Chapter 78 - Monday morning
"Girls, remember that you'll be staying at Sam Green's house today and the other days this week while the dog drive is going on. His sister, Mrs. McNabb, will be there to take care of you and her kids."
"Can't we be part of the shooters?"
"Sorry, Abby. You're not being discriminated against because of your age. Mrs. McNabb's daughter Sherrie is 13 and she's not one of the shooters either. We need larger caliber weapons than what you're able to shoot. Considering Lexi's description of the dogs that got away, I expect there to be some big and vicious animals among our quarry today."
"I'd rather be shooting than waiting."
"I know, Terry. Remember that I've promised to move you up to larger weapons as you are able to handle them. You'll get your turn to help the community when you're older or when an opportunity comes along that fits your abilities - remember that each of you has already had an opportunity like that."
"I rather my opportunities not be quite so scary."
"Scary or not, Abby, each of you did well when the opportunity presented itself."
"Can we drive the buggy?"
"Yes, Lexi. I'll give you turn by turn directions because you don't know yet the way to Sam Green's place..."
"I will after today!"
"Me too, Abby!"
"You're unusually quiet, Lexi."
"It may depend on how many turns there are and how many of the roads look alike. I'll tell you when we get back home, 'cause then I'll know for sure."
"Good logic, smart girl. I'll have you switch drivers every mile or so. That way each one of you can drive the buggy multiple times today."
~~~
"Hello the house."
"Hello, Bill and family. You can put your horse in the south pasture - there's water in a trough under the oak tree. Debbie's inside with her kids so the kids can go on in. The wood gas generator is fully warmed up so we can load up the truck and go meet the others."
"We'll take care of Rose."
"All yours, Mike and Lexi."
"You have something to put the bodies in, Sam?"
"Feed sacks to start with. If there are more than I have sacks for, I'll put the stakes up around the rest of the bed to hold them. Joe Henderson said he'd take up to twenty bodies to feed his hogs. Some of the other farms that keep hogs will take five or ten bodies each and my west pasture could use some fertilizer so I'll take all that are left after that."
"Good enough. Kate and Jack, hop in and we'll go."
~~~
"C'mon in Terry. I got the door."
"Thanks, Abby."
"Weren't you two part of the trailer trash on my school bus?"
"Sheridan Renee McNabb! To the bathroom."
"I'm not Sheridan, I'm Sherrie!"
"You are not in a good situation. You just compounded that. I'll use the lavender soap this time."
"No, Momma! Please don't! It tastes awful, even after brushing my teeth three times!"
"Mrs. McNabb?"
"Yes, Abigail?"
"I forgive her."
"That's sweet of you and exactly what I would have expected, but Sherrie disobeyed me and she knew the punishment. There's milk in the earthenware cooler on the back porch and cookies in the jar on the counter. You kids get a snack and I'll be back soon."
"I'll get plates and glasses for you."
"Thank you, Jerry."
"You're welcome, Lexi."
~~~
"Momma, please don't wash my mouth out with soap!"
"I keep my promises, Sherrie. You're 13 years old and it's high time you learned to keep your promises about how you refer to other people."
"Gmph! Yuck!"
"That's just your tongue. Now your gums..."
"I think I'm gonna puke!"
"Get down in front of the porcelain throne and let it all out."
"Momma, you're awful. I'm gonna tell Uncle Sam."
" Do you remember what he did when you broke the lantern?"
"I had to clean the goat pen by myself."
" Do you remember that he has more goats now?"
"I better shut up before things get worse."
"That's the smartest thing you've said today. You will apologize to Abigail and Teresa."
"Apologize to a little wimp who'd say 'I forgive her'? No way."
" Did you notice that all three girls have handguns and Mike has a rifle?"
"Huh?"
"You don't think very much of Jerry, but your little brother is much more aware than you are. When he saw the pistol on Abigail's belt, he whispered to me 'Can I get a gun that size to fit my hand?' You need to pay less attention to clothing labels or color coordination and more attention to the things that might kill you or keep you alive. Do you think that the person who took down the leader of the group that had us trapped in the caves just said 'Please go away'? If you'd been paying attention to something other than Kyle Trotter on Sunday, you'd have seen Abigail come down from the balcony with her rifle..."
"That was her?"
"Yes, the girl you just called a 'little wimp'. When a person who is armed treats you well, it's not because she's a wimp. Instead, it's because she has made a conscious choice to be nice to you. You may not understand this but Abigail's choice to forgive you for being a snooty little brat is about her, not about you. She knows the person she wants to be and has chosen to be that person no matter what others say or do. You may be older than she is, but you have a long way to go to reach her level of maturity."
"I've been mega-dumb, haven't I?"
"You chose that description."
~~~
"You think Grandpa might wash our mouths out with soap if we said something bad, Abby?"
"I don't ever want to give him a reason to even think about it."
"Me too."
"I hope Daddy and Momm... Kate don't know about it."
"I don't want my Dad to know about it either."
~~~
"The chocolate chip cookies are good, Mrs. McNabb - and I love goat's milk. Thank you."
"You're welcome, Abigail. Sherrie will be back with us in a little while. Sam said you girls bake bread almost every day?"
"You bake bread?"
"Yes, Jerry. Sometimes we bake cakes and cinnamon rolls. You wanna tell the story, Terry?"
"Sure. It started when Grandpa said he could teach me and Abby to bake bread like he did..."
~~~
"Abigail, Teresa. I'm sorry. Can we start over?"
"OK."
"Hi, I'm Sherrie."
"Hi, I'm Abby."
"I'm Terry."
"I'm Lexi."
"I'm Mike. You look like you have a bad taste in your mouth."
"You have no idea how bad..."

I use to get my mouth washed out with soap, DISH soap was what my mom used, much easier to squirt in the mouth.
Usually because one of my brothers would say I said something when I didn't and my mom did not believe me.
Not sure why she never believed me when I was the one who always told the truth.

Chapter 79 - Monday noon
"How'd you think the dog drive went today, Sam?"
"Well, Bill, other than needing a few more people on the 'driver' side and a few less on the 'shooter' side, I think it went well."
"We only had the one previous drive to work on the number of drivers versus shooters, but today's mix was much better than last fall."
"That it was, but I didn't expect nearly as many raccoons and foxes as we had."
"Me either. In fact, I didn't expect more than a couple of raccoons - certainly not the dozen we killed."
"Maybe their population stayed high because they were more aggressive than the feral dogs."
"That's certainly a possibility. You have a place for all the carcasses in the back of the truck?"
"Always need fertilizer in some area, so I'll bury them where they'll do the most good."

Chapter 80 - Monday afternoon
"Grandpa, do they skin dogs and use the skins like they do deer and rabbits?"
"It can be done, Terry, if the skins are in good condition. Maybe a fur-lined hat or fur lining for a pair of Mr. Isaac's boots?"
"What about smaller animals?"
"Abby, the bones of rats can be used for sewing needles."
"Really?"
"Get the 'Ha-Hu' volume of the encyclopedia and look up the Hopi - that's 'H-o-p-i' - Indians and see what they used for sewing."

Chapter 81 - Monday evening
============== Hi, it's Abby again. Today I'm nine years and one day old, but I don't feel any different than I did Saturday or yesterday. I wonder what's magic about being nine that means it's the age to get a gun? And I forgot to ask Grandpa earlier. It's too late tonight - he said "Lights out." a couple of minutes ago so I'm under a blanket with one of the squeeze flashlights. He's right about how much work it is to keep it going - I wouldn't want to keep squeezing while I read a chapter of a book.
I think he heard the noise of the flashlight 'cause he knocked and reminded me that it's bed time. I put the flashlight under my pillow on the first knock so he wouldn't see it if he opened the door.
~~~
I think he's taking his bath now, so I can write a little more. Staying at Mrs. McNabb's house is good and bad. Good because Mike and Jerry are about the same age so he has a boy to do things with instead of always being surrounded by girls. Bad that Sherrie is one of the the kids on the school bus that called us 'trailer trash'. Good that Mrs. McNabb doesn't put up with name calling and washed Sherrie's mouth out with soap. I washed my hands before helping with lunch and just from the smell I wasn't about to taste the lavender soap. Good that Mrs. McNabb does fun food like the 'Ants on a Log' that Grandpa showed us hot to make. I really liked the apple slices dipped in the powder you use to make chocolate milk - but anything chocolate is special now. Counting them up, I think more 'good' than 'bad'.
We got two chapters of 'Little House' tonight. I think maybe Grandpa wanted to make up for Sherrie calling us 'trailer trash' - he's nice like that. We gotta be up early tomorrow to go to Mrs. McNabb's house again while the dog drive goes on so time for me to stop. =============
Chapter 82 - Tuesday morning
"Abby, would you be insulted if I offered you some clothes?"
"Probably not, Sherrie. What kind of clothes?"
"Riding costumes."
"When would I wear them?"
"You have a horse and you're getting another one in a year or so. I've been riding in parades and rodeos since I was five so I probably have some fancy clothes and boots that will fit each of you. They might have the parades and stuff again someday."
"You got sparkly clothes like they wore in the Pioneer Day parade back in Texas?"
"I don't know if they're the same kind of 'sparkly' clothes that you've seen, Lexi, but some of them have rhinestones and sequins and stuff on them."
"I wanna see!"
"Mom, are my old riding costumes in the attic or out in the barn?"
"In the attic, Sherrie. Why do you ask?"
"Abby has her own horse and they share another horse, so I thought they might like some riding clothes."
"Fine. I'll hang a lantern from a rafter up there so you can see to dig through the boxes. The big stand mirror is also up there if you girls want to try things on. Jerry, you need to feed and milk the goats."
"That's Sherrie's chore."
"Normally, yes. Today she's finally talking about passing along her riding clothes from most of the past seven years, so I'll make that her number one chore today and you can fill in as needed."
"Yes, Mom."
Chapter 83 - Tuesday noon
"This tastes just like the bread we make."
"It should, Terry. It's the same recipe and I learned wood stove cooking from your Aunt Kate."
"I really like the apple slices with the chocolate powder on them."
"Abby, that was a happy accident."
"Accident?"
"Yes. Sherrie and Jerry were fixing a snack when they got to bumping each other. Sherrie spilled the chocolate powder on the counter; Jerry dropped some apple slices in it. Jerry won't ever let fresh fruit go to waste, so he tried a slice. When he went back for more, Sherrie also tried it and told me it was good. I tried it and had to agree. Now it's one of their favorite snacks."
Chapter 85 - Tuesday evening
"Grandpa, are we gonna be helping you with the cooking every meal?"
"Only if you want to eat, Terry. Mister Gene helps some with the cooking, but I think we all miss your Aunt Kate."
"She's just gonna be cooking for her and Uncle Jack and Lexi?"
"Most families only cook for themselves."
"I guess us girls will be good cooks when we get married."
"You will have had the opportunity for a lot of practice - but so will Mike. No one complained about the cornbread he made yesterday."
~~~
"Get your pajamas on and brush your teeth and it'll be time for the adventures at Little House."
" Did the boys there learn to cook like the girls did?"
"Have we read about them cooking anything, Mike?"
"Not that I remember."
"Just keep you ears open as we go through the upcoming chapters."

Chapter 86 - Wednesday morning
"Grandpa, can I have a hug and sit in your lap?"
"Of course. You feel OK, Abby?"
"Un-huh, I just need a long hug."
"Bad dreams?"
"Weird dreams. People shooting at Mister Sam's house. Not any faces I know from church or Trade Day."
"What time of day did this happen?"
"We were eating lunch, maybe around noon?"
"I think we may change the route of the drive today to get to Sam's place well before noon and take up places outside. The hay doors on the barn overlook the back yard, there are several big trees on each side of the house and the tree house in the big oak out front has views of the house and the road."
"Tree house? I don't remember seeing one.
"It's well hidden in the tree."
"Can we play in it?"
"Not until I get there and tell you it's safe."
"OK."
~~~
"Abby, I want you and Mike to take your rifles today as the dog drive will go by Sam Green's house and you should be ready in case any animals elude the drivers and hunters."
"That house isn't brick. Is it safe if someone shoots at it?"
"If you're away from the windows. It has Skousen walls that are close to bulletproof."
Chapter 87 - Wednesday noon
"OK, Lady. The truck is gone so I know it's just you and the two kids. You and the girl come out now or we'll come in after you."
"You're wrong twice. There are more people here and they're armed. The house is bulletproof. If you start shooting, you'll start dying."
"Big words, Lady, but there are five of us and we're coming in."
"You've been warned. Kids, remember what Bill Mason said: stay out of the line of sight of any window. If they start shooting, you shoot back."
"Yes, Mrs. McNabb."
"Something to get your attention, Lady. Here's some 12 gauge buckshot."
Boom!
"Bubba, that shoulda tore a hole in the wall but it didn't. What kinda house is this?"
"I don't know, Chuck, but I'll try my AK."
Pop!
"Chuck! Chuck? Talk to me Chuck! Where's they get a silenced sniper rifle?"
"Sniper rifle? I gotta see!"
"Get down, Sherrie!"
Bang!
"Ow! That hurts!"
"Shut up and get down!"
Pop!
"Bubba, are you hit?"
"You men behind the poplar trees and the wagon. You're out numbered and out gunned. Put down your weapons and come out with your hands on your heads,"
"Who died and left you in charge?"
"I'm Bill Mason, the elected County Manager. I'm in charge by the vote of the people. Come out with your hands on your heads or I turn the snipers loose again."
"You ain't got no snipers, just some lucky shots. I only see two of you, so we're good for a fight."
"Shoot when they raise their weapons."
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
" Don't shoot!"
"Why not?"
"I'm their hostage."
" Drop your weapons and show yourself. Remember that you are under multiple guns."
"I can't drop the rifle. My hands are taped to it. I'll back out with my hands in the air."
"Jason?"
" Dad?"
"Alex, you didn't say anything about Jason being missing."
"I didn't know he was until just now. If I had a working phone, I'd be checking on all my kids every day."
"You need me for anything, Jason?"
"No, Doc. I have a few bruises but that's about it."
"When you get the tape off, check for any cuts or scratches that broke the skin. Remember that we have limited antibiotics to fight infection so keeping wounds clean is the best treatment. I heard a young-sounding 'Ow' from the house, so I'll go see if I'm needed there."
"What do you want to do with the bodies, Bill?"
"Sam, it's your place. You want to start a Boot Hill here?"
"No, but there's a gully down on the south side that I've been planning to fill in. They'll be one less load of dirt that I have to move."
"Carl, check their pockets for ID or valuables, collect their weapons, load the wagon and go dump them where Sam shows you. I want to check on my grandkids."
~~~
"Grandpa!"
"Are you kids OK?"
"All but Sherrie. Somebody said 'sniper rifle' and she just had to see what was out there. I told her to stay down and pushed her head down but the rest of her didn't go down. She was walking with a limp so I don't think it's real bad. Doc and Mrs. McNabb took Sherrie into her bedroom to check it out and get her jeans that don't have a hole in the seat."
~~~
"Bill, we've identified the shooters. They were all that's left of the rogue MAG that was near Gene. They surprised Jason when he was getting a rock out of his horse's hoof and he didn't have a free hand to reach for his gun."
"Where's his horse, Alex?"
"Out behind the barn."
"How's Jason?"
"I'll ask Doc to check a couple of cuts and the knot on his head, but he seems to be OK - other than mad at himself for being caught off guard."
"If it hadn't been for Abby's 'weird' dream, we'd have been caught totally off guard about the situation here. I still have no idea how the girls' dreams work, but I'm grateful for it every time it saves someone."
"I owe her for this one, also."
" Don't think so, Sam. It saved my grandkids and Mike, as well as Debbie and her kids. I think everybody wins and nothing is owed."
"I won't argue the point with you, Bill, but I may provide a reward in my own way."
"Not likely that I can stop you, Sam. You've been finding ways around me for years."
"I thought the goats were one of my better ideas."
"They were and they've been useful as a source of lessons for the grandkids - as well as having fresh butter on just-from-the-oven bread."
Chapter 88 - Wednesday afternoon
"Since it's time for lunch, everyone find a place to sit while I get things together."
"That's not necessary, Debbie."
"Yes it is, Bill Mason. Once again you're just in time when needed. Lunch is definitely on me."
"Mrs. McNabb, since Sherrie's hurt, we can help."
"Thank you, girls - on second thought I guess that's thank you girls and boys, since Mike and Jerry also lined up to wash their hands. Would you kids like to eat in the tree house?"
"Can Sherrie climb up like that?"
"If you can do it with one arm, Terry, I can do it one step at a time. Somebody take this pillow I'll be sitting on."
~~~
"Uncle Sam, I'm sorry."
"About what, Sherrie?"
"I'm the oldest kid and I was useless today. I couldn't help with shooting back and I didn't listen about staying down. Can you teach me to use the rifle you gave me?"
"We'll see how you feel in the morning and decide what to do from there. If you're OK on OTC medication..."
"OTC?"
"Over the counter - medications that don't require a prescription, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and some others."
"I just learned a new abbreviation that I probably won't ever use. I'm sorry I was such a snotty little brat about the rifle when you gave it to me."
"As I was saying, if your hip isn't too stiff or painful, we can go to the range behind the barn tomorrow afternoon. If you're not up to shooting, you can still learn about gun safety and maintenance, and maybe how to keep from being a target. I think you've learned quite a few lessons today, Sherrie. Come here for a hug."
"I'm glad you still love me."
"You're family, so you're always loved. There are days when it's somewhat harder to like you. Remember the argument you had with your mother over that bikini you bought?"
"Well, what about it? I bought it with my money from babysitting!"
" Doc Wilson said you should try it on in front of a mirror before you decide to wear it."
"Mirror? I'll have a scar from the bullet?"
"Probably a big scar. The bullet plowed quite a groove in you. Doc Wilson is pretty good at stitching up people, but he's not a plastic surgeon and he has limited supplies and equipment. You may not want to mention this to many people. What do you think the kids at school would say about where and how you got shot?"
"Will Abby and the others keep it a secret?"
"Probably if you ask them nicely. They know what it's like to have people make fun of them because of things that happened that they couldn't control. Anyway, you're fortunate that the bullet only hit meat and not bone."
"What if it had hit bone?"
"You probably wouldn't be walking now and you could have been using crutches or a cane in the future."
"I shoulda listened to Abby when she said 'Get down!' and pushed my head down."
"Think where the bullet might have hit you if she hadn't pushed your head down."
"I think I'm gonna be sick."
"Here's a bucket, unless you feel up to walking to the toilet."
" Doc Wilson said I should walk some, but slowly, so it heals properly."
"You do want to keep it in motion some, but not so vigorously that you pull out the stitches. I saw you getting both feet on each step going up to the tree house. I think that's a good start."
"I'll work on it."
"I'm sure you will."
"And I'll say 'Please' when I talk to Abby."
"I think you may have grown up some today."

Chapter 89 - Wednesday evening
"I heard that you kids had some excitement today."
" Dad, some people were shooting at Mister Sam's house and we shot back. Well, Abby did most of the shooting that stopped people, at least until they decided to shoot at Mr. Mason and the other dog hunters. All the shooters are dead and Mister Alex's son Jason was rescued from being kidnapped. Sherrie didn't get down fast enough when the bad guys were shooting at one of the windows and she got shot, but Doc Wilson sewed her up and she'll be sore but OK."
"And we had some fun stuff for lunch. Mrs. McNabb does things like the Ants on a Log that Grandpa showed us how to make."
"McNabb, Terry?"
"She was here for cooking lessons last week, Mister Gene. Her bread tastes just like ours."
"She was a very interesting person. She and her kids live with Sam?"
"He's her brother."
~~~
"Abby, do you think Mister Gene has a thing for Sherrie's mother?"
"Lexi, we said she was a good cook and Mister Gene isn't. Remember he took the cooking class."
"Well, If Dad did marry her, at least I'd have a brother close to my age so we could keep Sherrie from running over us."
"But you'd be kinda far away."
"That's true for someone who's walking, Abby, but you have a horse."
"So I do."
Chapter 90 - Thursday morning
"Will you get all the dogs today, Grandpa?"
"No, Terry, we won't get them all. Even with four days of driving and shooting, we will probably get less than 90% of the feral dogs and other animals."
" Does that mean we still need a grown-up with us when we go outside?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so. We'll do this again in the late fall and with knowledge of where their dens have been, perhaps we can destroy some of the places they wintered in to cut down the number of animals that survive the winter and reproduce in the spring."
Chapter 91 - Thursday noon
"Looks like a good day, Sam. I counted 37 animals in the back of your truck."
"Bill, you can add to that the half dozen I dropped off at each of three farms on the way here." "With 53 animals in this section, we know where the greatest concentration is. That will help us plan for the fall dog drive."
"We also need to plan how we'll destroy nesting sites so the ones that are left don't survive the winter."
"I have some ideas on that. They need more work before we try to implement them, so I'll be working on that over the summer."
"Along with power, mail, and whatever other things you've thought of."
"True."
"Very good, Arnold. I'm looking forward to another well executed mission."
"We're here to serve, but there aren't enough of us to do all the sorting that this will require."
Chapter 94 - Friday morning
"Why are you here, Aunt Kate? I thought this was your honeymoon."
"It was, but your Uncle Jack is needed for the train trip to the warehouse today, so I'm staying here with Lexi. I also thought you might need some help with baking for Trade Day."
"We need more flour ground and we need to bake a lot of stuff. Grandpa and Mister Gene got the firewood cut to size yesterday and we've got the lists of what people wanted so we know how much of what to bake. But you always baked some extra and we almost never brought any back home with us. How'd you know how much to fix?"
"Good question, Abby. I made note of how many of each type of baked good that we sold and a I made a list of what was asked for that we didn't have. From experience, I know that about half of the 'askers' will actually come back, so I bake enough extra to provide for the 'askers' and a few more. If we wind up with a couple of extra loaves, I can either trade them for something we need or bring them back for the family."
"You're smart, Aunt Kate."
"I get it from you kids. Every time one of you hugs me, some of your smarts rub off on me."
"You sound just like Grandpa."
