Cassie was born in the NYC ghettos of Puerto Rican parents. She grew up there, it was a bad area. Most nights there were gunshots every night, wearing certain colors could get you killed if you were in the wrong area and drugs were openly sold on the street corners. Her parents died when she was 16, she dropped out of school and moved in with her boyfriend who was 20. By 25 she had 3 girls. Nowadays her boyfriend rarely came home and there was never much money. He cheated on her many times and with many women. He dealt drugs, used drugs. He came home to basically sleep, beat her and have sex. Often the rent was past due and the money for food was slim. She made sure her daughters ate before her and made sure they had clean clothes, she often did without. Cockroaches often were found scurrying across the floor and at night, rats often woke them as the rat ran across their bodies.
With her boyfriend often hitting her, she had a broken nose that healed crooked because it was set by a neighborhood person. She also had several cracked ribs over the years and 1 fractured arm. She often had a black eye from him punching her. She made sure the boyfriend never touched the girls. She suffered through it because that was the only life she had known. One day she was told that the boyfriend had been killed in a drug deal that went wrong. She had had enough.
There was an old clunker of a car that her boyfriend had. She knew there was a small stash of money the boyfriend had inside the wall, it turned out to be $200. She loaded the children and some clothes into the car and left NYC.
Days later she somehow found herself way off the beaten track and out in the country. They had made short stops at gas stations for fuel, restroom and some food. She was dazed by the lack of sleep and constant looking over her shoulder for anyone chasing her. The money was gone, the last spent at the last gas station on $20 of gas and 2 sandwiches for her daughters to share. Driving down the country road, her car motor started sputtering as she coasted to a stop at the side of the road. She was out of gas and no more money and in the middle of nowhere. Leaning her head on the steering wheel, she was bawling along with her girls in the back seat.
She finally realized that someone was talking to her. Looking up through her teary eyes, she made out a man and realized there were 2 small boys at his side. Scared, she jumped and made sure the doors were locked and her daughters were safe in the back seat. She turned back to hear the man inaudibly saying something she couldn't make out through the closed window. The man motioned for her to wind down the window.
Cautiously she slowly wound the window down maybe ¼ of an inch. She asked what he wanted and not to come too close. The man stepped back 3 feet with the boys in tow. The man said he wasn't going to harm her, he asked if she needed help, did her car break down. She said she was fine and then a girl's voice from the backseat saying she was hungry and then 2 more voices saying the same. The man said that she and the children could walk with him and his sons to his place. There was hot food and they could use the bathroom and shower.
Cassie sat there looking at the man and boys for at least 10 minutes without saying a word, trying to judge the man and his intention. Finally after weighing her options, she said she would go along. The man and boys stepped farther back as Cassie and her daughters got out of the car.

Ralph saw a woman of what looked to be Puerto Rican about mid 20s, maybe 5 feet 6 inches tall and slim. She didn't look like she had been eating much for a long time. Her nose was slightly crooked as if it had been broke in the past. She had brown eyes and dark hair that came down over her shoulders. She was wearing a well worn skirt to her lower legs and a blouse. The 3 girls with her weren't looking much better. They looked like they were running away from something or someone.
Cassie insisted she carry their bag of clothes when the man wanted to carry them. The soon came to a house, a long sprawling Ranch style house that he led them into. Inside he showed them a bedroom and bathroom that he said they could use and that both rooms had inside locks for their privacy. He said he would get some supper ready while they got cleaned up and asked if they had any food allergies – none.
While they were getting a shower, Ralph and his sons headed to the kitchen to make a quick supper. He figured they were in need of a hot nourishing meal. He planned on a soup and cornbread which would be quick to make. They grabbed 2 jars of canned meat along with jars of potatoes, corn and carrots. He poured them into a large stainless steel pot and added onions and other spices to it to heat through. While it was heating he got the electric grain grinder and ground grains to make cornbread. Mixing it up, it was soon in the oven baking.
Cassie and her daughters took a shower behind locked doors and changed clothes. When done, they followed their noses to the delicious smell coming from the kitchen. She entered the kitchen and was taken aback by what she saw. A very large room with a wood stove, 2 propane stoves, a big sink, counter and a large table. On the wall were hanging numerous cast iron skillets and stainless steel pots. Stacked on a counter were a bunch of cast iron dutch ovens. A bunch of mixers, blenders and shredders were spaced on another counter. The man had them sit down and he would serve up the food. She saw and smelled a soup with chunks of meat in it, cornbread still steaming from the oven, a bowl of butter. He was asking if they wanted water, milk or ice tea to drink. The man and his boys sat down across the table from them and the man prayed over the food.
During the meal, Ralph introduced himself and his sons. Cassie introduced herself and her daughters and thanked him for helping. He asked what was wrong with the car and she told him that it was probably out of gas. After supper, he put 5 gallons of gas in the tank and after a few cranks of the motor, it started running. He told her to drive it back to the house, where he filled the gas tank from the farm tank. Since it was almost dark, he offered for her to stay the night. He reminded her that her bedroom door had a sturdy inside lock and it looked like they could use a good night's sleep. She finally accepted.
Next morning Ralph and his sons were up at daybreak doing the farm chores. Back in the house, he and his sons were washed up and had the milk put away chilling before Cassie got up at 9AM. She embarrassingly said she was sorry for sleeping in late, that she was normally up hours earlier and they would get ready to leave. Ralph told her to stay and have breakfast, would she rather have eggs and bacon or oatmeal. Her daughters squealed out Bacon! Eggs! Laughing, Ralph looked at Cassie and said “bacon and eggs it is.” Again Cassie noticed the man prayed over their food before them eating. Cassie insisted she wash the dishes afterwards.
He noticed how ragged their clothes were and insisted they go to Walmart for some things. He told Cassie to get some clothes and shoes and whatever else they needed. Looking him in the eyes, she asked what he expected in return for his “generosity.” She saw his face turn beet red as he stammered – nothing. That he saw their need and was doing it in the name of Jesus Christ. Cassie bought several changes of clothes for her daughters and new shoes. Ralph told her she needed to buy for herself too. She picked out 2 skirts and blouses and a pair of shoes. She noticed that when she got to the women's underwear dept, he quickly turned and walked away.

Back at his house, he had them wash their clothes. While they were doing that, he checked her car over. It had a full gas tank, topped off the oil and fluids and checked the tires. She had seen him doing it and he told her that the car was in as good of a condition as could be expected. Ralph could see she still looked tired, along with her daughters playing with his sons in the yard. Cassie saw him lost in thought for several minutes. Then he said he had a strictly business proposal for her. Her car was ready to go and he would give her $300 in cash and she could leave. Or, she could stay and help out with chores until they were rested and wanted to leave. In exchange she would get room and board plus $200 cash each week. She thought about it for a few minutes. The man seemed to be honest. The time she had been here, he hadn't so much as looked at her in a leering way. Maybe she could trust him and stay a week or 2 til they were rested up. She agreed.
2 days later she was helping him at the farm stand. She marveled at all the fine, fresh food and how many people traveled out here to buy it. She watched Ralph interact with the people and how a lot of people seemed to like him. She noticed some poorer people and some older people, how when they bought, he always slipped something extra into their bags. Then the next day was Sunday and she and her daughters went along to church with him and his sons. They all sat in the back pew but still suddenly she found about 10 extra children sitting around Ralph with them in the pew. She saw how the children just loved being around him and he was well known and respected in this church. That helped her thoughts that she could trust him some. That was several months ago.
She was looking out the window at the snow coming down and swirling around in the wind. The outside thermometer was showing 20F. Just the thought of that made her shiver even though she was inside where it was nice and warm. This life had taken some getting used to. There were no gunshots every night, no rats or cockroaches. It took some time for her to get used to the big kitchen and cooking on the stoves, there was no microwave here. She had the meals ready every day, Ralph treated her with respect and never a threat of violence towards her. She washed clothes but he insisted he wash his own underwear. She loved the washer and dryer setup. The washer was one of the large commercial sized washers, the same with the dryer. Most times she hung the clothes outside on a line to dry. She loved the smell and feel of line dried clothes. Her daughters loved the place and even were home schooling along side of his sons.
She had found out from the oldest son that their mom had left several years ago. That she had come home with some other man, gave their dad some papers, said she didn't want her children, left with the man in a fancy car and they never saw her again. Cassie gasped in horror at the idea of a mother that didn't want her own children. And Ralph, he had a huge heart for children. She saw how he interacted with his sons, her daughters and the many other children. He was a good man. He had found out when the girl's birthdays were and each time had a party for them with presents. Somehow he had found out when Cassie's birthday was and had a party for her. She stood there with tears running down her cheeks, the last time she had a birthday party was before her parents died when she turned age 16. Then when she opened her present and found a beautiful long skirt and a blouse, she bawled and sobbed for 10 minutes before she could finally manage to say thanks.
Ralph came inside from the cold and she brought him a cup of hot mint tea that he liked. He told her the snow was still coming down and the forecast had been upped to 3 feet and the cold would continue. He had wood near the outside furnace ready to use and the furnace was full. The pickup truck had the tire chains on and the snow plow was mounted. The livestock was bedded down with extra straw and feed. Just then 1 of the children opened the door and yelled for them to come out and see the snowman they had built. Putting on their coats, hats and gloves they went out. The snowman was a big one and then suddenly they noticed it being quiet. Ralph and Cassie looked up just in time to see a wall of snowballs coming at them. Too late to duck, the snowballs plastered them. The battle was on. You would think that 5 children would be no match for 2 adults – wrong. Soon the adults called a truce and everyone headed inside to warm up, dry off and get some hot chocolate.

The Winter was another rough one, many snowstorms that kept people in their homes. When Ralph could make it into town, he took along produce for the preacher and for the preacher to pass out to the needy. He would shovel snow from old or sick people's walkways and again, filled heating oil tanks when needed. Cassie had asked him what he was looking at 1 night after the children were all in bed. He showed her and said he was looking at things to do as things in the world got bad. He showed her some of the different prepper sites and she didn't laugh at him. She told him she had grown to trust his judgment and if he thought it was prudent for him to do things, then she thought it would be wise for he to do it.
He showed her some of the PAW stories on 1 site and the great writers on there, how he liked reading them. 1 writer calling himself iamnobody, at a point in his earlier life he would of said that there was no way that women could of done those kind of bad things. But he had an ex wife that left him for some rich guy and even left her children. Now he could believe the different scenarios that iamnobody wrote about. Cassie told him she had heard about his ex leaving. Then she slowly went on to tell him about her past life – her parents dying, her living with a man, him cheating on her, having 3 daughters, him beating her, breaking her nose, cracking some ribs, fracturing her arm, their living conditions, him selling and using drugs, him dying and her fleeing til Ralph had found her along the toad. They both sat there staring out the window until Ralph coughed and said he was going to his bed. She went to hers also, morning would bring chores aplenty.
Throughout the rest of the Winter, Cassie looked at sites with Ralph. She made suggestions when he looked at supply sites, which he recognized as wise suggestions. Spring arrived and it was time for planting. Cassie was right there helping him. They expanded the garden, more chickens for eggs and meat. She was the one that suggested using Joel Salatin's chicken tractors and pig tractors. Also for adding meat goats and ducks to the livestock. They planted more fruit trees and berry plants and he added the high tunnels. The meat goats would be similar to the taste of venison and the demand for duck eggs was high. Ralph was doing 3x the business he had done at the farm stand before. Cassie saw her daughters run to Ralph when they needed their dollies fixed or fell and scraped their knees. Several times his sons had called her mom and then corrected themselves.

Summer turned into Fall and they had preserved a lot of food, sold a lot of food and given a lot to the needy. And Ralph had made sure the preacher and his family had got a share of the food. The farm trust's account book showed the farm very much in the green.
As evening approached, he was standing on the porch staring out over the fields. Cassie came out and stood next to him, breathing in the fresh air – and his manly scent so close to her. The whole time she had been here, he had never looked at her like a man would look at a woman. She had seen a picture of his ex wife and seen she was very beautiful. She didn't think of herself as being even pretty, let alone beautiful like his ex. She didn't think he would ever look at another woman because of what his ex did to him, let alone a plain and abused woman of her background. She knew she had been with her ex just because he was a “bad boy” who gave her the “tingles” and the butterflies in her stomach feeling. Her ex had done several short stints in jail for 30 days. And she had heard women at church say how Ralph had dated women and how he was “just too picky” when it came to women. She had never been treated this nice by a man, he treated her daughters like they were his own, and she saw how he loved the other children that flocked around him at church. She doubted he would ever look upon her as a woman he would ever be interested in. Thoughts were also going through Ralph's mind. He thought of the woman next to him, how wonderful she was.
Gathering himself, he turned to face her and said her name. She faced him. He told her that he knew she could leave at any time but he hoped she and her daughters would stay. That she was very beautiful, smart and hard working. That she had helped him immensely in the farm work and home. That he wanted her to stay as his wife. She was speechless for a few seconds before she could get out a “YES” and then his arms wrapped her in tight. They got a couple seconds of hugging and kissing before 5 sets of little arms wrapped around them and they heard “I have a daddy” and “I have a mommy.” They had STD tests done and were married a few days later at church under a marriage covenant where God was over their marriage. A simple wedding that united them as husband and wife. Cassie didn't want a honeymoon either, just to be at home with him. The whole church family was in attendance. That night Cassie was able to finally join Ralph in his bed.

Cassie loved being married to Ralph. He didn't smack her around, he treated her daughters well, he showed her affection every day and night, he wasn't out at the bars drinking and cheating on her. She loved how he would brush her hair or give her a back massage after she had a hard day of work. He was also loving being married to her. Unlike his ex, she didn't stop doing things for him and with him after they were married. She often sought him out to give him a hug, a kiss or to bring him a cup of his favorite mint tea. Or she would give him back massages after he had grueling days of throwing hay bales.
Ralph brought Cassie on board with what he had been doing and what he wanted to do but still didn't show her the “root cellar” storage nor the extent of how much money he controlled. They expanded the farm even more, they both practiced with the guns and even had instructors from several high profile names in the defense shooting industry come to their farm and give them private instruction and training. Ralph considered it just in time because things started getting bad. Cities were becoming madhouses, with thugs being allowed to loot and burn with no judicial consequences. Whole blocks of businesses and homes were looted and burned while police were ordered not to stop them. But woe to the private person that dare resist the thugs. They were quickly arrested and judges gave them harsh prison sentences for racism against the poor, peaceful, mistreated minority.
Businesses are required to hire 50% colored people and so called transgender, no matter what their qualifications are. And they can not be fired no matter what they do. Because of this, companies are failing. Prices are going up on everything. Ralph and Cassie saw a sharp increase in their sales. They were holding prices down and still helping the needy. This did not go unnoticed by the powers that were causing the chaos. “Inspection officials” made visits to their farm stand and told them they were in violation of not hiring minorities – Ralph said no one here got paid. The powers that be dropped off 5 colored people who started demanding free food be given to them, that they were entitled to it. There was a crowd of people at the farm stand that day. It was a mixture of people and they were murmuring against the 5 entitled persons. Suddenly 15 people stepped out of the crowd, some Blacks, some Mexicans and even 1 Chinese person. The 5 entitled people cheered and said “welcome bros to the movement.” The 15 people grabbed a hold of them, gave them a good thrashing, said trash like them weren't welcome here and threw them into the minivan they had arrived in. Whose driver then sped off. Ralph thanked the 15 people and tried giving them free food but they declined, saying him and Cassie were part their community and were to be protected.
After that, Ralph and Cassie took to having an AR15 with 5 mags hid under the farm stand tables and each carrying a concealed handgun. Ralph liked the Ruger GP100 and always had 24 extra rounds in speed loaders. Cassie took a liking to the Springfield 1911A1 and carried 4 extra magazines. The had the children always stay well behind the farm stand now. The rest of the season was uneventful and things settled down – somewhat. At least the cities were no longer burning.

During that Winter, Ralph did a lot of thinking. Prices of goods were still going up, and he was making less off the stocks that his grand parents and parents had bought. He talked it over with Cassie to get her opinion and he did a lot of praying about what to do. In the end he had the farm trust accountant start selling off the stocks. With Cassie's help, he started buying common everyday items to stockpile. Things were already 10% higher in price than a year ago and the stocks were only earning 5%. Though the official government statistics said inflation was only 3%. Ralph couldn't figure out how they came up with that low figure when the common person could see a higher rate. The government must have been using the “new math” where whatever you thought was the answer, was the correct answer.
Come Spring he expanded the crops and livestock again. They were using open pollinated crops whenever possible. They weren't quite as good looking as the hybrid ones but the customers raved about how much better tasting they were and they could save seed to grow again next year. Ralph had read about the hybrid ones having been bred so they looked great and could stand up to shipping long distances but the flavor had been lost in the breeding. He stuck with the basics in crops and didn't try to grow exotics. He added more meat chickens and hogs. They had great flavor due to being raised in the movable pens on the pasture and having sprouted grains added to their diet. The customers liked the chicken and duck eggs, how fresh they were and not those pale yellow yolks of eggs from the stores.
The hogs were let grow to 350 pounds instead of the no taste 200 pounders the commercial hog farms did. These critters produced plate sized pork chops. Ralph and Cassie produced a lot of lard and sold a lot of the fat to people who wanted to make their own. The beef he raised was 3 year old beef, none of that 18 month old “baby beef” with no flavor that were mass raised in feed lots. Ralph ended up buying meat grinders and equipment to process his own meat. Even to building a small butchering shop complete with a walk in cooler. Also a smokehouse and a curing shed for bacon and hams. He put in 2 ponds of 1 acre size each, in 1 he was raising catfish and the other was for carp. CARP! YUCK! was the common response until he showed them how to pressure cook the Carp and then make them into fried fish patties made with fish, crackers, egg and onions. Then he had lots of customers wanting the cheap Carp. And everyone already knows how good fried catfish is.
He got honey bees by building several Long Langstroth hives and setting them up to catch local wild honey bee swarms. He wanted local wild bees so that they were acclimated to the area. A Long Langstroth hive was different from the commercial square hives that was square and stacked up like a skyscraper and made with thin boards that made it hot in the summer and bitter cold in the Winter. A Langstroth hive was made of insulated walls and was long and deep. The bees were able to keep the hives at normal temperatures without expending lots of energy. He wanted local bees that were used to the climate in his area. Mail order bees were raised in the deep South and often died out in the colder areas. His bees were thriving, then the “official” inspectors came and demanded that they had to inspect his hives due to State law. Ralph had heard of too many cases of where a person's hives were doing great, then the officials came in and inspected the hives and shortly after that the bees started dying off. He refused to allow them on his property, one tried forcing his way in and was run off at gunpoint. Ralph was happy to see that Cassie had her rifle ready and was backing him.
Cassie found Lehman's online site and she had lots of items she thought would be useful to them. Ralph agreed and they placed a large order. Cassie wanted to visit the store in person but he pointed out it would be several hours long trip each way and he didn't feel it would be a wise thing to do. She agreed. Ralph wanted more common every day items for resale and giveaways for later. He bought a deep well water pump for their well, plus repair parts for it.
Walking through Walmart sporting goods section, he saw the Sawyer mini water filters. If there was an electric shortage and water couldn't be pumped by most people or the water supply was polluted, a person could have clean water by using the Sawyer that was supposedly good for 100,000 gallons of water. When he got home, he ordered 500 of them for storage. He ordered a bunch of the cheap kerosene lanterns and replacement wicks for resale. Along with 1,000s of candles and piles of matches. He made sure Cassie and his daughters had plenty of clothing and footwear for all seasons and for many years. Then he stockpiled clothing for resale in many sizes and the different seasons.
Cassie reminded him of women's needs, so lots of feminine products were stored. Also she wanted sewing machines, replacement parts, bolts of cloth, thread and etc. He ordered 5,000 cases of quart canning jars along with 50,000 packs of canning lids. They started even canning most of their meat instead of relying on freezers. And it made the tougher cuts of meat so tender. He got several of the high quality grain grinders for making flour and Cassie just loved making fresh baked breads. And her family loved the taste of it too. Cassie asked for a way to cook and bake outside, to keep the heat out of the house during the warm months of the year. So Ralph did research on youtube and came up with ideas. He ended up making Cassie several cook stoves and a couple of stone ovens. She tried them out and loved them.

2 more years and the economy nosedived. Prices were skyrocketing, workers were being laid off. But the governments, State, local and Federal all raised taxes in all areas because of the lack of tax funds. The people were expected to pay higher taxes when they had little or no work. Ralph held his food prices down and customers flocked to their farm stand. Money was tight for a lot of people. Some people were offering trades of work for food. He always found some farm work for those people. Some people offered “toys” like boats, RVs and etc. He turned those down. The bad times stretched through the Winter and into the next year, just worse. People had lost a lot of weight due to not being able to afford as much food.
One day at the end of the day as people were leaving the farm stand, they saw a little boy and girl standing with tears running down their cheeks. The boy was slightly older and had his arm around the girl. They were slim and their clothes were ragged. Fear was written all over their face. Ralph knelt down in front of them and introduced himself, his wife and children that had gathered round. He asked them what was wrong and why were they here all alone. They told him through sobs that their parents had brought them here and told them to wait, the next thing they knew was they could no longer see their parents anywhere.
Ralph told the children not to worry, they were safe and would be helped. On the way to the house, he asked them when they last ate – 3 days ago. He told them they would eat as soon as they got inside. As they washed their hands, he could hear 2 little stomachs growling with hunger. Cassie had a stew simmering all day and it was ready to dish out. 2 sets of little eyes got big when 2 bowls of stew and a chunk of cornbread were placed in front of them. Ralph said the blessing and everyone ate. After supper, Cassie got them into the shower and had clean clothes waiting on them. Ralph had called the Sheriff and explained what had happened. He was told that had already been happening in town and there was no more room for more children there. He hung up the phone and told Cassie what the Sheriff said. Looking at each other, in unison they said “they stay here.”

Over the Summer things got worse. Food wasn't really scarce, just so high priced it was not affordable by people with no jobs. Unemployment checks were small because so many people were laid off. By Fall, Ralph and Cassie had “found” several more children left behind. Then they were targeted by the authorities for doing good.
They had a visit from the food safety office, citing they were selling non government inspected foods and an unlicensed food making facility. Ralph and Cassie had set up a food stand selling soup at their farm stand. It turns out the complaint was signed by the head official of the local “government assistance” office. Ralph told them to leave, they said they would be back with police to shut him down. The next day the public school superintendent showed up and claimed he was in violation of school policy by home schooling without permission. By now a crowd of his customers had gathered around listening. Ralph said he didn't need school permission to teach his children. The school official said it was State and local school law that he did. Ralph smiled and said the guy had it all wrong, no parent needed school “permission” to teach the children, it was the school that needed the parents permission to teach. The school guy puffed his chest up and said the children belonged to the State and the parents had no say in the children. The crowd started murmuring.
About that time the food safety official showed up with 5 State Police in tow, the Sheriff was also along. The food official told the Police to arrest Ralph for resisting his orders and the school official said he was also withholding the children from the school and would be arrested for that. Ralph looked at the Sheriff and asked where he stood on all this. That the Sheriff knew Ralph was in the right. The Sheriff came and stood with Ralph, he told the Police to stand down and leave, this was his jurisdiction and there was no crimes being committed and this was just targeting a person for not obeying illegal things from officials. Ralph saw 2 Police move away from the food official and say they weren't henchmen to do evil bidding. The 3 remaining Police along with the 2 officials looked at the Sheriff with a smile and said it was still 5 against 2.
Ralph had Cassie move back with the children as he stood along with the Sheriff facing the others. Then faster than a blink of an eye, the Police stepped towards Ralph and the Sheriff, and 20 men broke from the crowd of customers and pounced on the Police and officials. No weapons were able to be pulled and the fight was on and over in less than 5 minutes. The Police and officials were very bloodied and bruised, being held by 2 men for each of them. The Sheriff stepped forward and took the weapons off the 3 Police, also relieving them of handcuffs, extra hidden keys, radios and etc. He took the Police and officials to the jailhouse and put them in a cell.
The big city TV news crew from NYC also left. That evening they put their liberal slant to it and broadcast it all over the city, showing the stupid country hicks trying to defy the officials. In a NYC prison a man stopped and stared at the newscast as other prisoners cheered at the “pigs” getting their just rewards. Someone called out “hey Ricardo, are you playing or not.” Ricardo smiled as he walked away from the TV and thought about his release in 12 months.

Ricardo must be Cassie's ex boyfriend. Oh will he be in for a shock when he ends up in SSS mode from her husband Ralph.
