Chapter 54
Paul was thinking of things to purchase that would be beneficial for the farm in the long term. He made a list and at the top was pine tar and linseed oil for wood treatment. In the list were nails of various sizes, bolts and nuts and screws, especially deck screws. He either locally purchased those or ordered them.
Things in the country were relatively peaceful except for the larger cities. There was still rioting and demonstrations. Other people were too busy trying to make a living and feeding their families. The main cause is the government had implemented a program that social handouts would require some type of work according to your abilities. Of course, this caused riots because people were used to getting something for nothing. In reality, the government could no longer afford to hand out money willy-nilly to grifters, getting no return. Everyone was going to have to pull together. For generations who had lived off the government, this was a non-starter. So, for those who refused to lift a finger to feed their families, they became a thorn in the sides of those who had trained them to be reliant on the government. People around relatively rural towns were more willing to work and plenty of jobs and food were found for them. This began a reverse exodus from the big cities to more rural localities and they soon learned they wouldn’t get food and money for free. Those new refugees who decided to obtain their sustenance by nefarious means soon didn’t need to….ever again. Several times the local militia had to be formed to subdue a situation If the perp survived the confrontation, trials were quickly conducted with legal representatives provided. Food theft was rumored to be a capital offense and the word was put out that hanging was the preferred method of punishment. After the word got out, no one migrated to Johnson County not willing to work for what they received. If you were caught stealing even a cup of boiled peanuts from a service station, you could find yourself stretching a rope, or that was the rumor.
Johnson County’s security and judicial procedures soon gained foothold across the state and migrants began shying from the state of Missouri, looking for easier places to live while there were any left. Unlike some cities and towns in the country, the police departments and Sheriff’s department were happy to see residents openly carrying guns. Many times, citizens had lent a hand to help LEOs in tight situations. It wasn’t uncommon to see men and women show up, armed to the teeth, at stores along highway 64 if a convenience store clerk felt uneasy about a group of customers. All it took was one call.
This went on for a long time until long guns were seen as often and were put back into safes and racks, but people still went armed.
The open borders were closed and the government was using military snipers to stop smuggling coyotes, Controversy arose when Mexican military were caught helping the cartels and were killed. Corruption was rampant in the Mexican government but they shut up when the President told them those who were corrupt would pay the piper along with the rest.
THE END
