Someone on another Forum asked about loading marbles in a shotgun shell.
It caused me to think of this idea--and I admit that it May be a Stinker.
HMMmmm...
Like most of you, I was inclined to reject this idea out of hand--but.....
Have any of you handled the very heavily leaded glasses?
I did once, at a Lapidary and Gem Cutters exhibition.
Some of the heavy leaded glasses are 70% lead, and they're very heavy--they also have a distinct yellowish cast.
They use windows made of this leaded glass--small portholes actually--to observe some parts of Nuclear Reactors. Where I don't know. Obviously not looking directly into the core.....
And they replace them every so often, just in case they're accumulating micro-fractures.
They are not radioactive. They sell them on the open market. Some Gem Cutters buy the glass, and cut and facet it just as if it were a Gem.
The "Gem" that I handled was Oval Cut--maybe 2 1/2" X 1 1/2" X maybe 3/4" Thick--and as I said, faceted like a big Gem.
I don't believe that a Ball cast of this would swage worth a Damn. On the other hand, the barrel's Modulus of Elasticity should allow a Ball slightly over bore diameter to pass without incident--but lets not.
Anyway, the Lead-Glass Ball wouldn't be quite as heavy as lead--but it wouldn't be like styrofoam either.
Lets get a very accurately sized glass Ball. Lets "Patch" it with a good--but thin--and compressible shot cup. Lets fire it out of a very nearly cylindrical bore--with perhaps the very mildest bit of constriction at the muzzle.....
And it would be interesting to see how it performed at close range.
Maybe it would tend to penetrate marginally, and then shatter--doing some Glaser-Like Shrapnelization, but it would self-destruct at nothing more substantial than a sheetrock wall.
See, I get all sorts of Ideas. This one might be a total loser but the only way to know would be to test it--and I certainly can't afford to--So whoever wants, market it--but do give credit.....
