brian’s g...going to b.b.be a D...Daddy! I...I didn’t e...even get to t...tell him! He doesn’t know...He doesn’t...doesn’t…”(Morgan completely loses control)
(Erin motions for Larry to take Pete outside)
“Pete, let’s step out. I need to talk to you.”
(In the hall)
“Pete, what happened?”
“You’re not family so I’m not supposed to tell you any of this, but here’s what I know. Paramedic said Brian started complaining of pain in his back during the ride to the hospital. We knew his ribs had been broken recently so they just put it down to him getting hit in the area during the fight. Then he started coughing up blood. They radioed ahead and rushed him here. They rushed him into X-ray and then right into triage. They said the same ribs had been broken again and that his left lung had been punctured and was partially collapsed. They also said that there looks like there’s more damage but couldn’t tell for sure from the x-rays and that the fastest way to find out was to get him straight into surgery because they were going to have to open him up to fix the lung anyway. That’s all we know right now. He’s been on the table for about 15 minutes.”
“Pete, do you have that sumbitch in jail that did this to him?”
“Larry, don’t go thinking you’re gonna go and get revenge.”
“I’m not Pete...Not yet. I meant you better get over to the jail right now. Brian’s got enough people in this town that care about him that if this gets out, the guy might not live to see trial. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if it went down that way, but I don’t want you having to arrest some decent person for murder.”
“I hadn’t thought of that. You might be right, but Morgan…”
“I’ve got the girls. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll take care of them.”
“Ok. I’m gone. Here’s my card, my cell number is on the back. When y’all find out something, call me on that number. Do not call the office, call me on...my...cell.”
“Pete, as soon as we know, you’ll know.”
“Thanks Larry. Brian’s Dad and I grew up together. We served together. He saved my life in Desert Storm. I held Brian the day he was born. Those two women mean more to him than life itself. Whatever they need…”
“Pete, those women mean more to ME than life itself. Erin’s my girl. Brian and Morgan made that possible. Whatever they need…”
(Pete leaves, Larry goes back in with Morgan and Erin)
(Three hours later, Dr. Aaron Micheals)
“Morgan, Erin? Brian’s in recovery. He made it through the surgery but he’s not out of danger yet. When his ribs were broken again, one punctured his left lung and another punctured his left kidney. We were able to repair the damage to both organs and the ribs, but we had to use screws in the ribs this time. We cleaned and stitched his leg. Brian was bleeding internally and lost a lot of blood. He is in stable, but critical, condition. He will be in ICU when he leaves recovery. I don’t know how long he will have to stay in ICU or when he will be able to leave the hospital. I would like to tell you he will recover quickly, but I just don’t know. The damage was extensive. I think he will make a full recovery eventually, but it’s going to take time, probably months. Morgan, I’m sorry. We have done everything medically possible for Brian. It’s in his and God’s hands now.”
“It was always in God’s hands, Aaron. I’m just grateful God chose to use your hands to take care of him. Of all the doctors who could have worked to save Brian, you are the one who would give the most. When they told me you were coming in to do the surgery, I knew that Brian had the best chance he could possibly have. Aaron, through Tabitha, you are family to us. Brian doesn’t choose his family lightly. In the 3 years I have known him, I have learned to trust his judgement of people without question. I knew you wouldn’t give up. I knew you wouldn’t fail to bring him through surgery. Any debt you mistakenly think you owe Brian, is paid. (Morgan takes Aaron into a hug) Thank you, my friend, for giving my husband back to me and our child back his Father.”
“You’re pregnant? Does Brian know?”
“I only found out this morning. I was going to tell him at supper tonight, but MY father took that happy moment away from us.”
“Morgan, that’s the first thing you tell him. Before ‘hello’, before ‘I love you’, before anything else, you tell him that. Anything that gives him more reason to fight this is the most important thing you can tell him. I have personally known Brian for 2 ½ weeks. After seeing him with Tabitha the other night, I know what children mean to him. I know what kind of man he is and what kind of Dad he’ll be. I know he’ll be a great Dad. Morgan, what happened? How did Brian get hurt so badly?”
“Aaron, I can’t, not right now. I’m sorry, but please don’t ask me to relive today right now.”
“Doctor, step out with me for a minute please.”
(In the hall)
“Dr…”
“Micheals, but call me Aaron.”
“Aaron, I’m Larry Waters. I’m Erin’s boyfriend. I don’t know everything, but I do know the girls can’t talk about this right now. This conversation is just between us and never happened if anybody asks. What do you know?”
“Obviously, I know Brian sustained life threatening blunt force injuries to his ribs, lung, and kidney. I know a gunshot wound when I see one. What I don’t know is how I came to need to repair his lung, kidney, and ribs or how I came to need to sew up a superficial gunshot wound to his left leg.”
“Ok, here’s what I know. A man came to their place today and got into it with Brian. That fight is how Brian was hurt. I know who he is and why he was there, but the Sheriff told the family not to talk about it for legal reasons. Aaron, I’m sorry I can’t tell you more. I’m really not trying to be difficult.”
“I know you’re not. The Sheriff left word for me to completely document Brian’s injuries and my professional opinion of how they occurred. Considering what Brian did for my family, I’ll do everything I can to help them. I need to let Morgan know I’m going to check on Brian and then I need to do just that.”
“Ok, will you let us know how he’s doing?”
“I want to stay with him for a while to monitor him, but I’ll send a nurse or Dr. Beale. She assisted me in the surgery.”
“Thanks Aaron.”
(Back inside)
Morgan, I’m going to go check on Brian and monitor him for a while. I will send someone to let you know how he’s doing now as soon as I know.”
“Thanks Aaron, for everything.”
(Aaron leaves)
(Larry, still in the hall on his cell phone)
“Pete?...He’s in recovery. He had the same 3 ribs broken, a punctured lung, and a punctured kidney. Doc Micheals was able to repair all of the damage but had to use screws to fix the ribs. He said Brian lost a lot of blood and will be in ICU when he leaves recovery. Doc doesn’t know how long he will be in ICU or when he might be able to leave the hospital. He did say that he expects Brian to make a full recovery but it will probably take months. That’s all I know...No, they’re not anywhere close to alright, but they’re holding it together, barely...I know and I will...Bye Pete.”
“Hello, Jake? It’s Larry...That’s what I’m calling about. Brian was hurt bad today. He just got out of surgery...I’m sorry, Jake, but I can’t talk about it. I’m not being hateful, but you need to tell Susan to stop asking questions and keep what she already knows to herself. For a lot of reasons, we need to keep this quiet...Please, Jake, just do as I ask. You will know eventually, I’m sure, but right now we all need to keep this quiet...I found out when I went over to tend their animals...Dammit Jake, I was in the right place at the right time! If you’d been helping them on the farm for the last 2 weeks, you’d know what was going on and would be telling ME to mind my own damn business! NOW, do you need anything for Novatec tomorrow?...Ok, it may not be first thing, but I’ll get it out to you before lunch, that’s the best I can promise...Jake, I’m not being an ass. Do not call Morgan! I already told you, we can’t talk about it right now, none of us. You may way outrank me in this company, but you listen to me and you listen close. You know how we are in this company. You’ve known me for almost a year. You were the first man they hired. You know good and damn well that if Morgan or I could tell you, you’d already know! You, me, and Morgan all three know that if she or Brian needs anything, every man in this company will be right there, right now , ready to help. Hell, the same goes for half the people in this town. Right now, Morgan needs to not have anybody calling her or asking her a bunch of questions she can’t answer. She needs to know the company is in good hands. I need to know if you are going to be able to work this job without a net so I can tell her. She’s probably going to be out of the picture until Brian tells her to go back to work. That’s probably not going to happen until he gets out of ICU. I’ll do everything I can to help you and so will every other man in this company. Now, can you handle it or not?...Then that’s what I’ll tell her.”
(Back inside)
“Love, Dr. Beale was just here. Brian’s coming out from under the anesthetic. She said his vitals are strong and everything is going as they expected. She said Aaron is satisfied with what he sees. They will be moving him to ICU soon. Morgan went with her to see him for a minute. When she gets back, will you take us home?”
“Of course, I will. How are you holding up?”
(Holding Larry)
Oh Love, I’m so sorry about the things I said to you at the farm. I’m terrified! I don’t care what happens to me so long as y’all are safe. Brian’s right. Dad won’t stop, ever, until he’s in prison or dead. Childers isn’t the only one doing Dad’s dirty work, he’s just the best and most ruthless at it. I love you. I love Brian and Morgan. If I leave, Dad’ll hunt me and leave y’all alone.”
“Erin Baxter, you have got to be the stubbornest woman I have ever met...including my mother. I know you’re new to the whole God and family thing, but when are you going to get it through your thick head? You trust God and stand with your family. If you leave, your Dad’s going to be the least of your worries. If you leave, I will hunt you. I will not stop hunting you until I find you or die. And when I find you, I’m going to handcuff us together so you can’t leave me again. Get it through that beautiful, thick skull of yours. I’m never letting you go. I said it; I meant it.”
“Ok, we do it your way. Please Love, please, don’t make me regret it.”
“Like I told you, I’m not Mike. I don’t scare easily and I don’t sacrifice my loved ones to save my own ass.”
“You better listen to him Cuddles. He looks like Larry, but he sounds just like Brian. Now let’s go home.”
(In the truck on the way home at a much slower speed) (Larry on his cell phone)
Hey Mom...No, everything’s not alright. Brian came through surgery and is in ICU. The doctors think he will recover but it’ll take time. Is Pop around? I need to talk to him...No Pop, nothing’s alright and Brian’s in ICU. Listen, I know Mom’s gonna have a conniption fit, but I need to stay with Morgan and Erin tonight, maybe longer. I’m sorry to ask, but can you explain it to her so she won’t take a piece of my hide when I come home?...Thanks Pop. I love you both...When I know more, I’ll let you know. I’ll be by after work tomorrow to do my chores...That’s not right. I can’t dump all that on you...I love you Pop. I don’t tell you that often enough...I will...Bye.”
“Love, are you ok? You’re crying.”
“Just my allergies.”
“Don’t give me that. You don’t have allergies. What’d he say to you? Remember, no secrets.”
“He told me he’s proud of me, that I’m being the man they raised me to be, and to take care of you two.”
“Larry, I don’t want us to cause you trouble. Why don’t you just drop us off and go home.”
“I’m stayin’. It’s a little late now for you to be worried about causing me trouble. You should’a thought of that before you told Erin to ask me on a date. I owe you big for that by the way.”
“No, she owes me for that. If I hadn’t suggested it, she might have ended up dating the evil twins.”
“Oh hell. Don’t go there Morgan.”
“Sis, I’ve never dated 2 guys at once!”
“How would you have known, unless you’ve already figured out how to tell them apart? It’s one of their favorite games. It’s also why no girl in this town will date them.”
“I see your point. Ewww, that’s just plain gross!”
“Speaking of the evil twins, I need to call Jake.”
“I already did. He’s pissed off at me, but I have his material order that I will pick up and take to him tomorrow and he says he can handle the job while you are out of commission with Brian.”
“I can’t not be at work. Who’ll…”
“Erin, I owe you an apology. Morgan, you’re just as stubborn as your sister. Erin and I will handle it. You need to be there for Brian where you belong! You heard the Doctor. You need to be there the minute he wakes up to tell him he’s gonna be a Poppa. He needs to know that and he needs to hear it from you. You do your job and we’ll do ours and everything will work out.”
(Back at the farm)
“Guys, I’m exhausted and I’m not feeling too good. I’m gonna go lay down. There’s the couch, the recliner, there’s a couple of cots with the camping gear in the garage. You two work out where you’re gonna sleep, Larry. I don’t care, just not in my bed. That’s Brian’s spot. (Looks directly at Erin) Anywhere else is ok by me. Goodnight guys.”
“Are you hungry, Love?”
“I don’t want you to go to any trouble.”
“It’s no trouble. I’m gonna fix me something.”
“Then as long as it isn’t beets or sauerkraut, make enough for both of us please.”
“I don’t think that’ll be a problem. Both of those are just plain disgusting.”
(Over sandwiches and chips)
“So where do you want to sleep, Love?”
“I don’t care. The couch is fine.”
“I don’t want you to sleep on the couch.”
“Really, it’s fine.”
(Takes Larry’s hand) “No, Love. I don’t want you to sleep on the couch. I want you with me.”
“I told you. I never had a girlfriend before you. I’ve never been with anybody.”
“And I’m not asking you to ‘be” with me tonight, though I would love to ‘be’ with you. I’m asking you to stay by my side just like you asked me to stay by your side earlier. If anything happens, everything happens, or nothing happens; I don’t care. I’ll just be happy to wake up in the morning with you there. That’s all I want is you with me.”
“Ok. I’m sorry I’m so nervous. I just don’t want to screw up.”
“Hmmm, interesting choice of words.” (evil grin)
“Erin!”
“I’m just teasing you, Love. I really do want you with me tonight and I really do want to wake up beside you in the morning. As for the rest, we’ll take things as slow as you want. I’m in no hurry. When the time’s right, it’ll happen. I’m going to go lay down. When you’re ready, put your dishes in the sink and come to bed. If I’m asleep, please wake me.”

(Chapter 12)
(2:30 Thursday morning)
“NO! STOP! DON’T HURT HIM! YOU’RE KILLING HIM! IT’S ME YOU WANT. LEAVE HIM ALONE!”
“Erin, wake up. ERIN!”
“What? Where?....”
“You were having a nightmare. It’s ok. You’re safe. It’s ok, calm down. Come here. It’s ok. Everything’s going to be ok.”
“In my dream, Morgan wasn’t there with the shotgun. Childers got on top of Brian and was beating him and beating him. When you woke me up he was about to shoot Brian again...Please, Love, hold me. Just keep holding me. I’m so scared! Please, don’t let me go, just hold me.”
(Door flies open. Morgan has a pistol)
“ What’s wrong! What hap...Oh, sorry guys.”
“Wait, Morgan! Help me here!”
(Morgan lays the pistol on the dresser and sits on the edge of the bed)
“She had a nightmare.”
“Cuddles, it’s ok. It was just a dream. Larry’s got you and I’m here. You’re ok.”
“It’s all my fault. He almost killed Brian. Brian might still die and it’s all my fault. You got away from Mom and Dad and now I’ve led them right to you. You did everything for me and I did this to you. It shouldn’t have been Brian. It should have been me. I’m sorry, Morgan. I got Brian hurt. I know you can’t ever forgive me but I’m sorry.”
“Cuddles, it’s not your fault. You did what kids do. You grew up and went out on your own. It went down the way it did because Mom and Dad sold you out. Brian getting hurt is not your fault any more than Brian getting hurt was Tabitha’s fault when he defended her. You didn’t lead Dad to us. Dad’s known where I am for a while. He sent me a letter telling me he and Mom were disowning me and to never come back. It shouldn’t have been you or Brian. Dad did this. Childers did this. You...Didn’t...Do...This. You’re right. I can’t forgive you because you didn’t do anything to me or Brian. You didn’t do anything wrong. There’s nothing to forgive. Cuddles, don’t do this to yourself. Mom, Dad, and Mike have already done way more to you than you ever deserved. Don’t do this. We love you and so does Brian. Please don’t do this to yourself.”
“But he came here for me. If I hadn’t come here, he wouldn’t have been here and he wouldn’t have tried to kill Brian. If I had just let Toby have me, none of this would have happened. Dad would have still had me to trade off, you and Brian and Larry would still be safe and Dad would have left you alone. Now, Dad’s just going to send somebody else and somebody else and somebody else until he gets me back or they kill me.”
“You’re not property to be traded off and no woman deserves to get raped. I’ve known Pete all my life. If we do our part, he will put your dad and Childers away forever. Without his money, your dad has no friends, no allies, and no hope. If I know my Uncle, he’s calling in favors with the Feds and law enforcement buddies all over the country right now to get the evidence he needs to put your dad away for life. You’re mine now. Mike was a fool to let you go, and I’m not going to go looking for him, but if I ever cross paths with Toby Mathers and know who he is, he WILL die. If your dad sends anybody else after you, they’ll die too.”
“Cuddles, please, I’ve almost lost Brian twice in two weeks. I don’t want to even think of losing you too. Don’t run away and don’t blame yourself for any of this. Brian’s going to pull through and together, we’re going to beat Dad. We can’t do it without you, and I sure as hell don’t want to try. Are you going to be ok now?”
“As long as Larry doesn’t let me go, I’ll get through the night. I guess I’ll deal with tomorrow when it comes.”
“Ok. Larry, I’m going to leave this here for you. I know you know how to use it. I have another one. Take care of our girl.”
“Thanks Morgan. You know I will.”

(Chapter 13)
(4:30 AM)
“Oh, Morgan, it’s you...You look terrible. Are you ok?”
“Between the morning sickness and not sleeping last night, I’ve felt better, but I’ll be ok. How’s Erin?”
“She finally cried herself out and went to sleep about an hour ago. I heard you in here and didn’t know who it was so I came to check. I guess I’m just being paranoid.”
“Just because you’re paranoid doesn't mean someone’s not out to get you. In this case, we know someone is out to get us. How are you holding up?”
“I’m worried about Erin. I don’t know how to help her.”
“You did exactly the right thing last night. She needed you there and you were. Listen, I know it’s none of my business, but did you two make love last night?”
“No. She said it was up to me. I don’t want to run her off because I made a fool of myself. I’ve never been with a girl. They taught us how it works in school but I don’t know how to do the other stuff to do it right. Besides, last night didn’t seem like the right time.”
“I know you haven’t ever been with a girl before.”
“How’d you know that?!?”
“You told Erin. I’m her big sister; we talk. She needed to talk about it with somebody other than you. She trusts me, so she talked to me. Your secret’s safe. Don’t ever tell Brian I told you, but I’m the only woman Brian’s ever been with. The first time we made love, time stopped, the Earth moved, and the whole world held it’s breath to keep from ruining the moment. I’m ashamed to say I’d had sex before, but nothing prepared me for that first night with Brian. We loved a lifetime’s worth that night. That was almost 2 years ago and it has only gotten better. Listen, I’m not telling you to do it. In fact, as much as I respected you before, that respect has doubled in the last few minutes. I’m just saying not to worry about doing it right when the time comes. It isn’t what you do, it’s who you’re with and the love and devotion you feel for each other that make it so special.”
“Thanks Morgan. When are you going to the hospital?”
“Visiting hours aren’t until 10 but I have an appointment with my OBGYN at 8:30 about the baby. She’s close to the hospital so I was going to go to that and then go to the hospital and wait.”
“I have to get Jake’s parts out to him, but do you want me to take you and Erin in? We can forward the office phone to my cell so no calls get missed.”
“No, I’ll be ok to go by myself, but let’s forward the phones. I want you to keep Erin with you for now. Don’t let her out of your sight. And Larry, thanks for being there for her.”(kisses Larry on the cheek)
“Something tells me I’m going to be there for her for as long as she wants me.”
(9:15 OBGYN)
“Morgan, the morning sickness is nothing to worry about, it’s normal. When was the last day of your last period?”
“February 15th, why?”
“That tells us that you’re roughly in week 5 of your pregnancy. We can’t nail down an exact date.”
“In this case we can. Brian and I have been sexually active for just under 2 years but the only times we haven’t used birth control were the first time, again on our wedding night, and on March 3rd of this year. So the way I figure it, I’m on day 21 of my pregnancy.”
“So you’re 3 weeks in instead of 5. So were you trying to get pregnant this time?”
“No. (Blushing) I had been really upset the whole week before and our nightlife had been nonexistent. I was kinda’ in a hurry to correct that and didn’t give him a chance to put one on. Don’t misunderstand, we planned to wait another year, but it isn’t an oops at all.”
“Well, in that case, congratulations! Now, here’s what I want you to do. Here’s a scrip for prenatal vitamins. I want you to take them just like the directions say. You still don’t smoke, do you?”
“I share a cigar with Brian maybe once a week, if that often, but other than that, no.”
“Well, stop while you’re pregnant. Brian shouldn’t smoke around you either. If he smokes, he needs to smoke outside.”
“We always did that anyway.”
“Good. Now, I know you’re a coffee hound. I’m sorry to tell you this, but no caffeine during your pregnancy. That means no caffeinated coffee, tea, or soft drinks, no energy drinks, no chocolate, no alcohol. Don’t take any medications without calling me first. I’ll want to see you again in 3 weeks.”
“Can I drink decaf?”
“Sure.”
“Maybe I’ll get lucky and my body will think it’s still getting real coffee.”
“HA! So what does Brian think of this?”
“He doesn’t know yet.”
“Well, when do you plan to tell him, when you go into labor?”
“I hope I can tell him before then. I’m going to tell him as soon as he wakes up.”
“When he wakes up? Morgan, you look like you haven’t slept in days and now that comment. What aren’t you telling me?”
“It’s only been 2 days. Debbie, Brian’s in the hospital in ICU. He was badly hurt yesterday. I was going to tell him last night at supper, but supper never happened. His surgeon is a friend of ours and told me to tell him about the baby as soon as he wakes up to give him more reason to fight to get well. I’m going over there as soon as I leave here.”
“Morgan, be careful. This baby is going to take what it needs from you first so long as there is enough. If there aren’t enough vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in your body to satisfy its needs, you and the baby will suffer. You need to eat a solid, balanced diet. You need to stay hydrated. You need to get enough rest. You need to take care of yourself. I changed my mind. I want to see you in a week.”
“Ok Debbie. Is there anything else I should know?”
“Yeah, I’m happy for you two and I’ll be praying for you both.”
“Thanks, Debbie. I gotta get going. I’ll schedule an appointment for a week on my way out.”
“Good luck, Morgan.”
(ICU, 9:40)
Mrs. Marshall, glad you’re here. Doctor left orders that you are to be allowed to see Mr. Marshall as soon as he wakes up. He woke up 5 minutes ago and is asking for you. Let’s get you into a gown, mask, and gloves so you can go see your husband.”
“I’m here, Love. I have news for you. I just talked to Debbie. You’re going to be a Poppa.”
(Brian is on a respirator so he is writing on a notepad)
“You pregnant when”
“You got me pregnant the night Erin came here, ya big stud.”
“Praise God is ok”
“Everything’s fine. Debbie said she didn’t see any problems. We just have to get you well enough to come home. News like this calls for a party and we can’t have this party without Daddy!”
“Lets go room service sucks erin”
“She’s having some trouble sleeping, but she’s going to be ok. Don’t be mad. Larry is staying with us to help with the company, the farm, and Erin. I didn’t ask. He told me he was staying, period. Brian, Erin had nightmares and Larry held her all night. He didn’t leave her side until he heard me in the kitchen this morning and came to see who was there.”
“Not mad knew would happen happy for erin company”
“It’s handled, Love. Erin and the guys have it all covered. You’ll still have a strong company and farm to run when you get back. Don’t you worry about anything but getting healed. You taught me and your men well, Erin too. Everything is under control.”
“Childers”
“Pete’s taking care of it. He’s angrier than I have ever seen him. He’s working hard to keep it professional, but he’s taking this very personal. He wants Childers and Dad real bad. He’ll come through for us. Really, Love, everybody is doing their job and doing it well. Your only job right now is to rest and heal. We want you back, but we need you whole and healthy. You just worry about getting better.”
“Ok tired nap”
“Rest, Love. I’ll be here when you wake. They’ll come get me for you.”
“Love You.”
“I love you too. Now rest.”
(In the truck on the way to supply house Bowling Green) (Radio)
...active shooter situation at Greenwood Mall. Early reports say 4 people are dead and several injured. It is unknown if the shooter is still at large. Police have locked down the area bordered by Scottsville Rd, Cave Mill Rd, Campbell Ln., and Smallhouse Rd. Natcher Elementary is on lockdown and all residents of the affected area are ordered to stay in their homes. We will break into regular programming as we learn more....
“Crap! We’ll have to go the long way.”
“Larry, we were just there the other night! Does this kind of stuff happen often here?”
“I don’t ever remember anything like this ever happening here.”
“Do you have that gun with you?”
“Yes, it’s in the glove compartment. It’s legal there. If we are stopped, do not reach for the glove box. I will tell the officer it is there and follow his instructions.”

(Chapter 14)
“Bout time you showed up.”
Jake, I told you last night, before lunch. It is 10 AM, that’s well before lunch.”
“Don’t get an attitude with me boy, I’ll kick your ass right here!”
“HEY! Who do you think you are!?!”
“Erin, stay out of this! Jake, you might kick my ass and you might not, but if you try, I guarantee I’m not going to stand there and let you. Erin, get the guys to unload the truck. Jake, we need to talk privately...now.”
(Away from the crew)
“Boy, don’t you ever call me out like that again!”
“Jake, what’s wrong with you? You started this for no reason as far as I can tell. You and I always got on real good. What’s changed?”
“When you decided to tell me how to handle my wife and started acting like you’re MY boss and can decide what I should and shouldn’t know about what’s going on. That’s what changed. Just because you’re banging the boss’s sister doesn’t make you my boss.”
“Jake, not only are you WAY out of line, but you got it all wrong. I wouldn’t tell you much and I told you to get Susan to stop asking questions and to keep what she knew to herself because the Sheriff ordered us not to talk about it. I told you not to call Morgan and bug her about it because she is also under orders from the Sheriff to not talk about it, and frankly, Morgan is just barely holding it together. She can’t take any more. I promise you Jake, when I can talk about it, I will tell you everything I know. Here’s what I can tell you. Brian is in ICU. His ribs got broken again, his left lung was punctured, and his left kidney was punctured. He lost a lot of blood. It took the surgeon over 3 hours to repair all the damage. Brian still isn’t out of danger. His kidney could still fail. He is at extreme risk for an infection his body cannot fight right now. As of 9 o’clock this morning, he still hadn’t woke up. Between you and me, and I mean only you and me, Brian might not make it. I think he will and so does the doctor, but the chance of him still dying is there. Morgan and Erin both know that and it’s scaring them to death. The best case is that he will make a complete recovery but it will take months. Now, just to get things straight, I never thought I was your boss and I didn’t decide what you should and should not know. I am not ‘banging’ the boss’s sister. Erin and I are dating, but we haven’t had sex. I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Even if it was true, it’s none of your damn business. I like you and respect you. I hope this crap between us right now is a one time thing and that it’s over as of now, but you need to understand 2 more things. First, if you ever threaten me again, it’s not going to go well for either of us. Second, if you ever insult Erin’s honor again, I am going to make you wish you were never born. Can we put this behind us now or is it going to continue to be a problem?”
“I guess we can let it go, but you need to do a better job of talking to me. You got downright nasty at the end of our call last night.”
“Think about it Jake, by the end of that call you had me so mad I couldn’t see straight. Look, bottom line, the company and the farm both still need running. Brian’s in no condition right now to run anything. Morgan is sick to death with worry over Brian. Erin’s hanging on by a thread. Even so, she’s hell bent to help make things work out. Part of the reason she’s with me today is so I can train her in case I have to come out in the field without Brian. Morgan is going to need all of us to make this work. Brian’s been good to us. We owe it to him to make this happen.”
“I owe Brian a lot. I’ll do my part. As for you and me, we’ll work on it.”
“If you don’t need anything else, we need to go to the hospital and check on Morgan. She hasn’t slept in 2 days and I’ll bet a week’s pay she hasn’t eaten anything today.”
“Go. And Larry, I’m sorry.”
“So am I. Peace between us?”
“Done.”
(...)
Erin, let’s go. We need to check on Morgan.”
