Dillon wasn't in a rush in this relationship. Over the next several weeks the extent was handing hands, hugging and an occasional kiss. Rahab hinted at wanting more but Dillon wasn't ready to have her move into his bed. They had long talks about what they would want in a relationship. He made it clear that he was looking for a committed, lifelong relationship. One where they would grow old together in a loving union, not forsaking the other and going off with someone else because they gave you butterflies in your stomach. He said he would like children. Now here is where Rahab hesitated, then with a fearful look on her face, told him that in her past, as part of the business, she had been injected with birth control that was said to last a lifetime, but they were re injected every year as a precaution. She was searching his eyes when she said that and watched many emotions flit behind his eyes.

Thank you, I am nobody.
If it is meant to be, there would still be hope for having children. Read the story of Abraham and Sara in the Bible.

Finally he asked her if there was something to stop the birth control, her saying that she she had never heard of anything, nor anyone that went on and had children. She watched his face, trying to read his thoughts as he was thinking. He told her that he would think on it. That night she saw him deep in his bible and praying. She fell asleep before him and woke up to see him already up and making breakfast. He held her chair out, seated her and set the meal on the table. They ate, him making small talk and when finished he told her he wanted to talk. With a sigh and with her head bowed, she prepared to face his rejection. She almost fell off her chair when he said he prayed about it and would let having children in His Hands. That if it was in His will, He would bless them with children. He reiterated that it would be a covenant marriage between them and God, that God does not take vow breaking lightly. Does she still want to be his wife? His answer came in the form of her launching herself into his arms and them spending time in bed. They were both weak in the knees when they got out of bed.
With the warmer weather here, they were busy in the garden plots and other chores. Rahab was loving it, working with her man. In her mind, no other man had ever treated her as nice as Dillon was. She felt safe, protected and loved. She wished she had met him years ago instead of Chad. Dillon continued to listen to the radio once a week. One morning he picked up a faint signal announcing a trading meet up, giving the coordinates which was miles away from him. It was at least 50 miles and the people would be there for 7 days. Rahab had been listening with him and she was all excited, wanting to go right away. He thought a minute, then told her no, it was too risky. A message out of the blue from unknown people. It would be better to wait and see what happens to other people. She wasn't happy but agreed to wait with him.
For the rest of the warm months, they heard the same message every 3 weeks. They faintly heard other people that attended the trade and things seemed okay. Then winter set in and the snows trapped them in. Rahab was irate that they hadn't went before. Dillon said they would go next year if the broadcasts continued. She was in a better mood after that. They acted like newlyweds during the winter but no signs of a baby. Dillon told her that come Spring, they should still enlarge the garden plots in faith that a baby would come. She eagerly agreed.
Once the snows melted, they got the garden plots growing. Again they heard the broadcast about the trade meet up. Dillon told her they would spend the time getting ready for the next broadcast in 3 weeks, to gather up what they wanted to take for trade. He figured to take some of his tanned hides along to trade. The broadcast started and they hit the trail, Dillon told her it would take about 2 days of travel to reach it. He had his Mauser 98 with an additional 8 boxes of ammo. She elected to have only her walking / defensive stave. They had their backpacks and 7 tanned deer hides and several smaller rabbit hides plus 1 wolf hide.
They neared the place towards evening but he made them have a cold camp a distance away and then approach it in the light of morning. After a restless night of dozing in and out of sleep, the sun was peeking over the hilltop. They moved forward and observed the trade meet for 2 hours, watching it come alive and then people coming and going. It seemed legitimate. They rose to their feet and walked into the trade meet. They saw many different factory produced items on display. They walked around, getting a feel for what all was for trade and how it worked.
Dillon was talking with a vendor of some things he wanted, showing the vendor a deer hide as payment. Rahab stood near him, looking around. Then she saw a young man about her age with a woman at his side, looking at her and he mouthed “WOW!” He was very muscular, long blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail and blue eyes. And she felt the tingles and butterflies in her stomach. The man smiled. Then the man and woman came near. He introduced himself to Rahab as Tyrone and said the woman was his sister. She was so enthralled with the looks of this young, hot man giving her the tingles, that she didn't notice her husband Dillon watching her.
Then Dillon saw Tyrone pull her in and kiss her. Dillon stepped forward to set Tyrone straight but stopped when he plainly seen Rahab enthusiastically kissing him back. Then he heard Tyrone ask her if she was single, who was the old man with her. Rahab said he was nobody, just an old man she walked in to the trade meet with. Rahab didn't see Dillon turn and walk away, leaving the trade meet and not looking back at her. She spent the next few days with Tyrone, basking in his comments of her being so beautiful, and sharing his bed at night. He showered her with gifts and treated her like a queen. On the last day of the trade meet, she was standing naked in front of Tyrone when he asked her who Chad was since his name was tattooed on her backside.
In panic she grabbed a hand held mirror, looking at it and saw her Chad tattoo was back in bold letters. Later as Rahab was leaving with Tyrone and his sister, he asked her again who Chad was. She broke down and told him that Chad used to be her pimp and she lived many years being a prostitute. Tyrone chuckled and said that she would fit right in since she was already used to being a prostitute. That his “sister” was a prostitute that he pimped out and now Rahab would be his too. She howled in misery until Tyrone slapped her face. She was clutching her face where it was slapped, thinking about how she had messed up throwing Dillon away because she had the tingles for some hot looking young man. She didn't remember seeing Dillon since the first few hours of being at the trade meet.

Dillon made his way back home, berating himself for being such a fool AGAIN! First Jezebel and then Rahab, both tossing him aside like a used snotty tissue for a bad boy. To see Rahab enthusiastically kissing the man, then hearing her tell him that Dillon was a nobody to her. If the man had been forcing himself on Rahab, Dillon would of fought, but she was willingly with the other man. She had broken her vow to God and to him, there is no reason to fight for her, the marriage was broken by her adultery. Being by himself with the pain of her betrayal, he pushed on throughout the night and was home by sunup the next day. He grabbed something to eat and brought it outside to sit and eat, his rifle across his lap. If anyone had seen him, they would of said they saw steam coming out his ears from his anger. After several hours, he finally realized that the answer was not in his anger. He went and got his bible, set aside his rifle near him and started reading. Soon God's word was comforting him and he felt his anger slipping away. But he did know he had to keep watch because since she had betrayed him already, she most likely would betray where he lived and what he had. So he would have to start sleeping outside until the winter snows started or until this situation was resolved. All he knew was that he would never ever take her back nor trust her again.
As for Rahab, Tyrone was not part of the trade meet, but followed them around, prostituting her and the other woman. He moved with the trade meet to the next spot and Rahab found herself in popular demand because of her beauty, body and her newness to Tyrone's lineup. And it was no longer rich authorities paying for her services, it was the common man who paid by the hour and she often had 3 or 4 clients a day. The more time back in prostitution, the more in her mind it was not her fault for her situation, it was Dillon's fault. She would not of been able to rationally explain to someone why it was Dillon's fault but no way was she going to take accountability for her actions. It was time for the trade meet to be back at the original spot where she had met Tyrone. When there, she would tell Tyrone where Dillon's place was and everything he had. Maybe it would gain her favor with Tyrone and also be payback to Dillon for treating her so badly.
Dillon continued working, doing the chores while keeping a watchful eye out. Nights he was sleeping out, changing spots every night over the weeks. So far everything had been quiet. He had heard the pack of wolves regularly, it sounded like 8-10 of them. But they gave him a wide berth after he had shot 1 of them. On the 3rd week he was up at daybreak and took care of his morning fertilization of a spot behind a bush. When done, he was standing behind a tree on the hilltop, munching on a carrot that he harvested from his garden yesterday. He was thanking God for this day when off in the distance on the trail way to his home, he noticed movement. It looked to be 3 people. He started stealthily moving to intercept them.
Rahab was filled with excitement when the trade meet was back near Dillon's place. Now she would pay him back for his evil treatment of her. She told Tyrone that she knew of a place near here that had enough resources to make them all rich and they wouldn't have to prostitute again. She would lead him to it and take it from an old man, he wouldn't know what hit him and would be an easy target. So Tyrone skipped the trade meet and the 3 of them started the trek to Dillon's place and its riches.
Tyrone was warning her that it had better be worth his time as they approached Dillon's location. Rahab was assuring him it was and they were near it, she wanted payback against the old man that was the cause of her troubles. Dillon was flanking them along the trail and he was close enough to hear their words. In his mind he found it hard to fathom how he was the bad guy and the cause of her problems. Oh well, it was time to end this. He stepped out from behind a tree and said “freeze.”
The 3 of them stopped in surprise at the sight of him. Rahab said that was him as Tyrone looked at the older man facing him. Tyrone laughed and told Dillon to drop his rifle, he may let Dillon live as a servant. Dillon smiled and said “no.” Tyrone made a move, trying to draw the handgun he had in his belt. Dillon had already had the rifle safety off before he confronted them. Quickly he shouldered his rifle, sighting on Tyrone's chest. The 8mm 175gr bullet entered his chest, exploding the heart and splattering warm gooey blood all over Rahab and the other woman. Both of the women screaming from the noise, violence and the blood on them. With a surprised look on his face, Tyrone fell to the ground dead before he even had the handgun out of his belt.
Dillon stepped up, plucking the handgun off Tyrone, searching him for other weapons. Then he stepped close to Rahab and the other woman, quickly searching them for any weapon. Finding none, he stepped back and told them to shut up. Rahab was furious her plan had not worked. She spat at him “what are you going to do now, kill us?” Looking at her, Dillon told her no, that she had broken her vow to God and he would let God handle her. She laughed and said there was no God, she was safe.
Dillon searched Tyrone again, not finding much of anything he wanted, mostly things that the women could use. He did find several gold and silver coins that he kept. He told the 2 women to take what they wanted and leave, go far away. Rahab laughed at Dillon being such a loser as she shouldered Tyrone's backpack, the 2 women left, going back the way they came. The women were so upset by what had happened, that they didn't clean themselves and only made it 2 miles before they were tuckered out from the stress. They made a small camp and were munching on some food when they heard growling. They looked up to see the pack of wolves had encircled them. The wolves had been attracted by the smell of Tyrone's blood on them and the food they were eating. The women screamed as the wolves leaped on them, the screams soon ending as the wolves teeth ripped them apart. Off in the distance Dillon heard the sounds of the wolves and some faint screams reaching his ears. He bowed his head in prayer to God.

Rahab reminds me, in a side wise manner, of my sister in law.
I did not see it at the time, but what she seemed to crave the most was excitement. At the time we just saw that the work that we did to build a good life were "boring". And she complained about one bad-boy sort was "stupid", which he really was, but when we reminded her that one young man she dated was a college student and NOT stupid, her reply was that he was "boring".
She really did want all of the trappings of middle class life, and she was jealous of her relatives prosperity, but she never stayed with something long enough to build up sweat equity. She was an excellent artist and that brought in money for a good bit while her 2 kids were small, but that relationship broke up after quite a few years. She then went on disability for a hereditary problem that is common in her family, and she took off with an alcoholic gent and they traveled while living the best that they could. Her disability really was bothering her by then but not as badly as it did when she got older.
It was a turbulent life, and I suspect not a happy one, but it was not BORING!
It might have been good if she could have enlisted, because when she was younger, like her soldier father, she was strong, brave, and good to have on your side during an emergency. But it was another era and it was not possible to do the military "it's not a job, it's an adventure" method to see the world.
She is an older woman now, and living in a home for the handicapped as she is not very well.
To sum up a complicated person, she craved entertainment and adventure more than she craved what most people would think of as a successful life. So, while she envied us our house and our car she never stayed in one place to be able to buy one. And if she had she probably would not have kept it, as what good is a house if you decide to travel south for the winter?
Sorry for bending you folks ears like this, but I really am in an introspective mood, I guess. It is just that Rahab and her dropping everything to have more excitement in her life really did remind me of my SIL. And jumping towards excitement without considering the risks really is not safe
Edited to add: and yes, she did blame the bad things in her life on other people, at least until she was middle-aged. Her boyfriend loaned her stolen necklaces, or she did not have a chance to go to college (Not true, and we offered on the spot to help her through college,) etc

A few days later Dillon checked on where he had heard the wolves and screaming. As he expected, he founds the remains of the women, basically chewed on bones and torn clothing. He searched their belongings, finding nothing useful except for some pots that he would keep and take back to put in storage. Sadly he knew that she now knew that there was God and she was in a very unpleasant place now.
He finished up all the outside chores before the snows started. He had preserved all the extra produce that had been planted with Rahab being there and the thought of a child. Now that was gone. He had tried to treat Jezebel and Rahab as best as he knew how but that hadn't worked for him. He was beginning to think that the old saying of women only looking at nice guys as an ATM for them was true.
The snows came just like in the past years with the snows piling up and the winds howling. His chickens were still laying several eggs every day which helped with protein needs. He always read his bible every day, read his other how-to books from his library. He wasn't going to sit and stew in his pity and misery. He did calisthenics so he kept his body in shape while he was stuck inside. It would be too easy to sit around eating sweets and gaining weight in the form of fat while watching the snow come down.
Warm weather finally came and he planted his garden plots. He constantly had his rifle with him, always watchful. The thought had entered his mind that Rahab's group had told other people about him but he finally dismissed that idea. Tyrone and Rahab would of wanted it all for themselves. The trade meet was back, broadcasting their times. He wasn't sure if he wanted to go there again. Sure, it wasn't their fault for Rahab and Tyrone but it still left a bad taste in his mouth. Maybe later in the season.
The summer was uneventful. His crops were doing great. The wolf pack was in the area, he had already shot 2 of them and had their hides tanning. He always tanned them with the hair on. The wolf hide he did trade during last year's trade meet brought a good deal for him. Maybe he would go to the last trade meet of the season to see what was available he could use.
It was announced that it was the last trade meet of the season. Dillon rolled his tanned hides into a bundle and set off so that he would arrive on the last day. As planned he was there for the last day. There wasn't a lot of things that he was personally interested in. He traded a couple of small rabbit hides and a deer hide. He caught up on any news but it was the same, the government was corrupt and didn't care about its people.
He spent the night near the trade meet, that way he could start in the morning and be able to watch his back trail to make sure no one was trying to follow him. As usual he woke up at daybreak, fertilized the bushes and had a quick breakfast. He had heard the trade meet breaking camp to leave. He had heard a big crash and a lot of cussing. After the trade meet left, another sound came to his ears, one of sobbing and crying. Carefully moving closer to see what it was. He made himself a promise that if it was a woman, he wasn't getting involved.
He could hear 2 voices through the brush “what are we going to do? It hurts so bad and I'm cold.” Closer he went and through the brush he could now see a young boy and girl. The boy was laying on the ground clutching his leg and the girl was kneeling near him holding her arm. They were both naked except for underwear. “How are we going to live with these broken limbs? It hurts. Are there any scraps of food they left? Could you bring me some water from the creek?” Observing, Dillon saw the girl get to her feet and search the camp for something to carry water in. She found a dented cup and fetched some water. She also found a small pile of discarded food from someone's meal they had thrown in the fire. Dillon had been watching to see if there was anyone else around, fearing a trap. There was no one. The 2 children were clutching each other, crying in pain and their misery. He stepped out of the brush, the children saw him and their eyes grew wide in fear.
He told them he was not going to hurt them. He knelt down next to them and asked them their names and what happened as he gingerly inspected them. The boy was Tom age 10 and the girl was Mary age 8. The man who owned them had them helping load his wares at the end of the trade meet when a heavy item fell sideways. Tom had tried shoving Mary out of the way while he rolled the other way. But the item fell striking her arm and hitting his leg. Their owner had said they weren't worth the time and cost of healing them, so he had stripped their clothes and shoes off them and then left them. Dillon knew that it would have been a death sentence for the 2 children.
They were shivering in the 50F temperature and he heard their stomachs rumbling with hunger. He broke out the 2 wolf hides he had and wrapped them around the children's shoulders to help warm them. He handed each a piece of jerky as he told them they each had a broken bone, that he was no doctor but he would do his best to set the bones. It would hurt while he did it but it would be better for them in the long run. Would they trust him to do it. They looked at each other, feeling the pain from their broken bones, then nodded their heads yes.
Dillon tried to remember everything he had read about setting bones. From his inspection it looked to be simple breaks. He would start with Mary's arm. He asked Tom to hold her hand for comfort while he did it. She quickly grabbed Tom's hand. Dillon did what he remembered and Mary did scream, then it was over and she was just sobbing. Dillon used 2 sticks that he had gathered and splinted her lower arm and rigged a sling for her arm. Then it was time for Tom. Mary held his hand and said that she would be there for him as his bone was set. Again there was a scream and then sobbing. Dillon splinted his lower leg with 2 bigger branches. He cut 2 forked branches to use as crutches. It definitely wouldn't get him a recommendation to be a doctor in a hospital but he hoped it would be enough.
He knew they wouldn't be fit to travel this day so he started a fire to cook some food and keep them warm. Their eyes got wide when they were told that they could help themselves to the food. They were used to basically eating leftovers. Dillon said they would sleep here for the night and then start to his home in the morning. Tom and Mary asked him if that meant he now owned them, that he had fixed their bones, fed them and kept them warm. He told them he did not own them, he was asking if they wanted to come live with him. They looked at each other in wide eyed wonder. He told them to think about it overnight and give him their answer in the morning. He spent the rest of the day trying to make the wolf hides fit around them better and makes some moccasins for their feet to walk.
It was a fitful night of sleep for the children as they tried to find positions that didn't jostle their injuries. They even sleep snuggled up together for comfort. In the morning they woke up to the smell of breakfast Dillon had cooked. They ate and then told Dillon they would go with him. He told them them it would require days to reach and they would take it slow so they could keep up. He would have to carry Tom most of the way He didn't want to make a travois to make drag marks that someone could follow. They set out and moved slowly, it took 6 days to reach his home. When they were close, he hid them in the brush while he went the rest of the way to make sure things were okay at his place. The children were fearful, thinking maybe he would abandon them. But shortly he was back saying it was okay. He led them home and when they were inside they were amazed.
