And the story I'm currently working on has a 'new flu' that originates in China. Be nice if I'd started posting it a few months ago - but I didn't even have the storyline then, and certainly not the meat of the story. Once again, I'm almost seeing the future ;-)

That's it, no more Corona for me! Nothin' but XX from now on, and plenty of lime so the acid helps disinfect.

Go to www.scmp.com/ and read the current info: 1700 infected in China, 55 deaths, Beijing hospitals using anti-HIV drugs to treat some patients - and more. This is rapidly getting out of control. Most of the world's laptops come from China (one city made 1/3 of the world's total in 2018). I don't have numbers on the cell phones but you know they're in the top two or three. Quite seriously, where will Walmart get clothes and shoes in six months? Will Harbor Freight and Northern Tool have tools or small gas engines? Where will your kids' backpacks for school next fall be made? Will they have rain/snow boots? The current quarantine area in China is 50 million people (twice Florida's population) and you know that an area that large has some leaks. I mentioned a leaky quarantine area allowing an infection to spread in a story - seems I was correct.

I seem to recall both Tired Old Man & Fleataxi having a couple stories like this, as well as you.... Wish you PAW writers would stop being right! Some people do describe what we write as "future history". ;-) When I was much younger, I dreamed of things before they happened. The most memorable was a trapezoidal classroom with stadium seating and the doors and chalkboards ob the longest side of the trapezoid. A few years later, I was taking a class at a local university and was in that classroom - in a building I had never set foot in before the first day of class. Perhaps that now comes out in what I write as I'm not having any memorable dreams? FYI: scmp.com reported that up to 5 million may have fled the Wuhan area before the quarantine was imposed and that there could be 1000 or more infected people in that group.

Tsk, tsk, now don't all y'all go gettin' all alarmist on us. We have it on the highest authority, with the solemn assurances of their government and ours that there's nothin' to worry about. If there was anything about which we should alarm ourselves, they'd be happy to let us know. As soon as they made it to their isolation bunkers with all available stocks of meds. And food. And beer. And ... Wait a minute!!!! They're gonna need entertainment. All right, which of you fine authors here have been promised a spot in some secret hideaway, writin' for the chosen ones? Can you wrangle a spot for myself and my darlin' bride?

Can you wrangle a spot for myself and my darlin' bride? Today, the CDC said there are 110 cases under investigation in 26 US states. Alarmist? Nah, just passing on what I see. Be sure to check scmp.com to see what Hong Kong has to say about the 2019-nCoV on their doorstep. The CDC also has their estimates for deaths from this year's generic flu, based on historic records of 6% to 8% of those hospitalized for the flu will die. This year's estimate (2019-2020 flu season) is 8,200 to 20,000 deaths. Don't you just love having a purveyor of joy in your midst? Hey, that happens when you have an old guy who thinks you should have backups for your backups. Overnight battery backup? Yep. Solar panels to recharge the batteries? Yep. Small generator? Yep. Big generator? Yep. More than a week's worth of treated gasoline? Yep. More than one way of accessing the internet? Yep.

Link to a very calm and reasoned explanation of the infection process and timing of coronavirus 2019-nCoV and what you can do to protect yourself and those you love: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA5AbqlCHucIf you don't yet know what an N95 mask is, there are links to those, safety glasses (your eyes are mucus membranes and subject to being the entry point for the virus) and gloves (Harbor Freight and Northern Toll have nitrile gloves if you other local sources don't have them).

FWIW, Amazon is nearly sold out of N95 disposable masks. Emergency Essentials is out of stock/backorder. Most of the retailers selling through Walmart.com are out of stock or no longer available. Home Depot has some available, both local stores and delivery, but they are limiting qualities.

scmp.com has the "after midnight" figures for 30 Jan and mainland China has about 1500 new cases and 42 deaths at the end of the day. Europe has 2 more cases. I have a bad allergy to ragweed so I always use an N95 mask when working in the yard. At the moment, I have 3 open boxes of those and 3 boxes of nitrile gloves plus a box in my wife's hand size. I have the wrap-around safety glasses and the chemical lab goggles with full eye coverage and the little vents on the top and bottom. Amazon calls them "splash goggles" ($7 + shipping, Ebay has them for $11 with "free" shipping): www.amazon.com/Gateway-Safety-32392-Traditional-Technician/dp/B009YNXMG8As my practical wife says, the US health spokespersons are not extremely concerned but I wonder how much of that is whistling in the dark because they have no idea how bad this might be. Anything with a 2 to 5 day survival on hard surfaces and a 2 to 5 day incubation period where people are contagious but without symptoms has great potential to walk through quarantine and spread like a California wildfire. It may pass over with no major harm done but I'm still planning to stay in as much as possible.

The latest US response is this: The United States will deny entry to foreigners travelling from mainland China to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading after declaring a public health emergency on Friday. President Donald Trump’s order will require US citizens, permanent residents and immediate family members arriving in the country from China’s Hubei province – the epicentre of the contagion – to be quarantined for 14 days starting Sunday at 5:00pm Eastern time. ----------------- Japan and Singapore have instituted similar incoming quarantines. Remember the incubation time we could still have infected people coming in for the next 48 hours. And the quarantine only affects family members coming from the province where 2019-nCoV originated. Family members from elsewhere in China will be allowed in - but not other people. Estimates are that 5 million people left the province BEFORE they started the lockdowns. The scmp.com graphic at 6PM EST shows 91 new cases in mainland China, 1 in Hong Kong, 4 in Europe and 2 in North America. www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/3048510/coronavirus-us-declares-public-health-emergencyDon't anticipate we'll be exposed but not planning on being outside our usual immediate circle of people and I'll be looking to avoid anyone else. I'll certainly consider masks, gloves and safety glasses an addition to the GHBs.

www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3048566/china-reports-outbreak-deadly-bird-flu-among-chickens-hunanChina reports outbreak of deadly bird flu among chickens in Hunan province, close to coronavirus epicentre of Wuhan Bird flu outbreak in Hunan province, which lies on the southern border of Hubei province, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak Bird flu is much deadlier than either Sars or the coronavirus, but as of yet no human cases have been reported in this outbreak. China has reported an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 bird flu in Hunan province, which lies on the southern border of Hubei province, the epicentre of the rapidly spreading coronavirus. “The outbreak occurred in a farm in the Shuangqing district of Shaoyang city. The farm has 7,850 chickens, and 4,500 of the chickens have died from the contagion. Local authorities have culled 17,828 poultry after the outbreak,” according to a statement by China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on Saturday. No human cases of the Hunan H5N1 virus has been reported. ================= The Asian Avian Influenza A comes in two varieties, H5N1 and H7N9. The article above says the H5N1 is deadly. www.who.int/influenza/human_animal_interface/avian_influenza/h5n1_research/faqs/en/Human cases of H5N1 avian influenza occur occasionally, but it is difficult to transmit the infection from person to person. When people do become infected, the mortality rate is about 60%. ========== But the current version seems to be much more capable of human-to-human transmission, based on the ever-growing number of cases. =========== H7N9 is also deadly. www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/h7n9-virus.htmDuring the fifth epidemic, from October 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 766 human infections with Asian H7N9 virusexternal icon, making it the largest H7N9 epidemic to date. As of December 7, 2017, the total cumulative number of human infections with Asian lineage H7N9 reported by WHO since 2013 is 1565. During epidemics one through five, about 39 percent of people confirmed with Asian H7N9 virus infection died. =========== Mainland China has 69 new cases since last night's report (with the 13 hour time difference, that might have been the morning report, China time). The rest of Asia has 10 new cases, Hong kong 1 case, Europe 3 cases, Australasia 3 cases, North America 2 cases. I'm just waitin' for somebody to advance the idea that coronavirus is the result of a previous strain whose mutation was brought about by Fukushima radiation. Or... or... that's it! UV rays hittin' the earth more strongly through the Freon-caused hole in the ozone layer! Or maybe they've been messin' around with DNA from a body found buried under the Great Wall. /s/ Will CDC and others set a record for how quickly they can concoct a treatment/cure/vaccine? To my mind, that'll be the way to gauge how seriously they're takin' this.
