Today I went out to play with Duke and his favorite toy came apart. He gave me a dirty look so, I had to fix it. I came into the house, muddy boot and all, down the stairs to the cellar. Duke was behind me and his eyes on his toy all the time and he would bark at me if he thought I was too slow.
Let me give you a little history about Duke, I did not want him, but we got him for me. My wife was recovering from surgery but slept on the floor with her fingers in his crate so he would sleep and he would climb onto the bed and put his head on her stomach to help her with her pain. We took him on a trip to my daughters, 250 miles, for the first time, he climbed into a chair, and went to sleep, see my avatar. I would walk him twice a day and he really became my dog.
To get back to his toy, I put a bolt, a washer and a nut on the toy and took them back outside. You see, Duke's favorite toy is a long handled square shovel with a fiberglass handle. The rivet that was holding the shovel together, came out and had to be replaced.
If you are wondering how a dog plays with a shovel it all started when he was a little puppy and I was cleaning up after him using the shovel. He took offense that something of his was being taken away and he didn't like it. A short time later we had a family get together and the deck was bouncing. Just as Duke walked by the shovel that was leaning against the rail slid down under Duke and the war was on. Now I can work in the garden and Duke will bark, lift and chase the shovel for hours and never seems to tire of it.
That started when Duke was about six months old and he is still doing it today and shows no sign of stopping and he just had his 7th birthday. Duke is half lab and half rotty and is about 105 pounds, we still walk twice a day and he makes sure we walk. He goes every where I go except on hot days and is still my puppy.
