Just a reminder, the writers here work hard on their stories and appreciate comments. Writing is in general a labor of love and not necessarily something that comes easy. Please leave them comments or even constructive criticism. Its their form of pay for what they do for us.

I know how stupid this sounds... but I did spend some time searching the FAQs. How do you apply a simple "Thanks" to a chapter?
Other than common spelling and grammatical errors, which I prefer not to get picky about, I do not feel to be in the same league as most of these writers and refuse to second guess them. If I see an issue with a subject I am competent in I may issue a comment or question.

Comments I've gotten in my three stories so far have helped me correct grammatical and spelling errors, but also technical errors - regarding the BAR rifle in "Welderman," and the use of generators and automatic transfer switches in both "Lariat Advance" and "A Difference of Opinion."

I like your stories so much that I will be reading with a more critical eye now. Get out your nit swatter.

Well, guys, it appears as though, on the first page of Continuing Stories at least, I'm the last one to leave comments for six different threads. Hope I ain't the kiss of death that brings things to a screachin' halt. I don't have any writin' skills of which to speak so I've now and then picked nits when I see something that catches my eye in some of these stories in the way of grammar and spelling. I'm also known by those around me as tryin' to be a smart ass, so if I'm steppin' on anybody's toes with my comments, let me know and I'll slink off with my tail between my legs. Nah, no sense llyin' about that, but I will try not to be run my mouth (keyboard) to much.

I am not sure if I am in the correct place here but I would like to ask if anyone can point me into the direction of survival post apocalyptic stories with emphasis on the "new pioneers" of a devastated earth?

How devastated? There are the "massive die-off" stories where the infrastructure isn't destroyed, just shut down with some damage. A small number of people could band together in a rural community and make things work with old-fashioned power - horses, steam, whatever. It doesn't take an EMP event to shut off power, fuel supplies and food deliveries - loss of enough skilled people can also shut down the infrastructure. There are the "massive infrastructure damage" (nuclear attack, earthquakes, super volcano) stories where recovery of the industrial economy might take a century or more. The survivors could be from anywhere and might have limited practical skills - or it might be a prepper community that (more or less) takes things in stride. If you haven't read Jerry D Young's stories, he has a broad assortment of scenarios - from nuclear war to pole shift. His web site with downloadable PDFs is gone, but his stories are on amazon.com www.amazon.com/Jerry-D.-Young/e/B009NMRQ26/ref=dp_byline_cont_ebooks_1 There are a number of $1 books and many of the others are $2.99 but go on sale for free every few months. In the Completed Stories section you'll find my massive die-off story "Accidental Family". If you'd prefer the polished and neatly packaged version, it's available in Kindle format: www.amazon.com/dp/B01LVU5ILAThere are many other (possibly better ;-) stories in Completed Stories (some of them now published on amazon) and in Stories as They are Written. If you haven't checked out all those stories, you should read at least the first chapter of each one. You can do a google search for "paw fiction" or "apocalypse fiction" and find other sites with stories. Most of the prepper/survivalist sites have a fiction section. Be aware that not every good story gets finished - life interferes (illness, job change, etc), sometimes the author gets tired of writing (Maybe tired of that group of characters?), sometimes the author's inspiration dries up (been there) and sometimes the author and a forum moderator have a disagreement that leads to nothing more being posted on that site.

Hi Stormy. Maybe check out a book called ZERO by James Toogood. I bought it from amazon. It's definitely on the survivalist spectrum. Pretty brutal and doesn't hold any punches. Some good concepts and characters and definite themes and symbolism of death. Big page turner. Aah I want to say more but don't want to spoil anything. Hope you take a look and enjoy! Mick

New here... kinda hesitant to join up, not a lot of posting going on here. Welcome to the forum! Posting goes in fits and starts, as the forum's name might indicate - we're at the mercy of the muses who inspire the various authors ;-) However, you'll find reading for several days (weeks?) in the Completed Stories section. You'll find people-oriented stories where the preparations for the unexpected are just part of who the characters are and where they live. You'll also find stories of people thrust into sudden changes and their responses to those changes. I've read most of the stories and if I had to choose just one author for re-reading it would be the late Patience. Hopefully, your grass is cut or your snow is shoveled, depending on where you live, as your could lose several hours any day you visit.

Appreciate any responses.

my question is: are there areas on this site or others that you know that have completed works in like a pdf file that can be downloaded and read on a kindle? Appreciate any responses. Peace and stay safe and Happy New Year 2018 dw Some of Jerry D. Young's stories are available as PDF in the "Completed Stories" section. There are other sites that have his works. His web site closed a year or so ago so I don't know if there's a single site with all his stories available. If you watch the Kindle book sales, his stories are all available in that format and go on sale for $0.99 or free on an irregular basis (I've been watching those books and think I now have a complete set in Kindle format). The downside of posting formatted documents here is that you must be a member of the forum to download attachments and some people just want to read, not comment or even post questions. The plain text post-per-chapter format works for all devices. The simplest way to get a multi-post story into a single document is to use a PC (or Mac) and copy the text of each web page of a story, paste it into a basic text-only editor (such as Notepad) to remove the images and formatted links then copy the cleaned-up text, paste it to a word processor and save as whatever format you want (Microsoft Word, Open Office, Libre Office have lots of "Save as" options). You can also use a word processor to find and delete the "boilerplate" information around each post.

Hello there friends.
I have just recently started to post a story in the "as they are written section" and feel it is getting a little long for one page. I cannot find a way to section a post off into pages in the same thread. I have looked and lots of stories have pages in the same thread. Does it happen automatically at a certain length? Is there a button I need to click?
Thanks Forthteller

For vision reasons, I write in a large font (18pt) in Microsoft Word (corporate license for Office 2003 from a company that folded long ago and I got $0 for my stock but I did wind up in possession of the installation media for Office 2003 and some other useful things). I can get the word and character counts with a couple of keystrokes. The free word processors (Open Office, Libre Office, etc) have word count capability. I don't remember the limit on the number of characters in a posting on this forum so I just keep the posts to 1300 words or less, which seems to be OK everywhere I've posted. The rule of thumb is that a "word" is 5 characters long so 1300 words is 6500 characters.

A novel running 90,000 words will fit on 3 pages with at least some room to spare.

Is this a "searchable site? or location?" They caught me posting on another site and told me either I had to remove them or they'd drop me from being able to sell on their site which I can't afford to lose. Many thanks Ira Tabankin

If Amazon promotes your books, they want exclusive rights. If they don't - you're either doing pay-per-click advertising on Amazon or you're relying on word of mouth - then they don't care (I'm currently selling 1 or 2 books a week by word of mouth [11 in November, 5 in December, 3 so far this month] but I started publishing here to share what I had written, until several readers told me the first story should be available as an ebook).
If the title on Amazon and the title on a forum are sufficiently different, Amazon's search engine won't consider them the same story. "The End of Joe - Part 1" and "The End of Joe - Book 1: How He Dies" will not be seen as the same story. If the titles are identical, Amazon's search engine does a text compare of some number of words to see if they're the same. If the ebook has several hundred words of prologue and the forum version does not, it probably won't be seen as the same story. I haven't tested the prologue theory but my published ebooks are all still available here, after assuring the submission engine several times that the work is mine and not in the public domain.

Bein' as I'm still kind of a new kid here myself,I hope I ain't out of line in expending a welcome to a bunch of new members. Nice to see some of you who've been on another board for a long time. Poke around a bit and enjoy some fine writin' by folks of whom you may not be aware, in addition to the works of those you may've followed here.
