I at times get tired of the shoot-em-up plots. So I have a suggestion for a story.
The world ends with a whimper. A disease from somewhere strikes making most of the world infertile, it could be either a male or female disease.
i visualize much of the world going to Florida,Cancun,Rio,Thailand to party away till they die. The few who can bear children end up in small enclaves farming salvaging and supplying the party people with alcohol and drugs. Most of the infrastructure will be left intact with the exception of the end times party areas. Now the story becomes interesting as the survivors farm and try to salvage technology and knowledge for future generations. Not only factories need salvaging but knowledge of the processes as well.
Perhaps different groups specialize in different areas of expertise.
Our hero/heroine can be a traveling trader moving between groups facilitating the trade of goods and knowledge or perhaps a medical specialist.
I am not an author so if someone would like to run with this scenario feel free to do what your muse tells you to do.

There's a comic book series (60 in number) that deals with a different view point called Y, The Last Man. A virus sweeps thru out the world basically instantly killing all males, whether human or animal....except for one guy who's in his 20's. Thing is, there seems to be 2 main groups of thought about him: kill him because it's Gods judgment against humanity, the other is to breed with him. Kind of strange that women would force a man to get a hard on.....would this be considered rape? But he's trying to get to Australia where his girlfriend/wants to marry her is at. The women that want to kill him call themselves Amazons and cut off one breast and are looking/hunting for him, so he dresses up as a woman. This takes place in the U.S.

I've written two EMP stories so far so maybe next I'll go with something like a virus or plague. I probably won't use your idea but it has merit if handled right.

It has also been done as a SciFi story where three men are in a space ship traveling around the sun gets bumped into the future. Women are clones, some with gland treatments to make them stronger, and a crew of them finds them in space.
