On the FAR west side of Reno, there's Cabela's and EVERY time I go there to pay my credit card off, there's ALWAYS Calif. plated cars/trucks in the parking lot. Come the weekend, at lest half of it's full of 'em and the lot will hold about 400 or so vehicles? Now I could pay my bill online, but then I wouldn't know what they had that I didn't know I needed.
Remember the ammo shortage after the Sandy shooting with none to be found anywhere? I was running to Haywards 5 days a week and could usually hit 2 Walmarts on the way back, some times 3. Either Calif. law or Walmarts policy at the time (still is?) was NO ammo could be sold until after 08:00 and none after 23:00. This worked great for me as I'd arrive at the first Walmart around 07:30 and be first in line to find out if they had any or not. And the people I dealt with did NOT keep a stash in the back for themselves either. Got to know more than one person in line and a couple of times if I and others had bought the max amount allowed, the last guy or two would be empty handed. Asked everyone to take X amount of ammo, this way everyone got something. That worked out well except for 1 A hole who said he needed everything he could to take his boy shooting. The last guy was going to leave empty handed, till I told him I'd sell him some of my stuff for what I paid for it, rounded up to the nearest dollar. He was a happy camper. What goes around, comes around as a week or two later, first in line an A hole in last. The guys I knew how we worked things out before and were ready to do it again. I said no, explained what A hole did earlier and we bought max boxes of ammo, leaving A hole empty handed.
I was actually getting more ammo this way than many preppers I knew could get. I'd post a note on their website, saying I got this much ammo and it's so much a box which included sale tax and rounded up to the nearest dollar. And no, not one person could buy it all from me either. I had bought a Ruger P89DC 9mm pistol from Cabela's and could NOT find ANY 9mm ammo. Cabela's couldn't even toss in a free box of it when I bought the pistol. But posted my cry on the website and able to buy 2 boxes....1 to shoot, the other as backup.
Now remember the ban on 30 round mags in Calif.? More than once I've talked with guys from Calif. who are buying 'em by the dozen. When the ammo shortage stopped, a Calif. guy asked what was the ammo limit. When I said none, his eyes kind of bulged out like a stepped on frog....and proceeded to load twelve boxes of 500 rounds each of .22LR. With this license bs, no doubt they will be at Cabela's, Walmart, etc. here in Reno in droves. And every time I see a video about this by a Californian, I thank them for coming to Reno to spend their money which really helps our states economy.
Posting these links because it gives me ideas about future stories and why the people have turned rebellious. And hopefully, others be thinking the same way and start writing their stories to post here.

I got inspiration from a series of faces at church (the pastor's four daughters - not that often that you see an entire family where there is no question who the parents are) and they were the jumping off point for "Jack's War", using the premise of "What happens if a child is just a source of income?"

Did they pass some kind of law? Will anybody pay any attention to it. Honestly, I haven't bothered to read the thing. Are they gonna arrest me for havin' ammo if'n I haven't been background checked? Hose 'em.

Yes, this ammo law is becoming law within the next few weeks at the most and places will NOT sell you ammo without this background license check any more than they will sell you a gun without a background check. Think the background check costs $25 and is good for one year, though not really sure about that...it may be good for several years. But now the state will KNOW how much ammo you've bought in Calif., as if it's any of their business. As to owning ammo now, this law doesn't affect those, but only if you buy any more in Calif. after the law goes into effect. One thing I haven't checked is if you can buy ammo out of state and have it shipped to you. Remember the news when THOSANDS of 30 round magazines were temporarily ok'd for mail order purchase for just a few days, then banned once again? Walmart's working on some sort of ammo policy on it via the video I saw. This is why I think a bunch of people from Calif. will be hitting Cabela's, etc. in the Reno area. And what about those who hit Vegas? And I haven't heard anything about any kind of penalty (financial or jail time) for anyone buying ammo in Reno, then selling it to friends in Calif. for example.
As to the other video, illegal aliens now can get free medical care paid by the taxpayer. Read comments on that one, with some guy paying $600 a month either for himself or him and his wife. But those who broke the law sneaking into the U.S., get it for free?

Fifty-odd years ago, someone I worked with at a local TV station headed to California after his (somewhat unpleasant) divorce. Not long after, he called me to tell me that I should move there because people with my skills were making twice as much there as in Tennessee. I couldn't justify going then and I have even less interest in going there now.
Perhaps the border wall should turn north and go between CA and NV? Not sure where it should turn back west or if it should just extend on up to Canada...

Well, let's be honest....I LIKE stirring the sh*t. Just wrote to the governors (Calif.) office requesting a list of those who voted for/against this ammo law. And couldn't believe the hoops they want you to fill out. I gave all correct info, except for one thing: my phone number which is none of their damn business. However, since it was a required field, gave them the Nevada sex abuse hot line. Think next time it'll be either a STD hotline or dial a prayer. Anyone remember the last one? Will let everyone know when/if I get a reply.
I grew up in Calif. from the day I was born at Norton AFB, with side trips to Bitburg, Germany and Homestead AFB, Florida. From Florida back to Calif. till 1971. The Calif. I grew up in I simply don't recognize. As to my run to Hayward, bought ammo for a couple of guys working the warehouse there either thru Walmart or Cabela's back when there was a shortage of it. I've talked with guys at Cabela's about this new law and they're disgusted too...while stocking up on LOTS of ammo.

In IL. You have to show your FOID card to buy ammo, so were not too far behind, but they don't record any amount. Cook county, think Chicago< has added a tax on ammo though of 1 cent per shell on 22 and 5 per shell on centerfire. Just another reason to make Chicago it's own state. I would move if I could.

I'll have to check out the new Calif. law a bit closer. It may be possible it doesn't record the amount you buy, but now that you're in their data base due to the required background check card..... And there's NO doubt in my mind that the govt. being what it is, it'll soon want to know when, how much/what caliber you've been buying. It's a known fact that the govt. has spied on the people without cause or a warrant. Remember the Patriate Act? It's still in effect. And everyone should know by now how the govt. LOVES to gather info on people....think FBI, NSA and Homeland Security. Here's a link that I found about it: www.quora.com/Is-the-USA-PATRIOT-Act-still-in-effect-as-of-April-2016Scroll down a bit and there's a 2018 reply to it. And because of Calif. ammo law, I can't buy ammo there any more?! You also can NOT order and have ammo shipped directly to your home as before. It now must be sent to an authorized ammunition vendor or someone with an FFL. Wonder how many Californians know this and wonder what a FFL costs? Link about this: www.pewpewtactical.com/californina-ammo-laws/

Back during the ammo, I stopped by Cheaper than dirt and they had 22 ammo, which I bought a lot....
When I went back a week later the price had nearly doubled....
Buy ammo when you can for the shelves may be empty or the price may have gone way up....
During this same time, I would stop by Walmart to check on ammo and way to often they would be out, and one time late at night, I went by the Walmart in Durant and they had ammo, but a limit, and the young woman behind the counter told me to leave the counter and come back and she would sell me additional ammo which I did and wiped out the supply....
Some counter people understand....

"> Been there; done that :-( But my comments about the computer had LOTS more symbols in it ;-) Did that enough times (twice) to learn to take the two or three minutes required to backup the current version - and backing up is now a habit. As iffy as my muse has become, I can't risk losing anything she offers. Remember that there are some cloud storage systems that are free, at least for small amounts of data. Even in Word, the longest of my stories is only a megabyte or two and that works well with free storage, which means you have an offsite backup copy that fire, flood or tornado at your location won't affect.

And that was the problem....for some reason thought I had been saving everything to the thumb drive. And I had...kind of, sort of. Been working on 4 other stories and they were ALL saved thru out this month, EXCEPT for the 11 pager. I also learned to always have TWO thumb drives as backups just in case. I also lost ALL my reference material which I had carefully retyped to add to my story, so going back now to the net to redo this.

Losing the references hurts because of the time and effort required to find it again - IF that site is still online, which I have encountered more than once and sometimes you must phrase a search "just right" for the search engine to find it again. That was something I encountered trying to again find a reference buried in 40 years of archives of a technical magazine - I knew it was there, just spent two hours getting the search phrase exactly correct. I have that tidbit saved to a separate file on the laptop because it might be be there in the future.
There's not a lot of interest in a vibrator powered 140 watt AC power source with internal battery from 1957 - unless you happen to have one in the basement: a Cornell-Dubilier Sportsman Senior Powercon Model 12SS14 in a metal case with room for a car battery of the era (narrow version of a Group 22 or 29) and sturdy handles on the case so a strong man could carry it ;-) In the days before serious portable tools with NiCD, NiMH or lithium batteries, being able to power an electric drill with a semi-portable AC power source was a big deal if you wanted to install a window A/C in a house before power was turned on (1966).
For text items online, you can use the mouse to select then copy and paste into Notepad (or whatever) so you don't have to type it all - definitely prevents "fat fingers" getting your copy wrong... If you want the entire page, there are free "Print to PDF" programs so you can "print" a webpage to a PDF and have it readable in the future regardless of changes in browsers.

I did recovery of a home PC for a friend and their only complaint was how long it took. I should have given them the brochures from one of the data recovery companies with their "Starting at $1000" price list. However, they got a new (and faster) hard drive with the OS and all their software installed and all their pictures and videos recovered and ready to go for a lot less than that. If you've ever seen the clean rooms and the equipment they use to recover a damaged hard drive, you would understand the reasons for their prices. If they don't have the proper fixture for a specific hard drive, they have to acquire/build that and the clean rooms are to the same standards as the ones where new drives are assembled - including the pollen-level air filters, the coveralls and the hairnets and beardnets. I understand the reasons for the $$$$ prices - I just don't have any data that's sufficiently valuable to incur those costs to retrieve it. Better to have backup storage devices...

The 2nd American Revolution Part 5, Chapter 1
Bounce, tumble, roll....more pebbles coming down the mountainside. When you saw Abraham Woodhull, you'd see a most unusual looking 13 years old boy. At 13, he was 6' 2” (his father was 5' 7”, mother 5' 1”), thin and gangly, looking more like a more homelier version of Icabod Crane in The Headless Horseman, President Abraham Lincoln or that actor Alan Alda. Add to this, was his rather shaggy hair which looked like it had never been combed. But unlike those people, girls had no interest in him as he was thought to be “weird, strange, off, etc.” for several reasons. Due to his shyness, one was his lack of social skills with girls. Another was lack of physical coordination, being laughed at by many because he was like a new born beagle always tripping over its own feet and ears, so he became the butt of many jokes by others at school at the cost of personal pride. It didn't help that one leg was shorter than the other by 1/2 of an inch, which required him to wear a special shoe for that one leg. But everyone has secrets. Abraham's was RC cars and airplanes, along with chemistry, military and social history. Because he was into RC, he got into electronics wanting to know how they worked and could be improved such as adding speakers and cameras to much smaller vehicles. As in 1/35th scale trucks, construction vehicles, etc. He was quite apologetic to his mom when he made a spider 1/2 the diameter of his hand, with articulated limbs. What REALLY scared her was when she heard a voice coming out of this “spider” which said it was an alien being from another world with others soon to follow to conquer their world. She beat it to “death” with her broom.
His one, main tormentor was William Franklin Beedle, Jr. whose father was also William Franklin Beedle, with the two of them known as Big Bill and Little Bill. His father was chief of police and ruled the town like it was his private domain. More than one complaint of “excessive force” was filed again him and several other police officers, with each being “investigated”, but never any charges being brought. What helped was the police cars and police didn't have cameras, so it was always a case of he said, she said. Abraham never said a word about being bullied because he some how knew nothing would change and perhaps make it bad for his folks.
At the age of 7, he was given a basic, child type chemistry set for his birthday. When he turned 9, it was a basic electronics set where you assembled a radio. By 13, he was performing experiments on both at pre-college level. He made mistakes of course and after the first one in his bedroom (a minor fire which was put out by Dad and their fire extinguisher), this was when his father bought him a 12x16 foot shed from Home Depot which resided in their backyard. The more he got into electronics, RC and chemistry, it was like he had a monkey on his back, which is why he got a newspaper route of just over 100 people, 7 days a week. While kids made fun of him, his customers appreciated his service as ALL his newspapers were either delivered on someones porch or inside the mail box of a business when possible. He also learned NOT to show how smart he was as other kids resented the fact and retaliated by smashing all the spokes on his bicycle while at school one day. So his grades dropped from A+'s to C's, with an occasional B which he didn't mind because after awhile, he knew more than what the teachers were teaching. More than one librarian at the local community college thought and believed him when he told them he was waiting for someone to pick him up after they got out of their class. Being quiet and keeping out of sight, they quickly forgot about him being there. Then problem was he couldn't spend the hours needed in reading and understanding what he was reading, so he started borrowing those books from the college library, with them stashed in his small pack. He'd of checked them out like he should of, but because he wasn't a student there.... So he'd get the book(s) he wanted, put them in his backpack, then act like he'd gotten a phone call and that someone was waiting for him outside and thank you very much for letting me stay here.
So he had every intention of just drifting along until he finished high school. That changed when John Henry was murdered. John Henry had been with him his entire life, so much he couldn't EVER remember NOT having him around. Of course after that second fire and minor explosion in the shed, John Henry REFUSED to enter it ever again. Even attempted bribes of a cookie (dog biscuit) or an uncooked juicy beef rib bone (that mom surely wouldn't miss) wouldn't work. And John Henry was ALWAYS there for him. It didn't matter if he was having a bad day at school because of the bullies, John Henry was there to listen. When his appendix started going out on him, John Henry never left his side until his parents realized Abraham had more than a stomach ache. When they went fishing at one of several ponds in the area, it was no problem putting John Henry in his handlebars newspaper basket and off they'd go with with John Henry's big ears flopping in the breeze and giving off a slight howl at the joy of the wind in his face and his tongue flopping outside of his mouth.
Then came the day he came home from school with no John Henry at least trying to run out to greet him. He knew John Henry was getting old and eventually, he would die as his father had explained to him a few years ago. That's when he thought that maybe this was that day, with his parents waiting to tell him. His parents were waiting for him, telling him John Henry had passed a few hours ago and even so, it was still like being hit in the chest with a sledge hammer. When he asked where he was at, his father said after his mom had called him at work, he came out and buried John Henry. That he didn't think Abraham would mind with John Henry being buried in one of Abrahams pillow cases from his bed. There was a space between a tree that John Henry used to doze by while Abraham worked on his chemistry projects in his shed. Seeing the brown dirt was like looking at a raw wound in Mother Earth. He stayed by his grave, trying to hold back the tears, but it was too much. Then it was being racked by the pain and loss of his best friend he'd known for much of his life. When it was over, he got up and turned around to see him father and mother standing there and they too had been crying, something he hadn't noticed. His father said it's time to finish his grave as all I did was dig it. Together, they went to the garage and with some boards, paint and a brush, made a cross for John Henry with his name, the month, day and year they first met and when he died. After that, it was gathering small rocks that lined their driveway to make an outline of his grave. A month passed before Abraham found out that John Henry hadn't died of old age.
His friend Billy Joel (no relation to the singer) told him how he'd seen Beedle Jr. give something to John Henry who was never able to pass up a treat, unless it was attempt to get him to get in Abrahams shed. That's when Abraham started remembering stories about Jr. as in the time he was suppose to have “accidentally” run over a neighbors cat with their riding lawnmower. How people around town found their pets dead, many showing signs of torture or being burned alive. And it always seemed Jr. happened to have been in the neighborhood before their pets disappeared with the pets sometimes being found, most of the time, not. So he started asking his few friends who started gathering information on the father and son. Seems the mother wouldn't be seen for periods of time, but gossip being what it was in any town, it was reported she had bruises that no amount of makeup could hide and wore sun glasses even on dark or cloudy days. Jr.'s younger sister missed a lot of school, but not quite enough to have a social worker check on the home situation. Then Jr. got caught beating a puppy with a large tree limb, but this time it was recorded and things started hitting the fan. Senior tried covering it up, but the SPCA was called, then with the police acting like they had been, the FBI came in to investigate civil rights violations. The thin blue line did it's normal thing: we didn't see anything, hear anything, don't know anything.
More answers from friends which was when he also heard about dogs and cats dying in agony. Several pet owners actually had autopsies performed, where it was discovered hamburger, wet dog and cat food had ground glass, arsenic or some anti-freeze mixed in with it. As far as Bill Jr. went, he was court ordered to see a local psychiatrist, who was quick to say after some counseling sessions with him, that Bill Jr. was “cured” and no danger to society. Notice it was a danger to society, but NOT any animal Bill Jr. might get his hands on. This psychiatrist was related to Big Bill as being some sort of cousin. Thing is, Bill Jr. was bragging how when he turned 18, he was going to become a policeman just like dad and when dad retired, you KNOW who's going to be the next chief of police, don't cha? Then his dad bought him a used 4x4 Jeep and would of hit Abraham who was on his bike that day, if Abraham hadn't swerved at the last second. Bill Jr. laughed, saying that's what you road hogs get as he drove away. And animals kept disappearing. That's when Abraham said enough and started making plans, which would bear fruit on graduation day from high school. For this, the shed was not a safe place to try his experiments, so he'd ride his bike to the local woods to try them out. He brought a small fire extinguisher which was good thing as his experiments caused some fires several times. Then it was also spending time in checking out his targets habits and since he delivered newspapers, he quickly learned what habits the police had. Much to many of their misfortune.
First to go was Bill Sr. on the day everyone was to graduate from high school. Home made C-4 made in his shed and strapped to a small RC car was driven under Bills Sr.'s car just as he was getting out of it at the police station parking lot. That took care of him. The RC battery supplied enough “juice” to set off the C-4 upon command. A snake without a head is just going to flop around Abraham figured. He casually pedaled his bike down the street afterwards, delivering his newspapers as if everything was normal. Only thing different about today's “deliveries” was his wearing a backpack. Forty-five minutes later and almost done with his route, it was Bill Jr.'s turn, who had his Jeep explode when the ignition was turned on at home. There WAS talk of canceling graduation ceremonies, but parents and students raised so much h*ll, the ceremonies proceeded. Within the next week, 7 more cops were killed, with the FBI and Homeland Security investigating because they knew this was some sort of terrorist plot. They just didn't know what group of people was doing this or why. They talked with the same people as before, but since Abraham had never been talked to by either agency, they didn't bother him this time either. Now when the first 2 police were killed at home, the rest started being more careful as in checking their private vehicles BEFORE starting and driving them. The others? They never thought of a kamikaze type air attack using an RC airplane while those cops were parked behind a billboard on a road which was the perfect place for a speed trap for out of towners. Or an RC car being driven under their police car when they got inside of it and getting ready to drive off to enjoy their free morning coffee and doughnuts. Thing is, the FBI and Homeland Security should of realized one thing: while their were many cops from different cities and states paying their respects, the ONLY people at the funerals was the mayor, his family and families of the killed cops.
With so many violent deaths, the FBI and Homeland Security came up empty handed as Abraham had bought everything he needed via many different shops online. Even though he had spent a lot of his newspaper money for his RC parts and chemicals, he still had much left. Not enough for a “real” college, but enough to go to the local community college and after the first year, two things happened. He discovered journalism and because he knew so much about chemistry and electronics, his two professors wrote a letter to a “real” college where Abraham was offered a partial scholarship which he accepted. College was entirely different than high school, with the classes a bit harder, but with lots of studying, he graduated. But now, his degree was in journalism, with him taking a job in Chicago. Where once again, he discovered blatant city government corruption, police there were also “dirty” in deliberately violating peoples civil rights and then, there were the drug dealers. But that's another story, for another time. -------------- Yes, this chapter is out of sequence, but better something, than nothing, right?

My previous muse would sometimes deliver a chapter or two that was weeks ahead of the rest of the story. Sometimes it works to post it; other times, posting it would confuse me so I flag it "future". Depends on what "goodies" are in that chapter...

Abraham should consider himself lucky that he didn't get broomed rolling on the floor laughing....
Well Abraham does have a knack of bringing justice to the the bad guys....
Now we only need moar to allow us to see where this is going with Abraham in Chicago....
Thanks WillC for the chapter even if has been weeks if not months since the last chapter, but who is counting.... A chapter is a chapter regardless of when you get it, like getting laid, better than not getting it....

Yeah, I know it's been a LONG time since posting another story under this thread. Thought of continuing with what happens in Chicago, but figured better to post something instead of letting more time go by. Besides, I can always put it down as chapter 5, part 2. As it is, got 4 other stories of at least 3 pages on each. And been working on The Shadow's story.
