I actually used your tagline last week in a discussion with a coworker of mine about fiction writing. He tells me his mother in law writes swords and sorcery fantasy fiction. I think I see a pattern in RTR that the kids are often smarter than the adults, or at least more in tune. All of the imports have certainly adapted to the family rules quickly.

You certainly have my permission to use it at will. Many writers (thankfully) live by it. It makes for better reading.

I think I see a pattern in RTR that the kids are often smarter than the adults, or at least more in tune. All of the imports have certainly adapted to the family rules quickly. Not so much smarter, but have fewer distractions and less things to unlearn. As far as the tagline, sometimes it is fun to write about fools. Another vote for book 2. I look for new post when I get home from work and through the day on my days off. P.S. Somebody is messing with me (K). I made a post and went back to forum and the story had disappeared. I thought I had messed something up. It had been moved to Completed Stories while I was posting.

Yeah, I told K it was ready for a new home. And yes, it is often fun to write about fools. I give you Bobby Jones as proof. I'm not quite done with him, by the way. He probably wishes I was. Volume II started today at 9:30 EST.

Firstly, I would like to say how much I enjoyed this story. The characters felt very real and I had difficulty putting it down. Fortunately I completeld reading it ar the weekend so the excessively late nights were not too much of a problem!
There was only one thing that grated... the German language. I lived in Germany for five years and, while not an expert, can speak the language and am very familiar with Germans speaking English.
First of all, I don't think "Was ist Falsch" in Chapter 72 is right. 'Falsch' is more 'incorrect'. I'd go for 'Was ist los?' or 'Was ist es, denn?" The 'hierher' should just be 'hier' or omitted altogether "komm schnell”
At a more subtle level, the balance between basic pronunciation mistakes and complex sentences is not quite right. The most common mistakes I encounter from Germans are:
minor tense errors (I go tomorrow) problems with v's and th's (willage for village, dem for them) word order problems ("I have in English the same problem") Overuse of make ... make a conversation, make a photo etc
I hope this doesn't come across as being rude or arrogant. I'm trying to be helpful!
Thanks again for the novel.

Not at all. I studied German in high school and college, but have not had a practice partner in almost 30 years, nor any occasion to speak the language. Furthermore, I was taught "high German", which we both know is the surest way to identify oneself as a tourist, or at least a non-native speaker of the language. I would have said "Was ist los", but was so uncertain of my memory of the language that I stupidly relied on an online translator and changed it.
I you are interested, Vol. II is in production in the stories as they are written section. Thank you for both your feedback and your appreciation.

Thank you, Supermag. There are some gifted writers on this board. I haven't seen him on here for some time, but Jerry D. young is the guy who first inspired me to put the voices in my head into writing.
I hope you continue to enjoy the worlds, friends, and enemies who so often visit me in my dreams. Welcome to the board.

He published all of them in Kindle format and is now republishing them (at slightly higher prices) as "Jerry D. Young's Survival Fiction Library: Book xxx". I just finished this epic story. I am in absolute awe of your talent! You made me wake up at 4 AM today and go back to the computer to read more of the story. I loved all of the players and how you developed their personalities. What was in the tool box?

Glad you liked it teedee. The toolbox is opened in Vol. 2. I'm working on vol. 3 now, but sick friends and a hectic schedule are rightfully claiming first right of my time. I'm writing it as I can, not as fast as I like, but as I'm able. I do hope you noticed the credits at the end of vol. 1. Come along for the rest of the trip with us and welcome to the board.

School schedules are all over the place. Depends on where you are in the country and what the local conditions are. Virginia once had a "No school until after Labor Day" policy because Six Flags wanted the teenagers available for work. Georgia starts in mid-August and ends in June so the kids (maybe the teachers?) can have a break every few weeks. You would need to go to the specific school district (city, county) to see their schedule. For example, the Frankfort County, Kentucky 2016-2017 schedule is here: www.franklin.kyschools.us/Downloads/FCPS%2016-17%20Calendar%20-%20approved%201-25-2016.pdfThe kids started on August 11, 2016 and ended on May 25, 2017. I'm hoping that the eye surgery I'm going through will leave me with somewhat better vision - not needing correction for both near and far in both eyes. The world is a brighter and more colorful place in the eye that received a corneal transplant but it's still blurry - surgeon said at least 3 weeks to get some degree of focus back but I want it now ;-) There's nothing they can do surgically about the "astigmatism" (actually scars on the macula) in one eye so the inexpensive readers are no longer a solution for me.

Optx 20/20 stick on reading lenses can be added to reading glasses for those that need +4.00 gradient or better lenses. Most readers only go to +3.00. The stick on lenses start at +1.00,and go up to +3.00 in .25 increments. To figure out the ones needed. Go to the reading glasses rack in the store and put on a pair that's +3.00. Then try adding closely in front of them a +1.00,and work your way up in gradients till you see the clearest. That will be the gradient to order. Once you get them. Just follow the directions and put them on a pair of +3.00 readers. They will literally outlive the glasses you start them on. The set I had lasted about 12yrs,and outlived 2 pairs of glasses. They have good clarity, and are well made, and are reusable. What ever you do,don't get bug repellant on them. It fogs them permanently. They use to sell them at Wal-Mart,but can only be found online now for about $15.00.

However, they couldn't make my arms longer so I need 2.0 readers ;-) The astigmatism in one eye can be corrected with a hard contact but I don't wear it a lot - I'm old and adjusting to hard plastic in my eye has come slowly. If I know I'll be driving in the rain or after dark, I'll put the contact in an hour or so in advance. For most things at home - from writing to cutting grass - I skip the contact unless I know I'll be at the computer for hours because the "other image" gets more obvious as the day progresses :-(

Example: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0742FNHKZI just finished reading this tale, and I consider it very well done. I love JDY's stuff, but consider most of his stuff to be instructional fantasy. I classify this to be more along the lines of Angery American,Mother Hen aka Kathy in Florida,or Grand. In other words You are now on a short list of SHTF favorites, and I look forward to MOOAARRR!! I've more or less been absent from all the boards for awhile(Since Odumbo was elected.). I am/was very politically vocal on the interwebs, and ended up pissing off someone that had the IRS targeting me for 5yrs in a row. They kept saying my daughter didn't exist, even though she had five of the previous years. This ended up costing me thousands since then to straighten it out. When I went silent on the interweb, the targeted mistakes mysteriously stopped. Imagine that! Once again this is a great story, and I look forward to the next installment. Matt

I classify this to be more along the lines of Angery American,Mother Hen aka Kathy in Florida,or Grand. Matt Mother Hen is in the process of collecting her somewhat scattered works into a collection in one place: www.fictionpress.com/u/1056183/MotherHeninFloridaShe's also completed some of the stories - but, as usual, has also started some more ;-)

Check back and you'll find she's updated 3 or 4 stories today.
Other places may have more posted chapters of certain stories, such as "Starting Over and Over" is at Chapter 74 on tb2k, but others are being updated - hopefully with spellcheck or Grammarly included...
