PP2,
A quart or half gallon of Wild Turkey can cure the muse, but you will not care until the next morning....

Irish, English and Bohemian so white is the color of the day for me and sis. In my old age I have had several skin cancers removed, so its long sleeves and sunscreen on the bare spots, SPF 80. It does cut into the fishing time though.

So far, the only story that's reached a second helping is "Jack's War" but it covered a much longer period of time than most of my stories.
I had an idea for a second volume of "Accidental Family" - this one from Mike's perspective - but it never got past the first chapter.
I have a directory that's named "short-stuff" on the laptop I use for writing so I have a place for the bits and pieces that come at odd moments. While they're not long enough to be a complete story (not even a short-short story), they do pose interesting situations. The chapter of "The Elevator" with our hero waking up in the dark and in pain, was one of those short bits that might have potential ;-) I have another one (or two or three) of those "bits" and I revisit them from time to time to see if my muse has gotten creative about the past and future of that "bit".

You've made the Wilson household sound like a pretty good place to call home, sir. I agree well explained.

No matter how important I think it is for every person to be aware of the short-term and long-term possibilities around them - positive and negative - I'm not a charismatic speaker who can stand behind a podium, expound my gospel and get people to empty their wallets to the tune of $1 million to support my campaign :-( It seems a few people will part with $2.99, as Amazon continues to sell a few of my books most days ;-) Thank you to all the buyers.
If a story convinces one person to prepare better for "What if", then I've helped that person and possiblity other people around them. Even if it's just the small starts some PAW fiction stories open with "Joe bought a knock-off Leatherman, a case of water and some jerky", it's a start on "putting something back" as my grandparents would have said. My grandmother had a pantry under the stairs to the second floor of their house and I remember the shelves always being full - and I remember a group of women in the kitchen canning veggies in Mason jars and them making muscadine jelly. You think that might have warped my young mind? ;-)
Some people can't or won't accept that the current status quo of power, water, food, fuel, clothing, etc, etc isn't guaranteed. I remember the gas station lines - and the "No gas" signs - from the days of the oil embargo so I know that fuel can "go away" almost overnight. Our society's "always there" stock of foods and "Next Day Air" for almost anything else depends on oil-based fuels. Another embargo would have many (Most?) searching for the basics when the next truck didn't arrive at Kroger, Macy's, Exxon, Wal-Mart or Costco.
We have some long time friends (their kids and our kids were in middle school together and our oldest is now the parent of a college freshman - you do the math). The wife has Spina Bifida and was on crutches until she gained more weight than her hands and arms could handle so now it's a wheelchair in the house and a scooter elsewhere. The one time I tried to talk with her about being ready for a few days without power, water, etc her reply was "I'll come to your house". Only if she plans to live in the basement as I can't get her weight up the one step from the garage to the main level of the house. No kitchen in the basement but there is a full bath. She won't be coming if there is snow or ice because we're uphill from them. Or on a nice day if they don't have enough gas or he's stuck at work 30-odd miles away from home because she can't move the wheelchair that far and certainly not uphill. Her scooter? It doesn't have the range in miles to get here on a fresh charge (remember that the "uphill" part cuts the "typical range" down by 50% or more) and she'd be in the road with 35MPH or faster traffic as there are limited to no sidewalks in most unincorporated areas of the county. If power were off for a few days before she decided to try that trip, the scooter might not have enough charge to get out to the main road there (and she has no interest in spending $200-$300 for solar power to always have the scooter charged).
My better half once asked if that couple had wills and similar end-of-life documents and the answer was "No; they cost too much and we're going on a cruise next month. Will you be our executor when we die?" You won't spend the $$$ for wills and you want someone to be executor with no written documants? I think "sheeple" may be too kind a term for some people...
