This is a poem, but it came to me as a song ...... a buoyant waltz. What do you think?
Oh, Rose, can we dance in the silver moonlight?
I went to a dance and just what did I see,
But a pretty young girl that was smiling at me.
She had long pretty hair, she had pretty brown eyes,
That melted my heart, made me quiver and sigh.
I asked her to dance and she smiled up at me,
One look in her eyes told me she was for me.
Oh, Rose, can we dance in the silver moonlight?
Can we walk hand in hand in the summer sunlight?
Can I see you tomorrow? Can I see you tonight?
Can I love you from morning till night.
We walked in the fields, and we walked on the sand.
And I held her real close, oh, the feeling was grand.
We lay on the grass and I loved her some more.
Her sweet, tender lips told me what was in store.
She told me she loved me, I answered the same.
We loved in the meadow, without any shame.
Oh, Rose, can we dance in the silver moonlight?
Can we walk hand in hand in the summer sunlight?
Can I see you tomorrow? Can I see you tonight?
Can I love you from morning till night.
One day as we walked, I thought this is the life,
I asked her to marry, to be my sweet wife.
She looked up at me with a tear in her eye,
Said, we cannot marry, my darling, here’s why.
My spirit is free, it can’t stand any chains,
I’ll love you today while my love still remains.
Oh, Rose, can we dance in the silver moonlight?
Can we walk hand in hand in the summer sunlight?
Can I see you tomorrow? Can I see you tonight?
Can I love you from morning till night.
One day without warning, my Rose disappeared.
I knew it would happen, ‘twas just as I feared.
No more will I hold her, look into her eyes.
Her smile is a memory, the thought makes me cry.
But I will remember that look in her eye,
That way that she smiled, yes, it still makes me sigh.
Oh, Rose, can we dance in the silver moonlight?
Can we walk hand in hand in the summer sunlight?
Can I see you tomorrow? Can I see you tonight?
Can I love you from morning till night.
The years they have past, I am not a young man.
Though memories are faded, I still feel the pain,
Of a girl with a smile that was lively and gay,
With the look in her eye that had so much to say.
Oh, Rose, can we dance in the silver moonlight?
Can we walk hand in hand in the summer sunlight?
Can I see you tomorrow? Can I see you tonight?
Can I love you from morning till night.
