Hope you all kept your PCs updated both for anti-virus as well as Windows. This ransomware attack was completely avoidable if people (a) kept their systems updated and (b) didn't click on strange links. www.bbc.com/news/technology-39901382People typically don't think about computer safety/security as a prep issue, but it really is. Electric and gas utilities in Spain have been infected, as have many hospitals in the UK. If the power gets knocked out, or you can't get medication or treatment, ransomware becomes a prep issue.

Still runnin' XP on this PC and a laptop, so they've stopped gettin' update some time back. I've been continuously updating Malwarebytes since I first became aware of this problem yesterday. Ran to town after work this afternoon and all seemed well there. Magic money machine (ATM) worked okay so I grabbed some more cash, then used the credit card to fill the gas tank on the truck. On Sundays I sometimes park in the library's parking lot and use their wifi to get updates on the ol' laptop, but I may wait a week or so to be sure their network is clean. I figure that with dialup at home, it'll take any evil stuff so long to download that the bad guys will give up.
