Don't think you'll find many of these because you need two hands to handle the fabric/canvas/leather - nineteen twenty six Singer hand cranked sewing machine and a hand cranked machine for sewing heavy materialsTreadle machines you're more likely to see in all varieties because foot power coordinates well with hand usage. I learned machine sewing on my grandmother's Singer treadle machine. My wife's grandmother's Singer treadle machine is on the landing to the upper floor - complete with boxes of bobbins, needles and a spare round leather drive belt. Professional Leather and Canvas shops used and still use hand crank sewing machines for locations without power. The treadle sewing machines normally do not have the power needed to sew leather. When we bought out the old shoe shop they had 2 hand crank patch machines. There are still new hand crank sewing machines being made and sold for those who have a need. Using them is not that hard to learn as normally only one hand is needed to guide the material.

The leatherworker for our Harley dealer had a treadle machine she could sew through most anything.

Thanks for the update. I would think a hand crank sewing machine at times would need 2 people operating it.

Ran a leather/saddle shop for 35 years so I am sure that you know much more about sewing leather than I do. Conversation over have a nice life in your own special world.

Hand cranked sewing machines are still made: www.amazon.com/Butterfly-Semi-Industrial-Negrita-Machine-electricity/dp/B091V54MFY$235 and free shipping but that's for the head only - it needs a case or stand. The available used Singer hand cranked machines are mostly "portable" units in some type of wooden case and start at about $270 plus shipping and go UP from there: www.mercari.com/us/item/m13034596283/Or do your own search: hand cranked singer sewing machine Add the word leather or canvas or sail to your search to find the bigger machines - sailmakers have been doing serious sewing for centuries. Check out sailrite.com for what they have to offer - currently only electric machines.

I haven't found any other stores outside of MI that sell them (could be I just don't know of them). Since Meijer is a Michigan company - i assume that is why they have them in their out of state stores. I buy Koegel's at Meijer in OH.

Using them is not that hard to learn as normally only one hand is needed to guide the material. Is that because the leather has substance/ considerable stiffness?I built ambulances (small scale operation - maybe15-16/yr) & tried making Naugahyde covered cushions; thickish material but pretty soft and definitely not stiff. We had a Janome table unit and my problem was regulating material speed vs needle speed; never got it sorted. Fortunately I found a Mennonite lady who had commercial sewing experience. Made my life a ton easier

Chapter Five.
Artie’s Story.
Hey, wait a minute hold on when was this decided? Dan answers my question with “Just now, you are a born leader every time something happens you step up to the task. “ Gee, thanks pal. We have weapons that are reliable this was a better idea than taking the risk of the enemies weapons malfunctioning in combat plus the clean up team wanted them for some reason.
So, what next genius. I guess I need to talk to the General a bit and find out what he intelligence needs first. The general and I sit down and discuss what we know and how the enemy might be getting into the state. I suggest we start with the Upper Peninsula and watch the Wisconsin border and the great lakes. We will get a two day layover here while the motor pool goes over our vehicles and makes any needed repairs and up grades.
Amy’s Story.
We spend the rest of the day getting check out on our new weapons. I can see why so many nations use them. One thing I need is a magazine pouch i am currently using a day pack, I can see it will not be a convenient way to reload in fight.
I talk to Linda about making some mag pouches and she says making them would be no problem if she had the material. I ask the General if I can get a driver and vehicle to fetch some materials. He is very generous and tells me to put it on the Government tab. Linda and I go into Grayling and try to find some suitable material like ballistic nylon. We settled on some thick hog hide leather. Lina said her leather machine could handle it because she would have the men turn the crank. She made the pouches fit on a standard military pistol belt she even made pouches for the twins rifles.
The General’s Story.
I am meeting with Artie and Archie. I have a job for the group and hope they will take it. “Gentlemen, we have a report at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and I was hoping you would go take a look around.” Both men readily agreed so I gave them all unlimited and untraceable credit cards.
Archie’s Story.
Looks like we back on the road again, only this time we have a mission to stick our noses into a hornets nest. I ask Ben if he needs any ammo for Mosin or his 1895. He surprises me by saying he would like to learn how to reload. It really does make me happy to see the young folks take an interest in the old skills. I spend the rest of the day teaching him the basics of reloading and he learns fast. I also teach him about cartridge conversion since that is the main way to get brass for that old revolver of his. A good thing since tomorrow we are hunting invaders and traitors.
The Mechanics really worked over the vehicles. I now have a Military radio and a top end GPS system. They also put in weapons racks for our long guns. I check everything over before we leave just in case.
I talked with the mechanics and they all seem to be gear heads like me, one even wants to buy my truck and camper if I ever sell it. I tell him we have to win this war first. I check the trailer and make sure everything is ready to go. I don’t want stuff bouncing around in here while traveling.
Sharon’s Story.
My Honda is no longer recognizable, the Mechanics added some off road like stuff to it! Come on it’s a minivan not an tank. I got new tires that look like they belong an a Jeep or something. My suspension is way better or so they tell me. These guys have been watching too much YouTube.
Ben’s Story.
The Bus still looks the same but the Mechanics have checked everything over and put on new tires as well as a new awning. We are heading soon and who knows what trouble awaits us.

Yep done that too. Even wrote to them Those must be good hot dogs and sausages. Texican.... Oh they are good. All growing up, they were only available in Michigan. Besides the Meijer stores outside of MI, I'm not sure what other stores outside of that state sell their product. With that said - I'm still partial to their pickled ring bologna as one of my favorite products from koegels. I slice it and put on a cracker with some cheese and a shot of Franks Red Hot (I put that **it on everything, lol).

Chapter Six.
Artie’s Story.
Of course the girls are thinking of this as some kind of adventure and acting like secret agents or some such. We do not not to take them into a fight but fights have a way of not caring what we want and have found them already. This time they are a little better prepared to protect themselves.
We roll into the Maple Bay State Forest Campground for the night as is getting late. Like all of Michigan’s State Forest Campgrounds it has Vault toilets and hand pump. We get set up and I start a cook fire in the fire ring.
Janice’s Story.
We are having hamburgers over the campfire tonight and tomorrow we will drive over the bridge to the Upper Peninsula in the morning. We have been given new rifles so we can protect ourselves from the bad people trying to take over the world.
Joyce’s Story.
Uncle has told us to stay close by the camp tonight just in case there are bad guys lurking about. Since it is getting a little cold I am staying inside the camper after I eat my hamburgers. Before we left the truck stop I got to download a few movies to my tablet so I will have something to watch tonight.
Hiram’s Story.
I never dreamed that I would like camping at all. I was raised a city dweller but after this is over I will be doing more of it just for fun. I have been thinking about getting a tent that hooks up to the back of a vehicle like Sharon has. I am also thinking about a set up like Amy has that tent does look warm with the wood burner in it. In the morning we will be crossing one of the largest suspension bridges in the world The Mackinac Bridge known as the Mighty Mac.
Sharon’s Story.
I am getting tired and so is Artie and the girls I suggest that he goes and rest because we have a long haul tomorrow and morning will come early. I think I will do the same.

Now for hot dog chili sauce - The Tony Packo's chili sauce (from Toledo) is very good. I either buy a case when I go through Toledo from one of the Packo's restaurants or order it online (and if buying from the restaurant, well I also have to order a couple loaded chili cheese dogs to go along with a couple cabbage rolls). If ordering online - buying a case through Amazon (shipped from Packo's warehouse) is cheaper than buying a case through Packos website. Chapter Seven
Artie’s Story.
It’s early morning and I am up and punching some life into the fire started for coffee and breakfast. My injuries are bothering me a little but they will calm down once it gets a little warmer. I know what the twins will want hot cakes with fruit and a side of sausage. I get out my big griddle and my big cast iron skillet and let them heat up on the fire. Just as I get things started everyone else joins me at the fire.
Sharon’s Story.
Since Artie made breakfast us girls do the clean up. The nice thing about cast iron is it’s easy to clean. A little water add heat and wipe clean all done. Our plates and such are washed in a stainless steel bucket heated on the camp fire.
This was supposed to be a week of the DIY camping meet up, now we are fighting for our lives against what appears to be everyone else in the world. Now we heading out to scout out the enemy location in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. What can go wrong?
Hiram’s Story.
I have never seen let alone cross the Mackinac Bridge. It appears to go on forever. I can’t help but think that this would be a good spot for an ambush. I know it is supposed to be free of hostiles but that was yesterday and the situation is fluid. I am on pins and needles the whole time.
Grace’s Story.
I have always enjoyed crossing the bridge, my grand parents remember when it was built and were some of the first people to cross it way back in nineteen fifty seven. Midnight the cat is sleeping on the bed totally indifferent to the splendor around him.
Once we cross we gather for a planning session.

Chapter Eight.
Hiram’s Story
Artie, Ben and I leave our camp at the Ottawa National Forest. We drive up county road 519 and stop way short of the entrance. The plan is to walk up close and have Ben fly his drone around the campground so we can get a look at what is going on inside without entering.
Ben’s Story.
We have reached a point where I can launch my drone and I start getting video from it, we see some enemy troops in Hazmat suites loading containers into trucks. We need to send this video to the General and get out of here.
Artie’s story.
What ever is happening in there stinks on ice. It looks like the enemy is moving Bioweapons into place for an attack. This has now gone from bad to we may all die a grotesque painful death right here and now. it’s time to leave.
Hiram’s Story.
I contact the general and give the video and our location. He tells us to stay put we have confirmed the worst fears of the Intelligence Agencies and a plan is being put in motion. They are sending an Agent to meet with us at our camp. I confirm the order and tell the others that a plan has been put in motion.
Ben’s story.
I am so glad to be back with my wife and our cat in our home on wheels Gracie gives me an enthusiastic greeting and Midnight orders me to pick him up. I can’t believe that cat wants for attention after being with the twins all day. We tell the others what we saw on the video. Archie agrees with the general that it looks like a Bioweapon attack and we should all be careful.
Archie’s Story.
it’s getting on top supper time and I have a big pot of potato soup and cornbread cooking up good and thick. The Perfection stove and oven has once again proved it’s worth to me. About the time we are getting ready to eat a man pulls up on a motorcycle and introduces himself as Agent Phineas Horton US Intelligence. He is here to brief us on the plan and join our camp for a while.
