The delay in reporting the incident probably saved his life that day. By the time the “higher ups” got the report and passed it on to his wife, he was out of the area. The shock of hitting the cold water brought him back to his senses. After getting some bandages out of his backpack, he left the backpack float away, knowing that it would give him away or even drown him.
Swimming underwater to a nearby rock overhang, he then applied the bandages to his thigh. He knew that he had lost blood. He was thankful that he didn't live in an area that had crocs or gators that would be attracted by the blood. He could hear the soldiers talking, so after the bandage was on, he broke a hollow reed off to use as a breathing tube. Keeping under the overhang, he slowly swam underwater going downstream.
About 500 yards down the river he came out of the water and slowly started working his way back to his mine. That took him 3 days to complete. Once in the mine and setting the entrance alarms he set about cleaning and repairing the damage from the bullet hole as best as he could. He even had some fish antibiotics that he started taking.
Meanwhile his wife was livid that the soldiers had botched the mission and delayed reporting it. A lot of heads were literally removed from the soldiers bodies and she was in trouble from her boss. Her having the soldiers killed also removed information that they had.
All was going okay til a few days later the old man noticed something when cleaning the wound.

The laptop was always carried in the backpack because of its size.

While bent over his wound tending to it, he smelled a putrid odor. Then he noticed a thin red line starting from the wound and extending about 2 inches up his leg. Realizing the dirty river water got into the open wound and blood poisoning had started.
Hurriedly he grabbed several different medical books he had. Looking it up, he soon realized he was in big trouble. He thoroughly cleaned his wound again, retching from the smell. He must of dumped a whole bottle of peroxide into the wound, watching it bubble and fizzle. He increased the amount of fish antibiotics he was taking and took every immune boosting herb he could find. 2 days later the red line was 10 inches in length.

The old man was scared. Every day the red line was getting longer. He knew he was going to die, he knew he had Jesus Christ as his Saviour and would be going to Heaven But it was the new experience of dying. He was in pain and had a fever. While he could, he placed containers of water and food within reach. Also a bucket for bowel movements.
He had his Bible and read it often. Also his grand dad's letters that he read over and over. He was bed ridden now and often in a feverish state of mind. One day he could hear the entrance alarms going off, or was that just his feverish mind playing tricks on him. Then this devilish image looming over him. Trying to focus, he could see his wife.
His wife had been busy and her computer research had turned up a property deed in his grand dad's name. The small size of it and the location had her in her vehicle traveling there. Using her GPS, she located the mine opening and went inside. She saw the man of her hatred, her husband, laying on a bed. The smell made her retch in disgust. She could see the beads of sweat on his forehead. He didn't seem to recognize her.
Moving closer she yanked the blankets down and saw him completely naked. She saw the festering wound in his thigh and the thin red line extending from the wound to almost his heart area. She knew he was dying. The old man was trying to reach some water to drink but she smashed all the water and food far away from him. Leaning over him, she was manically laughing in his face. He was whispering – water, but she just laughed the harder.
Looking around, she saw his Bible and threw it far away. Then looked at the papers from his grand dad. She saw the word – gold. Her eyes lit up. The map in her hand and the dim light showing the way; she ran down the passageway screaming gold, GOLD, GOOOOLLLDDD! It took several seconds for her to reach the bottom of that deep hole.
The old man heard her screams for 3 days before he died of the blood poisoning. The nano particles kept repairing her body for 3 weeks before they ran out of ways to repair.

Lessons
# The little mistakes can and will hurt you in SHTF.
# Unlike the fictional TV shows, the good guy rarely gets the woman.
Thanks to papaof2 for the idea early in the story of how to use that deep hole.

Thank you for the story. It was not a “feel good” story. It was more realistic then that. Hopefully Dan & Karen were “right with God” before they were killed. Because of Jesus blood it was very possible. That computer could have been very valuable. Realize 2021. Now people know that the wild stories of death, side effects from “the jab” are true. That the virus was deadly for a very small percentage. While they are trying to stick to its a good vaccine. Anyone who does not blindly follow the herd knows better. My wife decided to get the jabs. I told her I would not, but if she wanted. She had a very bad reaction. Has had multiple reoccurrences. So she is upset I did not talk her out of getting it… “I never knew I had that authority over your body?”
