Chapter 24 - The Test
Cole and Jake decided to lounge around the pool Saturday and leave Sunday for the drive up. They would get rooms at a nearby hotel and be at the site at reporting time. Jake wanted to get some things at General Jackson's Military Surplus Store on Yadkin Road before they stretched out by the pool that afternoon so they knocked that out. They got back to the hotel, carrying two big sub sandwiches and a 12-pack of beer. Talking a maid out of two of the plastic waste baskets found in the rooms, they gave her a tip and filled one with beer and ice and the other one half-full of ice then added water. They laid in the lounge chairs, munching the sandwiches and drinking beer. A small radio on the deck between them played music. They each opened a beer and set the beers down in the waste basket with ice and water to keep it cold. Talking in low voices of what they might be going through, they munched on the subs and sipped beer. When the can was empty enough to almost flip out of the water, they'd finish it and open another one. They lazed the afternoon away and got tired of drinking so they decided to get cleaned up and see a movie. There was a movie that had just come out they were both interested in seeing, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." They showered and met in the lobby then caught a taxi to the theater. They both enjoyed the movie and had a drink and a sandwich at the bar then went to bed.
They arrived in Chase City, Virginia, the closest place to their destination with a motel, a little after three. It wasn't a Holiday Inn but it was a roof over their heads and the sheets smelled clean. The clerk gave them a verbal tour of the town, which didn't take very long and informed them that the restaurant closed at 8:00 pm on Sundays and not to tarry; and no beer was sold on Sundays. Jake grinned at Cole. They got their room keys and parked their trucks in front of their rooms and took in their overnight bags and their coolers.
Cole had just set his bag in the luggage stand and the cooler on the floor when Jake knocked and walked in.
"I hope the rest of that 12-pack from yesterday is in that cooler." Jake said.
"Grab me one." Cole replied.
"Cole, who the hell says 'tarry'? Sounds like something out of the 'Children of the Corn'."
"Well, look around you. We are pretty much in the country. I'll bet there's a switch to turn the stop signal off at night."
Jake almost snorted beer through his nose.
"I wonder what they'll be having us do way out here in the boondocks?" Cole wondered.
"I hope it's something different than just running around in the woods. We can do that already." Jake said.
"They had dinner in the little mom and pop restaurant that was quite good and returned to the hotel to finish their beers. It would probably be a while before they tasted any again.
Cole turn onto the long drive through the trees that was the terminus of their small journey and perhaps the prelude to great experiences. When he reach the group of buildings surrounding a large farmhouse he wasn't sure they were at the right place. It looked to him like just an ordinary farm. There was a graveled parking area in front of a large, weather outbuilding so Cole parked there. Jake pulled in right in beside him. Cole got out and stood waiting for Jake to join him when he heard a screen door slam. An old man in bibbed overalls walked out, preceded by a boxer who showed she was friendly.
"You boys here for that selection thing?" The old man asked.
"Yes, Sir." Cole and Jake echoed.
"Well, jest take your stuff in that building and pick your rooms. Change into your fatigues boots, and patrol caps. Don't bother putting on rank, or if you have your rank sewn on, remove it. Rank don't hold any weight out here. Supper's at six up at the house. Might be more showing up 'fore then."
Cole and Jake grabbed their bags and went into the building. They checked all twelve rooms and they were identical. The furnishings might as well have been repurposed from a Detention Facility supplier. Anyway, it was dry and out of the elements.
Over the next two hours four more people showed up and selected their rooms, one was a female.. Cole and Jake sat outside and talked with each other until they were called to dinner mainly because the other four who had arrived stayed mainly to themselves. If they knew anyone else there, you wouldn't know it. Jake watched them and they way they acted for a while then leaned over and said in a muffled voice to Cole, "My name is Bond, James Bond." Cole chuckle then the dinner bell rang and they headed for the house.
The meal was breaded pork chops, escalloped potatoes, mustard greens, cornbread and iced tea. There was strawberry-rhubarb pie for dessert. After dinner, they were herded to another rustic looking building were surprised when they went inside. It was set up as a modern classroom with audio-visual screen and comfortable chairs behind tables. They were told to take seats and through the side door came the old man, now dressed in khakis, who had greeted Cole and Jake.
"Good evening. My name is Major General Tom Fielding, retired. Welcome to the Ranch."
"You are here to undergo evaluation for a possible inclusion in further training. You will be given events to complete and no time standards and whether you successfully completed the event successfully or not will be told to you. If you decide this type of activity is not for you, speak up. You will return or continue on your way to your unit and nothing will be entered in your records. After your briefing this evening, you will be issued field gear, an M16 and a sidearm with ammunition. These weapons will be secured at all times. If you are found in violation, you will be released from the selection phase. The three men in the back of the room will now escort you to the supply building to issue your equipment."
One of the men told the group to follow him and everyone filed out of the building, Jake and Cole pulling up the rear. In the "Supply Building" which looked like a converted tack room, they were issued a rucksack, web gear already set up with two canteens, survival items, two MREs, water purification tablets, a flashlight with two batteries, a lightweight poncho, a compass, and a map protractor. After they had drawn their equipment, they were told to return to their quarters. Cole and Jake went to their rooms and immediately took their web gear apart and set it up like they liked it. They loaded their magazines and function checked their weapons. Cole's rifle was missing its firing pin. The pistol however, had one and the weapon should fire unless they had shortened the firing pin. Cole would rather have had a shoulder holster instead of the hip holster, but he'd just deal with it. Cole and Jake came out their rooms at almost the same time, heading for the latrine to fill their canteens.
"You square?" Jake asked.
"Yeah, but my rifle is missing its firing pin."
"Yeah, mine too."
"Yeah, you think we're going to do anything tonight?" Cole asked.
"I'd bet on it. Make sure you put your red lens in your flashlight. If they do anything, it will be after midnight. Get some shuteye and be ready."
"Roger that."
Cole went back to his room and took off his boots, then lay down on the prison mattress. His mental alarm woke him just before midnight. Cole laced his boots up and went to the latrine. When he came back he checked his gear again and made sure everything was securely attached to his harness. He pulled out his canteen and walking back to the latrine, drained the canteen and filled it again. He placed the canteen back in its pouch and turned the light back off.
At 1245 his door opened and one of the General's men from the classroom stuck his head and hand in the room and turned on the overhead light. He stood there and stared at Cole for a second.
"Did you G2 this course?"
"Nope, just figured something like this would happen."
"Grab your gear and meet me outside."
Cole put on his web gear and ruck and with weapon in hand, walked silently outside.
Jake and the man quickly joined him.
Handing Cole a piece of paper and a folded map, the man said. "You two are to go to these coordinates. There is a junk car there next to the wood line. Wait there for someone to pick you up. If you have problems or get lost, shoot up a flare. Plot your route and get out of here. Do the best you can."
"Sir, my rifle doesn't have a firing pin." Cole said.
"Mine doesn't either." Jake echoed.
The man grinned and reached into a shirt pocket, held up two firing pins and handed them to Cole and Jake. The two quickly broke open their rifles, pulled the bolt carrier group out, and replaced the firing pins.
Jake pulled out his poncho while Cole got on the ground, spreading out the map out and unclipped his flashlight. When Jake had him covered with the poncho, Cole turned on the red filtered light and quickly found the coordinates. He plotted a route but at the same time was memorizing the map. He wouldn't have to pull it out again the rest of the night. Cole turned off the light and stood up. Jake rolled up the poncho and stuffed it into his rucksack.
"Let's go." Cole said. "It's only ten klicks. If they don't come before dawn, we can catch some Zs."

Chapter 25 - On The Road Again
The two moved through the dark forest quickly, but silently. Detouring around low terrain, where the thicker brush could be found, their route was longer, but easier to traverse. They stopped approximately halfway between a stream junction and a steep hill Cole had used as an attack point to drink water and rest for ten minutes. Before leaving, they refilled the single canteens they'd drained and picked up their pace.
When they reached their checkpoint, they scouted around and found no one, so they went further back into the underbrush and dropped their rucks. Setting their rucksacks against a tree, they used them as backrests and dozed until they heard a vehicle coming just at BMNT. Quickly slipping on the shoulder straps of their rucksacks, they moved to within view of the derelict car. A man got out of rvival truck, leaned against the fender and lit a cigarette.
The two silently moved forward within a few feet of the man. Jake lifted his rifle and snapped the safety off. The sound was loud enough that the man froze, his hand still holding the cigarette a couple of inches from his mouth.
"You're not supposed to be doing sh!t like that." He growled.
"Well, I wanted to get your attention and we weren't given any bona fides." Jake said, grinning.
"Smart Ass! Get into the truck. Breakfast is waiting."
For the next several days, they had classes in combative techniques, which Cole and Jake had received in Special Forces training, survival (both wilderness and urban, irregular weaponry, some of which Cole knew, especially the silenced High Standard .22s. At night, for the first four days, was a repeat of their first night with varying distances, and of course they were given bona fides. On the fifth night, however, they went it alone. After a couple of nights of this, three of the six attendees decided there were other things they'd rather be doing. The female held in there. Cole was surprised. They got at least four hours of sleep a night, comfortable mattress to sleep on, plenty of chow and all the water they could drink from the streams. Some people were just too soft.
After two weeks, one day everything changed. Someone decided that a lecture on the history of Adak Island, Alaska was appropriate. Cole did find it interesting and was enjoying the lecture when General Field walked in, interrupting the lecture.
"Thank you Joe, I'll take it from here."
"You three have stuck it out and performed well. Instead of continuing on to your gaining units, you have an option to go directly to another training facility, for some 'less strenuous' training. If you decide to continue on to your unit, sometime in the future, you may receive orders to attend further training. It is your choice.
Cole looked at Jake. In for a penny, in for a pound. They'd ride this horse and see where it took them. The female also decided to stick with it. They were given a couple of days to clean and turn in their issued gear and weapons and wait for their orders to be cut. The General did hand them a six-pack of beer as they were cleaning weapons that afternoon.
The female joined them at the weapons cleaning table.
"Hi, my name's Cole and he's Jake."
"Hi. I'm Gail Hinton, and no calling me 'Hurricane Hinton'."
Cole grinned. "Now, why would anyone do a thing like that?"
"I sometimes have anger issues when someone thinks I can't do something and won't give me a chance to prove I can."
"Well, after the last few weeks, if the subject comes up, you'll have to prove to me you can't before I believe you."
Gail cracked a small smile. "Thanks."
The three worked together cleaning the field gear and inspected each other's gear to make sure nothing had been overlooked.
When they were issued their orders, there was an address in Mineral Wells Texas they were to report two in six days.
"SIX DAYS?" We could make it in less than two and a half!" What gives?" Cole exclaimed.
"One of the mysteries of the Army. It's either hurry up and wait, or wait and hurry up. "You know, I think the quickest way to get there from here is to take I-81 to I-40 to Memphis. There's another interstate that goes from there to Texas, I think, but I can't remember the name. We could hold up in Memphis for a day or so, get some good chow and listen to some music, then go on our merry way." Jake grinned.
"Sounds like a plan." Cole grinned.
Cole looked at Gail. "What about you?"
"Do you guys mind if I tag along?"
"Of course not! Always could use another member of the convoy."
They put their bags in their trucks, Gail had an '87 S10 with a camper shell.
Jake took lead, Gal to the center and Cole pulled up at the six. THey refueled at a truckstop in Martinsville, and used the restrooms. Cole bought another handheld CB and handed it to Gail.
"I won't have you buying me things." Gail
Okay, no problem. You can borrow the one I was using, and I get the new one. I'd like to have comms between us on the road."
Gail pursed her lips, looked at Cole, then looked at the new radio. "Give me the new one then."
Cole chuckled and helped her set it up and set the channel on the radio. They pulled out of the truckstop and headed up Highway 58 to join I-81. They decided to drive all the way through the eleven hour trip, only making pit and fuel stops. They arrived in Memphis at 1900 that night and stayed at the same Holiday Inn Cole and Jake had stayed at before.
"I have to find another place." Gail said. "I can't afford this."
Cole grinned. "It's on me. I have a VIP card and if I accumulate enough points I'll get a six-pack of Coke. Come on, think unit integrity, physical security, all that stuff."
Gail frowned. "Okay, but no adjoining rooms, buster."
"Okay then, you get the fifth floor room and Jake and I will keep the first floor rooms."
Of course Cole got all the rooms on the first floor, with the help of a carefully folded $20 bill. Gail's room was at the far end of the hallway. They met out in the lobby thirty minutes later and took a taxi to a BBQ restaurant and ate copious amounts from their combo platters and chased it down with cold beer. Just next door to the restaurant was a blues club where they sat for a couple of hours drinking beer and listening to the soulful music.
They all felt good the next morning at breakfast so they decided to continue on. They would take it easy drive and stop somewhere for the evening between Little Rock and Dallas. They had to go to Little Rock and catch I-30 down to Dallas and decided to spend a little time in Dallas before going out to Mineral Wells.
They made a fuel/pit stop outside of Prescott, Arkansas and Gail mentioned getting something to eat.
Jake frowned. "Well, the next wide place in the road will be Hope, Arkansas and I'll be damned if I'll eat a meal in a place that birthed that POS Bill Clinton. Texarkana isn't that far beyond and besides, it'll build your appetite."
They did go on to Texarkana and there was a Holiday Inn. They fueled up before getting their rooms and again, a little extra gratuity got them choice rooms. They ate at ribeyes with fixin's at a steakhouse and returned to the hotel bar to relax over beers.
"So Gail, where did you grow up?" Cole asked.
"In the Missouri Ozarks. Spent my whole life there."
"What made you join the Army?"
Gail frowned. "In my neck of the woods, everyone expects you to fit into a specific box. Girl grows up, finishes high school, expected to marry a dirt farmer or a pulp wood logger, have six ankle biters and be happy with it." I needed to see what else this world had to offer. You? Where did you grow up?"
"Well, My first ten years I grew up near Manassas, Virginia, Then my mother was killed in an auto accident and my father and I moved to eastern Tennessee."
"Oh, I love the Appalachian Mountains!" Gail said.
"Yeah, I do too. When I get out, I'm going back."
"You're not going to make the Army a career?"
"I don't know. I still haven't made up my mind."
They had a couple more beers and went to their rooms to get some rest.

Don't know how it happened, but missed a chapter and here is my comment on the chapter.
Cole shook his head, instead getting a bottle of Pepsi and pouring two packs of peanuts into it.
Hopefully Cole took a good drink out of his pepsi before adding the peanuts or he would have had pepsi and peanuts exploding out of the bottle.
Prefer Coke over pepsi which tastes like sugar with no kick like Coke.
Now as to Mineral Wells. It is called Mineral Wells due to mineral water coming out of the wells which started a bonanza for health treatment including a large hotel that catered to those seeking health treatments from the mineral water. This was decades ago.
Texas is my old stomping grounds.
Thanks N for the story.
Now what will happen in Mineral Wells?

Chapter 26 - The Shacks
They met for breakfast and mapped out their plan of attack.
"It's around 260 miles to Mineral Wells from here. We don't have to be at that address until 1300 day after tomorrow. Why don't we go down to Fort Worth, get rooms and kick around and make the one hour drive Thursday morning to Mineral wells?" Cole asked.
"I'm for it" Gail said.
"Suits me. I just want to go to the Stockyards and get a steak." Jake said.
Everyone turned on their CBs and made a radio check then Cole led out. When they got to Fort Worth, Cole found the Holiday in was hell and gone away from the stockyards so got rooms at a closer hotel across the street from the Stockyards. They quickly checked in and walked down to the Cattleman's Steakhouse for lunch. They walked around the cowboy museum and other sites then window shopped at the western wear stores. They decided to return to the hotel, get a couple of hour's rest and go across the street to Billy Bob's for and early dinner.
The food that evening was good, as well as the music, and the beer was cold, but they opted to return to the hotel at 2200 because they wanted to be fresh for what was to come the next day.
They met in the lobby and decided to get breakfast on the way out of time. Jake led and Gail pull up the rear. Spotting an IHOP, Jake pulled off the highway and they had a leisurely breakfast. Cole led the rest of the way to the address in Mineral Wells. It turned out to be a fabric store in a strip mall.
"Are you sure this is the place?" Gail asked.
"This is the address. They went inside and were greeted by an elderly lady.
"May I help you?"
"Uh, yes ma'am, we were told to come here." Cole said.
"Do you have some I.D.?"
The three showed her their military I.D. cards. She opened the cash register drawer and pulled out a folded sheet of paper and handed it to Cole.
"Go out of the parking lot, take a right and follow the strip map."
They left the shop and gathered in front of their trucks as Cole studied the strip map.
"Well, wherever we are going is about twenty miles from here."
"One more turn." Cole said over the radio.
"This damn sure isn't five star scenery." Jake replied.
Cole came from around a bend into an open area with about eight wooden buildings spread around. He slowed and pulled up to the one that had a couple of vehicles in front of it. Waiting for Gail and Jake to join him, he then knocked on the door.
"COME ON IN!"
The insides of the building were just as rustic as the outsides.
"Grab a chair and have a seat." A slightly bald man said.
"Welcome to the Shacks. For the next three weeks you're going to be trained in observation, assessment, and intelligence gathering. The culmination exercise will last two weeks. You had better learn your business because if you get caught during the exercise, we have no reciprocity agreements with local law enforcement, hell, they don't even know we exist. You will be trained by the most qualified people in the business. You may take notes during your training but the notes cannot leave the classroom. In fact, anything you write down in the classroom can't leave it. After completing a block of instruction, all notes and notebooks will be incinerated, so you better have good memories. Instruction will begin tomorrow at 0900 in D-Shack. Chow is at 0700, 1200 and 1730, and if you want to do any physical training, do it on your own. There is a marked 5-mile running loop that begins at D-Shack. Shacks A and B have two rooms each and a latrine. No double bunking. If you have any questions between now and start of instruction tomorrow, someone will be manning this office. Any questions?"
"No Sir."
"Move your vehicles over to the graveled parking area across the trail, go ahead and stow your gear and get settled in."
The three moved their vehicles, grabbed their travel gear, and went to select their quarters. Cole and Jake took Shack A and Gail took Shack B. They put their clothes away and checked the latrine out then went outside. There was a gazebo, if you could call it that. It was just a frame with tin sheets on top and a picnic table under it. They went over and took a seat.
"Well, this is a fine mess you've gotten us into Stanley!" Jake said, in his best Oliver Hardy voice.
Gail giggled. "Have you two ever done anything like this?"
"Just target analysis. I'm sure we'll all learn a thing or two. Say, Cole. You're going to have a huge advantage over us." Jake said.
"Why is that?" Gail asked.
"This dude can just thumb through a book and memorize the while dang thing. He has a photographic memory."
"Well, when we do the culmination exercise, I hope they let us run as a team." Gail commented.
"Yeah, it would make it easier." Cole said.
They had classes each day and practical exercises. After evening chow, one of their "keepers" unlocked the classroom and they studied for another two hours. They were up at 0500 and did PT together as a team. Most days instruction started at 0900 but sometimes earlier, depending on what they were doing that day. One of the things they were trained to do was blend in with the local populace, so as part of their training, they were given time to go to the Good Will store and consignment shops and obtain clothing.
Finally the training was over and they were given their culmination exercise briefing. They were given the mission of preparing an Order of Battle packet on the 3631st Signal Company, 36th Infantry Division, Texas National Guard. The packet would include the hierarchical organization, command structure, strength, disposition of personnel, and equipment of units. The problem was the 3631st Signal company was over 500 miles away in New Mexico. Whatever they need for the operation was provided to them. When Cole asked for the organizational chart for the 36th Infantry Division, they were given it only down to showing the 3631st and nothing below that, which was just as good because now he knew their immediate command above them was in the same town and probably the same facility. They were provided cameras, scopes and vehicles and were hesitant about some of the other things Jake and Cole had asked for but provided them anyway. Soon the three took off in the middle of the night and got rooms at a motel a few miles from their target.
The next few days were mainly surveillance, noting the arrival times of the full-time guardsmen and civilians. This included surveillance photos. Then the tricky part had to be done. Cole wanted to gain access to the facility to gather more information. They had located the alarm system and after slipping on black latex gloves, Jake bypassed that and surveillance cameras were turned off. Gail opened a side door with a lock pick set and they found the offices they were looking for. Gail went to the S1 section where she found all the personnel records of the members of the unit, printed rosters and address of the unit members, complete deployment packets including medical conditions of the unit members. There were 125 personnel assigned to the unit and they had to hurry to get the records copied. Fortunately, there was a good copier there but it could only be used by inserting the military ID card of the user into the machine before using it. No problem. Gail unlocked the machine, switched a couple of wires and started copying. Cole came in to help there while Jake was pulling maintenance files of all the equipment and making copies on another copier. Another bonus he found was the Tale of Organization and Equipment (TOE) for the unit. Two hours before anyone normally showed up, they were outside the installation gate with full rucks and heading through the underbrush to their vehicle hidden behind an abandoned gas station a mile away. They took turns driving through the day to get back to the Shacks. They secured everything in Cole's room and got some much needed rest.
The next morning, the real work was before them. Now they had to put all this together in an organized manner and draft the report. They had been told for every hour of surveillance it took four hours to write the report. They finished the report a day early and turned in the 15 binders with everything you would ever want to know about the 3631st Signal Company, collated and tabbed. They weren't given a pass or fail on the report. Three days later they were handed orders for them to report to building H-561 at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
