Did you ever wonder about Jack Wilson's seemingly better-than-anyone-else abilities?
A very short story from one of my muses...
Chapter 1
My return to the dragon homeland began when I encountered a very young dragon in the pear orchard - they love pears!
"Hello, Sir. Your aura tells me you are one of us. May I touch your hand?"
"Yes, child. You may touch me."
"Wow!"
"What is it child?"
"You are my great-grandfather, KnowsItAll. I am your great-granddaughter, QuickOfMind. Could you help me change to human form so I can hug you and be hugged in return?"
"What are you talking about, child? I only remember this human form and my name of Jack Wilson and I know nothing of dragons or ever being one of you."
"Could you see an image if I tried to project it on that wall?"
"Perhaps. I can see some that TeacherOfMany has projected."
"Look quickly, for I am very young and can only hold an image a few seconds."
"Go ahead, child. I'm watching."
"Mmmph!"
"You showed an older dragon changing to a human who looked much like me 50 years ago."
"It IS you, great-grandfather! You were our emissary to the United Peoples of the Milky Way but you were attacked during your presentation and we've been searching for you ever since you disappeared from their hospital. The United Peoples provided the best care they could for you, but dragons who can move between dragon and human form are very different patients than ordinary humans. We feared that you might never regain your memory and they we might never find you."
"And what will you do with me now that you've found me, child?"
"Take you home to great-grandmother CuresAll…"
"She's alive?"
"And she watches out the cave door for you to fly in every day - along with a lot of other family."
"How will we get there?"
"You riding on my back if the potion we all carry can't change you back to a dragon so you can fly yourself."
"How long does that potion take to act?"
"Some hours. You should be in a place comfortable for humans and dragons and large enough for an adult dragon to move around in and perhaps fly from."
"Is the barn in the next field acceptable?"
"One minute while I become invisible and then go check it."
"OK."
"Am I invisible?"
"All but the last two inches of your tail and the ends of your ears. It appears you've grown some since you last became invisible."
"Better now?"
"I think that covers it, but did you check the soles of your feet?"
"Oops!"
"That's not something very young dragons have ever had pointed out to them. Does your mother know where you are?"
"Just that I'd be looking for pears…"
"But not this far from home."
"You'll tell Momma?"
"No, child. You will tell her when we get there - because she will ask where you found me and you will answer truthfully, as all dragons are taught."
"Yes, great-grandfather."
"Give me the paper with the potion and then you go check the barn."
"Yes, sir."
This sounds as though it will taste bad and the transition will be painful - that probably will seem much worse than it was 50 years ago. There's also the possibility that I'll have to re-learn my balance as a dragon and re-learn magnetic navigation in that much larger body. When she returns…

Chapter 2
"Great-grandfather? Are you awake yet?"
"Speak softly, child. This potion makes my head hurt as well as my body."
"Yes, great-grandfather. Has more of your memory returned?"
"I'd also like the answer to that, Knows."
"Cures, my love! So good to see you again!"
"You too, old man. You do so well with the humans on Earth that the United Peoples have yet another 'until you are old' assignment for you when you're ready to return there."
"Not sure if I'll ever be 'ready' to return there but I will likely respond to the need and feel that I must return there to help a promising species through another 'end of the world' event. This next assignment will make maybe 300 years that my human identity of Jack Wilson has lived there, married, had children and then disappeared?"
"274 years so far with probably another 50 to 70 years for the next assignment - but you may be working with some of your human children and possibly even some of your human grandchildren."
"They've turned out well?"
"Yes. Not quite up to your abilities but more capable than most humans. All the adults are working where they can make a difference, whether as a healthcare worker, in law enforcement and even two useful members of the US Congress."
"Useful? As in they get things done for their constituents and the nation as a whole?"
"Exactly. What you would do if that's where your interests led you - instead of your Jack-of-All-Repair-Trades outlook which led you to choose 'Jack' as your human name, you unredeemable punster!"
"So I am, love. There's video about the assignment?"
"In your private cave. There are also 'new and improved' potions from MakerOfMeds for the transition to human and back to dragon."
"Improved in what ways?"
"Faster and less painful transitions - in both directions - and faster return to what's normal for that body. Maybe two hours?"
"Much better than the seven hours my return to this form needed this time. I'll be of dragon retirement age when this assignment ends?"
"Your first assignment was at 50, so add in the 274 years you've spent as a human, the 20 total years recuperating after previous assignments, the maximum of 70 years for this assignment and you'd be 414 and well past retirement age. If this assignment only lasts 50 years then you'll be 394. The two paid years of recuperation after this next assignment would make you 396 and you'll be four years away from retirement at 400."
"Seems like a lot of time to not be with family."
"It is, but we do keep in mental touch when circumstances allow it - and you've been credited with saving more than five million human lives. The actual number is probably higher, but some of the human records are very sketchy in times of turmoil."
