The best early warning system for home, etc, is a dog or dogs.

I don't know if I hate to admit it or not, but as I get older, sometimes I wonder if the simpler ways wouldn't be better. If the grid would go down, it would surely improve the gene pool. On the one hand, I am hoping we never have to find out... But on the other?

Had to smile when I saw the term POTS. Spent more than 30 years maintaining the POTS. Great story. Looking forward to more.

If anyone is curious about the EMPshields from the story (I was) here is a link www.empshield.com/product/vehicle/Thank you ncfsgm for the chapters posted for another of your excellent stories. Sniper69, After looking at their website, I am disappointed that they don't give more detail on the products. The home unit looks a lot like a typical whole house surge suppressor. Back when I did the broadcast engineering work for radio stations, I installed a number of the industrial surge suppressors and worked with others that had already been installed. Most were the MaxiVolt brand. They certainly provided good protection against lightning induced damage via the AC power feeds. I don't feel confident the automotive unit would be sufficient since it only has protection for the DC incoming power. There are too many sensors and wires where sufficient voltage might be induced, damaging the inputs to the engine computer. I wonder if using ferrite chokes on the wire bundles connecting the the computer module might help.

I don't have enough info on the empshields either. Maybe they have some "secret sauce" inside them.
