Perhaps his muse encountered Liz, my previous and often flighty muse, and the both of them are off "having fun" and not attending to the jobs they are uniquely capable of?
My new muse did work out well for the current story and she's been burning through the scifi and PAW books and stories I have. I did point her here and to all the old scifi magazines on archives.org so she won't run out of reading material for a while. I thought that having her read things that inspired my imagination as a tween/teen might give her insight into how I think. However, all that scifi could lead to a space opera ;-)

Alright everyone, quit your belly aching. Here's the next chapter.
Incidently, I'd like to know your thoughts on the dilemna facing the group here. While it's only fiction now, it may be a real issue when TSHTF. Please provide your comments.
Thanks for reading and your support.

Chapter 43
The Pregnancy
Later that day Laura and Darren were in the communication center listening to the radio when Boomer radioed in that the three caches has been found and were just as Chandler had said. Laura commanded that Boomer leave the one closest to Safehaven and when he got to the Guard headquarters to tell them about the other two. They would be donated to the cause.
After finishing her conversation with Boomer, Laura reached out and put her hand in Darren’s.
“Everything okay, hun?”, asked Darren, stroking Laura’s fingers absentmindedly.
“Yeah. No. I don’t know.”, replied Laura, with a sigh, “I know Boomer and Eugene are doing the right thing for them. I just..I don’t know. It’s different not having Boomer here. And knowing that the odds are that he may not be coming back, it’s just hard. We’ve been through so much together. I mean, I don’t want to grieve for him because he’s not dead, but he’s gone, you know? I’m sorry, I know I must be sounding like a puddle of mush right now.”
“It’s okay. You’ve got a lot to process right now and you haven’t had enough time yet. It’s okay to have all these feelings swirling around in your head. Boomer and Eugene are a part of the family, our family. It’s tough to say goodbye. But you know in your heart that it was the right thing for them to do, whether or not we agree with their choice. So go ahead and be a puddle of mush, I’ll understand.”, said Darren as he pulled Laura’s rolling chair closer and put his arm around her.
As they sat there in silence, Clarice came into the room and said, “Guys, we have a problem and we need to have a discussion with all the adult members of the team about it. It’s Chelsea. I think she’s pregnant.”
Quickly the adults who were available were rounded up for an emergency meeting in the main hall. Magnum was at the LP/OP with Tara, but Henry, Martha, Missy, Clarice, Rattler, Laura, and Darren were there along with Don for his medical advice.
Clarice told them all that she had seen Chelsea throwing up and generally feeling under the weather. When she was putting Chelsea to bed, Chelsea had admitted that she was worried since she had missed her period.
“How did we miss this?”, asked Laura.
“When the kids came, we didn’t take any blood from them simply because we don’t have adequate lab facilities to test it.”, explained Clarice.
“She’s just a child.”, said Henry.
“She’s a teenager and already going through puberty if she was having periods.”, said Don.
“Is she strong enough to carry the baby to term?”, asked Missy.
“I’m not sure. She’s too young so we can’t know for certain.”, said Clarice.
“Even if she was able to carry it to term, we don’t even know who the father is. It could be one of those monsters or Simon.”, said Rattler, “How could she care for a child of rape or incest. Seeing it every day would bring back the nightmare that she lived through.”
“Do we have any medication that would force her to miscarry?”, asked Laura.
“We never planned for something like this to happen, so we didn’t stock anything.”, said Clarice.
“I..I don’t know how I feel about aborting the fetus.”, said Magnum, “After all children are a gift from God.”
“Really?”, said Darren, angrily, “You think God wanted that poor girl to be raped by those demons? You think it was His plan that Chelsea should have to re-live what they did to her every time she looked into that child’s face?”
“Now, now. This is not the time to have a theological discussion on what God’s plan is or isn’t. Being young, she may just miscarry on her own.”, said Rattler.
“Don, the antibiotics and pain medication that we gave the kids when they came, wouldn’t they cause a miscarriage?”, asked Laura?
“They may. At the same time, they may also cause fetal abnormalities. It’s too early to tell.”, said Don. Martha stood up and said, “You all bicker all you want. I’m not going to just sit here while that girl is in pain.”
Before anyone could stop her, Martha walked out of the hall.
“Look, that girl is ill, and probably scared out of her mind, right now. I think we all need to come to an understanding of what we can do so that we can help her.”, said Laura.
“Like I said, she may just miscarry on her own.”, said Don.
“There’s a big difference between may and will.”, said Missy.
“And there’s life at stake on what we decide here.”, said Magnum.
“The only life I’m concerned about right now is Chelsea’s.” snapped Darren, “She should not have to suffer knowing that the child she is bearing is could be from those evil men or her own brother.”
“Are you really ready to kill that innocent unborn child?”, asked Magnum.
“We promised to keep Chelsea safe and secure. That includes her mental safety too. So if it will help her avoid suffering every day, then yes, under the circumstances, I’m ready.”
“That’s murder!”, thundered Magnum.
“I’d rather that then see Chelsea die every time she sees that child. She’s just a child herself, for Christ’s sake!”, roared Darren.
“Both of you, enough!”, commanded Laura, “Clarice, what about Emma?”
“After I put Chelsea down, I went and spoke to Emma. She’s had her period, but I’d like to keep monitoring her, just in case.”, said Clarice.
As the discussion continued, suddenly everyone heard a young girl’s scream echo through the retreat.

Well A First off let me say thank You. Sure glad I didn't have to twitch.
Now for the situation. Sure hope things don't turn political or worse with the varied comments that might arise from your inquiry.
I agree that abortion to certain extent is murder. There are exceptions to this in my humble opinion.
1st is the health of the mother and her ability to carry term and deliver a healthy baby.
2nd is the mother willing to carry and deliver. I'm not talking about a mother having willing sex and then saying oh I'm pregnant and now I don't want a baby. Tough shit!! You played. I'm talking about the situation we have here. She was raped and or forced how ever you want to call it. In this situation it's up to the mother. Yes she is young but I think it's still her decision. There is already a conflict of whats right and wrong with the adults.
I guess the scream will tell the tale in the next chapter.
A it's your story and your decision. I'm pretty sure you already know which way it's going to go.
I'm reading your stories either way and looking forward to MOAR already.

Hi all,
Thank you for your comments. I appreciate it.
I did not intend to get political, but like I said before, when the SHTF everyone will have to face certain conditions and situations which may us to think long and hard before making a decision.
I know that in a lot of fiction, things are pretty clear cut black and white. The good guys are always good and the bad guys are always bad. In RL and sometimes in my writings, things get a little grey and murky. Sometimes the situation forces the good guys to do bad things. Nobody's perfect, we all fall sometimes.
I know that the scenario I introduced in the last chapter is controversial and I may lose some readers for that reason. I'm okay with that. I want my stories to be entertaining, but I also hope that I help the reader to think about what they would do if they were put into that situation.
I, like most of you, have my own personal thoughts and relationship with God and my own thoughts on abortion. I'm not here to preach one way or another. You can make your own decisions. If you decide to continue to walk with me through the rest of this story, that's great, I appreciate the support. If you feel that this story is going in a direction that isn't for you, I understand, no hard feelings.
Like I said when I started this story, I don't know where it's going or how it's going to get there.
Okay, that's enough for now. It's five o'clock somewhere.
A.

A,
When it falls apart, those of us that survive will have to make way to many tough decisions that we shouldn't have to make due to a lack of adequate planning by those in power....
You as a family group or even a larger group can only store so much food, firearms and ammo....
Some decisions will be beyond difficult to make but will have to be made and will be based on survival and not on morals.... You will not be able to feed the masses and deprive yours of life sustaining food.... You will not be able to defend the masses and deprive yours of the required defenses.... The bad guys will have to be dealt with on your own time and terms....
Keep on writing A for you have an insight to what is coming....
Regards,
Texican....

Chapter 44
Too Much for One Teenager
The adults had rushed out on hearing the screaming and followed the sound behind Clarice’s house. There they found Chelsea crying and screaming. She was looking towards the pile of cut wood stored behind the house.
On top of the pile sat Simon, stoic and emotionless, with the Glock in his hand pointed at his head.
Darren, being in the front of the crowd of adults, held his hand up to keep them back.
Ignoring Chelsea, he focused his attention on the boy with the gun and, trying to sound calm, said, “Simon, what’s going on here, buddy?”
“He’s going to kill himself because of me!”, screamed Chelsea.
“Can someone calm her down?”, snapped Darren, without taking his eyes off of Simon.
“Simon, tell me what happened. You can talk to me, you know that.”, said Darren, moving a step closer to Simon.
Simon sighed and said, “What’s the point, Mr. Smith? We’re all gonna die sooner or later.”
Trying to maintain an open dialogue with Simon, Darren agreed with him by saying, “Yes, we’re all going to die one day. I’m going to die, Mrs. Smith is going to die, and you’re going to die, but it doesn’t have to be today, and it doesn’t have to be like this, son.”
“You don’t get it. You just don’t get it.”, said Simon.
“I don’t get what?”, asked Darren.
“It’s because of me! It’s all because of me!”, yelled Simon, as his eyes began to fill with tears, “It’s because of me that my Mom died! It’s because of me that those men did what they did to Chelsea! It’s because of me that she’s pregnant! It’s all my fault!”
Darren took another step forward and said, “Simon, we talked about this. It’s not your fault at all. You had no way of knowing what those men would do. Nobody holds you responsible for that, Nobody.”
“You don’t understand! I’m supposed to protect her! I’m her big brother! I’m supposed to take care of her! All I’ve done is screw everything up! She’s better off without me!”, screamed Simon, the tears falling in big droplets as he spoke.
“You’re my big brother! I need you, Simon! You’re all I have left! Please don’t do this! Please don’t leave me! I need you!”, screamed Chelsea, through her wails.
While Chelsea was screaming, Darren took the opportunity to take a few more steps towards the woodpile. “See Simon, Chelsea needs you.”, said Darren, calmly, as his hand touched the edge of the woodpile, “We all do. As a matter of fact, since it’s just us two talking, I thought you might want to know that I sort of think of you like a son. Would you do that for me, Simon? Would you be my son?”
“No, I’m not good enough to be anyone’s son.”, said Simon, calming down a little, “You deserve better than me.”
“In my eyes, there’s no one better than you for me, Simon.”, said Darren, inching closer to the boy, “You remember when you asked me for that gun, do you remember what you said?”
“No.”, said Simon, softly.
“You asked who would protect the kids if all the adults were dead. That’s the reason why you wanted the gun. Do you remember that?”, asked Darren, now within an arm’s length of the boy.
“Yes, I remember.”, said Simon, sniffling.
“You have an important role to play here, Simon, and it’s my role to help you get ready for that. But you’ll only be able to do that if you’re still here, son, so please give me that weapon.”, said Darren, holding out his hand.
“No, it’ll be too hard. I won’t be able to do it. You can get David to do it. I’m not that important.”, said Simon.
“That’s where you’re wrong son. You are important. You’re important to Chelsea, to Mrs. Smith, to Mrs. Jackson, to me, to everyone here. You’re with family here and family looks out of each other. I promised that I would protect you with my life and that hasn’t changed. Come on, son, give me the weapon. I promise you we can work through this, like a family.”, said Darren.
“But what if I fail? What if I can’t do what you need me to do? I’ve screwed up everything already”, asked Simon.
“And that’s why we’ll work on everything together, you and me. Please, Simon, give it to me.”, said Darren, softly.
Simon paused and then slowly lowered his arm. He handed the weapon to Darren.
Taking the gun, Darren reached out and put his arms around the crying boy. “It’s okay. It’ll all be okay, son.”, whispered Darren.
Taking Simon down off the woodpile, Darren motioned to Chelsea who ran and put her arms around Simon.
Together the siblings hugged each other and cried.
Darren released the magazine from the bottom of the Glock and popped the round out of the chamber before putting the weapon into his waistband.
Laura came up to him and gave him a big hug and said, “I’m so proud of you, handsome.”
Still holding Laura in his arms, Darren turned to Clarice and said, “Can you please pack up Simon and Chelsea’s things for us? We’re taking our kids home.”

Wasn't expecting that. Nice chapter A. Much appreciated.
texican made some good points in 1085. When SHTF we will all be making decisions that will make or break us. When I think about how it will be and what kind of decisions will have to be made for survival I get chills. The wife says I'm cold hearted when it comes to some things and I'm a bit greedy when it comes to other things. Things in life have made me that way. Maybe in a SHTF situation it will help me in making the right decisions. Who knows !!
A You keep writing the way you see it and feel it. I really enjoy your work and will always read as long as you are writing.

Hi all.

Chapter 45
Leaving Things to God
“Simon, this will be your room”, said Laura, showing the kids the guestroom, “And Chelsea, your room will be directly the hall from us.”
Simon and Chelsea were both quiet upon seeing their rooms, so Darren suggested, “Hey, for the time being, if you both want to share Chelsea’s room, that’d be okay with us.”
Breathing a sigh of relief, Chelsea said, “Thank you, Mr. Smith. I’d like it if Simon shared my room with me, for now.”
“It’s not a problem with me, if it isn’t one for Simon.”, replied Darren, “And if we’re going to be living together under one roof, I’d rather that you call me Chad.”
“And you can all me Cassie.”, added Laura, “I like that we’ll be just across the hall from each other.”
“Why don’t you put your things away in the closet and chest of drawers. Cassie and I will give you some time to get settled. We’ll call you later to help with dinner.”, said Darren.
As Laura and Darren were turning to leave, Simon spoke up and said, “Chad, did you really mean what you said earlier?”
Darren walked up to the boy, stroked his head, and put his hand on his shoulder before saying, “Every word, son.”
He looked at Chelsea and said, “That goes for you too, sweety.”
After leaving the children to their room, Laura pulled Darren into the master bedroom and shut the door. Pulling him close, the good-looking blond with the green eyes pulled her husband close and gave him a deep kiss.
“You are the best, just the best and I want you right now.”, she whispered in his ear while wrapping her legs around him.
“Hun, I don’t think any man could resist an invitation like that, but the kids are right next door and this is their first night with us. They’ll think we’re sex maniacs or something.”, Darren whispered back.
“Well, we are, aren’t we?”, asked Laura, kissing his neck.
Darren chuckled and said, “True, but we don’t need them knowing that, just now. Let’s wait until they’re asleep, then we can enjoy each other.”
“Promise?’, asked Laura as she returned to kissing his mouth.
“Try to stop me.”, came the reply, as Darren released himself from Laura.
Laura sat down on the bed, fanned herself with her hand, and said, in a mock Southern accent, “Goodness me, sir. I do believe you’ve given me the vapors.”
Darren smiled and said, “I think I need a long, cool glass of water and so do you. Why don’t you rest a spell, Ms. Cassie, while I bring that up for you?”
Laura giggled and laid down on the bed and Darren left to get the water.
While filling up the water glasses, Darren heard a knock on the front door and went to check on it.
Opening the door, he saw Martha standing there with a bag in her hand.
“Hi Martha.”, said Darren, holding the door open for the older woman, “Come on in.”
“Thank you, Chad.”, said Martha entering the house, “Clarice told me that you brought Simon and Chelsea to live with you and Cassie here.”
“Yes, under the circumstances, we felt it was the right thing to do.”, replied Darren.
“I heard about Simon. That poor boy.”, said Martha.
“Oh, hello, Martha. Is everything okay?”, asked Laura, coming down the stairs.
“I’m fine, Cassie. I just came to talk to Chelsea about the situation she’s in.”, said Martha.
“I’ll call her down here or we can take you up to her room.”, said Laura.
“Maybe it might be best if we go up to her room.”, said Martha.
Laura and Chad led Martha up to the second floor. Laura knocked on the kids’ open door and said, “Chelsea, you have come company.”
“Hello Chelsea, Simon.”, said Martha.
“Hi Mrs. Wilson.”, said the two youngsters in unison.
“Chelsea, Mrs. Wilson came to speak with you about the pregnancy. We’ll give you two a bit of privacy while you talk.”, said Laura.
“No, please don’t go. I want you to be here, all of you. I don’t want to hide anything from you, Chad, or Simon. Please stay.”, said Chelsea.
“Okay, we’ll stay.”, said Darren, “Just know that no matter what, we won’t judge you about anything. I hope that’s okay with you, Martha?”
“I don’t have any problem with it.”, said Martha, sitting on the bed, next to Chelsea.
Putting her arm on Chelsea’s back, Martha said, “I know this pregnancy is scary, I do. I’m not sure if anyone has talked to you about how you feel about it, so tell me, how are you feeling?”
Chelsea looked down at her hands and thought for a long time before saying, “It isn’t right, Mrs. Wilson. I’m only thirteen. I’m too young to have a kid of my own.”
“Yes, you are young.”, said Martha, “but in my great-grandma’s days, girls your age were getting married and having children of their own. Is there anything else bothering you?”
“It’s just…It’s just, well, I always thought that I’d be older, and married to a great guy, and have a good career, and the baby would be made of love when we were both ready.”, said Chelsea, still looking at her hands.
“That’s a very wise way of looking at things, Chelsea.”, said Martha, “But, unfortunately, that’s not the way things turned out, is it?”
“No, it’s not.”, mumbled Chelsea.
“If you have the baby, do you think you could love it?”, asked Martha.
“I don’t know, I just don’t know. I mean, I know that a mom’s supposed to love her kids, but I feel like every time I see the baby, I’ll be thinking of those men.”, said Chelsea.
“Chelsea, you’re young and have been through a lot, but I have one more question for you. The choice is yours and yours alone. Whatever you choose, we will all stand by you, no matter what. Do you want to keep this baby?”, asked Martha.
“Mrs. Wilson…Mrs. Wilson..”, stammered Chelsea, before bawling into Martha’s arms.
“It’s okay, child. I’m here for you. We’re all here for you.”, whispered Martha.
“No.”, said Chelsea, crying into Martha’s shoulder, “No, I don’t want to keep this baby. I know…I know..I know that makes me a bad person, but I can’t, I just can’t. I’m sorry. I’m bad.”
“Hush child. You’re not bad. No one would every think you were bad after what you’ve been through. We all only want the best for you.”, said Martha, drying Chelsea’s tears.
“Aborting a baby is a sin and against God. That’s what we were taught.”, said Chelsea, calming down.
“Hmm, that’s a tough one.”, said Martha, “If you don’t’ have the baby, that’s a sin against God, but if you do have the baby then you might not love it like a mother should. Yes, my dear child, that is a tough one. I tell you what, why don’t we leave it up to God?”
“What do you mean?”, asked Chelsea.
“Well, I’ve brought some things which can help to induce a menstrual cycle. Oh, nothing harmful, just parsley juice mixed with pineapple juice, fried sesame seeds with honey, and aspirin tablets. Why don’t you take them? If God wants you to miscarry, you’ll miscarry, if He doesn’t, then you won’t. Is that fair?”, asked Martha, stoking Chelsea’s hair.
“You mean I won’t have to choose and so it won’t be a sin, will it?”, asked Chelsea.
“No child. It will be up to God, but you’ll have to live with His choice. Are you prepared for that?”, asked Martha.
Chelsea nodded.
“Okay, but before I give you these things, do you think you can take a few minutes to pray with me?”, asked Martha.
Chelsea nodded.
“Actually Martha, it has been a pretty trying day for all of us. Would you mind if we all joined in the prayer?”, asked Darren.
“This is your family, and these are your kids. You should all be praying together.”, said Martha, with a smile.
The five together got on their knees in a circle in the bedroom and joined hands.
Martha said, “Our father, who arth in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. We beseech you now in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, to help us in our time of need. Please watch over Chelsea and the difficulty that she is in. We leave the choice up to you, our God. You know what is in our hearts and what is right. Your will be done. We asked that You also watch over Simon. We ask that You take up his burden and give him the strength, courage, and peace that he needs. We also ask that You keep Your blessed hand over Cassie and Chad. Please give them the wisdom and fortitude to provide guidance and protection to these young people. You are the one true God. You live in our hearts. Yours is the glory everlasting. Please watch over us, protect us, and deliver us from evil. Amen.”
The family all said “Amen.”
“Now, Like I said, I’ve brought a few things for you.”, said Martha, rising to her feet, and taking the items out of the bag.
She put the large jug of pineapple juice with parsley on the side table followed by a glass, the bowl of fried sesame seeds with honey, a spoon, and finally the bottle of aspirin.
“I want you to take a glass of the juice between meals along with a spoonful of the sesame seeds, and six aspirins.”, said Martha.
“If I miscarry and God doesn’t want me to, won’t He be mad at me”, asked Chelsea.
Martha kissed Chelsea on the head, smiled, and said, “Sweet child, do you really think some juice and a few aspirin will stand in the way of God’s will, if He wants you to have the baby?”
“Thank you, Mrs. Wilson.”, said Chelsea, pouring herself a glass of juice.
“No problem, dear. I have to go now, but I’ll come by tomorrow to see how you are.”, said Martha, heading towards the door.
“Can you stay for dinner?”, asked Darren.
“No, I couldn’t. Henry’ll dirty every dish in the house getting himself something to eat if I’m not there, so I better get going.”, said Martha with a chuckle.
