One of the classics of 20th century "how to" books: the 7 volume set of books from Dave Gingery in hardback. Described as "complete 7 book series including; The Charcoal Foundry, The Metal Lathe, The Metal Shaper, The Milling Machine, The Dividing Head, The Drill Press and The Sheet Metal Brake". $64.95 + tax, free shipping www.amazon.com/Build-Metal-Working-Scrap-Complete/dp/1878087355/That's price-competitive with buying all seven books in ebook format and you can use it by the light of the (hopefully coal) fire in your forge ;-) I'm no longer able to swing a hammer big enough to to be useful for most metal work but this might be a great investment for someone wanting to be able to build/repair horse-drawn farming implements - or perhaps even human-powered implements. If you have the typical tools to build the basic pieces, you could be building bigger things when the SHTF. You build me a <whatever I need> I'll make you good deal on a 20 watt solar panel and a controller to charge your kid's game that he's been screaming about for weeks ;-) It's not always intrinsic worth, but worth in immediate circumstances that's important.
