They had a couple of beers from the stocked refrigerator until the food arrived. Larry had ordered club sandwiches and a small salad. Once they finished they decided to take a walk until it was time for dinner and the show. Walking up the street, Larry pulled Sherry into a jewelry store. Larry led a protesting Sherry over to a case of rings. "Hush woman." Larry asked the lady attendant if they had a Blue Topaz ring. The lady brought a beautiful ring and Larry held it up to Sherry. "I'm going to buy this for you because it matches your eyes…please." Sherry nodded and Larry slipped the ring on her finger. It fit. Larry paid the bill and they walked out. "You didn't have to do that." "It's not that I didn't have to, I wanted to. Every time I look into your eyes it's like I'm looking into gemstones." Sherry kissed him on the cheek and The two chatted companionably as they walked around until it was time to go back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. "What is this?" Cal asked, looking at the layout on the table. "Armored cameras. I'd like to replace all our cameras with units like this." "Armored against EMP?" "Yep, both natural and nuclear." "Okay, I'll sign off on it. You're going to replace the cameras on the east side of the highway too?" "Yep, and Ryan has opted in to replace the cameras in the industrial area." "Okay, your show." Cal had a meeting with the County Commissioners the next morning. He called ahead and got permission to And the S-70 at the Administration Complex. They hand told him what it was about, just that they wanted to pick his brain. At 10:00 the next morning Ken landed the helicopter at the complex. Cal walked into the meeting and sat down. "Cal, we've been discussing the power needs of the county and want to set something up like you have. We'd like to get your input." "Well, for one, it will be impossible for Grand Junction to replace your power needs with renewable resources. Best you'd have is hydro. Some of the smaller towns might be able to do it, though. You might consider signing people up for conversion and buy the equipment in bulk; it would be cheaper that way. Individual houses could add solar panels and wind generators and possibly sell power back to the utility companies. I had it easier because I started small and gradually added as needed. I recommend hiring an Alternative Energy company for consultation. They could guide you through setting up a plan." "Are you using just solar and wind generation on the Ranch?" "Yes, augmented by smaller hydro and diesel generators to help keep the battery banks charged. Also, all of our power lines ar underground. We've never lost power due to storms and we don't use any commercial power." "Well, I guess we'll start researching Alternative Energy consultants and come up with a plan. Thanks Cal for you input." Ken and Cal were back on the Ranch by lunch. "Do you think they'll make it happen?" Ken asked. "Maybe. If they can push through the political bullshit and bureaucracy, they will be successful, but it will be a long project." When they got back, the beans and salt had come in by transfer truck. Several of the ladies were weighing and packaging the beans in mylar or 5 lb. compostable paper bags and sealing them. Cal pitched in and was labeling the buckets and packing them with the two pound packages. Each label had a bucket number, a list of contents, and the date of packaging. A pallet was laid out outside and as it was filled, Gary took the pallet to Level 3 for inventorying and storage. With the many hands, this took only a few hours. The salt was just transferred to the plastic pails and labeled. Cal got another forklift and was helping Gary move the pallets to level three. As he brought in the last pallet, Siobhan and Martha were there talking to Charlie. "What's up?" Cal asked. Siobhan turned to him. "We're picking up bolts of Gortex and polyester fleece for the sewing class tomorrow. We're making parkas for class."
Cal held up his hands. "Not in my frame of expertise. You need any help carrying anything?" "No, Billy and Becky are helping us move the machines to the Community Center. We'll keep the machines up there in the storage room. Cal watched them moving sewing necessities to the electric carts. He turned and walked over to Charlie's desk. "Charlie, go ahead and double-order the cloth and supplies they are using and replace all the sewing machines." "Cal, you have a C-27 inbound." Mike said over the radio. "Barry, grab a 2 ½ ton and meet me at the airfield." Cal figured that since Larry retired, the shipments would stop coming. When he pulled onto the parking apron the plane was taxiing in. When the engines shut down a man got off and walked towards him. "Hi, I'm Bob Gillum. I took Larry's place." "Cal Coleman. Nice to meet you." "I was told to shut down a project in Central America. Larry mentioned I should drop off any leftovers here." "What do you have?" Cal asked. "Two hundred pair of black Nomex combat coveralls in mixed sizes, fifty encrypted hand-held radios, and about 100 pair of Israeli Army Combat Military Leather Krav Maga Boots. Two pallets."

Gary pulled up and went inside the hangar to get the forklift while Cal started taking off the stake bed sides on the truck. Once the pallets were off-loaded, Gary got two 468L pallets and nets and loaded them on the plane ramp. When the plane took off, Cal turned to Gary.
"Take the pallets back and inventory them. Get in contact with Eric and have him check out the radios."
"Got it Cal."
Later that afternoon Cal's phone rang.
"Cal, Cal Coleman?"
"Yes, this is he."
"Cal, this is Lisa McCormick, now Gaddy."
Cal's heart sank. This could only be bad news.
"Yes Lisa, I remember you from Bragg."
"Cal, Hank has cancer. They don't give him more than a few weeks. He wants to see you."
"Lisa, I'll be there before noon tomorrow."
"I'll text you the address. Cal, he really wants to see you again before…"
"I understand. How are you handling this?"
"I'm all right. My husband is here with me. Thank you for coming."
"Okay Lisa, I'll see you tomorrow."
Lisa ended the call and sat at his desk, thinking. He picked up the phone again and reserved a hotel room in Grove and arranged a rental car from a local business. He then call Matt and asked to use the TBM for the next four days.
"Sure Cal, what's up?"
Cal told him what was going on.
"Of course Cal, take all the time you need. God! Too many are going under these days."
"Thanks Matt. I'll be in touch. I'll be parking at the Grove Regional Airport."
"Okay Cal, my condolences."
Cal got up and found Siobhan and Martha.
"Siobhan, pack a bag. I've got a friend that is dying and he wants to see me."
"Who is it?"
"Hank McCormick."
"That name is familiar….wait! Isn't he the guy I asked about you at the Headquarters?"
"The same. I just talked to his sister. He has a place on Grand Lake O' the Cherokees near Grove, Oklahoma. cancer. They don't give him long."
"How long are we going to be there?"
"Pack for a week, it could be shorter."
Cal landed the plane at 9:50 the next morning. There were no problems getting the plane tied down and the rental agency had their car ready. Before leaving the airport, Cal entered in the address into Mapquest on his phone then called Lisa.
"Lisa? Cale Coleman. We should be there in about 20 minutes. Yes. See you in a bit."
They arrived at a nice house sitting on about two acres right on the lake. They got out and were greeted at the door by Lisa.
"Come on in you guys. You got here quick!"
"We're lucky to have a friend that let us borrow his plane." Siobhan answered.
"Can I get you something to drink?" Lisa asked.
"No, no thank you."
"Well, come on in and see Hank. He just woke up from his morning nap."
Cal and Siobhan followed Lisa down the hall and turned through the door of a bedroom. Hank's eyes brightened when he saw Cal."
"Come on in pardner." Hank weakly said.
Lisa pulled a couple of chairs to the bedside.
"Where do I know you from?" Hank asked Siobhan.
"Cal rescued my band years ago in Iraq. I went to headquarters and you were the one I asked about where I could find him."
Hank smiled. "Well, looks like you finally found him!"
Cal chuckled. "Yes and we have kids to field a baseball team."
Cal's face turned serious. "Hank, Lisa said you have cancer."
"Yeah, two much time hanging around K2, I guess. Well, there's worse ways of dying."
"No way of dying is good." Cal said.
"No, I reckon not. Anyways, I've been hearing how you've been doing out there in Colorado and I need you to do me a couple of favors."
"Just name it, Hank."
"Well, only kin I have left is Lisa and…"
Hank started coughing. Lisa put a straw in a glass of water and gave him a sip."
Hank cleared his throat. "Anyways, I've made more money than all of us could ever spend. Lisa will get all of that. She has no use for the guns I've accumulated over the years and I wanted you to take them. I know they'll be in good hands."
Cal bowed his head for a second. "Sure Hank, I'll take good care of them."

"The second favor I want is for Lisa and Donald to relocate out of Tulsa. Things are getting worse up there. Do you know of any jobs available for them around your area?"
Cal looked over at Lisa. "What do you and Donald do?"
"We run a medical clinic. Donald is a General Practitioner and I'm his nurse, an LPN."
"Well then, there is no problem getting you folded in out there. I would be happy to help them relocate."
"Hank, I'm going to go fix your lunch. Siobhan, let's leave these to old warhorses to talk about old times."
Lisa and Siobhan left.
"Cal, tell me about that place you have out in Colorado."
Cal told him the whole story from when he inherited the property to getting the fire station completed.
"Dang, that sounds like a place I could get to like. You sure you can get Lisa and Donald settled in?"
"Hank, I'll talk to the two of them. If they want to open up a clinic, I'll build them one and outfit it with the latest equipment."
"I wish I could live out my final days in a place like that, but I won't be leaving this bed. I always thought I'd catch a bullet, but I'm not complaining. I've had a good, exciting life. I've lived longer than I ever expected, so death doesn't scare me. I just want my sister taken care of."
"I'll make sure she is Hank."
Lisa came in carrying a tray with a mug of soup and a half of a sandwich on it.
Cal stood up. Lisa, Hank, we're going to go check in to our motel. We'll be back later this afternoon." Hank nodded and took a sip of his soup. Lisa walked out on the porch with them.
"After he eats, he'll fall asleep for about three hours."
"That's fine. We'll come back at 4:00."
"Okay, I'll see ya'll later."
As they were driving to the motel, Siobhan sighed."
"I remember him being a tall, muscled young soldier. It is sad to see him this way."
"Don't feel sorry. He lived the life he wanted to live and is going out still caring for the welfare of his family. He's one hell of a man."
When Lisa met them at the door that afternoon, Donald was standing with her.
Lisa introduced them and got them some iced tea.
"Donald, I'm glad you and Lisa are here together to talk with me. Hank wants you and Lisa out of Tulsa. What are your feelings?"
"Well, crime has been rising and we've been broken into a couple of times." Donald said.
"I don't feel as safe there anymore." Lisa answered."
"Would you two consider moving out to Grand Junction and running a clinic there?"
"I would think they would have plenty of doctors there with the teaching hospital."
Cal nodded. "That's correct, they do, but this is out to the southwest of Grand Junction. There's mostly ranchers and homesteaders living there. I'll provide a new log home for you and build a fully equipped clinic for you. We have a doctor living there but he works in Grand Junction. He's in charge of our emergency medical clinic that you and he can talk about. I'll give you his info. Talk to him and see what he says about the area. It's pretty laid back and quiet. I don't think you'll be disappointed."
Donald looked at Lisa, who nodded to him.
Okay, I'll give him a call."
"When you talk with him. I want you two to get together and talk about the clinic so we can start on the design . Once things calm down, I can come and fly you out to take a look around."
Lisa sighed. "Cal, Hank doesn't want a funeral. He's okay with just being cremated and spreading his ashes on the lake."
"Well, I'd rather remember the Hank in my mind, not what he looks like in that bed."
"I thought as much. If you don't feel like coming out for his Celebration of Life, I'll understand."
Cal sat with Hank for two hours when Hank started to get tired.
"Cal, you head on back to Colorado. She's already contacted a bonded firm to pack the guns and stuff up and ship it out to you. Again, thanks for helping Lisa and Donald out. They are fine people."
Cal walked back out to the living room wiping his eyes. They said their goodbyes and went to a diner to eat dinner.
Before they flew out the next morning, Cal called Ben and told him to be expecting Donald's call. He gave him the short version of what was going on and ask him to think about the design and outfitting of the clinic. Ben said he would be happy to.
When they arrived back to the Ranch, Cal felt drained. He hated even opening the SFA magazine, The Drop, because of seeing the obituaries.

Yellowstone Caldera was acting up. Even worse, in some ways, was the extent of tectonic happenings on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far East Russia. Particularly worrisome was the activity at Ksudach Volcano. The two huge lake filled calderas were both showing significant activity. Were either or both of the calderas to erupt as they had in past history, the damage would be negligible for Asia, but the effects would cross the North Pacific and impact Alaska, Southwestern Canada, and Northwestern states of the USA. Plus, there were the continued series of tectonic events. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions were occurring all over the world. Cal went and talked to Dawn about the output of the greenhouses. He voiced his concerns and they decided to get two more high tunnels and double order the light fixtures and bulbs. Thy made their orders that day. It was only a few weeks until winter and they wanted to be growing by then. "When do you think all of it will take place?" Dawn asked. "Who knows? It could be this week, this month this year or maybe not for 50 years….but we'll be ready as well as we can." The day after Christmas three massive blizzards formed, one in the northeast US, and one along the Canadian border with Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota. The third was barreling down the west side of the Rockies, affecting Idaho, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Colorado. This was going to be BIG.
Snow removal equipment was made ready and staged in the maintenance section and rescue plans gone over. Extra hay was placed for the cattle and horses. Once everyone had checked in and said they were as prepared s they could be, they sat back and waited, watching the news and storm reports.
Cal woke up at 5:00 AM And went to make coffee. He called the Monitoring room and asked for the weather report. Ted Greene was on duty. "Cal, we got two feet so far and still falling. Winds are 45 and gusting. Temperature is 10 degrees. Barometer is still falling." "Okay Ted. Thanks." Cal turned on the coffee maker and turned on the satellite radio to Fox News and went to retrieve his laptop while the coffee was making. He pulled up the NOAA website and checked the national and regional weather maps. This was going to be a doozy. Siobhan came in and poured them both a cup of coffee and sat down next to him. "Anything hot?" "Blizzards. This is going to slow things down a great bit. Grocery stores may run short before this is over." "It's a good thing we got stocked up. How much snow did we get?" "The operative word is 'getting'. Winds are at 45 mph and it's still snowing. Look." "Cal pulled up the weather page on the RanchNET and it showed the weather instrument gauges in real-time." "Burrrrr. I think the kids and I will stay inside today. This is kind of early for this big of a storm, isn't it?" "Yeah, but as you can see on the national map, three polar vortexes hit about the same time. Three fourths of the country will be getting snow." Siobhan got her iPad and was reading the news when Martha came and got herself a cup of coffee." Martha grunted. "I think today would be a good day for some of Cal's Irish Beef Stew and fresh yeast rolls." Cal grunted as his phone rang. "Cal, it's Del. I just wanted you to know I looked at the weather report last night and packed a bag and move to the shelter. I'll be down in the armory." "Del, come on up and get some breakfast. Ring the buzzer and I'll open up for you." A few minutes later Cal opened the blast door for Del. "I stopped by the monitoring room. It's a mess out there." Del said. "Yeah, it's nasty. We might get better than six feet of snow." "That's going to make it difficult to plow won't it?" "Not really, just a little slower. I've got a GPS programed with all the roads. We just install it on the big snow blower and let it lead the way." They let the children sleep as long as they would and went ahead and ate a hearty breakfast. After finishing, Cal and Del went back to the armory to test suppressors. The storm slowed down around 1700 and the wind died down to around 10 kts and gusting. It was too late to begin clearing operations. That would have to wait for the next morning. Cal went to the maintenance section early the next morning. Jon was there prepping the Oshkosh snowblower to begin operations. Cal started prepping one of the ToolCats. "I'll start in the housing areas, Jon. You start clearing to the fire station." They both started their engines and let them warm up. When the engine temps were at operating level, they opened the doors and started clearing. As Cal cleared the streets, more people were able to get out and come help them. Soon the other ToolCat and the tractor mounted snowblower joined Cal in clearing the streets. Jon ran the Oshkosh to Dale and Karen's places, then to the Vet Clinic and on to the Circle B. At lunch everyone was called in to the Community Center for a hot lunch. Except for some shoveling around some of the homes, by 1700 everything was cleared including the General Store, restaurant and areas that side of the road. The equipment was moved back to the maintenance bay for Jon and Barry to run inspections and maintenance.
The Kamchatka calderas, rumbling for months, suddenly erupted in an explosion that rivaled past Huaynaputina and Yellowstone eruptions. Three days later heavy ashfalls began in the Aleutians and southern Alaska, western Canada, and Washington and Oregon states. A vortex coming out of western Canada came right down the east side of the Continental Divide, pulled some of the ash with it. Most of the ash went into the jet stream and began circling the earth, dimming the sunlight. There wasn't much ashfall around Grand Junction, but you could tell some of it was mixed with the snow. Some people found out when they tried to used their windshield wipers to remove the snow. The ash etched their windshields. Cal had been watching the wind patterns and was afraid that was going to happen so he warned everyone to be off the roads before the storm hit. When the snow had finally stopped falling they only had about three feet accumulation. While the snow removal was going on, Harry and Dane brought out the pumper truck and used the 2 ½ inch hose to wash off the windshields. Before moving the machinery into the maintenance bay, all were washed down with a fire hose. No ash was falling although the calderas were still spewing ash it was mostly going straight into the atmosphere. That week another meeting of the Rancher's Association was held. Cal sat and listened as the men and women hashed problems and talked solutions to problems that were raising their heads.
"Cal, what steps can we take to control these climate changes?" "Herb, there is nothing you can do. The climate is going to do what the climate wants to do. It's arrogant and narcissistic to even think you can. Listen, the climate has been changing for millions of years. The usual method man has used to combat the changes is migration. Take drought. Drought is a normal, recurring feature of the climate in most parts of the world. It is among the earliest documented climatic events, present in the Epic of Gilgamesh and tied to the biblical story of Joseph's arrival in and the later Exodus from Ancient Egypt. Hunter-gatherer migrations in 9,500 BC Chile have been linked to the phenomenon, as has the exodus of early humans out of Africa and into the rest of the world around 135,000 years ago. The best we can do is adapt to the changing climate. You are wasting money and emotional energy trying to change it. For a few years now, we've dug cattle tanks where the runoff from our increasing snows can melt into. We are irrigating fields off some of those ponds. The volcanic ash we received didn't hurt our crops at all. We turned it into the soil with a subsoiler and added rotted hay and any organic material we could get. We're getting great crops. There are many ways you can adapt."

Siobhan walked in and sat with Cal in the leather couch.
Yep did that a few times in my younger years.
ncsfgsm,
One's mind eye would generally read in and realize that it is on. This is one of many such occurrences. While proof reading, once you have read a passage twice or more, it says what you think it says instead of what it should say.
Enjoyable story.
Thanks,

Several asked about the greenhouses and Cal gave them the details of their farming methods. Several of the ranchers and homesteaders went away with the intention of getting greenhouses to grow their own food. Larry and Sherry had spent a very intimate weekend end Las Vegas. They quickly decided they were what each had been waiting for and went before the magistrate and tied the knot. She didn't want a big wedding. Just knowing Larry loved here and wanted kids was enough for her. Her biological clock was ticking and Larry was excited about a son or daughter. She sold her condo in the Fruitvale section of Grand Junction and they moved her things out to his house. When the storm came, they had nowhere they needed to be so they just stayed at home. It was just as well, because Larry lacked anything to clear the snow off of the drive. He'd talk to Cal about what he used. On January 6th, Donald and Lisa sold their clinic to a chain and began preparations to move to Colorado. Lisa Skyped with Siobhan and kept her informed about their progress. A few days later, a box truck from a national moving company showed up at the Ranch. The driver of the two-man crew handed Cal a shipping document to check and verify the seal number and that the seal had not been broken before the seal was cut. The were 23 cases of varying sizes and a couple of dozen cases of ammo. Cal called Gary to bring a forklift and two pallets up to the truck. They checked off each sealed box in the shipping document and it was palletized. When the truck was empty, the drivers left. "Gary, inventory the ammo and put it away. I want both you and Del to inventory this pallet, but keep it separate until I see what's there. I may want the weapons to be coded differently." When Cal went back into the house Siobhan was on the phone talking with Lisa. Siobhan put the phone on speaker. "Lisa, Cal is here now. I've got you on speaker." "Hi Cal. I was just telling Siobhan we're leaving here Monday morning and will be getting there sometime Wednesday. We'll keep you updated." "That sounds fine Lisa. I think Siobhan and the ladies have your house ready to move in, but instead of unpacking when you get here, you'll be staying in our guesthouse." Siobhan butted in. "Cal, go find something to do. I'll talk to Lisa about the important stuff." "Yes Ma'am. Lisa I'll see you when you get here. Oh, by the way…the closer you get to here, you're, the more likely you are to pick volcanic dust stirred up by traffic on the highway. I recommend you buying a couple of 2-gallon pump sprayers and filling them with water and Rain-X All Season Windshield Washer Fluid to wash your vehicle windows. If you use your wipers, it will scratch the glass." "Okay Cal, I'll tell Donald. Bye Cal." Cal went and poured a glass of iced tea while Siobhan and Lisa finished their call. "They are towing rental trailers with what they need until their household goods arrive. She's driving Hank's Suburban and Donald is driving their Tahoe." Siobhan relayed. "Is the cabin ready for them?" Cal asked. "As much as we could. We left enough so Lisa can put her touches on her new home." "I'll put an EV34 there for their use in the morning." "Martha and I will fill their pantry with staples and our canned produce. I've set aside meats and eggs for them also. Siobhan said. "Well, if you think of anything, let me know. I'm headed down to see Ryan. He said he had something to show me." When Cal went into the test facility John was backing a ToolCat 5610, with the Hydraulic Dump Cargo Box, off the dynomometer. Cal stopped in surprise. They had converted it to electric! Ryan stood their grinning. "What do you think Cal?" "Where in the hell did you put the battery pack?" "The amazing design abilities of Geoff." "How long can it run without recharging?" "It's averaging out around 36 hours and takes 6 hours to recharge. However, that was just on the static run test. Now, we need some real-time use tests."
"What do you have in mind? "Well, I'd like it used normally around the Ranch daily to do whatever chores it would normally be used for. I'd like to use a dedicated driver to use it for thirty days to do handle anything you can use it for. The would use it every day, plug it in and recharge it at night, and continue using it. I want a full 240 hour test. We purchased a full range of implements for it. Fence post auger, rotary tiller, snowblower, snow v-blade, rotary brush cutter, flail cutter, tine rake, pallet fork, brush, salt/sand spreader, snow pusher, snow blade, grader, bucket, whatever you would use around here. Once we complete the tests, we'll approach Bobcat and see if they are interested. "Sounds like a good plan. Well, somebody's going to be on a full schedule for the next month." "That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Do you think Billy would be interested in doing our tests?" "Yeah, he'll jump at the chance, but, then Becky is going to pitch a fit." "Well then, I'll hire both of them. They can switch off. I'll pay them each $20 an hour. Wait, will it interfere with their school?" "Let me talk to them. They don't have regular hours. I'm sure they will work something out. I'll send them down to you in the morning." "Okay Cal. Thanks." That night after dinner, Cal and Siobhan called Billy and Becky in to the family room to discuss the job. Two sets of eyes brightened with delight. Siobhan asked if it would interfere with their studies. "No Mom, it only takes us a couple of hours a day. We won't have to take our finals for another couple of months. What will we have to do?" "Well. You'll need to go see Ryan in the morning." Cal explained. "He'll give you the specifics of the tests." An excited Billy and Becky headed for the library to research the ToolCat. "Well, that perked them up." Siobhan said. "Yeah, they need the occasional diversion. Ryan may have come up with a pretty good idea. Any company would get a boost having a piece of equipment like that, especially if it really does have that long of usage before recharging." "Thinking out of the box." Siobhan was down at Casey's at 10:30 waiting for Lisa and Donald when they pulled in. She had given Lisa the GPS coordinates because their address didn't show up on GPS. "How was the drive?" Siobhan asked. "Uneventful, thank God!" Lisa replied. "You two come on in and stretch your legs and we'll grab lunch here."

Siobhan led them to the Stammtisch and took seats. Casey came over to greet them.
"Hi Siobhan. What can I get you all?" "Casey, this is Lisa and Donald Gaddy, New members of our community."
"Well Welcome guys, I'm Casey Mason. It's great to have you here. What can I get you?"
Donald ordered coffee and Lisa and Siobhan ordered Earl Grey tea.
"This is a nice place." Donald said.
"Wait until you see the menu. I've tried everything on the menu and love it all, but my favorite is the elk cutlets with mushroom gravy." Siobhan replied.
Casey came back with the coffee and tea and menus.
"Where's Gordon?" Siobhan asked Casey.
"He's at the house doing research on a book idea. What'll you have, Siobhan?"
"I'll have the braised Elk cutlets with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans, and a glass of iced tea."
"I'll have the same." Donald said.
"Might as well make it three." Lisa added.
"Coming right up. Sally will bring your bread out." Casey said.
"How did you fair in the snow storm?" Donald asked.
"As normal. We stayed inside until it quit. The men have snow removal down to a science and all the roads on the Ranch were cleared the next day. We only got three feet this time."
"This time?" Donald said."
"Yes. Just after Christmas we got around six feet." Siobhan smiled.
"Is that normal?"
Siobhan shrugged. "Weather patterns are changing. We adapt and prepare. It just means the county and state are slower getting the roads clear so we make sure we have enough supplies to hold us until we can get back into town. But it's a Catch 22. They know we can fair without them and they take care of everyone else before getting around to clearing our roads."
"Sounds like you are pretty self-sufficient."
"Cal has designed it that way. He knows when things get tough not to depend too much on outside help. We grow most of our own food, we mostly use electric vehicles so fuel isn't a real problem, we can even make our own bio-diesel if needed. We make our own electricity and everyone has an expertise that makes the Ranch what it is."
"Wow! I think we lucked out Lisa."
Sally brought the bread and butter and silverware.
"Cal said something about an emergency clinic on the Ranch." Donald said.
"Yes, but that will have to come later. You have to see it to believe it."
They all took a roll and buttered it and were casually chatting when their meals were served."
"Oh My God! This is delicious!." Lisa exclaimed. "I'll have to try the whole menu….but not today."
When they finished, Casey waved off the bill and Siobhan took them to the guesthouse. Once they parked their vehicles she took them down to their new house and let them look around. When Lisa went inside she immediately went into the planning mode. Siobhan started laughing.
"Settle down Lisa. Rest today and you can go full tilt starting tomorrow. Cal has some things he needs to explain to you."
They went back to the Coleman house and found Cal in the study.
Cal got up when they walked in.
"Glad you made it. Has Siobhan showed you the house."
"Yes, it's wonderful!" Lisa said.
"Great. Now, for the rest of the story. I'll give you the short version first. We've built a community that strives to protect each other. I began this years ago and we've constantly improved it. Donald, you talked to Ben, well he is a member of the community and is my advisor in medical subjects. Let me show you something."
Cal went over to the bookcase and open the hidden panel and the blast door.
"Follow me."
A surprised Lisa and Donald followed him through and down the hall. After making a couple turns, Cal stopped and unlocked a door with a red cross on it. Donald was surprised to find a small medical clinic.
"This is amazing!" Donald exclaimed.
"Ben is a Trauma Surgeon to it's kind of tilted to emergencies." Cal explained.
"How did you do all of this?" Lisa asked.
"That's a long story for another day." Cal said. Basically, what you have here is a survival shelter. We have housing accommodations for everyone in the community in case of just about every disaster you can think of in this area of the country. I'm showing you this because I want you to know I'm serious."

Cal and Siobhan led an amazed couple back to the house and poured them a glass of wine. Martha was in the kitchen getting ready make a Saucy Meatloaf for dinner. Siobhan and Lisa went into the kitchen to talk with Martha, leaving Cal and Donald in the family room.
"How could you afford to do all this Cal?"
"Gold." Cal chuckled. "When I started excavating a cave to enlarge it for storage, I hit a seam of gold that is still producing. I got the idea to make a shelter and it has expanded to what little you see now. I'll take you on a complete tour later. Have you decided on the design of your clinic?"
"As a matter of fact, I brought the building plans of my clinic in Tulsa. I'll pull them out tomorrow." "If you haven't already done so, make a list of the equipment to outfit the clinic. And we'll order it., I'll take you out tomorrow and show you a possible site for the clinic. Also, I'll take you down to a Veterinary Clinic we built for my daughter to see what the builders can do."
After dinner the Gaddy's, after a long day, made it a short evening. Cal and Siobhan walked them over to the guest house and said they could have breakfast when they were ready in the morning.
The next morning Cal was up early drinking coffee and browsing through news sites when Del called him.
"Cal, I've got the inventory for the last shipment."
"Thanks Del. Send me a copy via Intramail."
"On the way…"
A few seconds later he heard the beep of in-coming mail and pulled it up.
"TAC-50A1R2with Night-force 12-42-56mm Mil Dot scope, McCann Night vision rail, illegal Elite Iron suppressor and 12 extra magazines 2 M1A Super Match with Nightforce8-32x56mm Mil Dot scope and A.R.M.S. mounts and throw lever rings 2 M110A1 7.62mm sniper rifle w/ accessories/50 mag. 2 Mossberg 590A1 SPX with aftermarket 15 round sling and sidesaddles 2 ea. "Whoa!" Cal said to himself. "Quite the collector."
Cal called Del back. "Del, have Charlie add the ammo to the ammo inventory and put the guns and accessories in the old gun room. I want them kept separate from normal use."
"Will do, Cal. Quite the collection."
"Yes it is. Hank was a great guy with good tastes."
Siobhan came in and said that Donald and Lisa were there.
"I'll talk to you later Del."
Cal went into the kitchen and greeted the two.
"Sleep well?"
"Like a rock." Lisa said.
"Would you like tea or coffee?" Siobhan offered."
"Coffee for now." Both answered.
Martha came in and started frying bacon while Siobhan began other preps.
"I got a call from the movers. They'll be here tomorrow." Donald announced.
"Good. We've got plenty of people to help you unload."
Martha sat a plate of biscuits on the table and a plate of cheese rounds. Everyone took one and tried the cheese.
"This is delicious!" Lisa exclaimed. "Where do you find this cheese and what is it?"
"We make it here for our consumption. It's a petite breakfast cheese. The lady in charge of our milking operation started making queso fresco and we started experimenting. We also make Colby, Monterey Jack and Mozzarella cheeses. We've got a lot of cheese aging now in wax."
Martha brought out a large bowl of scrambled eggs and a platter of bacon and everyone dug in. As they finished eating the kids started filtering in, so Cal took Donald and Lisa on a tour of the shelter. At the end of an hour, they were amazed.
"How in the world did you come up with this idea?" Lisa asked.
"It started out as preservation for my family. As the Ranch and community grew, I expanded the shelter to include them too. We have enough provisions to last us for years if we don't get supplies from elsewhere."
"Before you show us the proposed clinic site, I'd like to take the plans with us." Donald said.
"Sure." Cal replied. "I'll take you back to the house and I'll get a vehicle while you retrieve the plans. Lisa talked with Siobhan in the kitchen while Donald went to the guesthouse to get the plans. Cal pulled the Command Car out of his underground garage and parked it out front.
Donald came back and laughed. "Where in the world did you find this?"
"It was a gift."
Donald and Lisa climbed in and Cal drove them down to a 1,5 acre plot just north of the Facility gate.
"We can build the clinic here. It's on a state road and easy access of all the people in this area."
"How many people are we talking about?" Lisa asked.
"Around 300 within 10 miles." Cal answered. "Most wouldn't go into town unless completely necessary."
"Cal, I just want you to know, we're not hurting for money. My Mother and Father were doctors. When they were lost in the Bahamas when their boat dunk, I inherited a hell of a lot of money. I can pay for the clinic and equipment if you can offer the land."
"I can't give you the land, but I can lease you the land for a dollar for 100 years."
Donald grinned. "Deal!"
Cal took them to the General Store a hundred yards down the road and introduced them to Logan, who showed them around so they could see what they carried.
"You built this?" Lisa asked.
"Well…yes." Cal replied. I saw People needing things that they went without because they didn't want to make the drive into Grand Junction. A widow, Casey, showed an interest in running a store so I had it built and put her in charge. Ranchers and locals started gathering in the mornings on the store porch just to gab so Casey put in a small coffee shop that also sold pastries. It steam-rolled into building the restaurant. And that's the way it goes."
"Amazing." Donald said.
"Let's go down to the Vet's. I'll show you their building." Cal said.
When they pulled into the parking lot Lisa shouted "That's it! I want the clinic to look something like this!"
They went in and Cal introduced Donald and Lisa to Chipeta, Kathleen and Amanda. Michael and Sabrina were on a ranch call. Kathleen showed them around and explained functions.
When the tour finished, Lisa's eyes were glistening. "I've got some ideas." She said.
"Well, after you get settled, I can get you with the builder and the architect and work with him on the changes you want to make." Cal said.

Cal drove them back and stopped to show them the Church, the airfield, the Community Center and Serenity Garden. When the moving truck was directed to 116 Kenmare Drive, it was liked someone kicked an ant's nest. There were enough strong backs to get everything quickly unloaded. Donald and Lisa were told to do the directing on where to place things. Women unpacked linens and placed pictures for hanging. Kitchens were organized. In no time, the new couple were moved in. Cal took Donald and Lisa out to the cart shed and showed them how to operate the EV34 and how to charge it. Then the new residents were guided back down to the Community Center where the ladies directed the men to burn some hamburgers and hotdogs and salads and desserts were brought out of the refrigerator. The Gaddy couple were amazed at the friendliness of everyone as the came up and introduced themselves. "Oh Cal, the people are wonderful!" Lisa said. "Yes they are good people. We try to take care of each other in all times." Cal replied. "Cal, how are their health care needs taken care of?" Donald asked. "Well, the corporation handles their bonded health care. In the past, Ben has taken care of most of it. Now that you two are here, I propose they go through your clinic and you and Ben can direct them to specialists as needed. Donald, I'm prepared to pay you $125,000 a year and medical bills of the Ranch community will be paid for by the corporation." Donald thought for a minute. "Let me give you a counter-offer. I won't take a salary. I've already told you I don't need the money. I'll take the medical billing, but I want to turn it around and pay for the regular cost of running the clinic and resupply and what is left over, donated to the nursing scholarship you have going." Cal grinned. "Well, that's a deal I can't refuse. Now let me offer a small counter offer. If you can buy your supplies in bulk, then do so. We'll arrange for your computers to be linked into our medical inventory database so you can keep an eye on the inventory levels and reorder as needed. Just for our little clinic, we maintain at least a years supply of inventory on hand." "Yes, it would be cheaper and lower healthcare costs. That's a deal I can live with. So, when do we get to talk to the architect?" "Monday. Rest and get settled in this weekend. I think you'll find the building will go up pretty quick. These guys are good." "Cal, this all seems to good to be true. I'm afraid the other shoe is going to drop." "I understand, but we have no hidden agenda. We're just a group of people who are tired of the 'Status Quo' of what we consider the 'outside world.' We try to do good and look for ways to make things better." "Well, in for a penny, in for a pound. I'll get started ordering equipment. If it gets here before we're ready for installation, is there somewhere we can store it?"
Cal grinned. "I'll take you to meet Charlie and Gary. I think they can alleviate your concerns." When the impromptu celebration was over with Cal had Donald and Lisa followed Siobhan and Cal back to the house in their EV34 and went with Cal on the elevator down to Level 3. "Charlie, where's Gary?" Cal asked. "He's checking tires on 34." "Can you call him up here please?" Charlie called him and told him to come to the desk, ASAP." Gary rode up in an electric cart a minute later. "Charlie, Gary, meet Doctor and Mrs. Gaddy, Lisa. Lisa is Doctor Gaddy's LPN." "Charlie, would you show Dr. Gaddy the medical inventory?" "Sure. First, let me show you how we have it set up on the computer, then I can show you the physical inventory." "Lisa and Donald were impressed with what they saw and said so." "You said you could link us with the medical inventory database?" Donald asked. "Absolutely." "Well, before I start ordering anything, why don't I go over the inventory and pull from your stocks, then replace them with newer inventory?" "Good Idea. Do you have a laptop?" "Yes." I'll have our IT guy, Glen Smith set you up with the software and get you online. He'll get you squared away with a password and show you how to connect to the intranet connection at your house. You also have a internet connection." Charlie handed a card to Donald. "Here Doc. When you order stuff, just have it shipped to this address. We'll handle it from there. Anything you want delivered to you instead of going into inventory, just put 'In Care Of' on the shipping label." "Thanks Charlie. I look forward to working with you and Gary." "Sure thing Doc." As they were going up the elevator Donald chuckled. "She's a feisty thing." "She's pure gold. She's a combat vet, not afraid to get into the thick of things. With her husband Gary, they make a superior supply team." Larry and Sherry watched as the workers from Utah Shelter Systems finished covering the shelter. "Have they finished the electrical?" "Yes. They were just finishing up when the other crew started filling in around the shelter. Ryan is sending over a crew to install the battery bank and separate solar panels and wind generator. I need to start on the shelving and swing-away shelving unit to conceal the blast door for the basement. "I'm glad you got the generator and appliances lifted down into the shelter before they poured the roof. I'd hate to be wrestling with all that through the tunnel."
"Work easy, not hard. We can take the shipping boxes of them tomorrow and start putting them into place." "After we get everything installed I want to go to COSTCO and get staples. Siobhan said we could by frozen and freeze dried vegetables from them.
"I'm buying a steer from Cal to butcher and found a man who will sell me a hog. That , and the vegetables should fill up the freezer. Also, I have a five year supply of long term storage units coming from Emergency Essentials soon." "Anything else we need to do?" "I don't know. I need to talk to Cal. I'm kind of new to this." "Are we going to church Sunday?" "Yeah. Let's make something and take it for the luncheon…better check with Siobhan and make sure this is the correct Sunday."

"Want to take a ride Lisa?" "Sure Siobhan. Where to?" "I need to take some clothes and things over to the Hope Center." Lisa helped Siobhan load some boxes into the Suburban and got in. "What is the Hope Center?" "It's a shelter for women. Homeless, battered, you name it. All have to be willing to better themselves." Siobhan turned onto Hope Road and picked up a moderate speed on the gravel road. "It's here on the Ranch?" "Well, yes and no. The corporation owns the land and we grow hay on it. The previous owners' house burned down and sold out to Cal and he had the Center moved out of town to there. They've already help around 75 woman get a new lease on life. A couple of them are in nursing school on full scholarship." Siobhan drove through the back entrance and parked in front of the main building. "Hey Siobhan, what brings you out?" "Patty, I've got some clothes, pads, tampons and other personal hygiene items." "Great! Let me get a couple of girls to help unload." Patty made a call on the intercom and 3 women came from the day room and helped Siobhan and Lisa bring the boxes in. Patty led them to the supply room where they stacked the boxes on a counter. "Everything going okay?" Siobhan asked. "Pretty good. We got three new women in and the doctor who normally gives the exams is on vacation. Dr. Wiseman said he would try to get someone else." Lisa put her hand on Siobhan's arm. "Donald could do it." "Are you sure?" "Let me give him a call." Lisa stepped to the side to call her husband. "Lisa is an LPN and her husband is a GP. They're going to open up a clinic in the near future. Is the First Aid room available?" "Yes, it should be, but I'll go make sure." Lisa ended her call and walked back over. "Cal is bringing him over." Patty came back. "The room is ready. "Dr. Gaddy should be here in about 15 minutes. Lisa, can you assist Donald?" "Sure, my pleasure." Patty went to bring the three women to the building while Siobhan and Lisa waited at the First Aid room. Siobhan heard Cal and Donald arrive and walked out into the hall to direct them to the room. "Nice place. Lisa, I drove the Tahoe so Cal and Siobhan can leave when they want to." "Donald, before you leave, would you look at their medical and make a list of anything you think they might need to keep on hand?"
"Sure no problem." Patty brought in the first woman. Donald reached into his bag and got out exam gloves for he and Lisa. Cal and Siobhan left. On the way back home, Cal called Miguel and had him search for a diesel ambulance built before 2007. "You're buying an ambulance?" Siobhan asked. "Well, it hit me that we had no way to transport patients and Donald only has his bag. An ambulance could also carry a lot of essential equipment." "True." Cal got on the phone and called Andy. "Andy, find me a good. young, SF medic that wants to relocate. Pay is $90K with free housing, utilities and internet. Yes. "Why an SF Medic?" "Because in a lot of countries they are trained better than their doctors. He can act as backup, plus double as the ambulance driver." "Sly." On Friday, Miguel called Cal back. "Cal, I found a 2003 Freightliner FL50 Ambulance for $18K. If you want to check it out it's up in Denver." "That's okay. Go ahead and get it and do your thing and we'll turn it over to Jon and Barry and they can do a complete overhaul. Do you have the funds?"
"No problem. We'll settle up later."

After the church service , everyone gathered at the Community Center and socialized and ate the good foods the people had brought. Cal was out on the patio after the meal talking with a group of men. Larry walked over and listened to the conversation. There was a lot of conversation about the new clinic with a man Larry hadn't met. Cal looked over and saw Larry standing there and brought the new guy over.
"Larry, this is Dr. Donald Gaddy. He's opening up a clinic out here."
"Good to meet you Doctor," and shook his hand.
"How's the new place?" Cal asked.
"USS just got through finishing our shelter. I'm a neophyte when it comes to things like that. I'd like you to stop by when you can and see what I can do to improve our situation."
"Sure Larry. What about Tuesday?" I've got to take the Doc in tomorrow to talk to the builders about the clinic."
"That would be good, Cal."
"Where's the clinic going?"
"Just down the road from the General Store."
"Nice location. I'll be sure to check in. I have a copy of all my medical records."
"That will be helpful." Donald said.
"Doc, if there is any way I can help you out, please let me know." Larry said.
"Well, we need to build the clinic first. Your offer is much appreciated."
Larry left and went to find Sherry.
"Is he living on the Ranch?" Donald asked.
"No, but he's been a real asset to the Ranch for a long time. He's retired from one of the three lettered agencies and is a good friend. Also, his wife is an interior decorator. She could be a help with decorating your waiting area."
"Good people seem to gravitate toward you, Cal."
"You're here, aren't you?" Cal smiled.
Cal drove Donald into see Sam and Gary. When shown the plan Sam sat back in his chair . "I saw a clinic up in Oregon that was like this. They used 6x8 D logs with clean room panels throughout the inside."
"That's exactly what I want, except for the reception area."
"Well, this won't be a problem. You good with the plans Gary?"
"Yeah, sure. Are the inside dimensions going to remain the same Doctor Gaddy?"
"Yes, just like those plans. These are the plans I used to build my old clinic in Tulsa."
"Gentlemen, I'd like to make one change. On the back side of the clinic, add an attached 25x30 garage with doors, a 12 foot ceiling and an entrance into the clinic."
Donald looked at Cal. "We don't have an ambulance."
Cal grinned. You will."
Donald nodded. "Add it."
"Also Donald, I'd dig a basement for your heating and air. It will free us space on the main floor and give you more storage space.
"Okay then. It'll take Gary about four days to redraw the plans. Meanwhile, the men can be sorting and start processing the logs. We'll get out to survey and start moving dirt on Monday next."
As Cal and Donald were driving back, Donald asked about the ambulance.
"When I was over at the Women's Shelter the other day it struck me we have no way to transport patients into town other than the helicopter. I had Miguel look for a specific year vehicle because of our use of bio-diesel. He's picking it up this week and polishing it up. Once he's finished, it will be turned over to our master mechanics to go over everything completely, to include rebuilding the engine and transmission. I'm also getting you a qualified driver for it who can assist in medical emergencies…and before you say anything about the cost…Larry is paying for it."
"Man, you guys are something else."
"Just for your information, once Sam's crews get started, they will get it dried in pretty quick. That way, if the weather gets bad, work on the inside can continue. You can expect them to start pouring the basement before the end of next week. They use additives in the concrete to strengthen it and cure faster. The only thing that will slow them down is they construct the building in their yard, disassemble it, then bring it out to the site and reassemble it. Sam will tie into our waterline and install a fire hydrant near your building. Sam's crews will handle everything else, including the solar power installation. He's probably ask you for an equipment list and their power requirements."
"I can put that together and email him. Things are moving quickly. I'd better finish ordering everything.
"Don't worry, if your equipment comes in before the building is finished, we can store it for you until you are ready to install."
Cal dropped Donald off at his house and went down to the Facility.
"Found you a medic." Andy said as Cal walked into the office. Take a look at this."
Cal looked in the folder at its contents.
"Ted Andrews. E-7, Silver Star, college. Certified as Colorado EMT-P. Where did you find him?"
"Carl Phillips at National pointed him to me. After four trips to the 'Stan, he's decided to cut the cord. I have no Idea what his plans are."
"Where is he now?
"He's with Tenth Group."
"Get hold of him and have him call me. If he's still out-processing, they may give him leave to look for a job and get housing. I can go pick him up and bring him down for a weekend."
"I'm on it"
"Check that off the list," Cal said to himself.

Cal was heading back to the house and spotted Billy on the ToolCat headed toward the greenhouses. He followed and watched as Billy ran the landscape rake around the greenhouses, picking up rocks that had worked their way up through the soil. Cal got out of his truck and walked over to where Billy was working. Billy saw him coming and stopped. "How's the ToolCat working out Billy?" "It's great Dad!. It's quiet, except they kept the back warning thing. We barely use a quarter of the battery a day, working 8 hours." "What are you going to do with the rocks?" "When I'm finished here. I'll go get one of the dump trailers, attach the bucket loader to the ToolCat, load the rocks and pile them in the quarry near the roadbed material." "Good idea. Well, don't let me keep you. Good work." Cal went to the house and poured a glass of iced tea. He was standing there, sipping tea and gazing out the window. Siobhan walked in and saw him standing there, walked up to him and put her arms around his waist, laying her head on his back. "You're antsy. You need something to do." Siobhan whispered. Cal turned around. She looked up at him. "Cal, we're getting a medical clinic. Other people besides Ranch personnel will have access to it. In case the ambulance has to go out, wouldn't it be convenient to have the locations programed into a GPS for quicker routes?" Cal grinned. "And every one wonders why I married you." Cal pulled his phone out a hit speed-dial. "Miguel. Can you mount an in-dash GPS in the ambulance?" Good. Make it happen." Cal turned to Siobhan. "Well, now I'll just send someone out to get the coordinates of every ranch and homestead within ten miles." "That won't last long. Does Donald need to meet with anyone at St. Mary's?" "Yeah, I guess so. I'll ask him." Cal again reached for his phone and called Donald. "Donald, would it be helpful to meet with the president of St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, Bob Wilson?" "Well, yes, it would Cal." "Great. I'll set up an appointment for us tomorrow morning, if he's available." "Cal, let me drive. I need to start getting used to getting around." "Sure, and you probably need to bring Lisa along also, since she'll be part of the clinic also." "Of course." "Okay, let me make the call and I'll get back with you." "You wanted to see me Sergeant Major?" "Yes, Sergeant Andrews. Have a seat." After putting some papers in his outbox, the SGM looked at Ted. "Are you sure you don't want to re-enlist?" "I'm sure Sergeant Major. After Iraq and four trips to Afghanistan, I'm kind of burnt out. I like taking care of people, but I'd like to do it where the bullets aren't flying so thick. I've already received a job offer and am going there this weekend to check things out." "Yes, I saw the leave application. I think I know two or three people there and they were all top notch soldiers. Well, I wish you good luck and if there is anything I can do don't hesitate to call." "Thank you Sergeant Major. I'll miss the people, but I need to move on." "I understand. Have a safe trip." Ted met Cal at the Colorado Springs Jet Center Friday morning. Cal had him strap in in the co-pilot's seat. "How long is the flight?" Ted asked after they were airborne. "About an hour and fifteen minutes, but we've got a headwind. Hey, I'm glad you agreed to come down this weekend. I thought it would be better for you to see it for real than a few pictures in an email." "For sure." "Ted, I inherited my Ranch from a buddy who as killed in Iraq. Over the years I've developed it into what it is now. Along the way, I've gathered around me a group of people who are as tight as any A-Team. We've developed a great community and all are willing to fight to preserve what we have. A good many are veterans and are good at what they do." Cal set up the aircraft to prepare to come in on runway 28. Ted remained off the intercom to allow Cal to concentrate on his landing. They landed and taxied over and parked in front of a hanger. Ted took his travel pack off the plane and followed Cal over to an RV and stored the pack in the back seat. When they started off Ted was surprised at the lack of sound. "This is electric?" "Yes, many of the vehicles with the exception of heavy equipment is EV. The EV conversion plant is just across the road from here." Ted sat quietly, taking in in his surroundings as they drove along. Cal pulled up in front of what Ted assumed a guest house and got out. Cal took him inside and showed him the amenities. "If you want, I'll run you down and show you where they are working on the clinic." "Sure. This is quite the place you have here. I see you have greenhouses also. Do you do commercial farming too?" "Well, yes, kind of. "We grow and prepare most of the food for ourselves. We do sell some to local markets and restaurants. We try to be self-sustaining."
"Preppers?" Cal looked at Ted. "Basically. We've set ourselves up not to depend on anyone else in case the SHTF. We've gone through several things and came out on top. You see that mesa over there? Well, we've excavated a shelter complex that will protect us from just about anything except a direct hit from a nuclear weapon or an asteroid strike." "This is getting interesting more and more." Ted said.

Cal drove him down to the site in the EV and Ted looked it over. Then Cal took him over to Miguel's and they looked at the ambulance. Carlos was installing the GPS when they went in. The ambulance had new paint and the final touches were being done. Miguel came out of the office and walked over.
"What do you think Cal?" "Looks great. What did you have to do on the inside?" "Not very much. A couple of rough panels we replaced, but other than that, almost like new. We'll be turning it over to Jon on Tuesday." Ted glanced at one of the work stalls and did a double-take when he saw what they were restoring. "Is that a Dodge Power Wagon?" "Yep." Miguel said. "That's a 1957 with four-wheel drive. Great barn find." "Is it for sale?" Ted asked. "Well sure. Once it's complete." "I'll buy it from you right now if you can do a couple of things for me." Miguel look at Cal, who nodded." "What do you need?" Asked Miguel. "I want it painted Forest Green." Ted said. Miguel smiled. Well, I guess you have a truck." "My Grandfather had one like this." Ted said, running his hand over the fender. Turning to Cal, Ted said, "I'll take the job." "Are you sure?" Cal asked. "I get a good feeling about this place. I feel good here." Ted said. "Well, let's go get you introduced to the Doc." "That night at dinner Becky was charmed by Ted, but he paid very little attention except to answer her questions. Siobhan practically had to peel Becky away to help with dishes when Cal and Ted got up and went to sit in Cal's study. "Where are you from Ted?" "I spent my younger years in Connecticut. My Dad made a killing in the market and got out before the dot com bubble burst. We moved to North Carolina and lived in a little place called Cricket until I joined the Army." "Cricket? Near North Wilkesboro?" "Yep." "You have a girlfriend?" "No. I had one in high school before I joined, but I came back after Training Group and she was five months pregnant. After that I didn't have, or take time to date except for occasional casual stuff. You stay gone so much it wasn't worth taking the time to get involved." ?What about your family?" Ted dipped his head. "I'm the only one left, except for some distant cousins in Pennsylvania. My Dad and Mom have passed." "I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you will consider us your family now. By the way, every other Sunday after church, we have a community dinner at the Community Center. It gives everyone time to socialize and catch up with one another. I hope you will attend. It'll give you a chance to meet everyone." "Yes, I definitely will." Siobhan stuck her head in the door. "Cal, Donald and Lisa are here." "Tell Donald to come in here." Donald walked in and Ted stood. "Donald, this is Ted Andrews, your EMT." "Good to have you on board Ted. Cal tells me you're a Special Forces Medic." "Yes Sir." "Great. I'll look forward to working with you. Cal, I got a call from Dan White, the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator for Mesa County. He wants to roll us into their emergency response network. They will provide us with extra equipment, especially radios, medical equipment and supplies. What do you think?"
"I think it's a good idea. I'd talk to Bob and see where you work into the system." "Yeah, I think it will be good also. So Ted, when will you be with us?" "Oh, I'm just about finished out-processing the military. I can be here in a couple of weeks." "How long did you serve? "Eleven years." "Are you going to miss the pension you would have gotten?"

Doc, right now I'm worth around $8 million. I was in Special Forces because I enjoyed it. I was just rode hard and put up wet too many times."
"Well, we won't work you that hard and I hope you'll enjoy it."
"I'm sure I will. I do enjoy helping people.
The next morning at breakfast, Cal announced he was taking Ted flying.
"Can I go Dad?" Becky asked.
"Sure. Are you going Billy?"
"Yeah, I'll go. Where are you flying?"
"Down toward Gateway then around toward Casto Reservoir. Not too long."
As soon as the breakfast dishes were cleared, everyone grabbed their coats and headed to the airfield.
When Cal opened the hangar door Ted saw the three SuperSTOL aircraft sitting there with the wings folded.
"What are these?" Ted asked.
"SuperSTOL aircraft. The olive green one is mine, the red one is Becky's and the Blue one is Billy's."
"They have pilot's licenses?"
"Billy has had one about a year and Becky just got hers."
The four of them rolled the aircraft out onto the apron and unfolded the wings. Each pilot went through their pre-flight checks and they all climbed aboard. Cal got on the radio and told Becky to take the lead and he would pull up the rear. Ted was amazed as he watched as each plane made a short field takeoff.
"Now that was definitely a short takeoff." Ted said.
"I love flying these planes. You can take off and land practically anywhere." Cal said.
"Definitely not like the 172 I learned on." Ted said.
"You have a pilot's license?" Cal asked.
"Yep. Got it between tours to the sandbox."
"Want to take the stick?"
"Sure."
"Co-pilot's plane."
Cal watched as Ted flew the plane. He had a steady hand and did really well.
"Becky, fly over the Palisade then come left and follow the Dolores River to Flat Top Mesa. I'll take lead from there."
Cal pointed out the Palisade to Ted. Ted flew steady and followed Becky and Billy over the Palisade and followed the Dolores River. When they reached Flat Top Mesa, Cal announced "Pilot's plane." He pulled ahead of Becky and changed course for Casto Reservoir. As they neared the reservoir Cal told Becky and Billy to follow him in. Cal adjusted the speed and flaps and landed on a dirt road near the reservoir and pulled ahead around a curve. Cal shut down the plane and got out. They watched as both Billy and Becky made fifty foot landings.
"These planes are amazing!" Ted said. "I've got to get one of these!"
"Well, You've got some time before you start working full-time. I got mine at Wild West Aircraft in Nampa Idaho. It would help you to take their familiarization course. I have a trailer to tow these planes so you could drive up there, take the course and tow your plane back. I'll give you the contact info when we get back."
"Uh…Cal, can I stow the plane in your hangar. I'll be glad to pay rent."
"Sure you can. And I don't charge rent." Cal said.
Billy and Becky walked up. "How do you like the plane Ted?"
"I love it! I'm thinking of buying one myself." Ted said.
"Wait until you have a little practice. You'll be able to take off in the length of a parking space and land on a dime." Becky said.
"You want to take he off?" Cal asked Ted. "I'll talk you through."
"Sure!"
"Okay guys, We'll take the lead. Let's do some canyon flying."
Everyone boarded their planes and prepared to take off. Cal instructed Ted on his flap settings and turned Ted loose. Ted took off and was surprised when the plane leaped into the air.
"Whoa! WOW! This baby gets right into the air!" Ted said.
"Turn to 340 and fly that canyon."
Ted was steady on the stick and you could see the joy as he maneuvered through the canyons on the way back to the Ranch. When the got in sight of the airfield, Cal called Mike to make sure there wasn't any incoming traffic. He talked Ted through the setup for landing and let him have at it. Ted did a conservative approach and roll out.
Everyone helped fold the wings and roll the planes back into the hangar.
"Thanks guys, I enjoyed that." Ted said.
"When we get to the house I'll give you the contact information for the people up in Nampa."
"Can you recommend a real estate agent? I've got a lot of stuff in storage and an apartment won't kick it." Ted asked.
"Will a three-bedroom house suffice?" Cal asked, grinning.
"Should be. Is it far from the clinic?"
"Not too far."
"Cal took the next left and drove to the end of the graveled street. Getting out of the EV he walked up to the front porch of a cabin.
"Will this do?"
Ted stood there wide-eyed. "Wha….is this for rent?"
Cal grinned. "Not exactly. Since you are practically a part of the community, This is yours to use…rent free. Make it into your new home."
"I...I don't know what to say Cal."
"Just take care of our people. Come on. I've got some steaks to cook."

Cal and Donald watched as the last of the roofing was put on the clinic. "What happens next?" Asked Donald. "You'll have to talk to the site manager to find that out," replied Cal. They walked over to the supervisor's trailer, knocked, and went in. "Hey Cal, what's up?" "The Doc was wondering what the next step of construction was, Jim." Jim got up from his desk and walked over to a project printout pinned to the wall. "As you can see here, they finish the roof today, then start on walls, wiring, and plumbing. Once that is done, insulation, flooring and then the clean room panels. The wiring and plumbing is done simultaneously so that will go quick, as will the insulation. We plus up the crews to get it done faster."
"This is getting done quick!" Donald observed. "Yes, in another week and a half, you'll be able to start moving in your furniture and equipment." Jim replied. They thanked Jim and left. "When is Ted arriving?" Donald asked. "He's coming in Thursday." "…and the ambulance?" "I'm not sure. I know Jon, Barry, and Dennis were all working on it. You want to go take a look?" "Sure." They took the EV up to the maintenance bay and drove in. The newly refurbished ambulance with its day-glow paint scheme stood out in the bay. Jon and Dennis were working in the engine compartment when they walked over. "How's it going, guys?" Cal asked. "Oh, Hey Cal, Doc. We're just about finished. We needed to replace some of the hoses on the air conditioning system. For all intents and purposes, you have a brand new vehicle. Whoever had this either didn't use it very much or took excellent care of it. We'll do some final checks, but it will be ready tomorrow." Donald turned to Cal. "We need to have Ted take the ambulance in to St. Mary's next week and get it outfitted. Mesa county EMS is footing the bill. They want to include us in their call system also. Another of the benefits is they'll provide us with another EMT-P to work with Ted." Cal frowned. "This is snowballing." "Nothing to worry about. I checked their call stats and there's maybe 3 - 4 calls per year from this area. Most of it could have been taken care of in the nearest clinic instead of transporting to the nearest hospital." "Okay, good. Do you have everything ordered?" "Yes. All the drugs are being held at St. Mary's until we're ready to open." "Hey Cal! When is the pedestrian bridge going to be finished?" Barry asked. "They're done with construction. They're just waiting for the Department of Transportation inspectors to certify it." "Good! It will be nice to run down to Casey's for lunch using an EV instead of one of the larger vehicles." Ted drove to the storage lot and hooked up the trailer he had there. He bought the trailer from another soldier who needed the cash for half of its original price. It looked like it was brand new. After checking the electrical hookup, he drove around to his storage unit and backed the trailer up to the garage door of the unit. He hoped the trailer would hold it all. He had been selective at what he'd bought at sales and from other soldiers, trying to keep everything matching. He had bought linens and bathroom things on sale when they came up and was always using the coupons from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. He had all kinds of kitchen utensils, silverware, and cast iron pots and pans; some of which belonged to his mother and grandmother. It took him a couple of hours, but he finally got the trailer loaded. He swept the place out and closed the door. Driving around the office, he closed his account and drove to a Motel 6 to spend the night. After getting his overnight bag and securing the truck and trailer he went to his room. Feeling his stomach rumble, he went next door and got three Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a large, iced tea to take back to his room. Ted ate and watched the news for a while before turning in, wanting to get an early start in the morning. Ted's alarm went off at 0530. He got up and did his 3 S's and hit the road for Cal's ranch. A couple of hours later he stopped for breakfast at a truckstop off of I-70 to take a break. After eating, he sat there with another cup of coffee and wondered what his future would bring. Many had told him the fears they had separating from the service but he considered this just another PCS. Whatever, he'd make the best of it as he could. He could always move on. But he had a feeling about his new job. Something was different and it didn't feel bad. He left a nice tip for the waitress, paid his check and hit the road. Another four hours and he'd step into the next segment of his life. At 1215 Ted pulled into Casey's parking lot. He got out of the truck and stretched for a moment then walked to the restaurant. Going in, he took off his ball cap and waited at the desk. A waitress came up and took him to a table. He heard his name and turned to see Cal and Siobhan sitting at a table. Cal motioned him over and the waitress followed hm to the Stammtisch. "Annie. He's with us." Annie smiled and asked Ted what he would like to drink. Ted asked for iced tea and picked up the menu. "How was the drive?" Cal asked. "Not bad. Traffic was fairly light. " Annie came back with Teds tea and prepared to take his order. "Ted, try the elk burger." Siobhan recommended. "Okay, I'll have the elk burger with fries and a side of Cole slaw." "The clinic is in its final stage. They're installing furniture and equipment today and tomorrow. The ambulance is ready and you'll be taking it to St. Mary's Monday to get it equipped." Cal said. "What about EMT kits?" Ted asked. "St. Mary's is providing them. It's all tied in with the County EMS to keep them standardized." Ted nodded. He'd work it out with Dr. Gaddy the extra things he'd like to have, after he checked the kit. "Do you need any help unloading?" Cal Asked. "I sure could. Several pieces are quite heavy." Ted replied.

Cal got on the radio and did a net call for anyone who could spare a little time to help Ted unload his household items. They all went to Ted's cabin and there and within a few minutes there were a dozen men and women there to help unload the trailer. In less than an hour the furniture was moved in and with the help of the women, placed in the most logical areas (according to the women). Boxes of kitchen items were unpacked and placed in drawers and cabinets. The newly purchased items were run through the dishwasher. "Wow!" Ted said. That's the quickest I've ever got moved in after a move." Ted exclaimed. "We all try to help each other." Siobhan said. "You'll get your turn." "Gladly." Ted said. Doc Gaddy drove up about then. "I didn't think you'd be here this soon, Ted." Ted smiled. "I got an early start." "Well, I've got some good news for you. The County is assigning another EMT-P here as your partner. Cal, are any of the apartments open?" "Yeah, there's a couple." "Good. The new EMT is a female. I don't figure she can move in with Ted just yet." Doc said, grinning at Ted. Cal chuckled and Ted turned red. "Ted you'll be taking the ambulance to St. Mary's to get it outfitted Monday. Your new partner will meet you there. You'll also be bringing back several boxes of controlled and uncontrolled drugs for the clinic the hospital is holding for me." "Sure thing." "Come with me. We need to pick up the ambulance and take it down to the clinic." Ted got in Doc's Tahoe and they drove down to the maintenance bay. Ted looked at the Day-Glow green ambulance with a reflective down the side. "Wow! That's a nice ambulance!" Jon came over and handed Ted the keys. "It's all yours. All fueled up and ready to go." Ted got in and cranked the engine. It sounded good. Slowly pulling out through the huge door, Ted fell in behind the Doc and followed him to the clinic.
"Where are they transferring you to?" Grace asked. "Out to Glade Park. I didn't even know they had a station out there. Eller told me it was some kind of new coverage for the southeast of the county." "Glade Park? That fifteen miles out of town!" Grace exclaimed. "More or less. I'll miss you cuz, but duty calls." Carla said. "Where will you be staying?" "The Doc I talked to said they had an apartment set aside for me. God only knows what its going to look like. I'm supposed to meet the other EMT at the hospital in the morning and follow him out. Doc Gaddy met Ted at the clinic early. Ted check the oil levels and let the engine run a few minutes to warm everything up. Doc came out of the clinic, locked the door and crawled into the cab. "Let's do it. Cal had the GPS programmed with the residences in this part of the county. St. Mary's location is programmed also." Ted punched some buttons on the dash d scrolled through the listings and selected "St. Mary's". Because of the winding road, it took almost thirty minutes to make the trip. They pulled up to the side of the hospital and Doc went inside to see where they wanted to load and install the equipment. They were directed to another door near the ambulance parking and two men came out with a cart and started installing equipment and filling the oxygen tank. It took about 45 minutes to get everything to standards. During this time Ted was going through the kits supplied, verifying the contents. While he was inventorying the kits, another EMT walked up. "Doctor Gaddy?" She asked. Ted looked up, then stood. "No, I'm Ted Andrews. Doc is inside talking to the hospital president." Carla stuck out her hand. "Hi, I'm Carla Stewart. I've been assigned to the station with you." Ted chuckled. "Are you laughing because I'm a woman? Ted froze and frowned. "No ma'am. I take it you haven't been out to Glade Park. There isn't a 'station' as you might have come to expect. You'll have to see to understand." Carla's faced softened. "Sorry, it's just sometimes…" "I understand Carla. You being Paramedic qualified says enough for me. Welcome aboard." Carla smiled. "How did you get on this gig?" "I'll tell you my story if you will tell me yours." Ted looked around. "We should be getting back in time for lunch. My treat, and we'll talk." Doc came out with four large carts of boxes. They loaded the boxes in the back of the ambulance and headed back to the clinic. Ted backed the ambulance into the garage and closed the door. Lisa was waiting for them and they unloaded the drugs from the ambulance. After getting everything in it's place and locked up, Doc got everyone together and made introductions.

"Carla, it's good to have you here. We're not opening the clinic for a couple more weeks so we have time to get everything in order, HTR is sending down a guy to upgrade communications on the ambulance and put a base station in the clinic. so you two can take a break. Carla, here's a gate opener to the back gate. Lisa will take you to your apartment and get you settled. Ted, just stay by your radio." "Doc, I'm headed up to Idaho in the morning to pick up my plane. I should be back by Saturday." "Okay, fine." Ted looked at his watch. "Carla, do you need any help unloading your truck?" "Sure."
Ted followed Lisa and Carla up to the apartment building and parked off to the side. Lisa led Carla to a door and unlocked it. When Carla walked in, she gasped. "It's only a one bedroom apartment, but it's pretty well set up." Lisa said. "My God! This is going to cost me a fortune!" Puzzled, Lisa asked, "What do you mean? Didn't they tell you the apartment is $100 a month?" "What!?"" "That's the way the owner of the ranch runs things. It's just enough to cover any maintenance." "Wow!" They walked back outside to Carla's truck and started unloading boxes. Carla directed them to just stack the boxes in the small den. She would unpack later. Lisa left and took the EV back to the clinic. "Let's take my truck and get some lunch." Carla closed the door and followed Ted out to his truck. She remained silent as ted drove back toward the clinic, but took a different gate and went across the road to a small complex. Ted parked in front of Casey's Restaurant. "Wait until you taste the food here." Ted said. When they walked into the restaurant a waitress waved for them to select any table. Once they were seated the waitress came over to get their drink order.
"What's good here?" Carla asked. "Everything. I, myself, am going to have the elk burger. It practically melts in your mouth." Carla looked over the menu. The waitress came over with their drinks and to take their orders. Carla ordered the Elk Burger with fries and Coleslaw and Ted ordered the same. "So, what's your story?" Carla asked. "Ladies first." Ted grinned. "Well, I'm originally from Prescott, Arizona. My Dad was a fireman there for 28 years before he retired. He and my Mom still live there. I loved being around the fire station and wanted to be a fireman when I grew up until I watched the training. Reality hit me that women have no business being on the end of a fire hose. I looked into the EMT program and liked it. I studied hard and got my paramedic quals and here I am. Now, what about you?" "Just got out of the military. I was a Special Forces Medic with time on his hands between all expense paid trips to the sand box, so I earned my EMT and Paramedic certs. Got tired of the political B.S. and decided to find something better and was offered a job by Cal." "Who is this 'Cal' I've been hearing about?" "Well, he owns the HTR Ranch and has his fingers in just about everything in the area. He doesn't flaunt it though. He's quick to jump in and help someone, whether its to shovel a stable out of help someone in need. I've liked what I've seen so far. He arranged for the ambulance and the clinic. I don't know, It seems when he sees a need for something, he goes out of his way to make it happen." The waitress brought their food and the talking ceased for a few minutes. "Ohhhh, this is good!" Carla said, wiping her mouth. "It is good. Not as good as my pizza, but good." "You make your own pizza?" Carla asked. "Sure, doesn't everyone? Carla chuckled. "I didn't see that coming." Ted grinned. "So I like to cook. You just might be surprised." "Then you'll just have to cook for me to make me a believer." Ted slid a French Fry into his mouth and looked at her. "You're on. What about Sunday?" Carla hesitated. "Just pizza, nothing else?" Ted nodded. "Scout's honor." "Okay." They finished their meal and Carla insisted on paying her portion. They went back to the clinic and found Lisa and the Doc sorting the medicines out and storing them. Ted and Carla went through the ambulance equipment and kits and added a few things from stores. "You have a plane?" Carla asked. "Not yet. I've got one on order. I have to go and pick it up." Carla gave him a quizzical look. They heard the clinic phone ring. Lisa came out to where they were working. "Carla, you need to go up to your apartment. The Community Welcome Wagon representatives are waiting for you." Carla got up off her knees and started to leave. "Wait!" Ted called out. He went into the clinic and quickly returned with a box and a radio. "Keep this with you at all times from here on. Inside is a charging cradle. Just leave it at your apartment. We have extra cradles here." Carla drove up to the apartment complex and was met with a group of women carrying boxes. "Carla? Hi, I'm Siobhan Coleman. I know you haven't had time to get settled in. We have gathered you some starter food as a welcome to our community."
Everyone introduced themselves as they entered the apartment. Siobhan set her box on the counter. "We've got an assortment of vegetables and meats that are grown here on the Ranch. Also, I added some spices and other things." "Thank you all so much. I've still got to unpack my kitchenware." "Gotcha covered." Siobhan said. "I also have a pack of paper plates, plasticware and cups. You don't have to worry about dinner tonight. Donald, Lisa, Ted and yourself are invited to dinner. Casual dress. It's just simple country fare. We eat at 7:00." "Why thank you and thank you for the warm welcome." Carla said. The women helped pack the 2.1 cubic foot freezer with the foods they had brought. Another lady sat out a bowl of assorted fruits. "I baked bread this morning and brought you a loaf. There's butter and cheese we make here in the frig." "My goodness! Do you all ever have to go to the grocery store?" Carla asked. Siobhan laughed. "Once in a Blue Moon."

They all sat down and discussed the different aspects of the Ranch, the amenities, and the social activities. They left Carla with a good feeling about her new job. Carla, Lisa, Donald and Ted showed up at the Coleman home at 7:00. Cal invited them in and offered drinks. Lisa and Carla went into the kitchen to talk to Martha and Siobhan. "Did you get settled in?" Siobhan asked Carla. "Some. I'll do it a little at the time. I've got all the essentials unpacked. "Well, if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask." "Ted, are you still going up to Nampa?" Cal asked. "Yep, I'm heading out in the morning. I went up and checked the trailer out this afternoon to make sure the lights and brakes worked." "You're going to have a good time. They'll show you a few tricks that would curl the toes of most people. We'll have to schedule a Fun-Fly this spring, maybe some camping with it." Ted, grinning, shook Steve's hand. I haven't had this much fun in a long time Steve." "Well, stick around and we can fly to some really great places." "Can't. I've got a new job starting soon and I've got a 650 mile drive. I appreciate everything Steve. "No problem. Safe flying!" moved the plane to the hangar. After rolling it off the trailer, he moved it inside. He stood there looking at his new plane with pride. He'd get Miguel's brother to paint the Special Forces Medic Crest on the Rudder to the plane when he had time. He went back to his cabin and started mixing dough. Around 10:00 Carla called and asked what time she should come down. "You could come on down now, if you want. We could watch the dough rise together."
Carla giggled. "Well, I was going to shave my legs, but watching dough rise sounds exciting. I'll see you in a few minutes." Ted grinned. "Interesting woman." A few minutes later, Carla knocked on the door. The door opened and a smiling Ted invited her in. "Wow!" Carla said, looking around. "Not bad for a bachelor's pad." "Want some iced tea?" Ted asked. "Please." Ted poured them both a glass of tea and sat them on the breakfast bar. "How was your trip?" "Outstanding! You've got to go flying with me sometime. I had so much fun. That plane can land anywhere!" "Why did you take up flying?" Carla asked. "I was bored. I didn't do much on the weekends so it filled in my time. Once I got my license, I'd fly to every obscure airfield I could find and look around. A couple of weekends ago I flew with Cal and his two kids on a fun flight through the canyons south of here." "No girlfriend to take up your time?" Ted's face darkened. "Oops! Sorry. That seems to be a taboo subject." Ted let out a deep breath. "No, it's okay. A couple of years ago, I came back from a 9-month tour in Afghanistan to a 'faithful' girlfriend who was 3-months pregnant." "Ouch! SO you gave up on women for a while, hunh?" "Something like that." Ted got up and pulled a bowl of covered dough out of the cabinet and pinched off a few balls. After rubbing his hands with olive oil, he started rolling the dough into breadsticks, placing them on a parchment covered dough peel. Carla got up and moved to his side. "What are you making?" She asked. "Breadsticks." Ted poured some garlic infused olive oil into a small bowl and using a pastry brush, coated the sticks with a light coat of oil. He then lightly sprinkled kosher salt on them. Picking up the peel, he opened the oven door and slid the breadsticks onto a pizza stone. He closed the door and set a kitchen timer. Carla started walking around , looking at the photos Ted had displayed on the walls. She stopped in front of one showing Ted and some children in a village. Ted walked up beside her. "Was this in Afghanistan?" Carla asked. "Yeah, near Sar e Pol. I had just taken out a guy's appendix." "What!?" "Yeah, I'm trained to do things like that, although I can't do it here." They walked around looking at pictures until the timer went off. Ted went over and pulled the breadsticks out of the oven and sat them on a tray to cool. "God! That smells good!" Carla commented. Ted pulled a plate out of the cabinet and transferred the breadsticks to it. "Have a seat and try these. They taste even better than they smell." Ted told Carla. "Ooooh. These are good!" Carla exclaimed. "He cooks, performs emergency surgery, flies a plane….Sir, you are a man of many talents!" Ted got up and pulled some peppers, onions, a jar of sauce, a package of sausage, two different blocks of cheese and a stick of pepperoni out of the refrigerator." "Can I help?" Carla asked. "Sure. Why don't you grate the cheeses." While Carla was grating the cheese Ted was chopping up onions and peppers, slicing the pepperoni and cooking the sausage. "Where did you get your pizza sauce?" Carla asked. "I made it. I keep a couple of quarts in the frig at all times. You can take a quart home with you if you want.." "No thanks. I'd rather eat it here with you." Carla blushed when she suddenly realized what she had said." Ted glanced at her and grinned. With their immediate hunger satisfied and their preps done, it was time to bake pizza. Ted told her she would have to get her hands dirty if she was going to eat his pizza.

"I already did. I grated all that cheese," she said.
"That was just the beginning. Open that bottle of olive oil."
As she did that, he cut off a piece of dough, rolling and stretched it out into a square about as large as the stone in the oven.
"Now sprinkle some cornmeal from that canister on the peel."
She did but he told her to put on more. Ted carefully picked up the dough and transferred it onto the peel. Next he formed raised edges. When he was done he grabbed the handle and demonstrated how the crust easily slid around the peel.
"Now pour some olive oil on top of the crust and spread it around with your hands.
She looked him in the eye.
"Go ahead. Get your hands dirty. The olive oil will keep the liquid in the sauce from making the crust soggy."
She giggled but put a hand in the oil.
"No, like this," he told her, putting his hand on hers without even thinking about what he was doing, and showed her how to spread the oil.
"Use both hands," Ted continued, and reached around her waist to guide her other hand. The feeling of his hands on hers, slippery with oil, made her feel tingly. The oil lubricated her already soft hands, letting his hands slip and slide against hers felt good. The dough was already covered but he didn't want to let go of her hands. Ted was enjoying being that close to her, and it was making him think of things he shouldn't be thinking about with her. He slid away from her, trying to not make it obvious to her the reaction she was giving him, and retrieved the pot of sauce from the stove. When the crust was glistening with olive oil, Ted spooned enough sauce to cover the crust.
"Now cover the sauce with mozzarella cheese. It will melt and hold the pizza together," Ted told her. After that, the sausage went on, followed by pepperoni, sliced onions and sliced bell peppers. Finally they put more mozzarella cheese on top along with cheddar cheese.
"Want to put it in the oven?" I asked her.
"Unh-uh. You do this one. I don't want to ruin dinner."
She watched fascinated as Ted easily transferred the pizza from the peel to the stone. He set a timer for twelve minutes and got to work making a smaller pizza with the remaining ingredients.
"We'll never be able to eat all that," Carla observed.
Ted just smiled and said, "You'll be glad to take leftovers home when you taste it. Trust me.
Ted got a bottle of wine out of the wine rack and opened it.
The larger pizza came out first, followed a few minutes later by the small one on the round stone. They were cooling on wire racks on the granite countertop.
"More olive oil?" Carla asked as Ted poured some into a small cup and reached for a pastry brush.
"The pizza bakes at five hundred degrees," he explained as he brushed the crust with olive oil. "That temperature destroys the taste and aroma of the olive oil. This puts back the aroma."
He watched Carla sniff the air. "That smells so good."
He grinned. "I know I said it about the breadsticks, but this is even better.
"When can we eat it?"
"It has to cool a little. I don't want to be responsible for burning your mouth. Give it a few minutes." He then poured the wine into two wine goblets.
Ted motioned with his chin towards a cabinet. "Take out a couple plates and some utensils."
She did that while he finished glazing the crusts of the two pizzas. Then she watched as he took out his pizza knife and cut both of them into squares.
"Square pizza?"
"Yes, it's not the way you usually see pizza, but it serves better at a dinner party."
"Oh, are you expecting more guests?" she asked.
Before he could stop myself, he spoke what was on his mind. "Not tonight. I'm not sharing you with anyone else."
Ted felt panic wash over him as he realized what he had said. Ted looked quickly in her direction. She was looking at him strangely, but there was a faint smile on her lips. He could feel himself starting to sweat. Neither of them said anything for a few minutes. He put healthy portions on both plates and carried them out to the table on the patio. Carla followed with forks, knives, napkins, and their wine glasses. The patio lights cast a nice glow around the area. Ted pulled out Carla's chair for her and she gifted him with one of those smiles that made his heart melt. He took his seat and said, "I hope you like it."
"Are you kidding? It will be hard not to embarrass myself by eating too much."
"Embarrass? Never. Eating a lot will only compliment the cook."
She looked into his eyes, his pulse quickened, and she spoke softly. "Then my compliments to the cook."
She took a bite, and her expression was priceless. "My God, Ted! This is incredible!"
Well, it sounded about like that. She was talking with her mouth full. She realized what she was doing and quickly put her napkin to her mouth, but sounds of "Mmmmm" and "Ohhh" continued. Once she swallowed, she could speak again though she was blushing.
"If one of the nuns in my old school heard that, they'd have punished me."
"Heard... ?"
"Talk with my mouth full," she explained and they both giggled. "I couldn't help myself," she continued. "You're wasting your time as an EMT. You should open a restaurant."
"You don't know if I'm wasting my time. We haven't been out on a call yet."
She looked Ted in the eyes and smiled, giving him goosebumps.
They finished their pizza and sat and sipped on their wine.
Carla sat her goblet down. "I hope it doesn't get too busy."
"Bite you tongue!" Ted grinned. "Seriously, this is going to be easy. I've checked and maybe one person a year has to be transported for an emergency to St. Mary's. Most of our calls will be to the clinic. I'll have to back up to get my paycheck."
Carla looked at him questionably.
"I'd be embarrassed to take the check for what little we do."
"Why are they paying us almost half again as much as other EMTs?"
"This is all part of Cal's plan. He draws in the best of people and they perform at their best."
They got up and took their dishes inside. Carla rinsed and Ted loaded the dishwasher. When the kitchen had been cleaned up, Ted refilled their wine glasses and they walked into the den.
