Pat showed up at 12:55. Becky was quick to answer the door.
"Hi, come on in. You can hang your hat and coat there by the door."
Pat took off his hat and coat and turned around, rubbing his hands to warm them up. Becky smirked when she saw the action.
"Dad has a hat like this around somewhere. Is it a Tilley?" She asked, taking the hat from his hands.
"Oh look! It has earflaps!" Becky squealed.
She hung the hat up on a peg.
"Come on in the kitchen. Everyone is hanging out around the breakfast bar."
"Everybody, this is Pat…."
"Goode." Pat answered. "Pat Goode."
"Come one in and grab a stool, Pat." Billy invited. "Damn cold out today."
"Would you like a cup of coffee, Pat?" Becky asked.
"Uh…yes, black please."
Amy and Judy were helping Alice set the dining room table. Cal came in, rolling up his sleeves.
"Hey Pat. You get settled in?"
"Yes sir. It's a nice apartment."
"Gabby, that smells delicious!"
Gabby turned from the stove and beamed.
"Well, I guess everything is ready." Siobhan said. "If everyone will take their seats at the table, we'll plate it and bring it in."
Becky had gotten the rest of the kids seated and poured their drinks. Judy poured water into everyone's water glasses and Gabby poured wine for those who wanted it.
Once everyone had their food, Cal led them in a blessing.
Billy took a bite of the potatoes and beef and smiled. "This hits the spot on a day like this!"
Becky watched as Pat took his first bite. A look of pleasure crossed his fact.
"Beats MREs, doesn't it Pat?" Cal asked.
Pat wiped his mouth with his napkin. "After eating Meals, Ready To Eat, for the last 8 out of 12 months, I'm not much of a food critic. However, this IS the most pleasurable meal I've eaten in a long, long time."
"Becky's pretty good at opening cans too!" Bill commented.
Becky smiled sweetly at Bill. "Billy, remind me to can you after lunch."
"Becky is an excellent cook. Don't tease her Bill." Siobhan said.
"So, you were with 5th Group. Pat?"
"Yes sir."
"Did you know an Art Davis? He was an E-7 when I got out."
"Yes sir. He went on to make Command Sergeant Major, one of the more sane voices in 3rd Battalion Headquarters."
"He is a good man."
They finished scraping their bowls and Alice began bringing out strawberry short cake with fresh, homemade whip cream. Brigid was so excited she was bouncing in her seat. Pat took a bite and slowly closed his eyes.
"It's good, isn't it Pat?" Becky made the cake AND the whip cream. And it didn't come out of a can, Bill."
Bill grinned at Becky, who stuck her tongue out at him."
Pat finished his short cake and settled back, sighing.
"Would you like some more Pat?" Becky asked.
"No thank you. I just want to savor the flavors still bursting in my mouth."
Cal chuckled. "We have to watch it around here. The women will try and make you fat!"
"Cal Coleman, you know that's not so!" Siobhan scolded.
"Come on Pat, let's relax in the Great Room."
Pat got up and started clearing his dishes.
"No Pat, I'll get those. Go with Dad." Becky said.
Pat followed Cal into the Great Room and took a seat in an armchair turned slightly towards Cal's recliner.
"Uh..Cal..I'd like to ask your permission to ask Becky out."
Cal tapped his finger on the arm of the chair.
"Pat, you don't need my permission. Becky is a college woman. I don't tell her who she can or can't date. If Becky is showing interests in you, then it's simply because she's interested. But let me give you some advice. If you feel can't return that interest on the same level, tell her so. She can take a punch in the gut."
"Yes sir."
"And quit with the sir stuff. I'm old enough without you making me feel even older.
Pat grinned. "Sure thing, Cal."
"Has Andy kitted you out yet?"
"He said he was going to wait until after the holidays."
"Did he talk to you about the Auxiliary Police and Reserve Deputy duties?"
"Yes, and I'm willing."
"Good. Pat, we've tried to fill out our little community here with good people. So far, we're batting a thousand."
"I will give my best for you, the company and the Ranch."
"That's all I ask." Cal said.
Becky walked in. "Want to take a ride?"
"Sure."
They got their hats and coats on and went outside.
"Let's take an EV. It has a heater."
They drove down to the greenhouses and Becky gave him a tour. She zig-zagged around the Ranch, and stopped at the airfield. Entering a hangar, she turned on the lights and walked over to a red plane.
"This one's mine!" She said.
Pat grinned. "Very good likeness on the nose art, Baroness."
"Yes, You may kiss my hand." Becky giggled, holding out her hand to him.
Pat took her hand, but pulled her to him and kissed her lightly on the lips.
"You shouldn't kiss me like that, Pat."
"Why not, Becky?"
She looked into his eyes and with a slight smile and said, "Because I like it too much."

Becky quietly drove the EV back to the house. They both ran up the steps and quickly hung up their coats and hats and rushed over to the fireplace, warming themselves.
"It's getting colder out there!" Becky said.
"Weather station says we'll get about 6 inches of snow tonight." Bill said.
"Oh! A White Christmas!" Becky squealed.
She turned and started toasting her front side.
"Billy, did you see Momma's new coffee table?"
"Where?"
"Over here in the reading room." Said Becky walking to the coffee table.
Bill came over. "Oh, neat."
"What's with the rock?" Bill asked
Siobhan walked over. "Gauche, Bill."
"That's a Desert Rose." Explained Pat. "They are monoclinic crystals found in Algeria, Argentina, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Spain, Tunisia, and even in the U.S.
"It has a special meaning to some people on this ranch." Siobhan said.
Cal walked in. "Bill, can you help me put the EVs in the underground garage? We'll take the Suburban and Tahoes to Church in case it starts snowing during the service.
"Underground garage?" Pat said.
"Oh yeah. Come on Pat, You can help. There's three EVs parked outside."
They all put on their hats and coats on and each got into an EV and headed to the sloping wall at the base of the mesa. Cal pressed a button on a remote and the hidden door rose up. Wheeling the RV around, he backed the EV to the back of the garage, allowing room for the other two. After plugging them in to the chargers, the men walked outside and Cal lowered the door. He got the Suburban out of the garage Siobhan had built for the K5 and combat parked it by the house.
"Bill, if you want, you and Becky can park your vehicles in the maintenance bay parking area tonight so they're not covered in snow in the morning Pat, you should do the same."
"I think we will." Bill said.
They went into the house. Siobhan and the girls were still in the reading room discussing the items in the coffee table.
"Siobhan, what do you think of inviting Jacque and Francine to spend the night. They may encounter some trouble getting here tomorrow if it snows too much."
Siobhan looked at Bill and Gabby. "You guys mind taking our suite in the shelter for the next couple of nights?"
"Suite?" Said Gabby, with a curious expression.
"Bill, you haven't shown her yet? Well show her now, GO!"
They watched to two head for the study. Becky, with a playful grin, took Pat's hand and said, "Come on!"
Cal shook his head. "You need to speak to our daughter. She is not showing much restraint."
Siobhan stood and put her arms around Cal's neck. Oh, I don't know. I would have acted the same way that night in Baghdad if I had caught you."
Cal kissed her and pulled his phone out to call Jacque.
"Tell Jacque if Francine was going to cook anything, we can do it here. Just bring an overnight bag and whatever needed and come here right after Church." Siobhan said.
Bill opened the shelter entrance in the study and a large puff of air greeted them as the door was opened. An amazed Pat was pulled through the door by Becky. Becky closed the door and continued down the corridor, following Billy and Gabby.
"What is this place?" Pat asked.
"It's a survival shelter. Dad's been working on it for ages. The people on this Ranch could live down here for years. There's food, water, power and supplies, and bedrooms here for everyone."
When Bill and Gabby stopped at Cal and Siobhan's suite while Becky continued on down a couple of more doors and opened a door. Reaching inside the door she pressed a light switch.
"Wow! This is just like a hotel room!" Pat said.
"Yeah, they're pretty much all the same except Dad let the families customize the paint schemes and furnishings to suit the people assigned to the room."
"How big is this place?"
"I'm not sure. I think they've excavated around ½ of the stable portions of the mesa."
"Let's head back." Becky said. "I've got a chill. The shelter stays a constant temperature but I got warmed up next to the fireplace.
They walked out and closed the door continuing back down the corridor where they had left Bill and Gabby. As they neared her parent's suite, Bill and Gabby came out.
"Nice isn't it?" Becky asked Gabby.
Gabby grinned and nodded.
Bill resealed the door when they returned to the study.
"I better go and get ready for church." Pat said.
"You really don't need to. The people here aren't ostentatious as you can find in some houses of worship. You are more than fine just the way you are.
Come on, let's snuggle on the couch.

As the congregation began filing out of the church, the snow started. Bill, Jacque, and Becky headed toward the maintenance facility and pulled inside. Cal parked in the garage and they entered the house using the enclosed walkway. Cal started coffee and Siobhan brought out the ingredients to make cocoa.
Bill, Gabby, Becky, Pat, Jacque and Francine came in through the shelter entrance.
"The shelter feels warm compared to what it is outside." Bill said
Becky looked at the digital thermometer. "I guess so! It's 5 degrees outside!"
Siobhan motioned for Francine to come with her to the kitchen.
"Francine, it is bitter cold out there. Your bags are already in here, why don't you and Jacque take one of the shelter suites for the night."
"That might be best." Francine said. "Is there heat in there?"
"Yes, but on a night like this, if I were you, I'd turn it down and make my own heat!" Siobhan grinned.
Francine blushed.
Siobhan heated the milk and added the ingredients. When the cocoa was ready, she transferred it to a carafe. Plates of cookies and slices of cake were laid out. She'd let everyone serve themselves.
Cathleen and Michael came in, followed quickly by Lilly and Nick, then Aileen and Glen. Five minutes later Sean and Aedan arrived.
Cal poured a cup of coffee and came into the Great Room. "Well, looks like we'll have a crowd for breakfast."
"I'm not going out in that again!" Lilly said. "We've got clothes in the shelter. We'll spend the night here."
"Everyone!" There's coffee, cocoa and eggnog in the kitchen. You'll have to add your on 'nog.'"
"You want coffee Pat?" Becky asked?
"I'll come with you." Pat said.
Cathleen whispered to Siobhan, "What's up with that?"
Siobhan grinned.
Amy went over to Cal and pulled on his arm. "Come on Daddy, Christmas Carol time!"
She pulled him over to the piano. What do you want to sing first?" Cal asked her.
"Jingle Bells!"
Cal started playing and the others filtered over and sang along with Amy.
Then Siobhan, Cathleen Aileen and Lilly sang 'Silent Night.'" Brigid danced around for every song.
They took a break and replenished their drinks.
"Momma, are we going to open one present tonight?" Becky asked.
Siobhan looked around the room. All the girls were nodding, Amy was saying "YES, YES, YES!" and Brigid was jumping up and down.
"Okay then. You called it, so you get to hand them out." Siobhan told Becky.
Becky pulled Pat out of his seat. "Come on. Help me."
Becky searched through the gifts and handed them the Pat, one by one. When everyone had a gift, Becky stood up with one more gift. "…and one for Pat!"
Pat was stunned. "Becky, I didn't have a chance to get you something!"
"I'll think of something. Now open your gift!"
Pat opened the package and it was a pair of heavy leather gloves. "Thank you. I really could have used these this morning."
"A man should have a good pair of gloves in the winter on a ranch in Colorado." Becky said, smiling.
Pat went to the kitchen to get some eggnog. As he was going back into the Great Room, Becky was standing in the archway with her hands behind her back, smiling.
"I'll take my present now," she said, looking up.
A ball of mistletoe hung from the center of the arch. He leaned down and kissed her softly.
Becky opened her eyes slowly. "Yes, I think like that VERY much."
The women started getting the kids ready for bed while the men bagged the torn wrapping paper and generally cleaned a little.
"Pat you might as well stay too. I know it's a short drive but that weather is nasty out there. Come on, I'll show you where you can rack out." Cal said.
Pat followed Cal back into the shelter.
"I'll put you in one of the spare suits. You can turn the heat up or you can throw an extra blanket on the bed. There's extras in the closet. Come on back out and we'll have a nightcap." "I need to go to my Jeep. I've got a GO bag with spare cloths in there." Pat said.
"Okay, come on back out when you're ready."
"Where's Pat?" Siobhan asked.
"I put him in 26. He's gone to get some spare clothes from his Jeep."
Becky came back out. "Where's Pat?"
Your Father showed him where to sleep. Pat went to his Jeep to get his spare clothes. Becky, are you planning to go to his room tonight?"
"No, Momma. It's a little soon."
"Okay. Would you like a glass of Sherry?"
"Yes, I think I would.
The went into the Great Room to the dry bar and poured glasses of Sherry. They had just settled down when Pat came back in.
Cal stood and went over to the bar. "Pat, I have Gentleman Jack, six different Scotches, Irish Whiskey…both Michael Collins and Jameson, Rye…name your poison?"
"I'll have the Jack, neat."
Cal poured his drink and handed it to him. "Sit, sit."
Becky patted the couch next to her and he went over.
Cal yawned. "It's been a long day."
"I'll probably have to pry Brigid out of her bed with a crowbar in the morning. She danced around all night." Siobhan laughed.
"I'll bet you won't!" Becky said. As soon as Amy says, 'Santa Clause.' she'll be out of that bed like a cannon shot."
"Cal, did you put the roasts in the fridge in the shelter?"
"Yes Dear."
"I'll need you to bring those out early in the morning."
"Of course Dear."
"You're being a chooch."
"You're correct Dear."
Becky giggled behind her hand.
"Come on you goof. Help me bring in the presents in before you fall asleep."
"Pat and I will help." Becky said.
"Okay, but no peeking and shaking the presents!"

Cal shoveled out a few ashes and rebuilt the fire in the fireplace. Siobhan and Becky were preparing cinnamon rolls to go with the hearty breakfast.
"It doesn't look that bad out this morning." Siobhan commented.
Cal pulled up the weather page on the kitchen computer. "The temperature is 5 degrees and the wind blowing at 20 miles per hour gives you a wind chill of -15 degrees. Only good thing is it is a powdery snow and is blowing off the roads."
"I wasn't planning to go out anyway." Siobhan replied.
"God help us! I don't need any calamities today."
"Cal, the bag of pancake mix is almost empty. Could you get another from the pantry? Oh! And another quart of dried blueberries."
Cal brought back a five pound bag of buttermilk pancake mix and a quart of dried blueberries. He poured The rest of the bag into a large bowl, then added another three cups of the mix to the bowl. Adding water, he stirred the lumps out then added blueberries.
Siobhan had started frying bacon in the 16 inch frying pan when Becky and Amy came in. They started cracking eggs into a bowl.
They were alerted to other early risers when they heard a muffled "Oh! That smells good!"
Amy came in first, followed by Aileen, Cathleen and Lilly.
"Where are the guys?" Siobhan asked.
"We used the bathrooms first." Laughed Cathleen.
Cal had been filling thermal carafes since he had gotten up and placed them at the end of the breakfast bar with a tray of mugs and containers of creamer and sugar. Becky iced the cinnamon rolls and sat them near the coffee. The girls made a beeline for them.
Siobhan finished cooking the second pound of bacon and place it in the warm oven. Alice took over, frying the ham to give Siobhan a break. As soon as she had a short break, she started making biscuits.
"Amy, go wake Brigid, Kaitlin, and the boys."
Amy grinned and went running out. They heard her yelling "Santa Claus! Santa Claus!" In no time the kids came running in, heading straight for the Christmas tree. Siobhan had her camera out and moved around the room, capturing the antics of the children. Brigid had unwrapped a fluffy unicorn and didn't bother with the rest her presents. She just sat there, lovingly hugging the stuffed toy. Judy and Becky got down on the floor, trying to coordinate the mayhem and keeping the trash cleaned up.
Cal poured another cup of coffee and gazed around at his family and friends. Setting his cup down, he picked up his phone and called the Monitoring Room .
"How's everything Aaron?"
"Severe Clear for today Cal. Clouds are breaking and no security concerns detected."
"Good. The girls will be bringing down your Christmas dinner later."
"Okay Cal, thanks."
"Let's give out the presents before breakfast! Aileen said."
With that, Becky began handing out gifts. When she came to Amy's gift to Bill, she handed it to Amy. Amy walked over and said, "I made this for you Billy."
Bill tore the paper off and removed the protective cardboard. He was silent as he studied the painting. "Amy, I thought your sketch was great, but this is absolutely beautiful! Give me a hug!"
Amy's smile was a mile wide as she hugged her big brother.
Siobhan had given all the adult girls gift certificates for full treatments at Beautifeye Day Spa.
"Oh! Let's do a girls' day to get prettied up for the New Year's Eve Party!" Cathleen said. All the women agreed.
Cal gave all the men $100 gift cards for Cabela's, for which Cal received plenty of grins.
He didn't give Bill a gift card, he got Bill a pilot's modular kneeboard. For Beck and Gabby, Bush Pilot Survival kits to augment their plane survival kits. The kits contained a 1892 Alaskan Take-Down Rifle in .357 Mag, made by Taylor's Firearms. Cal had replaced the original knives in the kits with a 101/2 inch Ka-Bar hunting knife. Also in the kits were Titan waterproof matches, U.S. Government issued Doan magnesium fire starter, Lightning Strike fire starter, a Crusader Cooking System, a polyester film space blanket, tube tent large enough for two adults, a TruArc 3 flat scouting compass, and 50-feet of Mil. Spec. 750 Parachute cord. Cal also placed 50 rounds of Federal 158 Grain JHP ammo in the kits. Amy got an open account at the Art Center art supply store, Siobhan picked out presents for Evan, Grady, Kaitlin and Brigid.
Cal was uncertain what to give Siobhan. She didn't wear much jewelry, just her wedding and engagement rings, a Claddagh ring on her right hand and, of course, her normal stud earrings, so he also got her a gift certificate for Beautifeye and had ordered from a jeweler in New York, a Ladies Emerald Heart Claddagh Ring and shamrock earrings with emerald insets.
Becky saved Pat's gift for last. When he opened it, he looked at Becky and grinned. "Yeah, I know...'a man on a ranch needs a good pocket knife'."
With the gift giving out of the way, the women told the men to stay out of the kitchen and the men dutifully stayed out of their way.
"Dad. I didn't get a Bush Pilot Survival Kit?" Bill asked.
Cal grinned. "Yours and mine are in the armory, except our rifles are chambered for .44 mag. I figured you wouldn't have much space to cram a kit in an F-35 Lightning II. I'll keep it here for you."
After getting the kids fed, the women called the men in. They weren't eating their Christmas dinner until 3:00 so they ate enough to tide them over.
With the dishes done, all the women, including Francine, began preparations for the Christmas dinner. Many hands make light work. Cal prepared the Prime Rib roasts to be cooked in the shelter kitchen. The two ovens in the house kitchen were in use cooking pies and casseroles. Two of the three ovens in the shelter kitchen were used for warming ovens.
The men, being men, slipped out to the armory and checked out Bill and Cal's survival kits. They spent most of the morning there discussing everything from ammo, ballistics, weapons, and shooting techniques until Cal's phone alarm let him know it was time to put the roasts in the oven. Pat went with Cal and helped carry the roasts to the kitchen.

“Turn the stove off, we’ve got a call.” Ted said.
Carla switched the oven off and ran and got her coveralls. They rushed to the clinic and Ted started the ambulance. Carla went inside and grabbed the kits that were in danger of freezing if left in the ambulance and put them in the back. While Ted maneuvered the ambulance through the gate, Carla was flipping on rear heater switches and power to those built in devices they might have to use.
“Who is it?”
“Corson place. Possible broken leg.”
They were at the residence within ten minutes. They grabbed their kits and were met at the door by a young man.
“She’s in here.”
“What happened Ma’am?”
“I was going into the cellar to get a jar of green beans and somehow my right foot slid to the right on the step and went through two posts. I fell forward and felt something pop.”
Ted slowly extended her leg and she winced. He softly pressed along the back of her leg and around her knee, watching her reaction. Ma’am, does it hurt the most when I press here?”
“Yes, right there.”
Ted hit the speed dial number for Doc Gaddy.
“Doc, I’ve got a lady who took a fall and badly extended her right leg. I’m sure it’s a ligament tear, more than likely the ACL, but I want to do some x-rays to be positive.”
“Okay. You both are registered to perform radiologic procedures, correct?”
“Yes, we just need you for some pain killers.”
“Okay, I’m on my way. How are the roads?”
“County roads are fair, Ranch road is good.”
“Okay, I’ll see you a bit.”
Ted and Carla put Mrs. Corson in an inflatable leg cast and placed her on the Gurney. Her 16 year old son rode in the ambulance. When they arrived at the clinic Doc Gaddy was already there. They wheeled Mrs. Corson into the exam room and Doc wheeled the portable x-ray machine over.
“From here on, I’m just the guy who fills out the prescription. I’ll observe.”
Dr. Gaddy watched as they took the x-rays and looked at them. Ted and Carla consulted about them then went in and talked to Mrs. Corson.“
“Mrs. Corson, you have some damage to your ACL. The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, provides the primary restraint to forward motion of the shin bone, What you have is what we call a Grade 2 ACL injury. This means there was a partial tear of the ligament when it was over-stretched. You shouldn’t need surgery if you follow our and your therapist’s instructions. We will give you some initial pain medications and we’ll set you up with an appointment with a Physical Therapist at St. Mary’s who will call you with your appointment times. Meanwhile, take the pain medicine we’ll give you at the prescribed times. If the knee starts swelling, apply ice packs. I’m going to leave the splint off but will wrap your knee for support. I will give you a pair of crutches to get around on while you are healing. Do you have any questions?”
“No, ,,she looked at the name on his coveralls, Ted.”
“Okay then. I’ll wrap your knee , give you your medicines, and we’ll take you back home in the ambulance.”
“OH NO! I can’t afford that! My insurance won’t pay for that!.
“Mrs. Corson, it’s Christmas. Do you think I’d make you pay for a ride in my magic medical sleigh? Let’s get you fixed up and get you on the road to recovery for a new year.”
“When they got back, Dr. Gaddy was still at the clinic, waiting for them.
“Ted your ‘bedside manner’ was impeccable. You immediately removed her anxiety by your simple act. I know, the charity is paying for the ambulance rides, but the way you explained it brought her tensions down immediately. Thank you.”
“Doin’ my job Doc. We’ve got to get going. We’ve a dinner to finish cooking.”
Ted and Carla got back to the house and checked the food.
“Well, the green bean casserole hadn’t had time to start bubbling and the potatoes weren’t done yet…what about the roast?” Carla asked.
“Of all the luck! Turning off the stove let it cook just right!” Let’s get the carrots and potatoes going and we’ll have a meal!”
“When do you have to be back in Golden?” Pat asked.
“Classes start on the 4th of January.” Becky said, wrapping around his left arm and laying her head against his shoulder.
Becky suddenly stopped, released his arm and moved in front of Pat.
“What are you feeling right now?”
Pat took a deep breath. “Sadness…I don’t want you to go, Joy…That I’ve finally found a woman I could share my life with, Fear…terrified that I might lose you somehow, Pride…because you are, by far, the most intelligent woman I have ever known…Becky, I could go on and on. I have a plethora of emotions. But my feelings are inconsequential. What is most important is you go out there and realize your goals and dreams.”
Becky stood there and looked at him. “Yeah, I have my goals and dreams, and I have the innate ability to achieve my goals, but as for the dreams….I’m going to need your help on that. You see, you are now part of my dreams. You don’t have to feel sad. You are always in my heart. You don’t have to feel fear that you’ll lose me… because I’m never letting you go. You are a part of my life for as long as you’ll have me. When I’m not here with you, I’m going to be 198 miles, 768 feet… give or take 30 feet…away from you, wishing I was in your arms. I’ve made my decision. I’m going to graduate with a chemical engineering degree and come back and work for Bryan. I’m coming back to YOU!”
Pat scooped her up in his arms and buried his face in her hair.
“I love you Becky!”
“I love you too, Pat!”
“Amy, have a seat. There’s an advertising agency that would like to use your art. They will pay you for it and you’ll get a lot of exposure in the art world. Is this something you’d like to do?
“Momma, I like to draw and paint, it’s fun, but I don’t need the money.”
“Well, if you decide to do it you could always give the money to a charity to help people.”
Amy sat there, thinking. “What would I have to do?”
“Well, you know the advertisements you see in magazines where the people are painted or drawn? Things like that. They would give you a subject and you would draw or paint a picture.”
“Listen Amy, you only do this if you want to. If it interferes with your school work, you’ll have to stop. If it becomes too much for you in any way, you’ll have to stop. If you just don’t want to do it any more, you can stop at any time.”
“Momma? Can I give my money to the Hope Center? There are nice women there and Alice and Judy came from there.”
“Siobhan smiled. “Yes Honey, you can.”

Cal put on his coat and hat and walked out on the porch. The air had that fresh smell you get after a snow and the air was quiet except…..he cocked his head and …that sounded like the dust collector in the shop He buttoned up his coat and headed that way. When he opened the door, he saw Darryl over at the drill press drilling holes in a block of wood. Darryl looked up, saw Cal, and reached up and cut the power to the drill press and the collector.
"What's up Cal?"
"We missed you Christmas Eve." I figured you'd like to be with people this time of year. It must have been lonely."
"Hell Cal, Just because I'm alone, doesn't mean I'm lonely. I like people, but I don't have the need to surround myself with them all the time."
Cal nodded in understanding. "What are you making?"
"It's a painting chest. Becky asked me to make it for Amy. The box itself will be made of Walnut. I 'm making the paint tube holders now out of pine. I'll drill this block out using a large mortise bit, bandsaw it in half, and hit it with sandpaper. It'll get dyed India black and glued inside of the first two drawers. Each drawer will hold 27 tubes of paint. The third drawer will hold brushes. I'll notch out a brush holder inset for it too."
"This is going to be heavy after it's complete and filled with paints."
Darryl smiled. "Not if you consider it will be on custom, roll-around cart with a cabinet base, also in Walnut."
"What if she decides to paint in watercolors?"
Darryl rubbed his chin. "Hmmmm…Birch. Yes Birch. Nice light color. I'll make her the same setup in Birch."
Cal grinned and shook his head. "How long have you been working on this?"
"A couple of days. The dovetails take the longest to do. There's a jig here, but I like my joints a little smaller than the jig produces. I'll get a jig that I like later."
"Write down the information on what you want and give it to the Acquisitions people. I'll leave you to your work."
Cal walked over to the outdoor furnace that heated the equipment hangar and added more wood. He checked around the greenhouses and went back to the house.
As he was hanging up his coat and hat, he heard Siobhan and Becky talking in the kitchen.
"Nice touch on the painting chest, Becky."
"I saw a picture of one online and thought it would be handy for her to have. Darryl likes to build things and help people so I talked him into making it."
Cal turned to Siobhan. "You've taught her well how to use her womanly guile to manipulate men, with finesse, I might add." "Oh Daddy, you're too old fashioned. I like to refer to it as 'charm'."
"Whatever. When are you headed back? I can have Jon check out your Tahoe before you go."
"I'll leave here on the 3rd. My classes resume on the 4th."
"Okay, I'll have him check it out."
"I want to come home more often. My last class on Friday ends at 3:00 and I can be here by 8:00."
Siobhan looked quickly at Cal. "Becky, that's such a long drive on I-70 for the beginning of the weekend. Traffic will be horrible!"
Cal sat there and listened to the two banter back and forth.
"May I make a suggestion?" Cal asked.
"Centennial has the closest FBOs to the school and is only about 25 miles. Why don't I check with the FBOs and try to arrange for tie-down space. You can keep the plane up there and be home in two hours versus five."
"I'd feel better with you flying than you driving through the mountains with those weekend nuts."
Becky had a big grin on her face. "When can I get the plane up there?
"I'll know when I can get space fly the plane up there."
"Is there any way you could bring Pat with you when you come?"
"Oh! So you can fly off with him and leave me stranded. The plane only has two seats."
"But can't you ge…"
Cal grinned. "I'll have one of the guys fly up and pick me up."
"Cal, don't tease her." Siobhan said.
Becky got up and hugged Cal. "Thank You Daddy."
"We'll be gone most of the day tomorrow for our spa treatment."
"Okay. Where's Bill? I haven't seen him all day."
"He and Gabby went into Grand Junction."
"Since you're going into town tomorrow, why don't you put in an order for the acrylic paints and brushers and pick them up while you're there. Darryl will have that chest done pretty quick"
"Cal, Dave and I have Elk tags we're going to either use or lose. Be okay if we borrowed the S-70 to fly us up near the Arkansas Valley for a couple of days? We want to be back for the party."
"Sure, Andy. Is Ken going to fly you?"
"Yeah."
"Well, good hunting!"
"I can't believe you guys! I bring dozens of parties up here all the time and not one has bagged two in an afternoon! Let's get these strung up and quartered out. You want the hides whole?"
Dave looked at Andy. "Yeah, a friend of ours knows how to brain tan. Can we get the brains too?"
Sure, I’ll have to split the skull with a hatched, but I’ll get them. It’s funny, for some reason I threw in two sets of game bags in my pack this morning. Hey, those antlers aren’t going to fit in the helicopter.”
“You can keep them."
The men quickly removed the hides and quartered the carcass. There was a little more meat they cut off but they left the rest for the wolves. They dropped Archi off at his cabin and headed home.
Just as they crossed the Sawatch Range near Lenado, a light on the panel begin flashing.

"What the hell is that?" An excited Dave asked.
"Chip warning light. I hope it's just a bad sensor. I need to set it down. We're 5 miles from Pitkin County Airport so we probably won't blow up before we get there."
"Don't say sh*t like that!" Dave growled.
Ken grinned.
They landed at the airport and inquired about a helicopter mechanic. The man at the FBO called out to one of his co-workers..
"That guy down near Hangar 3 still around?"
"Yeah, I saw him working on a Bell 206 this morning."
"Hey, check down at Hangar 3. He might be able to help you."
"Thanks."
"You two can wait here." Ken said. "I'll go talk to this guy."
Ken walked into the hangar and saw a guy kneeling before an open access panel on a Bell 206.
"Excuse me."
The guy stood up and turned around. "Yeah, can I help you?" "Can you work on Sikorsky S-70s?"
"Been known to…at least the military version."
I got a chip light 5 miles out. Is there a chance you could take a look?"
"Yeah, I'll take a look at it for you."
Ken stuck out his hand. "Ken Nelson."
Craig accepted it. "Craig Jenson."
The got to the helicopter and Craig told Ken to power it up. The light flashed. Craig opened a little access panel and pulled out a cellphone-sized device from his coveralls and attached a connector wire to it.
"Power it down."
Ken turned off the master switch and Craig plugged in the connector cable somewhere in the recess.
"Power up."
Ken turned the master switch off. Craig punched a few buttons, waited, and punched a couple more. He disconnected the cable.
"Power down."
"Power up."
Ken turned the master switch on. The light didn't flash.
Ken breathed a sigh of relief. "What do I owe you?"
Craig waved him off. "A-h-h-h… by the time I ran your card, you could be in BumF**cked, Egypt…and I didn't even get my knees dirty. Just curious, but where did you get an S-70?"
Ken grinned. "I couldn't tell you even if you kissed me."
"Oh, one of those secret squirrel deals, hunh?"
Ken grinned. "I can neither confirm nor deny."
"Well, I don't work for the government anymore."
"Wasn't offering you a job."
"You don't need a helicopter mechanic?
"We could use one, maybe."
"Well, make up your mind. As soon as I patch up that two-oh-six, I'm pulling pitch."
"What are you qualified in.?"
"UH-1s, Ch-47, MD500, Uh and MH-60s, Sikorsky, Bell, McDonnell Douglas, Hughes, and been known to use baling wire and 100 mph tape on a few Eurocopters. I'm a Fu**in' Air Gypsy with MD600 bought from a hospital bankruptcy. I fly around, make some money, take another cert course. Problem is, I've just about run out of courses and have just about decided to find a permanent location to hang up my ruck."
Ken reached into a console pocket and pulled out one of his business cards. Turning it over, he wrote down the geo coordinates and the tower frequency."
"If you get bored, drop in for a cup of coffee. Make sure to call the tower before approach or the welcoming committee could be less than hospitable."
Craig gave Ken one of his cards.
"Yeah, yeah, I might just do that."
They shook hands. "Volare Optimos," Craig said. "De Oppresso Liber." Replied Ken.
Ken turned on the master switch and warmed up the turbines. He handed Andy the card Craig had given him.
"I'd check him out. Could be a diamond in the rough."
The four blades started turning and when the bird was ready, Ken ground taxied to the runway, all the while talking to the tower. When he got his clearance, he lifted the bird and headed north over the runway, gaining altitude. He stayed on course until they reached Woody Creek and banked left. Ken set the GPS for a direct flight to the Ranch, which took him directly over St; Benedict's Monastery, south of Snowmass,

Ken hit the rotor brake to stop the blades quicker. Once they stopped, they got out of the helicopter and stretched.
"I'll get my truck and we can carry the meat down to the Processing House and put it into the cooler until tomorrow."
Andy knocked on the doorjamb of Akira's workshop.
"Akira, may I talk with you?"
Akira took off the jewelers loupe magnifying eye glasses. "Sure Andy."
Andy pulled a small box out of his pocket. "Akira, I need you to design some type of jewelry to conceal this. This is a transponder. In its current form, it is detectable out to 200 miles by a local receiver or worldwide by satellite. The battery has to be changed once a year. I know the range will decrease with metal around it. What I need to know Is how much. Make it look attractive, but not expensive."
"I will work on this."
"Thank you Akira."
"Cal?"
"Hm."
That land on the other side of the lake, what are you planning to do with it?"
Cal looked up from his book. "Well, I had planned to use it for pastures, but with building the other cattle tanks, I really don't need to use it for that."
Siobhan was quiet, just looking through a magazine. Cal knew better, but he sat his book down.
"Why do you ask?"
Siobhan turned a page. "That area is what…around ten acres?"
'Yeah, roughly that."
Siobhan turned another couple of pages.
Cal shook his head and sighed.
"Why do you ask?"
"I was thinking…."
Cal shook his eyes and slowly shook his head. She's about to set the hook…"
"I was thinking. What if we divided that ten acres into two, five acre plots and built homes for Bill and Becky as sort of 'home bases.', somewhere they could come home to."
He decided to play with her.
"Siobhan, they already have rooms here."
Siobhan closed her magazine and sat up straight.
Uh-oh, DUCK!
"Cal! Be sensible! They have significant others and like their privacy!"
...and the Hindenburg started burning…. "I'll call Sam after the New Year."
The girls had come back from their spa day more beautiful than ever. All had bought new outfits for the New Year's Party, which was a huge success. To keep the women from having to work so much, Cal had the party catered. Becky and Pat had the honor of ringing the bell on the patio of the Community Center at the strike of twelve. A new year sprang forth like morning brightness and the old one slowly melted away like a shadow at dusk.

"Andy? Mike. I've got a helicopter holding about two miles out. Say's here to see you."
"Let him land, I'm on my way."
Andy arrived while the blades were slowing. Nice looking helicopter. He noticed there wasn't a tail rotor.
Craig stepped out of the MD600 and approached and held out his hand.
"Looks like you have a pretty nice place here." Craig grinned, shaking Andy's hand.
"It's a struggle, but we try." Andy grinned. "Come one, It'll take you to lunch."
Andy called Cal on the way to Casey's and asked him for a meet at Casey's. When Cal arrived Andy introduced him to Craig.
"Well Craig, tell me your story." Cal said.
"Well, I went into the Army at eighteen, they told me I had a superior mechanical aptitude, selected aviation mechanics school and went to helicopters. I guess my performance reports reached someone in Special Operations Command because I ended up with the 160th. I worked on every type of rotary-wing bird they had and was going to get certification on the CV-22, when the officers turned everything to 'Cover-My-Ass' politics. I no longer wanted to fix the aircraft to take our troops back into no-win situations with their hands tied. I got out, sold my parents farm which had lain fallow for years and bought a helicopter. Since then, I fly until I find a job, make some money, take certification training for some other helicopter…and now I'm kind of weary. I'm looking to keep to one place.
"To have done all that you seem fairly young." Cal said, studying the facial expressions.
"I'm 28 going on a 100." Craig said. "What's good here?"
"I haven't had anything here that isn't good." Replied Andy.
They ordered their food and relaxed in casual conversation. When the food came, the idle talk shut down to a minimum. You could tell Craig was enjoying the meal. When he finished eating, he filled his glass from the pitcher of water and drank half of it down.
He laid his silverware on his plate and set it aside.
"Now I've been to many places, many of them tourist destinations because the money is good... with highly related restaurants, but I don't remember eating anything that good." People fall for expensive and flashy things because they think they are better, but this place goes to show that looks are deceiving."
Craig looked around. "I mean, this… this is a nice, homey restaurant. It's easy on the eyes, the décor let's you feel like you're welcome. It gives you the feeling that Grandma's back in the kitchen cooking your food. Then, you taste the food, you find out it's all that and even more."
"You think you can pass the A&P/IA test?" Cal asked.
"If I can't, I'll cut my own throat." Craig grinned.
Cal grinned. "I'm beginning to believe modesty isn't your forte."
Craig's face turned serious. "Cal, what I am is confident. When I open an inspection panel, somebody's life is in my hands. The least little thing I do wrong could cause an innocent death. I have to be exact and confident that when that pilot and his passengers step in that aircraft, I've done everything I could possibly do to ensure that aircraft will make it safely back to Mother Earth."
Cal laid his fork on his plate. "I'll pay you $82,000 a year to start. I've got two or three neighbors with rotary wing aircraft that may occasionally need your services. I hope you will consider charging them a little less than the FBO in Grand Junction. You pocket anything you make on those aircraft. Are you certified for fixed wing?"
Craig grinned. "I'm certified to both fix and fly single and multi-engine."
"We'll renegotiate your salary in 6 months." Cal held his hand out. "You've found a place to 'hang your rucksack', if you want."
Craig grinned and took Cal's hand. "I'll take it."
Andy, take him to the bunkhouse for now. I'll work on more permanent quarters later."
They all got up from the table, Craig reaching for his wallet.
"I've got this." Cal said.
Andy drove Craig back up to the airfield to get his gear. Craig opened the rear doors and pulled out two rolling duffel bags and tie-downs for the rotor blades. After securing the blades, Andy and Craig pulled the duffels over to Andy's truck and placed them in the back.
When they arrived at the bunkhouse, Andy helped him carry his gear into one of the rooms.
"Whoa! Holiday Inn Express!" Craig chuckled.
"Welcome to your temporary home!" Andy grinned. "There's food in the freezer and fridge and I don't know what else. Come with me and I'll get you a vehicle to use."
They went to the equipment hangar and Andy took a set of keys off the wall to a GMC pickup. There's a General Store next to Casey's restaurant that'll have pretty much anything you want.. Is that all your gear in those two bags?"
"Ah yes. The vestige of a previous life….'pack light and sleep cold at night'." Craig grinned.
"I heard that!" Grinned Andy.
"Well, pull the truck on out and let me close the door. I gave Cal your number, so he may call you later."
As the truck cleared the door, Andy lowered it.

Cal walked into the house and unbuttoned his coat. He glanced over to the fireplace and walked over. Taking the poker, he rotated the burning log and threw another one on.
"Oh! I thought I heard someone in here." Siobhan said as she walked from the bedroom area.
"I hired a new aircraft mechanic this morning."
"Why? What happened to Arny?"
"Nothing happened to Arny. He's kind of on loan to us from Homeland Security. They could pull him at any time, leaving us in a lurch. Did Jon bring Becky's Tahoe back?"
"Yes, she's getting her things packed now."
"Bill called, He's safely back at the Academy."
"Good."
Cal smelled the coffee and went in to get a cup. He sat there and watched setting out some of the ingredients for dinner.
"What are we having for dinner?"
"Your favorite; Saucy Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn and yeast rolls."
"Got enough room for another plate?"
"Of course…the new mechanic?"
"Yeah."
"Craig? Cal. Come up to the house for dinner this evening about 6:00. Yeh, just come out of the bunkhouse and look to your left front for the big house. Okay, see you at 6:00."
"Jesus! Big House! I sound like a plantation owner!"
"Well, people who know you don't think of you as the plantation owner, those that don't know you don't count." Siobhan grinned.
Becky came in carrying her purse and computer bag. "Well, I'm off!"
"Okay, Baby Girl, I'll give you a call when I firm up the tie-down."
"Okay, Daddy. Thank you so much!" She hugged him and kissed Cal on the cheek.
"I'm not going to ask you if you have everything, so be careful and drive safely." Siobhan said.
They walked her out to her vehicle and watched as she put her purse and bag on the passenger seat and buckled up. She cranked the Tahoe, waved and drove off.
"Thank God!" Cal said.
"What?" Siobhan asked.
"At least you're not bawling like a calf."
"Oh hush! She grew up…."
"You hadn't noticed that before?"
"Yes, but…time flew by so quickly. It seems like last week that we were standing in the courtroom hugging them for dear life."
"Yeah…"
Cal drove over the lake dam to the other side and parked. He got out and walked around, studying the area. He'd hire a surveyor to come out and officially document it. He turned and looked out over the lake. I would be a nice view from a porch. Walking back to his truck, he was thinking it would be best to let Siobhan pick the house designs. She was going to anyway.
"Come on in Craig, Let me have your coat."
Cal hung the coat up and led him into the Great Room. Siobhan came in from the kitchen.
"Craig, this is my wife, Siobhan. Siobhan, Craig Jensen,"
"I'm pleased to meet you Siobhan. You have a beautiful home."
"Thank you Craig. Can I get you something to drink?"
"No, I'm fine, thank you."
"Have a seat Craig." Cal said, waiving to a chair.
"I've got to move some things around, but I think we can find room to hangar you 600."
"Where are you from originally, Craig?"
Craig hesitated. "I grew up on a 3,000 acre farm and ranch in Nebraska until my I was 18,"
"I see, so, is that where you got your mechanical aptitude from?"
"I guess. I was good at fixing the machinery. When I took the tests in the Reception Station, I just put down what I thought was logical. You see, once I have a brief knowledge how something is supposed to work, everything falls into place. I soak up knowledge like a sponge, and more important, it isn't boring to me."
"That's good. You have any hobbies?"
"I like to shoot. I have a colt, M4 style carbine and a Kimber .45."
"Well, we have an excellent range here on the Ranch. Feel free to use it any time."
Siobhan got the kids seated before calling the men into the dining room.
Siobhan served the kids while Cal and Craig served themselves. Craig was quiet. He put down his fork and wiped his mouth with the napkin.
"I lied. I thought the meal I had in the restaurant was better than anything I had ever eaten, but this has it beat hands down!"
"Why thank you Craig!" Siobhan said.
Craig went on to have another serving of the meatloaf and a spoon of mashed potatoes.

Siobhan sat down with Sam and went over the changes in the house plans. Shay and Dennis did some initial grade work and moved the excavator over in preparation for digging the basements.
Chief Hartman wanted to start an intelligence section in the Police Department and had asked Andy for some help. Andy sent his man… Pat... to talk to the Chief. They had a very successful meeting and scheduled training, to be given by Pat, to Dales selected staff.
Pat felt good. It felt good to work again. He had just crossed the bridge over the Colorado and noticed an elderly lady standing beside a car on the edge of the road. It looked like she had a flat tire. Pat put on his warning flashers and pulled in behind the lady's car.
"Would you like some help Ma'am?"
"Could you please? I don't bend over very well."
Pat had the lady open her trunk and he pulled out the jack assembly and spare tire. He got the jack in place and lifted it slightly, then loosened the lug nuts. After getting the car up enough to put the spare on, he completed removing the nuts and removed the tire and tossed it in the trunk. Rolling the spare over he worked the tire onto the lug studs. Coming down the highway, a truck driver spilled hot coffee in his lap and swerved, plowing into Pat's vehicle and the lady's car, killing the two instantly.
"Andy, this is Earl Gilmore. Andy, I hate I can't tell you in person but, Pat Goode was killed in an auto accident a little while ago."
Andy sat there stunned. "Uh…Earl…where did they take the body?"
"It's at St. Mary's.
"Earl, I appreciate you were the one who called. I'll talk to you a little later."
Andy sat there, trying to gather his thoughts. He had to personally tell Cal and Siobhan. Becky was going to be devastated.
He got in his truck and drove up to Cal and Siobhan's house. Easing out of his truck he slowly walked up the steps and knocked on the door. Cal opened the door and immediately sensed something wasn't right.
"Andy, what's wrong.?"
"Is Siobhan here?"
"Yes, yes, come in."
Siobhan came from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel.
"What's wrong Andy?"
"Pat Goode was killed in an auto accident a little while ago."
There was a stunned silence. Siobhan's hand went to her face, her eyes misting.
"What happened?" Cal asked.
"I don't know. Earl called to notify me. I'm going in to arrange disposition of the body. I'll stop and pick up a copy of the accident report."
"Notify Grand Valley, get a wooden casket, no vault. The funeral will be here at the chapel, day after tomorrow at 2:00 PM. As soon as we can, Siobhan and I are flying to Centennial to pick up Becky."
"Okay Cal, I'll handle it."
Andy turned and went out.
Cal looked at Siobhan. "Do you know what time Becky gets out of class?"
"Uh…today, she gets out at 4;00."
Cal pulled out his phone. "Matt, I need to borrow the TBM this afternoon.. Okay, Thanks."
"Get ready, we need to go get Becky." Siobhan hurried to change clothes.
Cal rummaged around and found an unopened box of facial tissue and placed it in a plastic grocery bag. Siobhan came back out after talking to Alice and they headed to the airfield.
Arny helped Cal move the plane out of the hangar. Siobhan carried the plastic bag aboard while Cal did his walk-around. When he boarded the plane he looked at Siobhan sitting in the passenger area.
"Do you want to ride up front?"
"No, I'll sit back here. It's more comfortable"
"Okay, while I'm going through the checklist, will you call and arrange for a rental car to be delivered to the FBO?
"Sure."
Cal went through the checklist and started the engine. He taxied out onto the runway and took off. Quickly climbing to 5,000 feet, he leveled off, setting the throttle to have them arrive in thirty minutes.
Once they had landed and taxied to the transient parking area, Cal took his time.
"Why are you so slow?" Siobhan fussed."
"Take it easy, I don't want to get to her condo until after she gets there."
"Oh."
"Listen. You know she's going to be upset. I'm concerned the effect will affect her classes. I'll find out who to talk to, but I'm going to see if she can lay out this semester."
"That might be the wise thing to do."
When they reached the condo, Becky's Tahoe was parked in the drive. They got out and rang the doorbell.
"Momma! Daddy! What are you doing here?"
Then she saw the tears forming in her Mother's eyes.
"Has something happened to Billy?"
"Honey, let's go in and sit down."
"Becky, This morning, Pat was killed in a car accident."
Becky's face went from a mask of horror to screaming anguish in less than a second.
"No-o-o-o-o-o-o!"

Cal held a weeping Becky as Siobhan and Erin packed a bag for Becky. Erin gave Siobhan Becky's counselor's name and number. Siobhan and Erin helped Becky out to the car while Cal loaded Becky's bags and computer in the car. The three drove to Centennial and left the car to be picked up by the rental agency. Becky was quiet, except for an occasional moan. Siobhan was constantly mopping tears off her face.
When they got home, Becky went immediately to bed. Siobhan watched her until Becky dropped off in an emotionally exhausted sleep.
Cal went to answer the knock on the door. It was Andy.
"Cal, the funeral director recommended a closed-casket funeral."
"I understand. Everything arranged?"
"Yes, and a funeral detail, consisting of a bugler, Honor Guard and firing detail, will be here from Fort Carson."
"Fine, thanks."
Cal walked over to the dry bar and poured a generous amount of Irish whiskey into a glass. Turning to the framed Regimental Flag, he raised his glass, then took a drink.
Cal sat down heavily on the couch and slouched forward. Siobhan came in and sat down beside him, resting her head on his shoulder.
Taking the drink from Cal's hand, Siobhan took a drink. "... chuig turas sábháilte." (…to a safe voyage.")
Cal took the glass and took another drink. "Go dtí Valhalla mo chara." (Until Valhalla, my friend.")
The Funeral Detail moved with precision, which nothing less was expected. Cal, Andy, Bill and the rest of the Special Forces veterans all wore their uniforms and berets. Cal had arranged with the Master Sergeant to present the flag to Becky, who could barely hold it. Instead of one bugler, Fort Carson sent two. Even Cal shuddered when the echoed Taps were played. As the grave was smoothed over and the flowers laid down, Becky started to kneel beside the grave. Siobhan stopped her until Cal could lay his uniform coat down for her to kneel on. She stayed there for a few minutes with her head bowed, praying. Finally, she looked up at Cal and held her hand up for him to help her stand. Cal and Siobhan helped her into the car and went to the Community Center."
The Ranch ladies had set up a great reception/wake. There was plenty of food and drinks. Cal overheard the Master Sergeant describing to the two military van drivers, who were at parade rest, the vile things he would do to them if they even sniffed the fumes of alcohol. However, the Honor Guard and firing detail were doing a fine job of upholding the reputation of 10th Special Forces Group.
Siobhan brought Cal a plate of finger sandwiches.
"You better eat some of these. If you get to tippin' and lyin' with the solders, you won't be worth anything."
Cal chuckled and took the plate. He glanced over and saw Craig, with his dress uniform on, squatting and speaking with Becky. Cal nudged Siobhan and chin pointed over at Becky. She saw Becky nod slightly and Craig got up and walked away. Siobhan nudged Cal and they walked over and sat with Becky.
"How are you Sweety?"
"I'm okay Momma."
"What did Craig say to you?"
"He said….he said that I might feel damned by Pat's death, but that Pat and I were very lucky. He said that Pat and I had shared more love in a meteor's burst than most people get in in a lifetime. He said that I wasn't damned….that I was blessed and to look to the future."
Siobhan looked at Cal and raised one eyebrow."
"Well Honey, I think he was correct."
Becky got permission to pick up her work in the next semester. She took long walks and sometimes flew her plane, but she slowly began returning to the living.
One night, after the kids had gone to bed, she came into the Great Room and sat with Cal and Siobhan.
"Daddy, I still would like to have the STOL at Centennial, if I could. I really need to get back here more often now."
"Of course. When you're ready to go back, you and your Mother can fly it up and I'll fly something up to bring your baggage."
Becky went over and crawled onto Cal's lap.
'It's been a long time since I sat in your lap Daddy," she said, her voice muffled by his neck.
Yes it has," sighed Cal.
Cal waited for a while before taking off and still caught up with them before Castle Rock. He slowed down and let her land first. By the time he brought the baggage over from the transient area, Becky had the STOL tied down.
"Don't forget to refuel."
"I'll come down tomorrow and arrange it."
They carried the bags over to the rental car and loaded them. When they got to the condo, Erin gave her a hug and helped bring her things into her room.
"I've got to get to my afternoon class Beck. I'll see you this evening."
"Okay Erin, thanks."
Cal got up and went into the bathroom and closed the door.
"Can I get you anything Momma?" Becky asked.
"No, we should get going, unless you need us to stay."
"No, I'll be fine. I really loved Pat, and it will take some time for me to heal, but I don't think as much time as it would if I had made love to him."
Siobhan nodded.
"Okay Cal let's get going."
"Okay. You need anything Becky?"
