Having a private ambulance service 2+ miles from us and a County Fire Station 4 miles from us, it's not unusual to hear sirens passing by up on the main road. It is unusual to hear sirens winding down near the house. Today, that was a ladder truck, two pumpers and a Chief's pickup at a house across the road. That's eight or ten guys in full gear, some with the SCBA air tanks.
A few seconds talking with the man in front of the house and three firefighters go inside, one carrying a large fire extinguisher and the others with an axe and drywall tearout tools. Another firefighter is making his way to the back of the house and two are pulling hoses off the back of the pumper that's parked at the fire hydrant.
A few minutes later, the ones who went inside are coming back out, the hoses are being stacked back on that pumper and another firefighter is carrying a big fan inside.
I'll guess a kitchen fire, possibly limited to the stovetop, based on the time the firefighters were inside. If you don't have fire extinguishers ready for use - near the stove, near the fireplace, near the solar power equipment, etc - you might not be able to do more than wait outside to meet the firetrucks when they arrive.
Walmart has Kidde 1A:10BC extinguishers for $13.22 each in groups of 4 (free shipping). No, it won't control a big fire but it could slow things for a bit while you call 911.
A later look out the window and there's a truck with "Construction" on the side of it pulling away from that house. Getting estimates for cleanup and/or repair? Even a small fire can have long term impact: smoke smell, cleaning and painting, maybe a new stove, bad dreams for kids and possibly adults...
Do you have fire extinguishers in place?
