Chapter 54
“This is a nice Jeep.” Faith said, when they got back to the UXV.
“Yeah, I needed it if I was going to ask you out on a date.”
“Oh? I could have driven.”
“My male ego wouldn’t allow it.”
“My hero.” Faith said, fluttering her eyelashes.
Chase rolled his eyes and unlocked the UXV and went inside. He took a metal bottle of water out of the fridge and took a long drink.
“Do you want something to drink?”
“No, I’m good.”
“I’m going to run the truck back over to Jer’s. I’ll be back in a minute. Make yourself at home.”
Jeremy wasn’t home, probably still fishing, so Chase hung the keys on the inside of the storm door and walked back to the UXV.
“I feel like a pizza. Is there anywhere we can go I can get a decent pizza?” Chase said as he entered the RV.
“Brick Town Brewery in Fort Smith.” Faith replied.
“Let’s go!”
“I need to go home and change I…”
“You are fine. I like the look of you in tight jeans.”
“Well, let me use the bathroom then.”
“I’ll be outside.”
Chase sat in the vehicle and played with the touchscreen for a couple of minutes. Faith came out, locked the door on the RV and jumped in the Jeep. Chase started the vehicle and wheeled it around, heading for the gate. Forty minutes later, Faith was directing him to the restaurant. It was a nice looking place and they quickly found seats. They each ordered a beer and to start off, shared a plate of nachos that had smoked pork shoulder in it.
“The Jeep drives good, doesn’t it?”
Chase took a sip of the beer. “Yeah, I like it. The engine is more powerful than I first thought. Of course, I only did the test drive.”
“What made up pick a Jeep?”
“When I saw it, I liked the looks and made up my mind about some things.”
They munched on the nachos and ordered a combo pizza. Chase had the one beer and switched to sweet tea. After finishing off the pizza, they went back to the nachos. Laughing and talking, the time flew by. Chase glanced at his watch and said, “I need to be getting you home.”
After the beer and tea, Chase excused himself to use the restroom.
Chase, I called Momma. I don’t have to go home if you don’t want me to.”
“Do you want to stay the night?”
“Yes. I just need to stop by Target to get a couple of things.”
Chase paid the bill, left a good tip and they headed for Target. Faith grabbed a cart as they went in and headed for the clothing section. She picked out a pair of jeans and laid them in the cart.
“Get two, you can keep a set in the RV.” Chase said.
Faith picked out a couple of identical T-shirts and said they were her “lake uniform.” Chase had her get a couple of shirts too. She got underwear and a pack of socks then over to get a toothbrush, hairbrush and deodorant.
Do you want something to sleep in?” Chase asked.
“I’ll just wear one of your T-shirts if I wear anything at all.”
Chase paid for the items and they headed back to the lake.”
When they got back to the UXV, she pulled the tags on the clothing to wash the sizing out and did a wash. They sat out late sipping wine and talking until the clothing had dried.
“Faith, since the party on the 4th of July, I’ve had deep feelings for you. It has grown every day until I can’t stop thinking about you. I hope I don’t scare you away, but I’ve fallen deeply in love with you.”
“Chase, we’ve known each other for only three months but I am certain that you are the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I fell in love with you the first time I talked to you. Every hour I’m away from you I feel an emptiness in my heart.”
“Then I guess I can say ‘I love you, Faith Hansen.”
“And I love you Chase Cameron.”
Faith folded the chars and leaned them against a wheel while Chase retracted the awning. They went inside for the evening.
“Brian, are you free to come over?”
“Sure Dad. I just finished churning the compost. I’ll be over in a few minutes.”
When Brian arrived at his dad’s place, Jeremy was sitting on the deck with his travel pack sitting beside him.
“Going somewhere?”
“Yeah, I need to go down to Greenville for a couple of days. A plane is picking me up. I wanted you to take me out on the hovercraft so she doesn’t have to pull up to the dock.”
“Okay, no problem.”
“The bass are getting bigger. By next summer they will be eating size.”
“The crappie should be too, Have you tried catching any yet?”
“No. What kind of bait do they like?”
“This time of year minnows or crickets. You can always use spinner baits and jigs too. When the water gets cooler, I’d stick with minnows.”
Jeremy looked at his watch. “She’ll be here in 30 minutes.”
The went down to the boathouse and Brian used the 4x4 to pull the trailer out. After moving it off the tilt trailer, Brian took Jeremy half-way down the lake and stopped near the south shoreline. They watched as the Kodiak 100 settle down on the water and slowed down. Brian cranked the hovercraft engines and moved out to the plane where Jeremy stepped off the hovercraft and onto the pontoon, opening the door. Brian handed his dad his travel pack and Jeremy set it in the back seat. Climbing in, Jeremy waved and Brian moved the hovercraft back to the shoreline. The pilot moved the plane closer to the east end of the lake and turned around. Advancing the throttle, the pilot lifted off in a 3/4 of a mile, gaining altitude until she could clear the ridge and then headed southeast. Brian took the hovercraft back and while he had the craft out, loaded the buckets of feed onboard and fed the fish.
After Chase dropped Faith off at the market, he headed to Jason’s place. Jason was putting together the form for the greenhouse floor.
“Hey Chase, how’s it going?”
“Pretty good Jason. What are you doing?”
“I’m building a greenhouse, or rather I’m going to put a couple of greenhouse kits together. I need to get the concrete floor in first.”
“Jason, how did you find your land?”
“Alice Morris, a realtor at Morris Realty. You thinking of buying some land?”
“Yeah, it’s in my mind.”
Jason took off his tool belt and tossed it in the back of the Gator. “Come on. Hop in.”
They got into the Gator and Jason drove to the back of the property to a dirt road that ran adjacent to the property and turned left. Three quarters of a mile down the road they came to an intersection. One the right was a faded for sale sign. It had been up for so long the telephone number was illegible.
“I don’t know if this is still for sale, but it wouldn’t hurt to check.” Jason said.
They got back in the Gator and turned up an old overgrown drive and drove around. It wasn’t as open as Jason’s property but it looked decent. Jason turned around and they went back to Jason’s.
“I appreciate it Jason. I’ll check on the property.”
Chase stuck around and helped Jason drive in the stakes on the form sides. They set the rebar in and on supports. Soon they had the form ready to pour the next day.
“I appreciate the help Chase. You’ve saved me a couple hours of work.”
“Don’t mention it. I think I’ll head into town to see that realtor.” Chase said.
“Well, good luck!”

Chapter 55
Chase finally found Morris Reality. He had almost driven passed the building but was able to slow quick enough to turn into the parking lot. He walked in and a middle-age woman looked up from her desk.
“May I help you?”
“Yes ma’am, I’d like to inquire about some property that might be for sale.”
“Where is the property?”
“It’s at the corner of 346 and Hubert Road.”
“Let me see if it’s on the MLS.”
Ms. Morris typed in the location and found the property.
“Yes, there are 98.89 acres in the tract.”
“How long has it been listed?”
“Well it’s been sitting idle for six years, I suppose because the original realtor who listed has been dead for three years and I remember the family who owns it. They moved to Alaska several years ago.”
What were they asking for it?”
Let’s see, $2650 an acre.”
“Could I put an offer on for it through you?”
“Yes, of course. It might take me a little time. There is no information about their Alaska address or phone number. What would you like to offer?”
“$2500 an acre.”
“All right then. I’ll start the paperwork. I’ll need you to fill out some things.”
When Chase came out of the office, he sighed. All he could do was wait. He got back into his Jeep, did a search on his GPS for Shopping, set the address and headed out of town.
Jenna pulled the partially frozen meat out of the freezer and began slicing it into thin strips. Brian mixed the marinade, adding two bulbs of garlic to the mix and set it aside. He got more of the partially frozen meat and began slicing also. Having the meat partially frozen made it easier to slice and you could control the thickness of the slices easier. When they finished, they had about 25 pounds of sliced beef. Placing the meat into 2-gallon ZipLock bags, Brian poured the marinade over the meat, evenly distributing the pungent marinade between the bags. After squishing the meat around in the bags, mixing the meat and marinade, these were put in the refrigerator overnight. Brian would cold smoke the meat for two hours in the morning then transfer it to the dehydrator. Brian always promised not to eat too much but between him, Joe and Dave, it never lasted long. Jenna was the keeper of the jerky and when it was done, she would be the one to divided it out into vacuum sealed bags and partial it out to the men.
“Are you going to the Tree?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“Go ahead and take two of the oldest cabbage heads too. I’m going to use the rest mostly for kraut.”
Brian drove down to the root cellar and loaded the basket into the back of the Gator, then went back in and got two cabbage heads. Laying them in the basket, he headed down to the Tree. Taking the basket out of the back of the Gator, he sat it down. Out of the brush in the wood line came the big female and the smaller Howler. Brian picked up the empty basket, walked back to the Gator and sat down. The two Howlers came up to the basket and the smaller one sat down and began gnawing on a cabbage, working the leaves loose and eating them. The big female just watched Brian. Finally, Brian cranked the Gator, backed up and turned around. In his side mirror he saw the big female pick up the basket and the two walked deeper into the woods.
Brian parked the Gator and went over to the compost bin. The day before he had turned the compost with the rotary tiller and added the package of redworms soon after FEDEX had delivered them. He laid his hand against the canvass covering and felt the heat of the decomposing material. The heat would keep the worms from borrowing deeper into the material for the winter and they would help in the decomposing of the material. Brian called Jenna on the radio and asked her how many cabbages she needed and went to the root cellar. Putting the 8 heads of cabbage in a basket, he then carried them back to the Lodge and began helping Jenna slice them up.
Chase followed the GPS directions into Fort Smith and found the jewelry store. He went in, bought the solitaire and was headed back to the lake within the hour.
When he got back to the RV, Chase changed and washed the sheets and wiped down the counters. The spray cleaner gave the place a pleasant smell. The temperature was in the low 60s so he opened all the windows and let the RV air out. Chase went outside and laid out the grass mat and uncovered the 47” fire pit with a swivel grilling grate that he had bought at Tractor Supply. Chase was craving a couple of burgers for dinner. He built a fire and gathered more wood out of the forest for later. Chase expected Faith to show up after work and wanted everything ready. After the fire was going good, Chase grinned and went inside and pulled out Faith’s “lake uniform,” a pair of half-socks and a pair of jingle moccasins for her to put on when she got there. Draping the clothing over the edge of the bed, he sliced a tomato and an onion, pulled some lettuce leaves and placed them back into the fridge then went to check the fire.. The dry wood had burned down quickly so he added more wood. Going back inside, he set out the wine cups and grabbed a beer. He was sitting in his chair, sipping a beer, when Faith showed up at 5:30.
The three men and two women sat at the table had looked at the videos and listened to the audio files. They looked at one another.
“This stuff is kryptonite! It could cause a lot of resignations.” Cheryl said.
“Let’s make sure you have the complete file. We don’t want any selective editing of any of the files. Diana, can you get these distributed?”
“Yes, the plan is to have them sign for the delivery. If any of the organizations refuse to show it, We’ll have them down for the coverup and produce an exposé to expose the collaborators. We’re also sending copies to several members of the House and Senate.”
“Well,” Jeremy said, ”I guess we’ll see what rats run out of the burning building when this goes down.”
The coals were just right and Chase was just putting the four burgers on when Faith arrived. She sauntered over and kissed Chase.
“Honey, I’m home.” Faith said, smiling.
“Go inside and change.” Chase said.
Faith looked at him in surprise but went into the RV. She immediately noticed the clothing and smiled, grabbed a quick shower, and donned her “uniform.” When she came back out Chase was just taking the burgers off the grill. Faith held the door open for Chase and they both went back inside to make their burgers. Chase got out the cheese slices, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, may, catsup and mustard. Faith reached back into the fridge and got the jar of dill slices also. After they had made their burgers, they added chips to the plate. Chase got two Pepsis out of the fridge, Faith got napkins and they went outside to eat by the fire.
Jeremy sat at the bar sipping his drink. The videos and audio wouldn’t bring down the government but it would expose the collusion between the Establishment Republicans and Democrats in that stinking political quagmire on the Potomac. The people were slowly being awakened to the coverups the politicians and media had run. “Right Wing Conspiracies” were being shown to be reality and the people were becoming angry.
Faith tossed he paper plate into the fire and leaned back in her chair. “That was delicious!”
“Want another? I cooked four.”
“No, I’m full, but I have a suspicion the extra burger won’t go to waste.” Faith grinned.
Chase finished his second cheeseburger and took the fourth burger inside, wrapped it in plastic food wrap and put it in the refrigerator. Picking up the wine cups and taking the wine out of the fridge, he went back outside. He poured their wine and sat back down.
“Busy today?” Chase asked.
“Well, not really, unless you call unboxing six cases of bananas, two cases of oranges and a case of tangerines, plus 8 cases of pecans, roasted peanuts, English walnuts, three cases of candied fruits and two cases of canned boiled peanuts, busy.”
“It’s a month before Thanksgiving. Why all the nuts?”
Faith shrugged. “People like to get them for fruitcakes. They start making them now and soak them in rum or whatever for Christmas. Do you like fruitcake?”
“I do!”
“Well, I haven’t ever made one but I could try”
“You don’t have to bother. I’ll find some of the Claxton fruitcakes they get in the stores. I’ve always liked them.”
“Then I’ll find you your Claxton fruitcake. Come help me, I have something for you.”
Faith got up and walked over to her Jeep and opened up the back. Inside was a duo camping chair/loveseat.
“I get tired of sitting away from you.” Faith said.
Chase carried the chair over to the fire ring and set it, added a couple of pieces of wood to the fire and sat down next to Faith, putting his arm around her.

Chapter 56
Chase was adding more wood to the fire when his phone rang. It was Alice Morris.
“Mr. Cameron, your offer was accepted. If you will come to the office in the morning to sign some papers and have check ready, we can get this over and done with.”
“Ms. Morris, I might not be able to get a check in by FEDEX until Monday morning.”
“That’s fine. We can just get most of the paperwork out of the way. We still have to do a survey check and a title search. If you could come into the office at 9:00 we can quickly get a lot of paperwork done.”
“Okay ma’am, I’ll see you in the morning.” Chase said, ending the call.
“Who was that?”
“My realtor. I’m buying some land, 98 acres.”
“Where?
Southwest of here, on the other side of the ridge. It’s only about, I’d say, three miles as the crow flies.”
“Can we go see it?”
“Too late now. We can go in the morning after I meet with Ms. Morris.”
“I can’t wait!” Faith said, kissing Chase on the cheek.
Early the next morning Jeremy reeled in another small bass and released it. He looked at the location on the GPS/fish finder and saw he was at the wrong waypoint. He moved over about 100 feet, close to a crappie structure and using small minnows, began catching crappie. They were getting bigger, and he would have kept them in a survival situation, but he returned them to the water. It would take 6-12 of the fish this size to make a meal. By the next summer, they would be keeping size. Jeremy laid his spinning rod down and walked back to the driver’s seat. Starting the big engine, he headed back to the dock. When he docked, he checked his phone for the weather forecast and saw there wasn’t any prediction of rain so he decided to leave the boat there. If rain had been forecasted, he would have put the boat away in the boathouse. He didn’t like bailing water or running it out through the drain holes at full speed. As he gathered up his rod and tackle box, Jeremy saw Faith’s Jeep CJ5 going toward the gate.
Chase did his situps and pushups and decided to forego the run this morning. He could put on a wetsuit and swim in the afternoon. The water was getting a little chilly. After showering and dressing, he hurried into town and got there at 8:55. Faith was going to meet him at the market after he was finished at the realtor’s. He had called Marcus Whitman last night and had him FEDEX two checks to Ms. Morris’ office to cover everything. One of the checks he would use to open an account at the local Chambers Bank. An hour later, during which FEDEX delivered an envelope, the paperwork was complete. Ms. Morris wouldn’t deposit the escrow until the survey was done and the title came back clear. Chase finally left the office with an enlarged copy of the plat map and took the other check and opened the account at the bank, however he wouldn’t be able to draw funds for another 3 working days, which would be Wednesday. That didn’t bother Chase. He had enough cash in his safe to cover him except for large purchases. When he got to the market, he was immediately put to work helping to unload a delivery truck and stacking the cases where the women directed. A couple of hours later after the bins of fruits and vegetables were full, Mollie had Chase stack the rest of the cases in the back storeroom. Faith could take off now. They grabbed a quick lunch and headed to the property. Faith followed Chase in her CJ5 back to the lake. When they pulled up to the UXV, Chase remained in his Wrangler. Faith walked up to him and said, “I thought we were going to the property?”
“We are, get in.”
Faith scrambled around and got in. Chase pulled out and headed around the shoreline of the lake, heading to the dam, but before reaching it, turned left on a trail. He followed the trail until he came to a dirt road and turned right onto it. They kept on until they came to an intersection and Chase pointed to the right.
“That’s the property.”
They parked the Wrangler and started walking. Faith pulled out her phone and opened her Google Earth app. “Jeez! Where are we? The lake isn’t on here!”
Chase took out his phone, opened up his Tactical NAV app and a red dot showed, within 30 feet of where they were located. Faith compared the two satellite maps.
“Look! This is showing a long building over to the northwest of here! Let’s go look!”
Faith took off and Chase followed her, grinning. In about 400 meters, there was a long building, possibly an equipment shed.
“Holy cow! Look! That’s a 1956 Chevrolet 6400 Flatbed but it is a dump bed. Oh! Look here! This is a ’56 Series 3100 pickup!”
Faith lifted the hood on the 6400, and underneath was a newer looking engine than Chase expected.
“This is a 454 big block Chevy engine but has a carburetor, coil, and distributer. No electronics. I could get this running in no time!” Faith said.
“You could get these running?”
“Hey! I rebuilt that Camaro by myself! Just had the upholstery and paint done. You’ve already got farm trucks!”
Faith, using the two phone maps, guided them as they wove their way through the short bushes that had grown up over the years. They finally found where the old house stood, junk cars and equipment parked all around.
“If I were you, I’d get that well capped and drill a new one.” Faith said.
“Yeah, there’s a lot of work to do here.”
Faith turned away and didn’t hear Chase following and turned back around. Chase was on one knee holding a ring out.
“Faith, would you marry me and help me turn this place into a home?”
Faith fumbled with the phones as she slowly walked back to him, finally just dropping them in the grass.
“Yes Chase, I’ll marry you!” Faith said, tears filling her eyes.
Brian looked at the list and compared it against the inventory.
“The items with the stars beside them I want to get those in #2 can sizes by the case. We eat them often but one #2 can will feed us both. Jenna said.
“Well, if Sam’s doesn’t have them then we can order them through Food Saver.” Brian said.“ I’ll hook the trailer up and we can have lunch afterward in Fort Smith and go by Sweet Frog.”
“I wish we could bring it back.”
“I’ll take an extra cooler or buy one and if we set the yogurt down directly on the dry ice, it will stay frozen.”
Brian hooked up the enclosed trailer and placed the coolers inside. When he pulled up to the Lodge, Jenna got in and they headed for Fort Smith.
”Today the Committee on Homeland Security interviewed subpoenaed witnesses on the lack of success in investigations in the deaths of several prominent politicians and judges. What little evidence they have led to nothing but dead ends. Although security has been increased for all those thought to be targeted, there has still been deaths of those who have pushed anti-Constitutional agendas. Fewer bills are being pushed but those who had submitted them before are still dying at an alarming rate under suspicious circumstances. Almost every state has had to hold special elections. The upside of the targeting of individuals though has been the increasing lack of anti-American rhetoric, after two hugely biased media news readers went missing. Neither of them has been seen or heard from since. The FBI is still investigating but refuse to comment on whether they have any leads.”
Jason and Freya filled the last planting bed with planting mixture. Freya began planting some broccoli and Brussels sprouts she had started from seed while Jason fired up the outdoor boiler. He returned to the greenhouse, set the thermostat and helped Freya finish the planting.
“What else are you planting?
“Well, I’ve got things growing under grow lights. I want to install the lights above that bench over there and move the trays out here out of the basement. With the furnace and lights, it will be warm enough.”
They went inside and Jason moved the lights to the greenhouse and installed them while Frey began carrying the trays of sprouting cups out. It was almost dark as they finished. As they cut off the light, they saw a set of headlights coming up the drive.

Chapter 57
Jason gave Freya a hand signal and she quickly ran over to the bank building and drew her LC380 and got into a kneeling supported position. Jason left his pistol holstered but turned slightly to keep his pistol out of observation of the occupants of the vehicle. He stood casually as the vehicle drew closer. The driver sounded his horn and stopped 20 meters from Jason and shut the engine down.
“It’s me Jason! Chase!”
Jason relaxed and waved. Freya holstered her pistol and came out from around the building.
“Damn! What’s got you on a hair trigger?” Chase asked.
“Can’t be too careful, out here.” Jason replied. “You all come on in.”
Freya hooked arms with Faith and walked up on the deck and entered the house from there. Jason and Chase took a seat on the deck, next to the fire that was burning in the fireplace at the grilling station.
“I bought the land up the road.” Chase said.
“That’s great Chase!”
“I also asked Faith to marry me.” Chase continued.
“Well, that’s even better news!” Jason grinned.
They heard Freya squeal inside and grinned at each other. The women were quickly outside with beers for the men.
Jason, Freya…”
“…asked Chase to marry her.”
“I DID NOT! But if he had waited any longer I would have!” Faith replied.
Everyone laughed.
“So, what’s the plan?” Jason asked.
“Well, I’ve got a lot of cleaning up to do on the property, There’s a lot of junk equipment and vehicles over there that need hauling away, and a bit of dozer work to do.”
“Well, if you need my tractor and bush hog, You’re welcome to use it any time.”
“Thanks Jason, I appreciate that.”
“Larry Davis buys junk cars and such to sell for scrap. I’m sure he would take all you have.” Freya said.
“Well, here’s to the newly engaged couple.” Jason toasted, lifting his bottle.
“I’m going to need your advice. I’m new at this homesteading thing.” Chase said.
“We’re glad to help any way we can. Neighbors help neighbors.”
“When are you two tying the knot?” Freya asked.
“We haven’t even discussed it yet, but I want to have something to bring her back to after the wedding.” Jason replied.”
“We can live in the UXV until the house is finished just fine, thank you.” Faith said, laying her hand on Chase’s forearm.
“Well, I guess a wedding will be sooner than I figured on then.” Chase grinned. “By the way, have you been working on the trail to the lake?”
“Yeah, I took the tractor and box blade and worked on it a bit to level it out.”
“We came that way this afternoon. I wouldn’t want to take a car over it but it’s not bad.”
“You going back that way?”
“Yeah, I’ll use my G’s.”
Jason nodded. “Good. Otherwise, you’ll light up the sky on the slope.”
“Chase, we need to get going. I need to fix us some supper.” Faith said.
“No! Stay with us and eat! I’ve got pot roast in the crock pot.” Freya said.
Chase grinned. “I won’t turn down pot roast.”
Freya and Faith went inside.
“Jason, where did you get your shelter?” Chase asked.
Beth Hardison looked at the message and shrugged. If they wanted to reposition her and her plane, so be it. They had the money, they paid the bills. The guy didn’t need to be picked up until Thursday and it was just a slight detour on the way back from her flight to Lake Charles.
It took a few tricks, but the concrete was poured and the shelter crew had finished covering the shelter buried in the slope. The airbrush crew would be out to put the final touches on the concrete in a few days. The 60’x60’ shelter would provide ample security. The crew would be installing the container home on the roof the first of next week. Thank you Senators Blake and Edmunson. Jeremy took the drone out of the case and flipped the switch on the controller. The drone lifted off the ground to 100 feet and Jeremy began taking pictures of the area.
Larry walked around the property with Faith and Chase checking out the junk.
“I’ll give you $800 for the lot.” Larry said.
“It’s yours.” Chase said.
“But don’t you dare touch those trucks in the equipment shed, Larry!”
Larry grinned. “No ma’am.”
“When can you get started? I want to get a well drilling rig in here as soon as I can.”
“We can start tomorrow. I can only get a couple of cars on the truck at a time, them not being crushed, but I’ll see about getting another truck.”
“Okay, that’s good. I’d like to start getting this all cleared ASAP.” Chase said.
“We’ll start moving the far out stuff first and work our way in. As soon as you figure where you are going to put the well, we’ll move the junk away from that area.”
“Jenna, Millie and Sally are going to help finish setting up.”
“Okay, thanks. I’m not sure how long I’ll be gone, but hopefully not more than six days, depending on how much she has to pack. I’ll ride with the driver to make sure he finds his way. The trip itself is less than 300 miles so that portion shouldn’t take that long. I’ll tell her to give you a call when she takes off so you can be here when she lands. I placed a case of buoyant smoke signals inside. Throw one in the water in front of the ramp and have the Gator ready to tow her into the shelter.”
“Okay Dad, I’ll get it done.”
Beth backed down on the throttle and set her flaps when she had the lake on her left. As she banked and lost altitude, she watched the trees along the shoreline trying to determine any crosswinds. All of a sudden, she saw purple smoke on the water at the other end of the lake. Raising the nose just a titch, the let the plane sink on its own. Feeling the pontoons touch the water, she pulled the throttle back and the aircraft slowed quickly. Beth pushed the throttle forward a notch and taxied to the guy waving on the shore. Jer had said they had done a camouflage job on the ramp and indeed they had. If the guy hadn’t been sanding there it would have been extremely difficult to spot. She lowered the landing gear on the pontoons and rolled up on the ramp to the level area. They guide made the hand signal to turn around and she held the left brake and nosed the plane around. Given the signal to shut down, she killed the engine and turned off the Master Switch. She hung the headset up and went to the rear door.
“Beth? I’m Brian.”
They both heard the big truck coming down the road.
“Just in time!” Beth said.”
She had picked up Jeremy four days before and they loaded her extra parts and oils in the rig, along with her personal goods. Jeremy and the trusted driver had left Okmulgee, Oklahoma prior to Beth taking off. She timed her takeoff so she could arrive at the lake about the same time as the truck’s arrival.
Brian towed the plane backwards far enough for Beth to fuel the plane before storing it in the underground, EMP proof hangar. When Brian opened the door, Beth whistled.
“You went to a lot of trouble here Jeremy. This plane is a Kodiak 100 Series II, one of the first, ordered by USSOCOM. An admiral decided he wanted a sleek jet that got him to Washington quicker. The thing is, this baby was wired with protection from EMP. We’re covered if the plane is flying while under HEMP attack, unlike the poor bastards in civilian liners.”
“’P’ for plenty Beth. Let’s leave the plane out and get your stuff unloaded.”
Brian came out with the tractor and using the fork blades, off-loaded the pallets and bins and put them to the back of the hangar. When the truck was empty, the driver waved and returned to Muskogee. Jeremy got in the Gator and towed the plane into the sheltered hangar and closed the doors.
“Where did you get the shelter?” Beth asked.
Jeremy grinned. “Some Marines decided they didn’t need it anymore. Come on, I’ll show you your quarters.”
They walked to the back of the hanger and went through a sealed door then a few feet more to another door then up a flight of stairs to Beth’s container home.
“This is a container home?” Beth asked, putting her travel bag down.”
“Yep, take a look around. Mine is pretty much set up the same way.”
“Nice.”
Jeremy took a beer out if the fridge and walked out in the deck while Beth conducted her inspection. When she came out, she was carrying a beer also.
“This is much better then what I had in Okmulgee. So, what’s the plan?”
“Nothing really. Just shuffling the cards a bit. Relax while you can. Things could get hot at any time.”

Chapter 58
Larry and Chase chuckled as the men scrambled after uncovering another yellow jacket nest. The weather was just warm enough to make the wasps a little active but not as much as in the summertime. Another man in a bee suit walked up with a propane wand and hosed the nest down. The big all-terrain forklift gave the old car a couple of shakes then laid it on the flatbed trailer, filling the load.
“We’ve only have ten pieces left Chase. I’m saving those two old combines for last. We’re going to have to cut them up and we’ll only be able to put one on a trailer.”
“That’s fine Larry.”
“You sure Faith don’t want to sell the two trucks? I don’t want to sell them. Restored, they’d be worth a lot.”
“Forget that! Faith would be after us both with hay hooks if I were to sell them. She wants to restore them herself.”
“What’s she doing over there?”
“That’s the man from the steel building company. I told her to go ahead and have a building put up. She’s dreaming about having something to work in besides a lean-to shed. You wouldn’t believe how long it has taken her to pick a spot for the building so that it looks ‘pleasing’ to the property. She had a property map made and has every building laid out.”
“Well, that takes it out of your lap. If she doesn’t like it later, she’s only got herself to blame.”
“There is that.”
The loads were strapped down and the trucks took off. Larry went to check out the next potential loads so Chase walked over to Faith.
“So, what’s the word?”
“They’ll come in Wednesday and start moving dirt around for the foundation. Chase, are you sure we can spend this kind of money?”
“I’m sure. You just build what you need. How are the wedding plans coming?”
“Momma has the church laid on, St. Jude Thaddeus, on December the 8th at 2:00 PM. Jenna, Sally and Millie are hosting a small reception afterward in the reception hall.”
“Faith, you know I’m not Catholic.”
“Doesn’t matter. The priest is cool.”
“Where do you want to go on our honeymoon?”
Faith spread her arms, “Right here! Once we are settled, we can go somewhere, if you want, but I want to finish our home first.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Joe and Dave came over to help Jer and Beth unpack her tool chests and arrange them. They set up the shelves and cabinets to store the spare parts and specialty oils. Beth held her FAA mechanic’s ticket and did her own repairs on the Kodiak except for the 4000 hour inspections. She’d fly back to Okmulgee for those. She wanted someone else’s eyes on the work then.
They collapsed the bins and stacked them in a back corner of the hanger and swept up.
“Where do you get the power for this place Jer?”
“Solar and wind charge an overbuilt battery bank. You should have plenty of power as long as you don’t leave the lights on all the time. The bank also powers your house.”
“Cool!”
Beth invited them up for a beer and they all went up and sat on the deck. The weather had warmed up into the 60s and it was pleasant outside.
“It’s nice here.” Beth said, looking out over the lake.
“It is relaxing.” Joe replied.
“How’s the fishing?”
“It’s good, but they aren’t keeping size yet. Next summer there will be fish to eat. Brian is getting ready to dump 300,000 more minnows in so the bass and crappie will be fat, dumb and happy come June.” Jeremy replied.
They finished their beers and the men took their leave.
“Oh Jer! Can I borrow you truck to run into town?” Beth asked. “I need to pick up some things.”
“Sure. Keys are in it.”
”I need to get her a vehicle.” Jeremy thought.
Jason backed the pump back under the shelter he had built for it and connected the hoses. He’d taken it in and had the engine rebuilt, which wasn’t cheap but cheaper than a new pump. All the seals had been replaced and it was running like a sewing machine. He’d only used it twice but the down time gave him a chance to move the yearlings to the other pasture and get some fertilizer to help set the roots for the winter. When he started the pump, the sprayers began watering the fertilized pasture. Jason pulled out the radio and studied it. Jeremy had put a repeater on the ridge above the lake and now they had access to the “LakeNet,” a radio net that covered The Lodge and Washita Lake properties. Freya felt more secure knowing someone was within minutes if she ever needed help when Jason was gone. He changed channels to their home channel and called Freya.
“I’m going to be down here another hour, Freya.”
“Okay Jas. I’m going up to see Faith.”
“Okay. Be safe.”
“I will.”
Freya took the Gator and arrived at Faith and Chase’s property. The driller was there and people from the plumbing company were covering up the septic tank. Faith looked around and saw movement down by the equipment shed; Chase was on top of it. Faith drove down in front of it and parked.
“Hey girl!”
“Hey Freya! We’re replacing some of the roofing tin that was blown off. For as old as this thing is, it’s sturdy and we wanted to keep the water out.”
“What’s that you’re building over there?”
“My garage! As soon as it’s finished I’m going to put tires on those two trucks over there, take them off the blocks and move them into the new building. I’m going to restore them.”
“With all you’ve got going on?”
“Well, it will be a long term project.”
“How’s the house coming along?”
“The architects have finished the changes to the plans. The builders will be out in a couple of weeks to start on the basement. The contractor is coming out tomorrow to go over the timeline with us. We’re building the whole thing with concrete.”
“Hmmm.”
“Don’t turn you nose up yet. It will look like a regular farmhouse, it’s just will be made of insulated reinforced concrete. Wait until you see the plans!”
Freya put on a set of work gloves and helped Faith hand another sheet of tin up to Chase. Chase screwed it on and brought his tools down the ladder.
“Done!”
They heard water splashing and turned toward the drilling site. The crew was removing the drill rods from the well.
“I might be able to move the UXV here quicker than I thought.” Chase said.

Chapter 59
Chase had made a couple of changes to the house plans. First, he added a metal firewood chute that fed into the basement next to the wood-fired boiler. The next change was the construction of a three-sided wood storage building, also of concrete, big enough to store four full cords of wood. This was in addition to the wood storage shed he would build next to a detached garage. The back of the wood shed would face the front of the house and a matching wall would be on the other side of the house. Faith said she would plant climbing roses and Clematis vines to give the walls what she called “artistic definition.” All the exposed concrete would be painted a light Beige. (Faith’s idea). Faith and Chase watched as the first excavator scoop of dirt was lifted out of the basement. They had reached another milestone. The steel building erectors would be there the next week to put the shop/garage together.
“Come on, let’s go.” Chase told Faith
“Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise.”
They hooked up the trailer Chase had borrowed from Brian and headed out to 28 and picked up 71. Faith put some music on and kept quiet as they drove through Waldron and on to Fort Smith. When they picked up I-40 and made their way into Oklahoma, Faith couldn’t keep quiet any longer.
“Where ARE we going?”
“Tulsa.”
“TULSA! Why?”
“It’s a surprise.” Chase grinned.
Faith huffed and settled back in her seat.
When they pulled up to the building, Faith didn’t recognize it at first, but she realized where they were. The company specialized in outfitting garages. Display cabinet units were arranged around the showroom.
“Is Roy available?” Chase asked the first person that greeted them.”
“Yes, just a minute.”
A short man came over to them.
“Roy? I’m Chase Cameron. I talked to you on the phone.”
“Oh yeah! Come over here and we can start with the flooring.”
Roy led them over to a table to look at the rubber interlocking floor panel colors.
Faith couldn’t speak. She had seen these in car magazines but never dreamed she would be able to work on them.
“Pick out two colors. It’s your call.” Chase said.
Faith quickly picked out a medium gray and a black.
“I believe you said you needed enough tiles and adhesive to cover 2400 square feet?”
“Yes, that’s correct.”
“I’ll get your order ready. Is that your trailer out there.”
“Yes, it is.”
Roy left them and Chase took Faith’s elbow and guided her to the tool storage units.
“Pick a unit out.” Chase told Faith.
Faith’s hand flew to her mouth and her eyes watered.
“Oh Chase!”
“Go ahead. Pick your style. Do it up right and don’t worry about the price tag.”
Faith wiped her eyes, took a deep breath and started examining the display units. She opened drawers and doors for almost an hour before she finally made her selection. Chase waved Roy over. Roy came over and stood next to them.”
“Tell him what you want.”
Faith pointed to a unit. “I want that unit.”
“You realize this is made up of different components and you bolt them together?”
“I understand. I want the components to build this unit you have here.”
Roy smiled. “Yes ma’am!”
A grinning Faith watched as Roy wrote the product numbers of every component and got a couple of guys to bring the boxes from storage and loaded them on the trailer. Chase was glad he borrowed the 7x14 foot trailer. As it was, they had to unload the tiles and put the heavier boxes toward the front of the trailer. Faith gasped when she read the invoice but Chase steered her out of the building and into the Jeep. Driving back out of town, Chase saw an Irish pub and pulled in. They ordered fish and chips and sodas.
“Thank you Chase. The shop is going to be beautiful!”
“Well, a beautiful woman who likes to rebuild cars needs a beautiful place to pursue her hobby.”
“Where are we going to keep the cartons until the building I finished?”
“I’ll just park the trailer under the equipment shed.”
“Oh yeah, I forgot. I am so excited! Do you think we can get the trucks moved into the shop before the wedding?”
“Shouldn’t be a problem. One other thing I need to do. I need to put you a woodstove in the shop first thing. In the winter it will be cold as a well drillers butt in Kansas in January even though the building I insulated.”
“Yeah, I guess so. Thank you so much!”
Chase grinned. “Hold off on the thanks until we get home. I’ll collect then.”
Beth did her pre-flight and opened the hangar door. Using the electric aircraft tug, she guided the Kodiak outside. Beth returned the tug back inside and closed the door. Getting into the plane and settling in her seat, she donned the Bose headset and started engines. While the engine was warming up, she set her GPS/AirNAV and watched the instrument screen as the engine warmed to optimum. Rolling into the water she pushed the throttle forward and in about 2000 feet rose into the air. When she was high enough to clear the ridge, she banked to the southeast and picked up a heading for Pascagoula, Mississippi.
The ship maneuvered itself into position. The men quickly cleared the fake masts and net spars out of the way and prepared to raise the missile. All worked diligently and without fear. They knew they would not be returning to their families but were elated they would die as martyrs. Fueling the two stage missile took a couple of hours but they were ready before down. Just as dawn was breaking, flames burst from the rocket, engulfing the ship and started parts of it burning, but not before the missile had safely cleared the ship. Their aim wasn’t exact, but it didn’t need to be. All they wanted was for the weapon to explode somewhere near the center of the Midwest. Two minutes after launch, the ship blew up.
The tracking radar at Keesler Air Force Base quickly picked up the missile and switched automatically to fire control. Three missiles were launched in seconds and tracked to the west. The operators watched on the scope as the anti-ballistic missiles intersected the rogue missile before the first stage could burn out. The primitive EMP warhead ignited putting most of Louisiana, the western edge of the state of Mississippi, east of Dallas to the Sabine River and the southern portion of Arkansas up to Hot Springs under darkness. Responding fighters out of Eglin Air Force Base sped to the launch area but only found debris from the destroyed ship.
The plane rocked along with the flash of light over to the southwest. Beth quickly checked the instrument screen and everything was normal.
“What the hell was that?” Gregg asked.
“I think someone just nuked us.”
Beth scanned outside the plane. All the lights below were gone.
“Looks like an EMP, but it didn’t seem that high. The plane is still good so I’ll drop you off, but I’m taking us down low. I don’t want to be misidentified and get shot down by some scared fighter pilot.”
There was some faint radio traffic, but it seemed distant.
Beth dropped Gregg off at Iron Mountain Lodge after sunrise, quickly taking off again. She looked at the fuel gauge and she had enough to get back to Washita Lake at low level and Beth wasn’t seeing any vehicle movement on the roads.
When she got near Mt. Ida, Arkansas, she began seeing movement on the streets and roads. The missile couldn’t have gone off that high or all of Arkansas would be a dead zone. Staying east of Mt. Ida, she stayed low until she reached highway 28 then banked left to come up on the lake from the west. When she reached the intersection of highways 17 and 35, Beth set flaps and reduced speed. As Beth came over the last ridge, she reduced throttle a little more and kept the nose up, floating down to the lake surface. She kept her speed up and quickly taxied down the lake. Beth saw Jeremy standing on the ramp as she lowered the landing gear and rolled near the hangar door, turned around and shut down.
“What the hell is going on?” Beth shouted.
“Someone launched a missile off a ship in the Gulf. Luckily they brought it down before it got very high. They were probably going for a HEMP over the Midwest.”
“I had just crossed over the Mississippi when that damn thing went. My baby here proved she is a flying Faraday cage. Anyway, instruments were good so I dropped my passenger off and flew on back here.”
“Come on, let’s get this booger refueled and inside.” Jeremy said.
“Yeah, I want to do a complete check on the plane before I do anything else.”
“I’ll make you a couple of BLT’s and bring them up to you.”
“Thanks Jer.”

Chapter 60
Jeremy called everyone to the Lodge for an emergency meeting. Brian and Jenna, Joe, Dave, Beth, Jason and Freya, Chase and Faith were all gathered in the enclosed patio.
“Barksdale Air Force is functioning, but under emergency power. Half of the B-52s were moved to Whiteman to make room for relief aircraft to operate. They’ve made Barksdale the staging point for recovery operations in Louisiana. Spare electrical parts and workers to get the grid back up are being moved into the affected area from all 48 states. They only lost four civilian aircraft and all passengers with a loss of 286 people. It could have been worse. Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma are pretty much taking care of their own. Oklahoma was only affected down in the southeast corner of the Choctaw Nation. All of our people are accounted for and told to stand down until further notice. The Armed Forces are at Double Take and holding right now. I want you all to keep your eyes and ears open for lessons learned and keep notes. What I am looking for are things we don’t have on hand or don’t have enough. Dave I need you to get a list of all the vehicles that are associated with the Lodge and make sure we have spare electrical parts and computers for everyone’s vehicles. Add the McGinnas, Maguires and the Hansen families to the list. Jenna, Faith and Freya. Get Dave the information he needs without your folks knowing what we are doing. Okay folks, let’s learn from this and not get caught with our pants down in the future.”
Arkansas, except for the affected area which extended north for a little over a hundred miles from the Louisiana state line was quickly back to normal. The power surge from the EMP had gone through the grid like crap through a goose in the affected areas and beyond that until it hit the first substation or transfer station. Crews were working 24/7 repairing that portion of the grid. Generator mechanics were in hot demand and would be for months.
As soon as the basement was dug out, crews were setting in the foundation forms and rebar. At first they were confused when Chase told them to leave a doorway in the basement wall until he told them he was putting in a storm shelter later.
Trucks arrived and dropped off trailers of beams, girders, metal roofing, boxes of screws and siding and parked them off to the side. At 8:00 on the following day, a mobile crane and the work crew arrived and began setting the girders. By that afternoon they were attaching the wall bracing and girts. Faith was checking out the U-shaped track for the 1-ton capacity trolley mounted chain hoist Sean had bought for her. The building crew had told her they would install the trolley channel and hang it for her. Chase was looking at the driveway the bulldozer had cut from Hubert Road. It was 260.95 smoots long and had required several truckloads of gravel to complete. So many trucks had been over it the rock was packed solid. He needed to get a handle on the brush and tall grass. Chase went back to where Faith was poking around the old trucks.
“Faith, I really need to start clearing this grass and brush. I need to purchase a mower and chainsaw.”
“Well, another thing you’re going to need is a trailer. You’ll use that for a lot of things.”
Chase pulled out his pocket notebook and began writing. “They can’t build the house any faster when we’re hanging around. Want to take a ride?”
“It will have to be today. I have a dress fitting tomorrow.”
“Let’s go.”
Chase had taken a lot of notes and had the addresses of the distributor from which Jason had gotten his equipment. So the first place he headed for sold trailers. He bought a carbon copy of the trailer he’d borrowed from Brian then headed for the tractor dealership. About a mile from the Deere dealership Faith asked what he was going to buy.
“Well, I want to buy a tractor to work around the place. As far as implements, I want to look around and get your advice on what I could use now and in the future.”
They were quickly greeted by a salesman and Chase told him what he was looking for. The salesman showed him a couple of models and Chase made his decision on the model he wanted, the salesman began querying him on the implements he wanted.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to make up my own mind about what implements I will purchase. If I have any questions I’ll track you down.”
The salesman watched Chase and Faith walked down the line of implements but was ready to swoop in to answer any questions. Chase had his notebook out and made notes as he and Faith talked. When they had completed their walk along the rows of implements, Chase tore the page out of his spiral notebook and started to hand it to the salesman, but he saw something over the shoulder of the salesman that intrigued him. There on display was a ZTrak Zero-Turn diesel mower, Jason had advised him to stick to one fuel if possible. Since his Jeep, and the tractor were diesel, it made sense to have a diesel mower also. He wrote that down on his list and handed it to the salesman.
“I’d like these things added to the invoice. I want to take the mower with me, I’ve got a tilt trailer, but would like the other things delivered.”
The bright-eyed salesman hurried over to a computer and began putting the invoice together.
Faith took Chase’s arm and said in a low voice, “I don’t ever want to hear a word out of your mouth if I suddenly decide to go on a shopping spree!”
“You’re going to be too busy making me sandwiches to be going on shopping sprees.”
Faith smiled and pinched the inside of Chase’s upper arm, making him flinch.
The salesman hesitantly took Chase’s credit card but handed it back with a big grin when the amount cleared.
“I don’t think I’ve ever sold that much on a credit card. Is there anything else we can do for you?”
“I’ll need some fuel cans for the mower. Could you tell me the best place to find them?”
“Sure, there is a farm supply down the road, about a mile and a half on the right that can fix you up. If you can pull your trailer out back, we can load the mower up.”
After the mower was loaded and strapped down, Chase and Faith headed for the farm supply store. Chase grabbed a cart and loaded 5, five gallon diesel fuel cans, picked up a gallon of PRI-D and was headed to the checkout but stopped at the brush cutter display. He looked them over and was thinking.
“What are you thinking about?” Faith asked.
“We’ve got a lot of bushes that are over an inch thick. If I try to take them down with the mower, I’ll end up damaging the mower. If I cut them down to ground level, the high weeds and grass can be cut with the mower.” “Get it. You can cut the brush with that thing and I can drive the mower.” Faith grinned.
“Well first we have to get rid of the brush I cut down. That’s why I included the wood chipper in with the other implements.”
“Okay, then I can drive the tractor.”
Faith pushed the cart as Chase balanced the box on it to the checkout counter. It was 4:00 PM before they got home.
“I need you to fly some stuff down to Grenada Lake.”
“Get me a grid. Some of that lake has tree stumps. How much weight?” Beth asked.
“Twelve hundred.”
“I’ll go ahead and pull the seats.”
“Joe is going with you. He’ll be the contact.”
“Copy that.”
“No!” Faith said, waving her arms wildly.
Chase cut off the brush cutter.
“What?”
“Don’t cut those bushes. They are Goumi berries. They make great pies and jams. They also add nitrogen to the soil. See, they made a hedgerow along the old fence line with them.”
“Okay, just let me know if I’m cutting something down I shouldn’t be.”
They worked the rest of the day on that ¼ acre. After cutting down as much as he could with the brush cutter, Chase used the chainsaw and cut everything else that was four inches and below in diameter. That was as much as the wood chipper would handle. Faith would drive the tractor and Chase would lay down a tarp to catch the wood chips. He would run the trees and brush through the chipper until the tarp was full then moved the tractor. When they had finished the quarter acre, they tied the tarps up and stacked them in one end of the equipment shed. They would use them as mulch in the Spring.
When the garage building was close to being finished, the alternative energy company came and put in the panels, trackers and whatever they did. Chase just said he wanted uninterrupted power and they put things together. They had a big array of PV panels, a wind generator and Chase also asked them to include a backup generator to charge the batteries. He’d already had it in his plans to install fuel tanks.
