I like the TV weather explanation of the NWS storm warning for our area: "For this area, high winds, heavy rain, brief tornado." I think they need to define "brief". Is that in time, width or distance traveled? ;-) As long as that "brief tornado" misses us, I'll be back. --- And yes, I can see wheels turning in certain minds with a totally different explanation of "brief tornado". ;-) It's probably just me, but I read "brief tornado" and immediately thought of a twister wearing a pair of Fruit of the Looms.... Yeah, think I've been locked down too long, too!

Don't suppose anybody here's been around long enough to remember Wolfman Jack's recording of "Ain't That Strange" with the line about something being as strange as the Wolfman wearin' burlap BVDs. He come in over XERB, the Mighty 1090 with the mailing office for ordering his stuff at 8228 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, California.
We now return you to your regular programming.

I finished the bean soup with ham for breakfast. The little bit left went to the furr buddies.
The dear wife fixed a pork lion in the slow cooker, green beans and mashed potatoes for dinner. Pulled apart a section of the pork loin and covered with sugar free BBQ sauce, pork juice on the mashed potatoes and a serving of green beans were great for dinner.
Did the dishes as payment for the cooked dinner.
Dessert was a pack of Russel sugar free chocolate pecan delight with peanuts and topped that off with crackers and PB which I shared the crackers and PB with the furr buddies.
Did a little book work and spent some time outside in the sun. Great weather and not rain and just looked at the weather radar and no clouds showing for miles and miles.
Be careful out there.

Checking the news about the virus and now it seems the big 3 beef/pork factories are closing down due to some workers getting the virus. And I think one of the workers died. This, despite the fact the govt. gave them guidelines on how things should be run during this 30 day bit. Of course they ignored it. So there may be a shortage of beef & pork in the near future. Russia's booting out those Chinese which became Russian citizens back to China....and China's saying you really don't want to come back, do you? The last region of China's been hit with the virus, but what's REALLY scary is people dropping dead in the street, one while in his car on the road. Another video shows a guy shaking like he's having an epileptic attack which is one of the signs of having the virus. news.yahoo.com/tyson-says-millions-pounds-meat-151649086.html crisis, in Homestead, Florida, U.S., April 17, 2020. Edited by BI to add arrow. Marco Bello/Reuters/Business Insider Farmers are destroying vast amounts of usable food and milk because the coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible to sell. Because many regular customers are closed, producers are left with no option but to crush fruit and vegetables back into the ground, and pour milk down the drain. The USDA has a $3 billion program to buy up food and redistribute it to the needy — but industry leaders say they took so long to develop a response that it will now do little to help. USDA told Politico it had moved quickly to support farmers. Business Insider has approached the department for comment. Meanwhile the US could see unprecedented need as furloughed and laid-off workers struggle to feed their families. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Millions of pounds of food is being wasted on US farms after demand collapsed because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to multiple reports. Farmers are pouring thousands of gallons of milk down the drain, and crushing ripe fruit and vegetables back into the soil with heavy machinery because they have no way to put it on the market for a profit. The waste is due to a collapse in parts of the service industry forced to close because of the virus. It means buyers like restaurants, hotels, schools, and sports venues no longer need ingredients, which has in turn caused demand to plummet in some cases to half its regular levels, according to The Guardian. The federal government launched a program to redistribute this food, setting aside $3 billion for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to buy it up and send it to struggling Americans. However, industry leaders and lawmakers have complained that USDA failed to launch the program quick enough, leaving producers with no choice but to waste huge quantities of food, Politico reported. Surplus fruit and vegetables have been plowed back into the ground in a process known as "re-mulching." This prevents the crops rotting in the field and attracting pests.

It is sad that so much crops are being plowed back into the soil when so many need the food. Bad planning by .gov.
Now as to pork production.
So 15% of the pork production is out of production which... RESULTS IN 85% OF PORK PRODUCTION IS STILL IN PRODUCTION....
Scare tactics in use to cause a panic in the masses and shortages will happen due to panic buying.
This is pig crap....
How much of the pork being exported and imported. The following is from USDA ERS - Livestock and Meat International Trade Data
February 2020 imported 65,032,000 pounds.
February 2020 exported 658,162,000 pounds.
February 2020 pork produced 2,306,200,000 pounds. 2.3 billion pounds of pork produced February 2020.
So loss of 15% of pork production is 345,930,000 pounds which is 312,232,000 pounds less that what is exported.
Sensationalism at its worse by the MSN and .gov....
No wonder the meat counters are empty due to panic buying just as with TP....
Americans are being lied to and played....

The Virus: 30 days staying at home Day 19 thru 21
When I left Dan and his posts setting in cement, had a couple double cotto salami and American cheese sandwiches w/mayo and lettuce, some chips, dr peppers, followed by my pills. Took another nap followed by me checking the virus news. Oh sh*t....seems a couple of the homeless (L.A.) had been bitten by a rat, maybe a couple of rats. NO ONE has any idea if they (the rats) had rabies or not and of course, no way of catching those particular rats. So those homeless are now in a SERIOUS isolated area. And once the homeless passed the word that so and so might have rabies, they started leaving the shelters set up for them as they had no idea if they could of caught rabies by those who had been bitten. Thing is, someone working at the shelter called a tv station....maybe to let the public know of this new development or maybe wanting their fifteen minutes of fame. In any case, with this now being on the news nationwide, the news people interviewed people on “what to do” about the homeless who fled the shelters. Most of them could understand why the homeless had fled, but others....they were saying they should be rounded up and FORCED into these shelters using peaceful means of course. Like using tranquilizers guns and darts. After all, those people could be a danger to the public and the public needs to be protected because soon the stay at home order will be lifted. And a$$hole people are now holding public demonstrations saying it should be lifted NOW. In a way, hopefully those demonstrating get the virus and die. Nothing like Darwins law thinning out the stupid from the herd. Thing is, I saw VERY few people demonstrating with masks on.
When I woke up the next day, Dan called asking when did he want me over to work on my fence. Said let's finish your chainlink fence and the gates first, so went over there. Which took us 3-4 hours. Two legs, a cucumber and 2 roma tomatoes for lunch, followed by my pills. Figured I better call the VA to get them refilled as I was down to about 2 weeks worth and usually it takes a week for them to get them to me. As to the VA, got a recording before taking the option of getting ahold of the pharmacy. Recording says unless it's an emergency, stay away. This was something I never though of before. As to the virus, in some places it's getting “better” as in the number of people dying from it has gone down. Thing is, in Africa and countries in South America, those people are f*cked as there's NO WAY they were ever prepared for something like this. Think it was in Ecuador where the dead are stacked like cordwood in morgues and mortuaries....so f*cking full they CAN'T take any more. Not enough coffins to put the dead in and those that have coffins are now wrapping the coffins in plastic sheeting to help reduce the smell. And the dead are also just being left on the streets for the government to pick up and dispose of. And where there's a bit of bare land, people are saying f*ck you and digging graves for their loved ones. No medical equipment, supplies, etc. and now some of the doctors and nurses have the virus, with some of them dying. Just like in NYC for example. What the f*ck is going to happen should there be just a few doctors/nurses available? And nurses here are striking because they too don't have the personal gear they need NOT to get infected. Like face masks which should only be used once, are now being used for 4-5 days. Will have to check on what's happened to illegal aliens in custody and cons in prison.
Dan came over an we started putting the 4x4's into the holes, followed by me cutting up some old 2x4's to act as supports for the 2x4's that'll go between the 4x4's. Lightly nailed the new 2x4's to act as stabilizers when we pour the cement into the holes. That killed the rest of the day with me taking another nap, but this time not waking up till 21:00. Cr*p. Two cans of cream of mushroom soup with 2 cans of canned mushrooms and 3 cups of milk for a very late supper and the rest of my pills. Tired, but putting that down to doing all this work, not that it's hard labor or anything. Just not used to it. Then back to bed, but still having those weird a$$ dreams I get from some of the pills from time to time. And who the f*ck dreams or sees things in color? Or being on the net watching bits and pieces of various videos? Then trying to get off the net and can't until you realize you're dreaming. Until I was on this sh*t, I know I never did. They always seemed to be in B&W. As for last night, found myself with weird abilities, ones I don't even remember except being able to fly or jump really high/long distances. Kicking a$$ and taking names on some bad guys when Death of all people shows up, telling me that I'm his?! Replied f*ck you and the horse you're not riding with me jumping at Death and started biting him. Well, Death didn't expect this and figured this would make his job easier. Not. Death was kind of like a fine, black silk cloth and/or a foggy looking thing, also black. Death was shocked to realize not only was I able to grab him (it?), but also swallowing chunks of him/it. When he tried pulling back/out of me, I suddenly changed to a pure white kind of foggy thing myself and kept chopping and swallowing away. I ate ALL of death and right after that, woke up having to p**.
Woke up kind of late the next day (11:00?) and WAS going to get something to eat until I remembered we were having that barbeque at 13:00 at Dans place. Called Dan to see if it was still on and it was. Took my pills and taking some dr peppers, headed for his place as getting the chainlink fence was going to be a two man job. Cement had set and maybe an hour or so of getting the chainlink fencing up/tight/in place and his gates. Dogs were quite happy to have more running around room. After that, just kicking back and bs'ing. His folks came over around 12:30 and just after 13:00, everything was ready to eat. Jessica had made a salad which for some reason, had a big plate of it, along with 3 legs and 2 thighs. Drank the 3 dr peppers I'd brought, so drank 2 of the Shasta limeaide sodas he'd bought. Thing is, I did ask Daryll if he wanted to go the day before and he said no thanks. Since there was extra chicken left over, took 3 thighs for him. He made taco's out of them that night.
Dan had been checking if their stimulus check had been deposited in their bank account and it had come in. He walked to the bank to draw all of it out. So stopped at my bank, hitting the atm....my check was also now there.
-------- No, haven't gotten my check in real life. And new memes on page 2 of this thread.

"Real Life" - isn't that the new area they're working on at Disneyland? Replacing Fantasyland?
My "check" came via direct deposit and was there some days ago. Some physical checks could be a couple of months away - at one point they were looking for COBOL programmers to fix/modify/update the ancient software they use for creating paper checks to be able to print the stimulus checks. I didn't toss my hat in the ring as it's been 20+ years since I even looked at a printout of COBOL code and I wasn't interested in doing a crash course to get up to speed :-(

The wind blew hard with the rain blowing nearly sideways. The garden is soaked again, so no work in the garden for a couple of days. Anyone got their stimulus check yet? Brother got his yesterday and we figure I'll get mine next week. He gets his ss check a week earlier than me each month. Starting to hit the high 70's and he's already turned on his swamp cooler. Not me....front door's open, so is 1 of 2 large windows in my livingroom and got a fan hitting me from behind. Watering front/backyards, grass is now starting to grow. Can't wait till Game Stop open up so I can replace my 360 which gave me the red ring of death RIGHT after the shutdown started and Game Stop closed its doors until it's over. Bought a 100' ether net cord via Ebay which should arrive this week. We'll hook up our 360's to play Halo. He likes to play the game with radar on, so I just crouch and slowly sneak around. Funny thing though...the ether net cord I bought was only $3 more vs a 75 footer. He still doesn't understand why I bought the longer one. And once he's done with laundry down the street, hello Walmart. Ran out of wings AND gizzards about 5 days ago. While I like Hamburger Helper & Rice a Roni, by God, I want some nutritious meat! Also getting some nightcrawlers if they have 'em an goin' fishin' at the cooling ponds tomorrow.

We got the .gov money direct deposited on 4/16/2020. Also did electronic filing on our 2019 taxes which helps to speed up the process.
hello Walmart. Ran out of wings AND gizzards about 5 days ago. While I like Hamburger Helper & Rice a Roni, by God, I want some nutritious meat!
WillC, didn't you buy 8 packages of gizzards and several bags of wings a couple of weeks ago? You definitely like to eat meat. Meat eaters need to keep their freezers filled for having a meat attack is disturbing to the body. This is from personal experience. Haven't had deep fried gizzards for a while, but will survive until I make a trip to the store that is 37 miles away to get deep fried gizzards.
Supper tonight cooked by the dear wife was skillet grilled shrimp (a whole bag for the wife likes shrimp) in mixed veggies, broccoli, spanish Rice Roni with seasoned tomaotes and mashed potatoes. Didn't have the mashed potatoes for only one carb per meal.
Be careful out there.

The Virus: 30 days staying at home Day 22 thru 30 and lifting of stay at home policy aftermath
The past week has been busy with us getting the fence up in the front and backyards. And trees, let not forget them and the really SMELLY, rotting bluegills. Had to make ANOTHER run to Home Depot for more fence boards. At least I was good on having the correct number of 2x4's and 4x4's. However, needed to buy another box of nails for my nail gun, though not big box of 'em this time. Once we got the first fence board leveled, used two plastic spacers for the next board so the boards would be exactly the same distance apart and level. Fish slop got poured in the tree holes, followed by the trees. All together, it took us basically three days to get everything done. Figured Dan had twenty hours helping me and he tried refusing to take the money. Told him to shut the f*ck up and to remember he was helping me for free. He took the money. He heard from work that the casino might be opening before the 30 days are up and in checking the net, the Florida governor has opened some of the beaches, though they're suppose to be closed on Sundays. Whether this'll bite everyone on the a$$ in the future remains to be seen. Even though the stay at home order was to remain in place for another week or so, a$$holes seem to think it doesn't apply to them. So when I went to Sparks Marina, there were a lot more people out there and again, not many using masks or their kids. Didn't feel comfortable with so many people around, so headed for the Truckee River, thinking of fresh trout by the Budweiser plant. Sh*t. LOTS of people there, all using the picnic benches and barbeques, along with fishing in that area of the river. Hello cooling ponds. There were even some people on that section of the river which leads to the cooling ponds, including some with tents?! But at least there wasn't anyone at the ponds. Got a couple of keeper bass, so that night cooked those bluegill in aluminum foil with mayonnaise spread on them like Daryll had told me about many years ago.
Still not going anywhere except for when I need essentials such as milk, etc. Trucks have been rolling across the country, with toilet paper, etc. now so all the shelves are basically fully stocked once again. With the President ordering everything back to normal after 30 days, Dan got call from Atlantis to come back to work the day before that day to help stock the various kitchens it has, along with prepping a lot of food for the “grand re-opening”. One thing I'm glad about is Game Stop's finally re-opening its doors. Man, was I f*cked when my 360 got that ring of death because I was so used to playing Halo Wars a lot. Called the nearest Game Stop the first day the stay at home order was over to make sure they were open. They were, so hauled a$$ for it for a 360 replacement, along with another two year warranty on the rebuilt one. This was when I decided to renew my Microsoft account so I can play Halo online. Which I think now is a waste of money simply because of what's happened, not really interested in playing Halo Wars or Halo online. Gotten into more interested in being outdoors working on this place which I now understand is actually better for me as though I'm eating about the same as before, I am losing weight. With the way things were, we (Daryll and I) went to Dans to play Halo, with me using Darylls spare Xbox along with me bringing my bigger flat screen tv. Then Beau wanted to play, so he used Dans spare 360 since Dan had upgraded to a Xbox One a year or so ago. Beau THOUGHT he'd be a bad a$$ playing Halo and quite shocked when he kept getting killed ALL the time. What he didn't know was that the three of us had talked it over earlier and we decided Beau was going to be our b*tch. So if we had a choice of killing one another or him, he got killed. Knocked the stuffing out of him confidence wise. Of course, the 3 of us are dissing each other as normal while sucking down sodas and eating snacks. I even made a 18 count of eggs to make deviled eggs which Dan said were pretty good and coming from him...... There were no left over deviled eggs. Told him how I made them as he'd shown me how to correctly make that omelets earlier. As to the gardens, flowers, etc., I'd go out to lightly water everything. WAS going to hit Home Depot for raspberry bushes to plant along the backyard fence, but that parking lot was JAMMED, so I simply headed back home. The stimulus checks arrived, not that I'm going to spend any of it. Housing prices, along with prices of new or used motorhomes have dropped like a rock. With so many people basically having no money coming in for these past 30 days, they needed money for just groceries along with trying to make payments on their homes, credit cards, etc. Economists (Youtube) are saying we're in for a major economic downfall AT LEAST comparable to The Great Depression...if not worse. And during that time, 25% of the nation was unemployed. Thing is, big businesses have gotten most of the money from the business stimulus package with the mom and pop places being f*cked and looks like many will go out of business which means a lot more people are going to be out of a job and on unemployment for very long period of time.
The ENTIRE world is in a financial world of hurt. The President ordered a suspension of people LEGALLY wanting to be U.S. citizens. Some liberals tried saying this was illegal, but they learned real quick that the people were tired of their liberal bullsh*t as this country was hardest hit. Those that were here illegally were basically sent back to Mexico since that's how they entered our country, while others were put on planes and flown back to their original countries. The guard is now guarding the border and the virus is really going thru Mexico's population and it may have more deaths due to the virus than the U.S., though then there's China which is now going thru it's 3rd or possible 4th virus mutation. As far China being an economic world giant, it WAS one. A lot of nations have brought lawsuits against it for the deaths of its citizens and economic loses, not that China was going to admit it was the cause of it or going to pay anything. There's that line from the 3rd Raiders of the Lost Ark where that Crusader says that guy who drank from Christs goblet said he chose poorly. The President ordered that NO Chinese citizen could enter the United States, along with a COMPLETE ban of all goods produced in China. This even meant if wool was produced for t-shirts that WOULD of been made in Thailand for example, those products from Thailand were also banned. Thing is, once he did this, both policies were quickly followed by most other countries. China's finding out no matter what spin you put on something, a lie is a lie. And more than one citizen has shown videos of large crematoriums are being built....there's simply that many people now dying there. It TRIED cutting access to the internet, but hackers being hackers.... The President also ordered ALL China assets within the U.S. being seized until the matter of restitution has been settled. This was quickly followed by other countries. China TRIED to blackmail the U.S. since it had bought so many treasury bonds, but that didn't work either. China was demanding the U.S. pay off ALL of them immediately in gold. The President said it wouldn't until restitution was made to the American people and was NOT going to pay any more interest on those sold to China. Now China's really sucking wind money wise in hard currency as the Yuan is worthless world wide. Other countries followed suit in confiscating China's ships, etc. China followed suit by confiscating all foreign companies in its country. Yeah, they can produce stuff, but with the world no longer buying it..... And big businesses have found out the cost once again of dealing with a communist governed country. Adding to China's woes is it had been sending out defective or substandard medical supplies such as gowns, masks, etc. It says it's going to have ALL future items inspected before they're shipped, but too late to put that genie back in the bottle.
China tried sucking up to those in Central/South America and Africa and once again, the big lie blew up in their faces. A lot of African countries were hard hit by deaths and NO “immigrants” are now allowed into Europe. Ships attempting to enter Italy's ports for example were met by military forces with several ships being sunk with ALL loss of life when the ships would not turn away from Italy's ports for example. Bodies that washed on shore were taken by special hazmat teams, with the bodies being cremated and ashes scattered in the ocean. Or would it be the Mettaranian instead of calling it the ocean? Now NATO has teams which rappel onto and take over the ship, taking the ship back to what they figure was the ships original port. Because many of the people were infected, dying and dead, these ships became known as Ships of Death or S.O.D,'s. As to Muslims, guess Mohammed and God wasn't watching out for them after all, as the death toll among the Iranians simply isn't known though its government keeps saying everything's fine. But satellite images shows MASSIVE graves having been dug with what many say are massive funeral pyres and still being dug. Not only has the virus gone thru it's governing body, but more than one religious leader (mullah) also got and died from it. Wonder if they still get their virgins as they believe?
In Africa, China sent supplies, many of which were found to be defective, followed by health teams. That sh*t ended when those countries found out some of the Chinese personnel were infected with the virus. A massive hunt for those people began, with more than one being beaten to death. China couldn't pull its people out of there quick enough. Then the same in the Central and South American countries. As to Chinese diplomats, they are prisoners in their own embassies, with food delivered to them by each nation. And now, they can only have ONE embassy in a country, nor are they allowed outside of their embassy unless they are returning home. And that person can NOT be replaced. As to those still in them, NONE have asked to return to their country, another slap in the face for China's government.
Ended up buying a freezer via Craigslist, something I never thought I'd do. It's out in the patio, but got a chain and lock on it just in case someone gets snoopy. But that changed when I saw on the news that the biggest three meat producers in the U.S. have been also hit by the virus. Hit THREE Walmarts for wings and gizzards, then Winco for pork chops, hamburger and steaks. President's ordering them to stay open, but it's going to be his a$$ should ANY infected meat gets delivered after these places are sanitized. People are talking about new social behavior since this ban's been lifted. Don't think it's going to happen....I mean after all, what about those a$$holes who ignored the order BEFORE the ban was lifted and doing public demonstrations against it? And since there's NO vaccine for it yet, got the feeling the virus will not only spread, but mutate like it has in China. ------------ This is the end of this story and have also posted the end of Dwayne's story. Going back to my new Affected story/character and TRYING to finish the last chapter of The Shadow. Got 4 chapters on the new character, but not going to post anything till I have the story completed.
As to the wings, ALMOST bought 4 packages of wings instead of 2. Would of, but freezer is full. Bought SIX when I could of bought eight gizzards. As it is, gotta squish some wings/gizzards in the freezer some how. As to wings, I knock off the family pack in a week, some times less. Cook 'em either 3 or 4 at a time and gotta get busy to make ranch dressing to make them taste even yummier. As for shrimp, got a couple of bags of 'em from Walmart which I either eat as is or as scampi. Brother (Florida) will buy one of those round things of shrimp that come with dip. When he's not munching 'em down while fishing, he'll use pieces of one for bluegill bait.

Sitting here reading stories and enjoying some of the Amish Friendship Bread I just sliced - it's almost a dessert (recipe in the Recipes section).
FYI, the recipe has homework associated with it - the "Friendship" in the name is because you need starter which you typically would get from a friend. In a PAW situation, you wouldn't find yeast at the grocery store - assuming the grocery is A) open and B) not looted. The grocery we use the most (it's within a mile) didn't have yeast early on in the Covid-19 outbreak. They had restocked that two weeks ago.
There are a lot of "Make your own yeast" videos on Youtube so that might be a place to start.
You may find the bread recipe under other names.
Recipes we use frequently are on 3x5 or 4x6 index cards (no power needed) and most of them have notes from experience as ovens can vary from the indicated temperature, flour scooped from the canister is different from sifted or aerated flour, etc, etc, etc ;-)

Pretty cool to go back and read these posts. Would love updates on how folks spent the rest of 2020. And how they adhusted their preps over time.
I was laid off of my teaching job. I spent the rest of the school year doing paper work packets and survived the reaching year. It was the hardest and weirdest year of my twenty-two years of teaching. I took unemployment then worked the Census which very stressful. I am officially retired again and loving it. Still isolating, still masking up when we do our trips to town. Loving life but not the politics of the present times.
Hope everyone here is doing well.
We have lost family to CV and have other family who have long haul medical woes due to C19. Other family who took ill had light cases.
Most family members took the jab so we mask up when with them. We are not convinced to do the vaccine and limit our time out and about.
Our garden is in and we are thankful to have a huge garden.

Sorry to hear about your family loss. Youngest brothers youngest son and his girlfriend have tested positive, but don't remember if they got their shots or not. I got my 2nd shot in April via the VA. Wasn't going to do it, but talked with my dr about it. He and his nurse had gotten theirs, so figured what the hell. No reactions or anything to the shot other than a sore arm for 2 days? Still wear a mask when going inside some business, though a lot of people don't.
Never thought of doing an update on this story. As it is, doing a juggling act between Thor and Tale of Two Brothers. I've also got 2 other stories dealing with viruses.....one ala Night Of The Living Dead, the other, a kind of take on Stephen Kings book, The Stand. Another chapter of iMom gets worked on from time to time and haven't touched I Love The Night Life and my other Affected story in a LONG time.

I love Thor!
Thank you for your condolences. One of my adult nurses who worked in a care home. In July of last year she went to the ER four times over the course of two weeks. Because she was not severe enough in her symptoms they keot sending her home. After the fourth ER visit she went home and died with in an hour in her fifteen year old son’s arms. She was in good health prior to taking ill and in her early forties. Our other adult niece lived Washington DC. Also had been in good health and was a stay at home military spouse in early forties. She was hospitalized for three months, finally weaned off the respirator and passed away on the planned day of her discharge from the hospital by a sudden onset pulmonary embolism. C19 is a freaking horrendous thing to face, not knowing if you will have mild or severe symptoms and outcome.

Eyes,
My condolences for your losses.
Of course we know many people who contacted C-19. The worst was a two-week hospitalization.
We were careful, following safety protocols. We took one trip by air to check out a potential college for my son. I pulled my stash of N95 masks out and wore during each flight.
My work was deemed essential. I got most of two weeks off work, then it was business as normal.
My kids and wife were different. One works in a school, one attends college, and one in high school. They were all home, working remotely.
With my daughter’s help, we put in more garden than usual. However, as always, it came down to me to care for and the weeds made a huge impact. We picked plenty to eat fresh and froze some, but not as much as I would’ve liked.
After reading about processing plants and staffing, we decided to buy a pig and put in the freezer. We added to it in the fall after a successful elk hunt.
As well as work, I maintained most of my normal activities. I don’t go to bars, and rarely go to restaurants or movies. Their shutdowns didn’t impact me. The libraries, though closed to browsing, had curbside pickup. So I could keep a steady supply of audio books. I could still go to the grocery, hardware, farm and garden stores. The biggest impact was being around my parents, both in their nineties and pretty frail. I tried to keep distant and always wore a mask. Starting in January, I began cooking supper and delivering to them each day. But I still masked up until we all had been vaccinated.
I continued working with the youth, helping my daughter extensively with her Eagle Project. She was in the first wave of females allowed into the BSA, becoming the first female to earn her Eagle in our local Council. (Proud Papa moment there).
The Venture Crew I’m assistant advisor for is small, and we were able to continue meeting under guidelines set forth by the local health authority. We couldn’t meet indoors, but we managed. We were able to complete a wilderness survival campout. I had to brush off my old “Outdoor Survival Skills” book by Larry Dean Olsen and led the group in identifying edible plants growing around our campsite.
We also went on a 50-mile bike ride on a trial that used to be a rail bed. If you’ve read my Ashen Horse – Chad Smoke stories, it was in that region, going beside the small towns I used in the stories.
And I continued to work, not getting near enough fishing in.
My wife’s school went back to in person in the fall.
My daughter returned to school.
My son had alternating home – in person school for most of the year.
Now here we are. My daughter is staying in Montana to work, and my son will join her next month. In August, we have to pick him up from the upper half of Montana and deliver him to Tucson. We’ll get to see a lot of country in a short time.
The garden is more limited this year, and so far, the vegetables are taller than the weeds. Maybe I can keep them under control and add a lot to the freezer, but, maybe not. Or maybe I’ll going fishing more often, adding my catch to the freezer.

It is sad that so many have died and all of the BS out of DC about covid, the lock downs, failing and closed businesses, and the great amount of foreclosures and evictions that will happen in the near future due to the lock downs.
Covid has been a problem, but from indications it is no worse in total deaths than in 2019 versus deaths in 2020. Other primary causes of death (heart attack, pneumonia, cancer) are all low for 2020. The figures are being adjusted to show actual deaths due to covid which have been inflated.
This does not lessen the sadness that families have encountered from covid.

Great to read about everyone's Covid impact. I was an essential, but after the hurricane took out the major artery between Pensacola and Gulf Breeze and we all, and I mean two hour traffic jams all, had to drive around the long way, they decided we could telework. As there were three adult in my house with compromised immune systems, our high schooler stay home and did school remotely. Not optimal as I think her learning suffered but it was what it was. I was very busy but managed to work on mainly soft skills (Wilderness Survival Skills and Bushcraft), refined my EDC, got my CCW and worked on refining my grayman techniques. I am no expert, but I feel I can now go places and be relatively unnoticed. The masks help with this, but now, I am sticking out in the stores. At least my car is forgettable since I replaced it with a late model silver toyota; looks like just about every other car out there. And I don't seem to be missing all those gadgets and buttons that usually occupy the steering wheel. Recovery has been slow from the Storm; still no fence, still no replacement window or door resetting. No Dock, no seawall. Grass that was covered in salt water is coming back, but it is so slow. On top of that, there is a handful of people that Covid took from me and my family. Oh, and my Daughter at a certain large State University in Florida did get covid; she self isolated and still has a lingering cough. All her classes were remote, but she was able to get her work done still. Definitely a strange two years, beginning with our bldg getting shot up on base in Dec 2019. And it is still going. Lots of entitled people out there, shining their tail and making fools of themselves. Seems worse now. Keep plugging away everyone!

Well we are in round three with C19. Lots of cases on the reservation and in town of folks vaccinated who have the delta variant, most hospitalizations are unvaccinated and a few vaccinated. We still mask, social distance and stick to home. The garden is suffering due to the drought and the pesky blue jays. Hubby and son in law have been dropping tree and milling lumber for the kids cabin. Daughter busts her rear in the garden and I am teaching her how to preserve the harvest. Hot temps in the low 100s. Only a wee bit of smoke from the wild land fires to the east of us. May the rest of summer be full of abundant blessings for everyone.
