Friends--The Population of the US went from 106 Million in 1920; 179 Million in 1960; 203 Million in 1970; and finally--308 Million in 2010.
The Population has grown approximately one third from 1970 until today.
Oddly enough, this figure agrees fairly well with my subjective impression, that we have about a third less elbow room; and are about one third more crowded than the citizens of 1970.
Things sure were different too, in the 50's and 60's.
Lets imagine an alternate World, where everything was identical to our World--except, that back in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis,no one backed down, and there was a medium-sized Atomic War--That America won, hands down.
There was no Nuclear Winter. There are no Freak Show Mutants running around--or Super Men--or whatever.
The main effect is that instead of the Population growing by 33%, like it did here on our World; it shrunk by about 40% or so--back to the 1920's number.
Even after a Nuclear War, these people are reasonably prosperous--because they are so much fewer.
They've kept a number of Quaint and Curious ways of doing things--so the visual aesthetic is very retro.
They have Universities, And Professors and Research Scientists--but not nearly as many as we would. (If it takes the effort of 1000 workers, to buy the time off from food production--or whatever--then a Town of 55 000 people could support the research of far more scientists than a town of 3800.)
The people have actually become far more efficient, in the years since the War. Their Scientists have also become fiendishly clever, and very good at improvising.....
They are generally behind us--but know some things that we don't.
Also, when someone invents the DVD, for instance; there's no huge rush to market it. The people may be more than pleased with VCRs, and it may be half a century before enough improvements to the system, pave the way for DVD Players to have even a slight market demand.
Its 2011 over there too-- The War is pretty much forgotten, except for its lingering effects on everything.
Now some Folks--or Single Dude, from our World--travels to their World.
Haven't come up with the central Conflict yet--just imagining the World right now.
Does it sound like an interesting place to visit?
