Cal, I can hardly believe what you've done here! It is amazing!" "Well, I've had some good people come into the flock. We've got a tight, loyal community and I let the people feel their way and do jobs they like. Andy with the Facility, Job and Barry with the garage, Dawn with the greenhouses and farming, Johan and Nick with the cattle and horses, Casey with the store and restaurant, Miguel and his cousins with the auto restoration, all are good people looking to make their way. I've just assisted them to be successful." "Cal, you've got a pretty good road system here. I'll take on the job of maintaining it." "Well, now that you mentioned it, last summer I got some satellite photos done of the ranches, specifically looking for wet areas. These were done at a time when there shouldn't have been any. I checked them out, and they were springs. Nick found one and we ended up developing it into a lake. There are a couple of other springs I want to do that to. Think you and Dennis could do that?" "Do you need concrete dams?" "No, not for those." "Then sure. I've done ponds before." "I'll want roads out to them also." "No problem. I need to get a vehicle. Can someone run me into town?" "Just take my pickup, find what you want. The Chevy dealer knows me and will deliver here if you want." "That'll work. I can pick up some groceries while I am there. Let's go back down to the production building." Cal walked into the production building and spotted DeeDee moving things around. Her baby was sitting in a carrier on one of the tables. Cal walked over to the baby and tickled her chin. "Hello Marie!" DeeDee turned around and smiled. "What's up Cal?" "DeeDee, this is Shay Cafrey. He'll be working on the Ranch. I wanted to get him some vegetables fruits, and raid the meat locker." "Sure! Let me get a couple of baskets." They filled up the baskets and put them in the truck. Cal told Shay to go ahead and put them away in his RV and go ahead to town. If he needed anything, to give him a call. Cal walked back up to the house and got the Command Car out and drove back to the Farm Family Housing area. He drove the dirt lane to the houses slowly. He got out and drove some stakes, then turned around and went to the garage where Dennis and Jon were working on the D-8 dozer, replacing some of the hydraulic lines. "Dennis, you got some time to look over a project?" "Sure, we're about finished here." Cal drove back to the housing area. "I want you to do this road up, extending it down along the line of stakes and back to the county road." "Make it like the Ranch roads?" "Yes, and make sure you put in good drainage ditches and of course culverts are required on the county road." "Cal, I was driving by the old Daniels Quarry the other day and noticed a rock separator there by the road. That place has been closed for years. I found out It was Hurley Daniel's brother who had owned it when it was operating. When he died, it was closed down. If we had that separator in that wash at the end of the mesa, we could separate the soil and rock to get the right size stone for a good road." "Let me call Hurley." Cal pulled out his phone and pulled Hurley's number out of his contact list. "Hurley? Cal Coleman. I was told you own the Daniels' Quarry property." "Yeah. It came into my hands when my brother died." "What do you plan to do with that rock separator sitting out there?" "Nothing. That's a manual separator. You dump a load in the top and as it slides down the stone drops into different sized holes. There's newer, more efficient models out there now." "You want to sell it?" "Nope, but if you want it, you can have it. You just have to move it." "I'll take it! We'll start working on how to get it here. Thanks Hurley." Cal grinned at Dennis. "He's giving it to us. All we have to do is move it. That's your job." Dennis grinned. "Easy. I already figured how to dismantle it. Only take a couple of days." "Well, Shay has gone to buy a vehicle. As soon as he's squared away he can help you. Do you need to do any preliminary dirt work before you get it here?" "Not much. I can place it on the shelf and dump a bucket load on the grizzly bars at the top. The big rock we don't need will roll back into the wash."
"Okay then. Your project." Shay pulled over at the lookout and turned off the Tahoe. He gazed around at the terrain. Maybe this was something positive. It had been the first time he had considered getting another vehicle other than the RV to drive. Before he wanted to remain as close to the RV as possible. It held all those memories of Camella. Sometimes he could sense he there and turn around. He sighed. It was time. He would always have her in his heart. He needed to move ahead. Cal watched as the gray Tahoe drove up and stopped. A grinning Shay got out. Clay chuckled. "Nice." "One of the guys at the dealership is dropping the Silverado off this afternoon." "No problem. Dennis is down at the equipment barn getting the equipment ready move a rock sorter." "Okay. I'll head on down there then. Cal, thanks." "Shay, we're family here." Shay walked up to the equipment barn and found Dennis checking the tires on the low boy trailer. "What else needs to be gotten ready?" Shay asked. "This is pretty much it. We need to load the excavator and grab my tool box and we can be on our way. You drive the other low boy. Jon and Barry are going with us so this should go pretty quick. Here, this is your radio and headset. We use them frequently around here. I'll get you a charging base when we get back." Dennis called Jon on the radio and told him they were leaving and they'd see them at the quarry. They were rigging the chains on the rock sorter when Jon and Barry drove up in the service truck.

"What ya got here Dennis?" Dennis climbed down from the sorter and showed Jon the bolts that needed to be taken out. Barry had been unrolling air hoses to power the air wrenches they were going to use. In about 15 minutes they were able to lift the first section of the sorter off and placed it on the trailer. An hour and a half later they had everything loaded and chained down. "We'll meet you back at the wash Jon." "Right behind you Dennis." They all jumped into their trucks and headed back to the Ranch. Shay unloaded the excavator while Dennis unchained the load of sorter parts. Jon and Barry were ready for the assembly as Shay lifted the first piece into place. The assembly went quicker than the disassembly. The sun was just reaching the horizon as the last bolt was tightened. Jon grinned. Well, that went as well as you could ask for." "Better than I thought it would." Barry agreed. "Well, let's get back and get this stuff put away. Hey Shay, come on over for dinner." Shay thought for a second. "Sure, let me get cleaned up and I'll be over. Thirty-five Kerry, right?" "Yep. Diana says we have a treat tonight." Shay drove up to thirty-five Kerry and parked. He walked up to the door and knocked. Jon opened the door. "Come on in Shay. How about a Dos Equis? It'll go good with the food!" "Sounds good. Something does smell good." Jon returned with the beers and they had just taken a swig when Diana called them to dinner. They were just about to sit down when a young woman walked in carrying another bowl of food. Shay flinched and turned white. "Shay, what's wrong?" Jon asked. "Will you excuse me for a minute?" Shay said and walked out on the porch. Jon looked at Diana and Angelina, shrugged, and followed Shay out. "What's going on Shay?" Shay took a deep breath, slowly let it out, then pulled out his wallet. Taking a picture out, he handed it to Jon. "Oh" said Jon as he looked at the picture, then turned and went inside. He walked over to Diana and Angelina and showed them the picture. "Oh my! She could be your twin sister Angelina! Angelina took the picture and gasped. "He has a dark past." Taking the picture, Angelina walked out on the porch to where Shay was leaning against a post. She laid a hand on Shay's arm and handed him the picture. "She must mean a lot to you. I am Angelina Becerra. I cook for Diana and Jon. I am not the beautiful woman in the picture." "Shay turned to her. "I know…I mean, I know you aren't Carmella. I was just startled because for a minute…"
"It's all right. Come. You must be hungry after all the work you did today." Taking him by the arm, she led him back to the table. When everyone was seated, Angelina dished out enchiladas in everyone's plate. Bowls of rice and refried beans followed. "My God! This is delicious!" Diana commented. "Muy sabroso." Shay said. "¡Oh! ¿Dónde aprendiste a hablar español?" Shay blushed. "Language school, on the job in South America…around." Diana looked at Jon and grinned. "So, what are you doing tomorrow Shay?" "Dennis and I are going to start sorting rock for the roadbed down at the Family Housing area. As soon as we have enough, we'll start building their road. Probably start on that next week." "Well Angelina, looks like you'll be getting a new road by your house!" Angelina blushed. "Yes, it will be nice." They finished their meal with Flan. Jon and Shay both groaned they had eaten too much. Diana grinned and shook her head. "You two go sit on the porch while we get rid of the dishes. Shay, I'll fix you a plate to take with you." Jon and Shay went out and sat in the rocking chairs. "I do love Spring around here." Jon said. "Jon, I apologize for earlier." "Nothing to apologize for. I don't know of anyone on this Ranch that hasn't gone through some kind of bad experience. We support each other. That's just the way it is." "Thanks. There are some good people here." "Yep, and it seems it just keeps getting better every day." Angelina walked out on the porch carrying a large pie box, then stood there. Ryan looked up and said, "I best be getting in" and walked inside. Angelina stood there until Shay looked up at her. "I have food for you to take home." "Angelina, I apologize for earlier. You took me by surprise." "Shay, no soy la mujer en la foto. Soy Angelina Becerra, hija de Sylvio y Margarita Becerra". ("Shay, I am not the woman in the picture. I am Angelina Becerra, daughter of Sylvio and Margarita Becerra.")
"Lo sé. Al principio me sorprendió el semejanza, pero eres una mujer propia, similar, pero diferente". ("I know. I was at first shocked at the resemblance, but you are a woman of your own, similar, but different.")Shay got up and took the box from her. "Gracias Angelina. Disfruté esta noche. Buenas noches". ("Thanks Angelina, I enjoyed tonight, good night".)
"Buenas noches, Shay. ¡Hasta luego!" ("Good night Shay. See you later!")

Do you think it is the water? Perhaps the mountain air? We need to find out so we can bottle it. We will make a fortune.

Sylvio knew what he was doing when it came to farming. He looked over the equipment and saw they had what they needed to begin the fields and he and his brother and nephews went to work. They plowed the fields and set up the irrigation systems. Corn, hemp, and oats were planted. Wheat and barley wouldn't be planted until the late fall for winter crops. The last field was planted in clover as a cover crop. Cal sat down with Sylvio and together they put together a list of equipment to be purchased for full plant-to-harvest operations. Cal was pleased with the way things were moving along. He drove the Command Car over to the Family Housing area and checked on the road. When Cal parked he sat for a minute watching Dennis following the water tanker with the roller compactor. The water tanker did the loop and came back around and pulled up next to Cal. Shay got out and walked over to Cal.
"Just about done, Cal"
"Looks good. I need to come up with a street name. I'll think of something."
"What about Colina Drive?"
"Yeah, that'll work. By the way, I got those satellite photos in. I've got a couple of places picked out. Monday, I want you, me, and Dennis to ride out and check them out."
"Sounds good. Well, I'm going to do a final inspection. Other than that, we're done."
"Okay Shay, I'll see you later."
Cal stopped by Miguel's Restoration shop on his way back to the Ranch.
"Hey Cal! I'm glad you stopped by. I really appreciate the jobs you've given my family."
Cal grinned. "I didn't give anything. They're working for their jobs."
"Yeah, but they are in a much better situation than they were in California. Sophia is working for Casey in the restaurant, Angelina is working for Diana as a housekeeper and cook, Margarita and Merced are working with Dawn. Everyone is much happier than I've seen them in a long time. We all owe you Cal." "Well, I enjoy watching work at jobs they like to do. As long as everyone's happy, then I'm happy. The reason I stopped by was to see if you could make a couple of street signs for the new road."
"Sure, no problem. What name do you want on them?"
"Colina Drive. Oh, and Joshua has refurbed a couple of nice signposts he pulled from some scrap iron piles."
"Perfect. We'll get right on it."
"Thanks Miguel. Just let me know the costs." There was a large turn-out at the community dinner Sunday. Jonah, Joshua, and Ben had stayed up most of the night cooking a pig. The women made sides compatible with the entrée. Cal has little to do so he spent most of his time talking with the men on the patio. After getting a cup of iced tea, Shay joined Cal and the men.
"Are we still going out in the morning to check those springs out?" Shay asked.
"Yeah, We'll grab some tools and take a UV34. Dennis is meeting us at the equipment hangar at 9:00."
Sylvio joined Cal and Shay. "Sylvio, I don't think you've met Shay. Shay, this is Sylvio Becerra."
Sylvio shook Shay's hand. "Ah, yes!. I saw you working on the road, and if I'm not mistaken, you've made quite an impression on my daughter. Ella dice que hablas español."
"Ah…Sí, trato de mantenerme en práctica."
Sylvio chuckled. "Quizás necesites un diccionario de pelo largo."
Cal laughed and Shay blushed.
Margarita and Angelina came out, carrying trays of tortillas to warm on the grill. Angelina looked up at Shay and blushed. "Hello Shay."
"Hello Angelina. You look lovely today."
Sylvio looked at Cal, eyebrows going up.
Once the food was ready, Reverend Lambry said grace and people started wandering over and getting plates. Shay, not ready to eat yet, walked over to the back of the patio and leaned on the wall, looking over the garden.
"Aren't you going to eat?"
Shay turned around and saw Angelina.
"Not yet. I thought I'd let the crowd die down a little."
"Have to been down in the garden?"
"No, I was just looking at it."
"Come."
Shay walked with Angelina through the gate and let her guide him."
"This is a tranquil and beautiful place." Angelina said.
"Yes it is. I didn't realize it was here."
They took a seat on the bench next to the stream, listening to the water flowing around and over the rocks.
"What are you thinking of?" Angelina asked softly.
"I'm trying not to think. My thoughts keep going to you. I'm not sure whether it's because of your resemblance to my late wife, or something else."
Angelina smiled. "Well, my thoughts lately have been of you. I'd like to know more about you."
Shay looked at Angelina. "Yes, I'd like to know more about you also."
Angelina stood and took Shay's arm. "Come, let's get something to eat."
As they walked back into the Community Center, several sets of eyes watched them. Margarita nudged Siobhan and smiled.
"Siobhan, did I mention I am looking forward to my future grandchildren?"
Siobhan smiled. "I see the possibility."

Cal loaded the surveyor's transit onto the UV34. Dennis and Shay added a pick and shovel, a bundle of stakes and a sledge hammer. Cal got into the front passenger seat. "Dennis, you drive." "Where are we headed?" "Cal mounted the GPS into its holder and turned it on." "Follow the GPS. You'll have to pick your way in some areas. I've got both locations marked as waypoints." When they got to the first location, they did find a seep on the edge of a small wash. Dennis took the shovel and dug around it. Soon, a trickle of water was flowing. "I think if we brought in a backhoe, I could get this flowing a little more. We're getting a little over a gallon a minute now." Cal nodded, then turned and looked at the terrain. "I'll set up the transit. We'll use this point as the back end of the tank. I want this thing to be at least ten to twelve feet deep. Dennis, once I get the transit level, I'll need you to take the rod and let's check the depth of the wash. Then you can get back on the bank and we'll keep checking until we can get the depth we want. Shay, you can start pounding in stakes." By the time they had finished measuring and putting in stakes in, they had an area thirty yards wide by sixty yards long. "Is the soil going to hold the water?" Shay asked. Cal finished folding the transit tripod up. "No, I'll get pond liners. Once the liner is in place, we'll use the trencher to put a trench around and put the liner in to anchor it. Let's go check out the other site." The other site was even better. The water flow was almost four gallons a minute. They ended up with a tank one hundred yards long by sixty-five yards wide.
Before they left, Call stood there and visualize what it would look like. "When we get back, I'll order the drainage pipe and liner. You guys can start moving what equipment you initially need." Matt's phone rang.` "Hey cowboy! Want to take me on a picnic tomorrow?" "Andrea, I'd love to. Where are we going?" "Just down to the lake. Pick me up at 11:00." Matt stopped this truck at Andrea's cabin and she came out with a picnic basket and a blanket. Matt took them and place both in the back of the truck. Matt grinned. "What brought this on?" "We almost always date at night. It's lovely weather so I thought it would be nice to lay out by the lake." "Sounds good to me." They ate their lunch in the shade of the cottonwoods and talked about what had gone on during the week. When they finished eating, Matt laid the blanket out on the buffalo grass and they stretched out on their backs, looking at the clouds. "Matt, what do you want from a wife?" "I want her to treat me as if I'm the man she'll love for the rest of your life. I want her to let me treat her like she's the woman I plan to love for every day and night for the rest of my life. I want her to communicate with me. When I do something she likes, tell me, show me. When I screw up, tell me, work with me to improve." "Tell me things you like and things you don't." "Ok. I don't like redheads who wear red. I love teal and dark greens. I love thigh high stockings and don't want her to wear pantyhose. I like lots of different kinds of music, but most hip-hop and rap make me want to puke. I love overalls, Levis, denim skirts and western clothes. I like driving fast, singing along with the radio or CD's, and the look of a woman who shows her desire for me." Andrea smiled. "I'd have to practice that. I haven't met anyone I desired until now." "What about foods?" Andrea asked. Matt felt like she was somehow taking notes. "I spent years living in many places, but I like many different foods. I like Chinese food but I'm picky. Most Cantonese foods I don't like. Hunan, Szechuan, and Mandarin I like a lot. Cajun food I love. Ocean fish, but not fish like trout, too many tiny bones. Mexican, Tex-Mex and Italian I love. If I never have sushi again it will be okay with me. In the summer I love bar-b-que, Cole slaw and potato salad. I love cooking for people. In the winter, I love making stews, soups, and chili." "What do you like to do for fun?" "Other than being with you, I like riding horses, 4 wheelers, being near water, travel, flying, and boating." They lay in silence for a few minutes until Matt spoke. "What do you want from a husband?" "I want to know every day that he loves me. I want to feel taken care of. If something needs fixing it says I love you when he fixes it. I'd like phone calls just to say he was thinking about me. I'd love presents for no reason except saying he love me. I want long talks about everything." "Tell me the things you like and don't like." "I hate it when a man wears a shirt and tie the same color. I like it when a man looks comfortable in jeans and boots. I hate pantyhose! I don't like nylon socks on a man. I don't like any part of a man pierced or tattooed. I like bluegrass and country music, soft jazz, and ballads. I don't like loser songs or hip-hop. I want PDAs. Every time I see couples in public showing affection it makes me tingle." "It felt incredibly good when you hooked my arm the first day we went to the garden." Matt said. "What about food?" "I'm not as experienced as you are about foods. I like Chinese, Mexican, and Italian foods, probably would like some things I've never tried. I like bar-b-que but I limit how much of it I'll eat. I've never had sushi nor like trout, but I love salmon and cod. I love soups, stews, and crock pot meals in the winter. "Hmmm…seems we just might be compatible?" Andrea rolled over and put her head on Matt's chest. Andrea sighed. "Matt, I've fallen in love with you." Matt pulled her closer with his right arm." "I have loved you forever" Matt said. "I didn't see anything to indicate that the first time we met," Andrea said. "True, but I know I loved you. I've always loved you. I can't conceive of a world in which I didn't love you. I loved you when I was a teenager. I just hadn't met you yet." Andrea rose up on her left elbow and softly kissed Matt. "We'd better go back. I'm not ready for everyone to witness what I want to do right now."

Shay found Brian and Cal in the shelter utility room discussing some improvements. He waited until they turned and saw him. "Brian, when you have a free minute, I'd like to talk to you." "Sure, I can talk now." Cal turned and started to leave. "We'll talk later Brian." "No. Cal, you can stay. Brian, I'd like to ask Andrea to marry me." "Shay, she's grown and her own woman, but I'd be proud to call you brother-in-law. You two have my blessing." "Thanks Brian" Shay said and shook his hand. Then he turned to Cal. "Cal, I've added a security update to your underground parking garage. When you get the time, I can show it to you." Cal looked at Brian. "I think we're through here." Brian nodded. Shay led Cal to the garage. Brian followed. "Cal I noticed it is a blind exit coming out of the garage to the outside. Jerry and I added camera coverage to the outside and place a monitor in here so you can check before you go out. We've tied it into the RanchNet security system and can be monitored from the Monitoring station." "Looks good Shay. That's been in the back of my mind. Good eye." "Cal, I also noticed That you have radios and net messages for a recall to the shelter in the event of an emergency. I know where we can get a siren system that can be mounted on a tower. It could be heard for a long ways." Cal thought for a second. "We've got a dismounted seventy foot tower stored behind the equipment hangar we can use. Go ahead and get the siren. By the way, have you got a ring yet?" "Not yet. I went to the jewelers and looked at some. I took some pictures. If you don't mind, I'd like to have Siobhan look at them and get her opinion." "Yeah, it's good to get a woman's opinion on something like that. She was with Belinda in the shelter the last time I heard from her. Give her a call on the radio." "Thanks Cal. I'll see you two later." Cal and Brian watched Shay walk away. Brian grinned. "He's almost as nervous as I was when I asked Sinead to marry me." Shay found Siobhan and Belinda checking rooms in the shelter. "Siobhan, can I talk with you for a moment?" Siobhan turned. "Of course. What's up?" Shay blushed. "I want to ask Andrea to marry me…and I'm having a hard time picking out a ring. Could you look at some pictures and maybe help me out?"
Siobhan grinned. "Of course I will.!" Shay handed her his phone and watched as Siobhan scrolled through the pictures. "This one! This ring is beautiful!" Shay looked at the picture then deleted the rest of the ring pictures. "Thanks Siobhan. Andrea is making dinner for us Friday night and I wanted to ask her then." "Do you have her ring size?" "Yep. I'll go in in the morning to pick it up and get it sized. Please don't say anything." Siobhan gave him a hug. "Our secret." Siobhan and Belinda watched as Shay walked away. Belinda sighed. "This place is magic." "Cal, Starlight will be landing at the airfield in thirty minutes." Cal frowned. "Starlight" was the codename for Vicky Hudson, U.S. Marshal. "Roger, meet me there." Cal drove to the airfield, arriving just before Andy. In a few minutes, they watched as a Gulfstream G-5 started its approach. The plane landed and taxied over to the parking area. When the engines shut down the airstairs were lowered. A man appeared in the doorway and waved them aboard. Cal and Andy entered and were escorted to a conference area in the rear of aircraft. "Cal, good to see you again." "Hello Vicky. You remember Andy?" "Yes of course, How are you?" "I am assuming you are the bearer of bad news?" Vicky chuckled. "Not at all. Do you need a good man?" "No, I'm more into women." Vicky laughed. "I asked for that. Seriously, I'm trying to place a man that needs to disappear. He was an National Guard MP Sergeant in Iraq when he stumbled onto a black market weapons scheme that went all the way up to the facility Commanding Officer. A lot of people went to prison over this, including militia members here in the U.S. He's been discharged from the service with 100% disability so he can get a pension, name and SSN changed, and looking at his record, would be a great addition to your motley crew." Cal looked at Andy, who shrugged. "We can find him a place." "His name now is Logan Allen. Here is his folder. We can have him here tomorrow, if that's okay." "Okay Vicky, I'll trust you on this." "Believe me Cal, I wish we had a hundred thousand guys like him." "Okay, send him. We'll see how he works out." They stood by the hanger to watch the G-5 take off. "You know Cal, I've been a little concerned about the store and restaurant. I know Casey can take care of herself, but it might be good if we had someone more imposing hanging around down there to keep an eye on things." Cal looked down at the ground for a few seconds, then back up at Andy. "That's not a bad idea. When he comes in, you meet him. I'm taking Siobhan to Denver in the morning. Put Logan in the bunkhouse and get him credentialed. Check him out on the range and get him armed and licensed. Tell him to be at the Community Center Sunday to get acquainted with everyone. I'll have a full sit-down with him on Monday." "Will do."

Cal flew Siobhan and the kids to Denver to get clothes for them. Cal couldn't understand why they couldn't go in the Grand Junction, but he kept his mouth shut. He just did what she asked. The kids were outgrowing their clothes. Siobhan got them a large range of clothes, shoes, and for those that wanted them, boots. The kids slept in the plane on the way back. When everything was put away, Cal pulled out the three pork shoulders he had thawing and prepared the rub for them. He would put them in the smoker later tonight to slow cook until the morning. Siobhan made Cole slaw and cucumber salad to go with the pork. After dinner that night, Cal went down to the Gathering House and prepared the smoker He was filling up the bin with wood chips when he heard the door open. "You must be Cal." "That's me. Are you Logan?" "The same. What are you doing?" "I'm smoking pork shoulders for tomorrow. Just preparing the smoker." "That's a nice smoker. You build it?" "Well, one of the guys here did. I don't have to do anything once the door is closed. I plug a temperature probe in and everything shuts down when the desired temperature is reached. If the box temperature falls below two hundred twenty-five degrees, the auger puts more chips into the fire. It works." "Nice. You need any help?" "Nah, I got it. It's good to have you here. I'll sit down with you Monday and go over your duties and responsibilities. You just rest up and enjoy the weekend. If you like, we hold services at the church in the morning and gather at the Community Center at 1300 to share food. As a matter of fact, come to breakfast in the morning at 0730. I'll introduce you to my family." "Thanks. I'll take you up on that. Do I need and tie for church?" "Not at all. Come comfortable." "Okay then. Well, I'll see you at breakfast. Good night." "Good night Logan." Cal fired up the smoker and went to get the shoulders. Once he got the probe in place, he shut the door on the smoker and returned to the house. When he walked in, Siobhan wrinkled her nose. "You need a bath. You smell like beef jerky." "I thought you liked beef jerky!" "I do, but I don't sleep with it in the bed." Cal chuckled and went off to take a shower. The next morning Logan showed up for breakfast and Cal introduced him around. Siobhan poured him a cup of coffee and he smiled while watching the kids and their antics. "Logan, where is your family located?" Siobhan asked. "I don't have one. I spent most of my life in group homes or foster care. As soon as I was old enough, I joined the Army." "Well, you can consider HTR your home and the people here your family now. Do you like blueberry pancakes?" "Yes ma'am, I love them." Siobhan plated five large pancakes and moved the maple syrup and butter next to his plate. A large bowl scrambled eggs and a platter of sausage patties and bacon was passed around." "Are you attending church with us this morning?" "Yes ma'am. The last few months have been hectic and I haven't had a chance to attend." "Good. You can ride with us. I can introduce you to everyone at church. Those that can't attend you'll probably see them at the Community Center this afternoon. I think you'll enjoy our non-denominational church." Cal finished eating and got up. "I need to go get the pork shoulders and get them shredded." "Can I help?" Logan asked. "Sure. Let me get the trays." Cal used the meat claws to lift the shoulders onto the meat tray that Logan was holding. They carried them back to the house and started shredding the meat. Once that was done, Cal added a light amount of pepper vinegar sauce and mixed it up. Siobhan brought out buffet pans and they filled them up.
Siobhan covered the pans with their foil covers and looked around. "We can load these up when we go to church. They'll be all right in the Suburban until we get to the Community Center." Cal and Logan sat at the breakfast bar and had another cup of coffee. "Cal, I need to see about getting a vehicle this week." "No problem. You can use one of the Ranch trucks until you get a car or truck." "Yeah, when they put me under wraps, I lost everything. They did give me a reward and money for what I left behind. I assume there's a Chevy dealer in town?" "Yep. I'll send you to one where you'll get a discount because you work here." "Exactly what is this ranch about? Do you raise cattle or horses?" Cal chuckled. "Yeah, we do that, and more. We've got greenhouses we sell produce from. We have cattle and horses. We run a security company and do some government work. I'll show you around tomorrow. Andy had you sign a non-disclosure statement?" "Yeah, he did. I wondered what that was about." "Like I said, we do some things for the government and there are other things we don't want other people outside of the Ranch to know about because of security concerns." "I understand. Well, I need to go get ready for church. What time are we leaving?" "Meet us back here at 1030." "Okay, later."

After church, everyone began moving to the Community Center. Logan helped carry the food in from the Suburban then got out of the ladies' way. Cal handed him a cup of iced tea and directed him outside.
"It's best to stay out of their way. Just so you know, Agent Hudson gave me your background records. She saved us some time because we would have run an extensive background check on you anyway to work here. Tomorrow, you will understand why. Anyway, you said you grew up in group and foster homes. You don't have any relatives at all?"
Logan shook his head. "None that I know of."
"Well, we treat everyone as family here. So don't be shy."
Cal walked him around, introducing him to several of the attendees. They walked over to where Amanda and Chip were sitting on the patio wall. "Amanda, Chip, this is Logan Allen, a new employee."
Amanda stuck out her hand and shook Logan's. "Hi Logan, welcome aboard."
Logan glance at Chip and started to put out his hand to her but she raised her hand and said "How!"
Logan turned bright red and said "Excuse me", turned and walked away.
Cal and Amanda looked at Chip. "You'd better fix that!" Amanda said.
Chip jumped off the wall and hurried after Logan.
Chip caught up with Logan and took his arm. "Logan! I'm sorry!"
Logan stopped and turned to her.
"I'm sorry, I overreacted."
"No, It was my fault. I didn't mean to embarrass you."
"No, it was me. I've only met a few Native Americans in my life , and none that that looked like you."
"And how was that? Pig Ugly?"
"No! I mean…you are far from ugly…you're beautiful!"
They stood and looked at each other for a few seconds.
"Can we start over? Chip asked. "Hi, I'm Chipeta Burke, receptionist at the Mesa View Vetrinary Clinic."
Logan smiled. "Hello, my name is Logan Allen, newly arrived and not sure of what I'll be doing."
"Where are you from Logan?"
"I guess you could say Missouri. 'Chipeta', that's an unusual name."
"I'm from the Ute Tribe, it means 'White Singing Bird."
"And they call you 'Chip? Why? I think Chipeta is a beautiful name."
"Chip is just a diminutive of my name. You can call me Chipeta, though."
"And I will. I'd never slighten the meaning of your name under any circumstances."
"Now you're going to make me blush. Come on. The Reverend is about to say grace."
Chip and Logan got their plates and went outside to sit at one of the picnic tables. "So, you said you worked at a veterinary clinic. I assume everyone here has ties to the Ranch. What's yours?"
"Kind of a long story but the head vet is Cal's daughter. He set her up to handle this area but it's gone much farther than that. What's your job here?"
"I don't know yet. I recently got out of the service and Cal scooped me up. He's giving me a tour tomorrow and discuss my duties."
"Well that says well of you if Cal is asking you to work for him. This pulled pork is delicious!"
They finished their meal and dumped their trash into the trash receptacale.
"I've got to walk that off. I am stuffed!"
Chip smiled. "Come on. I know just the place."
She led him to Serenity Garden and they walked the paths."
"This is beautiful! You wouldn't expect something like this out here."
"Cal has a man, Kengo Kawabata, that designed and maintains it. He is a wizard. Everything he touches turns to something beautiful. You should see the glade he designed next to the lake! Do you want to see it?"
"Sure."
"Let me see if there's a UV I can borrow."
They walked back to the Community Center and she borrowed the UV34 that Cathleen had driven to the Center. Logan glanced occasionally Chip as she drove them to the lake. She pulled into the parking area and they walked over to the glade.
"This is nice." Logan mused.
Chip walked over to a picnic table and sat down, Logan followed shortly after her.
Chip said dreamily "I could spend a whole day down here. It's so peaceful."
"That it is." Logan agreed.
"Look! A grebe!" Chip said, pointing to a bird on the water.
They sat for a while, enjoying the scenery, no words spoken.
"We better get back. Cathleen may need the UV.
"Okay" Logan said. "It's been nice."
When they got back to the Community Center Logan stopped before they went inside.
"Chipeta, I'm without my own wheels right now. I'll fix that this week. Would you got out to dinner with me Friday?"
"I'd like that Logan. Maybe you'd let me make you dinner some night."
"I can't wait."
They went inside and mingled with the people.
"That was quick." Cathleen said to her mother. "At least she's moving. You and Michael seem to be in a hover."
"We just want to get established in our practice. You'll get your grandchildren soon enough."

Cal met up with Logan the next morning.
"Logan, There's more going on around here than you can probably imagine. I'm going to just show you around and show you everything. When we are through, you'll have some idea of your job here."
Cal showed him everything on the Ranch, explaining how everything and how it fit into the Ranch structure. He finally took him into the shelter. Walking through all the levels and explained the gold recovery process.
"Logan, I'm not hurting for money. Most of everything we make here on the Ranch is plowed back into the Ranch or goes to the various charities we support. The other income producing functions here on the Ranch are there because people wanted to do them and it provides jobs. As you can imagine, there are those out there that will covet what we have done if they knew everything. We've already had an attempted robbery down at the General Store and a drug dealer trying to take over the Ranch. Casey, the manager of the store, handled the robbery, but the restaurant has been added and she's got her hands full. I want you to kind of blend in down there as invisible security and keep an eye on things. If you need anything equipment wise, coordinate with Andy.
"No problem Cal. Can we go down and take a look at the General Store and restaurant?"
"Sure, let's go."
Cal walked Logan back through the shelter and through the entrance to his underground garage for the Command Car.
Logan laughed. "Where in the hell did you get this?"
Cal chuckled. "It was a present from the guys at Becerra Auto Restoration. They did a good job didn't they?"
"Absolutely!"
They drove up to the General Store and Cal introduced Logan to Casey and Gordon. Cal explained to Casey what he planned and Logan took a walk around looking at the layout of the floorplan. They took him over to the restaurant and he did a visual survey there also. When they finished and on the way back to the Ranch, Logan asked Cal, "Do you have any Glaser ammo?"
"I'm pretty sure we do. I'll need to check the inventory. Why do you ask?"
"Well, in a store and restaurant like that, if I had to use my weapon I don't want the chance of collateral damage."
"Gotcha. I'll check as soon as we get back. You okay with the job?"
Logan nodded. Sure. It will be interesting."
Cal and Siobhan decided to go in with the market group on Saturday. The children hovered around the trailers near Cal; Siobhan was helping Dawn get set up. Finally, she had a break and walked over to Cal.
"Big crowd today. I think Dawn brought enough."
Cal noticed a man walk over in their direction, another man with a camera followed him.
"Crap!" Cal muttered.
Siobhan moved away and went to help Dawn. The day went well and everyone was tired when they finally got the trailers cleaned and all the equipment put away. Siobhan and Cal took the kids to the house and prepared them a light dinner.
"Momma! Come see! Daddy's on television!"
Siobhan hurried to the family room, followed by Cal.
The camera moved over, showing Cal talking to Siobhan. A pistol prominently displayed on his hip.
"Mr. Coleman, David Haskins, Fox 4 TV. We've heard your name mentioned quite frequently in the last few months You are a prominent businessman in the Grand Junction area, well known and respected in the community. Have you given any thought to running for national office?"
The video showed Cal frowning. "I'm not interested in dealing with the typical Democrat versus Republican political dance since I have more important things to do with my time, like making sure my family and the Ranch concerns are kept safe and economically viable, something our so called 'Representatives' in Washington seem to forget. To me, once they cross the Beltline they morph into identical entities; do what they can to remain in power, and stiff the people in the United States without any qualms for quid pro quo votes to waste more of our tax dollars. These same people are constantly either supporting the vocal rabble that hate this country or remain quiet to their misdeeds, maneuvering to gain more votes to stay in power. Sir, one man or woman can't fix what's wrong with government. All of them must get on the same sheet of music. No, the only way to fix Washington at this time is to flush the whole mess into the Chesapeake and start all over again, preferably staffed with people that have more common than political sense. Even if I ran and won, I'd only serve one term. That's the way it works. If an election has 75% of the people voting pro-choice and 75% voting strong defense, then you know that the next election cycle will consist only of candidates who are pro-choice and strong defense. It doesn't matter if the candidate is running for the Senate or the House of Representatives. They'll figure out what way people are voting and shift their positions. They're whores. I would only do those things that are right for the people. The corrupt Establishment will have found a reason to get rid of me. I will, however, donate heavily to those who show intestinal fortitude do to the right thing and not what is politically right for them. Unfortunately, we haven't had that type running for office in this state in a while. Do you realize our troops keep winning every battle but our politicians lose every war in collusion with the left biased media? The cowards sacrifice people without the intention of seeing the actions all of the way through to victory. No, I don't want to associate with that cesspool. If we're lucky they'll all drown in their own excrement."
Cal walked out of the view of the camera and the camera panned back to the reporter, standing there with his mouth open.
The video went viral.
"Wow! Why didn't you tell him how you really felt?" Siobhan giggled.
"Crap! I'm going to hear about this!" Cal growled.
Two days later a producer from CNN called and asked if they could do a Skype interview with Cal. Cal didn't even know what Skype was. Billy volunteered to set it up so Cal agreed to the interview. The next morning he was called by CNN for the interview.
"We have with us this morning via Skype, Mr. Cal Coleman of Grand Junction, Colorado."
Good morning Mr. Coleman. I'm Rachel Carter with CNN. The video of your on the street interview has gone viral all over the internet. We took a chance that you'd answer some questions for us."
"Good morning Ms. Carter."
"Mr. Coleman, we've seen a rise in domestic terrorism in the United States in the last year. More and more right wing groups have been added to the list of domestic terrorists. How do you feel about and would you handle this problem?"
Cal didn't even blink. "First, I would look into the reasons why these so called right wing groups were added to the terrorist lists. You see, anyone that rejects the agenda of the left is automatically called a Nazi, terrorist, the unwashed, deplorable, etcetera. No one on the left ever mentions the BLM, ANTIFA, or any of the other bottom-feeding little socialist groups running around destroying public and private property in the name of some petty, drug addicted criminal that got his clocks cleaned. The only people I have seen conducting terroristic activities have been socialist, communist, and racial identity groups. Why haven't you done extensive reporting on their activities instead of calling them 'peaceful protests'? We live in a world in which the truth has taken a back seat to Political Correctness. Even if you are right, if you tell the truth in the wrong way, you'll be wrong. You can't call a shovel a spade in Colorado because it might offend someone in Maryland, and it's being perpetuated by news organizations like yours. If I, for instance, said something like ' the blacks, Chinese, Muslims or whatever the favorite race of the day was, don't want to be integrated into American society, they just want to segregate into their own little groups,' then in the next segment of your news room, you would be calling me a racist."

"Mr. Coleman…" "No, you started this crap Ms. Carter, now let me finish my statement." "In a perfect world, a journalist would gather the facts and present only the germane information, the unadulterated truth. But journalism has been tainted by the agenda driven political bias of the presenters. You may be blind to your own bias, but it is there. The question you just asked me was so laced with left-wing innuendos that no matter what I said, it would make me out to be a supporter of criminality, which the left thinking people in this country have no problem supporting when their poputchik conduct their acts, but for myself, it is communistic and un-American. This interview is over. " Cal cut off the Skype feed and the newsreader fumbled with her papers on her news desk until the screen cut to a commercial. Siobhan started laughing. "Okay, cowboy. You've had your fifteen minutes of fame. You'd better stop now before you get your butt in a sling." "I am, unless a conservative show calls. Then THAT will be my last interview. BOOM! Mike drop moment! Six million positive hits on YouTube! Cal went to Joshua the next morning. Joshua looked up and started chuckling. "Man, you've been setting some tails on fire!" "Well, they asked me, I told them. Look, I've got a job for you. I need you to go get these signs made. Cal gave him to printed sheets. Two hundred and fifty of each. I want them in metal, 3 x 5 feet. Tell them there is a 25% bonus if they can deliver in two weeks." The printed sheets had an illustration with: WARNING NO TRESPASSING Use of deadly force beyond this point is authorized This is private property "I'll go right now. So, this have to do with the videos?" "Yeah, maybe nothing will come of it, but the ankle biters with Molotov cocktails can get to be a problem." "I hear ya. I'm outta here." Can went down to see Andy. Andy grinned when Cal walked into the office. "You do know how to stir up a fire ant nest!" "Maybe it will get people thinking in the right direction. Look, I want everyone issued Glaser ammo for use here on the Ranch. It's bad enough shots may be fired but I want to cut down on collateral damage." "Okay. I got a call from Augustine a few minutes ago. He said we should expect a package this afternoon." "Hmmmm…" "Cal, a C-27 called in for landing instructions. He'll be here in ten." "Thanks Mike. I'm on my way." Cal called Gary and Andy and told them to meet him at the airfield ASAP. Gary pulled up as the C-27 Spartan taxied into the parking area. The loadmaster, carrying a clipboard, walked over to the three men. "I've got two pallets for you." Gary asked, "What is it?" "All I know is it's explosive. The shipping documents are in the sealed envelope." Gary went inside the large hangar and drove the forklift out to the rear of the aircraft. Cal opened the envelope and looked at the shipping documents. "AA12 shotguns, twelve of them." Cal read. Andy looked at the document. "Whoa! These are fully automatic!" "…70,000 rounds of buckshot, 50,000 rounds of sabot slug, and 50,000 rounds of flechette." Cal placed the documents back in the envelope.
"I wonder what Augustine has on his mind?" The crew closed the plane back up, started the engines and took off. Gary stacked the ammo in the hangar temporarily then went to get a truck and trailer. Cal and Andy grabbed the cases of shotguns off the pallets and opened one up. "Yep, selective fire. Andy said. "Damn! These are pretty! Each comes with two stick and two drum mags. I think I'll take a set of mags down to Miguel and see if Carlos can make up Molle pouches for these." "Good Idea, There's some bolts of camouflage cordura in the supply room. Take one down with you." After Gary checked the serial numbers, Andy took 6 of the guns and several cases of ammo with him to the facility and Gary took the rest to the Shelter. Cal's phone beeped and incoming message. "Be there in 30." It was from Larry. Cal figured he'd be flying in so he went over to the tower to chat with Mike. Harriet was there with Mike. She poured him a cup of coffee. Mike chuckled. "You've become quite the celebrity lately." Cal frowned. "Yep. Everyone has their fifteen minutes of fame. You heard of any more incoming aircraft?" "No, Radar's not showing anything….wait….someone just squawked. The pilot called, requesting landing instructions. "Well, there's your answer. That's a homeland bird." "Yeah, it's Larry Augustine. I'll go down to meet him." The plane landed and taxied to the parking area. When the airstair came down, Larry stepped out and walked over to Cal. "How'd you like the guns?" Larry asked, grinning. "They're great! Got any more? "I can scrape you up a dozen more." "What's the deal, Larry?" "A lot of people are watching out for you. They like your ideas. Some consider you one of the few sane people left." "I don't know about that. There are a lot of people like me. They just don't stumble into the limelight like I do sometimes." "Well, HTR Test and Evaluation will be taken care of if we can keep the liberals out of our hair. We've been winning the battles but it's been tough." "You want a cup of coffee?" "Nah. We're going to fuel up and fly back to Washington."

With that, the crew chief and one of the mechanics brought the fuel truck over to the plane and began fueling.
"Anything hot on the radar Larry?
"Just the liberal 'woke' groups. We expect them to move to more violent actions. Even the Democrats are getting worried."
"Serve them right. They brought this crap on."
"Yeah, the whole bunch is a pain in the house. I hope the next election turns things around."
The pilot signaled to Larry they were ready. Larry shook Cal's hand and walked to the plane. Cal watched as the pilots started the plane and taxied onto the runway. With a blast of the powerful engines the plane picked up speed and took off. Mike walked up.
"What's going on?
"Mike, I have no idea. Seems we have a Fairy Godmother out there." Cal knew one of the more conservative news networks would most likely be contacting him for an interview. Sure enough, two days later, a producer called and asked to do an interview.
"I'm not going to Denver to do an interview via satellite."
"No Mt. Coleman. We'll send a satellite truck to whatever location you will meet us at. Could we do it at your ranch?"
Cal hesitated. "Okay. With stipulations. No photos or videos will be taken until the interview starts. None will be taken after the interview. Once the interview has been completed, your crew packs up and leaves. We will send you the coordinates of the gate you will enter the Ranch. I want that in writing."
"Agreed! Will Thursday morning be okay? That will give us time to tape the interview for the show that evening."
"That's fine. Give me your email address and I'll send you the coordinates."
The filming crew showed up at the Ranch main gate on time. Johan led them up to the gathering house and observed the unloading of the equipment. What few people the crew saw, each was wearing a pistol. Finally, Cal made his entrance into the Gathering House. The producer had arranged the cameras so Cal was sitting at a table with his back to the smoker.
Once everything was to the producer, Charles Baylor's liking, the interview began.
"Good evening. Tonight we'll be discussing the diabolical schemes the current administration are hatching that could bring our country to its knees. Also, we have with us via satellite, Cal Coleman of Grand Junction, Colorado. Mr. Coleman recently came into America's view due to two videos posted on the internet. One was a one the street video at a local farmers market in Grand Junction, and the other video was of Mr. Coleman being interviewed by Rachel Carter of CNN. If you haven't seen those videos, you should. Mr. Coleman doesn't mince words and tells it like it is. Jack, do we have the feed? Yes? Okay."
"Mr. Coleman? This is Tom Benton with the Benton Report on OAN."
"Good evening Mr. Benton."
"Mr. Coleman, your video, or I should say the videos of you, have gone viral on the internet. What you said on those videos have struck fertile soil throughout the nation and caused people to sit up and take notice. Mostly good, a few dissenters. How has the attention affected you?"
Cal smiled "Life is as usual here on the Ranch. We're well away from the nutjobs in Denver, and we keep the predators under control here."
"You mentioned in the CNN interview that 'Washington should be flushed into the Chesapeake and start over.' A lot of the leftist politicians have gone on record as saying you are advocating violence and demand something needs to be done."
"Yes, curs do that. They'll gang up and bark their heads off until you go after them. Then they whimper and run away with their tails between their legs. I'm not advocating anything, but am prepared to defend my people. Conservative Americans are in an asymmetrical situation. The leftist yapping dogs could come at us from any direction."
Tom Benton chuckled. "So, how can we make them whimper and just go away?"
"I don't really know. I try to mind my own business. I was asked questions, I gave them my answers and narrow-minded bigots got angry. On the other hand, I do believe the supporters of the French Revolution may have been on to something. They brought out their guillotines. Problem solved. Out here, when the coyotes become a problem, we eradicate them."
"We're getting short on time. Let me ask you one last question. 'What do you think has brought us to this point with the problems in this country?"
Cal looked down at his hands, then looked up again.
"America isn't the melting pot it once was. People from everywhere came here and became one people. I've seen pictures of Italians during the last century arriving at Ellis Island waving, not Italian, but American flags. They weren't asking for anything but a chance to be an American and have a better life than what they had where they came from. Many couldn't speak English, but they learned. They still spoke their individual languages, but they also strived to be a part of America.
I think that a lot of people have forgotten that. Too many people want to gobble up the bounty that vote grubbing politicians offer them and keep themselves separate. We have African Americans, Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, Arab Americans, Indian Americans, and, for all I know, Martian Americans. Many don't want to be a part of what made America great. What happened to just being an American?
Then we have those legal citizens with weak spines and minds, educated by socialists in our schools, being offended by everything under the sun. Also we have those who have swapped out the 'N' word for Nazi and Deplorable. They are doing nothing for this country. All they want to do is feel good and force their beliefs and politics on others. Nobody obviously cares how I feel, so I stay away from people like that. Here on the High Top Ranch, we have people of Japanese, Native American, Irish, Scottish, English, African, Mexican, and a couple that just might be of Martian ancestry. We all work together, go to church and pray together, eat together, and laugh and cry together. When it comes down to defending our property and members of our community, we stand together as one. We are a microcosm of what America should be."

"Wow!. Well, thank you Mr. Coleman for taking your time to speak with use tonight."
The producer grinned. "Wow indeed! That was great! Okay guys! Let's get packed up."
Siobhan and Belinda came through the door with pitchers of iced tea.
"Gentlemen, would you care for some refreshment? If tea isn't to your liking, I'm sure we can get you something else."
The producer turned around. "Holy cow!"
"Mr. Baylor, this is my wife Siobhan."
"I am pleased to meet you. Cal, could We get a picture of you and her by the fireplace?"
"Mr. Baylor, we agreed no extra pictures. This is for security purposes. I don't care if someone identifies me, but I want to keep my family out of it."
Baylor's eyes got big. "You really believe this asymmetrical warfare!"
"Mr. Baylor, we don't ever know who our enemies are sometimes, until after the fact."
"I understand."
The crew finished their drinks and packed up. Jonah escorted them to the gate and watched as they left. When Jonah got back to the Gathering House, Andy was standing in front with Cal.
"Hoss, you shore poked that rattlesnake with a stick."
Andy grinned. So, I'm sure all of this has a reason?"
Cal drug the toe of his boot around a little. "Well, after that interview at the farmers market got everyone fired up, it's only logical someone was going to retaliate. I poked them enough that a few of their "protesters" will try to come after me. Andy, those shotguns couldn't have arrived at a more opportune time. Dave Harris know how to load a special shotgun round. It's a cross between a Dragon's Breath and rock salt. It's not the normal rock salt crystals, but salt beads the size of #9 shot. I want enough to have a drum and a stick mag for each shotgun. If we do get a group of agitators in, and they breech the compound perimeter, I want their legs to feel the wages of their indiscretion. I want two reaction forces, each with a sniper. If they bring Molotov cocktails to the party, we nail them in the thigh. Each group will have the Sheriff's office on speed dial."
Andy nodded. Jonah grinned. "What about across the road?"
"If they get involved, they'll be more exposed. Issue them Mossbergs with #8 shot, plus a sniper. I think they can handle things." "Okay, cowboy, are you done now?"
Cal grinned. "Siobhan, I didn't go looking for this, but I'm seeing it through. I'm tired of these little 'woke' bigots trying to maneuver this country into a socialist utopia. Yes, I'm through doing interviews. I'll let them take the next step, if they have the balls to do it, but they'll come away without them."
"Cal, can you come down to the Facility?"
"Yeah, Shay. Give me ten minutes."
When Cal went in, Andy and Shay were just coming out the door.
"Let's do this outside." Andy said. They walked away from the building and stopped.
"Okay Don."
All of a sudden the warbling scream of a siren began and went on for several seconds, then stopped.
"Man that's loud!" Cal said.
"Yeah, should be able to hear it over at the Circle B."
Cal backed up so he could see the 3-horn siren on a small tower mounted to the roof of the Facility.
"Where is the switch?"
"In the monitoring room."
"I want to hold a security briefing Sunday afternoon at the Community Center for augmented recall shelter procedures. I'll put it up on the web this afternoon."
"Good. What about the ammo?"
"Dave's working overtime with a couple of helpers. He should be through this afternoon."
"Do a side briefing with Eric. I'm making him shelter coordinator. I've already briefed him on his duties and responsibilities."
"Roger. Larry called. The other shotguns will be in today sometime."
"Okay, Let Jimmy know and give him four of them, with ammo."
"Cal? Wicker here. If I were to drop by, could we get refueled?"
"Of course. I look forward to seeing you again."
"I'll give you a call ." Wicker said.
Cal called Andy. "Andy, Wicker is going to 'drop by.' I'll want to use the SCIF."
"Interesting. I'll be ready."
Cal walked back to the family room. Siobhan was coming down the stairs with a couple of roller bags.
"Where are you going?"
"Oh! I'm just moving a few things to the shelter. Every time we get a 'security briefing,' the nasty stuff is about to hit the fan. I'm just moving a few things to the shelter so the children will be more comfortable."
"Where is Brigid?"
"She's with Belinda in the shelter, supervising Belinda."
Cal chuckled. "I supposed through your 'Tell-a-Woman' network, all the other families are doing the same thing?"
"Of course! The more we are prepared, the less stress there is."
"You should go look at the Chapel They just finished."
With all that had been going on, that had slipped his mind. Diana had excavated out a large area that they were going to convert into a chapel in the shelter area. Reverend Lambry and Edna had ordered the appropriate furniture, Jerry and Glen had been working on lighting and audio-visual. He decided to go check it out.

Edna saw him enter. "Hey Cal."
"Hi Edna. The place is looking good!"
The place was actually looking beautiful! Insets in the walls contained lighted stained glass windows with a religious theme. Video monitors were placed in areas that were obscured from the podium. New pews were in place and the floor was covered with cork tile.
The Reverend walked over. "How do you like it Cal?"
"It's beautiful! You all have done a great Job!"
"Did you see the sign over the door?"
"No, I didn't." Reverend Lambry led Cal Back outside. Above the door was a sign that matched the doors. "Hope Chapel."
"The name has a double meaning. I'm sure you know the first, but this sanctuary perhaps will give people hope in dire times. Andy said it would also give a central point for a headcount when the shelter is occupied."
Cal nodded. "Who made the doors?"
"Joshua did. He does fine work." The burnished oak doors with heavy hardware were beautiful."
"Thank you for doing this, Reverend. Perhaps we can have our first sermon here Sunday to bless it."
"Of course, we will prepare for it."
Cal left the shelter and Went to check on Dennis and Shay's work. Taking a Rokon, he headed out to the sites. They were busy at the first one. Cal watched as they moved earth and pack the soil on the dam. They saw him and parked the equipment.
"It looks good guys! Looks like you won't have much more to do."
"Another foot or so on the dam. We might as well check it while we're taking a break. How's the threat assessment?"
"Nothing so far. Sorry about that."
"You've nothing to be sorry for Cal. Just because they don't like how we think gives them no right to interfere with our way of life. We're a threat to no one, unless they come after us."
"Just make sure you are armed out here."
"Every day. Never can tell when a snake will pop up."
Cal grinned. "Well, I think we should hold off on the liners until this is resolved. We'll need several people to help installing them. When you're finished here, just move to the other site.
"Will do Cal."
Cal was thinking on the ride back to the compound. So much to do and this possible threat was slowing things down. He stopped the bike when his phone rang.
"Cal? Wicker. I'll be there in an hour. I'm coming by chopper."
"I'll meet you at the airfield."
Cal called Andy notified him of Wicker's impending arrival. Hurrying back to the compound, he refueled the Rokon and put it back into the equipment hangar, then got in the Suburban and drove to the Facility to pick Andy up.
Mike called and said the helicopter was inbound. They watched as the Bell 429 hovered above the runway and slowly maneuvered over to the parking area. Once the blades stopped moving, Wicker got out and walked over to the Suburban. The men greeted and got into the vehicle and Andy drove them down to the Facility. Cal led them into the SCIF. Before the door closed, Jeanie came in with a serving tray with coffee, cream and sugar. She secured the door as she left. The men poured the coffee and Wicker cleared his throat.
"Cal, electronic intelligence is hearing some rumblings of different groups indicating they found where the Ranch is. It looks like they're setting up for a protest here."
"Well, we've put up 3x5 No Trespassing signs all along the property perimeter saying that deadly force will be used." Cal said.
Andy went on to explained their security plans, to include having to Huey in the air observing with the FLIR to make sure there weren't intruders trying to flank them.
"Rock salt! Will that penetrate clothing?
Cal grinned. "We'll give you a demo when we're done here."
Wicker nodded. "Well, the best we can do is to keep giving you updates as we learn anything. Andy, I'll call you on your secure phone. We'll keep observers on them once they start bunching up. There seems to be several groups involved. Now, show me this rock salt round you have."
Andy got out an AA-12 with a stick magazine and they rode over to the range. Taking a pre-prepared ballistic gel block out faced with four layers of fabric the men went back to the firing line and put on ear protection. Andy chamber a round and shot the block from twenty meters. He safed the weapon and they walked back to the gelatin block.
"Holy Shit! Wicker said. "That's better penetration than rock salt!"
They walked back to the firing line and Andy cut open one of the shells and emptied it on the bench. The small pellets rolled around. Wicker picked up one of the pellets and put it on his tongue. It slowly dissolved. Spitting the remains on the ground he said "Yep, that's salt."
Andy grinned. Watch this! Loading a different magazine, he waited until everyone had put on ear protection, moved the safety switch to a different position, and fired three rounds on automatic. A wall of flame erupted from the barrel of the shotgun, almost reaching the gel block.
"Dragon's Breath!"
"These are a little less powerful than the Dragon's Breath rounds. They've been loaded to only flame out to the effecting range of the salt."
"Wow! You wouldn't allow me to have a few of these, would you?"
Andy grinned. "I have a box of twenty-five and a reloading instruction sheet for you."
"Man! I can see some use for these. The psychological effect of the flame would be devastating!"
They went back to the SCIF and had another cup of coffee.
"We'll stay out of your way on this." Wicker said.
"You can't." Cal replied. "They will most assuredly have Molotov cocktails…weapons of mass destruction, arson, attempted murder, moving across state lines to commit murder, conspiracy…and I can go on and on."
"Yeah, you're right. Okay, I'll have a team of guys training with the Sheriff's Department for the foreseeable future. Can you guys hold 'em until a combined force can get out here?"
"I'm sure we can. Are you going to coordinate with the Sheriff?"
"Yes, I'll do that on the way back."

They finished their coffee and went back to the airfield. The helicopter had been refueled, Cal didn't charge them.
"Oh! I have something for you." Wicker said, taking out two cases of Flex-Cuffs out of the helicopter. "You might find some use for these."
Andy grinned. "We'll find a use for them."
They waited until the helicopter left and went back to the Facility.
"Cal, I'll get these cuffs issued to the teams. Also, I've got everyone issued helmets with comms and night vision. I want you to be leading the reserve force, if you would."
"No problem. I am concerned about flankers. But, as long as we have the FLIR, we shouldn't have a problem."
Cal went back to the house to have lunch with Siobhan and Brigid.
Cal was helping Siobhan clean up after lunch when there was a knock at the door. Cal opened the door and there stood Andy.
"Groups have started moving out of Seattle and Portland. Wicker's people are keeping them under surveillance. They haven't determined where their rendezvous is."
"Okay. Continue preps and we'll see where this goes."
"I gave four of the shotguns to Miguel. Casey is satisfied with her Judge and Gordon has a 20 gauge Remington 1100 with a skeet barrel. Mike also has an AA-12 and rounds without the Dragon's Breath."
Cal grinned. "Gordon's going after Molotovs. He's hell on a skeet range."
Andy left and Cal went back inside to his office and checked his gear.
Siobhan came in as he was checking the AA-12. "The ladies are checking their shelter quarters for anything they may have missed."
"Siobhan, when people start to occupy the shelter, I want all of them directed to the Chapel. Make a list of all Ranch residents and check them off as they report in. I'll need you to make sure you notify me if anyone is missing. Tell the ladies to have a radio with them at all times until this is over."
""Yes Dear. I've already got a list prepared. Edna and the Reverend are going to help out."
"Fine. Cal leaned over and kissed her. I love you." "Cal looks like they are all meeting up at Long Family Memorial Park."
"That's kind of close already."
"It'll be a couple of days yet. If we intercept anything else, I'll let you know."
"Thanks Agent Wicker."
It was Sunday morning and Cal was enjoying making pancakes for the kids. There was an orderly chaos as children scrambled to get to their seats and talking to each other. Siobhan placed the bowls and platters of scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage on the table. Cal placed the large platter of pancakes on the table and they scramble for them began. Cal's phone rang.
"Cal, they're leaving here at 12 noon tomorrow."
"Thanks."
Cal called Andy. He wanted to get the principle actors together at 2:00 pm that afternoon to go over last minute details.
Siobhan gave Cal a questioning look.
"Tomorrow" he mouthed.
The siren went off at 11:00. Everyone knew what was coming. Some even started occupying the shelter before the siren sounded. By 11:30 everyone was accounted for. Security teams were in place and the wait began.
Adam and Sonia had drones up as far away as the tunnel, acting as early warning. Casey and Logan had the customers leave the General Store and restaurant, telling them what was coming. A lot of them wanted to go home and get their guns but Logan convinced them they had everything under control. Miguel and his brothers were ready.
Sonia announced that the protestors had just cleared the tunnel. There seemed to be about twenty cars and vans. They would be there within thirty minutes. The shelter was fully locked down. If everything went to hell, Sean and Aedan we on the mesa with sniper rifles.

Miguel saw the vehicles on the road first and warned his brothers, who took their positions. The vehicles had stopped along the road between the two gates. People got out of their cars and were talking, pointing to the no trespassing signs. A car slowly drove to the General Store and pulled up. A guy got out with a gas can and walked to the pumps. He attempted to fill the can but the pumps had been turned off. Logan walked out of the door, AA-12 in hand. "Hey man! Turn on the pumps." Logan smiled. "We're not selling gas today." Hey dude, I have the right to buy gas." "And we have a right to refuse service." Frustrated, the young man threw the gas can in the trunk of the car and threw up gravel leaving the lot. Logan reported the situation to Cal over open radio net. The protesters started gathering and moving. "They are moving to the main drive." Aedan announced over the radio. The security team at the main gate readied themselves. Cal's reserve force were sitting in their UV34s, ready to reinforce if necessary. When the protesters reached the gate, they were faced with six men, armed with AA-12s, standing ready. "We want to see Coleman!" Bill took one step forward. "He's not available. You are on private property and you need to leave." "We don't recognize property rights!" "And maybe we don't recognize your right to breathe!" Six explosions went off. Adam Benning had previously set up a teargas ambush. Placing a small piece of C-4 in the bottom of a teargas shipping canister, he topped it with a quarter inch steel disk and set it on top of the explosive. This was placed in the bottom of a narrow post hole. Pulling the pin on the grenade, it was placed back into the canister and covered with a light layer of debris. When the charge went off, it would launch the grenade into the air, releasing the grenade spoon. The protesters ducked when the explosions went off and were quickly enveloped in a teargas cloud. They were shouting and cursing, but pulled back a fifty yards past the gas cloud. They had pulled back right into another ambush zone Adam had placed, so he initiated it. Again, they ducked and quickly moved back. This time there had been twelve grenades and more widely spaced. "Protesters are moving back to the road." Sonia announced. The protester moved back to their vehicles and looked to be arguing. Cal pushed his push-to-talk button. "We've only got a couple of hours until EENT. They will probably try something around that time. Stand easy." The drone video show the protesters collecting around their vehicles and not looking to move too soon. As the last light of the day was fading, the protesters began stirring. Sonia again gave the warning. Both security teams and the reserve went to higher alert. Adam put another drone into the air to cover the area around the main gate and halfway to the Facility gate while Sonia covered the Facility gate and halfway to the main gate. Ken was in the air using the FLIR for overall coverage, with Charlie acting as door gunner. The protesters moved forward to the Facility gate. There was a scramble as coats were thrown over the barbwire topped fence and protesters were assisting each other to crawl over. Andy led the security team forward. Explosions went off, launching teargas grenades over the fence into the crowd. Floodlights on the Facility roof were turned on, blinding the dozen or so protesters. Andy raised the bullhorn. "HALT! You are on private property. We ARE authorized to use deadly force!" The protesters continued to yell and cuss and moved more rapidly over the open area. Six AA-12s fired a volley of three of the modified rock salt rounds into the legs of the charging protesters, flame licking around their legs. Protesters dropped to the ground, screaming, all along the line. Those still standing where given the same treatment. Quickly, all the protesters were crying out and withering on the ground. The security team quickly moved forward and cuffed the legs and arms of the protesters. Sirens were heard and several Sheriff and Highway Patrol vehicles vehicle sped down the road to the protest. The protesters, thwarted in gaining entrance to the Ranch, turned on the State Police and Sheriff's deputies. Miguel and his brothers, along with Logan, moved forward to back up the police. As the police pulled up, Gordon spotted a protester lighting a Molotov cocktail. As the bottle left the protester's hand, Gordon blew it out of the air, showering the other protesters with flaming fuel. Another was thrown toward the General Store. Again, Gordon shot it out of the air. Protesters rushed at the buildings and the AA-12s erupted, spraying rock salt and flames at the legs of the protesters. Screaming protesters lay on the ground while those few still standing, were quickly rounded up and cuffed. Fire extinguishers had to be used to put out the fuel fires on people's clothing.
Ken and Sonia called the area clear so the reserve and main gate security teams move down the state road and secured the vehicles. Cal spotted the Sheriff and walked over to him. "Damn Earl, took you long enough." Cal said. "Sheriff Gilmore grinned. "I didn't want my boys to work up a sweat. Kill anybody?" "Nope. Everyone was using rock salt, except Earl. You're going to need a few buses to haul the mob off." "They're coming, along with ambulances. Gibson's towing is going to make a bundle tonight." The Sheriff held a news conference the next day. He asked Cal to attend. "Ladies and gentlemen, I want to read a statement concerning events of last at the High Top Ranch. Printed copies are available for those who wish them.
At no time did the residents on the High Top Ranch go beyond what the Law allows. They were perfectly within their rights to defend their property against harmful aggression. Not only were the protestors attempting to commit arson and attempted murder on the ranch property, they also attempted to burn down the Mesa View General Store and Casey's Restaurant. No charges will be filed against Mr. Coleman nor his employees.
I will entertain questions at this time." A reporter raised his hand. "I have a question for Mr. Coleman!" "There are those screaming for your arrest because of your actions last night. No one should be above the law. Why did you and your people take the law into your own hands?" Cal stared at the reporter. Rubbing his hand through his hair, he asked, "Well, your 'there are those' can kiss my ass. Have you ever stood before a screaming crowd of Marxist and Socialist deranged thugs armed with bricks, bike locks, and wooden staffs, watching them light Molotov cocktails to throw at you and burn your property down?" "No," the reporter answered, uncertain of where the topic was going. Cal replied, "When you have done that and have gotten the smell of fire and burned flesh out of your nose, come back and talk to me. Until you've done that, I suggest that you have no idea what you are talking about. We'll handle social breakdown our way, but within the boundaries of the law. I hate the fact that I can find no way to deal honorably with dishonorable people. I find it disgusting that in order to save the people and the land I love, I have to deal with them the only way they understand…with brute, but legal, force. Now if you'll excuse me, there are real reporters who want to interview me. Your question was a waste of my time. I'm sure that many of your viewers feel the same." The reporter stared as the Cal moved away from the podium and left the room.. Muttering rippled through the group of reporters as Cal and the Sheriff left the room. No more protests were attempted after so many protestors had been injured. No one, not even the police, had defied them before. Life went on as usual and in celebration of the peace, of course there had to be a party. All the residents and a few neighbors gathered beside the lake to spend time with each other and share food. Cal was sitting with his back to the picnic table, relaxing as he nursed a Smithwick’s. It had been a long afternoon and early evening as they celebrated the summer with family and friends at the picnic by the lake. It had been a perfect day, not too hot, but lots of sunshine. "What are you dreaming of, My Love?" Siobhan asked. "You. All the good times. Our friends. Our family." "Yeah. That's where the smile came from. My cowboy is happy." "Yeah. Your cowboy is happy," Cal agreed. Siobhan sat beside Cal with her arm around his back and her head on his shoulder.' “You know Siobhan, since I came out here to Colorado, I’ve been blessed. I don’t know what caused it….I don’t know…it’s like I had the only pool in the neighborhood and all the good kids wanted to jump into the pool with me. Today, I gazed around today and my chest swelled with pride seeing all the people gathered here. I wonder every day what’s around the corner.” “Well, it has been a great day, Cowboy. Time to go home. We can have a nice shower and then we can play,” she whispered seductively. “I like the sound of that. Is everything cleaned up?” “Yes. It’s all looked after. Nothing for you to worry about until the next party,” she laughed. The two walked slowly to the Suburban. Gathering the kids, they got them loaded and drove back to the house. THE END (Ready for Book Two?)

(Ready for Book Two?)
Considering this is a fictional story about fictional current events ALREADY happening... My opinion is that there are enough fictional current events taking place that you could easily do 12-14 more books to cover them all.

"Okay, I'll figure out the building materials. We'll need to palletize everything. AirTrans will drop off all the 468L pallets, nets and straps we need ahead of time, so they'll have as little time on station as possible.” Air Trans…. 12.5 years of it under my belt. 463L pallets, 108” x 88” 10,000 lb capacity, 250lb PSI before shoring, aluminum skin/rails with a thick balsa core. straps CGU-1Bs net sets two sides and a top net. sometimes I miss my old job. Fun to read it mentioned. I love the story and am obviously trying to catch up. Keep up the great writing.
