Sorry Tex - but we don't escape the real world. I lost the dog I'd had more than half my life when I was in high school. Might have been the start of my writing as I wrote a long rant about it. Unfortunately, that pencil on notebook paper missive didn't survive 60 years of moving around so I no longer have that piece.
The kids didn't take the loss of their cat much better. He became my cat after they went off to college, always begging at my knee when I had salty-crunchy snacks and trying to be a lap cat - this is the animal the vet never called by name but just told an assistant "Go get the big yellow cat".

As I was reading the last chapter and got to the part where John was zigzagging across the open ground with his dog hard on his heels I had a quick though of thats not good. Yes it adds to the realness of the story but why couldnt it have been some stray that showed up at the last second and gave its life to save John or one of the crew ?

ian,
You write to punish your characters and impact your readers. There was no other reason than that to kill John's dog.
This may only be a story, but reveals much about the writer.
Gone for good.

After much thought, I will not be continuing my stories due to people finding them offensive. It was not my intention to be offensive. Nor was it my intention to cause disruption on this PAW board.

First I'd like to wish everyone an excellent Good Friday and Easter weekend.
iamnobody - I hope you continue your stories.
texican - I'm not trying to pile on or flame - as there are times I read things I might not "like" or "agree" with. Like you, I have a choice - I can continue reading or I can stop reading. It doesn't mean lashing out at the author. Besides, last I knew none of us are paying the authors for their work (unless they publish, or put on kindle and we buy their story).

Guess all it takes is one karen to blow up a collection of good stories that I was 95% enjoying. I, too, didn't care for the loss of the dog, but that's MY problem to deal with, not IAN's or anyone else's. Constructive criticism is one thing, trying to effect a change in another with a threat to 'take one's ball and go home if I don't like something' is completely different.
I have a problem with someone playing censor when it's not their right to. If it's YOUR board and forum, that's your prerogative, but I'm under the impression it's not, so your ONLY recourse is to not read...or remove yourself fully from the board if it offends you to even see the thread. (I got offended by John over at Frugal's nine years ago. My only recourse was to leave. I did so. Last I checked, a few months ago, my account was still there and active for the logging in. I did, to verify that out of curiosity, but will never post substantively there again. I'm sure they do not miss me, and I caused them no grief over what I disagreed with.)
Bottom line is, Texican, the way you handled your offended-ness (?) appears it's going to affect others' ability to continue reading. You don't have that right, to bully another into changing their actions.
IAN, I'd appreciate reading the story to its conclusion, but fully understand if the wind's been taken out of your sails. Whether you choose to reconsider and continue, or end it here, or start another story.... I'll read (or not) and I'll also thank you for what you've posted thus far.

IAN,
I’m sorry you feel the need to stop your story. Like others, I’ve followed and was looking forward to seeing where it went.
And I’m sorry the dog got killed, but this is a PAW fiction site after all, and we can’t count on everything ending happily ever after. Heck, I have a section of the garden devoted to my four-legged family members.
So, I guess when I finish working in the garden today, instead of reading, I’ll watch TV. Maybe Disney, it's always uplifting. Hopefully, Old Yellar has been remade. No matter how many time I see the original, I still cry. Bret
PS: don’t stop writing!

After much thought, I will not be continuing my stories due to people finding them offensive. It was not my intention to be offensive. Nor was it my intention to cause disruption on this PAW board. I don't post much, if at all, but don't let one person bring you down. I like your stories. I've buried a dog with many tears in my eyes so I know what it's like. Just keep on writing and don't let the people get you down. You can't offend me, even if you knew me and tried really hard.

As a Reader for my 61 years, I have come to learn the writer has to develop a pretty thick skin when it comes to reader comments, there's always going to be the Grammar,Weapon,Equipment,Punctuation,Sentence Spacing,I'm having a bad day I'm going to piss on your parade, book. or effort or whatever kind of NAZI in every crowd. I've learn to over look those types of people and mark it up creative mistakes or as I like to call them writing learning lessons, to just enjoy the effort that folks like iamnobody and so many others on this site and others that I go to, just to have new content to read and with that being rambled out I wish to thank every writer on this site for their efforts to provide us readers new content as often as they do.

Sure hope this story continues. As I stated above. I felt what was going to happen before I even read it but I never once thought about not reading anymore or lashing out at the writer. It's a story and shit happens in a story. That what makes em a pleasure to read. You never know what the next chapter will bring.
Texican--I sure hope you reconsider. I have always enjoyed your comments.
iamnobody-- I really hope you reconsider. Cant believe because of one harsh comment you give it up.

It kind of threw me off guard when someone would raise a ruckus about a fictional PAW story, you know about the end of the world where bad things are expected to happen. Bad things happen even in normal real life. Life is like a bowl of cherries. It doesn't matter if they are sweet cherries or sour cherries, they are both filled with a lot of pits. In the last few years I have felt like the ball in a pinball machine, getting knocked all over because of life's happenings. But Jesus Christ is my Rock.
For the record, I loved the last dog I had. He was a yard sale special – free, but no returns. Definitely a flea bitten mangy mutt. Mostly Terrier but still a lot of other mixes in there. Loyal, loving, courageous, he thought road kill was a special gourmet treat, the older, the better. He would chase balls forever and even cars, not sure what he would do with one if he ever did catch it. He wanted outside even during the cold and snow, never sleep inside even though he was offered. Courageous – he was up to taking on anything. Stood between my feet as he growled at a mountain lion, even though the State denies they exist in my State. When I got home from work, he would run down through the yard to jump up into my arms. Not bad for a dog that only stood 12 inches high. Until the day he did that and he was only 3 inches from my nose and I discovered he had a losing battle with a skunk that day. WHEW!!!!!!

Im greeted everyday after work by 7 dogs who each push and shove to see who gets their afternoon lovin first. It makes my day and takes the stress away. I usually arrive home around 3:30 to 3:40 and the wife says at 3:20 Buttercup ( my old black dog ) goes to the front door and whines until she is let out. Rain or shine and even in the cold of winter she wants out. She sits beside the driveway where I park and waits. Has done this for many years and was never trained to do so. When she sees me hit the top of the drive she will stand and wag her tail till I park. She always lets out a little howl bark thing as if to say I missed you and lays her head on my leg for her lovin and head scratch. She is getting old and gray and when I think about her time getting closer I get all sad. Even though I will have the other children to greet me it will never be the same as seeing her waiting and wagging and getting her kisses.
Yea Im a dog person. Always have been and always will be.

An hour later after burying his dog, John walks back to where everyone is gathered around the prisoner. Zeb tells John that the prisoner is not talking, that maybe she does not understand English. He looks at the Chinese woman standing with her hands bound behind a tall fence post and her feet tied to the post.
John walks up to her until he is about 3ft away. She is ignoring him and looking like he doesn't even exist. He asks her what her name is and who sent her. No answer. Mumblings that she may not understand English. John moved his face to within a foot of hers. He said he knew that she spoke English and will answer his questions. She spat in his face and laughed.
John leaned back and wiped his face while she continued to laugh. The spittle he had wiped from his face, he now wiped off on her shirt. She had a look of uncertainty cross her face. He told her she had killed his dog. She said praise Allah you infidel.
John smiled, turned away and whispered in a man's ear, then stood in front of Ed and asked for the loan of his knife. After getting the knife, he walks back to the prisoner, extends his arm and slowly shaves the hair off it while she watches.
