Just a group of old mechanics sitting around listening to clutch chatter.
If I had a story to use that in, I would have but both my muses have just about stopped musing :-(

I think that kind of stuff went away with the DynaFlush and Slip-and-Slide Powerglide.

It can still happen on any manual transmission but the current clutch facing materials are a lot sturdier stuff than was once used. Did you know that there were certain old Rolls Royce models which had a leather clutch that needed to be oiled regularly to keep the leather face supple and providing good friction? Not that I'm a great auto historian but I recently ran across www.gus-stories.org which is the collected stories of "The Model Garage" fiction series that appeared in Popular Science from 1925 to 1970. I'm currently in 1953, so I've read a bunch of them and even saved some (most are available in Word or PDF format) with an annotated title which notes the content (vacuum tester use).

Both my '70 and '71 Broncos were prone to clutch chatter. Don't recall ever experiencing it on my "newest" car, a '90 that's manual trans. Of course, none of my bikes have ever had a problem, and that's on well over 100K miles of riding. Many thanks for the link to the PS stuff.
