During the truck ride, Jason tried talking with her. She drank some water, ate only a little food and was quiet during the drive, her mostly looking out the window as the scenery passed by. When he was 5 minutes out, he called the doc and let him know. Arriving, he backed into the open garage doorway and watched it close in front of him. That way no outsiders could see who was getting out of the vehicle and the woman would be closer to the doc on that side. The doc and his nurse wife was waiting as they got out. Jason gave a quick rundown of what happened. They ushered the woman into the room and his wife started examining her while the doc took a look at his bullet wound on his arm. Doc said it was more of a surface grazing wound cutting into the flesh about ½ inch. Jason told him it was from a run in with a gang on government land. Upon hearing that, doc immediately dialed the MS with the Spec Op and told him. Doc told Jason there would be a group here soon.
Doc's wife had got the woman to talk some, finding out there seemed to be no physical serious injuries but she had been abused many times by all the men that had captured her, often at the same time. The wife got the woman into a shower to clean off the grime and abuse of her body. Doc said they would run tests for STDs and pregnancy, then follow up tests in 45 days for the same. The MS and the 4 Spec Op soldiers showed up and debriefed Jason. They said he had lived through his 1st combat with only a small wound. They asked him if he remembered where the bodies were and Jason showed them the GPS coordinates. MS dispatched the 4 soldiers to go “sanitize” the area and make sure there was no evidence of Jason or the woman. Jason's wound had been re-bandaged by the doc, the woman was done with her shower, dressed in a hospital gown and poking at some hot food the wife had put in front of her.
Jason said he was leaving now and heading home and getting some sleep. The woman had a panicked look on her face and said “no.” Jason was confused, the doc said this was a common thing, he had saved her and she viewed him as her protector. Jason said he would spend the night, sleeping here and then make decisions in the morning, which was only a few hours away. Jason snoozed some in a chair while the woman laid on a cot. He saw her raise her head and check on him every 30 minutes or so. The wife had them some breakfast, Jason ate, but the woman barely ate, pushing it around on her plate. The wife said she would go get some clothes and things for the woman, Jason handed her his credit card to pay and also told her to also put the doc service charge on it. Doc spoke up and said there was no charge for their own people. Jason let that sink in, that he was considered part of them.
The soldiers got back about the same time as the wife. The woman finally had some clothes and shoes that fit. The soldiers told Jason that was one smooth move he did, letting the bodies for the pigs. They had erased what little sign there was of him and the woman. But they still rubbed it in that he had forgot the rule about checking for other threats before rushing in. He had lived, but would have a scar as a reminder of his mistake. Next time he may not be as lucky. Jason wanted to get home and the woman still wanted to go along. He laid it out to her, that he lived way back in at a place that didn't have a lot of luxuries and only 2 sparse bedrooms. That he worked in a gun business, raised crops and livestock. She simply said “OK” and got in his truck. Jason looked at everyone with a dumbfounded looked and they just shrugged.
When he arrived home, she looked around at the isolation. She got out and followed him inside his home. He showed her the spare bedroom and it was as said, a twin size bed and a nightstand. Jason turned and headed to the kitchen, getting out things for supper. She said she would cook. He found out she was a good cook. Meal over, he said they could sit on the porch for the evening. Grabbing 2 glasses full of mint ice tea, they went out and set on the chairs. Watching the sunset, he said that she knew his name, what was her name so he could call her something other than “hey you.”
She said she was Barb. He asked if she wanted to contact family, with a distant look, she said they were dead. They had been camping when the gang had attacked them. The gang shot her dad and brother right away, then abused her grandma, mom and her. They then shot the grandma and mom and took her along. She had been a prisoner with them for 6 days before Jason had rescued her. They had repeatedly abused her every day, often all of them at the same time. They constantly mocked her and told her how her Christian God was useless and they were taking her to a brothel in Mexico. That she was age 20, a conservative Christian and had never been with a man before, she was waiting til she married. Now she was defiled and worthless. Jason said that it was not her fault, that she had not willingly laid down with the men, that from the 2 black eyes and welts on her face, that she had fought against them. That did not make her defiled and worthless. He told her she could rest up a few days until she figured out where she wanted to go, he would help her get there. Barb said she had nowhere to go and no one to be with, she wanted to stay at his place.
Jason's eyes went wide in panic at that statement. He said he was age 33 and it had been years since there was a woman anywhere near him, let alone staying at his place. That he had been engaged to a woman, abstaining from sex before marriage, then on his wedding day, finding out that she had been having sex with an old banker many times. That he had walked away and then ended up here. And she could see there was no luxuries here and he didn't want any of that. She insisted that she wanted to stay and would help out where she could and do all the cooking and cleaning. Reluctantly he told her that they could try it, right now he needed to put the livestock to bed. She followed him around as he checked the livestock and crops. Inside, he told her there was clean towels for the bathroom and there was a lock on the inside of her bedroom door, he would see her in the morning.
Coming out of the bathroom heading for bed, she saw him sitting in the living room reading. Then saw he was reading a KJV bible. She knew then that his praying over the meal at supper and thanking God for it was not an act. She smiled and relaxed, feeling she was safe here with him. She slept soundly that night.

A few days later, Jason got a call from doc, asking him to bring Barb to his place about the tests that were done. Barb was quiet the whole trip to doc's place and walked woodenly into the room. Doc and his wife were there and she came to stand next to Barb. Barb had a very scared look on her face. Doc told her the pregnancy test was negative, Jason and the nurse steadying her as she sagged in relief. Doc told her he would retest in 45 days as this 1st one was close to her abuse and may not show anything yet. Barb was shaking. Doc told her the STD tests came back, she had 2 different ones. They were both completely curable with several rounds of shots. She fainted and Jason caught her, carrying her to the exam table and laying her down. The wife revived her in a few seconds with smelling salts. Barb sat up crying.
Doc's wife had been able to get her calmed down after the doc and Jason left the room. Then the wife / nurse administered the needed shots and told her when to come back in again. When Barb walked back out to Jason, she was pale but steady on her feet. Jason thanked the doc, then led the way out to the truck and opened the door for her. Once they were both inside the truck, he told her they were going shopping to get her several changes of clothes, then get something to eat. She protested but he said she needed the things.
At the store, she picked out 3 long skirts and 3 feminine shirts, 2 pairs of tennis shoes and a pair of muck boots. At his raised eyebrow, she said the boots were for wearing when she was in the fields or barn tending livestock. Jason told her he would give her privacy while she got undergarments and other things, he would wait at the checkout counter for her. He paid for the things and they got in the truck. She said she only wanted some takeout food and then to get back to his place. He used the drive thru at a fast food joint, even knowing he would be having loose bowels from eating their “food.”
During the next week, Barb was doing work around the home and farm. Barb wanted to do the work as “payment” for her staying. Jason definitely liked her cooking, it was far better than his own. She was squeamish the 1st few times she tended the pigs but loved the chickens and collecting the eggs. Jason had her wear gloves to use the hoe in the garden. She enjoyed the taste of fresh vegetables. They would sit on the porch in the evenings, discussing the day as they watched the sun go down.
As time went on, she saw his business was good even with it being way out in the boonies. She also noticed the Spec Op soldiers dropping by on a regular time. Jason told her they were friends and stopped by to talk about guns and stuff. They didn't try hiding the talks from her, she listened in and was shocked / amazed by what she heard. None of it matched what she had ever heard on the TV news nor even in the church she had attended. All the church had taught her was that true Christians would be prosperous and never see any health problems or bad times. Barb asked herself if that meant she wasn't a Christian because she had been abused by 4 men over several days. She thought she was but according to what the church taught, how could she be a Christian and suffer such bad things. In her mind she was struggling over that. Jason could see she was struggling with something and after some coaxing she told him. Jason told her that he was no bible expert but it seemed like most of the men of God written about in the bible had suffered hardships and were not rich men. That even Jesus lived a simple life and had bad things happen to him. So he had no idea where churches got the idea that Christians were always prosperous and had an easy life. Expect that maybe churches preached that to get more people in the doors and more in the collection plate. That caused Barb to stop and think. The preacher hardly ever had them turn to a passage in the bible and she couldn't remember being encouraged to read the bible on her own. It was always the preacher standing at the pulpit talking for an hour.
At times she could see that a soldier had a bullet wound, she knew that something was going on in the government lands. At the 45 day mark, Jason took her back to the doc for her STD and pregnancy test. Barb told the wife that she had her monthly cycle since but the wife said it was better to do the test and be sure. Barb would have the results in a few days. She was called back to the doc for the last of her shots to cure the STD's that she had. The test results showed her free of STDs and negative on being pregnant. She was crying with happiness when she came out of the office. Jason said he assumed she was clear of everything and she nodded yes.
Again they grabbed a bite to eat before heading home. This time they got some food at the grocery store and ate at the local town park. He didn't want to be sitting on the “throne” again all day like he did from the last fast food they ate. While eating, he started a discussion. He told her that the Winter months would soon be upon them and even though he had a snowplow for the truck, there would still be times that the snow was so deep or icy that he would be snowed in for several weeks. Sometimes the satellite internet service would be out because of storm clouds blocking the signal, phones down and electricity out. So snowed, in little contact with the outside world, using an outhouse and taking sponge baths. That if she wanted to leave before that started, she had best make plans and he would see she got to where she wanted.
Barb sat there for a few minutes thinking while she watched the ducks swim on the small pond the town park surrounded. Looking at Jason she said that she had no one to go back to, that she knew she was safe at his place. He told her that if she was sure, he needed to get enough food in for the 2 of them and other supplies. Plus she would need cold weather clothing which they could pick up since they were already in town. Leaving town headed for home, his truck bed was full but the 2 of them should have enough to make it through the Winter.
Several weeks later the 1st snowstorm of the season swept in and dumped 2ft on them. The phone and electricity was out for 3 days. Barb took it in stride, read some books and watched Jason work in his store. She was amazed at the attention to fine details that he did. Then the temperature warmed up and the snow melted off except for patches in the shady areas. Then the Spec Op soldiers stopped in but there was only 3 of them.

After they were seated and everyone had an ice tea, Jason asked where the other guy was. He was told that he had been killed in a battle. They had been out tracking another group coming through the government land, engaged them and suddenly a helicopter had showed up. They assumed the government agent traveling with them had the helicopter “on call” and waiting. The Spec Op soldier had come under fire from the helicopter and the 1st pass had killed the soldier with machine gun fire. The 3 remaining soldiers had been able to take out the helicopter with a shoulder fired rocket and then finished off the rest of the group. They told Jason he had probably seen it in the news about a military helicopter crashing during a training exercise.
The soldiers said there were now more groups coming through, 2 or 3 groups every day. The governments, both Federal and State, were using social media to push for people to voluntarily take in these “poor refuges” and let them live in their homes. The soldiers said that scuttlebutt had it that it would soon be made mandatory for people to do this. That government agents would come to people's homes, inspect it and then tell them how many refuges they would have to take in and house. Both Jason and Barb sat there with their mouths hanging open in disbelief at what they just heard. Living in the USA, the land of the free, and it has fallen so far that people would be required to house the people that planned to destroy them. And the thought that most people would willingly go along with that, thinking it was them doing a charitable deed to help out the poor needy refuge.
Then they dropped the big bombshell on Jason. They told him that all gun stores would be put out of business by next year. The government was planning on rescinding all FFL and thereby closing the stores because they couldn't legally do business then. People would not be able to buy ammo. Sure there would be a black market develop for selling ammo but the government already had plans for that. The government would sell the people bad ammo that would blow up their guns, causing injuries or death. That way people would be fearful of buying ammo on the black market. It would work because most people only had 20 rounds or less of ammo for their guns.
They talked long into the night about what was going on and what could be done. Barb sat there in stunned silence, listening to what was being said. They only stopped for some quick food. The soldiers made some suggestions, Jason listened. They also said that they would be bringing more out to cache. The next day they left after a quick breakfast. After they left, Jason and Barb looked at each other. He had a thoughtful look on his face and she had a scared look on her face. She realized she was “no longer in Kansas” and this was just adding to everything she had been through and hadn't been aware of during her life.
Over the next few days, they continued with normal life, tending livestock and running the business. Jason was doing a lot of praying about what to do, he didn't want to just jump into things, this was going to be another life changing situation like when he found out Rita was being unfaithful, walked out of the wedding ceremony, ended up disowning his parents and starting a new life. This would be same thing, the business he had studied for and built up over the years would soon be gone. The farm and everything was paid for and he still had plenty of money in the bank but would it still be available to him as a conservative man. He was formulating plans.
On the 3rd day he sat down with Barb. He told her that if she wanted to leave, he would pay her expenses to wherever she wanted to go, that things were getting rough and would get much worse. That staying at his place, her life would be in danger. Barb's life had been turned upside down. Her family had been killed, she was kidnapped, abused and was going to be sold into slavery to a brothel. She had been taught that only happened in 3rd world countries, not here in the US. She had been taught that government – Federal and State – were elected people who looked out for the well being and to do good. Then to hear that the US and State governments were working together to destroy the nation, it was unsettling. It was like that movie she had watched called “The Matrix” where people lived in fantasy land and now she was pulled out of the machinery and awake. She looked Jason in his eyes for about 5 minutes, thinking of what he had done for her and drawing strength from him. Then she said she wanted to stay and help him.

Jason's plan was to close his business in 2 months on December 31. In the meantime he would sell off all his store guns and inventory. But he would buy more ammo, parts and accessories to store away. He would pay the State sales tax as if the products were sold to customers. He would also buy food, clothing and etc to store in the root cellars he had built. He put notice on his store website that he was closing and taking no new orders. His gun action inventory was just a few left in preparation for end of the year tax season so that would work to his benefit. He asked Barb if she was willing to learn to shoot a gun, after a moments thought she said yes. So he got busy ordering things which would be delivered to an in town receiving warehouse where he would take his truck and trailer to pick it up. He had thought about taking his truck and going to pick up the ammo in person but thought better of it since snow could come at any time and he could be caught in a snowstorm.
The Spec Op soldiers had seen his notice on his website about closing and they showed up along with the MS. The Master Sergeant asked if there was anything they could do to help him. Jason told them he could use an AK47 full auto with a milled receiver and a full auto FAL along with 100 magazines for each one. The MS smiled and said that they could do that, they had recently “acquired” 2 guns like that from some people that no longer needed them. The MS said they also had some other things set back for him when his store was officially closed and no longer subject to ATF inspections. They would bring the 2 guns and magazines at the same time. Jason was planning on modifying both guns for select fire – semi and 3 rd burst. He would also give them the same standard treatment of taking them apart, truing them up and polishing the parts so they were smoother and operating correctly. Guns made for battle were even more notorious for being made with more sloppy tolerances than commercial guns.
They made trips to the warehouse to pick up the supplies that had been delivered. Then they packaged it and stored in the root cellar. There was now enough food, clothing and supplies for both of them for 3 years. Jason was finishing up all his outstanding gun business and another gun business bought his remaining rifle actions. He started teaching Barb how to shoot. He taught her the gun safety rules and proper shooting techniques. Then moved her into the shooting positions. He was careful when he had to touch her to guide her in shifting because he noticed she stiffened up at his touch. He made sure he was telling her first before touching her arm.
December 31 rolled around and it was the last day of his business. He would be closing permanently at 6PM. At 10 AM two ATF agents showed up, demanding to have his record log of firearm sales. He told them that unless they had paperwork closing him down before the end of his business day, they would have to wait til then, also he would need a signed receipt for his record logs as having been received by them. Jason turned off the heat in the store and opened the windows to allow the 25F air in and sat there with a smile on his face as he listened to the radio reports about the incoming snowstorm of 10 inches of snow due to start at 4PM. The 2 ATF agents stood there staring daggers at him for an hour dressed in their business suits, then gave in to the cold and went to sit in their heated car until he closed at 6PM. At the exact time of 6PM, they came back in, Jason videoed them receiving the log books and had them sign a paper stating they had picked up the records. At 6:15PM he watched them drive away in the swirling snow as he closed and padlocked the business door, officially out of the gun retail business. With the snowstorm, it took the ATF agents til 11AM on Saturday morning.
ATF agents set up watch over his closed store, stopping in and checking over the next 30 days as the weather allowed. By February they gave up. Shortly after that the MS showed up with a wooden trunk in the back of his vehicle. Jason grunted as he lifted 1 end of the trunk and they carried it inside, placing it on the living room floor. Jason and Barb watched as the MS opened the trunk, revealing several items. He pulled out an AK47, handing it to Jason. It was a good one made with a milled receiver and was capable of full auto fire. Laying it aside, Jason next took the FAL handed to him. It was original military issue, not an aftermarket production. They both barely looked used. Also there were 100 magazines for each rifle and each magazine was fully loaded with ammo. There were 2 sets of night vision googles and extra batteries. Grinning, the MS lifted the false bottom out of the trunk revealing a pristine M60 along with 50 linked belts of 100rds of ammo. There were also 12 hand grenades bundled at 1 end of the trunk. With a grin Jason said that everything in here ought to be enough to get a life sentence in a maximum security prison if they caught him with this. The MS chuckled and Barb was standing there with her mouth hanging open. Then she asked when could she shoot the AK47.
Over the next few weeks, Jason worked on the AK and FAL, truing them up and making them into semi and 3rd burst instead of full auto so they would be more controllable than full auto. Jason made sure he and Barb only fired them in semi auto mode only. She liked the gun, it being a shorter stock and lighter recoil. He had worked the guns so that they would reliably feed soft point ammo. He had stockpiled 50,000rds of Federal 7.62x39 123gr soft points for the AK and 100,000rds of Federal 308 150gr soft points for the FAL. When he was done, both guns would consistently group at 1 ½ inches at 100yds.
April 1 had a brand new vehicle pull into his place. He didn't recognize it. There looked to be several people inside it.

As people were getting out of the vehicle, Jason yelled that the business was closed months ago. Then he got a look at the 4 people – his dad, mom, Rita and the old banker. He halfway drew his GP100 from his holster before letting it drop back in. With anger in his voice he yelled “what were they doing here.” Barb heard the commotion and came to the doorway to see what was going on, holding the AK out of sight. She heard them say that since they were his parents and he knew Rita and the banker, he had to help them. They had trouble at home and needed some guns worked on so they could protect themselves.
Jason looked at them. All he could see in his mind was his parents looked like a “Kevin and Karen.” The banker looked older and pudgier and Rita, well she had put on at least 80 pounds of weight, her face had more coats of “paint” than a lot of old barns and she was wearing designer clothes that were 2 sizes too small and lots of jewelry. His dad said they had guns that needed worked on, as he reached inside the vehicle. When he turned back around with several cases in his hands, he was staring at Jason who had pulled his GP100 and had a solid Weaver stance pointing at his dad.
His dad turned pale, then screamed how dare he point a gun at his dad. Jason said he had every right to distrust them and was within his rights to shoot them where they stood if they made 1 wrong move. By now, all 4 were pale and the banker even had a large wet spot on the front of his pants. His dad told him to let them show him what they had and needed done. He knelt and opened the cases then stood back up. Jason told him to step back away from the guns, that if any of them made a move to pick a gun up, he would start shooting. They stepped back and his dad began telling him what he had to do for them. Jason saw a very cheap AR15 normally sold by the big box stores, it didn't even have a forward assist. Next was an old pump shotgun in what looked to be 20G. Lastly was a mini Uzi. Jason made sure he went nowhere near the guns and definitely no touching them to let his fingerprints on them. His dad was saying that Jason had to convert the AR15 and mini Uzi to full auto and the shotgun was to have its barrel cut to 12 inches and the stock cut to just a pistol grip.
Jason laughed and said “NO!” That he was no longer in the gun business, that they needed government paperwork approving the work before any gun business would do it and even if he was still in business, he wouldn't do the work. That by coming to his place, they were in violation of the restraining order against them and they were facing felony charges for trying to get him to do the illegal work. His mom screamed at him that he was still a good-for-nothing loser and would never amount to anything. That he blew his chance when he didn't marry Rita, no woman would ever want him. Barb set her AK by the door, then with a smile on her face went out saying “Jason, now that these people are leaving, are you ready for lunch.”
The 4 looked up to see a beautiful woman about 15 years younger than Jason standing on the porch, dressed in a very feminine skirt. His mom then started screaming and Rita ran crying to the vehicle and got in, slamming the door. Jason told them all to leave, never to come back. The 4 left, putting up a dust storm from the dirt road. When they were out of view, Jason and Barb both started laughing. Jason thanked her for rescuing him by making them think she was his woman. Then they went about their normal day doing chores.
When his dad, mom, Rita and the banker got back to their home, ATF agents met them and debriefed them on what happened. Finding out their plan to entrap Jason failed, they scowled and left. They had wanted to catch him in something, then make a big public example of him to scare everyone else. That way other gun business owners and gun owners would be more fearful of the ATF. A week later, it was on the news that all 4 of them had been killed in 2 separate home break ins, no suspects found.
The Spec Op soldiers stopped in and requested some work done on some weapons. Opening the shop door, he turned on the power and lights. While doing the work, they talked. They had found out that all Special Forces of all branches were going to be dismantled by the end of the year. The soldiers would have the option of going back to the regular army or take an honorable discharge. Most of the Special Forces were saying they would take the discharge. The soldiers said they were taking the discharge and already were in the process of closing sales on property in the nearby area. The soldiers said that regular US Army was now being used to protect the “immigrants” coming in and the government mandate of being required to house these “immigrants” was going to be made public in 30 days.

Exactly 30 days later the Federal government made the announcement about persons having to house these “poor immigrants” because they had down trodden them for decades and the US people had to pay reparations to them in the form of housing, food and etc. There was a big social media push by the “talking heads” for the people to do it because they needed to do this. Jason and Barb would of thought it as a laughing matter but they saw many “Kevins and Karens” rushing to do it. Jason knew the government would be tied up in the cities first. He knew it was just a matter of time before it reached the backwoods of Appalachia. The Spec Op soldiers said there were only a few of the “immigrants” crossing through the government lands, the ones they saw were checking on their caches that the government had put in place for them.
It only took a few months before reports were being heard on alternate news that families were being attacked by the the “poor immigrants” they were housing. Reports of wives and daughters being savagely abused and the husband / dad and brothers being savagely beaten, bound and being made to watch the attacks. Of course there were no mention of these attacks on the mainstream news. Barb would have panic attacks when she heard of these stories, remembering her own attack. Then she would train harder with her AK, taking shots at different ranges offhand and doing magazine change drills with a determined look on her face. Jason had no doubt that any person posing a threat to her now would get a quick appointment with death.
The locals were growing closer as a group, ½ of them being ex Spec Forces or military and the rest having been raised in the area and their family going back generations. Both sides were teaching each other things to help. The locals had spent generations in learning how to move undetected through the woods in their quest in avoiding Revenuers and Game Wardens. They knew a lot about gardening and local plants for medicine and the soldiers taught them battle skills and the use of different weapons. The doc and some medics took care of most problems that were beyond the local skills. And the news of the Special forces being disbanded was causing the general public to cheer about getting rid of “those blood thirsty outdated barbarians.” They loved the idea of the new “woke and more nurturing” military and most military officers went along with it. They valued their careers and paycheck above their people under them and the oath they had taken to defend and protect the Constitution.
Barb had lived with Jason for 3 years now, helping out with all the work on his farm as they watched the US basically go insane and descending into a 3rd world country. She had learned a lot about how to plant and grow things, tend the livestock and many other skills. Barb had made it through several Winters of being snowed in and no outside contact and she liked it. She had grown as a Christian, Jason having held bible reading and studies several times a week. Jason and her had attended several weddings of the locals and her heart ached that she would never have that. Earlier this year, she had started looking on Jason as a desirable man but in her mind she was still a defiled woman and would not be someone he would look upon as a wife.
The crops and livestock were doing good as Summer rolled around. Independence day was coming up next week and there was a big shindig scheduled at Jason's place for that day. Everyone would be in attendance. Jason had a pig all picked out to roast, while other people would be bringing assorted dishes. She would be making coconut creme pie which she knew was Jason's favorite pie. Fireworks would even be set off towards evening.
Independence Day dawned dawned clear and sunny with temperatures going to be around 80F. The livestock had been tended and tables being set up. The pig was roasting, it was started last night with Jason and a few other men watching over it, taking turns slowly turning the spit while swapping tall tales. Barb looked out over the people in attendance, there had to be at least 120 people. There were singles, couples and families with children. All adults, men and women had guns slung over their backs and even most of the older teenagers had one. The talk of the day was how far the US had fallen and how the government was now pushing out into the rural areas to force them to take in the “immigrants.”
People had just sat down for the noon meal when “whumps” could be heard over the music being played by several people on their banjos and fiddles. The whump, whump, whump got louder and the soldiers yelled to scatter as 5 helicopters came into view in the distance. Barb could hear gun actions being worked all around her even as she was chambering a round in her AK. Jason was pulling her down behind a stack of firewood. The helicopters released several rockets and machine gun fire as they came in and then descended and hovered as 10 men got off each one. Then the helicopters took off. Barb could hear the sounds of gunfire, both from the locals and the enemy. The screams of wounded sounded over the noise. She was in a stupor fog, looking around seeing the carnage. Then she saw the partial body of a young boy about 8 years old laying on the ground with both the legs missing and a blank stare on his face as blood spurted from the stumps and his mom trying to stop the blood flow. She saw a young girl maybe age 3 running with ½ of her arm gone, blood flowing and then a soldier grabbing her and trying to apply a tourniquet.
Barb came to her senses as Jason shook her arm and then he continued to fire his FAL. Her training took over and her AK spat bullets, her seeing enemy go down from her shots. She barely recognized that there was several nationalities represented in the enemy. Then the helicopters made another pass, releasing more rockets and strafing the people, causing more deaths. Some of the soldiers had been able to make it into a root cellar that they had stored things in. They came out armed with some Stingers. Taking aim, there were 5 Stingers on their way. 3 explosions sent helicopters crashing to the ground, a 4th was spewing smoke and fire from its engine as it left, the untouched helicopter with it. In the distance they heard the 4th helicopter explode.
Jason sprinted for the house, Barb right with him. He grabbed the M60 from its hiding spot and 5 belts of ammo, Barb grabbing 2 more. Outside with them behind the firewood, he fed the 1st belt of ammo and worked the action. Aiming over the sights, he squeezed bursts off, sending streams of bullets into the enemy. Quickly they came under heavy fire even though the rest of the soldiers and locals were also shooting at the enemy. Jason continued firing, then hooking another belt of ammo to keep shooting. His M60 broke the back of the attack and soon the remaining enemy were all dead. Mop up and clearing the enemy began. Barb was down to 2 remaining AK magazines from the 12 she had started with. She smelled the blood, barely hearing over her eardrums ringing from the gunfire, the moans of the wounded and the wailing of the ones who had lost family. Jason was looking at her with a worried look on his face as he told her she had been shot. His hand touching the side of her head and coming back with blood on it. The last thing she remembered was the world spinning and the ground rushing up to meet her as she heard Jason screaming for a medic.

The Canadian smoke is really bad in my area today and the past several days. Everything looks like it has a haze / fog hanging over it. Bad enough to make my eyes tear up and you all don't want me to try writing with tears in my eyes, my writing is bad enough without the tears.

Barb woke up to find herself laying on her bed with Jason sitting on a chair near it and holding her hand. He said he was glad she was awake, then he realized he was holding her hand, putting it down he said he was sorry. She had a disappointed look on her face as she said she understood with her being a defiled woman, he wouldn't be interested after finding out his ex girlfriend had other men. Now Jason was surprised and said that was not it. That she had been attacked and did not willingly lay down with those men and lie about it like Rita did. That he has seen she is a wonderful woman and has proven she is a hard worker and trustworthy, but he had considered himself too old for her as he was 13 years older than her. Barb said he wasn't too old and she thought he was a wonderful honorable man, so he leaned in and planted a kiss on her willing lips.
Coming up for air, they became aware of the doc and his nurse wife standing watching and grinning. Then doc said if he could have a few minutes, he wanted to check his patient. Doc looked her over and examined his work. He told her that she had been shot but it was a grazing wound along her head. That they had to shave a strip of hair along her head so they could clean and then stitch her wound but her other hair would hang down over it to cover it while the hair grew back. Barb reached up and felt it, feeling a strip shaved about 1 ½ inches wide and going back along her head. She realized if the bullet had been an inch lower, it would of taken her ear off. Jason told her to get some more rest as he motioned the doc to go outside with him.
Jason asked if he was sure that Barb would be okay and doc assured him that she should be fine. Thanking the doc, he went on to find the Spec Op soldiers. Finding the MS, he asked about the causalities. The MS told him there were 50 enemy dead but it had cost them a high price for it. There were 5 dead and 20 wounded, some of them were children. That the area was being policed, weapons and supplies being gathered and tractors being used to pull the 3 downed helicopters to the edge of the fields where they would be stripped of all usable things. Jason asked the MS how they could of known. The MS said the most likely thing was the government had the attack group on standby and then used “real time” satellite video to see where they were gathered, then sent the team in. He told Jason that the attack group looked to be some of the “poor immigrants” and that nationalities represented were Chinese, Mexican, Russian, El Salvador and Saudi Arabia. There could be more but that was what they had identified so far.
Watches were set and maintained over the next 2 days as everyone stayed at Jason's place, only sending groups out to homes to get food and clothing. There was a mass burial for the enemy soldiers and then a lot of wailing as local causalities were buried at their homes. The hardest was burying the 2 children causalities, everyone took that hard. 4 Spec Op soldiers carried each litter bearing a child's body as their parents walked alongside. Each shovelful of dirt placed in the grave was like the stab of a dagger in the people's hearts. Barb was standing with Jason, leaning on him for support, tears running down everyone's cheeks as revenge filled their hearts and a determined look in their eyes, to revenge this act and stop this evil.
