Mandy rolled over on her side, her eyes opening to another day. The sun burned her eyes and forced her to roll out of bed and into the bathroom. She went about her morning routine without even thinking about it, appearing in the kitchen all bathed and painted and set for another day of being important. It wasn’t until she picked up her briefcase and purse to leave that she noticed how quiet it was. The sun was up, so were the noisy birds. But, they weren’t. No orchestration of tweets and whistles. Hmm. Well, she did not have time to worry about it now, she made a point of showing up at work two minutes before the second person, to make it look as though she worked more hours than she did. A cup of coffee on her desk and a paper to glue her eyes on was all she needed.

So focused on her walk and her timing Mandy never noticed the reduction in vehicle traffic during her walk to work. It was only after the second cup of coffee that she realized she was still the only person in her office and it was already 0900 HRS 30 minutes past opening.
Still clutching her second mug of coffee Mandy meandered towards the outside window of her office. She was berating herself for staying so late at the Jamison's party as she wondered if she had any aspirin or Tylenol in her desk. Finally arriving at the window she looked out at the street focusing through her headache she finally saw what was in the parking lot on the west side of the building gasping loudly she tried to sit.

She was trying to figure it out, what it could possibly be. It was about 20 foot tall, with 3 legs or fins, it had what looked to be two windows or were they eyes? Was this thing mechanical or biological?
All she knew is that it scared the bejeebers out of her. At the top was a beacon or light or ray or something, when the light from it hit her, her body relaxed, her mind however did not, she was terrified when she felt herself walking towards whatever it was, like her body and her mind were no longer connected and her body was walking towards the thing against her will.

She bumped into the plate glass window and resumed control of her body. She was initially paralyzed, not knowing what to do or what she was fighting against. Then, against her will, she again walked into the glass. Again, she regained control of her body. This time, she had the presence of mind to walk backwards, away from the window and away from the monster outside. She closed the door and ran across the hall to Paul’s office. He had a radio, which was always on- very irritating, but you couldn’t say anything.
Classical music affronted her senses. She turned the volume down. Why didn’t he get hearing aids? Of course, the radio was tuned to NPR, public radio. The radio buzzed, then hissed, then there was faint talking. Mandy turned the volume up.
“In what the mayor is calling unprecedented-“
She didn’t hear the rest. Her body turned toward the office door and one foot followed the other. “No!” Mandy screamed, but no sound emerged from her.

After about 20 steps Mandy realized the attraction was reduced to a manageable level. Not gone completely but enough foe her to overpower the attraction it was no longer an irresistible force. Three or four more steps and again the level of compulsion reduced enough to allow Mandy to think clearly. Taking her time to look around and see what was there and more importantly allowing her mind to work on her problems she began to think like a trained ex-marine. While wondering why the compulsion was lower here in the hall Mandy realized she was standing directly in front of the elevator doors. Taking a tentative step down the hall she quickly realized the compulsion increased the further she got from the elevator doors Mandy did an about face and returned to stand in front of the elevator doors. Deciding to try to reach a workable solution which would allow her to escape whatever it was causing her compulsion. Allowing herself a moment of self pity during her analysis of the current situation Mandy found herself wishing she was in the Okanagan with her grands, grandpa Bill and grandma Betty on the farm. Pruning apple trees looked pretty good right now compared to her current situation. Pulling out her phone she decided to call either her brother George or his roommate her boyfriend Dave. After hitting speed dial #2 on her phone she brought it up to her ear hearing absolutely nothing swearing Mandy prepared to throw her phone winding up she threw it through the door into the break room. As soon as her phone left her hand the background compulsion to go to the machine was gone. About 50 seconds later she heard a plaintive "wh who threw that phone" come from the break room.

Uh, oh, thought Mandy. She was in trouble. She got caught throwing an object instead of using her words. She would need a good excuse. Then the moment caught her and she realized that she wasn’t the only person in the building, or at least on this floor. She pulled her suit jacket down, adjusted her cuffs, and stood up straight. Who ever that was she would certainly be able to dominate and manipulate. She took tentative, really brave, steps toward the door. She peered inside. “Jack? Jack do you know what is going on?” a classic diversion, she would not mention the phone, instead change the subject.
“I don’t understand.” Jack, an older man who was soon to retire said, pushing himself up from the floor. "Where is everybody? Oh, uh,” Jack rose to his feet, then staggered toward the back wall of the break room.
Mandy reached into the room and grabbed Jack’s arm. Mandy was a big girl. Not a giant, but she could hold her own. With one hand on Jack and the other on the door jamb, she managed to get Jack moving toward the hallway.
“This way, Jack!” She got him out the door. He reached back in to take hold of the door knob and betwixt them they got the door shut. “Over here, by the elevator.” Mandy said, pushing the older man to the double doors of the elevator.
“Okay,” Jack gasped. “What’s an old black man and a middle aged, I mean very young white woman doing here when everyone else is gone? I do mean everyone. Have you looked out the window?”
“Did you see the monster?”
“Monster? You jerking me around? I mean people. Me and Selma moved to the Senior condo on the river.”
“That’s a nice place. Great view. My mom wants to move in there.”
“Yea, we really like it. Anyway, I walk to work and don’t see a lot people on the way, but if you check the streets around the building, you’ll find everybody stayed home. I feel like an idiot. What’s going on? A holiday?”
“The building would be closed if it was a holiday. Listen, I noticed that the, I dunno, urge or attraction to walk out the window disappears right here in front of the elevator."

Bang, crash, bang, crash, bang, crash. On and on. what the hell thought Mandy as she and Jack rushed to the window. Another monster looking thing, even bigger was bashing the smaller one and people were tumbling out. Some were still able to get up as they fell and ran for any cover they could find. Others pawed through the falling people lookin for something. Friends family people still alive?
As the larger monster continued to bash the smaller one the bodies piled higher and higher. With a start the smaller monster seemed to come alive and began fighting off the larger monster. After a few blows the larger monster seemed to float for a moment and then took off like a rocket shooting flames from both feet. The smaller monster began playing another melody and the hiding people came out of hiding and began slowly returning to the smaller monster. The smaller monster, now with arms and claws began picking up the mass of bodies, some still alive and shoving the into a hole that had opened in its chest.
As she watched, Mandy kept pinching herself and shouting "wake up, wake up". Jack, standing beside her and also watching the scene quietly said, "its not a dream, this is real and whatever it is there seams to be another that is its enemy. We have to stop whatever music its playing before everyone goes back there."
Just then the larger monster returned, only this time it was holding something that looked like a giant hockey stick. It landed gently, directly in front of the smaller monster and with one swoop, swept the feet of the smaller monster out from underneath it. Crashing to the ground another hatch opened and people spewed from it. Some were moving and sprinted from the monster and some remained and tried to help others. By now hundreds of people were struggling, walking, limping and outright running away. The larger monster swept the remaining bodies away and immediately began to stomp the smaller one. Amazingly the creatures were too small to hold the masses of people but there they were, hundreds maybe thousands of people and they all came out of a monster no more than 2 stories tall. Impossible. Mandy was now certain she was dreaming.
After the larger monster seemed to have the upper hand it abruptly stopped, put the hockey stick away and helped the smaller monster to its feet. The two shook hands and both jetted off into the sky.
Looking down, Mandy and Steve could see hundreds of people milling about, dozens giving first aid and assistance and well over a thousand still bodies. They discussed the scene for a moment and Steve said, "I getting supplies out of the first aid room and going down to help anyone I can, you can help if you want."
Mandy replied, "not me, I am going home to get my shotgun and some ear plugs, these fucks aint getting me.

And the leaders of 4 countries - US, England, Russia and China, sat back and paid their wagers to each other, saying it was a good game and asking when the next game would be. Playing with real peons was so much better than a boardgame.
