Unfortunately not much good on the north side of a building where they are shaded from direct sunlight, or in an area constantly shaded by trees.

When the area to be lighted and the sun are not in compatible directions, for low power lighting you need the ones from banggood.com or aliexpress.com which have the solar panel on a 6 or 8 foot cord so the light can face whatever direction you need it but the solar panel can be "around the corner" where there is sun. I have a couple of $13-$15 ones that are good for maybe 8-12 triggers after dark - that depends on how much sun they had that day and maybe the day before. Or the more expensive ($50) multi-head Westinghouse solar-charged motion light on one corner of this house which has the lights facing North but the solar panel facing southwest. There's enough solar power each week for the number of times that painfully bright light is triggered - usually once at dusk (basically a light test as the light level is dropping) and rarely more than once or twice more in a given day. I've never intentionally triggered it until it stopped responding so I don't know how long it can stay illuminated - but it's been triggered every time I've been out moving garbage / recycle bins back to or from the edge of the road after dark or taking things to the bin when it's at the road waiting for the next pickup. painfully bright - it lights things on the other side of the road Current version is listed as 200 watt equivalent. Mine doesn't have the remote control. www.lowes.com/pd/Westinghouse-2000-Lumen-White-Solar-Integrated-LED-Motion-Activated-Flood-Light-with-Timer-and-Remote-Control/5005388519Or two 50 watt equivalent lights for $66. I've not tested these. www.lowes.com/pd/Westinghouse-120-Degree-2000-Lumen-White-Integrated-LED-Motion-Activated-Flood-Light-with-Timer/1001302962

I have a couple of the motion sensing lights with the remote solar panel for exactly this type of situation. I am hanging on to them until after I move and get settled in. I have a plan for them at that house.

I have four interior Mr. Beams motion sensor lights that are small enough to sit on the trim over a door (50 year old house, 6-panel wood doors) and those lights use 4 AA cells. The deal on a dozen Amazon 2400mah NiMh cells I posted some months ago has those small lights powered with rechargeables. The motion sensor has maybe 160 degrees of sensing so you will trigger the light if you're within maybe 10 feet of it. It's not blinding light but it's enough to find your way through a room when power is off. There's a generic rechargeable motion sensor light mounted on the ceiling over the stair to the basement. Nice to have light if the power goes out while going down and up the stairs ;-)
