Chapter 36
Jack and Brad
January 12, 2023
As Jack approaches the gate he can see two men talking to Brad. The Kubota is on the inside of the gate and the gate is still locked. Brad must have gone through the man gate. Jack gets close enough to see that both men were on the pictures David had shown him. Since Jack knows these two are not here for any good reason he decides to get back to the site and get some firepower.
At the gate, Brad is just opening it with an assault rifle trained on him.
“We don’t need him,” he says as he draws his sidearm and prepares to shoot Brad.
Crack, a small hole in his forehead appears and he falls to the ground. The second man raises his weapon and is seconds from firing on Brad, another crack and the side of his head blows out. He falls to the ground with a thud.
Brad runs to Jack and whips out his pocket knife. He cuts Brads cuffs off and brushes them to the ground. Hey Forth, I just wanted to get some clarity on the continuity of what happens in this chapter. First, it looks like Brad is outside the gate because it is locked. he has to unlock the gate which seems to indicate that his hands are free. Later, it looks like there are cuffs being cut off him. When did he get cuffed? Also, Brad has an assault rifle trained on him. Then an agent draws his sidearm and prepares to shoot. Since there are only two at the gate, the other must have the assault rifle already trained on Brad. But then, the sidearm agent gets shot and the "assault rifle" agent raises his weapon. Didn't he already have the assault rifle trained on Brad? And finally, the last part is a little confusing. "Brad runs to Jack and whips out his pocket knife" implies that Brad whips out his pocket knife. "He cuts Brads cuffs off" just sounds a little weird since the previous sentence implies that Brad has the pocket knife. I know it sounds like I am picking knits and I apologize. I'm just trying to provide some help to make the chapter a little smoother for the readers. I am really enjoying the story. It is quite a bit more complex in the macro and micro level than anything I could every come up with. Thank you for your efforts. Sincerely, A.

Chapter 37
Brad, Hector and Cheryl
January 14, 2023
6:45 Am. Brad and Cheryl are sitting in the meeting room of Cascade Asset Recovery, Wilson is in his office and he has a big job for them. Hector should be here any moment. They are drinking coffee and eating bagels. Both scarce luxuries these days.
“Cheryl says, we didn’t see you on the weekend, what did you do?”
“Jack and I converted my old truck to propane on the weekend and he installed faraday cages on my solar panels. I really don’t believe we are on the brink of war but it is nice to be prepared, just in case. The kid really knows his stuff.”
Brad adds, “The whole family does. Jason did all the research on the faraday systems and jack is the resident wizard on propane conversions. He doesn’t even use a conversion kit. Everything he uses can be salvaged from steel scrap yards. Now that steel prices are so low, there are yards full of the stuff, almost worthless unless you are like jack and cam make working tools from scraps. I bet he could make a robot from a junkyard. Has he worked on your car yet.”
“Its electric but he helped Alana convert her smaller cube van over to propane and she is about to convert Alisha’s red sports car. We can still buy propane in Mt. Vernon but gasoline is only available for official use. Even diesel is only available for official use but Alana is able to get it for her big truck. We have now stockpiled about 1000 gallons of propane in Alana’s buried sea can. Jack also helped us shield our solar panels and vehicles.”
“What do you think is going to happen. David thinks Nuclear war is coming soon. I don’t know about that but certainly civil war. At least a third of the population is unemployed and guaranteed minimum income doesn’t even pay enough to survive let alone live at a reasonable standard. People don’t even riot anymore, they sit around stoned on that low-quality crap the government supplies. I hear it is even worse in the south.”
“I try not to think about it. I have a job, a place to stay, some good friends and some semblance of normalcy.”
“We need to think about it sometimes. We need to be prepared. If you go into some of the ghettos, it becomes all too real. You used to be a police officer, you were respected by most and you were generally safe. Now a uniform of any sort cannot go in without a squad of at least 4 or 5. We cannot ship in supplies or food without armed escorts. It is only a matter of time before it affects us.”
“That may be true but outside of always carrying my piece and staying out of areas I know are unsafe, there is not much I can do. Also, Alana and Alisha are the preppers. They have our house and survival shelter prepared. Did you know she built a tunnel under her yard from the house to the barn? She worked on it every night for a month. She siphoned a gallon of diesel from her truck every night for two months before that to get enough diesel for her tractor?”
“Well we have to be on guard all the time. Did you hear what happened at my campsite?”
“I saw the video. Alana captured it and recorded it before the government took it down. That was a government guy, why haven’t they come to investigate it?”
“There is two group of them according to David. The official UN group claims to not know who these thugs are and they wipe the evidence and put out their own stories hoping people will think it was fake news. They cannot question me or Jack because they don’t want to legitimize the account. Plus, they have no idea where Jack is. They will do a routine, unrelated investigation of me to make sure I don’t have any illegal weapons or contraband stuff like hoarded gas and food. They have the ability to look at satellite feed to determine if I have any hiding spots I haven’t told them about as well.”
“Don’t you think you are being a little paranoid?”
“I am sitting here talking to you because of that paranoia. 4 of them dead and 10 in custody because Jack and I were too paranoid. Were we not, he would be in illegal custody and I would be dead.”
“True. I just feels like your whole family is the same.”
“Actually, I am not family. Jessica is, I have known them my whole life though.”
Hector walks in and slaps Brad on the back. “Way to go son, 4 more traitors gone, that is how it is done. I bet nobody has even talked to you about it yet.”
“No, the army cleaned up the mess, took the rest into custody and they have done all the diplomatic stuff. Jack is in hiding on the base though, The Colonel thinks that he is a target. If they find out where Alisha is, they will go after her too and I know that Alana is under surveillance. I just wonder why they haven’t put 2 and 2 together and figured out that she is the girl staying at the house.”
“I have seen them around my place too. Jessica is pretty sure they won’t try to take her again because of the massive negative publicity blast last time. With the campaign to make it look like a massive fraud to discredit the United nations and the turmoil it must have caused in the leadership, they aren’t too quick to try again. They only watch her in hopes she will lead them to David and his crew. She just does her job with Sarah and stays out of trouble. It is pretty tight with only 1 paycheck coming in and Jessica and her mom only getting guaranteed minimum income. I hope we make some good credits with this one.”
Wilson comes in with a thick folder. “Here it is people. National wholesale foods. They close the doors in 2 days. We need to secure and protect the assets at the main warehouse. 220,000 square feet of non-perishable food and an additional 50,000 square feet of frozen food. They currently have a security detail of 12 at all times and at 12 noon one half of the security detail is supposed to take over. When they don’t arrive, and the entire crew finds out they have just lost their jobs it won’t be just the outsiders we need to protect against.’
“Are the Guards armed?” Asks Brad.
“They are.”
“So, why not let them each take a couple months worth of food and let them go. It would barely make a dent.”
“The client wants everything preserved. Nothing lost.”
“Who is the client? Asks Cheryl.
“an unnamed Trustee. They don’t care at all about the employees.”
“How many employees are in there?”
“This warehouse has over 500 employees who work 2 shifts. We would have to process and dismiss up to 250 people. They have received no notice so many will be tempted to take whatever they can carry.”
“Are the employees amongst the creditors? Will they get paid?”
“I don’t know, my papers only list the trustee. They will know about the disposition of the assets. Our job is to insure the assets are protected and legally distributed.”
Brad asks Wilson, “do we have enough manpower? They have 12 armed guards. We would likely need the same around the clock.”
Wilson responds with, “they have to guard it with 2 shifts of employees coming and going, we only need to guard it closed. Should be limited and infrequent access so I think we could do with half that. We have good people who can do it.”
Cheryl asks, “how long for?”
“Trustee thinks about two weeks before they start shipping product out. 7 days to empty after that. Building is already leased to the government and they will take the tenant improvements and appliances out or use them, I wasn’t told which.”
“Those things have value too, shouldn’t the creditors or the employees get that too?”
With a sigh, Wilson responds, “out of my hands, trustee is appointed by the courts and trustee gets to oversee the distribution of all assets. Doesn’t seem right to me either but I do not get a say.”
“Ok,” inserts Cheryl, “lets get to the logistics.”
Brad inquires next, “ok. 8 hour shifts or 12s with one of us always on as a roving extra.”
Pedro chimes in. “I like it. I can lead 1 team and Cheryl the other, you fill in.”
Wilson clears his throat. “Excuse me but it is not too busy with the repos anymore. I can take a regular shift. That would give two 12-hour crews. 1 of us can be in uniform and leading the security crews and a second in plainclothes, watching our backs. I suggest Pedro and I wear the uniforms since we are both Latino and blend right in and you two back up from the shadows”
“I like it says Brad. What is in the budget?”
“Enough and if we keep a lid on it with no losses, a pretty good paycheck and our crew could use a good paycheck as well.”
Next morning, Brad and Pedro are waiting in their car. They have driven around the business more than once and have noted all the entrances and exits. The parking lot is less than one quarter full but they know there is a full compliment of staff in there. 3 trucks have come and unloaded and are still in the loading docks. Several others have left and appear to be loaded. Business as usual.
At 11:45 Brad drives up to the main security gate and parks in front of the office. He gets out of the truck with his seizure documents and heads into the gatehouse. “Hi there, my names Brad Richardson,” he says as he hands his documents to the officer in charge.
“what do we have here.” The officer says as he quickly surveys the documents and flips through the pages.
“Is this some kind of a joke?” He says as he flips back through the pages again. Picking up the phone he begins dialing, “I am gonna check this out.”
Somebody at the other end picks up with the Greeting, “Smithfield security, how can I help you?”
“Hi Bridget, Steve Carlson here, can I talk to Mr. Denton?”
“He is in a meeting with some lawyers, can he call you back?”
“Actually no, this is an emergency, I need to talk to him right away.”
Knowing that Steve commands the largest jobs for the company and is a senior employee, Bridget quickly evaluates the risk of interrupting Mr. Denton. “Ok Steve, I will see what I can do.”
She places the phone on hold and replaces the handset. She walks across the reception area and gets to Mr. Dentons door. Taking a breath, she cautiously knocks a couple of times.
“What is it now.” Shouts a voice from inside.
Bridget opens the door a few inches and says to the seated man. Sir, Mr. Carlson is on line one, he says he needs to speak to you right away, its an emergency.
Snapping up the phone, he says to Bridget, Out!”
Bridget cowers from the room.
The two men sitting at the desk in front of him exchange awkward looks. Never would a receptionist be treated with such disrespect in their office.
Into the phone, “Denton here, what’s up Steve. This better be a dam important emergency.”
“I have a gentleman here who has just given me a court issued seizure order for the entire National Wholesale warehouse, inventory and all. We are ordered off the premises and they are to take over.”
“What is the name of the law firm on the documents?”
“Perkins and Welsh.”
Denton looks at the the card the men handed him, Perkins and Welsh. He looks at the men seated at his desk, “I take it you two are here on the National Wholesale business?”
“We are.”
Into the phone mouthpiece, “Don’t do anything yet. I will get back to you.” He hangs up.
“Ok, lets have it.” Denton says to the older of the two men.
The younger man hands him the documents and says, “seizure order for the National Wholesale warehouse building, assets and inventory. All staff and management are to vacate immediately and all security are to be replaced by Cascade Asset Recovery. At 12 noon the order becomes enforceable. We already have our people in place.”
“I have to make a call before I pull my people out.”
Murry Denton leaves his office and enters an adjoining office and orders the vice president of marketing out. He picks up the phone and makes a direct call to the cellphone of the controller of National Wholesale Foods. Howard Burton recognizes the number and answers on the second ring. “Howdy Murry, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I don’t know how pleasurable this is but I have two lawyers in my office with foreclosure papers and people at your warehouse, about to lock it down.”
“Is this a joke?”
“No joke, everything looks legit. I will leave my people in position until you have a chance to check this out.”
“You said they already have people in position to take over. Is there any way you can get hold of the people in charge? I would like to talk with them. Meantime, I am going to talk with my lawyers to find out what is going on. I will use the other line to talk to the lawyers and keep this line open for you.” Howard Burton hangs up and picks up another phone.
Ring, ring. “Bernstein Associates, how can I help you?”
“Howard Burton of National Wholesale foods here, I need to speak with Saul Bernstein.”
“I am sorry sir, he is in a meeting right now. Can I have him call you back?”
“No, you cannot. This is an emergency, interrupt him. I need to speak with him immediately.”
“Sir, I cannot interrupt his meeting but I can connect you with another partner, would that be acceptable.”
“Who?”
“David Bernstein and Daniel Edelman are both available to speak with you.”
“Very well, I will speak with Daniel but I want Saul to call me as soon as he is able.”
“I am connecting you now sir.”
Click, ring, ring. “Mr. Edelman, I have a Howard Burton on the line for you. He is very upset and wants to speak with Saul Bernstein but he is in a meeting and I cannot interrupt him.”
“That’s fine, Melissa. Put him through please.”
“I am connecting you now sir.”
“Hello, Daniel Edelman here, how can I help you?”
“This is Howard Burton, controller for western operations of National Wholesale foods. I have just been served foreclosure papers for our western operations, there is at least one security team about to take possession of our Washington state operation and I assume several more for our other 6 western facilities although I have not heard from them yet. Can you check to see if this is legit?”
After making a quick check on the computer, “Mr. Burton, we are aware of the foreclosure and I can assure you that we are doing everything we can on our end. As you know, International Financial services purchased all of your companies outstanding debt a couple of years back. They have noted that your asset value has fallen dramatically over the last few years and have called in the margin. Your corporation was unable to secure the necessary funding so the finance company has decided to cut its losses and foreclose.”
“Why wouldn’t they sell the bonds and notes to interested buyers, I know several who were interested.”
“I am sorry sir, your CEO and President were at the court hearings, surely they have informed you.”
“I have heard nothing, I wasn’t even aware there was a problem. Is there nothing I can do?”
“I am sorry that your head office felt it was necessary to keep you out of the loop but you have to understand, the papers are all signed and you have no choice but to comply.”
Click, Burton hangs up and dials corporate head office. An answering machine message indicating that the company, National Wholesale foods has ceased operations and all enquiries are to be directed to the Trustee, Richmond Eckert incorporation at 555-555-5555.
At that moment his phone rings, it is Brad Richards, who is standing in the security office at the warehouse. The controller picks up on the first ring. “Hello, to whom am I speaking please.”
“Brad Richardson, the agent for the trustee, I am contracted to secure and protect the company assets, pending legal disposition. I understand you are the controller for national wholesale foods.”
“Western region. At this point I have been served papers for the foreclosure of the operation but I have been unable to contact my head office to confirm and they have not informed me of any of this. I would appreciate it if your people could stand down while I get this sorted out. We did not go bankrupt or even chapter 11. I talked to our lawyers and there is something very wrong about this.”
“I can work with your security but you need to reign in Murry Denton, if he starts ordering me around and lighting off again I cannot guarantee any sort of cooperation. What we will do is not let any trucks leave the premises and we will be insuring all staff leaving the premises do not take company assets with them. We will back up your security and I am going to check this operation out from my end.”
“With all due respect, how can you check this out?”
“My best friend is a corporate lawyer with very good connections. I have a job to do and if I can be a little more diplomatic all the better.”
“Thank you and I will talk to Murry for you, he can be a little busk, military officer background but that is really no excuse for being rude.”
Brad hangs up and makes a call to Max’s burner phone. He had already sent a copy of the seizure order and foreclosure documents to Max 2 days ago. He was hoping Max had found some information on this business dealing as it was starting to look dirty to him.
“Hey brad, wait until you hear about what I found about your latest job. The bank who bought the debt is wholly owned by Excelsior international which is also the sole owner of General Motors USA and National steel products, among others. Guess who owns Excelsior international?”
“I am going out on a stretch here, Stephen Cabot.”
“Bingo, give this man a prize. The law firm that works for Wholesale foods also has among its clients, General Motors, National Steel and Stephen Cabot. They also own a large share of the trustee who was appointed to oversee disposition of the company assets. I could prove everything in court but it would take years and the company would be long gone by then.”
“Wow. How can this happen? This company hasn’t done anything wrong.”
“They carried a lot of debt and believed that as long as they paid their payments their creditors would be satisfied. In this case, the creditor was after something far more valuable and was aware of the falling market value of property and buildings. They waited until the company assets were so far below their debt that there was no way they could raise the capital to cover the margin. What people don’t understand, banks and lenders are not in the risk-taking business. They always lend with the expectation of receiving full value plus interest in every case.”
“So, they were never after the profit of interest and repayment? They were after the company assets but they are worth nothing?”
“The buildings and land are not worth much but the food in the warehouse is worth millions, possibly more. I would have to ask Jessica to give me an idea of the value of the inventory.”
“These guys have at least 20 more outlets in the US. They have all been served and are being secured by people just like you. I don’t like it a bit. I just sent everything I have to David. I am not sure what he can do about it.”
“Brad is interrupted by the sound of a tractor trailer just backing into a nearby loading dock. Its beeping sound piercing the thin walls and glass of the security building. As he looks, the head of security muses, “never seen a federal government truck here before.”
“What do you mean by Federal government truck?”
“Look at the plates, those are interstate. They pay no tolls, are not to be inspected and the highway hijackers stay away from them.”
“So why are they here?”
“My guess is that they are going to begin taking supplies for the government and UN troops. There is enough food in that one warehouse to feed the entire state of Washington for a month. If the supplies only go to the government it could feed them for years.”
“What are all the other trucks?”
“They are from suppliers or local grocery outlets.”
“Where will the local grocery outlets get their food from now?”
“There are several other wholesale outlets. National is the largest but the stores will get by. There will be some shortages and prices will increase but hopefully the others can increase production to offset this loss.”
“My documentation says that there is to be not product in or out for at least a couple of weeks. I think we should stop that truck and prevent it from leaving with any product.”
“Agreed, I will instruct my people to stand down and support you if necessary. We have not been told to stop securing the facility so that is what we are going to do.”
Brad leaves the office and walks over to the truck that has now docked. “Hey there, can I see your order”
“I don’t need to show you anything, we have people who will load us up and we will be on our way. See the plates, move along and mind your own business.”
“Oh, this is my business, I am retained by the trustee to safeguard the building and contents until legal disposition has been determined. You are here to take goods before the trustee has the ability to inventory it and assign a value.”
“Are you an idiot man. The company wasn’t taken to get money, it is for the support of our troops and agents. Disposition has been expedited, it now belongs to Excelsior international and they are the official supplier of the UN and US troops. We have two more trucks coming in today, they are to be permitted as well.”
“I think not. You can drive this truck out of here right now or I will have you forcibly removed and your truck gets impounded right here.”
As they are speaking, a black SUV pulls in and several armed UN troops and a plain clothed man exit. Another troop carrier stops across the street and several armed personnel climb out.
Brad says to the group, “you are under surveillance, I am appointed by the courts to safeguard this facility and I intend to execute my assignment to the letter.”
Across the street, one of the men says to his partner, “that is the guy I saw on the video. He was about to be killed by one of our people, in cold blood with his hands cuffed.”
The man beside him says, “fake, the video was photoshopped. The guy is a murderer.” He levels his rifle and sights it on Brad and is about to shoot when the man beside him says hold it right there as he trains his handgun on his partner. “
“Lower the rifle. That was real video and the false government went in and wiped the news. The mainstream media is starting to pick that crap up. These UN guys are anti American. I am done with them, I quit.”
The man with the rifle lowers his rifle, “You are an idiot, you need to be on the right side of the future. If you want to eat or keep a roof over your families’ head, you need to shut up and do what you are told. If you holster your weapon right now, I will forget about it and not report you. A global government will be good for us, you need to have patience.”
“Put the weapon down” says a marine who has just exited the truck.
The man with the handgun begins to lower his weapon but is stopped by the marine, “not you, him. I am not going to be party to murdering US citizens on US soil and I will not be party to theft in the name of the US government.”
Three other marines who are present all agree. “This UN takeover is bullshit. Half my platoon has already deserted. We have been tasked to distribute food laced with drugs, arrest dissenters who are caged in dormitories on base and patrol tenements that are so despicable I have only seen places that bad in science fiction movies and documentaries about 3rd world countries of the past.”
Another marine says, “I heard that when General Thomson was arrested It was because he refused to issue the order to engage and subdue the local National guard unit. I for one will never fight against my fellow American soldiers.”
“You guys are making a big mistake, you will be court-martialled for this” the first man says as one of his fellow marines zips a tie on his wrists.
“The entire group of marines shoulder their weapons, spread out and advances across the street. The sergeant shouts out to those at the truck. This mission is over Captain, we are not going to support theft. The man in plainclothes says to the sergeant, “you are not to address by my military rank and you are certainly not to tell me what to do. You will follow orders sergeant. Stand down and support our objective.”
“we are not going to blindly follow you anymore, we are Americans and we will support our country. You are under arrest for subversion and working to destabilize the Union.”
“You cannot arrest me. You take me in and you all will be arrested yourselves.”
Brad interrupts. “You can take him to the National guard unit out of Pasco and if you want to you can all transfer to them or one of the other National Guard units. You may find that many of the friends who deserted are at one of these installations.”
The driver and the three UN soldiers, realizing they are severely outgunned decide to get into the black SUV and drive away. The Soldiers all head off with Brad as he calls his contacts in the National guard and secures positions for all the marines. They get into the truck with their prisoners and head of to the base.
Brad talks to Pedro and says, “can you get one of our guys to get this thing out of here. Park it somewhere a few blocks away where we know it will be quickly stripped for parts.”
Pedro says, “shouldn’t we drain most of the diesel first.”
“Good idea, lets fill up our trucks first, then get rid of it.” He turns to the security commander and says; can we call a truce now. When your company decides to pull your people out, we will stay but until then, you are welcome to continue as before. My people will try to stay out of your way.”
“Works for me.”
Over in his headquarters, David has just finished preparing his latest news release. He has also just gotten off the phone with the last of seven asset recovery companies hired by the Trustee and warned them about the government attempt to take food from the warehouse before the trustee has legal authority to disperse the products. It appears that most of the security handovers were just as chaotic as the Washington state one.
David is about to send his news release but he knows it will only be on the net for minutes as the UN computer experts have refined their algorithms to the point where he posts and they identify and exterminate his data within minutes. What he does now is phone all the news outlets moments before he releases so they can capture and record the feed if they want to, before it gets wiped. Mainstream media is now reporting on his feed as well as the smaller independent news. Word is getting out and the nation is turning against the globalists.
A pale faced oriental guard leaves his car and comes over to the group. “Just heard some terrible news. North Korea launched several missiles on China and almost all of them hit their targets, China retaliated with dozens of missiles of its own and the report says it totally wiped out North Korea.”

I guess I didn't see that comin. Sad thing is that most of don't see it comin and won't be prepared when it does. 1984 was fiction when George Orwell wrote it. It is a documentary today.

Sorry for the long delay of this chapter but I have been suffering from a bad case of writers block. It wasn't until I had finished my first chapter of another series I am writing that I had a good idea to get closer to the end. 1 more chapter as an epilogue I think ant then a book two of the aftermath. My preppers are ready and the Stan's have a new organization well in hand.
Chapter 38
World without technology.
January 14th, 2023
At the Langley FBI headquarters, Barry Middleton is standing with the director of the FBI and a deputy director. “What the #@^$, Can’t your people do anything right. A perfectly orchestrated takeover of 20 civilian warehouses using legal channels and your clowns cannot even enforce it.”
“The legal takeover was tenuous at best and in almost every instance our military troops turned on us. In the end, they outnumbered us.”
“These are amateurs and rent a cops and your guys get sent packing with their tails between their legs. And look at the media coverage. We look like buffoons at best and outright bandits to almost everyone. We will now never get control of the food stores, how do we feed our troops?”
“Looking straight at the deputy FBI director, and your idiots lost four men and couldn’t even take down two rednecks with shitty weapons. And it got on the internet as well. I would fire you both but your replacements would be just as incompetent. How do we salvage this situation?”
“The intel these guys have and their connections are incredible. We had them cornered yet they were able to use a radio or phone to call in a local military helicopter and then have a roadblock set up before we disengaged. The kid is only a private, no way he has the influence to activate that kind of response so quickly. They had to be watching because the whole charade was on the net less than 2 hours later. I think it may have been a setup. They knew we were after the kid and put him out as bait.”
Middleton ponders this for a moment. “If it is a setup, where did they get the intel? We would have to have a very highly placed leak. If we do, they would already have leaked our plans to pick up the girl. I think we should put that on hold until we know for sure.”
Another senior FBI man, Mark Thorson, the head of internet security, enters the room and says to Middleton, "there is something circulating on the internet and you need to see it sir.”
“Can’t you see we are in a meeting here? I will look at it later.”
“I don’t think it can wait sir, it affects you greatly, you need to see it now.”
“Fine, lets get on with it.”
The internet security man opens a laptop on the table. He clicks on a link and a video starts playing. It’s David and he is making a news report in in front of a large video screen with a picture of Barry Middleton on it.
David says, “this was recorded Near Montreal, Canada, only days ago. Listen to this discussion.”
Cardinal Palmeno is just sitting down at his seat as the recording starts, having gone over and gotten himself another espresso. “Has everyone forgotten about North Korea, they have nuclear weapons and we can direct them. In addition, they have-not even been touched by the virus. It would be believable to the world, expansion into south Korea and China.”
A pause
“What, just because I am a priest I cannot think about strategy?”
From somewhere out of camera sight, “he is right, an abbreviated war will enable the UN to step in and bring in international troops. We send in the most loyal units and rally the ones left behind. Ask Russia to aid us and we could galvanize the rest of the world.”
Another voice out of camera sight, “what happens if China strikes back or Russia gets involved without UN support. It could be catastrophic.”
Middleton answers. “my intelligence sources tell me that there is an internal power struggle going on. With the assassination of Putin, his supporters are trying to maintain control and hardline communist supporters are attempting to push them out. It is not likely they will attack another communist nation. More likely, they would take a peacekeeping stance and try to galvanize the communist nations against the west.”
“If we launch North Korean missiles, how do we convince the world they did it. They will certainly know it wasn’t them. They are targeted on the west, not china,” asks the second voice.
Middleton answers, “nobody would believe them. The coincidental evidence would be really strong. My feeling is that once they realize what has happened they will launch everything.”
The first unseen voice responds, “we launch the ones we need and disable everything else?”
“And leave them defenceless should China retaliate?”
“China outguns them 100 to one. If they retaliate, there will be nothing left.”
A third unseen voice asks, “are you listening to yourselves? You are seriously considering starting a nuclear war, one that could become continental and God forbid, intercontinental. We only think we know what these leaders will do, what happens if China or Russia thinks this is an opportunity to attack the US? The result would be a nuclear winter and what kind of a world would we have then.”
The cardinal says with a curious expression on his face, “if it is Gods will.”
The second unseen voice retorts,“Gods will, bullshit. He isn’t starting a nuclear war, we are.”
“God uses us to do his work. Armageddon is prophesied in his word; how do you know this is not it?”
“You would hide behind religion to justify murdering millions of people?”
“And that is any different than murdering millions to bring about global unity and prosperity? I for one think the wold would do well with a total reset. I don’t think we have actually gone far enough.”
“So, you would encourage Armageddon?”
“Without us, the world was heading there anyways. Climate change, massive overpopulation, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. We would all be dead in 30 years, now at least some of us have a chance.”
“But nuclear destruction is not going to leave any planet to live on.”
Middleton stops the discussion. “Enough philosophy, we stay on top of it. I have people embedded in both China and Russia. We would have more than enough time to stop all inbound missiles before they re enter orbit. And we would be justified in launching a counterstrike. I say we vote on a limited strike from North Korea.”
“Agree.”
“Agree.”
“Agree.”
“Agree.”
“Agree.”
“I disagree,” says the second unseen voice.
The third unseen voice sighs and votes, “I also disagree, I think it is too dangerous a gamble.”
“5 to 2. We do it. When?”
David cuts the video and says to the screen, “We know what happened yesterday, could our national security advisor be responsible for millions of lives lost? Here’s the rest.”
He replays a part of the video, clearly Middleton and Cardinal Palmeno can be seen but 3 other voices can be heard in the discussion and 7 distinct voices can be heard voting on the motion. Middleton is clearly calling for a vote. “Enough philosophy, we stay on top of it. I have people embedded in both China and Russia. We would have more than enough time to stop all inbound missiles before they re enter orbit. And we would be justified in launching a counterstrike. I say we vote on a limited strike from North Korea.”
David starts up as soon as the video is complete, “We know 7 people voted in this room, my team is working on identifying the other 5. Stay tuned. In other news." David gestures at the screen behind him and it starts playing a video of a large group of people peacefully demonstrating in front of what is most likely a food distribution center. The video is from the air and is most likely from a drone or a chopper.
As the video pans in, UN security forces begin pressing into the crowd in a v formation. They are wearing gas masks and the reason becomes quickly obvious. Tear gas canisters begin raining into the crowd, people scream and panic. Running in all directions and with UN security forces driving a V into the group many people are trampled. As people escape the carnage they are seen being arrested on the side streets. As the crowd thins, police vans arrive and the UN security forces begins rounding up and arresting people. Bodies lie strewn about and the UN security does not appear to be offering any assistance, in fact they have not bothered to even check to see if anyone on the ground is even alive.
"This my friends, is how the UN spreads Unity and a one world government. We no longer have the right to even peacefully demonstrate."
The video disappears from the screen.
“Is that it?” asks Middleton.
“We stopped the breach at that point and were on the brink of getting a location before he went dark again. We had it off the net within 5 minutes.”
Middleton says, “Do you have a plan to combat the negative publicity?”
“We do. We have models who look identical to you and Cardinal Palmeno and are setting up a mock meeting in an identical room. We are going to stage an arrest of the individuals and they will be unmasked as imposters. When we post the video, we will air it from all our controlled news outlets. The rest will pick it up for fear of being left behind.”
“How did they get the video? We had the tightest security; the location was given at the last moment and everyone arrived with the greatest security.”
“From the direction the video must have been recorded from, we believe it was actually recorded through our own security system but we cannot find any evidence of a breach. In addition, there were no cameras in the room.”
Mark leans in and whispers into Middleton’s ear, “the breach has to have come from one of the others at your meeting. It is possible that someone smuggled in a device that was off and shielded when they arrived and they activated it once the room was cleared. The fact that they activated it at that particular moment suggests they were not interested in publicising the rest of the meeting. We have no way of knowing what else the insurgents have and were going to post.”
Middleton rubs his chin and steps back and processes this thought. “Why? If I know why, I will know who.”
Mark Thorson knows, but it is better for the resistance if Middleton doesn’t know which of 7. Inwardly smiling as he knows Middleton will suspect one of the 5 not on the video and that he will lose at least one night’s sleep over it. The last person he will suspect is the Cardinal because the Cardinal was outed in the video as well.”
“May I get back to my lab sir?”
“Of course, Mark, good work, keep it up.”
“Middleton gets back to his meeting with his top FBI officials.”
At the UN headquarters, Marisa is talking with two Generals in person and an air force general on the intercom. “You don’t have a choice general, you cannot feed your men unless your troops get control of those distribution centers. My people are running out of supplies as well. None of the distributers will sell to the US government anymore as they are having a hard time with the intur credits. Inflation devalues it so quickly they are losing money before they restock.”
The 4-star General looks at her with a questioning gaze, “don’t they use the credits to buy from the wholesalers? I thought we set the value.”
“That is where you are wrong, the market sets the value and because we have such massive shortages, prices keep going up. We give them stamps to pay for basic necessities and even then they get refused by some retailers.”
“How are they staying in business then?”
Marisa sighs, “do you not understand economics, people? Barter. They give supplies to the truckers who deliver it, they pay their leases in goods and they take barter from customers. Parts, electronic components, labor and services. Most of the employees are off the books as they all get guaranteed basic income. I don’t know who thought up this system but is impossible to control a population unless you control the resources”
Marisa continues, “that is where you three come in. We have to get control of the resources so we can get control of the people. They wont work if they don’t have to.”
“Then ask the president and the finance committee to cut off the guaranteed minimum income, then they will have no choice.”
“I wish it was that easy, the riots and backlash from doing that would be monumental. Remember, there are still 300 thousand guns somewhere in this country. We managed to recover a large number of automatic and semi automatic weapons but would you wish to send your troops against a bunch of yahoos armed with scoped high-powered hunting rifles. Not to mention, many of your own troops will not fire on their own countrymen. No, the solution is the food, medicine, gas, electricity and clothing. Cut that off so they have to come to us and we will be back in charge.”
“So, you want to launch airstrikes on some. Which ones?”
“Exactly. You have to figure out which ones are not essential. The strikes on those will weaken the resolve to defend all the rest so your ground forces should have an easier time taking them.”
“There will be scores of civilian casualties?”
“Unavoidable, we need to do this. We will be honored for our actions in the future, we need to stay steady now.”
The air force general on the line says, “I will not order airstrikes on my own citizens who have done nothing to deserve it.”
The Marine general says, “we don’t need the air force, we have our own jets and choppers, we can re arm and deploy them for ground strikes. I cannot send my troops in until the targets have been softened up.”
Marisa sighs, “Very well General. Have your troops ready for this operation at 8 am tomorrow. Make a plan but you will need to do all the major wholesale centers we own in one sweep because they will become aware of our strategy instantly.”
The second General, the commander of the US Marines says to Marisa, “I and my troops will have no part of this, you can count us out.”
Marisa pushes a button on her desk, a voice comes on, “Yes mam.”
“We have a small problem; can you activate contingency plan A.”
“Yes mam.”
The door opens and two UN military police enter, both brandishing automatic weapons at the ready, chambered, safeties off. “Sir, I would like you to hand over your sidearm please.”
Marisa says to the MPs, “place this man under arrest, the charge is insubordination, there will be others but that will be enough for now.” As she is saying this a Lieutenant General of the Marines enters.
“You are now interim commander and general of the US marines. Go with General Adams and the two of you come up with a plan. This task cannot wait and we must succeed.”
“You need to remember that the UN has requested our presence in the east with the war between North Korea and China. We will need to send a sizeable contingent there and they must be fully equipped.”
7:30 AM. Jets are scrambling from Eglin Air force base in Florida, the 366th from mountain home air base in Indiana, 150th from Kirkland air base in New Mexico, the 388 and 419th out of Utah and the first fighter wing out of Langley air force base. Their orders, “protect and defend all US civilian commercial and private property from any and all attacks from the air and ground by military and police, foreign and or domestic. They are to intercept, attempt to engage on comms with the intention of preventing the attack and if necessary use lethal force. The Us government and its forces are not to be permitted to attack its own unarmed civilians.”
Hundreds of jets scramble to positions above and around every major city in the United States. These pilots and co-pilots know their mission. They are trained and will do what is necessary to protect American civilians. What they don’t know yet is that they will be protecting American citizens from American soldiers who have their own orders.
8:03 AM Captain Weitz circles his f22 raptor around the no-fly zone near Langley Virginia and watches as two helicopters fly into the no fly zone, They are army and using his instruments he ascertains they are flying in hot. He attempts to contact them by radio. No response. He attempts again, no response. “Captain Weitz here, f22-321. I have two army choppers flying into the no-fly zone hot, they do not answer communications. Advise.”
“F22-321, Colonel Johnson here, authorization DT6532964. You are to fire 1 warning shot, if they do not retreat within 30 seconds you are to engage, full lethality. If they fire on civilian targets, you are to engage immediately, confirm.”
“Confirmed sir. Releasing warning shot now sir. One of the choppers is turning in my direction, it has just released a stinger missile. Firing on targets now sir, taking evasive action.”
As the raptor streaks to the skies, it releases its own arm armaments and a trail of decoys. The inbound stinger harmlessly explodes away from the F22 as it descends to the target once again. One chopper explodes as it is hit by the incoming arsenal launched by the F22 and the second turns and it looks to be retreating.
Captain Weitz once again attempts to communicate with the remaining chopper. “You are in a no-fly zone, my orders are to prevent any and all actions against American civilian targets. I order you to cease and be escorted to Langley Air Force base where you will be debriefed. Confirm.”
No answer.
“Captain Weitz once again attempts communication. I have you locked in, please do not make me do this.”
“Captain Weitz, Lieutenant Marshal here, I am under orders too. We were told insurgents are at those locations.”
“Lieutenant Marshal, those are innocent civilians at those locations, please disable you weapons. Why did your wing fire on me?”
“That was Major Wilkinson, he was the wing commander. I am standing down and returning to Langley as you request. We have a third chopper in the wing, it is 7 miles to the east, targeting a Supercenter and mall that we were told contains subversives who are plotting against the US government.”
Colonel Johnson was listening to the exchange, “Lieutenant Marshal, we have already intercepted that chopper and it will also be landing at Langley. I have instructed the landing crews to take you into custody but be advised, if your orders were official you have done nothing wrong here. This is only a legality.”
“Affirmed, sir. We all knew this was wrong sir but we were ordered to.”
This interaction happened all across the US, very few ground targets were hit and only 3 army aircraft were destroyed. In addition, the ground forces never did launch attacks as the air battles were easily observed from the ground by every officer and commander. As it turns out, Americans are for a large part reluctant to fire on Americans unless those Americans are actually committing atrocities like firing on unarmed and undefended American citizens. It would seem that training and conscience are what is necessary to prevent an all out civil war.
Over in China, two computer scientists. are in a computer lab with two Generals and the Chairman of the Central Military Commission. They are looking at the video posted of the Nuclear attack vote posted by David and captured before it was taken down and the one posted by the UN computer engineers.
The first scientist points to several differences as the video plays. “So, you see sir, they are not the same video. In this one the coffee maker is a different brand and the Cardinal looks to attach a second light on the front. We have also done exact measurements of the chair and table positions; the men’s size and weight and we have done analysis of the voices. These are defiantly not the same incident. My opinion sir is that the second is a mock-up to convince everyone who saw the first that there is a conspiracy to smear the Security advisor.”
The Chairman of the Central Military Commission looks at the two Generals. One, General Ding is in charge of the Air defense system that includes multiple nuclear equipped satellites and the 40 untested EMP attack nuclear devices. The other, General Han is in charge of the ground and navel based Nuclear offence system. “It would appear that our ‘friends’ would rather destroy us than pay us back what they owe.”
The General to his right says, “sir, should we decide to engage, I would advise launching half our EMP devices on the US to disable their defenses before we launch.”
General Han to his left says, “Sir, with all due respect to General Ding, if we launch those devices and they fail to deliver results, we would be in a defensive position, having failed to deliver the first strike. It is my opinion we should launch our weapons, reserve enough for a second strike and reserve the satellite weapons for a possible future strike.”
“Sir, with all due respect to General Han, if we launch sufficient weaponry on the US we leave ourselves open to an attack from Russia. We need to retain an adequate reserve for that eventuality. We are certain the devices will achieve the desired results.” He then launches into a technical discussion of the three types of EMPs and their expected results.
“Enough. I will speak with the chairman and make a decision then. Do not get out of contact.”
January 16th, 4:30 AM, 20 nuclear devices are detected in the outer atmosphere by NORAD. Alerts are sounded at every base and installation in North America. Aircraft are scrambled, Missile silos come to life, submarines dive. When the devices do not enter the inner atmosphere and detonate harmlessly everyone breathes a sigh of relief until aircraft begin crashing and the unshielded computer screens flicker and die.
Within minutes everyone in the entire US military establishment all know what has just happened. They know the satellites the missiles came from were Chinese and as one, emergency codes are read and affirmed. Missiles are targeted and begin countdowns. Three minutes later hundreds of nuclear missiles are on their way to china.
Meantime, china has unleashed its arsenal of nuclear weapons and has already begun to intercept inbound US devices. US defense sites identify and scramble shielded defense missiles to intercept the incoming Chinese missiles.
A weakened Russian government is looking on and rejoicing on its new-found opportunity. “We will wait until this dies down and we will be the new superpower, think both the competing Putin replacements.” One is hoping to ally with the US and the other group is hoping to ally with China.
The United states launches its own EMP missiles from its satellites and also engages the Outer space missile defense system that is supposed to have been cancelled years ago. In short order, every satellite in orbit that does not belong to the US or one of its close allies is destroyed.
EMP devices detonate over the now defenceless Chinese atmosphere and the entire country and most of the east goes dark. Less than 10 minutes after the initial attack, phone lines to Russia are opened and the president is on the line with the Interim Russian President Feodor Nikitich Romanov.
“Mr. President, I assume you are aware of the currant hostile attack on American soil.”
“Mr. president, I would suggest that your security advisor instigated the initial attack and the attack by the Chinese is a response. Please be aware that we do not anticipate getting involved.”
“That is very good, as your instruments may be aware, the US and its allies are now the only power in the outer atmosphere, we still hold sufficient firepower to do the same to your homeland.”
“Understand Mr. President, we do not sit well with threats and remember, our ground forces are far superior to yours.” Click. He hangs up.
From his bunker, the president issues an arrest warrant for his security advisor, Barry Middleton.

FT,
It has heated up....
From his bunker, the president issues an arrest warrant for his security advisor, Barry Middleton.
The cabal will be seeking deep dark holes which they will be buried in....
Another chapter would definitely clear this up....
Thanks for the chapter....

Now is the time to transition from pre apocalyptic to post apocalyptic
Chapter 39
Aftermath
January 15, 2023 1:31 AM
Alarms wail, a loud speaker sounds, get to cover everyone, this is not a drill. More alarms, get to cover. Repeat, this is not a drill.
Jason scrambles out of his cot and drags on his uniform, boots and headdress. He straps on his side arm and sprints out the door to the command center. “What is going on?”
The duty officer, Lieutenant Johnson replies, “Sir, there have been at least 20 potential nuclear devices launched from what intel believes to be Chinese satellites. They have not entered the atmosphere yet but it is most likely they are inbound towards the USA.”
“How soon before we know what the trajectory is.?”
“The screen in front of the lieutenant changes and as they watch, all of the dots signifying incoming missiles blink off. They have all detonated at 150 miles sir.”
“Holy crap, it is an EMP attack, order all the equipment under cover, now.”
Over the loudspeakers ‘“Get everything under EMP cover, repeat, get everything under EMP cover.”
1:32
As they are watching several dots appear on screen, “those are our weapons being launched sir. We will not see anything from them for several minutes.”
Jason stands stupefied. He has no idea what to do and has never felt so powerless. They did not have a bomb shelter here but in the mountains, it is not likely they would be a target anyways. The only possibility would be a miss targeted missile or fallout from one that may strike Vancouver or a city in Washington state. In actuality, the mountains and distance would defiantly protect them from any effects from a nuclear strike.
The radar screen goes blank but the computer stays running. “Sir, we have just lost our connection with the outside. I have no way of knowing what is happening now.”
Jason looks over at the communications sergeant who is actively trying to get a connection with an old style military radio. “I have nothing sir. Like we are alone.”
Jason steps outside and looks into the night sky. Allowing his gaze to pass from the east to the west. Thinking to himself, “they will be coming from the west, I wonder if we will intercept them all or if any will get through.” Musing to himself. “Canada used to have nuclear air to air missiles capable of intercepting and destroying inbound Nuclear missiles. They sent them back to the US in the 80’s. They have no defense against a nuclear attack now.”
1:11 as Jason is watching a jet plane plummets to the earth. It looks to be a large airliner with its engines out. Was probably at 37,000 feet heading for Vancouver when it lost all power. It crashes in a fireball somewhere in the Chilliwack lake area. He cannot see the crash but can feel a faint muffled rumble and he assumes it was the plane. As he is standing there, helpless, another plane comes into view. It is a smaller aircraft and is rapidly losing altitude as it glides without power. It crashes into the mountains near the cave Jason spent a month in last fall. This time, he can not only feel it but he hears it and sees it too.
Jason snaps out of it and heads over to the gym that is now the sheltered storage area for several trucks, 2 armored personnel carriers multiple mobile artillery pieces and all the other motorized equipment the unit has at the site. All the equipment out on patrol will have been exposed and it remains to be seen how effective the under hood and under dash EMP shielding was. Jason also does not know what duration the EMP effect has. Can he send out a rescue party for the crash victims or does he need to wait. If he has to wait, how long?
1:17 A flash of light passes overhead and catches Jason’s attention. It is followed by a loud, low rumble and high winds visible in the mountains. Jason turns and can see the top of a mushroom cloud from the west as it rises in the horizon. A tear drops from his cheek as he realizes Vancouver is no more. The blast radius could be 10 miles or more but he has no way of knowing where it was centered.
1:30 Jason walks up to Captain Wilson. “We have no communications with the outside. I need a full update on what is working and what has suffered damage by 5 AM. We move out with a contingent of 2 field ambulance units, two APCs and two troop carriers for reconnaissance. Full armor, live ammunition. We don’t know what we will find.”
In the USA, at the combined reserve and regular forces camp to the east of Seattle, the alarm sounds and soldiers scramble from their bunks to answer the call. Within minutes men and women are dressed, equipped and at the ready in muster stations across the camp.
In Jacks unit are vehicle and Materials techs. Their Master Sargent gives them the quick command, every piece of equipment that can be damaged by an EMP pulse needs to be sheltered immediately. You all know what to do, move it!
Jack and his unit scramble away and head directly to the vehicles parked in the lot. They fire them up and head directly for the large Metal doors that are already being opened. One by one all the vehicles are parked in neat rows, ready for deployment as soon as the all clear is sounded. Jack heads back for a second and then a third vehicle. They scramble out and close the large heavy doors.
The Sargent beside Jack says, “Private, do you actually think this is going to work?”
“I believe so Sargent. My father and I were able to build our own EMP device and we tested several different faraday cage designs against the three different pulse types. What we did to the trucks is good for short duration pulses but for longer term and multiple strikes it needs to be inside a cage as well. I don’t know if we were in time or if the pulses had already hit. E1 and E2 travels at the speed of light so they already hit us, E3 travels faster than the speed of sound but not at light speed, it may not have hit before we got them stored away. In addition, there is no way of knowing how long the effect will last because no test has ever been done from over a mile up or with a nuclear device. Every vehicle started and ran correctly so at least that is a positive.”
“I hope you are right Private.”
As he is talking, the Sargent has his attention diverted to a series of shooting stars in the clear blue sky. Then more. He thinks that they are likely outer atmosphere missiles being detonated or shot down. He doesn’t know they are actually satellites re entering the earths orbit as the US Star Wars defense system systematically eliminates almost every satellite in earths orbit. More flashes of light and the Sargent yells out, “everyone inside.”
They all enter the smaller man doors and close them. Inside, 29 technicians are standing, hushed and afraid. Every one feels totally useless as there is absolutely nothing any of them can do. Slowly at first and then with an increasing shaking the ground turns to jelly. The walls start to shake and they all know what it is, earthquake. Trapped now, they cannot go outside and be rained upon by the EMP pulses and light flashes from the high altitude nuclear explosions and they cannot stay inside for fear of the building collapsing around them.
“Stand your ground people, this building was built to earthquake standards, we are safer in here.” Shouts the Sargent. “Better yet, get down and roll under the trucks,” he shouts. They all comply. The concrete floor cracks like a 3030 and concrete pieces drop from the ceiling. In about a minute the shaking stops and everything goes quiet.
“Minutes pass and the shaking does not repeat itself. Half an hour later the Sargent rolls out from beneath the truck he was under. As he stands he says, I want you all to stay there in case aftershocks happen. I am going to command center to see what our orders are.
He heads out the door and is astounded with what he sees. He can see the tops of three mushroom clouds to the south west, beginning to dissipate in the wind. He double times it to the command center and is ushered in by the MP corporal who immediately recognizes him. Inside are several officers, the Commanding officer and about a dozen senior NCOs like himself.
The conversations around the room are subdued and hushed but one thing is certain in the sad looking faces around the room; tough times are not coming, they are here.
The duty officer shouts, “attention” as Colonel Watson enters the room.
“At ease people. We have serious issues to discuss.”
The colonel frowns and starts his discussion. “From what we have determined, the Chinese launched a nuclear strike on the USA that was initiated with multiple EMPs that took out all communications and possibly a large part of our defences. At this point we have had no communications with any other units or command since the initial strike but using the buried land lines and shielded observation posts we constructed, we were able to ascertain these things.”
“The EMP devices took out all unshielded electronics, our external power supply and all our communication with the exception of local ones which were shielded and protected thanks to intel provided by the NSA. We have emergency generators on now and thanks to the shielding, our grid appears intact. Multiple explosions were observed above the outer atmosphere and closer in. We believe the US destroyed all the orbiting satellites that they could not confirm were friendly, that was protocol and based on our observations that was likely successful. Most of the inbound nuclear missiles appear to have been intercepted but we are certain that no less than 4 devices were successful in striking targets along the west coast. A massive earthquake was felt and we believe it was triggered by a nuclear strike somewhere along the San Andreas fault.”
“This base was largely undamaged and will be operational as soon as we can be reasonably assured there will be no more warheads inbound and no more EMP detonations. It would be most likely that this part of the war is over unless Russia decides to get involved.
I expect us to have 5 choppers in the air for reconnaissance at first light and 2 units of ground forces complete with most of our medical staff and 2 ambulances each ready to go an hour later. That is all. Let’s go people.”
At 1:31 AM David was fast asleep and dreaming of his next communication idea when, beep, beep, beep sounds. David rouses from his sleep, looks at the video screen that has already come to life and he sees the feed showing what he knows to be a satellite discharging blips that he knows to be missiles. Before the missiles even get into orbit, David has his cordless keyboard on his lap and he is punching in code. Inside his control room a mesh cover is extending across the ceiling, the walls are being covered by mesh rolling out from converted awning rolls. Within a minute his computer center has gone from a white drywalled room to a mesh lined faraday cage. The computers shut down one by one and all the external links are cut with the small boxes developed by David so that he can air gap in seconds.
David gets up and dresses. He puts on his shoes and even puts on a tie. No hurry because everything that can be done has already been done. He walks out the door with his laptop and heads down the hall to the muster area. All the rest of the people in the building are already heading down the stairs into the subterranean basement to wait out the initial assault as there is nothing anyone can do once it starts. They all get inside and someone does a head check. Once confirmed, the heavy steel door is closed and everyone heads for different areas to think or spend time with friends for consolation.
While in the underground bunker a shake begins to happen, “Under the desks everyone,” shouts someone in the corner. Everyone scrambles for cover. The ground shakes more, pieces of debris crumble and fall. Concrete crashes and larger chunks fall. For a minute the underground shelter feels more like a tomb. As the shaking subsides and people begin to take stock, the voice from the corner shouts, everyone stay put. There may be aftershocks.
Half an hour later people are out of their hiding spots and checking up on one another. Two people with first aid training are tending to minor wounds but in all, the bunker is intact.
In Mt Vernon, all is quiet and the three women are sleeping in separate rooms. As the ground begins to shake, Alana wakes. She realizes that an earthquake is happening and when she turns on the light, nothing happens. Horridly, she pulls on a housecoat and slips into her slippers. She rushes into the hall to find Cheryl already there, “we have to get out of here, this house is 100 years old and wasn’t built to modern standards.”
A bleary-eyed Alicia is just exiting her room as she pulls on a house coat. “We gotta go” shouts Cheryl.
The three ladies run to the basement and rip some drywall from the northeast wall. Behind it is a steel door and as one they open it. Scrambling inside they pull it shut as the shaking increases. Alana drops the bar across the door and sprints down the hallway which is actually 5 40 ft sea cans placed in the ground end to end. Cheryl knows there are treated timbers across the tops and the bunker is not only bombproof and earthquake proof but it is water proof with excellent drainage.
The three enter the main bunker room and plop onto second hand store sofas against the walls. The shaking subsides and the ladies begin to relax. “Holy crap, I wonder if it was that close or if that was the big one they have been predicting. Exclaims Cheryl.”
Alana says, “I don’t know but you two stay here, I am going to check.” She climbs the steel stairwell into the grease pit it in her garage. Climbing to the floor level she can see that her barn and shop has sustained substantial damage and is most likely not salvageable. Alicia’s car is parked against the wall with a large beam across its roof but her surplus H1 looks untouched. No power she muses as she exits the building into the clear night sky. First thing she notices is the lights in the sky. “What the hell” she thinks.
Alana circles the shop and looks to the west, she can see the tops of two mushroom clouds to the north, one in the distance, and the second one close enough to almost touch. Must be Vancouver or Victoria. She turns and looks to the south and can see the top of another mushroom cloud. “Holy shit,” she says as she runs back into the shop, climbs back into the grease pit and enters the small steel door in the side. After she locks the door, she hurries down the stairs and breathlessly shares what she just saw to the others.
“It was an earthquake alright but it was caused by a nuclear attack. I could plainly see two mushroom clouds near northwest Washington or in Canada. There was a third towards Seattle. I don’t know exactly where.”
“I think we need to stay in here for at least three or four days until the fallout dissipates, I have a Geiger counter so we can check before we venture out. I have this place set up so we could spend over a year in here if we have to.” She tries the radio, nothing.
“What do you do for power down here?” Asks Cheryl.
I have a 24-inch PCV pipe that goes from the creek and runs downhill under the sea cans to a pond at the back of the property. I have two hydro generators in the pipes that can generate enough power to supply everything we would need to support 40 people down here. The problem is oxygen. For the three of us, we could last about 4 days without opening the ventilation but beyond that we have to let air in. If it is still contaminated after that, I don’t have anything to prevent that. I have hepa filters and the like but high levels of radiation requires more filtering than I have put in yet.
Cheryl looks at Alana and then at Alicia. “We can make do. What do we do if someone comes?”
Cheryl answers, “anyone who knows this place is here, is welcome. Other than you and Alicia; only Jason, Jack and David know the place is down here. There may be a neighbor or two who know something is down here but they would not know where the entrance is.”
Alicia, who is a trained nurse and is a very compassionate young lady speaks up for the first time since the earthquake. “What if people are hurt or injured out there?”
“I am sorry dear but we cannot help anyone if we are dead. We cannot go out there until we are certain the radiation levels are not lethal. I have no way of knowing witch way the wind is blowing and radiation poisoning is a long, slow, very painful death. We stay in here until I give the go ahead.” Says the ex marine master Sargent, Alana Shurtzberg.
In the mountains, Brad is awakened by the ground lightly shaking. He gets up to investigate and, in his underwear, opens the door. He can see the slight shaking and lights in the sky. Stepping out onto the deck he looks to the west and can see the tops of mushroom clouds rising in the distance. He looks to the north and can faintly see the outlines of another, possibly two rising in the air. He races back into the trailer as Jessica is just exiting the other trailer while pulling a nightgown on.
Hurriedly, Brad dresses and dashes out the door. Jessica is standing there looking at the sky. “What do we do?”
“Get to safety and figure it out from there.” He leads her over to the double doors of his sea can and unlocks the two padlocks. He pulls them open and beckons her inside.
“That is not going to protect us from the radiation. We will be burned alive if the blast gets here.”
“I don’t think the blast is going to make it here but I have an underground bunker with the entrance in there.” He once again bids her in and this time she does. He pulls the doors shut and latches them from the inside. They are not locked so someone from the outside can still open them.
At the back of the sea can he lifts up an invisible hatch in the wooden floor. Underneath is a round metal hatch and he opens it. Jessica climbs in. Brad climbs half way down, sniggling the wood cover back into position. He then climbs down further and closes and latches the metal door.
He offers a seat to Jessica, “welcome to our home for the next 3 or 4 days.”
“That long?”
“3 at least, then I will go out with my Geiger counter and check the radiation levels. If it is safe, we will try my truck. We can then search for our family and friends to see if everyone is okay.”
“Jessica resignedly sits down and sighs. Tears streaming down her cheeks.”
Outside, Butch and Trevor sprint to Brads site. “We need to take his survival shelter.”
“What happens if he is already in it, I think he is up here right now?”
Pulling an unregistered and illegal handgun from his holster, Butch says. “that would be very unlucky for him.”
Seeing the sea can closed but not locked, Trevor puts his finger to his lips. He sneaks up to the sea can and as quietly as possible, un latches it. With a flourish he whips it open as Butch waves his gun with the intention of shooting a startled Brad. Nobody in there. He walks in about 20 feet and says, “awesome, a quad and a truck, protected for us to use when the radiation dissipates. The idiot will be dead from radiation poisoning before we come back out.”
They dash out the door and circle around to the spot they know where the underground shelter entrance is. Trevor has a shovel and begins frantically digging. Once they uncover the shelter entrance, Trevor spins the wheel and opens the hatch. They both scramble in and close the hatch behind them. Snickering, Butch locks it from the inside.
In Japan, two navy observers are aware of the goings on in china and probably the US. They also know the power is out and the radio is dead but don’t know why. From the window in their tower at Yagoshi cape, they can see the mushroom clouds throughout mainland china. With the hatred they still carry in their hearts they are both very happy to see karma coming to get the savages.
At 4 am they are relieved by their replacements but these men too, only know what they have seen. There have been no communications since 1:30 so they are unaware of what is coming. The men who they relieved go back to their room and drop wearily onto their mats and are both sleeping in minutes.
3 pm and the two observers in the tower are looking over the sea. The water has been going down for quite a while and neither has ever seen a tide so low. At 311 the reason becomes obvious. A wall of water 12 meters high is racing towards the shore. They both drop everything and race out the door and down the stairs. As they run out the door, the sound of the water overwhelms them, the wave crashes over the building and races inland, taking everything with it.
The same wave had already hit the east coast of Kamchatka, Hawaii and Alaska. All areas that had absolutely no warning as their communications were out from the US EMP attack on china. Or on America. The southern portion of the wave was racing towards Australia and New Zealand but they had received warning and were rapidly moving people out of the danger zone. The infrastructure costs will be devastating as both already indebted and enslaved nations will soon become the beachhead from which the new world order will be launched.

"Well, isn't that special." Special indeed. "If at first you seek to deceive, the consequences of deceit you shall receive." I am not sure where I got this quote or if it is even exact but this is my belief. Thank goodness this is fiction. Thanks for reading

I'm not sure where I thought it was goin' when you started but it definitely wasn't in this direction. I didn't think it was going here either but It seems to me no major world domination conspiracy could ever actually be successful because of the many moving parts. People have a habit of doing what they don't want or expect, the individuals involved don't keep silent and evil people have a circle of evil people around them who are loyal only to their own agendas. I actually have a good idea where it goes from here but then again, that may change too. Forthteller

I'm guessing Butch & Trevor are in a faux "shelter", or are they in the same one but just in a different section as Brad & Jessica?

FT, WW3 lasted about 30 minutes, but Russia is still out there unless the US acted first.... Did the US act first?.?.?.? Only another chapter will reveal.... Texican.... Russia may have escaped the nuclear war but it is unlikely they will launch one of their own as the consequences of the war between the US and China will be suffered by the whole earth. This is from Stephen Starr of the University of Missouri, fas.org/pir-pubs/nuclear-war-nuclear-winter-and-human-extinction/ "While it is impossible to precisely predict all the human impacts that would result from a nuclear winter, it is relatively simple to predict those which would be most profound. That is, a nuclear winter would cause most humans and large animals to die from nuclear famine in a mass extinction event similar to the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. Following the detonation (in conflict) of US and/or Russian launch-ready strategic nuclear weapons, nuclear firestorms would burn simultaneously over a total land surface area of many thousands or tens of thousands of square miles. These mass fires, many of which would rage over large cities and industrial areas, would release many tens of millions of tons of black carbon soot and smoke (up to 180 million tons, according to peer-reviewed studies), which would rise rapidly above cloud level and into the stratosphere. [For an explanation of the calculation of smoke emissions, see Atmospheric effects & societal consequences of regional scale nuclear conflicts.] The scientists who completed the most recent peer-reviewed studies on nuclear winter discovered that the sunlight would heat the smoke, producing a self-lofting effect that would not only aid the rise of the smoke into the stratosphere (above cloud level, where it could not be rained out), but act to keep the smoke in the stratosphere for 10 years or more. The longevity of the smoke layer would act to greatly increase the severity of its effects upon the biosphere." Nuclear winter is coming. Those who are prepared will survive, those who are not, wont.

FT,
With nuclear winter, the growing season would be very short if at all....
Very hard to prepare for 10 years of little to no food....
This would be multiple shipping containers of food....
Now the southern hemisphere would be impacted but not like the northern hemisphere....
South and Central America would see invasions and be conquered....

Chapter 40Day 1: post WWIII
Jason
Jason decides to delay his land-based reconnaissance mission into the valley until day 2. He will be joining it as well. They have decided to go as far as possible to see what has happened. He sent out two of the three CH-146 Griffons instead. The choppers have come back but were unable to fly any further than Abbottsford due to smoke, reduced visibility and residual radiation. Visuals were inconclusive but it would appear the epicenter was west of the Fraser River.
His eastern chopper went as far as the temporary military base East of Seattle and have made contact with the leadership there. It appears that only 2 devices detonated south of Seattle but those devices triggered a massive earthquake along the San Andreas. As of yet, the Seattle base has only been able to perform reconnaissance as far as southern Oregon as radiation levels are so high it is dangerous to go further. Medford is still on fire, either from the earthquakes or from looting and riots which were obvious from the air. Shots were fired on the choppers as soon as they were within visual of the city.
Observations indicate widespread coastal devastation from the earthquake and it does not appear from the passover that there is any coordinated effort to affect any form of rescue or even bring about any semblance of order. In some areas, specifically Seattle, massive gatherings of people are apparent in and around the distribution centers and shopping centers but the choppers were prevented from coming in for a closer look by gunfire.
They have now established communications using pre 1970s EMP hardened ham radios. Because it would take weeks to repair or place repeater stations throughout the western provinces and states, VHF communication is not a possibility at present. Luckily, all of the units that had pledged allegiance to the USA or Canada and rejected United Nations allegiance were now connected with HF Heathkit vacuum tube 5 band 180-watt transceivers capable of single side band and Morse code. They have all acquired pre-1970 units and had them updated or had their communications units build them using readily available PDF manuals.
In most of the hundreds of bunkers Jason has built there are personal model HW-100 and HW-101 or equivalents so all these groups who survived will also be able to make contact.
Jason looks into the cloudy, overcast sky. “I wonder how many nuclear strikes hit ground targets. We could be in for a winter nobody survives.” Dismissing that thought, he decides to take care of what he can do and let the rest take care of itself.
Day 2: post WWIII
“Move out,” Shouts Jason as his convoy of ambulances, troop carriers G wagons and Coyotes begin to move. The column starts northward towards hope. The 100 or so men and women in the convoy are all nervously wondering what they are going to find. Most are also worrying about their families and how they have fared.
“The master corporal driving the G wagon Jason is riding in asks, “Sir, how long do you think it will be before we start getting reports from our families? Most of us are from the Fraser Valley or south east BC.”
“We have some communications up with our US military units already and the Kelowna Unit but I am hoping to get communications up with local law enforcement, reserve units and local Governments. Once we have that up, we can start trying to contact family. It will be a while, Mark.”
As the convoy is within sight of the Coquihalla a roadblock is observed. The convoy slows about 100 meters from the obstruction. Jason gets out and walks up to the man at the blockade. “Hi there. We are the Combined reserve/regular unit temporarily stationed at sunshine valley. We were hoping to head into the Fraser Valley to evaluate the situation and see where we might be of help.”
“Our council and our citizens have decided to quarantine our village until a proper government and some stability can be established. We are not letting anyone in from any direction unless an immediate member of your family resides in hope and vouches for you.”
Jason ponders this a moment and hoping to not start a confrontation says, “I can understand that, the heavily populated areas will be out of supplies very soon and you want to defend yourselves. We only wish passage through and back when we have completed our reconnaissance. Is that possible?”
“I will see if the mayor or someone higher up can come see you. He steps back and the three men and one woman all go back to whatever they were doing before the convoy arrived.”
“One of the men who was at the blockade when the convoy was approaching had already driven back into town in a beat-up pickup and was now back with several gun toting men and the mayor, Marjorie Stockton.”
“Hi Jason, wanna get through, eh.”
“I need to. We are still in service to the Canadian People so we want to be as much help as possible.”
“If you want to, you can set up a satellite base here in town. We have two vacant warehouses on the west side just past the highway 1 junction.”
“That would be very helpful. We will do that, thanks.”
“Looking at the Cpl sitting in the driver’s seat of the G wagon 100 meters away, Jason adds. Several of my people have family in town, is there any way they can get in contact with them to see if they are alright?”
“Sure, I know most everybody in town so get me a list and I will make contact. You know there is still a warrant out for your arrest?”
“I imagine there is, you know what happened, don’t you?”
“Everybody does and I cannot imagine anyone in the RCMP stepping up to take you in. We threw every UN observer and sympathiser out when we set up blockades. We have everything we need to be self sufficient for at least a year, we will be building more greenhouses immediately and everybody in town is on board or out. No exceptions. To hell with global warming, we will be burning wood in our boilers to heat the greenhouses and in our homes.”
“You won’t have to worry about global warming, the smoke you see up there is all the way into the upper atmosphere. We won’t see the sun or the moon for months, maybe years, depending on how many nukes the morons shot at each other.”
Jason pulls out a scientific report he had copied before the internet went down forever. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2006JD008235 He has at least 30 copies of it and intends to hand them out to leaders such as Marjorie today so they will know what may be coming. “This is pretty old but the information is still valid, it will tell you what you may expect.”
Marjorie takes the report and flips through it, “2 to 10 degrees drop in average temperature. It is already cold up here, how do we survive this?”
“If it is the maximum, say over 75 Terra-grams we don’t. An ice age for certain within 10 years. If it is in the minimum range, about 5 Tg, we do, but it will be extremely difficult. My earliest reports indicate 4 devices detonated on the west coast, 2 in California and 2 in Vancouver/Victoria area. Did you feel the earthquake here?”
“Earthquake? We felt some shaking but because we could see the mushroom cloud we thought it was the bomb. Communications are out everywhere and we have no electricity. Almost every car doesn’t work except some old ones and every radio is out. We have no idea what happened.”
“The attack was initiated with an Electro Magnetic pulse, an EMP. That wiped out everything electronic as far as we can tell. We still don’t know what is happening on the other side of the Rockies. I have ham radios up and running and have communication with everyone who has one of them. We will leave you a good base unit, some of your survivalists in the community have them as well. Get the word out, they need to be sharing.”
“Who attacked us.”
“My information is the Chinese. They had only about 200 nuclear missiles capable of striking the US so they likely thought that if they wipe out our communications and electrical grids they would disable out defenses. I doubt that was the case but even so a small percentage will have found their targets. The greater problem is how many did the US respond with and what about the missiles that were intercepted.”
On a roll now, Jason the prepper, continues. “If the US intercepted all the inbound missiles in the atmosphere we have another major problem. We either have our oceans full of undetonated nuclear devices, nuclear debris or detonated missiles that create massive amounts of Nitric oxide. None of these are good but the Nitric oxide will rise into our upper atmosphere and deplete our ozone layer. Now we get to burn while we freeze to death.”
“Do you have to be so melodramatic about it, Jason?”
“Melodramatic! Look around, we are in the middle of world war three and I am telling what is, I have been warning people for decades but few have listened. You have a few in your town who did and they are ready.”
“Okay, you have given me lots to think about. I am going to take this to council. Seems we have some plans to make. Come see me when you get back,” she says as she looks at the handsome, fit, 60ish man in uniform before her.
“Will do. I am going to leave a small contingent at the warehouses you offered on the way west. Can you give the address to the Sargent in the truck behind mine?”
Jason salutes and briskly turns as he walks back to the second truck in line. After a short word he returns to the passenger seat of the G wagon and jumps in. Before he is even buckled, the barricades are moved and the road is clear to travel. The convoy starts up and they proceed through.
At the intersection to highway one most of the convoy merges but two vehicles peel off and head towards the warehouses offered by the town. Travelling at 45 kms per hour the convoy reaches the exit to Agassiz in 40 minutes. They all veer right and through the roundabout. At the base of the Agassiz bridge they encounter another roadblock. This one maned by RCMP officers and several uniformed reservists. The G wagon approaches the forward blockade and Jason is immediately recognized by one of the reservists who was at the Sunshine Valley compound for the first 3 months before Christmas. They pull the gate back allowing the convoy to pass through. Some salute as they pass but all are genuinely happy to see this group.
In town, Jason gets the same response as he got in Hope. He askes the RCMP commander, Staff Sargent Richard Carlson, “what is going on around my house and community in Laidlaw.”
The commander replies, “The entire area is occupied by UN troops and bureaucrats. They have even built quarters and a mess hall. I think there are over 500 there now. Almost every community has kicked them out but I think they still have a presence in Chilliwack and Abbottsford.”
“Dam. So, they still have my house and farm?”
“Afraid so Jason.”
“you have things well in hand here. Here are some things I am going to hand out to anyone who is serious about getting through this.” Jason hands him a copy of his report on nuclear winter and the Nitrous oxide problem. “Do you have any old school Ham radios here?”
“We have several. A few of the guys you set up with survival shelters have brought them to us. Around town you have always been the conspiracy nut, I guess you knew all along. Pity, nobody listened to you.”
“Enough did. Here are the call signs for the stations we are monitoring. We would appreciate any information you can get us and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.”
“Move out.” The g wagon heads back out of town, the convoy trailing behind.”
“The master corporal beside Jason comments. Some of the vehicles in the convoy will need to fuel up for the return trip.”
“We will see what we can get in Chilliwack but if we cannot get anything there we will fill up with our Jerrycans from the back of the supply truck in the middle.”
An hour later, the g wagon slows and pulls onto the off ramp access to Vedder road. It is clogged with several cars and a wrecked tractor trailer. The G wagon pulls over. One of the men behind gets out as Jason does and walks up to the g wagon. He salutes, “Sir, we can hook up a cable from one of the APCs to the truck and drag it out of the way.”
“Great, lets do that.” Jason hears screaming and a gunshot. More screaming, more gunshots. “I think we need to put a perimeter in in case some hostiles show up.”
“Noted sir, consider it done. The warrant officer heads back to give instructions as Jason heads back to get a couple of soldiers.
Picking a private and a corporal he says, “I would like you two to come with me while we check out the area.” They grab their weapons and follow him.
Jason heads up the bank at a low crouch and crests the overpass. Once there he stands up and tries to ascertain where the shots came from. Looks like the Chilliwack mall or possibly the cottonwood mall. Hard to tell because they face each other across Luckakuck Road. He crosses the street with two abandoned cars on it and heads down the embankment and crosses the east bound off ramp. The two soldiers flank him on either side. Both alert to anything that may pose a threat. He gets to the Northeast corner of Cottonwood mall and several shots ring out.
Quietly he says to the two soldiers, “definitely coming from the entrance of this store. I think it is a Walmart.” He sneaks up the east wall and at the southeast corner sneaks a peek. A large group of people are milling about, trying to get into the store. Several have rifles, a couple have handguns. Inside are others that Jason cannot see but it appears the shots are coming from inside as well as outside.
A girl, about 15, sees Jason and runs over to his position. As she gets to the corner, Jason grabs her by the arms and pulls her into cover. Breathlessly she says, “are you the good guys?”
“She sees the Canadian flag prominently displayed on his chest. I hope you are, those guys in there are in uniform too and they won’t let us in to buy food or anything. My friends and I are from Vancouver and it is gone.” She says sobbing.
“Do the people in there have uniforms like me?”
“Sort of.” She says looking at the camouflage Jason is wearing but they have different hats.”
“Blue ones?”
“Yeah, blue ones. Some don’t have uniforms. The are at least 20 n there. Maybe more. They have better guns, two of the people out here are already dead I think.”
As she is talking several of the people in the crowd break into a run towards the store. Some are firing and others are unarmed. Automatic fire is exchange from the inside and several people drop, the rest turning and running in different directions to escape the automatic fire. As the firing stops a megaphone sounds. This is the authorities, you are to desist and return to your homes in an orderly fashion. We will be distributing food and supplies when we have set up a proper system. We have reinforcements on route so any left here will be dealt with accordingly.
The crowd disperses slowly but many linger around the edges of the entrance, out of the firing line.
Jason asks the terrified girl. “How long has this been going on?”
“Since this morning. Everyone woke up for the second day with no power and no water. Every store is already empty and only the big ones are still stocked. These same guys are in the save-on-foods on Vedder and at the Safeway across the street.”
“Have you got a safe place to go?”
“My friends and I were visiting friends. They have an apartment down the street. I just came here to see if we can get some water and food.”
“Where are your parents?”
“They are probably gone. We live in Vancouver and they were home when the big bomb went off.”
Jason knows the signs of shock and this girl was not suffering from it. She didn’t even show any signs of sadness when she mater of fact said they were gone. He then realized that she was probably high when he looked at her eyes. “Are you a runaway?”
“NO. Why would you say that?”
“You should have been home yesterday and at school the day before. You are what 14, 15.”
“13” she says as she runs away down the street.
The corporal was just about to chase her when Jason stops him. “Let her go son, we can only save the ones who want to saved.”
With an enquiring look, “sir?”
“We are in a place in time where we can save some people but we will need to make choices so tough, you could only imagine them in your worst nightmares. If you were to catch her there is a better chance than not she would refuse our protection. In addition, you would be putting yourself at risk just trying to catch her. You can save far more people by helping those who want to be helped. Let’s get back to the truck. We need to get our people and root out the UN hoarders before their reinforcements arrive.”
Jason and his two men sprint back to the convoy. They have not only pulled the truck away but they have pushed the passenger vehicles off the roadway too. Jason talks to his people and tell the drivers of a troop carrier and a g wagon to wait at the overpass and watch for the reinforcements. Stop them before they get on the on ramp.
He then jumps into the G wagon; the other soldiers jump into the rest of the vehicles and they head out. The convoy rolls on, across the overpass, right onto Luckakuck and into the south side of the parking lot, out of range for effective small arms fire. Soldiers scramble from the trucks and listen intently as Jason tells the plan.
“I am going to go up and talk to them first and give them an opportunity to abandon the building. If they refuse and fire on me, the two APCs approach at full speed and enter the store through the front. If they still refuse to abandon the center, you are authorized to use lethal force. Are we ready to do this, most of you have never seen real combat, this could get ugly?”
Jason makes a show of laying down his firearms. He then raises his arms and approaches the store. Once within earshot he makes his proposition. “If you abandon the store and leave peacefully without your weapons we will not take you into custody and we will not stop you from carrying out any supplies you may need.”
“You have no authority to do this, we are covered by UN directive 365. When there is a global war or catastrophe, the UN has authority over any and all local, state and federal authorities.”
“You idiots caused the war and that directive is BS. You made it up.”
“Mr. Schmitt, you are committing treason just wearing that uniform, you can turn around and forget this happened. We will meet again.”
“I don’t know who you are but we are coming in to liberate that store, we have the firepower to do it. You have two minutes to make your decision.” Jason turns and begins to walk away. A shot rings out and he falls to the ground.
Seeing this, his unit executes his plan. The APCs drive straight into the front of the store but instead of surrendering the UN people open fire. One is shouldering an RPG launcher. Jason, on the ground turns to see the man with the rocket launcher fall to the ground. He looks to the trucks and sees his own driver, just chambering another round in his high-powered sniper rifle. Who would have known”
The other soldiers had already scrambled across the parking lot while attention was diverted by the APCs. They were already in position to enter the store and take out several of the gun wielding UN troops. Several more dropped their weapons and surrendered almost immediately.
Jason, adjusting his body armor, stands and runs in, “hold you fire.”
The shooting stops and the warrant officer shouts, “everyone, face down, hands behind your backs, now!”
The UN troops are all on the ground. “Jason says to the troops. Out, all of you. Leave everything behind. Let your bosses know. You are ordered out of Canada forthwith. I want all your keys on the fender as you go. Corporal, search them all please.”
The UN troops and the civilian bureaucrats file out, taking their wounded with them. Jason tosses a set of keys to one of the bureaucrats a set of keys, “for your wounded.”
The bureaucrat says, I am agent Pascal, we will be meeting again. With that he waves at two more plain clothed men and the three march over to a UN jeep and climb in. They start it up and drive away without taking any wounded with them.
Jason orders his medics to tend to the wounded and to get the bodies in the store and parking lot. “Do you see what kind of an organization you are working for? These men are not United Nations, your organization was taken over by others years ago, they are still using you to do their dirty work by they are not peacekeepers, they are tyrants. I am giving you all a chance right now, walk away but don’t go back to the UN.”
“Where would we go?” Says one of the more senior men. “We don’t live here, I am from Ontario, Jones here is from Charlestown and Maria is from Paris, France. We cannot just leave, that is desertion.”
“You could just stay here in Chilliwack. I am going to leave men here to distribute food and supplies, you could help them.”
“You leave armed people to distribute food, how is that any different than what we were going to do.”
“Your people were not going to distribute anything to the public. Your people were going to use it to control them and to feed your own troops. I won’t be leaving armed people to shoot anyone. I am going to leave Chilliwack residents to distribute the food. This place will be empty in a week. After that, the real shortages happen.”
As they are talking the G wagon from the overpass pulls into the parking lot followed by the UN jeep driven by one of the Canadian soldiers. The three UN men sitting in the back.
The Sargent in the G wagon says with a grin, “did you lose anything, sir.”
“I was going to let them go but I have changed my mind. Good to see you again, agent Pascal. Take these men into custody,” Jason says as he waves at the three plain clothed men.
Jason watches as the three men are cuffed and placed in one of the troop carriers. He then grabs a bullhorn, “anyone who wants food and water, line up at the front of the store.” He tells his men to get a supply line going and start distributing goods. No more than three days food and water per person.
People line up and within minutes hundreds are in the line up. His entire unit with the exception of his two APC crews are distributing food. Hours later, they are starting to recognize the same people in line. “I already saw you once today, come back tomorrow, leave some for others.”
9 o’clock and Jason decides to stop the distribution. Several of the people grumble but Jason tells the crowd, “come back tomorrow.” He knows that he has several more stores to liberate but he does not have the manpower to do it and maintain control here. He does not know that the re enforcements from the UN stronghold east of the Agassiz turnoff had arrived. They had seen his men on the overpass and had gone back to get even more reinforcements. He also does not know that several of the people who received the food today were friends and family of reservists stationed at what remains of the stripped down CFB Chilliwack and the Seaforth highlanders from the downtown Armory.

I'm guessing Butch & Trevor are in a faux "shelter", or are they in the same one but just in a different section as Brad & Jessica? Correct. early in the book, I went into a some detail on how Jason and Brad build survival shelter or to be honest, how I would build them if I did it. Always two. one for the authorities to find should they be ratted out or a satellite image show location and a second right next to it with the entrance on the opposite end. In brads case, he put the sea can over his second shelter. Chapter 11. Butch and Trevor were at the campground when Brad built the shelter and they went over and uncovered it after he left. He knew that because they didn't recover it properly before he returned the next day, he left some guns and stuff in it but took the best guns out and put them in his secret bunker. Stored information for another day. Thanks for reading

FT, With nuclear winter, the growing season would be very short if at all.... Very hard to prepare for 10 years of little to no food.... This would be multiple shipping containers of food.... Now the southern hemisphere would be impacted but not like the northern hemisphere.... South and Central America would see invasions and be conquered.... Texican.... It all depends on how may nuclear devices exploded. but assume, 10 in the USA, 5 in Canada, (we have no defense) 30 in mainland china, it would likely be only a 10 to 15 Tg dust cloud. According to what I have read, that is somewhere in the 1.5 to 3 degree average world temperature decrease. Assume 0 percent in southern hemisphere and our global warming alarmists 1 degree we are up and that equals about a 2 to 5 degree temperature drop in the northern hemisphere. I am already freezing my butt off up here in the winter, 5 degrees colder will really hurt but will not be fatal. Greenhouses fueled by carbon is the solution. Global warming is not a problem anymore either. Then what about all the missiles that were fired and intercepted, they will have an adverse effect in our ozone layer. Freeze our butts off while we sunburn.

Hey FT, It has been days and days since a feeding of the moar hounds and we are starving out here... Texican.... Sorry about that Tex. Small writers block and vacations and work and life interfering with my writing. You will note that in this chapter, your state is also choosing freedom over globalism.

Chapter 41
Day 2 Post WWIII
Conspiracy never dies
The intercom on the Presidents sleeping quarters buzzes to life. “Good morning Mr. president. You asked that we wake you at first light. We have a report ready for you in the main control center.”
“Very well, I will join you shortly,” President Connolly says as he flips the blankets aside and drops his feet to the floor. He walks into the tiny bathroom and quickly does his regular morning routine before getting dressed in a fresh white silk shirt and black suit complete with his trademark red tie.” He steps out in the hallway and his aid hands him a fresh cup of black coffee. With a gulp, “lead the way.”
President Connolly follows his aid who is actually a secret service agent down the hall and towards the control center. From down here the presidential survival bunker seems more like a prison but at least it is safe. The aid opens a door to the left and President Connolly walks in. Inside are several generals and a rear admiral. At least 4 very senior federal government leaders and the republican house leader, Sam Daily.
“Crap,” thinks President Connolly, “what is he doing here and where is the vice president.”
The assembled people all stand at attention when he arrives until he issues an, “at ease everyone. What do we have, starting with actual strikes and damage.”
The air force general present clears his throat and responds with, “Communications are out in most of the United States. All the VHF repeater stations are out, microwave towers are fried and everything with an antenna is damaged. We had no idea EMP would be that effective. China was even less prepared than we were for an EMP attack. They had almost no defenses and it appears from our fly overs that over 25 percent of our missiles hit their intended targets.”
Leaning in, a perplexed President Connolly asks, “how do we know this?”
“With no communications we sent out all the RC-135 Recon aircraft that were still capable of flying. 11 in all. They were all inside newer hangers that provided protection from the EMP pulses.”
Continuing on, the Air force general says, “We sent 3 out of Davis-Monthan air base in Arizona. 2 flew over Mainland china before returning with information and we sent out 1 to the West coast. Communications are sight line microwaves between in flight aircraft. We desperately need communications with our ground crews to get back to full operational status. All the rest we used as repeater stations for communications.”
A two-star Army General in the room jumps in. Addressing the President, he says, “sir, we have our engineers and technicians on every repeater station working non-stop to get communications back up as soon as possible. We expect to be fully combat capable within 48hours.”
Ignoring the army general, president Connolly looks at the Air Force General and says, what did you find on the west coast?”
The air force general replies, “the bird we sent to the west coast reported back that California is devastated. We are certain Los Angeles sustained a direct hit. San Francisco may have been hit but we are not certain as the entire area is under water. We think there was a massive earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone and it triggered the one along the San Andreas.”
Exasperated, President Connolly shouts, “You think?”
“We Know. We sent that bird north to Canada to see if that was the case and it appears to be so. Our observations show that the west side of the subduction zone dropped a full 12 ft which is even larger than the one we know about 400 years ago. Vancouver and Victoria were both direct hits and it is most likely that is what triggered the earthquakes. Our survey shows a blast radius of about 12 miles which would suggest they hit it with 2 Dong-Feng 5a’s with a yield of around 3 to 5 Megatons.”
“Canada is a friend to China and probably a third of the population of Vancouver was Chinese. Why would they bomb them?” asks a perplexed President.
“The subduction zone is along the west coast of Vancouver Island and along the West coast of Washington state. By hitting both Vancouver and Victoria they hit a land mass on both sides of the zone. A certainty that a subduction earthquake would be triggered. Our times indicate that the Canadian strikes preceded the two Las angelus strikes by about 5 minutes. Several of our missile defense silos were damaged in the quake and the systems were rebooting as the strike on the US targets took place. They would have never hit the west coast of California had the earthquake not occurred first.”
“What military presence do we have left in the west? Asks the President now becoming more concerned.”
Another army general in the room speaks up. “Not much sir. Several reserve units and a few bases inland from the coast. The problem is, Sir, almost all the surviving bases and units are the ones we have been having difficulty with allegiances. They all seem to have survived the EMP attack and are already operational with communications. It is like they had been forewarned of the EMP attack and were prepared for it.”
“Son of a bitch. That kid in Seattle sent out warnings of EMPs weeks ago and even longer. How come we didn’t take those warnings into account?”
The most senior general in the room, a 4-star general named Dean Adams replies, “Sir, our security assessment was that these were the ramblings of a subversive, intent on shaking the public confidence of the military. We knew the Chinese had nuclear equipped satellites but intelligence sources never indicated they may be used as EMP detonations at 150 miles up and we certainly did not expect the type of devastation that was actually inflicted. We even underestimated the effectiveness of our own devices, of which we still have enough to wipe out Russia and any other countries who wish us harm.”
“Middleton!”
“Sir”, inquired general Adams.
“Nothing,” Replies the President as he thinks about what Middleton knew and didn’t know and what else he has not passed along. “What of the eastern areas? Anything hit the east and central USA?”
“With a sigh, General Horton replies. “We were able to intercept over 100 incoming ICBMs but several got through and hit strategic targets that were likely targeted by more than one warhead. 2 direct hits in Florida, one on the peninsula west of Jacksonville, and a second direct hit on Pensacola.”
Continuing on, the General says, “A direct strike on Norfolk and a second on Yorkton. By luck or intent, almost the entire US navy based domestically was wiped out in a single day. Two more strikes inland, one direct hit on Kansas City and a second to the west of Detroit. Also, of note, Ottawa and Montreal were also hit, we have no idea what strategic significance that would have for the Chinese. Canada is a Minor participant in NATO and to the best of our knowledge poses no threat. Possibly to close the seaway so we cannot use it as well?”
The President processes this for a moment. “To shut down our exports and manufacturing ability. What about our allies and the rest of Europe.”
“The air force General replies, we sent out several birds over Europe and the United Kingdom and they show no effects at all from the war. One plane that took pictures over Pakistan shows that it has readied its missile defense systems and its first strike silos. India has done the same. I do not know if the UN is in there trying to forestall aggressions but we have enough problems of our own and don’t have the resources to get involved in any way.”
“Have we talked with the British Military brass yet? The UN leadership and German authorities. And where is my Secretary of Defense?”
The Airforce General, who thinks it is actually strange that he is giving a report directly to the President says, “Sir, the Secretary of Defense President was at Pensacola when the initial strike occurred and we are still unable to determine if he was able to get to a secure and safe installation before the missile hit. Until communications are restored and we can get a team in to search, we have no way of knowing.”
“Do we know where the Vice President and the Secretary of state is?”
The Air force Vice president answers the President. “The Vice President was in DC at the time, we don’t know why he isn’t in the bunker now. Secretary of state is in New York at the United Nations compound. We are putting a chopper in there right now so we can get some communications on line.”
“Is it safe to leave the Bunker now?”
The Air Force General says, “Sir, at this point, we are unsure if Russia will take the opportunity to attack us as well. We are basically unprotected from low altitude ICBMs and because of that, protocol dictates that the head of state, you, stay in a secure facility.”
“I have already spoken to Russia and they are not going to strike the US, they are staying out of it. I am going topside, have my cabinet assembled and ready by 1:00”
In New York, Marisa de Silva is marching up the hall having left her command bunker at first light. She walks into the communication center and sees several senior UN military people and the two Generals who are still on board with the UN agenda.
General Adams, the commander of the US marines is standing behind several radio tecs. He can hear static and voices as they connect with others on this primitive radio network. “How soon can we get a contact in Washington, DC.?”
The officer beside the radio operator turns and addresses the General. “Sir, the base unit was sent in by chopper but we did not have any people trained to operate it. This is a local licensed ham radio operator and he has offered to get it up and running and train some of our communication people how to operated and maintain it. The other end should be up and running by now sir. The ham radio operator there is one of the best in the country, he should be making contact any time now. Once he makes contact, he will spend the rest of the day teaching the radio technicians there how to operate and maintain the unit.”
“How do you think the US government and US military communicating?”
“They would be using line of sight microwave equipment. If they need to go beyond the horizon they can send choppers or aircraft up and use them as repeater stations. They most likely have the repeater stations throughout the US on number 1 priority at the moment. I would expect them to have all their communications up within 48 hours.”
Marisa was standing behind the general, listening to the conversation. Motioning to the General she says, “General, may I have a word with you in private.”
“Certainly, mam,” He says. “We can speak in there,” he says as he motions to an adjoining office.
They enter and Marisa closes the door. She immediately starts in. “Without communications we stand to lose a great deal. Our people out west were having a great deal of problems maintaining a presence as most law enforcement and a large portion of the military no longer see us as an ally but as an enemy. We were no longer getting official support and that has made all our units vulnerable. Is there any way to get communication up before the US Government does?”
“We are working on getting more equipment. We have come into contact with a local survivalist group and they have a 15-Watt PSK base unit and as long as we get an equivalent unit on the other end we can communicate up to 12,000 miles away.”
The General continues on. “They sent one of their people over here to train our radio operators on the system we have in the other room. The problem is we need a trained team and a good unit everywhere we want to communicate.”
Marisa absorbs the information. “Can these units be portable?”
This unit is on an upper floor and we have a 50 ft antenna on the roof. The other unit would need to be in free space with no obstacles and no other devices absorbing the signal, but yes it could be mobile. On a truck or trailer with a portable antenna would work.”
“Where can we get more of these radios?
“We can’t. The commercially available ones have all been snapped up and those who have them are very reluctant to give them up. We have received chatter from the west coast and there are several reserve units and resistance groups already up and communicating.”
“Then track down the people who have them and expropriate them in the name of National Security, by force if necessary. I need all our western units mobilised and brought East to support our efforts here. We can make a push back into the west when we have established better control of the east and the means of production and manufacturing. Supply and resources are the ways to eliminate resistance. Force only galvanizes
Just then, an apprehensive tap on the door from a young officer.
The General seeing the young man, beckons him to enter.
Stepping into the room and smartly saluting, “sorry to interrupt sir but we have our system up and communicating. General Hanson on the other end would like to speak to you personally, he says it is an urgent matter.”
General Adams swiftly marches out and approaches the ham radio station. The operation sees him approach and hands him a set of headphones. “Your communication will be private with these, sir.”
Putting them on, all he can hear is static and squeaking. “This is Aeneral Adams, to whom am I speaking?
Good to hear you Sam, Richard here. Wish this was over a golf game but here we are. Is Security Advisor Middleton present?”
“Not here Rich but I am pretty sure he is in the building.”
“Good. I have Presidential order 20163A here. Immediate public arrest and detention of Security Advisor Middleton.”
“Public?”
“Exactly. The president wants all of America seeing us arrest the man responsible for this disaster. We expect to have our full microwave grid up and running in 48 hours. He is going to be publicly tried and convicted online and his punishment will be expedited.”
“Okay, how do I get this in writing?”
“I have a chopper on route as we speak but you need to arrest him in case he gets some form of communication before that and disappears. The only thing that can galvanize the public right now is the capture and punishment of the person responsible.
“Ok. We will get it done immediately. How are your interim radio preparations coming along there now?”
“We have 3 units up and running and are attempting to get something going in Texas but the resistance has already gotten several base units and has the ability to flood all the channels with traffic so we cannot get any information from there. The have already established communications and they have forged loyalties with most of the military there, I doubt this goes away without some serious hostilities.
We have our aircraft using microwave systems but no ground units to receive anything we send. Grab that Middleton and we will talk later, out.”
General Adams hands the headset back to the radio operator and says, well done son. “I know you are not military but I will see you get a commendation for this. Lieutenant, can you get me Captain Blaise of the UN security forces please.”
“Yes sir” The Lieutenant salutes and exits the communications room.
Within minutes he is back with the UN captain who approaches the General and with sluggish salute says, “Sir, you requested my presence.”
Marisa, who is standing by, “He ordered it and you are to extend the same respect you would give to a senior UN officer.”
Wit a stomp, he comes to attention and crisply salutes the General, “My apologies sir, I was not of the knowledge we were in the same chain of command.”
“I am a 4-star general in an allied military, of course we are in the same chain of command.”
“Your orders sir.”
“Take a TV crew and arrest Security Advisor Barry Middleton publicly. I want him in secure custody immediately”
“Yes sir.”
The security captain salutes, turns on his heals and exits the communication center. Gathering his team and a camera crew, he determines the wing Middleton is in and devises a plan to breach the apartment he uses with little chance of a confrontation. His men, using door rams burst open booth the entrance and exit doors at the same moment. Silence. They begin clearing rooms until a voice from the den, got him sir, you need to come sees this.”
Captain Blaise walks into the room and sees the slumped body of Barry Middleton and the service gun on the floor to his right. From the look of the scene, he has been dead for several hours. The UN officer backs out of the already stinking room. Get a meat crew in here to take care of this he says to his young second in command. Everyone out and guard this apartment from the hallway so the investigators can get in here to see what happened.”
The lieutenant looks at the Captain, “isn’t it obvious, he committed suicide. Look at the hand-written note there and the obvious file of information he wants someone to read?”
“you are correct Pete but it is not our job to make that conclusion. Let’s protect the evidence and let the higher ups make those observations.” With that he turns and heads back to the communication center with the news, not knowing that the file was already being duplicated and that duplicate would be out of the building in minutes.
Across the world, the president of Russia is in the house of the Government of the Russian Federation, discussing the American situation with the President. A commotion sounds from outside. Gunshots, automatic weapons fire, the door bursts open and both the security guards present, turn their weapons on the president and the prime minister.
The leader of the incursion, an army general enters the room and looks at the president. “You are relieved of your presidency, sir.”
With that, he expertly places a bullet dead center into the forehead of both the president and the Prime minister. They slump to the ground.
“Get this garbage out of here, enemies of the people need to be displayed as they are, traitors.”
Across Russia, the same thing is happening as the hard-line communists take control of the country. Bureau by bureau, government office by government office and factory by factory they remove the owners and senior management, executing most with any resistance whatever. People rejoice in the streets and any dissenters are arrested or executed on the spot. Privately held stores, business and suppliers are opened by troops and the goods within orderly distributed to the waiting people.
Over the next few days, everything held for sale was distributed and given to people across the country. People who previously had nothing, now had food, appliances, consumer goods and even cars. Parties and celebrations were everywhere. Meantime, the military moved into position in every factory, hamlet and village, ready to start the new order. New leaders were placed in position and The Peoples Republic of the USSR is reborn.
