Thermostat
How do you know what to set your thermostat? Easy, during the summer ask a household member that doesn't pay utility bills what temperature they want to set the thermostat to, that is what you set it at during the winter. During the winter ask them again and that is what you set it at during the summer.

Very logical way of setting the thermostat ;-)
My spreadsheet for the runtime of the battery bank on the solar backup system under different loads has a place to put the thermostat setting and the average outdoor temperature to get a guess of what % of the time the furnace will be on. Lots easier on the battery bank if you heat with the gas logs and a kerosene heater and only run the furnace blower (460 watts) for a few minutes each hour - just enough to keep the part of the basement with water pipes in it above freezing - and NOT try to heat ALL the conditioned space when running on backup power. No one will be living in the basement so it's fine if much of it is only a few degrees above freezing - parts of it will be close to ground temperature (something above freezing) because of the concrete slab floor and the below-ground walls.
Historically, the lowest December temperature was -1F. Lowest in January was -4F. The record 24 hour December snowfall was 5.99" (7" at my house 4 years ago, but I'm not their official point of record). The biggest 24 hour swing was in January with a low of 11F and a high of 70F (recorded on my weather station). If you don't like the weather here, wait a couple of hours ;-)
