but the combination of a continuous release Rx pain med patch and 75 tablets of hydrocodone for the month have my chronic pain reduced part of the time and when I saw the PA this week he said we're on to try the next level up of that Rx patch (have the prescription in hand). The thing I don't want to jinx is that my muse has given me almost 10,000 words of a new story in 8 days. That means I've had four 2000 word days and the other days have interleaved additions and corrections to get to that total. No, it's not ready for posting - I've had too many times when my muse just left in the middle of a tale for me to start posting until I know I can complete it.
No promises, because I've learned that my body is sensitive to rain and thunderstorms and we have that in today's forecast and for several more days in the next week :-( However, I'm being positive and hoping the next level of continuous Rx pain med will have me NOT running to the bottle of chemical relief every few hours and maybe sitting in place long enough for a chapter a day - that would be better than I've had since "I Hate Being Old" suddenly flowed from my fingers. While I have the Rx forms in hand, the effective date is still more than a week out so I won't know if there's the amount of improvement I'm hoping for until about two weeks out: it usually takes two or three days for a new patch to reach its maximum effectiveness.

Follow up -
Some improvement but - a lot of my commentary on Rx pain meds has a "but" in it :-(
The better half has commented that I'm "more mobile" so there is some improvement from the continuous relief patch but I'm still falling back on the hydrocodone/acetaminophen daily. Does that mean I'm eligible for the next higher dosage level of the weekly pain patch? We'll see.
Yesterday was the worst possible case where I take a larger than usual dose of the hydrocodone and go to bed with my body in the most-likely-to-find-relief position for several hours until I get relief (or get up for more Rx pain med and go back to bed to wait). That's the third event of its kind in 2 years with the pain too great to sit down anywhere or lie down in any position other than the one I found experimentally more than a year ago. But two hours after the pain eased and I got up I was back for another high dose of Rx pain med and back in bed :-( Haven't had a repeat of the excruciating pain in the same day before so that's a new item to discuss with the doctor in two weeks.
I keep a daily log of where it hurts, how much, how long and how much Rx pain med (and other things, such as ice packs) I use and that is sent to the PA every week so they can be almost current with my ststus.
Anybody got a spare back available? Current body was 5' 10" before age and learning weighed it down to 5' 9" and spread the feet out a shoe size and a half (not weight gain - I'm about 20lbs less than my average weight of 10 years ago). I just keep absorbing knowledge and it adds to the load on my back...

I've considered inversion but the PA didn't think it would help my problem. Also don't have a place to put one that doesn't require using stairs to get to it and stairs can sometimes trigger more pain.
Traction was part of the PT before the surgeon did the first spinal fusion surgery (about 15 years ago) but it didn't help then so I'm not optimistic about it helping now. On the other hand, I usually find little to be optimistic about for several days after one of the forced-to-bed-by-pain events :-( I'm too much attuned to every jot and tittle of back motion while expecting it to knock me down again...
However, we both enjoyed the DoorDash meal one of the kids sent because the better half had wrist surgery this week ;-)

That was nice of them to do that for the two of you.
I hope you and your wife improve soon.
