Not just there...we've dropped from over 10kwh/day to around 4kwh. Time to rack up some more panels, eh?

More panels, a stream to power a waterwheel, a wind generator - pick one or more ;-)
It's very impressive how much power can be generated by a small waterwheel-powered vehicle alternator. If it runs 24 hours/day and only produces 15 amps, that's still 360AH and it's almost always there. If you have a spreadsheet that can tell you how long your solar power can run "everything", add 360AH to the size of your battery and see how many additional hours of power you get. An alternator modified with permanent magnets (the PM mod) produces more power than a non-modified alternator because it needs no power for exciting the field. Every little bit matters when you are providing your own power ;-) If you don't have that spreadsheet, I can provide links for a couple.
If I had property in the right place (I don't) it might be possible to have water power most of the year, wind power when there isn't enough sun and solar power on every sunny day. That's sort of like having that "Perfect Five Acres" to put a homestead on. Unless someone purchases the movie rights to one of my books, I'm not likely to have the $$$$$ to A) install as much solar power as I'd like to have or B) buy that perfect 5 or 10 acres and the machines/animals needed to make it into a homestead with solar, water and wind power. Until then, I'll continue to dabble in solar and probably expand the "Wait until daylight" solar-charged backup system (currently just big enough for "cabin in the woods with a very small fridge" power if it were the only source).
Being 70+ means being close to good medical care is more important than being on that perfect but typically remote homestead... I even have some ideas on where my "perfect" place in the mountains of north Georgia or North Alabama. I've been through some of the backroads in both areas and - like the road up to Chimney Rock, NC, there are switchbacks where you can see the rear license plate in one of the side mirrors ;-) But getting airlifted from those places for medical care in winter would be expensive :-(
