I see evidence of what looks like "auto spellcheck" - things such as "time" in place of "tie". That one is very hard to fat-finger as "t", "i" and "e" are all in the same row and two rows away from the "m". Yeah, I know. I'm old fashioned and still use an ancient device with a big screen and a full keyboard and it only checks the spelling/grammar when I tell it to - but it doesn't substitute words ;-) Thanks, Papa.... my brain goes infinitely faster than my fingers....

Chapter 28
Together Jimmy and Wes emptied the storage locker and filled the Tundra. They drove around the front and quickly connected the travel trailer.
Wes had never seen one like this. He really was not that familiar with them, but it was black and white with red trim. Had the words Black Series stenciled on it and HQ21. It seemed to have a very sturdy build to it and it rode high off the ground.
“This one was built for off road use. It is 27 ft and was modestly appointed. Now it is full of MRE’s, Mountain house, water and ammo.” Jimmy Smiled.
“Then it is full of Love!”
“That’s right.”
They waited until dusk and left quietly. They went back to the motel and picked up the waitress. Turns out her name was Anne. They were able to leave without any issue. As they approached the turnoff to the campground, Jimmy drove on past.
“That was the turn off.” Wes motioned.
“Yes it was. That place is packed. We would not last too long with what we have.” Jimmy countered.
Wes just kept looking out the windshield. They kept vigil in the dark as they went along. It seemed that the further away they got from the last blacktop, the narrower the gravel road became.
Soon they arrived at a turn off that looked like an unused driveway. “My great uncle owned land on the lake. He died about seven years ago and his good for nothing son of his, my dear cousin, let it go to crap.” Jimmy explained.
They traveled for some time then the road opened up into a small field of sorts. In the middle of the field, from what Wes could see with the head lights, was a small cabin that was not in good repair. Beyond that was the lake with a boat house. The boat house was in decent enough shape. Wes looked at Jimmy with askance on his face.
“I never knew about this lake. It is huge!” Anne let out. Both Wes and Jimmy smiled. They had forgotten she was back there.
“Here she lies.” Jimmy said. Then to Wes, “We keep a boat here. We don’t much care for the house and I was planning on moving out here when things got bad.”
“Well, looks like you timed that right. How’d you know I was around here?” Wes said.
“I didn’t. I was planning to pick up some more things…. Wait, what do we have here?” Jimmy slowed and stopped the truck. Hidden somewhat behind the cabin was a tent, and what looked like a camp set up. “Looks like you have some squatters. Probably overflow from the campground.” Wes surmised.
“Looks that way.” Jimmy quickly glanced at his watch. It was around a quarter after one in the AM. He pulled up behind the house near the tent then backed the travel trailer up to the boat house.
Soon he stopped where he wanted and left the headlights directly on the tent. Soon a head poked out. This was followed by a body shod only in cutoff jeans shorts. This man was lanky and dirty. He was soon followed by two more people. Another skinny man and a woman who had a thin blanket wrapped around her.
The first man literally stomped toward the truck, arriving at the driver’s side door as Jimmy pulled the handle and stepped out. There was about a foot difference between the two men, but that did not phase Jimmy none.
“Hey, what is the meaning of this??? We are trying to sleep here!”
Jimmy cut with all pleasantries. “This is my land, you three are trespassing. I will be generous and give you 10 minutes to pack up and move on.
“No one person can own all this land. Besides, it was empty. We are allowed to camp on empty land.”
“Yeah, no. That isn’t going to wash partner. You need to go. Now.”
The man took a step forwards and said, “Yeah, Make us! You have no proof this is your land.”
Wes got out of the truck and laid his M-1 across the hood. “Yeah? This man is the owner and as you can see, he doesn’t want you here.”
The carbine did not phase this guy. “What you got in the trailer?”
“Last chance!” Wes growled.
“Now mister, calm down. This is my land and I will handle it.” Jimmy piped up.
“You got food and supplies. You are bound by law to share it.” The man said,
“Yeah, Fool, what you fail to see is you have a land owner who is ready to rip your throat out and settle this now.” Wes said.
“We are going to call the police!” The man said.
“There it is… We have a Karen!” Wes taunted.
He couldn’t help it, Jimmy snorted.
Wes picked up his carbine, made a big show of chambering a round and said, “Son, this here is the law now. There is no more police and won’t be for a while now. So you are going to have to figure out if your entitlement is good for your health or not.”
The other man decided that it was a good time to join the conversation. “Where are you going? What do you have anything for us?”
“Where is none of your worry and no, this is for my family. I am sure you realize how important is it to provide for your family.”
“Hey, man! We are all in this together, share and share alike, right?” The second man said.
“No, not right. You have no right to our hard work, working while you were forsaking. Your rights end where mine begin.” Jimmy said.
“Look, we will trade you for something.” The second man said.
“Like what? What can that tent hold?” Jimmy sneered.
“Not the tent. Take her. She is only slightly used. She would bring you many nights of pleasure before she is done.” The second man said.
Before any of the men could react, the second man instantly grew a third eye. In the blink of that eye, Wes had drawn his Glock and pulled the trigger just once. It was silenced so all anyone heard as a passing of air, like someone snapping their fingers and the cycling of the chamber as another. There was a small pause as the man registered surprise then blankness and fell to the ground.
“I am going to cut you up, fool!” The first man, pulled a large knife and took two steps too many. Two holes appeared in his chest, yet there was little sound. Just a couple of ffpt, ffpts. Like puffs of air. Anne looked down at the M4 she had in her hand and smiled. She didn’t know it was suppressed.
The woman started to scream, but Anne, who had gotten out of the truck to take the shot handed the M-4 to Wes and went to the woman. She soon quieted.
“What do we do now?” Jimmy asked.
“Let’s load your boat. We can get Sam and she can help Anne with this woman.”
They did that, getting all the provisions over in three small trips. If the campground denizens weren’t any wiser, there was no tale tell signs. Sam did come over and it was agreed that Sam and Anne would take the truck and run her back to her house about three miles down the road. Wes and Jimmy disposed of the bodies.
The woman had been out tending to the garden to the side of her property. She had lived out there for most of her 40 or so years. She was no match for the two men when they came and snatched here. Her Husband, and two younger children, being parents late, were none the wiser. They took her the night before last and had found this secluded place to do their business. Sam agreed to drop her off close to her home, not wanting to give away more about themselves than what they wished.
When they got back, introductions were made and they were ferried over, Wes took the boat and locked it back into the boat house and went to his kayak. It hadn’t been disturbed, but would not have lasted there much longer. The camp inhabitants had grown.
When he finished paddling back to the entry point to the island, he saw that most of the supplies had been schlepped up the steep hill already, the four stood looking across at the campground. Wes finally spoke up. “That is a mess over there. Before long that will be trouble.
“We can’t murder them.” Jimmy said.
“Why not, it doesn’t matter.” Anne countered.
“We need to make sure they do not mess with the trailer or truck. Or have them swim over and sneak up on us.” Sam said.

Chapter 29
“Her name was Amy.” Anne said out of the blue.
It was early the next morning. Wes and Jimmy had taken the two kayaks over to Jimmy’s family place and hid the RV as best as they could. Upon return, they found Anne sitting on some rocks just above the waterline.
“Who?” Jimmy asked.
Without looking at him, she continued, “The lady we helped this morning. Her name was Amy.”
They were all quiet for a bit. The Anne continued. “She was used.” She paused. “Like me.” There was no emotion. Just a vacancy in her stare and voice.
“Yes. That is true. We all got used one way or another. Your way was really personal. But that does not define you. It does not tell everyone who you are. You get to do that. It sure as “&^% doesn’t impact your value!” Sam said with firmness, as she had come down to meet them.
Wes took it up. “Look around you. You are key to what we are trying to do here. That is your value.”
“Yeah, right. I am valuable.” Anne sarcastically stated. “Who needs a used up old rag? Exactly what value do I have to you professionals?”
“Seemed you had some value earlier this morning. You covered our butts quite well.” Wes said.
That seemed to register, a little. “That was then. What can I contribute? I am used, I have no skills. I don’t even know what this is we are trying to do!”
“The government took me and squeezed me like a turnip for over thirty years and left me old and half lame. We all get used by people, business, corporations, governments and society as a whole. So you need to get over that part of it!” Wes was getting a little upset. Realizing this he took a deep breath and said, “Look, I do know what it is like to get kidnapped, held against my will and tortured, but I do not know what it is to get raped and to go through what you went through. But I will promise you this. You are very valuable to us. You have eyes and ears to help keep watch, you seem to be proficient with a weapon to help protect us. You restaurant skills will help us with keeping us organized and keeping track of things. Your memory skills and attention to details from that job will help keep us from missing anything. And your work ethic will come in handy when it comes time to build in more sustainment, like gardening and taking care of livestock. We have some huge shoes that need to be filled and we are looking for you to fill them. That is your value! Society is cracking and it will totally break down. We need to survive the next few months as this happens and hopefully we can come out the other end and build back better.”
Wes took a moment to look into her eyes. With a compassionate smile, “Look, I am not asking you to forgive and absolutely not forget. But I will tell you that I will have to be dead for it to ever happen again. Jimmy and Sam too. Sam and I are very good at what we do and if I am judging Jimmy right, he can handle himself too.”
“Deep in my heart, I have heard you. I’ve watched you for all this time when you would come to the café. Wes, you have honor. Just give me time. I will try my best, but for females, we can’t just flip a switch. This goes way beyond his forcing his way with me. It is way more than the act. It was a blatant violation to my very core.”
“Okay. That is all any of us can do, is our best.” With that he turned and walked up the hill to the rock enclave. He took his hammock and went back out to some trees and strung it up. Climbing in, he was soon fast asleep.
Later that afternoon, Anne came to where he was sleeping and gently woke him up. “We all took turns this morning and now afternoon keeping an eye on things. We all took turns and now you are up.”
“Thank you for letting me sleep this long. I needed that. What’s the sitrep?” He asked.
“Sam took first watch and directed us to come up with sleeping solutions for the four of us. I prefer something out in the open like you have here. We can figure it out when it rains and we all need to be sheltered.” “Okay, that sounds good. Depending on the rain, if it is a storm or something, we can string up a tarp. I have some extra hammocks stored away. What is the watch situation?” He asked.
“We are mainly focusing on the camp across the way, but also making sure our blind sides get some attention.” She replied.
“That sounds like a good plan.” He rolled out of the hammock, and put on his flop hat on after running his fingers through his hair. Anne hadn’t moved and he looked at her and smile. “It all yours.”
She smiled her thanks and settled in.
For the rest of the week, they settled into a routine. The watches weren’t that stringent and they worked hard to make their footprint and survival profile minimal. If the people at the camp knew they were there, they never let on.
As the days have worn on, they witnessed acts of aggression increasing, and guessed it was over resources like food, water and such. Every once in a while they would see a physical scuffle, but they were short lived.
It was almost two weeks later when Sam came into the rock enclave and said, “Looks like something is up over there. The camp is emptying.” She reported.
They all went out and went to the top of hill and looked out from the trees. They noticed the folks leaving the water in a big group.
“Well, that is odd. I don’t see anyone forcing them to leave and all their stuff is still there.” Jimmy pointed out.
“Maybe they are scavenging or something.” Anne added.
“I has to be close, because why would they risk all their stuff without anyone watching it.” Sam said.
Wes was quiet. He had a high powered monocle. He abruptly uttered an emphatic, “(S)ugar (H)oney (I)ced (T)ea!)” This lingered among the group for a moment before he added. “Jimmy, they found the RV and the Boat.”
“Good Gosh!” Jimmy said. “They won’t do them no good! We took everything.”
“Yeah, they don’t know that. They will tear up everything… Wait a moment.” Wes Paused. He handed the glass to Anne.
Confused, she took the monocle and looked at Wes.
“Look at the Boat house. Green Pants, Peach T-Shirt.” He said.
She looked where he was directing. It took a moment to find the person then she gasped, “That (Female hound)!!” She kept looking. Then eventually brought the eye piece down and looked at the group. “It’s Amy. She is showing them everything.”
Sam was not happy. “She knows about all the supplies we have and that we used a boat to transport it. They will know about the island.”
“How many of them are they?” Jimmy asked.
“There are about 40 or so people at the camp ground now.” Sam guessed.
“Well that will not do. Can we hold off that many if come this way?” Anne asked.
“We’d do okay.” Wes said. “I’ve had time to lay in a few surprises’”
Jimmy smiled, “And to get here they will have to swim.”
“Hold on.” Wes said as he caught movement back at the campground. He pulled up the monocle and peered through it. “Looks like we have our first swimmer.”
He watched as the person who demonstrated they were definitely a she, when she removed her clothes, tied them in a bundle, tied the bundle to herself then entered the water and struck out toward the middle. The campground was around the bend and quite a ways down from Jimmy’s family place, so the crowd had no clue of the swimmer.
As it were, the island was quite a ways from the shore and at it closest point, was at least a mile out. This wasn’t the closest. Still the woman with strong, sure strokes only encumbered by her clothes dragging behind her made good time.
In short order, she made it to the island and swam the circumference before finding the one place she could make landfall. By then group had moved down closer to the water’s edge, but still were concealed. She got out, only wearing underwear bottoms and dropped her clothes bundle. They would have to be dried. She took her hair and did a job wringing it out.
She stood back up and cracked her neck and said to the trees around her, “Okay, Wes. Peep Show is over.”
“Hello, Veronica. Looks like you found us.”

Chapter 30
Wes came out from a large Pine tree and just stood there looking at her. He managed to keep the surprise off of his face, but then figured she was like the proverbial bad penny that always turned up.
“Well?” She asked.
“Well what?” Wes said. He was really tired of playing games with this one. “What do you expect me to say? Welcome? Put your damn clothes on? What?”
Veronica looked at him. Then she asked, “Is it just you? I figured you were dying to know how I found you.”
“Yes, it is just me. And if my choice is between you and keeping it that way, I will take the later.” He said. “And for the record, again, I am an old man, there ain’t nothing you have that I A. Haven’t seen or B. Have a remote interest in based on previous experience.”
Veronica actually stood there with the shocked Pikachu face, like a fish gasping for air.
“There’s that Karen! I knew she was still in there.” Wes smiled.
About this time Sam came out from her spot and walked up next to Wes. She kept her Glock 19 hidden behind her leg until she reached Wes. She made it a point to keep her right shoulder behind Wes’ left shoulder. Behind Wes’ back, she pulled her arm up and rested it and her Glock rested sideways against his back at the ready. Wes smiled.
“Hon, you have great assets, but you may as well put them away. He’s already taken.” Sam addressed her.
“Yeah, I figured as much. The world ends, the music stops and I find all the chairs taken.” Veronica smiles. “No never mind. I was just trying to dry everything out before I redress.”
“Well I can help with that. I have something you can use for now. Let’s go.”
“Wait, how did you know we were here?” Wes asked. Already knowing.
“Well, Big Boy, I don’t have your spidey sense, so I have to revert to the good ole tracker. After I saw where it was, it made sense. I sat over across the road to the campground for a day or so trying to get some intel.”
Wes looked at Sam. “And?”
“It is a sad bunch. They have taking to plundering houses nearby as most are summer homes and are empty because nobody is traveling now. As you'd expect, they aren't getting much. Still it is haphazard and there is no leadership. That is until this morning.” She paused.
Sam stepped in, “Let’s go ahead and get you some clothes on.”
“Wait, first. This morning this lady shows up. She looks mad. It takes her literally an hour to get them organized and worked up that there was someone close by that had supplies and it was their right to get a share. It was like ‘it’s not fair they have it and we don’t.’ And after working them up, the campground emptied. That is when I decided it was the best time to swim for it. Everyone would have been distracted.”
“Okay let’s head up.” Wes turned and went up the hill with Veronica and Sam following. Jimmy and Anne stayed hidden. Anne was fuming!
After they were out of sight, Jimmy and Anne broke cover. “We helped that lady! Why is she like this? She was so sweet!” Anne hissed. She was pissed!
“She got hungry.” Jimmy shrugged. “Once they figure out where we went, they will try to come here. It is not going to end well. We just need to make sure the happy ending is ours.”
She smiled. Then she walked closer to Jimmy and leaned in and kissed him softly, then stepped back.
Jimmy was shocked. “Wha?” He started.
She smiled bigger.
He followed with, “Why?”
“I heard the music stop.” She smiled even bigger at his look of perplexing inquiry.
He shook his head then said. “I am not complaining by any means. However, we still have some open threats going on. Stay here and keep an eye on the campers. I hate to think what they are doing to my stuff over there. I can’t bear to watch, I will follow our trio up the hill here and stay hidden.
“Can I give you another for the road?” She asked this time.
“You never have to ask. You had me the first moment I saw you.”
“You don’t care what that deputy did to me?” She asked.
“Not one bit. I am glad he got what he got. I will make sure it never happens again.” He said.
With that, she leaned in again and he reciprocated. It was deep and totally engaging to the point that Wes had to clear his throat a couple more times to get their attention. They finally looked up.
“Glad that is settled. Come on up and meet Veronica. She is odd, but she has skills we will soon need.” Wes said.
“I am going to stay here for now and watch the campers. Jimmy was on his way anyway.” Anne said.
Wes smiled, Anne had changed in the last hour. And it was for the better.
Jimmy started up the hill and Wes clapped him on the back. As they made their way, Wes smiled, “What brought that on?”
“To be honest, I am not sure. I was definitely interested, but was afraid her attack would make her not interested in men for a while.” Jimmy explained. “But I am patient, I could wait.”
“Yeah, that was possible. But maybe it was also possible that she just needed the right one to come along.” Wes smiled again.
They reached the small clearing just outside the rock shelter. Looking up the tall lodge pines lined the clearing and reminded Wes of camping in a grove of redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, and looking up through a long tunnel of tall trees to a star filled sky that was unpolluted by extraneous light. With a sigh, he figured that here too, there would not be any light pollution for a while.
Wes made the introductions and told Veronica they would re-introduce her to Anne. Veronica had eaten at the diner many times. They spent the afternoon briefing Veronica in on the logistics of their set up, their defenses and ironed out a watch schedule for five pairs of eyes.
By early evening, the campers had moved on from Jimmy’s family place, but they hadn’t gone back to the campground. Wes was happy about this but at the same time found it worrisome.
“Should we go take a look?” Jimmy asked.
“We will, but there isn’t any hurry. Just in case someone stumbled on a bright idea to leave us some surprises. I’d rather avoid that.” Wes surmised.

Chapter 31
About one week later, everyone had settled into a routine. Veronica had told about her last few weeks as Civility broke down, filling in on some of the blanks.
Oddly enough, the men who were sent after Wes, that she also had a run in with simply vanished. She definitely kept her head on a swivel hoping for a chance to set that guy straight. But she didn’t get that chance.
She noted that while the effects of the collapse were slower in this town, the impact was greater. People here had more in long term storage, but in her opinion, they were too nice. By the time they realized that they couldn’t be nice any more, they’d lose everything. Even for her, as tough as she was, it was tough to see the elderly and widowed shown zero mercy.
By the end of the first month, all the backups had failed and electricity was gone for good. This meant the food stopped rolling, goods and services ceased, Medical equipment no longer worked, most medications could no longer be made or maintained and people really got hungry.
There was a large die off at this time. The old and infirm, people reliant on medical technology to stay alive all quickly passed. Those that were not in shape and suddenly found themselves having to exert themselves usually wilted to a protesting body.
And the meek, they did not inherit the Earth. Those who did not condone violence was plowed under by it. It was fierce and it was harsh, but in the end, if you had no defense because you thought guns were evil or didn’t like them in any way, or if you were too much of a sheep, never thinking for yourself or always relying on someone else or the government, and even the billionaires, money now useless, mythical electronic funds vanished, loopholes closed forever, all perished. It was a survival of the fittest course correction of gross magnitude. Those who prepared completely, were maintaining.
Those who somehow made it thus far were fleeing the cities as they became deathtraps, little isolated kingdoms where the ruthless ruled. In all of this, she knew she had waited too long, but she was trying to lay low from the Oligarch and felt that out in the open was not a good option.
Then one day the apartment building she was hiding out in mysteriously caught fire and she ended up having a shoot her way out. Fortunately, the opposition were ill trained gang members and she quickly made short work of them. She saved the leader for last as she winged him then used her bush crafting knife to provide a slow exit for this man. He didn’t go gracefully and she ended up being hunted by some of the remaining member. It took a while but she got away. But not before taking several of them out first.
Deputy Fife had kept creeping on her after he had made the first pass a while back. She said that for a while, every other day or so, he would magically show up where she was. He would come on strong and then pout when she totally crushed him. He would just get pushier each time. When Anne told her the story about her run in with Fife, Veronica hugged her in a rare show of affection. It was a hug of sorrow for what Anne had gone through, probably as punishment for Veronica’a rebuffs, but it was a huge hug of thanks.
The Campers had returned. But they would leave each day. Finally, after watching their pattern, Wes and Jimmy decided to take the two kayaks and recon the old family homestead. They left the island before dawn and planned to be gone until dusk.
They got to the bank without incident and stashed the kayaks. Jimmy was saddened to see the state of the place. The Travel Trailer was useless, the boat lift was ransacked, with the boat sitting in the water without the plug in. It had sunk as far as the lift would allow. The house was hardly touched, though.
They made their way slowly to the back door and quietly entered using Jimmy’s key. Obviously, someone had taken up residence there. This door opened into the kitchen and there were used dishes in the sink and on the breakfast table in the middle of the room. Whoever it was had figured out that the stove was gas and it was fed by a tank somewhere outside. They could light the burners with just a lighter.
Holding up his hand and signaling, they began to go room by room clearing each. Jimmy took the steps leading up to the second floor off the kitchen while Wes worked the downstairs.
Going down the hall, the first room he came to was a small narrow room lined with shelves and were once filled with canned jars of various fruits and veggies. It was now still half full. Wes smiled. It seems someone with some G2 about them had somehow kept this stash for themselves and out of the looters hands.
As this room was only separated from the hall by a heavy curtain, he pulled it closed. Easing a couple steps down the short hall, he was at the front of the house. There, the two rooms on either side were a sitting room and a dining area, both were empty. However, what struck him was that they were clean and absent any dust.
Turning back, he went to the small room across from the pantry where the door was closed. It opened into a small bedroom, with a small but full bath just off of it. Trying to picture it, he imagined this room was for an in-law or for possibly servant help of some sort, though Jimmy didn’t seem to come from a family that relied on servant help so he guessed it was for a grandparent. This too was empty, but the bed was made and again, there was no indication that it had sat empty for any amount of time.
Jimmy made it to the second floor with minimum noise, though as steps will go, there were a couple that squeaked. There were four bedrooms and two bathrooms on this floor. One bedroom was the master where his parents had slept. It had its own bathroom. The other three bedrooms were each the same and shared the lone other hall bathroom. As Jimmy had already moved out before his parents moved in after his Great Uncle and Aunt had died, he didn’t have an assigned room per se. He usually opted to stay in the bedroom downstairs. He cleared the other rooms directly and briefly considered pulling the door for the attic down, but then thought better of it. He went back down and jointed Wes downstairs.
“Someone is staying here. But they aren’t here now. How did they pull this off with the house being as stocked as it was and all the campers ransacking everything outside.” Wes mused.
Jimmy looked around. Memories coming back. “They still have water and gas pressure. Solar driven. So it is a pretty good set up.”
“Pantry still has canned food in there too. But this house isn’t defensible. Sooner or later, someone will figure it out. What do you want to do? Head back with some of those mason jars or go checkout the campground while they are out.” Wes asked.
“Let’s make hay. This will be here for a few hours. I would love to see who has taken up residence.” Jimmy replied.
After checking all around the house that it was clear outside, they eased out the door they had entered and quickly went to the brush line and melted into the coverage, heading to the camp. They had no idea that they had been watched. From the moment they stepped foot on land. They also didn’t know that their Kayaks were already gone.

Hello all. Just letting you know that it may be a bit for Wes and crew. I went to a work conference last week and manage to catch Covid for all my troubles. I am a bit better but it knocked me for a bit of a loop. I hope to be back on the wagon again, but though I have a lot of free time now, I have zero energy to scheme up new cliff hangers for you guys. Ooops, it is the meds talking. I'd never do anything on purpose like that!
