I am going to post some partial books here. I will not be able to complete them. Some are very good. My opinion anyway.
They are free to whoever wants to use them, I just don't want them to disappear. I think they need finished.
So, change them in any way you want, make them your story. I am hoping that someone will take them and run with them. Thanks to all the writers out here. I have enjoyed your books immensely.
1st story
WAYNE
“Hello, and you best not be a salesman”.
“Wayne Dupre”?
“Yes, can I help you”?
“My name is Leonard Carson. I am a lawyer from Dupont and Carson's firm in Lafayette, Louisiana”.
“oooKay, am I being sued”?
“Oh no sir. I am settling the estate of a Margrethe Dupre. She has passed away a couple of months ago. I have been trying to locate you. Her will stipulates that everything goes to you.”
“My great aunt Maggie? I saw her last year. She looked OK.”
“Well, it was sudden. She was sick and pneumonia set in quickly.”
She was the closest thing to a mother I ever had!
“Can we set up a meeting? It will not take long, but we are in Lafayette.”
“When do you want me there?”
“Would this Wednesday at 9 AM work”?
“Yes, that will be fine.”
“Great, I would like to get this done. There may be some cousins there, but they won't be a problem.
The will is iron clad”.
“Where is she buried”?
“She was cremated, by her wishes. I have her urn here in my office for you”.
Still in shock, Wayne just said it was fine and the conversation ended.
When he was a kid, he had stayed with his great aunt and uncle off and on. Mainly because his mother was a bit of a wandering sort with lousy taste in men. Aunt Margaret had been more of a mother to him than his real one.
When he had leave in the army, he would often visit Aunt Margaret and fish and relax. He loved the place there. Her husband had died in a war when he was in his late teens and she never married or even dated as far as he knew.
He was sad that she was gone.
Waking up in the middle of the night, he decided he would leave tomorrow, get a room, check out town. It had been a while since had eaten any good cajun food anyway. Since he retired from the army 6 months ago, he had taken temporary jobs. He was divorced and had no idea of what to do with his life.
He did not even own much. His apartment was furnished. The bed wasn't even his. Other than personal stuff, he only owned his Land Rover. Then he thought, oh crap! I must have inherited her property and the house!
Finally sleeping, he got up later than usual and started to pack up what he needed.
By the time he was done, he realized that there was very little left in the house. Wayne sat there thinking this over and kept wondering that maybe he should just pull up stakes now. He would not even need a trailer.
Just before 8AM, he called his job site and told them would not be there. His checks were direct deposited, so he did not even need to go in.
Then he talked to the landlady. He was paying month by month so all he owed her was another month since he did not give proper termination.
She was not happy.
“Look, I am sorry to do this, but I have no choice. In fact, I will let you keep the security deposit entirely for any cleanup you need and for the trouble I have caused. I will be out after today”.
Still a little miffed, she took the offer.
Then Wayne called all the utility companies and canceled everything, telling them to send the final bills to his email.
“Wow, he thought, it is almost 10 and I am done with this place”.
He looked around the apartment making sure he had not forgotten anything.
Checking the Land Rover, he suddenly thought that he felt so much better. He did not like this town and he did not like the work he was doing. He had been in a bad rut since he left the service.
Throwing a blanket over his guns in the back, Wayne left Killeen, Texas.
It was a little over 400 miles. He would be heading south to I 10 and then east the rest of the way, a straight shot almost.
His project over last two years at Ft Hood was a 1969 Land Rover. The body was OK, but the engine and transmission barely worked. He stole it for 1500 bucks as-is. Since then, he had a rebuilt engine that purred and a transmission that was perfect. By the time he was done, Wayne had invested another 10 grand into the vehicle and that did not include the interior. It was worth much more than that now though. Besides, he did not drink much, no drugs, very few women, so he needed to spend money on something.
The ride was uneventful until he stopped at a truck stop at I 10. He filled up with gas and got some food. As he was going to his vehicle, he saw a dog limping across the lot. It was a big dog and wet.
The dog stopped and stared at Wayne, then whined and wagged it's tail a little.
One of the restaurant workers came out about then and said “that damn dog keeps hanging around. I need to call animal control”. Then he went inside.
Wayne went to get in the truck and the dog moved closer, whining. For some reason, Wayne opened the door all the way, stepped back, and motioned for the dog to get in. The dog knew instantly what to do and was in before Wayne changed his mind.
“Cannot believe I just did that”, thought Wayne.
Laughing out loud, he said to the dog, “I guess today is all about change and new starts”.
Wayne got in and drove a block over to a dollar store.
He cracked the window a little for the dog and went inside.
Once done, he came outside with dog food, a couple of bowls, dog toys, and a jug of water.
He cleared a spot in the back of the Land Rover for the dog and dished out some food and water, and the toys.
The poor dog was really hungry he noticed as she had made quick work of the food. After she was finished with the water, Wayne dumped the bowl and got started again. A few minutes later the dog climbed over into the passenger seat gripping one of the toys, and fell asleep.
Wayne drove on, as he patted the dog. Funny he thought, it had not occurred to him to get a dog. His aunt had one years ago and he had liked it a lot.
Just outside Houston, he decided to stop and stretch. When he got out, the dog got out with him and went about it's business, then jumped back in.
“Are you housebroke” asked Wayne?
The dog just wagged and smiled a doggy smile.
“Wayne Dupre”?
“Yes, can I help you”?
“My name is Leonard Carson. I am a lawyer from Dupont and Carson's firm in Lafayette, Louisiana”.

The dog just wagged and smiled a doggy smile.
They managed to hit Houston rush hour traffic, but it was not as bad as he expected. Once clear of Houston the traffic started clearing out rapidly.
By 7 PM they were close to their destination.
Wayne pulled over to a rest stop and started hunting motels that would allow a dog in the room.
He found an extended stay that was okay with it as long as he paid a surcharge. He told them it was a service dog and got a little discount on that, so he paid for a week. He still had no idea how things would go anyway.
The night went very well, although the first thing he did was give the dog a bath. She did not seem to mind. That night he discovered the dog was a cuddler, he did not mind and they both slept hard.
The next morning he started looking for a vet. He did not know much about dogs, but he knew she needed checked over.
Two hundred dollars later, she had shots and an x-ray to see why she limped. Nothing was really wrong. Deep bruising on her hip was the cause and that would get better.
Back at the motel, he decided to call Mr. Carson.
“Good morning Mr. Carson, this is Wayne Dupre”.
“Mr. Dupre, how can I help you”?
“Well, I decided to come early yesterday. I got here last night and am just going to look around town. Check out some cajun food. I just wanted to let you know I was close now”.
“Excellent! I know a place that has very good food and not to expensive. Your aunt loved the place”.
“Really, I had no idea”?
“Well, we were not romantic close, but your aunt and I were close friends. We would dine together at times. How about I take you to dinner there and we can talk about your aunt. I don't like eating alone anyway”.
“uh, that sounds good. I am a little surprised. I have a dog that I need to figure out what to do with”.
“That should not be a problem at this restaurant”.
“If you say so, that sounds good”.
Text me your hotel and room number. I will pick you up at 5. Is that good”?
“That works just fine, thank you”.
Girl, I think you will need a leash, just in case, and your name is Rover now, because of how we met.
Rover just grinned and wagged her tail.
It only took a short trip to get a collar for her tags and a leash.
Hungry, Wayne and Rover were waiting in the parking lot for Mr. Carson just before 5.
Mr. Carson?
Just call me Leonard, may I call you Wayne?
Sure, and this little girl is Rover.
“Rover”?
Laughing, Wayne said, yeah, it isn't original, but I met this girl on the way here yesterday in my Land Rover. She went to the vet today and I needed a name, so”.
Hop on in, I am a little hungry
So are we Leonard.
Parking, Leonard said, this is T-COON'S. Really good original cajun food. Not the tourist crap.
Bring Rover in, they like dogs.
Wayne felt right at home there and evidently so did Rover when some kids ran over to pet her.
Just hang her leash over the knob on that chair Wayne.
Looking around Wayne noticed that he was not the only one with a dog.
I brought us here early cause it gets really busy.
Fine with me Leonard. I am pretty hungry.
Hi, I am Rachel, I am your waitress tonight. What would you like to drink?
You wouldn't have any Mellow Joy coffee would you ma'am?
Of course we do!
I would love a carafe of that please.
What would you like Mr. Carson?
I will have the same.
Be right back, give you time to decide what you want.
Thank's Rachel.
They know your name, so you are a regular here?
Oh yes. I am an old widower that does not like to cook, but I like good food. It has been lonely without your aunt. I think we kept each other from going crazy.
Laughing he said, you know, four months ago I had to work extra hard to keep Margrethe out of jail.
“What! What happened”?
She was a feisty lady, and did not tolerate anyone that was disrespectful or trying to give her problems. One night, some drunks showed up out there and were singing and dancing to loud music at 2 am. She yelled out for them to shut up and go away.
Being drunk, they cussed her out and made some lewd suggestions. They sobered up when she took some shots at their feet and they whined to the police.
Laughing so hard he almost peed his pants, Wayne shook his head. “I wish I could have seen that.”
Oh, here is our food. The jambalaya is to die for.
When they were done...
Wayne, I have had a good time and it is getting late for me. I need to let you know something though.
“I hope it is not bad”.
Not really, just you need to be aware of things here, especially now.
You will inherit everything your great aunt had. There is a lot of land with it. I do not know just how much you are aware of.
Not much really, I figured the house, but that is all I knew.
She owned the house, 267 acres around it, and much more property scattered around. That brings us to the problem.
Everyone around here is aware of your aunt's properties. They worry that the new owner will sell off to a development company. You might get some grief on that idea. Eventually that decision will be yours, but people will not like it.
Hmm, tell you what I decided.
I am going to move into my aunt's house. I do not intend to sell any land of hers or lease it out to anyone. You can tell anyone that if you wish.
You are going to move in?
Since I retired from the army, I have been lost. I actually gave up my apartment before I came here, along with my job. I figured on getting an apartment here, but there is no reason for that.
Amazing, I had no idea you would even think of something like that. Your aunt would be pleased!
The reading of the will is day after tomorrow. The house may need some cleaning. No one has been in it since she passed.
It's all good, I will see you day after tomorrow.
Great. Thank you Wayne!
And thank you Leonard. Next time dinner is on me.
I accept Wayne.
The next day was uneventful. Wayne and Rover drove around town sightseeing. He did drive out to the gate to his aunts house, but went no farther. Wayne wanted to go fishing a bit, but did not want to deal with getting a license or permit. He figured he would be busy enough for the next week or so.
That evening after a couple of beers he dozed off.
He was excited the next morning. After cleaning up Wayne and Rover headed to the lawyers office and got there a little early.
Good morning Mr. Dupre! Would you like some coffee?
“I sure would, thank you”.
After all were assembled, “Ladies and gentlemen, lets get started. This will be short as Margrethe was very sure and specific as to her wishes. I have taken care of the Dupre family for many years and will insure that her wishes are carried out.”
“The last will and testament of Margrethe Dupre, widow of Mike Dupre. I leave everything I have to my nephew, Wayne Reuben Dupre, other than 1000$ to each of the people that appeared for the reading of this will. In the event that anyone wants to fight this in court, they immediately lose the 1000$. You were never there for me or my family, so that is all I have for you.”
As the cousins and others started to argue, Mr. Carson told them to leave. “The other details are private, the rest of you may leave”.
Angry, they all trooped out, still arguing.
“What if they decide to fight it Mr. Carson”?
“That would be unfortunate for them, since most of that part of the family runs meth, and I have proof”.
“You are so bad Leonard. We will be retaining your services”, said Wayne laughing.
Thank you, now, lets get to the important part. The reading of the will. Wayne, I hope you are ready for this. I think you will be satisfied.
Basically, your aunt has left her entire estate to you.
I have the paperwork prepared here. I just need a few signatures from you and the place is yours to move into. There is a letter from Margrethe here. I have not read it, that is none of my business. And here are a few keys and a remote. You will have to figure out where they go. But this one is for the house and the remote is for the gate.
Also, there is a good amount of money in her banking accounts. We will have to go to the bank to insure everything gets changed over properly. I believe the amount is somewhat over 1.2 million dollars.
“What! No way! I had no idea she had that much money”.
“Mike, her husband was very good investing. I handled his business also. In fact, those investments still pay each quarter to the estate.
Taking his aunts letter...
Dear Wayne:
You have been a joy to this old woman since I met you as a baby. I watched you grow into a good man. I prided myself thinking that I had a hand in how well you developed. I have loved and cared for you since the beginning. Since it is my time to go and finally be with your great uncle Mike, I leave you with a few things. The house and all the properties are yours. Leonard has a list of everything. I have trusted him for years, he is a very good friend.
There are some locked up areas in the house that you will be given keys to. No one else knows about them. You will find a journal of our history and details of what your great uncle had done to the house. It is a little more than it seems. I wish I could see your face.
Anyway, the place is yours, but please don't sell it. I will look in on you from time to time. And do not be too shocked about what you find in the journal.
Aunt Margrethe
Tears in his eyes, Wayne folded the letter.
“Well, where do I sign now”?
All done, he thought. And now we see where we go from here.
Are you able to go to the bank today Wayne?
Yes, lets get it done.
The bank trip went quickly, although the banker was trying to kiss up to him all the while.
Rover did not like being left in the truck by herself, but she got over it.
Rover, I don't know the future, but it cannot be as boring as our past.
Pulling up near the gate, he clicked the remote. The gate slid quietly to the side and he drove through. He then decided to close the gate.
As it closed he noticed a strange car stop in front of it and a man got out. Walking toward the gate he asked what he wanted wanted.
Will you open the gate? I would like to discuss purchase of this property.
Sorry, it is not for sale, to anyone.
At that he turned around and got back in his truck.
Bastards already showing up he thought.
Wayne let Rover out of the vehicle to run around and check the place out. He then unlocked the house.
Leaving the door open for Rover, he wandered around.
It seemed a sad place without his aunt there. Some dust, but not too bad. A lot of memories growing up here.
I think I will hire a lady to clean.
Calling Leonard, he asked if he knew anyone reasonable that did house cleaning.
I do. In fact, if you want I will call them. They know me and will get to it quickly.
Thanks Leonard. Anytime that is convenient for them. Give them my number and they can verify the time if they like.
Will do and I think you will like them.
Wondering through the rest of the house all the linens and blankets were there, four furnished bedrooms, a very old TV. Odd, I grew up here for the most part, but never really paid attention to the house. Everything appeared to be in good condition, but dusty.
The phone interrupted him. Hello? Yes, this is Wayne Dupre, how can I help you?
Oh, yes. The place is not in bad shape but needs a good cleaning out since my aunt passed. Lots of dust and it could use a going over.
“Well sir. Your aunt had us come in once a week to clean. We are familiar with the house and grounds and our rates were acceptable to her”.
Then that is fine with me. When will you come over?
In the morning would be fine. I will be in and out today anyway. Thank you, see you then.
Where was I?
Oh yeah, motel, groceries, TV, internet, check with utilities
Rover wandered in sniffing.
This is our new home Rover, what do you think?
You whiner, hungry again?
Checking the kitchen he discovered there was a little in the pantry, but not much. Hey, canned spam. You are in luck little girl. Food for the queen of this property.
Ok then, I guess I need to get my stuff from the motel and get some groceries.
You won't like this Rover, but I am going to leave you here this time. Hmm, that kitchen door would fit a doggy door real easily.
Wayne quickly cleaned out his motel room and checked out. Looks like he lost the money he had spent on that room with such short notice.
On to wally world for a few things. He got some tools, food for a couple of days, a new TV, and a doggy door.
That should do for now he thought. I will just make a list of what I think of.
That is how a guy shops he thought. In and out within an hour.
Once home, Rover went nuts with excitement. She was probably worried that he was dumping her. They had not really been apart since he got her.
When he called, it seemed that Carson had taken care of all the utilities for him. He called and arranged for cable TV and internet service. They could both work him in on Monday. Oh well, not like he spent much time on that stuff anyway.
Wayne cleaned the kitchen up enough to use that night and cooked a steak and baked a potato.
His new coffee pot worked well and he was content.
They spent the rest of the evening wandering around the house checking things out. Taking his coffee out to the screened porch he sat down and Rover curled up on a small rug.
I have not felt this much peace in a very long time he thought as he dozed off in the chair.
Rover woke him up about 5 AM needing to go outside. Wow, he thought, I must have really been exhausted.
He let Rover out and popped in a k-cup for a fresh coffee. Stretching, he thought well I need to plan out the day I guess.
Lets see, cleaners will be here. I need to fix the doggy door, check out the house more. Guess we will wing it after that.
After a quick breakfast of cereal and setting out bowls of food and water for Rover, Wayne decided to do the doggy door. He did not have many tools so he decided to check out Uncle Mike's tools in the garage. Flipping on the lights, he was pleased to see much of what he would need. His uncle had a lot of tools and Wayne would play in here when he was little, watching his uncle work on something. Other than dust everything looked good.
He found a jig saw, screwdriver set, hammer, tape measure, drill and bits, and a small level. He took everything to the kitchen and removed the door. He placed the doggy door frame on the door where he wanted it and drew a line on the door. He then drilled a hole to start the jig saw with. It only took a few minutes to make the hole. He then found out his hole was a little too small, so he trimmed it with the saw. Inserting the doggy door frame, he drilled through the screw holes it had all the way through the door. Then all he had to do was insert the rear of the doggy door frame and screw it all together.
He hung the kitchen door back in place and was pleased with it.
Damn he thought, I need to calk that thing for weather.
He took all the tools back out to the garage and found a caulk gun and a lot of caulk tubes. In no time at all the door was complete. Rover had sat there in the floor watching him the whole time. So Wayne closed the door from outside leaving Rover in.
Rover, where are you called Wayne.
Rover whined a little, so Wayne called him. Come on Rover, outside!
Rover whined some more but poked his head through the door. Once he saw Wayne he came right on out happy and wagging his tail.
Petting him, Wayne said good boy buddy. Now you can go in and out when you want. After saying that he realized he needed to check the rest of the fence around the property. He did not want Rover getting out and lost.
As he was in thought, he heard the ringing from the front gate.
Can I help you he asked.
We are here to clean.
Oh yes, come on in, he said as he opened the gate.
I am Wayne. I just moved in so am still trying to figure out what I am doing. It helps a lot that you worked here for my aunt.
I am Connie, this is Aimee. Yes, your aunt had us out here once a week. Your aunt was friends with our mothers and started us here way back when. We dust through everything, clean floors, walls, whatever. If you need anything in particular done, just let us know.
Thank you, just go do your regular cleaning. You ladies are saving me here.
The ladies got busy and he noticed that they seemed to know what they were doing.
Just then Rover jumped through the doggy door and startled them. He sniffed a little and wagged his tail and then went to a rug for a nap.
It seems he likes you said Wayne.
So this is the master of the house said Connie, smiling.
I guess so.
Now, Mr. Dupre, let us get busy, you are in the way now.
Smiling Wayne said yes, ma'am.
Wayne started wandering the house, keeping out of the ladies way. He found the library and was amazed at the books. Looking at the shelves he saw classics, some really old books, and some newer ones.
Wayne went to the desk, looking through notes and old bills. He then realized one drawer was locked.
Trying the different keys, he found one that worked and looked inside.
Wow, That must be the journal his aunt mentioned.
Rover wandered in and curled up under the desk to nap.
Wow he thought, this is mine now. A lot of books in here. He never expected this turn of events.
And I have a dog now. Ha-ha
Opening the journal, he started.
Wayne started skimming, but had to slow down. The writing at times was difficult and the subject was harder.
May 1, 1865
Darn rebels are almost here. We don't hold with the Yankees, but the fact that Janice is black makes us fair game though. Not sure how they found out. She is light skinned enough and passed. Maybe somehow they found out about the tunnels underneath and the blacks we have hiden there in the past few years. Janice had everything stacked in the tunnels just in case. Smart woman to plan ahead. Now we wait down here just like the others we have tried to save. No idea, but hoping they don't know of the tunnels. We got word yesterday that we were going to be burned out. Janice had everything sorted and we moved on down here.
We had heard the war was over, but not too sure. Joke on me......wasnt rebels Yanks burnd us out. Not easy surivin down here. I think they burnd everyone out.
The war took a toll on us all. Damn yankees and damn confederates both. Glad mom and daddy are gone. I would hate for them to have to deal with this.
January 1867
Decided to add a little. The last two years have been bad. I still live here in the tunnels. Janice passed last year. She was really sick. Stayed drunk for a bit but got mad enough to pay some people back. The mayor and the sheriff were the ones that directed the yankees to us. I arranged a little trap for the mayor. Caght his nephew out in the woods with a young lady. Let her go. Wanted them to come lookin for me.
The nephew is in one of the rooms right now. I am just waiting for a chance to get the others.
That was almost too easy. Got mayor Hodes and the sheriff with no trouble. Just marched them into the burnt out house and down into the tunnels. They in there now.
The sheriff wouldnt talk but the mayor told me all I needed.
Sorry about the nephew but he knows where he is and will talk. The mayor and sheriff lives are sealed.
Well that is done. Killd them all and pushed them off into the river.
Seems they wernt alone in their lies. The bank and others in town lied to the yanks about us. They figured if they gave them someone to go after the yanks would leave them alone.
Well it worked for them. But I am still here and mad.
Took some figurin. The banker was a bit of a drinker. I spent some time watchin his house. Him and his wife had an argument of some kind. She was yelling at him to beat the band and made him go sober up. When he left I was thinkin he was goin to Collins widows farm. Fell off his horse he was so drunk. I convinced him to help me get some money from the bank. Then left him in the safe. He wont talk.
I was kind of worried of getting caught cause there was more in the safe than I figured and I had to have the bankers horse to get what I wanted. It took more time. Almost bust out laughing when I saw confederate markings on the chest of gold.
Got it done. Horses are gone and the money is here in the tunnels. Not much money but a lot of gold and silver.
September 1910
Well, this is Reuben. Daddy is pretty sick and wanted me to add to this. I know about all this but it has always been daddys business, not mine. I suppose that has changed.
Daddy remarried in 1870 to my mother Annie Phillips. I was born in 1885.
He built a house for us on top of what was an older house. He said the yankees burned him out after the war.
I had to promise that our history would be kept just for us and not let anyone else know, not even the preacher. Easy to promise that, our preacher is not what you would call Godly.
I see where he got the money for all this. At first I was a little upset about it but decided that the town owed our family for what happened.
November 1911
I could not bring myself to add to this last year. The sickness took father and mother both. It also took many from the surrounding area. They said it was the flu. I never caught it. I did have an accident and lost my right leg. Darn wagon turned over when the horses spooked. I seem to be getting on though. Tough getting up and down these stairs though. Made me a rope pulley so I could get up and down them. My arms are strong so it seems to work good enough. I have been buying property around here. I think I got about 400 acres now. All of the tunnels are under property I own now except for a little under the town. The old funeral home closed down. They could not afford to keep it going.
1920
Met a Margaret Bivins at church yesterday. She is a widow. Seems her husband passed in the great war. Army did not want me since I was missing a leg. Her aunt introduced us.
Got married a few months ago. Margaret is an amazing woman and has become the light of my life. I finally showed her the tunnels. She is amazed and said we should store food and needful things down here.
1929 Margaret was right. Seems everything has fallen apart. No jobs and the banks have stole most everything. Good thing we kept our bank down here. She has been canning and storing food down here too. We are getting by.
July 1930
I have a son! Named him Mike. A strong looking boy with a yell to match.
1945
This is Margaret. Reuben is gone from a heart attack. The last few years he has been very busy. I could see that he was getting tired easier. Not sure what I will do without him. As soon as Mike is old enough I will turn this all over to him.
March 1954
Mom has joined dad. She really missed dad and was sad the last few years. At least now they are together again. They are in our family place with everyone else.
I am kind of lonely and miserable. That will work itself out though.
She showed me this place a few years ago. It is our family secret and she said it has saved this family more times than she could probably count.
I got drafted a while back into the army. Korea was a nasty place and cold. I got home with all my parts though and got out of the army in 1952.
1955
Found me a job doing construction. It is hard work but better than Korea. Most of my friends there are veterans also. Ben Rodgers and I drink together sometimes. He introduced me to his sister Margrethe. She is a beauty and so nice.
I decided to add my ideas to the family shelter. The threat of atomic bombs is a big thing now. It is a good place to make into a large bomb shelter. My construction training helps a lot.
I seem to have a lot of cousins and other relatives. Most of them are bums. They continually keep after me to let them move in. Not happening.
1956
Married? Me? Cannot believe that woman actually agreed to marry me. She is strong willed and opinionated. That works real well for me.
The only thing wrong is her sister. She is a wandering sort and I heard some rumors.
1960
We got the shelter finished. From the news, we might be just in time. I sealed up the tunnel to the funeral home. There is a new concrete wall on this side of the funeral home wall. It also has a layer of rock and dirt in addition. I did not want anyone to find their way in by accident. It can all be moved if needed though, from our side.
We are a little sad. For some reason we cannot seem to get any kids. No idea why. Margrethe's sister though seems to have no problems with that. She runs around a lot and is free with her lifestyle. Good or bad, the babies never seem to go full term.
1970
Just when you think there are no more surprises. Margrethe's little sister had a baby. She named him Wayne. We are still childless.
Well, that figures. We are taking care of Wayne now. The mother has too many things she wants to do, as she said.
1975
Not much has changed. Wayne has grown a lot and in our minds he is our child.
1980 Margrethe's sister has passed. A very bad car wreck. She was in California when it happened. The only way they knew it was her was because of her purse and license.
The next entry surprised and shocked Wayne. It was directed to him!
June 1985
To Wayne
This is uncle Mike. If you are reading this then I guess me and your aunt are gone now. I wish I could have spent more time with you. We never had any children, we think of you as ours.
You sure are one busy little guy.
This journal tells you everything I have found out about the family. There isn't much though. I think there is another part of the journal somewhere, maybe. If so, I have not found it.
We did some building down here and added a few things. Me and your aunt did it ourselves, so no one knows about it. This is the family secret. We only let people know that would end up with this place. If you get married, do not immediately let her know. Be careful cause crap happens. In the library, you will see a copy of War and Peace. Pull that out and think of your birthday. You will see how to get to the tunnels from there. Look through it all carefully. Love you boy.
Wayne, you were the baby I could never have. I loved you since the moment I first saw you.
I suppose that your uncle and I are both gone now. Don't be sad. We have had a great life and you have been a joy.
Now, don't sit here fussing and crying. Check out the house and make it yours.
Love you dear.
After finishing, Wayne sat there with tears in his eyes. I wish I had spent more time with them, he thought.
After locking the drawer with the journal in it, he turned around to leave the room.
Stopping he looked over to the book case for War and Peace.
Gonna need a step stool or something to reach that.
Scooting the desk chair over he climbed up and pulled out War and Peace, having no idea what to expect.
What Wayne found was a numeric panel.
What the hell?
Wayne figured he would wait until the ladies were gone and he could check this out privately so he put the book back in place. And got down.
Wayne heard honking in the front of the house.
Wayne went to the front door. There was a car at the gate and two people arguing while they stood there.
He could clearly hear them arguing about money and something about the bastard she left everything to. Then he saw why he could hear them so clearly. There was a small video screen and speaker left of the door.
Interesting he thought, so I am the bastard.
Hello, he asked. No response.
Wayne pushed a button on the speaker and said what do you want?
That seem to have worked. The couple stopped arguing.
Answering him, they responded with a smile. Sorry to bother you. I am Melissa and this is Dennis. The lady that lived here was an aunt of mine. May we come in?
I just got here and am not really interested in company. How about we arrange a meeting in town somewhere? I like pizza.
Look you little shit, said Dennis, let us in. We need to discuss what happened with the will!
Past being nice, Wayne responded.
Alright Dennis, it is like this. I live here. You are not welcome and the bastard is staying. Now get lost before I call the police.
Melissa said, he heard you dumb ass! You called him a bastard.
They got in their car and sat there arguing. A few minutes later they left.
Not sure what to do, he called Leonard.
“Mr. Carson, I just had a visit from someone named Melissa and Dennis. They kind of demanded that I talk with them, after calling me a bastard”.
You did not let them in did you?
No, I do not respond well to that kind of attitude and told them to get lost.
Laughing, Leonard told him they had been a thorn in his side since his aunt passed.
“Tell you what, I am going to file a restraining order on them. That way if you call the police, they will be in violation, if they come back”.
“I like that idea, thanks Leonard”. Let me know when you want to go eat.
Will do Wayne. Talk to you later.
So I have asshole relatives that already do not like me, thought Wayne.
He turned around and found Sheila there.
I am sorry to eavesdrop, was that Melissa and Dennis Hardy at the gate?
Yes, do you know them?
Shaking her head, Sheila said that his Aunt had no use for them. They were always trying to wheedle money out of her.
Your aunt once told me that they would not even make good compost.
Wayne started laughing, that is the impression I got also.
Well, I guess you will do, said Sheila before she turned around to go back to work.
No other surprised that he could find in the house, Wayne checked all the plumbing for leaks and to insure the water worked. Other than some noise from the unused sinks when first turned on everything seemed to be ok.
After the ladies left, he fixed up some lunch. He had bought a baked chicken from Walmart so with that some crackers and sweet tea, he was good.
He checked to make sure the gate was shut and the doors were locked and headed to the library.
He remembered the odd note in the journal telling him to remember his birthday. Inputting 62270 and nothing happened.
Frowning, he thought well maybe... and he tried 062270. A click below him almost made him jump off the chair. Putting the book back in place, he got down and moved the chair out of his way.
A lever had popped out in the middle of the bookcase, so he pulled on it.
A section of the bookshelves pulled open. As it opened, lights came on over a stairway inside.
Hmm, my own Batcave he thought, laughing to himself.
He decided to get the journal and lock it down there also. If someone broke in they might be able to figure it out.
He took the journal with him on his way down the steps. Looking around he was amazed. There were lights down there, a large circuit box, and a small office built into the side of the cave. It seemed to be dry as a bone down there and the layer of dust told him no one had been down there in a long time. He put the journal on the desk and continued down the passageway.
It opened up into a larger cave. It was lit up also. Along one side were the remains of beds, some shelves, empty barrels, and a blackened fire pit in the middle of the room.
There must be a way for air and smoke to leave here he thought. I might need to check that out. On the back side were two more passages but they were not lit up and very dark.
Wayne had no wish to stumble through those places blindly so he turned around to explore what he could see.
A little overwhelmed, he looked at the cave formations. They were beautiful. He would have to look them up though online.
He was about to take some pictures with his smart phone but decided that maybe it would not be wise to have any evidence of this place outside the caves.
I need to get some flashlights and rope before I go through this place, he thought.
Aunt Margrethe was right. I need to check the property out and make it his own. He left, closed up the entryway and wandered through the house again. Although he mostly grew up there, he really had no idea of how it was made up. Well, 6 bedrooms, a drawing room, music room, 4 baths, no showers, mud room, library. A lot of house, he thought.
I like showers, it should not be much of a problem converting one.
The only camera on the property is for the front gate. I think I will change things around a bit.
He walked into the far bedroom that had been his as a kid. Looking around he noticed they had not changed a thing about his room. Then he froze with a memory. He had not thought of it since he had gone out on his own.
He walked over to a portrait of his uncle and pulled on the bottom of it. The portrait did not move, but the wall did. Delighted, he slipped into the passage. In a far corner he stopped at a small wood box. It used to be his “chair” when he was in there as a kid. On the floor was an old cigar box. He picked it up and put it in his lap. Upon opening he found that all his childhood treasures were still there.
Touching each one and absorbing memories of them brought happiness and a smile.
Wayne decided to leave the stuff there since it had been safe all these years. He did pick out one toy soldier, stood him on the cigar box and said “guard”. He saluted and left.
Not knowing how much property around the house was actually fenced, he started at the gate, checking fence, condition of the property, and suddenly thought of security.
The fence was all wraut iron and seemed to be anchored in concrete. Wow, how far does this go he thought. The barn surprised him. He had never been back there and did not know it even existed. Either that or he had forgotten anyway. It needed some work but appeared to be solid. There was some hay, horse stalls, an old tractor, and a bunch of equipment he had no idea of what it was for.
He finished checking the fence and it had already been a long day. Wayne decided to cook up some canned chili he had bought and call it a day.
Rover woke up when he was filling his dish so they sat there and finished their supper.
He then threw out his sleeping bag. He did not want to start making up a bed yet.
Dead silence in the house and Wayne and Rover slept in a little late.
Next morning
“You must have pretty good bladder control Rover, or I never heard you get up.”
He cleaned himself up and dug out some clean clothes. Once he was done he decided on some cereal. It was quick and he had a lot to do.
Rover helped him walk around the house making lists of what he wanted to do inside immediately.
He decided he wanted wireless cameras and replace the one on the gate. It worked but it was old and he wanted a DVR set up to record.
Shower and accessories
16 Camera/DVR system
No trespassing signs
purple paint in case it was needed on the tree line
Drivers license
fishing hunting license
Check concealed carry laws with Leonard
More groceries
Cleaning supplies
**Check fridge
Check the well water
Well, he thought, that should keep me busy for a bit.
10AM, I guess everything should be open by now.
“Good Morning Leonard. Had a question for you. Carrying weapons here, what is legal”?
Hi Wayne. Here you can open carry most anywhere with no license or permit. If you want to go concealed you have to take a course and get the permit. You can carry in your car, that is not considered concealed, and anywhere on your property in any fashion you choose”.
Wow, that is all I needed to know then. Thank you. I am heading over to get some license changes.”
Oh Wayne, I had some people ask questions. I went ahead and told them all you had no intention of selling anything and had moved in. They seemed pleased with that”.
Thanks Leonard, I need to be a good neighbor anyway. Do you know anything about the barn here?
Not much Wayne. They had horses at one time. They got rid of them before your uncle passed. They also had a garden out there somewhere, but I have no idea where.
Thanks Leonard, talk to you later.
By 3PM, Wayne was wasted but he had made a major dent in his list. He was now an official resident.
One last stop he thought. Might as well get a fishing license while I am out. There was a small marina near his house. He figured he might as well meet the neighbors, so to speak. Walking inside he found it interesting, cold beer, food, fishing and hunting equipment; most anything needed in a pinch.
Hi said Wayne, “I need a fishing license”.
I can fix you up. Just need an ID. You a resident or weekender?
I just moved here and changed my license today.
Well, welcome to the neighborhood. I am Jay, that old woman over there is my wife Sheila.
You shut up Jay, she said smiling.
Looking at his license, Jay's eyes opened. Say, you that young feller that took over Margrethe's place?
Yes sir, I am. She was my only family and I decided to move in. I did not have the heart to sell it. I grew up there”.
Sheila got up and squinted at him. You're little Wayne?
Yes ma'am but not too little anymore.
“Oh my Lord! I used to babysit with you! Margrethe and I grew up together!
With tears in her eyes, she said, Margrethe loved you to pieces”. You got time to talk”?
Yes ma'am, this was the last thing on my list today.
Wayne, you want a beer, said Jay?
Thank you I do. I don't drink much but I like a cold beer. So what have you done with yourself Wayne?
I retired from the army and got a college education. Been over the world a few times and visited Margrethe when I could. I was at a loss what to do with myself until all this happened.
Married, children?
Laughing, no Ms. Sheila, I am divorced. She did not like military life.
You in trouble now boy. She going to do her best to set you up.
Hush now Jay, she said with a glint in her eyes.
Jay was pondering, you reckon he might be interested in the Tiger?
I don't know hon. You know anything about boats Wayne?
Not much. The army had me traveling too much to have one.
Wayne, I want to show you tiger, my boat. I am trying to sell it cause I can't get around well enough to actually use it.
They walked out to the docks and Wayne saw Tiger. It was a 16 ft long tiger striped Jon boat.
This is it Wayne. It is solid as a rock. I have used it all over the place. That is a 40 horse Beaver-tail motor, depth and fish finder, trolling motor and foot controls, running lights. I hate to get rid of it but I have not been able to use it much this year. I have trouble getting in and out of it. So if you are in the market for a really good boat , this is the one.
Wow, Jay, that is a beauty! I actually had not thought of buying a boat yet. It had not occurred to me.
If you are interested, I will give you a good deal.
Going back into the office, Wayne was thinking. How much you want Jay?
I was asking 12000, but I will give it to you for 10.
Overhearing that, Sheila jumped in. Jay, now you told me you would take much less than that, and Wayne is practically family.
Embarrassed, Jay said I just trying to make some money Sheila.
Not off this boy, she said.
Ok, what would you offer Wayne.
Sheila jumped in again. I have an idea that might work.
They both looked at her, and Jay was suspicious.
Tell you what Wayne. You give Jay 1000 dollars for the boat and promise to take him fishing a lot in it to get him out of my hair, she said, smiling at both of them.
Jay was about to explode on the 1000 dollar offer, but he suddenly thought how long it had been since he had been able to fish.
“I guess I could teach Wayne about where to go and how to fish properly”, he said slowly.
I don't know about that said Wayne. That is almost giving the boat away.
No, it isn't said Jay. I love that boat and this way I not only get to keep it close, I get to fish in it also. We got a deal here”?
Reluctantly, Wayne said “yes we do captain, I will be your first mate. How do we do the paperwork?
Thats easy. I got the title here and know the people to walk it through. Just sign here and bring me my money when you can. I can do the paperwork without you now.
Wow, thanks! It sure has been a week! I went from a crappy job and an apartment I did not like and now I have a house, a dog, and a boat, and friends.
“When you come back with the money, I will give you the new title paperwork.
Laughing Wayne said, you got deal. He shook Jays hand and hugged Sheila.
Wayne stopped at the door, Jay, do you know if my property goes out to the river?
Yes it does. A good part of it ends up in bluffs overlooking the river and another spot you can walk in to fish, lots of swamp too.
Thanks, just curious.
They watched him go. Sheila said, he is still a good boy Jay”. Yep, and I think he might be better man. Thanks old lady, I will finally get to fish again, said Jay smiling.
Once home, Wayne unloaded and put things away. He hated shopping, but sometimes you had no choice.
This night was different. The cleaning ladies had aired out his old room and even cleaned it.
He was going to replace the bed, but putting down new sheets tonight would work just fine.
As he dozed off, he felt Rover climb into bed and stretch out beside him.
The next morning he went outside to sit on the porch with some coffee. Watching Rover trying to convince the squirrels that he was the boss and pondering what to do that day.
He still did not have a camera system set up or the shower done. He decided to fix the shower first. He needed one bad.
Then he would deal with the camera system.
He had bought a real quick and simple shower. It connected to the faucet and the head hung on the shower wall. A few minutes later it was done and he proceeded to use it.
Feeling so much better, he went out and put up the no trespassing signs and tried to decide where to put cameras. He then realized he did not buy the camera system yet either.
Sighing, well another trip to town. Wonder what else I need?
Just for the hell of it, he went over to the marina. After greetings were done, he said,
I have to go to town this morning. I wondered if you all needed something.
I do have a list if you don't mind Wayne.
Not at all, going to have to go there anyway.
Jay, why don't you go with Wayne? You have not been anywhere in weeks.
Hmm, do you want company Wayne?
Sure Jay, you can tell me about the town while we hang out.
They left for town, jabbering like old friends along the way.
I'm going to town to get a camera system and DVR setup.
Whats that Wayne?
A bunch of cameras around the property and a recording device that captures anything it sees, for security.
Thats a good idea. I had no idea, I am not too technical these days.
No one is really Jay, it changes too fast to keep up, it seems like.
Sheila has been making barbecue noises for this weekend. I see some stuff on her list for that. You free to come over?
I cannot turn down barbecue Jay, of course I will be there.
Warning though Wayne, I know my wife. She has probably invited some single ladies, if you know what I mean.
Don't think I am ready for that, but thanks for the heads up Jay.
You want to fish tomorrow Jay?
Anytime, day or night, just yell.
Ok then, what is a good time?
Lets head out at dawn. We should be done in a few hours and have plenty of fish.
Sounds good.
He was going to Harbor Freight, but at the last minute pulled into a Sam's club.
Wayne had a membership, but had rarely used it.
Inside he found what he was looking for. The whole set, 16 cameras, wireless, a DVR with a 1 terabyte hard drive. It had what he wanted.
Hmm, I think I will come back here with Jay. I see a few more things I want. So he left and went back to check on Jay.
Jay was still busy going through the list, mumbling about women and their lists.
You get it?
No, going back over there after we leave here. I found what I want but decided I wanted a few other things also.
Finally done with the list they headed to checkout. Wayne went out and got the truck, pulled up front to make it easier, and got out to help.
Thanks Wayne. Can you imagine how long a shopping trip this would have been with Sheila?
Laughing, I feel your pain Jay, women are often like that. They loaded up and headed for Sam's.
They pulled into Sam's club and got a cart.
I decided that since I am here, to stock a little bit.
Sounds good to me, we need another basket? Said Jay.
Maybe, lets see.
An hour later and two carts, Wayne said, I guess I am really stocked up now. I really did not have much in the house.
They had just loaded up the truck when a van pulled up beside them.
A guy got out and walked over. Mr. Dupre, I am Brian Jessup. I would like to talk about your property.
Cutting him off, Wayne said, no deal, nothing is for sale or lease. Not interested.
Frowning, the guy said, I really want...
No, I am sure you understand that word? NO
At that, Wayne got in the truck and they headed for home.
That man is a snake Wayne. He is a developer that has been trying to get his hooks into that property for a while. Your aunt told him she would shoot him if he came back.
Good idea Jay, I will keep that option open.
On the way back, Jay put a note on the console. That is a phone number for a friend of mine. He does the classes for concealed carry. He is fair and fast.
Thanks Jay, I will call him. I want to be able to carry.
You mean like this, said Jay, raising his jacket.
Laughing, good job Jay, I had no idea you were armed.
At my age I am too old for a fist fight.
Say Jay, what are the local law enforcement like? Are they trustworthy or hard to deal with?
Right to the chase eh boy? Well Wayne, the sheriff is a good guy and some of his deputies are. A couple of them are not.
If you run into a guy named Coonrod, be careful with him.
Coonrod? Really?
After they unloaded at Jay's, Wayne told him bye and he would see him early in the morning
Wayne was up early the next morning. He was excited, not having fished in a long time and able to check out his new boat.
After a quick breakfast and making sure Rover had what he needed, Wayne drove on over to the marina.
Good morning Sheila.
Smiling, Sheila said it is really good to see you. I got coffee and Jay is finishing breakfast.
After greeting Jay and sliding into a chair, Sheila brought him a cup of coffee.
You ready, asked Jay
I sure am. I have not fished in years! If I was more excited they would have to drug me down.
That makes two of us. I have not been out in a while and have surely missed it.
Now, you boys keep out of trouble and bring me some fish to cook.
Yes ma'am, smiled Wayne.
By noon, they had a few fish but had spent most of the morning cruising around. Jay showed him places that were good to fish and how to run the boat. Wayne was having a great time.
Jay pulled up under some bluffs.
Your property line comes out above us here on those bluffs. Around the curve here is a good place to bank fish and set out some lines overnight. It's also a good place to camp. Me and your uncle spent a few nights there fishing and drinking said Jay.
Down over here, see that fence line up in the trees, that is your property line.
I see, wow, I had no idea.
That evening, they feasted on fried catfish, corn on the cob, and steak fries.
Stuffed and tired, Wayne went home, A quick shower and bed.
6AM found Wayne and Rover sitting in the screened porch drinking coffee and a treat for Rover. Kind of a payback for Wayne being gone most of yesterday.
He had two things to get in town, so this morning should not be a problem. He wanted a new mattress set for the bed and he wanted to check out a utility vehicle for use around the property.
By 9, he was in town at a Polaris dealership. He quickly found what he wanted. It had four seats plus a bed on the back of it for hauling stuff. When he realized that the bed would tilt and dump he was sold.
It was pricey, but he figured since he had the money, whatever. He arranged to have it delivered with a full tank of gas at noon, so he was set to go. Next stop was a furniture store. He wanted a box spring and mattress. It took him a little bit to find one he actually liked. His preference was a mattress that was a little on the hard side, not soft.
They would deliver it on Monday morning.
Stopping at a liquor store he bought two cases of Lone-star beer, imported from Texas and headed home.
He figured the people with the 4 wheeler would be late, but they only missed it by 5 minutes, so he was not bothered by that at all.
It was a pretty machine, camouflaged on the outside, automatic transmission with a low gear for hauling or pulling.
As he started it up, Rover jumped into the passenger seat and they were off. His property appeared to be cleared pretty much, other than needing cleaned up some. He could drive around most of his fenced in area with no problem. He made a note of a couple of areas he needed to work on.
Although the back fencing was 6 foot fence instead of wraut iron, it was in good shape.
He did find a gate with a padlock on it, but he had left the extra keys in the house. Wayne figured he would try it out later.
Well Rover, I guess I better go clean up and get ready for that barbecue.
After parking the 4 wheeler in the garage, he stepped back, satisfied with his purchase.
They went inside, him to clean up and Rover for a nap.
Once done, he loaded the cooler, he headed off for the food.
There were a lot more people at the barbecue than Wayne expected. As he got out of his vehicle, Jay came over and grabbed him.
I might as well introduce you around Wayne.
Yeah, I don't know anyone here hardly. Wayne got a beer and they wandered from group to group. A lot of people were wanting to meet the new guy in the neighborhood.
Most everyone was friendly and open. There were a few though that did not seem happy.
What's with those guys Jay? They look like they swallowed poison.
The fat one is Coonrod, a deputy. The other two are actually cousins of yours. They are not happy with the will.
Oh, I see.
Hey Jay, who's your friend here/
Hi Sheriff. This is Wayne Dupre, Margrethe's boy.
Glad to meet you son. I am real sorry about Margrethe. She was a special lady. When I was a kid, I got my share of a whoopin from her spoon.
HAHA, you did? I figured I was the only one that knew about that spoon.
Nope, she looked after us sometimes and would take no crap.
Say, Mr. Dupre, I am going to be blunt about this and no offense. I don't like problems. Are you a problem? Drugs, booze, parties...
Hell no sheriff, I probably like trouble less than you do. No drugs or parties, I do like a cold beer sometimes.
Now Lonnie, you just better back off of Wayne here. He is a good young man that can be counted on. Don't make me yell for Sheila.
Sorry Jay, I just wanted to throw that out there. Actually, I already checked you out and you are clear Mr. Dupre.
Just call me Wayne sheriff, and no hard feelings at all.
By the way Wayne, you can call me Lonnie when we are out like this. If you need anything, just call the office. I seem to spend my life there anyway.
Thanks Lonnie, I will remember that.
Jay, Wayne, see you later.
Is he always like that Jay?
Only to new people in the area. He is a little rough around the edges, but he means good.
That's good, I don't need trouble.
Hi Wayne, said Sheila. I have some people for you to meet, please.
Wayne, you are in trouble now. She is going to present you as the bachelor the girls need to chase. That is what women do when they see a single man.
You just shut up Jay, I am just going to introduce him to some friends.
Of course Ms. Shiela, whatever you like, said Wayne.
This is Mr. and Mrs. Simpson and their daughter Rachel. This is our new old friend Wayne Dupre. He recently got out of the army and is going to stay here.
Nice to meet you all said Wayne.
You have work yet, asked Mr. Simpson
No sir, I have not even had a chance to look yet, but you can bet I will.
Glad to hear that young man.
Just call me Wayne please.
Wayne, asked Mrs. Simpson, you pretty much grew up here didn't you?
I did, ma'am, and then joined the army.
Did you retire?
Yes I did 20 years and they were starting to cut back so I decided to just retire.
Rachel here teaches at the elementary school.
I am always impressed with smart women said Wayne. I cannot imagine how hard teaching is.
Rachel turned a bit red and said with practice it all comes pretty easy.
Shiela grabbed his arm, we need to mingle a little bit.
Nice to meet you all said Wayne, as Shiela drug him off.
That was a little embarrassing said Wayne.
Sorry about that Wayne, tell you what. Lets go over to this group and I will introduce you to all at once. If they want to talk, they will come to you.
Grimacing, ok Shiela. Be prepared to rescue me.
It looked to be about 20 people standing around the fire.
Hey all, this here is Wayne Dupre. He is our new neighbor. Now, it is up to you all to introduce yourself to Wayne.
That worked better, but Wayne was wore out after about an hour.
Filling a plate with heaps of food, Wayne went over to Jay and some of the older men.
Can I join you all? I need to get away from all that.
Laughing at him, they responded
You sure can, this is a safe place. The women won't bother you here.
Wayne sat down to eat and listen to them talk.
One of them asked, what kind of skill you have Wayne? Farming, engines?
No sir, none of that. I am good at tinkering and electronics, but know nothing of the real world.
Well, you say you know nothing, but with the way the country is going we may have need of your skills yet.
I have not paid any attention to the news in quite a while. Been too busy working.
They count on that I think. Workers actually working for a living, what an idea? Haha
Really Wayne, you need to check the news. Things are changing fast and not in a good way.
I will sir, soon as I get a moment to sit and relax.
You have been pretty busy the last couple of weeks. Sure am glad you aren't selling out. The damn developers would destroy us.
Jay, who is that over with Mr. and Mrs. Simpson.
Haha, That is Connie Bradshaw. A good looker if I say so. She irritates the ladies in the area with her ways and attitude.
How so?
She is an independent girl, willing to listen to reason, but has her own ideas. Thing is, she is a trucker and the ladies here abouts don't look on that as a job for ladies.
Seems kind of judgmental.
It is, the ladies think she should be chasing a husband and settling down instead of her work.
HEHE, lets upset the ladies.
Wayne looked on while Jay yelled at Connie.
Connie, come here. I got a new guy for you to meet.
Dammit Jay!
Connie came wandering on smiling at the look on Wayne's face.
Did Jay just embarrass you, she said smiling.
He certainly did.
Well, I am Connie. I have known Jay and Shiela all my life, your mom too. I am sorry to hear about your mom passing.
Thank you Connie. She was all I had left of real family.
What made you decide to come here Wayne?
Well, I had a job in the city that I hated, lived in a small apartment that cost too much and I also hated. I kept too busy for any kind of social life. I kind of grew up here so this is actually what I think of as my hometown.
So, when all this happened, I decided to pull up stakes and start over.
I think you will like it here. For the most part everyone leaves each other alone.
Peace and quiet sure s a nice change. Before, I had a major freeway going past my apartment. It was always busy.
I have always loved this place. I do trucking. Normally short hauls, but sometimes longer trips. It all depends on what they offer. I get to see as much of the country as I like, but I always come home.
I gotta go, nice to meet you Wayne.
Glad to meet you too Connie.
Jay, you are one devious old man. Thank you
I see the women getting all up in arms about what I did Wayne. I will get an earful tonight. Haha
Yep, here comes Imelda. She is the mayors wife.
Really?
Hello Imelda you having a nice visit?
Don't you hello me. You know what I think of that woman!
Now, you know that is not fair. She is a smart girl used to doing things her way and she seems to be good at it. She don't want to act the way you think she should.
At that, Imelda turned around and went to her lady friends.
Sorry Wayne, they can get a bit uppity sometimes.
Wow, I had no idea. The mayors wife huh? I guess I won't be spending much time with them. haha
I think I am just going home Jay. It is late enough anyway. Just need to say bye to Shiela, then I will head out.
Thanks for a good time Jay. See you later.
Hey Shiela, I am heading home. It has been a long day for me.
I hope you are not upset with Imelda.
No, I am surprised but not upset. See you later, goodnight ladies.
As he left, the guy called Coonrod intercepted his path. “You need to keep out of trouble and way from Connie”.
Well Coonrod, I don't look for trouble, but have no problem dealing with it. As for my friends, I will pick them.” At that Wayne walked off.
Coonrod was used to getting his way and was immediately pissed off.
“One moment Mr. Dupre, I think I need to search your car”.
Surprised, Wayne said, “Sure you can, as long as you have a warrant”.
Yelling, Coonrod said “I don't need a warrant”!
The sheriff interrupted. What is going on deputy?
My suspect here told me to get a warrant if I want to search his vehicle.
Sighing, the sheriff said, Coonrod, yes you have to get a warrant and you have to have cause.” What do you think Mr. Dupre is guilty of?
Turning red, Coonrod stomped off.
Sheriff, I don't know what set him off, and I do not want any trouble from anyone. You better tell that clown to leave me alone though.
Frowning at Wayne, the sheriff said I think there is going to be a problem. I will talk to him.
Once in the house Wayne and Rover kicked back on the couch. Good thing you didn't have to deal with that crap Rover.
Rover just smiled.
The next morning as he let Rover out a strange car pulled up to the gate. Connie got out of the car.
Can I come in?
Surprised, Wayne said sure and opened it.
I heard about the argument after I left last night. I hope it wasn't too bad.
Not really bad Connie, just kind of surprised me is all. I don't think I will be hanging out at the mayor's house or with Coonrod though. Haha
Would you like some coffee? I got a pot inside here?
I sure would, thank you. I see you have been doing some work around here.
Yes, the house seems to be in good shape but I need to clean the grounds a bit more, or hire someone.
I know a guy that is dependable and cheap if you want to hire someone. He is my cousin and does landscaping.
Hmm, maybe I should actually do that. It would go quicker. Leave me his number, I think I will talk to him.
You offered coffee?
Oh yeah, sorry, I got sidetracked.
Sitting on the porch watching Rover, they drank their coffee and made small talk.
Rover sidled over to Connie and lay on her feet.
What are you doing Rover?
Hey Connie, you are my first guest here and my dog likes you.
I guess I pass the test then, she said smiling, as she rubbed Rover's belly.
Gonna start a party house, said Connie laughing.
Oh hell no. I just realized you were the first one to actually come here for a visit and coffee.
You will find me to be a little more on the private side.
That suites me too. I don't do well with a lot of people demanding my time or wanting me to do things their way.
Laughing, Wayne said, that's what I heard.
But if you need to get away from it all, come by anytime.
Really, well thank you Wayne. I am just liable to hold you to that. When I am not on the road driving, I live in an apartment in town that is too noisy.
Been there myself Connie, I hate apartment living. But yeah, invite is open.
Well I gotta go do some laundry. I am heading to Kansas City tomorrow.
Oh, ok, well, I am really glad you dropped by. You are much easier to talk to than that bunch last night.
I will be back sooner or later, oh, here is my number, just in case.
Thank you Connie, I will give you a ring so you have my number on your phone.
Bye
Bye
“Wow Rover, what do you think of that”?
Coonrod sat in his police car, drinking some bourbon. He was not happy.
Damn new guy. He better be careful. She don't know it yet, but that is my girl. I need to let her know that, yep.
One more swig of bourbon and he put the car in gear. Coonrod had been keeping track of her off and on and he knew where she lived.
Arriving it was quiet out. It had gotten dusk and he went to her door and knocked.
No answer, he knocked harder. He was met with more silence and started banging on the door. A neighbor poked his head out and asked what was going on.
Coonrod yelled at him that it was police business and to go back inside.
He hit the door harder and yelled at her to open up. Connie had stopped at the top of the stairs, wondering about the yelling and noise. Coonrod did not see her.
Connie sat her laundry on the walkway and snuck downstairs. She had no idea what was going on, but she did not like Coonrod at all.
Out of the corner of his eye, Coonrod saw someone running. It was her! Running for her car!
Stop! Connie, we need to talk!
Leave me alone Coonrod! She got in her car and sped off, leaving Coonrod to run toward the stairs.
Thinking fast, Connie called Wayne.
Wayne! I am scared! Coonrod was at my apartment door yelling and beating on it! Can I come over?
Yes, the gate will be open, hurry! Park in the garage!
After hitting the control for the gate, Wayne grabbed his gun off the table and opened the garage. He had no idea of what was going on, but he was worried.
A few minutes later Connie come screaming into the drive and into his garage. He immediately shut the gate and the door to the garage.
What happened Connie?
I don't know. I was doing laundry and he arrived and was beating on my door and yelling! He said we needed to talk.
I have never liked him, he is creepy!
Going around back, they went into the house and locked up.
Sure enough, Coonrod came cruising by slowly just then, and stopped at the gate.
Mr. Dupre? He said clicking the speaker.
Can I help you officer?
Yes, I need access to your property. I am in pursuit of a suspect.
I am sorry officer, you will need a warrant first.
Listen you fucking moron. I am an officer of the law! Open the gate or I will arrest you for impeding an investigation!!
Sorry Coonrod, not happening.
I am sorry to bring you trouble Wayne. I think I need to call the sheriff.
Yeah, might be best. Don't worry about trouble. That is not an issue.
Hello, sheriff Maybre, I got a problem with Coonrod.
What the hell. What is going on?
I don't know. He was beating on my door really hard and yelling, so I ran for my car and got out of there. He said we had some things to discuss.
Have you and him..
Never! I cannot stand him.
Where are you now?
I am over at Wayne Dupre's house. The gate is locked and my car is in his garage. Coonrod is at the gate screaming and threatening Wayne.
Oh hell, I can see this is going to be a royal pain in the ass.
Can you stay there?
Yes she can sheriff, as long as it takes.
I asked you if you were going to be a problem and here you are.
Nope, the problem is Coonrod, not me.
Ok, both of you stay there while I try to stop that fool.
Oh, are you armed Mr. Dupre?
Yes I am. I have a Desert Eagle that I am very proficient with.
Damn, ok, try not to kill him, ok.
I will call you all back.
Shirley, this is the sheriff. Is there anything going on tonight?
Hi sheriff, no, it has been real quiet.
Good, look, it seems that Coonrod has gone off reservation on us.
Call in all the officers to the office. Do not tell them anything, I will be there directly. Do not tell Coonrod anything.
If he calls for anything concerning Wayne Dupre or Connie Bradshaw do not respond or forward any information to any other officers about it.
You understand?
Yes, sir, but what is going on? That is really strange.
Just hold the for till I get there. I am on my way.
It only takes a few minutes for the Sheriff to get there. He beats most of the officers.
Eyes wide, Shirley stars at him.
Coonrod cuts in on the radio...
Shirley, officer needs assistance.
Connie Bradshaw just sideswiped a car and took off. I have chased her down the street. I think she went to Dupre's house, that new guy.
Tell him to hold there, assistance is on the way.
Officers, something has gone wrong with Coonrod today. Earlier he was chasing Connie Bradshaw wanting to talk. She called me a while ago. She wants nothing to do with him and it sounded like he was pretty angry. She has gone to Dupre's house for safety.
We are going to Dupre's and try to deescalate whatever is going on. Ms. Bradshaw is not in trouble, neither is Mr. Dupre. There is no warrant to go to the property and Coonrod is making this all up. I suspect we will have to arrest Coonrod.
Lets go, everyone. Remember, the only trouble we have is Coonrod.
Three cars and six officers pull up at the gate.
Coonrod, what is going on said the sheriff
I think Connie Bradshaw is in there with Wayne Dupre. I was trying to arrest her for hit and run.
Really, well Coonrod, she called me earlier. She was scared of you and said you chased her from her apartment. She wants you to leave her alone.
She is a criminal! And so is Dupre! I am going to..
Do nothing, is what you are going to do.
I hate to do this but I need your badge and your sidearm. One of the officers will drop you off at home. You will not be needing the vehicle.
You can't do that!
Coonrod, you're fired. Don't leave town. The DA may want to talk to you.
You will all pay for this!
Mr. Dupre, may I come in?
“Sure sheriff”, said Wayne, as he opened the gate.
Hi Connie, you ok?
Yes I am now. Thank you for coming so quick.
“If you hadn't”, said Wayne, “he would have gotten himself shot if he had come onto the property”.
“Glad we avoided that Mr. Dupre. It is not over though. Coonrod has some friends and they will pitch a stink about this. Besides, I think he has slipped a little in his mind. You might have to keep an eye out. I can't really do much unless he does something first.”
“I intend to sheriff.”
“So will I”, said Connie.
“Come into the office tomorrow. I will need statements from you both.”
“We will”.
The sheriff left and all of a sudden it was quiet.
“Wayne, I was terrified and had no idea of what to do. Thank you for being here for me. I have a gun, but have never shot at anyone before.”
“I am glad you are armed. Maybe you need some practice with a friend.”
“Please don't take this wrong Connie, but I do have extra bedrooms if you don't want to go home tonight.”
“I don't think that..well, come to think of it. I don't want to go home tonight. I probably would not be able to sleep. Thank you Wayne, I accept.”
I will get some sheets and blankets, the room over there is clean and has it's own bathroom.”
“Do you mind if I go on to bed? I am really exhausted.”
“Not at all. Keep your gun handy, just in case.”
“I will, good night Wayne, and thank you so much.”
They both slept the night through. Rover was curious about his new housemate though.
Wayne got up early as usual and started on some breakfast.
Connie wandered into the kitchen.
“You cook too Wayne?”
“It is either that or starve. Hope you slept well last night.”
“I did, but when I woke up it freaked me out. I did not remember where I was at first.”
“This is delicious. Thanks Wayne.”
“I like food. I was thinking of heading on to town and see the sheriff, he wants statements.”
“Yeah, might as well get it out of the way. At noon I pick up a load. I have to go to Wichita Falls.”
“That is a good trip. How long will you be gone?”
“Just a couple of days. Just going to drop it off and get a room, then come home.”
“Uh, will I see you when you get back? I would like to take you on a real date.”
“Well, mister, I like that idea. Keep my number handy.”
Smiling to himself, Wayne got ready to go see the sheriff.
“Good morning sheriff. You wanted us to come in this morning.”
“Yes I did and thank you for coming early. Fill out this paperwork and write down exactly what you saw and experienced last night..each of you.
“Is Coonrod around?”
“No idea where he is, he disappeared last night, so be careful til we locate him.”
“Damn, I moved here for peace and quiet.”
“Sorry I got you in this Wayne,” said Connie.
“Not your fault, crap just happens.”
“Oh sheriff, what kind of vehicle does Coonrod use?”
“If it still runs, he has a beat up orange Dodge pickup.”
“Orange?”
“Yeah he bought it from an auction from a utility company. Bragged on the good deal he made until it started breaking down.”
“We will keep an eye out them, thanks sheriff.”
“Don't start nothing you two, let us do it.”
“What do you think Connie?”
“I am going to make my trip and then I am coming out to your place for pistol training.”
“I like that, more time I get to spend with you.” Wayne said as he walked to his truck.
Connie just watched him, wondering.
Wayne went home to eat and to rest and think. He was sleeping by 7PM.
Connie loaded up her truck and hauled out. On her way to the drop she had no problems. Other than being tired she was doing well. While collecting her gear for the hotel she saw her pistol. While most companies forbid firearms in the trucks, she was not going to take any chances and took it in with her.
After a shower and food she went straight to sleep.
The next morning, she was almost ready to leave for home when the desk clerk called.
“ma'am, said the lady in a scared voice, your husband is here demanding a key to your room!”
“What!, I am not married! What does he look like?”
“Dark hair, a mustache, fat, a mole on his nose. He says he is a cop and is very angry!”
“Call the police, that guy has been stalking me and he is no cop!”
Dumping out her bag on the bed, she retrieved her handgun and checked it.
Sitting on the side of the bed in a chair, she got ready in case he came through the door. The door was locked already, she had not left the room since the night before.
Connie felt better when she heard sirens coming toward the hotel and started to relax.
Suddenly, someone was beating on the door!
“Connie, come out here, we need to talk!”
It was that asshole
Not saying a word she aimed chest high for him if he came through. He kept on yelling and screaming at her.
Terrified, she decided if she should shoot through the door or not. Before she could decide there was more noise and voices on the other side.
“Put it down sir!”
“I am a policeman, that woman in there needs to talk to me!”
“Sir, put it down and back away”
She heard two shots.
A slight knock on the door...ma'am, this is the police. Would you open up? That man is down and will not harm you.
In a moment of clarity she put her handgun on the bed and moved to the door.
“Is it safe?” Is he gone?”
Yes ma'am, it is safe.”
Connie unlocked the door and backed up.
Are you alright, “ said the officer
“Terrified, but I am ok!”
“Is that him on the floor?”
“Yes ma'am, he had a weapon and would not put it down.”
Ma'am, is that your handgun on the bed?
“Yes, I figured if he got through the door I would empty it.”
“I am going to come in and retrieve the weapon for now. You stay right there, ok?”
“Yes officer, and it is loaded.”
Thank you ma'am.
After taking the handgun, the officer led her out of the room and down to the lounge.
Connie explained who the guy was and what had been going on. She told him to call sheriff Maybre to verify anything he needed.
“Thank you, that will help a lot.”
Things went quickly. Once she gave them her statement and they had contacted the local sheriff, she was free to go.
The original officer walked her to her truck.
“Ma'am, I am real sorry this happened to you. There are a lot of bad people out there. I did not mention your handgun and did not check it in anywhere. You take this back and be safe.”
“Oh thank you officer! I am going home and take some time off to relax.”
“Good for you.”
It was a long drive home. When she arrived at the trucking yard, she found the sheriff and Wayne waiting on her.
When she got out, she fell in Wayne's arms crying.
“I was so scared and so freaked out. He had a gun! They shot him!”
“Connie,” said the sheriff, “he did not make it and will not be a problem for you and Wayne. He was crazy as a loon, we just did not know how crazy before all this.”
“It is all out of your hands, The police shot him outside your room. Technically, you had nothing to do with that part and have no responsibility. You are safe.”
Come on Connie, lets get you home,” said Wayne.
“No, take me to your house please. I don't want to be alone right now. I just want to be safe with someone I trust.”
“You want to leave your car here or ride with me?”
“I will just go with you, now, please?”
“You want some coffee or anything Connie?”
“I would like a stiff drink and then just go to bed, if that's ok.?
“I have some really smooth bourbon here and your bed is all ready. I decided to keep the room up and cleaned it a little earlier, just in case.”
“You are so sweet. I cannot tell you how much that means to me.”
“I don't really drink much. I think that glass might have been a bit much. I better get to bed before I fall down.”
Thats fine Connie. You get comfy. I am going to lock up and read a bit, then go to bed myself. You have a nice sleep.”
“I will here. Thanks Wayne, g'night.”
“Goodnight Connie.”
Smiling to himself, Wayne mixed his own drink and sat down with book.
Wayne sat there trying to read, but his thoughts were on the lady in the other room.
When Connie woke up the next morning, she smelled bacon and coffee. This guy is something she thought.
“Hey bright eyes”, saaid Wayne.
“Good morning Wayne, you trying to spoil me?”
“Why not? You deserve it after your last few days.”
That coffee smells really good right now.”
“Cups are on your left over there.”
After a quick breakfast, they sat on the porch with Rover.
“I really need to get back home this morning. Got a lot of housework and thinking to do. The last few days have been a nightmare!”
“I am here if you ever need me Connie. Here take these. Keys to the gate and the house. If I am not here and you need or want in, feel free.”
“Wayne, are you sure?”
“I trust you and want to see more of you, so yeah, I am very sure.”
Taking the keys, she kissed Wayne on the cheek and left.
“Rover, lets go see Jay and Shiela.”
Locking up, Wayne and Rover drove off.
Wayne! How are you? Are you ok? Shiela asked him as she hugged him.
I'm fine, although the last week has been a rough one.
“We heard about it,” said Jay. “Talk about a rough one.”
“Me and Connie are good, and she went back home this morning.”
Grinning, Shiela said, “back home, so she has been staying at your place?”
uh, not like that. It wasn't safe for her and after...”
Leave him alone, said Jay. You are picking at him.
“He is right Wayne, I was picking a little. Connie is a real sweetheart. If you two are a couple, I don't think either of you could do better.”
“Couple? No, we are just shacking up,” said Wayne wickedly.
Jay started laughing at the look on Shiela's face. “You haven't had someone zing you since Margrethe. He takes after her.”
At the grin on Wayne, she suddenly realized he had got her a good one.
“Men, huh. We got fresh coffee, interesed?”
“Sure am, by the way, I like Connie a lot. I think we may be working toward being a couple.”
“Good, you both need someone,” said Shiela.
“You been watching the news Wayne? Some crazy crap going on.”
“Nope, havent had time lately. What happened?”
“after all the riots on the west coast and all the murders in Chicago, now we have 60,000 illegal aliens marching for our border and not one democrat politician sees anything wrong.
“I can see that with President Bilbo. Not much we can do about it though.”
“Maybe not, but we are ready here. I figure the crap will hit the fan and I am not just going to take it.”
“Ready for what Jay?”
“Well, you are like family, so I will tell you. We are stocked up on food and water for about a year, and plenty of ammo. And I fortified our basement. We are preppers.”
“Really? I never thought much about it. I mostly ignored it.”
“You were in the army. What if your unit was attacked or under seige and you had little food or ammo? You need to stock up boy, just in case. Pay woth cash, leave no paper trail if possible. This goverfnment will roll over you if it thinks it needs to.”
“I gotta go. You have given me some unconfortable thoughts though. I will think it through Jay.”
“Don't wait too long. Once it all starts people will go crazy.”
“See you later.”
Once home, Wayne really was disturbed. He had a tendency to ignore the government, especiallly since he left the army.
While he was checking his email, he did a search for preppers and was shocked at all the info.
Wayne was no dummmy, but he was discovering things he had never considered.
While he was reading Connie called.
How's it going?
A busy day and I am going to bed Wayne, just wanted to hear your voice before I went.
I am glad you called I like hearing yours also. I visited Jay and Shiela today. They called us a couple.
What did you say?
Nervous, Wayne answered. Well, I kind of verified that we were working on it.
I hope that does not upset you Connie, am I moving too fast?
HAHA, Nope, I think you are moving just fine.
I like you a lot Connie.
I like you a lot too Wayne. See me tomorrow?
Yes for sure. Gnite
Grinning into space, Wayne got up and decided to go to bed also.
Nightmares at 2AM. Damn, what the hell.?
Wayne got up. His aunt Margarethe was telling him to stock up for the future and then he was having a nightmare with him and Connie in it and no food available to feed them. He could not get it out of his mind. His aunt and uncle were pretty self sufficient and had stored a lot of food at one time. He could not get it out of his head.
Exhausted he finally fell asleep in the chair.
When Wayne woke up to the smell of coffee he couldn't figure out what was up. Connie walked into the room with a cup for him. You gave me a key, I decided to use it. You sure were sleeping hard in that chair.”
“You are a nice surprise. I had an odd nightmare. My aunt was telling me to stock up, then me and you were togethger starving.”
Laughing, she said “stocking up or prepping for the future. My whole family has prepped as far as I can remember. I even have a storeage area full of preps. To me though, it is just common sense. When times are good you stock for the bad. When times are bad, you are thankful for the prepping.”
“So, I am behind a little bit?”
“A whole lot. I will show you and we can learn more as we go.”
“Sounds like a plan. Damn that coffee sure smells good.”
