Good story so far, thank you.
If I have one suggestion it would be to add white space(a blank line between paragraphs), it makes it much easier to read.

Fundamentals of Political Science in a Nut Shell “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”, and a turd will stink even if you put a gold ribbon on it. – Whether you you call it a democracy, a republic, a confederation, a union, a commonwealth, a dictatorship, a constitutional monarchy, a triumvirate, a cartel, a mafioso, an empire, an oligarchy, or even a territorial street gang it all boils down to the same bottom line. Whoever has the most clout in this place and at this time rules, and the rules are made (and enforced in a selective manner) to suit the purposes of those willing to wield the most clout at this place and this time.

Chapter 4
Banni Suun, the head of the UN was furious. The nerve of those Americans, they cannot get away with this! They agreed to follow the advice and instructions from the UN! They will be taught who is running things around here! Making a call, he demanded that the American Secretary of State come to his office. When she arrived Suun was already yelling and screaming at staff. Glaring at her, Suun demanded to know what is going on and why is this all a problem.
“I have been briefed on the problem. Your advisers made a mistake and killed an innocent woman and boy.”
“I will tell you what, I want American guns gone! You and your president better start working on that!” Calming a little, he said, “we are going to change things just a little. The advisers will stay in the cities, but we will use different ones. They will be advisers and answer to me. They will not go on raids and they will not make any mistakes. Now go! Take care of this!”
Quietly leaving, she was angry to be treated like this. She had her own plan. She did not need that bastard.
Calming down, he smiled to himself. Stupid Americans, the UN advisers were just a diversion. The ones he needed and trusted were already in place. Who would figure that the Americans would knowingly tolerate Muslims in their own government? Khrushchev was right years ago when he said “we will bury you from within.” Hillary sat down in her hotel room. Thinking hard she realized she needed some help from old friends. Pulling a disposable phone out of her bags, she punched in a number she had not used in a long time. “Erik, it’s me.” “Wow, been a long time my friend.” “Yes it has, do you still perform work on the side?” “Not often, but yes, especially for an old friend that may need me.” “If you give me your email address, I have some information to send to you. I have a problem that you may be able to fix for me.” “We are friends and I am available, but prices have increased a lot over the years.” “No matter, let me know how much you need. I do not care about the cost.” “I will text you the address.” Hanging up, she thought it all out carefully making some notes. Once she had it down, she sent it off to Erik. Reading the email, he decided to pull the Ethernet cable on his computer. It actually scared him. Crap! It was easy to take care of small time politicians, police, reporters, or any other people. This one was going to cause a lot of trouble though. Feinstein, Reid, and Pelosi, in that order! What the hell, these are her political friends! What Erik did not realize is that Hillary not only knew of his white supremacist history, she also had records and proof. He was being set up. Connecting the computer to the internet again, he started research on the three targets and started keeping track of where they went what they did. This might take a while.
Once Jim noticed the lack of police presence in the neighborhood, he figured it had been taken care of by that agent. Sitting on the porch with a cup of morning coffee and a smoke, he watched the Prius slowly driving down his street. Wondering who that was, he was not particularly interested since it was not a cop. That changed when the car pulled into his drive.
“Mr. Preston,” asked the man? “Yes, and you are?” “Sorry, my name is Dennis Crowley. I have something for you here. This is a real new one on me. I am from the IRS and have been tasked with bringing you this paperwork. Evidently, the government has owed you much money for a long time and I am here to clear this up and give you the balance of what is owed. By our records, the government owes you $100 million dollars. Do you have an attorney?”
Clearly shocked, Jim said “yes, let me call him.” “Ron, I have an IRS agent here that says the government owes me $100 million bucks in back money. Uh uh, OK, thanks.” “Yes sir, Mr. Crowley, can we go to his office?” “I would prefer that Mr. Preston.” “Good, just follow me and we will finish this.” On the way to the lawyer, Jim was excited and very sad. A multimillionaire with a dead family, ironic, he thought. Once at the lawyers office business went quickly. The IRS agent needed his signature on lots of paperwork, as did the lawyer. “What about taxes said Jim?” “Oh, “said Mr. Crowley, “evidently, that has already been accounted for. This money is what is left. Now, here is an IRS check for the amount discussed. You take this to a bank and they call IRS with these codes on the check. It will be immediately verified and transacted.” “Immediately”, asked Jim? “Oh yes, we want it done and out of our way. Now we can clear our records. If you do not have any other questions, I will be on my way.” “Thank you Mr. Crowley, I cannot think of anything further,” said Ron and Jim nodded. After the IRS guy left they stared at each other in absolute shock.
“Wow”, said Jim, “that was fast!” “Yeah” said Ron,” I have never had anything like that happen.” “Shall we go to the bank and process this?” “Yes, but you have some tough decisions now.” “What”, asked Jim? “Well, you will need an accountant, you have a lawyer, and the money may have to be moved around because if the bank goes under, the FDIC only guarantees it to $100 thousand dollars.” “Oh yeah, “said Jim. “I will need an accountant.” “One of the guys in the mag is an accountant isn’t he?” “Yes, that would be Stanley Ridgeway. Let me call him.”
“I remember you,” said Stanley; “we were talking last year camping out near the lake.” “Oh yeah said Ron.” “Why don’t you guys just come over to my house? I have everything we need right here.” After giving Ron the address, they hung up and Ron and Jim left. It was only a couple of miles to Stanley’s house. “Usually clients have to wait a couple of weeks for a first appointment, but since you are a mag member...” Thank you, it is an emergency and you will see what we mean.” Jim had no idea what to do with that kind of money, other than some toys and paying off bills. Stanley’s wife had already taken the children into the other part of the house while they did business. “I heard rumors of your problem Jim, I am very sorry to hear about it.” “Thank you Stanley, but I cannot talk about any of it now. I need advice on what to do with money.” “Sure, that is what I do. Are you looking for advice or to hire an accountant?” “I think I need to hire you. Advice will not go far enough for this.” “Good then, I have the time for a new client. Here are the papers I need you to read and sign to verify that I am your accountant. That and all the legal crap required.” Jim did not bother reading any of it, he just signed on the X’s. “Uh, Jim, maybe you should read that stuff. It verifies what I am going to charge you and what I can and cannot do.” “That’s OK” said Jim, “I know you belong to the mag and I am a new member. Besides, I need serious help right now. I do not want to take any chances on a total stranger.”
“Well, OK then, what do we have?” Handing him the IRS check, Ron smiled and said, “What can you do with that Stanley?” Mouth wide open, Stanley just stared at the check. “Should I ask anything about the money? Being from IRS, I am sure it is legal. Holy shit!” “No, you know all you need to, and taxes have already been taken care of, here is the paperwork.” Amazed, Stanley read through the paperwork. “Wow, it is all covered here! Basically, that is all free and clear money. Sure would like to hear that story, or maybe not. Do you have an account Jim?” “Yes, I belong to 1st Fed.” “OK, You are my client now. I have basic fees and a recurring bill for retaining me. I also charge per transaction that you need me to take care of. I basically charge $100 a month retainer and .5% of the transaction. I am not going to charge you for today’s interview.” “That’s OK” said Jim, “charge me whatever you need to. As you said, this is free and clear money.” “Let’s all three of us go to the bank and make Robinson, the banker, a happy man? Let me call him real quick,” said Stanley. He hung up and said “Mr. Robinson is waiting on us.” “Wow, that was quick, I figured he would be a pain the rear,” said Jim. Smiling, Stanley said “I told him the amount and if we did not have his immediate undivided attention, we would find a bank that did.” Laughing, they got in their vehicles and headed for the bank. As they went into the bank, it was obvious that the banker had everyone watching for them. As they sat down in the office, his secretary came in with coffee, tea, and cokes. The banker was ready to do whatever he had to in order to make them happy. Explaining what was needed, Stanley told him they wanted no press, or any trouble. They just wanted to deposit the check and verify that it would be taken care of properly. Smiling, Mr. Robinson said “sure, we can take care of it.” Jim said, “Stanley is my accountant, and Ron here is my attorney. As well as depositing this today, I want them paid what I owe them, right now.” “Uh, Mr. Preston, we hold checks for a week normally. This one might have to be longer because of the size of the check.” No, there are verification codes and a number to call on the check. It can be verified immediately and the funds available immediately,” said Stanley. Frowning, the banker said this is not a normal procedure. “Never mind,” said Jim, “let’s try another bank.” As they stood up, the banker all but started crying and said I am sorry we will do it the way you require. Jim said, “OK, but any problems at all with that account and you will be discussing this with my lawyer, after my money is removed from your bank. You understand?” “Yes sir! You are a priority customer. Just tell me what you want. Give me a few minutes here and get things set up.”
Calling the number on the check, he followed the instructions finding the codes were verified as good. “Sheila, can you come in here for a moment?” “Yes sir,” said Sheila, entering the room. “Mr. Preston’s account will be changing. I need to you to drop anything else you are doing and process this. It has priority over anything else.” With a question in her eyes, Sheila took the paperwork to start processing. Scanning the forms as she headed for the door she froze. “Uh, Mr. Robinson, is this correct?” “Yes Sheila, I verified it myself a few moments ago.” Excited and a little jealous, Sheila went through the paperwork and got it all ready for signatures. Laying a copy in front of each person, she started over the details while they read. Stanley said, “Yeah, this looks pretty normal. Nothing surprising in here at all.” They each signed the multiple copies and it was done. “Now, what about my friends here? I want them paid,” said Jim “Certainly,” said Mr. Robinson, “would you gentlemen like the amounts added to your accounts?” Stanley had a different bank account and gave him the information for his money and monthly payments. Ron’s money was transferred immediately, and they were done.
It had already been a long day. “How about dinner, my treat,” said Jim? “Sure, sounds good to me also,” said Ron, “I have not had a bite to eat all day.” Dinner was anticlimactic. The day had been a major stress on them all. After a good steak dinner and a couple of drinks, no one was interested in doing much else. With business all done, they separated going there own ways. Stanley said he would come up with a plan to spread Jim’s money safely out, or invest.
Sitting in his chair, Jim was thinking about his wife and son. Money doesn’t mean squat when you have lost your loved ones. The more he thought, the more despondent he got and the more he drank. Jim woke up to the sun in his eyes. He was still dressed and on the couch. A nice headache was building up from the night before. He suddenly remembered Jason and wondered about that. Curious, he called his father in law to check in.
“How are you doing Jim? You ok over there?” “As good as expected I guess, you got some time to talk?” “Yes, I will head over your way in a few minutes. Does that work?” “Great Jason, see you in a bit then.” Shuffling into the kitchen, Jim got him a tomato juice and some toast. As his mind was clearing he realized that the hangover was not much. After brewing some coffee, Jim went outside and sat on the porch. Erik waved at him from across the street and strolled over. “How are you doing Jim?” “As well as can be expected I think, still lost though.” “Yeah, I bet so,” said Erik. “You come up with any idea of what you want to do.” “Not really, I think my mind is starting to clear up a bit though. Yeah, I do have an idea now that I think on it.” “Well, if you need any help with anything just give me a yell,” said Erik as he headed home. “Thanks Erik, I sure will.” Sitting there with his mind going a mile a minute his father in law pulled up. “Coffee is in the kitchen Jason.” “Thanks that is a good idea.” Sitting down next to Jim he sipped the coffee. “There is nothing like a good porch and coffee in the morning Jim.” “Yeah, uh, you said we needed to talk during the funeral. Are you ok?” “I am fine. I just want to tell you a couple of things I just kind of locked it away all these years. Since I was a kid, I had always wanted to be in the Army. When I got old enough I joined.” “Wait, I had no idea you were army.” “No one knows but you now. Not even my wife.” “Ok, must be some story.” “Well, maybe. I joined the army and went to basic at Ft. leonardwood. This was back when the DI’s would knock you down if they were provoked.” “Wow, I heard of that, now they just yell in your face.” “They did that too. I had a DI named SGT Bolt. He was a total asshole and hated anyone taller than he was. Trouble was that he was shorter than most people. Somehow I got on his bad side. Whenever he saw me he would make me drop for 50. It did not matter where or when, if he saw me he would do it. I guess he wanted a reaction. Anyway, he did me a favor by that and I don’t think he meant to. HAHA When I got out of basic, I had muscles and I was in really good shape. I could do their marches and runs with no problem at all and the PT tests became a breeze. Just before graduation an officer addressed our group and announced that they were looking for volunteers. If we volunteered, we would be sent to Ft. Benning for testing and airborne training. Someone asked about the test. He explained that it was very strenuous and the tests consisted mainly of physical fitness tests. If we graduated from there we would be sent to ranger school and then to nam. For some reason, I volunteered. Funny thing, when I volunteered, SGT Bolt actually smiled and shook my hand. So I went through all that crap.” “Wait, you were an airborne ranger?” “In my mind I still am Jim, just older. Anyway, I spent two tours in nam with a ranger company and got assigned to lRRPS. After six years I got out then I got married.” “Wow, I had no idea!” “What I was thinking about is this. I am old and out of shape but I still know everything I ever needed to know about warfare.” “I want to help paying them back and I know you are going to do it sooner or later.” “Another thing that happened over the last few days I am going to tell you but It cannot go any farther.” Jim explained about the money and agreement with the government and then said, “so if there is anything you two need, let me know. I cannot spend it all anyway.” Jason laughed and said “I do appreciate that, but I cannot think of anything off the bat.” “Let me know the Christmas list then.” “I will and by the way Jim, I want to help. If you need my help or advice or planning, let me know ok?” “I sure will. Thanks Jason, it is nice to know I am not alone in this.” “I gotta go Jim. Remember me” “I will, see you later.”
Lighting up another smoke, Jim called Rocco. “Hey Rocco,” you busy? “Not at all, you want to come over. “ “Yeah, I want to talk to you about a couple of things.” He got to Rocco’s and Rocco had a cup of coffee waiting on him. “Hey thanks! I never get enough coffee.” “How you doing Jim?” “ Well, things have progressed and I am a little better. I don’t think I will ever get over my wife and son though.” “I don’t think so either Jim. I cannot imagine that kind of pain.” “You mentioned a buy in for the mag Rocco. What do you need for that? I am wanting to get on board with you all. It surprised me that the lawyer was a member, ha-ha.” “Yeah, he has been with us a while now. He is a good shooter too. We have a basic buy in and you are responsible for your own supplies and equipment, which we demand you have on hand. In fact, we have a list of items that are required, and a list of things that are nice to have.” “Sounds good, look, I can only tell you so much, but money is no problem.” “They settled this quick?” “Yeah, that lawyer is good he said laughing. As far as me, the police, and the murders of my family, it is all legally over. They settled and I cannot talk much right now.” “OK Jim, I won’t even ask.” “As far as the buy in Rocco, I have an idea. Instead of charging me for the buy in, how about I finance the shelter and anything else you want?” “What! Wow, you must have cleaned up on them! I bet everyone will go along with that without any disagreements. What do you have in mind?” “You go ahead and arrange whatever we need out there for all of us. I do not care how much it costs. In fact, to start out, how about I give you a $1 million dollar budget. If we need more after that it is no problem.” Choking on his coffee, Rocco sat there staring in disbelief. “Are you serious Jim? That is too much money! You need to wait a bit before you start blowing it all!” “No Rocco, I can do this 100 times over. And I want the shelter and everything done right, not half assed.” “Shit,” said Rocco. Smiling at Rocco, Jim said,” give me the lists of what is needed and I will get started. You just arrange what you want out there and let me know how much. Let me know also when the meetings or outings are and I will be there.” “Sure Jim, we sure do appreciate this.” “I got the better deal Rocco; I think you guys will help me keep my sanity.” On his way home, Jim was thinking this through. He decided to lay low and not cause problems. He was going to prepare with the mag. He was also going to find out what was going on with the French police and what they were doing here and most especially who killed his family. He wanted a name and face, and his pound of flesh.
Kansas City was very close. He decided he would go there and buy whatever he needed for the mag lists. Should he hire a private investigator? It had been less than a month. Jim still had no idea what to do with his life. To him, his life was completely empty. If it were not for friends and neighbors he would either be in prison for murder or dead, one or the other. Sitting at his table with a fresh pot of coffee, Jim read the literature and suggestion from Rocco. He also made a list of his own. Some of the websites that Rocco had pointed him too, discussed various scenarios that preppers concern themselves with. After three days, a headache, and just plain tired of reading, Jim decided to head for the city and shop.
He sat down and made a fast list of what he might want to buy and places to visit. Shopping was not one of his favorite pastimes, it would be a chore. Since he was not concerned about money anymore, the bulk of his shopping would be done at several large sports stores located in the city. He arranged what he wanted according to where he would be shopping. Then did some reading and went into the city for an early dinner and start shopping. Jim could eat breakfast anytime of the day or night, so he picked a place that served breakfast 24/7. It was delicious. In fact it was the first real meal he had had since his family was killed that he enjoyed. Once he thought of that he felt a little guilty and started to get depressed.
While Jim sat there nursing his coffee, his thoughts were interrupted by some angry words by the counter. A couple of sleazy guys were giving the waitress a hard time and she was trying to ignore them. Finally, one of them reached over and slapped her. “Don’t ignore me bitch!” Backing up, the girl stared with fear at the guys. They did not see Jim coming at first. “What you want asshole? This is none of your business, sit back down or I will have to teach you some manners too!” The thug told Jim. Smiling, Jim quickly slapped him as hard as he could, leaving more marks than were on the girl. Enraged, the punk pulled a knife and said he was going to carve Jim’s heart out. Just as sudden, Jim’s 1911 was aimed and steady at his head. “Now,” said Jim, “why don’t you both sit down there while we wait on the police.” Once Jim saw the police pull up, he snuck out the back door through the kitchen. He did not want any problems or notoriety.
Finding a store he wanted, he pulled into a parking lot. As he walked into the store, he suddenly thought of military surplus and army navy stores. He would add those to his list to look around. Out of habit, he was watching prices and thinking they were sure proud of their products. Then he started filling his cart anyway. Not knowing exactly what all he needed Jim ended up with much more than he thought he would get. Having a list was nice, but just like in a grocery store, you see things that you want but had not considered. They even had clothing that he had been thinking of. This place did not have any cold weather clothing out right now, but he found everything else he needed from water proof boots to camping gear of every description. Going through the checkout, Jim dropped $2000 quickly. A news stand outside the doors got his attention. It was a local classified paper that might have something in it he wanted.
Once back home, he unloaded his truck using the game cart he had just purchased. For that much money it sure did unload fast, he was thinking. Jim turned on the national news on TV and settled down to read the sale paper and the yellow pages for army navy stores. There seemed to be three of those stores on this side of the city and he wrote down their addresses to put in his GPS. Scanning the sales paper he picked up, he found there was a whole section on outdoor equipment. There was one that had a chemical toilet, but he decided to find a new one somewhere instead. One ad caught his attention. It was a gun repair shop. He wanted some guns, but did not want to buy from a dealer. He would rather keep it private what he wanted and decided a quick call would work. “Mr. Sanders?” “Yes, can I help you?” “I just saw your ad in the classifieds for gun repair. I do not need any repairs done, but was wondering if you knew of anyone that had some for sale.” He could tell that this request immediately put Mr. Sanders on guard, by the response. “Well, I don’t do any of that, I am not licensed to sell guns.” “That is fine sir, I was just thinking you might know someone that had a hunting rifle of some kind for sale. I would rather buy something used and broken in a little instead of new.” “Give me your name and number. I will let you know if I come across anything, OK?” “Sure,” Jim said, realizing he would never hear from the guy. He probably thought Jim was ATF or something. Hanging up, Jim realized he needed another way of doing this. On the off chance, he decided to call Rocco. “Hi Jim, what’s going on?” “I hate to keep bothering you, but I wondered if you know of anywhere to buy used guns.” “Yeah, I know a couple of people. Let me make a couple of calls and I will call you back OK.” “Sure Rocco, and thanks.” A little while later Rocco called back. “I got a guy for you to talk to Jim. You got a pen and paper?”
“Call this number. 816-555-5555. His name is Mike. I told him about you and he will help you out. Call him for the address when you go over.” “Thanks Rocco, I had no idea how to proceed on that front!” “No problem, be careful coming home.” “Later Rocco.” The number was answered by Mike. He gave him his name and mentioned Rocco. Mike gave him an address and directions. He was about an hour away. “Thanks Mike, I am leaving after I stop at a bank.” The address was easy and he pulled in front of Mike’s house. They introduced themselves and sat down to talk. Mike wanted to know how he knew Rocco and how long. He wanted to make sure he was not being set up. “I have known Rocco for a few years now. He has been trying to get me to join his mag, but I put it off until a few days ago.” “Well, I am a friend of his from long ago, I am glad to meet you. Let’s get on to this, we will go in my car.” Riding along, Mike mentioned what Rocco had said about his wife and son. Jim said he was still in shock and the only thing keeping him sane was directing his attention to the mag and he trusted Rocco. “I am real sorry to hear about that Jim. I have no idea what that might feel like. Here we are. This is my business building.” Jim looked around. His business consisted of a metal building outside town. There were two other people there. Jim could see they were armed. “You hit it lucky Jim, I have most of anything you want. The only drawback is prices on some of it, he laughed. Rocco said you could afford me, so let’s look around.” Inside, Jim found racks of hunting rifles and ammo. No handguns or anything exotic. Mike walked over to a display rack and moved it over. Underneath was a trapdoor. “This is where I keep more questionable items that the feds might get upset about.”
“I see what you mean Mike, and yeah, I will be spending some cash here today.” “I know Rocco well Jim. When my buyers place their orders, I prefer to deliver and Rocco and I have a safe way of doing it. I can have it delivered within a couple of days.” “That sounds good Mike, I don’t really want to carry a bunch of stuff in my truck unless I have to.” Jim thought about buying for the mag, but he decided to wait. He had no idea what they had or needed. So he just bought for himself. Once down stairs, Jim found several rows of weapons. They ranged from AKs and M16s, to M81s and M203s and claymores, not to mention a ton of handguns. “I keep all this down here because there are no records on anything, Mike said.” “Great, just what I am looking for. I like 1911s, but really could not afford them before, I want two. I also want a couple of Ak’s, and two of those 870 shotguns. These all look pretty new, are they used?” “Not really, I tested and cleaned them, but they are all almost new. I got a good deal at the time.” “OK, I will take those and do you have 5000 rounds for each?” “I sure do, no problem.” “Is that a 50 cal BMG?” “Yes it is. That one is brand new and it will cost about 11 grand.” “Wow, I don’t know if we would need one of those.” “The mag has one and it is old as dirt.” “All right, wrap that up too. Is that scope on it good?” “Oh yes, that is why it costs more because of the scope.” “I want the best for the mag Mike.” “Tell you what, I will give it to you for 9000, but I will donate the scope.” “You have any night vision?” “No, we don’t, other than the commercial junk anyone can buy. If you want I will see what I can come up with in the future.” “Please do, we could use them too.” “What else do you need Jim?” “I don’t really know, do you have any suggestions? You are familiar with what the mag has.” “Well, personally you have it covered for yourself. I would suggest a PTR, I think you might like that. But you have about all you need for now.” “OK, you want to ring it up?” “It is premium so don’t pass out on me OK?” “I am OK Mike, let her rip.” “Well, your total comes up to $48 grand, and I will give you a PTR since you just became a good customer, and I think I will be making more money off you later anyway. ha ha.” “Sounds good, I actually have cash. I have been pulling it out a little at a time. If anyone is wondering I am going to spend some time at the casinos and pretend to lose a lot more than I will.” “Cash? That sure makes it easier on me!” After the transaction, Mike asked him what his plans were now. “I don’t know Mike. I am going to finish my shopping here and then head back home. I don’t really know what to do with myself. Do you know any private investigators that cannot be bought or bribed?”

We went to New Orleans for a short vacation a couple of weeks ago. At least I got to see the statues of the confederate generals before they stared taking them down. I screwed up big time. We found place to park not far from Bourbon street and we started out to do some looking around and shopping. An hour later I suddenly thought, "where is the car?" For the next 5 hours we hunted for the car, me pushing my wife in her wheel chair. Finally about 10PM I was exhausted and saw some police. I had to explain my problem. They were real nice and helpful and found my care within half an hour. Very embarrassed I suddenly thought what if the SHTF and had no help and all on our own? That could have been really bad.

There's more than one use for a GPS (or a phone with GPS capability). Save the "current location" as "The Car" and take the GPS with you. If you don't remember where the car is, just ask the GPS and follow the directions. Remember to set the GPS to "walking" mode when you leave the car and then back to "driving" mode when you're ready to drive away.

Chapter 5
“Well, I know of one guy. Never used him myself, but I have heard that once you hire him he belongs to you until the job is done. He is older than us and used to be a Seal. So he must be pretty good. Here, his name is Gerald Sampson. He has an office in Winnfield. That is a suburb. Ah, here it is, Sampson Security, just call that number.”
Copying the number, Jim said, “Thanks a lot Mike, see you around the mag one day.”
“I will have all this delivered within the next two or three days. Contact Rocco for more information about the delivery.” On the way home Jim wondered if this was the right way to go. This guy might be able to find out more information for him about the police and the French. Calling his office, Jim made a 9AM appointment with Samson Security. He figured he would feel them out and see what went from there. Jim was tired. He decided to lay down and try to relax. While sleeping, the nightmares about his wife and son popped on vividly. Jim woke up in a sweat, angry at the police. Looking at the clock he discovered it was 6Am already. Wow, he thought, I got over 12 hours of sleep last night. After cleaning up and dressing, he headed out for breakfast. With a full belly and plenty of coffee he felt better. He was around an hour from that lawyer’s place, so he decided to head out. Early is always better than late he thought. After coming into Winnfield a little early, he decided to find more coffee. He liked strong coffee and found an espresso that was really good. Three shots of espresso and he was wide awake.
Checking out the offices, he could see that Sampson Security had a little money. It was not the dark office in a bad part of town like the old detective movies.
“Mr. Preston, welcome to my office. What can I do for you today?” “Mr. Sampson, I am glad to meet you. I have a problem and need someone to research it. I need someone that cannot be bought or threatened.”
Jim explained the situation as detailed as he could. He decided he had to tell this guy everything and hope that he would not screw him.
“Please call me Gerald. Can I call you Jim?”
“Sure, thank you.”
“Are you sure that you heard French being spoken?” “I know a few words, but I not many. It was French though.”
“OK, it might take a while. I will first start on the police themselves and check their back grounds. The fact that the government stepped in makes this a really odd situation.”
“I had wondered that said Jim. It doesn’t really make sense to me.” “Well , it could be something really simple but it makes no sense to me either, “ said Gerald. “I will let you know how it works out. Here are my fees.”
“Gerald, what if it is true? What do you think that means?”
“Tell you what Jim, I am going to charge you for this, but my fee will be very low. If what you said has any validity at all then we have a serious problem. I will let you know what is going on but there might be a point on this where I will just not go any farther. You worry me with this. If it is true, something is going on that could be dangerous for us all.”
“I got that feeling when I was dealing with them. Thanks Gerald, I will talk to you later then.”
Gerald had a fake ID setup in a nearby town. He had had it for a few years and never really needed it for anything. A name, bank account, and a fake address, there was no link at all to his real identity. He decided to use that while researching. He had a hinky feeling and it made him cautious. After two weeks of research Gerald had nothing on the police he had checked. They were all clean and as poor as police are. No extra money floating around or new purchases. Sims was different in a way. He had more money than the others, but not enough to raise any flags. His car was 8 years old and paid for. Their house was ordinary, not fancy. Something was odd though and Gerald could not put his finger on it. He thought it was a waste of time doing a criminal background check, since they were police officers, but he was at a wall here.
An hour later he sat staring at his computer. What the hell? It seems that 10 years ago, Sims had been involved in a child pornography ring along with officer Mills. Charges were dropped and they transferred from Boston to here. Both had moved here almost 10 years ago, took jobs with the department, got married, and went on. Hmm, leverage might work. Let’s see how Officer Mills reacts.
So the next day he started watching Mills. He had a particular schedule that he almost always followed each day. In a normal day, he worked from 6am to 5 pm. He then went to the gym for an hour. After that he went home, except on Tuesdays. Tuesdays he played poker with his brother in law and father in-law and some others. None of them were police though. Now, how to scare him into talking without being shot or set up by him and Simms. Gerald was thinking he hated to involve the guy’s in-laws, but he would have an edge if he showed up on poker night.
Three nights later, Gerald was sitting down the street watching. They were all there. He was giving them some time to have a couple of drinks and relax a bit before he went in. After an hour more, he walked to the door and switched on the mic to the recorder, then knocked. Officer Mills’ father answered the door. As he opened the door, Gerald produced a pistol and pushed him back inside telling him to be quiet, he just wanted to talk. Wide eyed and gasping the older man backed into the living room. As the others looked up they froze as they saw Gerald’s gun.
Gerald said “Just freeze! No one will get hurt and I will be gone in a minute or two. I just have a couple of questions for officer Mills here.”
Mill’s face turned red and he said “do you know who I am? I will have your ass in jail!”
“Yeah, I know exactly who you are and I have a couple of questions for you. You won’t like any of these questions, but for all our safety I think we will discuss them all together. Now first, slowly, put your weapons on the table. Very slowly or I will kill you right here.” Taking the guns, Gerald said “OK now, everyone relax. Now, just shut up and listen. Pops, you can sit down with them. Nobody do anything silly because I really do not want to kill anyone.”
“Mills, a little over 10 years ago in Boston, you and Sims had a little problem with your employer. You know what I am talking about?” “Hell no, everyone knows I worked there, but we transferred here!”
“Ah, so you do not want to discuss the reason you transferred? I can see why you did not want anyone to know that about you two. Tell me, do you still operate that way or did you quit back then?”
Mills was scared. No one knew about that! How the hell did this come out? Deciding silence was best, he just stared at Gerald and tried to look as if nothing was really wrong.
“All right Mills, here we go. You and Simms were arrested for child porn and child endangerment, the charges were somehow dropped and you both got transferred.”
“That is a fucking lie! Wherever did you get an idea like that? I will put you away in prison for this!”
Gerald had a little lie ready to shake him up. “How on earth would I know anything about that? Records were sealed, no charges, you both got away. Actually, it has taken me a long time to find you, but here I am.” Smiling as cold as he could he said, “I am one of the fathers of the girls you raped. My little girl committed suicide a year after you left. She had told me and her shrink both in detail about you.”
Mills turned pale and stuttered. “ I, I, I didn’t do anything! Simms is the one!” Then he had a sudden thought. “Are you going to kill me?” He said in absolute fear.
“Not unless I have to. I know you are scum and after I leave here, your in-laws and friends might want to talk to you. This is what I want. You do this for me and I will not hurt you or your family. I want Simms, I know he was the ringleader. And while we are at it, I was eavesdropping a few weeks ago and came across some French police working with you. What is that all about?”
“French, I have no idea what you are talking about.” “Look, my new friend, you will tell me everything I ask you or I will just go ask Simms, but you will not be around. You understand?” “I want everything you can tell me about Simms, and I want to know about the French also. Now!”
Looking up, Mills caught the stairs of his in-laws across the table. He knew he was done. “Simms has enough info on every officer, lawyer, and judge in town to make their lives hell if they do not follow his lead. With common criminals or court proceedings he ignores and does not care. If a friend of his is in trouble or a major drug case comes up, he wants it squashed. He controls the drugs for this whole area. The French were a surprise. I don’t really know what was going on with them. The DOJ and the State Department said that we would receive them, house them, and they would train with us on the job. When they got here, we discovered that they answered to someone else in the DOJ. They spent almost all their time going through records and making notes. They were also looking at all the CHL applications and licenses to see who had them or who might have weapons. Then one night the fuckers went to the wrong address and killed a woman and her child.
Gerald’s’ throat was dry. He could only imagine what was going on. “Then what happened” said Gerald?
“The French were immediately recalled to where ever they were from and we were told that we would settle out of court with the husband, but there would be a complete blackout of info about it.”
His father in law butted in. “Wait a minute. You mean that double murder a few weeks back where someone killed a woman and her little boy? They even killed the dog!”
“Dad, it was not me! The French killed them.”
“Not you? We find out you were molesting little kids and now you are an accomplice in a murder of an innocent woman and boy! And the French! What the hell are they doing here in our country doing that?”
Gerald could tell that the man’s father in-law was pretty angry. “Stop, “said Gerald. “Now I don’t really care how you handle your son in law sir, and I do not plan on hurting any of you. This punk needs to stay out of my way and not say a word to Simms or anyone else. If Simms is warned in any way, I will kill whoever leaks the info, and you, officer mills will be first. Do we understand each other?”
All of them nodded to Gerald. “OK then, I will take my leave and no you cannot have your guns back Mills. Simms owes me for my daughter, I aim to get revenge.” Backing out of the house, he could hear the uproar as the family started yelling at Mills. Well, his life is not going to be easy anytime soon. He had information and yes it was true about the French, but he was not sure how to proceed without raising flags. This could be dangerous.
He decided to call Jim and let him know what he found, although it was not really much. Then he suddenly decided this was something that would not be safe to talk about over the phone. Calling Jim he asked him if he wanted to look at some property he had information on. Curious and not quite understanding Jim said, “uh sure, come on by.”
“Good, I will be there in a few.”
Once he was with Jim and heading out of town, Gerald told him what was going on and why he decided to pick him up. “ I just had an interesting meeting with one of the officers. He verified that the French officers were there and then got recalled after the shooting. That is as far as I got though right now. If it makes you feel any better at all, the French are the ones that killed your family. The police are scum, but they did not do that.”
“Thanks Gerald, I do appreciate that, what is next?”
Well, I am going to send you a bill, hmm better yet, drop by the office with 300 bucks cash and we will be even. That way no one will know you hired me for this. As for what is next, I don’t know. I ask you not to say anything about this to anyone. OK?”
“Why, you going to drop it?”
“No, I am pursuing this. For right now, it may be best for you to be out of this. Who knows, I might need help hiding out if it goes really bad for me.”
“Anytime Gerald, you think it might be that bad?”
“If this goes all the way to the DOJ or secretary of state, yeah, it could get really bad.”
“You know, I have this thought. Why would they send UN police to a town like this? It seems really odd.”
“Yeah, it all seems odd Jim. In fact, you just gave me an idea. I used to be a cop and I do have friends in different locations. I wonder if anyone else is getting these UN types visiting them.”
“I think you might be onto something Gerald. Wow, this could signal something really bad!” “Something is going on that might not be good for anyone. There is something else that just occurred to me. If all this started with the president, DOJ, Secretary of State or anyone like that it may be useless to go any farther locally.”
“Can you find out anything from DC or any place like that?”
“I don’t really have contacts like that, but I do know some police up in that area. I am just going to sound some people out.” “Well, be careful Gerald.” President Hussain sat in his office and was not in a very good mood. He was waiting on a representative from the UN to show up and he knew that it would be bad. If the truth be known, he was a little scared. They could wreck his career and put him in prison.
“Mr. President,” said Shirley, his office manager, “Ambassador Schmidt from the UN is here.”
“Thank you Shirley, send him in.”
Standing up he welcomed Schmidt and asked him to have a seat. “What can I do for you Ambassador?” He was interrupted.
“You know why I am here. You agreed to these advisers being placed in some of your police departments to learn how you people did things in your rural communities.” “Just one minute! If your goons had not been so trigger happy they would still be in place. You need to make sure none of your other teams act like that! They need to stay in the back ground, otherwise this will not go well.”
“Do not threaten me. My teams will do as they are trained. If you Americans threaten anyone with a gun they will shoot. Stupid people should not be allowed to have guns anyway. We will do as agreed before. Nothing will change and you will follow along. Unless you want replaced?”
“No, no Mr. Schmidt, you are right, but we should keep a low profile for now.”
“Yes, it is unfortunate that this happened this early in the plan. Just remember, there is proof of certain activities and information about you personally that would be very upsetting to you and your supporters.” “I understand. It will work out.”
“I know it will.”
As Schmidt left, the President was both angry and scared. They would kill him and his family if he gave them reason or turn loose certain documents that he had hidden so carefully. It still galled him to be treated like that from a German pig. The only thing worse was dealing with his sec of state!
Getting into his limo, Schmidt thought to himself that this president was one controllable black. Well, soon enough he would be gone, he thought, smiling to himself.
Jim sat on the porch with a morning cup of coffee. Most everything was taken care of. He was not sure what to do with himself. He was rich and alone and missed his family. This house was really depressing. He saw his wife and son every time he looked around. He had a sudden thought. I don’t have to live here. I can live anywhere I want. Yes, maybe it was time to get on with things. He had not forgotten the police though. Pulling up Google earth, he looked at the property that Rocco and the mag owned. He would like be move out there somewhere and start fresh. He decided to call Darlene. She had sold them this house and knew the area really well. “Hi Jim, it is nice to hear your voice. I am so sorry to hear what happened to your wife and son.”
“I am adjusting and I thought I might need your help.”
“Well, I have nothing going on today, drop by anytime.”
“Mills, what is wrong with you today? You look like you have seen a ghost?”
“Ah, nothing, just go a problem nagging me.”
Staring into Mill’s face, Simms could see something was really wrong. He knew his partner well. “Look, we have been partners for a lot of years. Something is seriously wrong, I can tell.”
Breaking down, Mills told him everything. As he went through the story Simms stomach dropped. The idea that any of that would get out terrified him.
“So, he wants me does he? You don’t know who he is?”
“No idea, he did not give his name and he was new in town.”
“We will have to be careful then. What did he look like? Anything in particular that will stand out?”
“A scar on his right cheek, that is all.”
“Well, that is something. If he shows up he will have to be taken care of.”
Deciding he might as well get the day started, Jim headed for the truck. After cussing it for a half hour it finally started. He loved that truck, but it was getting older and cranky. He had bought it used about 5 years ago. A 1998 dodge, it had a lot of miles. Walking into Darlene’s office he braced for her poor Jim greeting, but for some reason she just went on with their business. He was relieved.
“What can I do for you Jim?” “A couple of things Darlene, I want to sell the house. I get depressed a lot there lately. I also want to buy some property.”
“Wow, a lot going on here. What do you want for the house and when will it be available for show, and when will you be out? Have you thought of those yet?”
“Uh, no. Not at all, but the appraised value was 305 grand a couple of years ago. We paid 215 grand and I owe about half that still. I am motivated to be out of it. In fact, I might rent a small apartment temporarily. I can be out of it in 3 weeks at most.” “OK, Jim, are you going to clean it or hire that done?”
“I will hire it done. Do you know anyone?”
“Yes, I have a list of people that do that.” “How about I move, you arrange the cleaning and just add that in the bill?”
“Done, I will get a new appraisal going real quick and take care of everything.”
“That is a relief, thank you Darlene.”
“What are you looking for in property?”
“Could you pop up Google earth? I have an area I am interested in.” As Jim showed her the area he was looking at, he said I don’t know if anything out there is for sale, but I really like that area. “Let me look it up real quick. Let’s see, they call that area Cranston Hills. Over here is national forest. There is 5 acres here that has been on the market for a few years now. There is no power out there, it costs too much and no one seems to be interested. They are asking 5000. This other property still belongs to the Cranston’s. That is about 800 acres, but it is not listed as for sale. That is about all there is out there.” “Do you think that Cranston will sell?”
“I have no idea, but I will check on it if you want.”
“Please check.”
“Ok, If they are willing, when do you want to look at the property?”
“You just call and I will be here.”
“Is that all you need?”
“Right now that is perfect Darlene, thank you.”
As he left Darlene was thinking it was probably too early to chase him, but he is good looking and single now. Jim was thinking along the same lines and feeling guilty. It has only been a few weeks. I am a real bastard. Those legs though.
Three days later, Darlene had an answer that Jim might like. Calling him, “Jim, you want to look at that Cranston property? He will sell, I will explain it on the way. And I have an offer on your house, I will tell you about that also.”
“Great Darlene, I will pick you up in a few minutes, OK?”
“Sure, but we can take my car if you want?”
“No, I want the feel of the road and would rather drive.”
“OK then, I got maps and a plat of the property. No one is there so we do not have to arrange anything.”
As Jim was driving, Darlene explained the situations to him. “Since we have not had much chance to talk in the last couple of days things have changed a little. The value of your house and property has gone up a little. It is now worth $425,000. The people that are interested are offering you $390000. For that they will take it as is and do not worry about cleaning.”
“They don't want to see inside? That sounds silly.”
“Well, they said they had known you and your family for a few years and know what the inside was like already. Do you know Ben and Sheila Rogers?”
“I sure do, they have been over quite a few times.”
“Tell you what, if they want it, they can have it for what they offered. That would be keeping it with friends. I had no idea. In that case, I can be out as soon as I find a place to stay.”
“Good, I will take care of it them.”
“The owner of this property we are going to is William Cranston. He is the only Cranston left and owns the whole thing. His great granddad bought the property and when William got out of college he wanted more of a city life. Evidently he has not been out there for 2 years even to look. He said all he does is pay taxes on it and stated he should have already gotten rid of it. The total acreage is 810 acres, 815 if you count that 5 acres that is for sale. He had given that to an old family friend. So you could end up with that whole area, if you wanted to.”
“How much is he asking.”
Sighing, she said “well, it is a lot of money. He wants a thousand an acre, which is actually pretty good, but still a lot of money.”
Turning that over in his mind Jim thought yeah, I can afford that. “Well, Darlene, let’s see what he is selling then.”
As he drove she pointed out the area that was being built up. It was the mag area she was pointing at. He was pleased. On a little farther she told him to pull up to a run-down cabin and parked. “This is the 5 acres. No one is living here anymore. A little run down, don't you think?”
“Yes it is, the place needs leveled.”
“Here are maps of the area. I do not know too much about it. There are some high hills and some canyons over here. There are supposed to be two year round springs. There is an old house up here and there used to be a road of sorts.”
“Well, try to guide me and will see if we can find the house.”

Sure am glad you all like it. I came to a point that I had read just about everything and ran out of books. What do you do when you cannot find a new one to read? You try writing. lol I like to hit yard sales, thrift sales, and used book stores, I have a couple dozen on my dresser waiting to be read. Over the years, I have one book I bought in '68, I have accumulated a lot of books. Best guess? Several hundred (1000+?) books are in boxes in storage and on shelves. My excuse for not typing up more of my stories is that I am busy reading yours and others well written stories. Don't stop writing, I will get them typed up and posted/published.

Chapter 6
Finding the old road was not a problem at all. It wound from the front 5 acre property on into the hills. It was overgrown with weeds and they saw some deer run off. After a bit they could see a roof poking up through some trees. Stopping, they got out and started looking around. The house was in bad shape on the outside, but inside the damage was not real apparent. The kitchen was a mess with busted pipes and water stains on the floor. He was thinking he could live there if he had to while fixing things up. Outside in a shed there was an old military 50K generator. It did not look like it would ever run. The shed enclosing it just needed a little work.
“Where do you think they got their water Darlene? There is supposed to be a well and a spring on the other side of the house. Maybe the broken pipes go to that.” Walking around the house the well was easy to find. In fact, the well looked in much better shape than anything else. Looking down into the well with a flashlight, they could see it had plenty of water and it has a slight currant to it. Thinking that the spring fed the well, Jim was very happy at that idea. Walking over to the barn they found it in pretty good condition. Other than a lot of debris and a few years of dirt piling up by the doors, it looked like a cleaning would fix most of it.
Pulling the map of the area out that she had given him, he noted where the house and barn were and the general layout of the property itself.
“Tell you what Darlene, I want to try driving out a little farther and then we can go back.”
“Sure, you are the customer, do what you want.”
Jim headed off to where the foothills were on the map. He just wanted to see how high they were. He really liked the gullies and hills. He stopped in a low spot and they proceeded to get out. Within a moment Darlene screamed and jumped back into the truck.
“What’s wrong?”
“A snake, I will wait here for you!”
“I won’t be long.” He did pick up a stick, just in case there were more snakes though. Walking through a dry wash he was looking up at the sides of the hills. Pleased with the colors and rocks, he smiled thinking this was a great place. As he stepped past a large boulder, something black caught his attention. Wow, no way! Staring, he thought, I hope that is a useable cave. Excitedly he went to the entrance wishing he had a flashlight. He could see in a ways, but not very far. Walking back to the truck Jim decided to keep the cave information to himself. He did want the property though, bad.
“What do you think Jim? Are you interested in the property?”
“I don't know, the barn can be fixed, but the rest of it needs demolished.” “Well, they are asking 815 grand. What kind of offer would you be willing to make?”
“Tell you what Darlene, tell then I will give them 800 for the property. I want to close as fast as possible and I will be paying them in cash or cashier’s check, whatever they want. There will not be a need for a loan. I also want the other five acres and will pay their asking price for it and I want it done quickly for cash also. How about that?”
Stunned, Darlene just sat there staring at him. “Uh, sure, cash, fast, are you sure Jim?”
“Oh yes, I like the property. I want to be alone and this will be perfect.”
“I will call and discuss it with them when we get back to the office.” Once they got back to the office, Jim let her out and said that he was going over for coffee and a sandwich at the diner across the street. “Would you give me a call when they give you an answer?”
“Sure, I should know something within a few minutes. He is actually waiting on my call.”
“I know it is less than you wanted Mr. Cranston, but he has cash and will purchase the property. I am not so sure will find other buyers very quickly. Do you want to make a counter offer?”
“No, I will take the cash offer and the sale to be done as soon as possible.”
“I will have you paperwork by morning for your signature Mr. Cranston.”
“Thank you.”
Wow, that was fast she thought, instead of calling, she decided to go over to the diner and have some coffee also and tell him what happened. Sliding onto a stool next to him she ordered a cup of coffee.
“That was fast Darlene, did they turn it down?”
“No, he wants your money. I will have paperwork for him to sign delivered to him in the morning.” “Excellent! When do I pay? I will need to hit the bank and get some cash.”
“I think a certified check would be better Jim. You can give it to me when you sign your part of the contract.”
“Sounds good, I will get the check now. See you soon, yell when you need my signature.”
“I will Jim, thank you. I will be making a profit myself.”
“Turning around, Jim asked, just what percentage will you get?”
Smiling, she said, “Six percent, almost 50 thousand.” Laughing he walked out.
She sat there stunned. She had not figured it out before and had forgotten her share of the sale. Wow! At that point she paid for her coffee and went to the office to do all the paperwork, as carefully as she could. Calling Mr. Cranston back, she said that the buyer was happy and just needed to know when to provide a certified check.
“Tell you what, that is a lot of money and I would like this done quickly also. What time do you open tomorrow?” “I am always here by 9 AM.”
“Great, keep the paperwork there. I will meet you at your office at 9Am and I will have the deed and anything else you want.”
“That would speed it up a lot, I will notify the buyer and he can be here at 9 in the morning also.”
Excitedly, she called Jim. “You need to get your money handy Jim. The seller will be in my office at 9 AM tomorrow with all his paperwork. Can you come by at the same time? We can do it all then. Good, see you in the morning.”
Jim could hardly sleep he was so excited.
“The next morning Jim was right on time. Evidently Darlene could not sleep either, she was already there working down a pot of coffee.
“HI Jim!”
“Hi Darlene, going to be an interesting day, isn't it?”
“It sure is!”
Halfway through a cup of coffee, a knock on the door and Mr. Cranston introduced himself. He brought his lawyer along.
“Mr. Wills here is just to make sure we get through things OK. That is a lot of money and I don't think any of us want any mistakes.”
“You are right about that Jim said. Just to make sure we are still on the same page, the amount agreed upon was 800,000 for the whole thing, right?”
“Yes, that is the agreement and I have no objections.”
“Relieved, Jim said let’s get it on then!”
Going over the paperwork with them all, Darlene covered everything she could possibly imagine. There were no objections from anyone. Mr. Mills produced the deed and bill of sale and their paperwork. Jim produced the certified check for $800,000. Everybody was smiling.
“I almost forgot this” said Mr. Mills, producing some other papers.
“What is that,” said Jim, suddenly nervous.
“Just separate paperwork giving you all of the mineral rights and things like that. We forgot to discuss it, but I don't want anything to do with it at all.”
“Thank you said Jim.” Darlene looked a little shook up. She had forgotten that part. Finally, all the paperwork was signed and copied and the check exchanged hands.
“Looks like you are the owner of a new homestead Jim.”
Jim just grinned.
After everyone else left, Darlene told said, ”I have to file this to make it all legal and legit. But the property is yours. I will do that today, and it should be on their books within a day or two. I will keep on them until that is done.”
“Thank you so much Darlene! If it were not so early I would have a couple of drinks!”
“I know what you mean. You have a great day Jim. I got to go deposit my money off this deal.”
Really pleased with himself and excited, Jim called Rocco.
“HI Jim, how are you doing? I have not heard from you in a few days.”
“I am your neighbor as of this morning.”
“Neighbor, what do you mean?”
“That 815 acres to your south, I just bought it! And the mag can have free run of it.”
Rocco was shocked. “Wow Jim! That is great! That was the only area out here we were not sure of. Are you going to move out there?”
“Yes, I am going to get a trailer and move out there, and then I will build.”
“I am amazed,” said Rocco! “Welcome to the neighborhood!”
Hanging up, Jim suddenly remembered the other 5 acres. He went back over to the office and found Darlene just coming back from the bank.
“Darlene, we forgot about the 5 acres.”
“Oh my, things went so fast that yes we both forgot that. I will take care of it right now!”
“Thanks Darlene, let me know when you want me. Here is the 5000 certified check for that property. Just hang on to it until you need it.”
“Thanks Jim! I will let you know when we can close on your house Jim. Once that is done, you will be all moved and done.”
As he left, Darlene got to thinking. I screwed up twice today on this. Not going to let it happen again. She jotted down a note about mineral rights for that 5 acres also.
Jim suddenly thought he needed a place to stay. He would have to think about that. He did not want to stay at the mag. I can buy an RV or something to use until the house is built. That way he could enjoy the property right away and work on a plan. Unlocking his truck, he suddenly had the feeling he was being watched. Looking over to the side he saw Simms. They just stared at each other. Feeling good, Jim flipped Simms off and got in the truck.
As he left, Simms just sat there staring. He might be a problem Jim thought.
Simms was mad. His life was ruined and that asshole was worth millions. He had been out with Mills and when he got drunk Mills told him what happened during poker night. In the end though, he blamed Jim for everything imaginable.
The next morning Jim bought a small pull behind RV and started moving what he wanted to keep onto the trailer. It was tough, much tougher than he thought it would be. He took all the pictures, kitchen equipment, towels and his clothes. He emptied the garage of his stuff. He did not touch the clothes and stuff that belonged to his son and wife. He just could not. Well, I am going to leave the rest of the stuff here and they can keep it or get rid of it. Leaving, he dropped by Darlene’s and gave her the keys.
“I am moved out already. I left a lot of stuff I just cannot get myself to go through. They are welcome to keep anything or get rid of it.”
“I am sorry Jim that must have been tough. You sure you got everything you need out?”
“Yeah, I will not be going back. They can have the house anytime they want.”
“OK, I will finish arrangements and let you know.” “Thanks Darlene, you can reach me on my cell phone.”
As he left Darlene watched him with pity. That must be really tough to go through. On the way out of town, Jim stopped at Kramer’s, a storage facility. After renting an area, he pulled around and unloaded. He decided to take the trailer out and leave it on his new property, then go to the mag for the day. He did not notice the pickup following him from a distance.
Simms was still angry. He and Mills were both homeless, their families had kicked them out and he hated Jim with every ounce he had. He did not know exactly what he would do, but he was just following Jim and getting more angry. Pulling over, he saw Jim pull onto the property and over to the barn. He had already heard about all these acres Jim bought and that made him even angrier. Out of control, he pulled up closer and got out of the vehicle, along with his shotgun. Going around the barn he suddenly decided to end this bastard and leave his body out here. No one would know. Peaking through the door, he saw Jim working on something in the back. Slowly he eased into the barn, coming around the tack hanging on one wall.
Ready to fire, he yelled at Jim. “Preston, you son of a bitch!” click
Jim jerked around and instantly realized that the gun did not have a round jacked into it. Pulling the 1911, Jim put three rounds into Simms before he could jack a round into his shotgun. Shaking, Jim sat down staring at Simms. High on adrenaline, he was scared, shocked, angry and just plain freaking out. A few minutes later he had calmed down enough to think. He was getting ready to call the police when he stopped. He had nothing but enemies at that police department. He did not want to involve Rocco or the mag in this. He did not think anyone knew the guy was out here, it was personal. Picking through his pockets, he found his cell phone and removed the battery from it and stuck it back into Simms pockets. Leaving him there in the dirt, he closed the barn doors and looked around. Not a soul to be seen. Putting on a long sleeve shirt and a pair of gloves, he carefully he walked over to Simms’s truck and got in. Starting it up, he decided to take it down a ways off his property. There was an old road that went to the lake. When the lake had filled years ago, the road was mostly covered and useless. Getting out of the vehicle, he put it in drive and shut the door. The old truck lumbered down the roadway. It was a little steep before it got to the water and the truck picked up a little speed. Hitting the water it started to slow down and stop. A moment later it tipped off the edge of the buried pavement and submerged quickly. It was a good 30 feet from the edge of the road to where the bottom was. Walking back, Jim decided to keep the shirt and gloves till he figured out what to do with the body. A quick trip in the truck, but a slow walk for a good 5 miles he figured. He was worried, but did not think he missed anything in the truck. Oh well, done now. Getting back to his ranch, as he thought of it now, he brought out an old army blanket he had found in the barn. It was not worth much but would be sturdy enough for what he wanted. Looking around, he found some plastic and rolled Simms into it. Then he wrapped him in the blanket and loaded him in the back of his own truck. Going back into the barn, he got a shovel and picked up all the dirt that Simms might have had contact with and made several trips to his truck with the wheelbarrow. After that was done, he drug a large branch into the barn and proceeded to sweep the barn with it. That done, he left all the doors and windows of the barn open and put the limb in the back of the truck also. Jim took off with his cargo. He had not had time to really look the property over very well and was looking for a spot. On the far side of his property by the hills he came to a crevasse in the rock that was quite wide. Deciding to take a look, he climbed into the crevasse found it level enough on the other side for walking. After a few yards it started to drop off a little. Suddenly he came to a spot where rocks had broken loose and slid down. One thing though, the rocks had uncovered a very deep pit. Deciding quickly, Jim went back for Simms. It was a lot of work to get him there, but finally he dropped Simms over the edge. It actually took a few seconds to hear him hit the bottom. Looking around the top, he noticed it really was a dangerous place. It looked like a lot of other rocks were about to collapse. He went around behind the side of the cliff, carefully pushed and prodded them. It seemed like it took forever, but the rocks gave loose with a roar and went on down into the crevasse. Once down, he carefully worked his way back to where he thought the pit was. It was completely gone and buried. Now, to get rid of the other stuff and my clothes. Jim decided to burn everything he had on him when he got back to the house. Once home, he stripped at the burn barrel and put everything inside including his boots and socks. Once he was stripped down he took a water hose and washed as well as he possibly could. Being just a little paranoid, he washed out the truck just in case and washed himself again. Putting on some other clothes from his bag he realized he had no shoes handy and would have to go to the storage building. First though, Jim set the burn barrel on fire and made sure it was going well. He drove over to the storage area and found another pair of boots. They were some old ones, but would do. Starting for the mag to spend the night, he worried about the burn barrel and decided to go back to check. Most of the clothing had burned pretty well, but to be sure he raked it around and poured a little gas on it and saturated what was left of the boots. Jim sat down in his truck and lit a smoke. The past few hours suddenly caught up with him and his nerves were stretched to their max. This is the first time I had ever killed anyone. After a couple more smokes, Jim had himself under control. He had no choice, the bastard was going to kill him. And the police hated him. They would love an excuse to lock him away. At that, Jim headed over to the mag.
Finding himself alone at the mag, he decided to fix some dinner have a drink and chill out. In spite of everything, he was so exhausted from the day he slept all night. The next morning he realized yesterday had really happened. After two days he decided to make an appearance. He wanted a cooked meal in the restaurant. Driving into town, he stopped and decided on breakfast. Sipping his coffee, he saw Darlene come in and waved at her.
“Have a seat,” he said.
“Thank you. Are you enjoying your property yet?”
“I sure am. It is so peaceful and quiet out there.”
As his breakfast arrived, two officers came in and sat down. They kept looking at him. One left and went out to their care, then came back in. A few minutes later, Captain Reynolds came in.
Walking over to Jim, he said “may I sit down?”
Staring at him hard Jim said “go ahead, but you know you are not supposed to bother me or any of my friends.”
“Yes, this is something different, I was hoping for your help.”
“My help? I think you better get it off your chest before I get any more upset.”
“Have you seen Commissioner Simms? He has been missing for the last couple of days.”
“No, I have not, and I better not either. He needs to leave me alone,” Jim said very seriously.
I understand, I was hoping you might have seen him. “Evidently, a few nights ago they had a serious problem between him and his in-laws.”
“Sorry, but not my problem and I want nothing to do with him or his family.”
“Thank you for your help” he said as Reynolds got up and left. The other police officers left also.
“What the hell,” said Darlene?
“I have no idea. I just want them to leave me alone.”
Leaving the restaurant Jim was relieved. He was very hopeful they would not connect anything with him. He thought about going out to recheck where he put Simms. Then he remembered from somewhere that going back to the scene of the crime was a common mistake criminals made. He was hoping that Simms was the only one crazy enough to go as far as he had. I think I will move on out to my property. I need to jump into this and start planning what to do. At that, he turned around and went grocery shopping. He also bought some beer and a carton of smokes. Once back to his new home he opened up the RV and stocked it with his food. Firing up a small grill he thought well, this will work for now, but I need the septic checked over, the water lines from the spring redone, and see if that generator is any good. I will work on that in the morning, tonight it is eat and relax. After finishing his steak, potato, and a salad, his stomach was full. It was quiet and peaceful out here. The only fly in the ointment was the problem with Simms. Then again, that problem was now gone. It really was nice out here.

Sigh, dang! Forgot the shotgun! Or maybe he shoved it up Simms' rear end first? He better find and get rid of that evidence.

Jim might want to go fishing. I bet that place where the road runs into the lake would be a good place to launch a boat (truck and boat trailer would cover any tracks left from Simms' truck). Discreetly dropping the shotgun about where the truck went down when he returns. Or if he doesn't want to get a boat now, just fish from the bank until after dark then toss the wiped down shotgun towards the truck.
If you do a rewrite, just dump the shotgun with the wheelbarrows of soil in the pit with Simms. Taking the wheelbarrow will make it easier to move the body. He does need pick up some cleaning supplies, dish soap, bleach, laundry soap, scrubbers, spray bottles. The wheelbarrow can be sprayed with bleach then cleaned with soap which will remove any DNA evidence.

Chapter 7
The next morning went pretty well. He made arrangements to have a perk test for a septic tank. By noon he had the water lines done. It had been pretty simple. The generator was not so good, but he decided to buy a new one. Hell, he could sure afford it. Thinking it over, Jim decided not to build the dome building. He decided to hire some people in one of the small towns to help him build what he wanted. His decision was to build a normal house, but very defensible. After wards, he was going to finish it himself and add some things. Jim went over to Hastings, a town a little farther out. They had an unemployment office and he checked that out. A lot of people looking for work he saw. He stuck a sign up on his truck. Looking for temporary construction help. As they came out of the offices he had several inquiring as to what he wanted done.
“I am building a house. I need help with some of the work. It may take a few weeks or month, but I am willing to feed you, house you, and pay you during the building process. I want you to live out there and work, but you will be paid nicely.”
One other guy said he had a wife and could not leave her because she was pregnant.
“Can she cook?”
“Sure, she is a great cook.”
“Ok, we will bring her out also, she can cook, and I will pay her also for her work. In addition, I will pay for the doctor and hospital when she needs to deliver the baby.”
“You what? That does not make sense.”
“Well, I am a recent loner. I need people I can trust. I figure if I pay for all that, I will be able to trust you both. Besides, my cooking sucks. Just do not tell anyone else about this arrangement. If it works out and you both like the idea, we could think about permanent employment and a place to live out there. What do you say?”
“I am sure she will agree I just have to talk to her. Honestly, we have no place to go. We became homeless last week and it has been really rough.”
“Homeless, Ok, get your wife, I will wait on you both and take you with me.”
“Sir, I sure hope this is not joke! We need it!”
“Call me Jim. It is no joke. I need your help. In fact I really do need someone I can trust to stay out there.”
“I will be back in a couple of minutes. She is over in that park waiting for me.”
“I am in no hurry, go ahead.” “Tricia, I think I lucked into a solution to our problem!”
“What!”
After Randy explained she was nervous. “Do you think he plans to hurt us? Is he ok?”
“I think so baby. He was going to take me today, but I told him about you so he said it is ok. He seems nice, a little sad, but nice.”
“Let me meet him, ok?”
“This is my wife Tricia, Tricia this is Jim.”
“I am really glad to meet you Tricia. I did not come over here looking for someone to cook, but my cooking is really terrible. I really need you and your husband to help me. In return, I will help you both a lot.”
“He said you would pay the doctor and hospital bills?”
“For sure, and you will be the boss of the house. I will probably be gone a lot anyway.”
“Are you married?”
She noticed a cloud over his face.
Jim decided to answer. “Since we are going to be trusting each other I will tell you. After this though, I really do not want to talk about it. I was married and had a little boy. They were murdered by the police a few months ago. Now I am alone.”
Instantly she knew who he was talking about. The news had a field day with it. “I am so sorry to bring that up. I am really sorry.”
“It is ok. Now we know each other enough don’t we?”
“Yes sir, I mean Jim, we would be proud to work for you,” said Randy. “And you can trust us like we trust you and our family.”
“Done deal, let’s get something to eat. Get in. Do you have any personal items to pick up?”
“Yes, we put everything in a storage locker. We were worried that we would lose it all.”
“Don’t worry. I will take care of it.”
Wide eyed, Tricia got in the truck, wiping her eyes.
After some fast food and arriving at his property, Jim told them to get out and stretch. They could use the RV if they wanted to rest.
“I am going to go get another RV for you. When we build the house, I will build some rooms for you two. Is that ok?”
“Uh, sure,” said Randy. “You sure are going to spend a lot of money on us Jim.”
“Yes, but you need it, and I need you, so don’t worry.”
Jim let them to go to the RV and catch some rest. He bought another RV, one a little roomier than what he had. He stocked up on more food for them all and headed back home.
“This RV is yours for now. Once we get it leveled you can fix it up. Oh, do you have a vehicle?”
“No, that got repossessed.”
“I am sorry to hear that. If you are willing, how about we go into town and find a vehicle? You will need one to work for me. We can also empty check out your storage area.”
“Sure, uh, you are going to get us a vehicle?”
“Yes. It will be mine, but it will be for the use of you and Tricia. I think she might be using it more than you, ha-ha.”
“I am having trouble believing our good luck Jim.”
“I understand, but I really do need you and I really really need your wife’s cooking.”
A quick trip to the storage area showed that their belongings were fine. The locker had not been padlocked yet. Jim paid what was due for the rent and a couple of months ahead. Then they loaded up a few things that Jim wanted to take back. They quickly found a vehicle. It was a used suburban with plenty of room. They had the car already to go; it had just been cleaned and serviced for a buyer that backed out at the last moment.
“Randy, I have a few errands in town. How about we load your stuff in the suburban and you take it all back? Tell Tricia that we will be having 4 more people staying out there before long and I would like her to shop for food for all of us. You and her can go to the store, shop, and get used to the vehicle.”
“That would be fine Jim, but we don’t have any money.”
“Oh yeah, I will have to fix that and get you a debit card or something. Here, take this and do the shopping. If there is anything you two need, go ahead and buy it.”
“This is a thousand; I just want to keep receipts for everything we spend.”
“You sure,” asked Randy nervously?
“Randy, get over this, I need your help. Ok? Don’t worry about the money or what you think you might owe me. You will earn your keep, I promise you that.”
Smiling, Randy said, “ok, boss, I got it now.”
As he got out, Randy said “oh, will we need phones or anything?”
“Oh hell, yes you both will. I will take care of that! Thanks see you later.”
Once in the suburban, Randy broke down. Weeks of worry and stress and finally Jim coming into their lives and saving them was more than he could hold in.
Jim found an RV that he figured would work and purchased it. He suddenly realized he would need other housing for the other guys he was hiring. When he made a counter offer and told them what else he needed they came down in price quickly. They had a large one on the lot they could not sell. It would sleep 8. Although used they had priced it high. The manager saw a chance to unload it though without losing his shirt. Jim took it on the condition they deliver.
His next stop was Wal-Mart. He bought some trac phones and unlimited minutes for the month.
In the office of the bank he told them he required another account separate from his others and what he wanted to do with it. They were concerned but Jim assured them only two other people would be on that account. They would be purchasing for him.
On the way home he called an internet company. He wanted satellite internet. It was not too bad considering how far out he lived now. They would install it in a couple of days. Driving along he passed a company that got his attention. Drexel fencing, piping, and welding. He turned around and went in to talk to them.
“I have a general idea of what I want but am not sure. Could you have one of your guys come out, look around and tell me what might be best?”
“No problem. I can be out there in the morning about 9?”
“That would be great, thank you.”
Once back home he discovered his new employees crashed and completely asleep. Smiling he figured they could probably use the rest anyway aft what they had been through. Popping open a beer he decided to stretch out against a tree and relax. Within minutes he was asleep and the beer was draining into the grass.
Opening his eyes he found Randy and his wife upset that they had slept and not done the shopping.
“We are so sorry, we were exhausted.”
“Don’t worry about it. I knew you were exhausted and needed the rest. We can start tomorrow. It is not big deal.”
Smiling in relief, Tricia said “I am going to cook up some dinner for us.”
“That would be great!”
“You all see your RV there yet?”
“No, that is for us?”
“Sure, as long as you need it. I just need to hook it up with water and electricity will be by generator. I think it has most everything you need. If not let me know.”
Surprising him with a hug, Tricia went over to look it over. She came out smiling. “Perfect, thank you sir.”
“Just call me Jim ok?”
“We start work tomorrow, no need to jump on all this tonight. Tomorrow Tricia, you stock up on whatever food you think we might need. It might take a bit to get used to feeding us and four other people.”
“Yeah, Randy told me and that is no problem. What about utensils and things? Anything we need here you just go ahead and get. I will not crab at you about it.”
“We are starting from scratch and I need your help.”
“Got it, Jim.”
“Oh, one other thing. If anyone comes out to the property that you do not know works for us, tell them they do not have any permission to be here or look around. I really don’t trust the local cops.”
“I will make sure of that,” said Randy.
It turned out to be the best meal Jim had had in weeks. “If she keeps cooling like that Randy I am going to get fat. It was so delicious Tricia, thank you!”
Embarrassed a little she said, “you are welcome.”
“I think I am going outside with some coffee and relax before I go to bed. Good night you two.”
The next morning Jim and Randy leveled the new trailer and set it up with water. They also hooked a generator to it for electricity. With the results of the perk test in his hand he called a septic company and asked them for someone that could give him advice on what they needed. He wanted a large septic system with the trailers hooked up for now. It was going to be a week or two but when Jim offered a premium bonus for advice and work they promised the next morning.
The representative from the fencing company arrived. They drove around the property and Jim explained his intensions.
“That should not be a problem. We do a lot of security fencing for business and homeowners. Here is a brochure of what we have available, with pricing attached for you to go over. I suggest we start with a gate going across the road to your property. From there to the right to that gully over there. Then straight back. Uh, how much do you want to fence?”
“What you said was a good start. From the gully, go back 600 feet. Then left for 900 feet. Left again straight to the front and over to the gate.”
“Wow, that is going to cost and be quite a bit of work. How high do you want the fence?”
“I have thought about it. I want 8 feet all the way around, and the gate.”
“Pardon me sir. Uh, are you sure you can afford this? It is going to cost a bundle for something like that.”
Smiling, Jim said, “it is no problem. Just give me a quote.”
“Sure. Tell you what, I am going to take some measurements, run around the property and I can have you a quote in a couple of days. Is that ok?”
“Sure, do what you need to. Any advice would be appreciated also.”
Nodding, the guy wandered to his vehicle to get some tools. Jim went back to his other work.
Tricia had been working on a grocery list. It was long and going to be a pricey trip. She also had no idea of where to store the stuff. “Jim, I got this list. I know it is a lot of money but we will need it all.”
Trusting her he said, “go with it then, do you need Randy to help?”
“I think I do need help this time. We also do not have any place to store this stuff when we get it.”
“Oh, wow, I had not thought of that. Ok, do not get any of the frozen or refrigerated foods today. I will have to find us a way to store all this stuff. In fact, why don’t you two get yourselves situated in the RV for now; I am going to run out and see how fast I can get something out here. Jim headed back to where he bought the RV. He had noticed some tiny houses there that might work really good. They showed him around and he found a real nice one. It was already finished and wired and it did cost more. It was ready to use though. So he bought and arranged for it to be delivered. He just needed to figure out where he wanted it.
He did not want to go on the grid, but he had an idea it would be so much easier to get things going if he had full power. So he headed for the utility company for his area. It seemed there was power on the road, but it was a little ways from him. He discovered that it would cost close to 100,000 bucks to get it all done and power to the property. Well he thought, I sure can’t take it with me. They told him they could start in 3 days. That turned out to be a week. Bringing in utilities and starting from the basics like that is a real pain in the ass. Once done though it will make things easier though.
Things had gone well over the last two months. He got a bargain when he hired on Randy and Tricia. They worked hard and had become the family he had lost. Tricia had the shopping down pat. She could cook for them all including any hired help that was around. The extra hands from Randy made life much easier also. In this period of time Jim had power, septic tanks installed, internet, and most anything else he needed. One Monday morning randy came over yelling at Jim. He had no idea of what was going on and came outside in his shorts, armed. He found Randy going crazy Tricia in labor. Dressing quickly, they got Tricia into the truck and headed for the hospital. It all went smooth in Jim’s mind. Randy might have had a different opinion. Two days later he took them all home with a little girl they named Teresa. The baby made Jim a little sad thinking of his wife and son. It had been eight months since they had been killed. On the plus side, the pregnancy was over and things would get back to normal.
The coming weekend was supposed to be a major MAG meeting. They were going to celebrate completion of a bunch of things on the mag property. Jim had not been over there in months. Saturday morning Jim got up and headed over to the mag. He found out immediately that there was security now. A young man that took his job seriously did not know Jim. Fortunately, Rocco was a short distance away and cleared it up.
“I had no idea of the pass code Rocco,” said Jim.
“Laughing he said I forgot all about that. My mistake guys, I am sorry.”
Over the weekend Jim met a lot of people both new and old friends. He had more fun than he had in a long time. He was also amazed as to what Rocco had spent money on.
“Wow Rocco, this is amazing! I had no idea of exactly what you all wanted to build but this shelter is something else”.
“I am glad you approve Jim. I spent 200 grand of your money on the shelter alone. But it has everything we could think of. Let me show you around. We have the main area here, that is the management office over there. We also keep communications in it. Over here is our medical. We have an armory down that way. Then there is an area to separate and entertain children. It has been a lot of work.”
“Have you bought comm Equipment yet, or stocked the armory and medical areas?”
“Not yet, but that is next on the list. We also have the kitchen, it will feed around 80 at a time max, but we do not expect to reach that number. Behind the kitchen is a very large area for food storage and freezers. All the electronics here can run off grid power, or generators. We have solar, but that will not run everything. The armory has a few things in it, mostly what you bought.”
“Sounds like you are really planning it out well Rocco.”
“I hope so Jim, things keep getting weirder out there.”
Monday morning Jim went back home but decided to go into town for breakfast first.
As he sat down to order 3 police officers came in and sat down with him. “Is there a problem officers?”
“We are still looking for Simms and we think you might know something.”
“Really, well, I do not know anything about Simms other than he is an asshole. I think as soon as I leave here I will call the feds and tell them you are harassing me. You were warned about that.”
Angry, one officer said we will be watching you buddy. They got up and left. That little incident got Jim thinking. He knew better than to try checking the body. Even if he could they probably have someone watching him.
He decided he would call the feds, just like an innocent guy would.
Pulling a card the agent gave him out of his wallet, he called.
“Yes sir, this is Jim Preston. You told me to call if I was having issues with the police here.”
“Yes sir Mr. Preston. What is going on?”
“They have a missing officer here in town and they think I had something to do with it. I was just told a few minutes ago that they are watching me.”
“I see. Did you have anything to do with the missing officer?”
“No, I have not seen him.”
“Hmm, ok, let me call them and see what they have to say. I gave them instructions before I left. I guess they did not take me seriously.”
Hanging up, Jim figured he had to be really careful for a while. He had some serious thinking to do.
“What the hell?” “All I know is what the fed told me. He said he warned us to leave Preston and his friends alone. He also said that another complaint will bring him back here with warrants!”
“Damn! That bastard Preston!”
“I will tell everyone to get off his case. Fucking Simms was an asshole anyway so we will just write him off.”
“Good,” said Chantry , the legal affairs officer. “I told you to drop it. The feds have us over a barrel and the sooner we forget the existence of Preston the better.”

My friends, I decided to be up front about all this. I have a medical problem. Concentrating on what I am doing is very difficult. I am not sure if I will be able to finish this story. I hereby relinquish all rights to this story to anyone that wants to try their hand finishing it. Just grab it and go with it. Change the name or anything, but use it for the rest of us. I am sorry.
