Very good article. Thanks for posting it. I have a sister in law who said that to me, whe we talked about doing a lot of canning food. She has done so in the past, but quit. (She gave us her pressure canner.)
It brings up my op sec failure of talking to my wife's family. They are all basically sheeple, and will probably stay where they are and starve for lack of any better idea.

My family is all sheep. They are far enough away that I don't have to worry about them showing up on my doorstep. This was a deliberate action on my part.

Nearest family on either side is over 100 miles - but there are a couple of farms there so I'm not likely to see any of those folks. Next closest is about 200 miles and then 400 miles. Based on the almost universal statistic of people having at most a half tank of gas and about 200 miles range for the vehicle, the more distant folks can't get here and the next closest probably wouldn't want to fight the traffic if the highways looked full...
Do have friend who's said "I'll come to your house" but her primary transport is a battery powered scooter. She doesn't have an alternate way to charge it and it's mostly 2 lane county roads to our house and no sidewalks. Did I mention that we're uphill from them? I found a chart of the power needed for an ebike depending on the speed and the grade and I don't think that scooter can make it up the hills of the shortest way between us - or the greater distance of the least hilly way. Don't think the scooter can get in the house except the garage (5" step up to the house) or the basement (no place there to sleep or eat). "I'll come to your house" will not work but she has a master's degree in English so who am I to tell her anything...
